- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost, October 4 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of this Sunday, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. This Sunday called on account of its gospel Sunday of the marriage guests reminds us that all men are called to heavenly bliss. The Jews have refused to take part in the feast.
- 0:45Therefore, the apostles and the church filled with the Holy Ghost at Pentecost have turned towards the Gentiles. But the beatific union is announced, prepared, and in a certain manner begun by sacramental communion. To take part in a marriage feast among the Jews, it was necessary to wear a ceremonial garment called a wedding garment. Similarly, to receive the body of Jesus at the holy table and to be in communion with his divinity in heaven one must wear the nuptial robe of baptism and of the state of grace. Therefore the Apostle exhorts us to put on the new man.
- 1:37Commemorated today is Saint Francis of Assisi. Born at Assisi in Umbria, Saint Francis was raised up by God to work at the same time as Saint Dominic for the moral regeneration of the world at a most troubleless period. Francis, says Dante, was a true Seraph by the love which devoured his soul. Dominic, by his enlightened knowledge ranks with the cherubim. The former lived between 1182 and 12/26.
- 2:16The latter between 1170 and 12/21. It is related that Louis, King of France used to say that if he could divide himself he would give half of himself to Saint Dominic and the other half to Saint Francis. Having been baptized John, he received the name of Francis from his father who found the newly born babe on his return from a successful business journey to France. The more the sublime enthusiast says Montelembert hid himself and appreciated himself to make himself worthy by humility and men's contempt to be the vessel of divine love, the more by a wonderful effect of grace men rushed to follow him. Francis soon had disciples who reduced themselves to the same poverty as himself and shared his ardor for the conversion of the people.
- 3:26My brothers, he would say, let us preach penance rather by example than by preaching. Next he gave them a rule which was approved by Innocent the third in 1210. In the following year he obtained from the Benedictines the little church of Our Lady Of The Angels called Portziuncula which was the cradle of his order. The new religious family with which he had enriched the church multiplied so rapidly that about ten years after its birth there were 5,000 brothers at the general chapter held at Assisi. Wishing them to consider themselves the least among religious, Saint Francis gave them the name of friars minor and he himself remained a deacon all his life.
- 4:27Next to this first order, he founded another, the order of poor Claire's, thus called after Saint Claire, the illustrious virgin of Assisi. Lastly in 12/21 he founded a third called the Order of Penitence on which the Popes and especially Leo the thirteenth who considered it an honor to belong to it lavished the greatest encouragement and richest favors. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit.
- 5:17I am the refuge of my people says the Lord. When they cry out to me in time of trouble, I will listen to them and prove myself their Lord forever. Listen, my people, to this testament of mine. Do not turn a deaf ear to the words I speak. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages.
- 5:54Amen. I am the refuge of my people says the Lord. When they cry out to me in time of trouble I will listen to them and prove myself their Lord forever. The Collect, let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, have pity and shut out all things that war against us so that with bodies and souls unencumbered and minds at peace we may accomplish thy will.
- 6:34A commemoration of Saint Francis of Assisi. O God, who through the merits of blessed Francis did give increase to thy church by enriching her with new offspring. Grant us that following his example, we may despise earthly goods and ever be glad to partake of thy heavenly gifts through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians.
- 7:23Brethren, there must be a renewal in the inner life of your minds. You must be clothed in the new self, which is created in God's image, justified and sanctified through the truth. Away with falsehood then let everyone speak out the truth to his neighbor. Membership of the body binds us to one another. Do not let resentment lead you into sin.
- 7:56The sunset must not find you still angry. Do not give the devil his opportunity. The man who was a thief must be a thief no longer. Let him work instead and earn by his own labor the blessings he will be able to share with those who are in need. The gradual, let my prayer be directed as incense in thy sight, o Lord.
- 8:33The lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice. Alleluia. Alleluia. Praise the Lord and call upon his name. Tell the story of his doings for all the nations to hear.
- 8:51Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus once more spoke to the chief priests and the Pharisees in parables. Here is an image of the kingdom of heaven. There was once a king who held a marriage feast for his son and sent out his servants with a summons to all those whom he had invited to the wedding.
- 9:25But they would not come. Then he sent other servants with a fresh summons bidding them tell those who had been invited, by this I have prepared my feast. The oxen have been killed and the fatlings. All is ready now. Come to the wedding.
- 9:49But still they paid no heed and went off on other errands one to his farm in the country and another to his trading and the rest laid hands upon his servants and insulted and killed them. The king fell into a rage when he heard of it and sent out his troops to put those murderers to death and burn their city. After this, he said to his servants, here is the marriage feast already and those who had been invited have proved unworthy of it. You must go out to the street corners and invite all whom you find there to the wedding. And his servants went out into the streets where they mustered all they could find, rogues and honest men together.
- 10:53And so the wedding had its full tale of guests. But when the king came in to look at the company, he saw a man there who had no wedding garment on. My friend, he said, how didst thou come to be here without a wedding garment? Whereupon he made no reply. And the king said to his servants, bind him hand and foot and cast him out into the darkness where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
- 11:32Many are called, but few are chosen. The offertory, though affliction surrounds my path, thou dost preserve me, O Lord. It is thy power that confronts my enemy's malice, thy right hand that rescues me. The secret, we beg thee, O Lord, that these gifts which we are offering in the sight of thy majesty may help us on the way to salvation. A commemoration of Saint Francis of Assisi.
- 12:17O Lord, sanctify these gifts which we dedicate to thee and by the intercession of blessed Francis cleanse us from every stain of sin through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Preface of the Most Holy Trinity. Just it is and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, who together with thine only begotten son and the Holy Ghost art one God, one Lord, not in the oneness of a single person, but in the trinity of one substance. For what we believe by thy revelation of thy glory, the same do we believe of thy son, the same of the Holy Ghost without difference or separation so that in confessing the true and eternal Godhead distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored.
- 13:45In praise of which the angels and archangels, the cherubim also and Seraphim day by day exalt without end with one voice saying, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
- 14:23The communion. Above all else, it binds us. The charge thou hast given us to keep. How shall my steps be surely guided to keep faith with thy covenant? The post communion.
- 14:44Let us pray. O Lord, may thy healing work gently rid us of our waywardness and make us ever hold fast to thy commandments. A commemoration of Saint Francis of Assisi. Let thy heavenly grace, we beseech thee, oh Lord, enrich thy church, which thou hast willed to make illustrious by the glorious merits and example of blessed Francis, thy confessor through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 15:37In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God. Saint Francis of Assisi, pray for us.
