- 0:00Speaker 1: Brought to you by the reinvented two thousand twelve camera.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's ready. Are you welcome to stuff you should know
- 0:08Speaker 1: from How Stuff Works dot Com? Stuff you should know
- 0:11Speaker 1: is brought to you by Visa. We all have things
- 0:13Speaker 1: we like to think about. Online fraud shouldn't be one
- 0:16Speaker 1: of them, because with every purchase, PISA prevents, detexts, and
- 0:20Speaker 1: resolves online fraud safe Secure Visa. I am welcome to
- 0:26Speaker 1: the podcast. I'm Josh Clark, as staff writer here at
- 0:29Speaker 1: How Stuff Works dot Com. With me is my fellow
- 0:32Speaker 1: staff writer, Charles Bryant. Charles W. Bryan Right, that's right,
- 0:35Speaker 1: we'll welcome Chuck. How you doing. I'm doing great, Josh.
- 0:37Speaker 1: How about you? I'm doing pretty good, Chuck. I'm feeling
- 0:39Speaker 1: a little jacked up. I actually kind of feel like
- 0:42Speaker 1: punching you right in the face. Well, you know what, Josh,
- 0:44Speaker 1: if you did that, I would I would probably just
- 0:46Speaker 1: would take it like a past Like every good pacifist,
- 0:48Speaker 1: I would take it. I see, I'm not. I'm not
- 0:50Speaker 1: necessarily pacifist. I'm more fear pain me too. Yeah. Okay,
- 0:54Speaker 1: So I think that means that neither one of us
- 0:56Speaker 1: should actually join a fight club. No, I've never been.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I've never been hitting the face, and I don't plan
- 1:00Speaker 1: to start now at my advanced stage. It's been many
- 1:03Speaker 1: years since I was hit in the face, and uh,
- 1:04Speaker 1: I think that was the first and only time, and
- 1:06Speaker 1: I quickly became scared of being hit in the face,
- 1:09Speaker 1: which is my fear of pain that you know. It
- 1:11Speaker 1: explains that. So fight clubs not for us off limits,
- 1:14Speaker 1: but they are for some people. Yeah, and actually they
- 1:16Speaker 1: are real. Surely you've seen the movie Fight Club several times. Yeah,
- 1:20Speaker 1: every guy you know that's a real man's man, I think,
- 1:23Speaker 1: has seen Fight Club at least three times, at least
- 1:26Speaker 1: maybe four. Even you read the book. I did. I
- 1:28Speaker 1: read the book. I saw the movie. I uh, you know,
- 1:31Speaker 1: I put on a one act play. The Fight Club
- 1:34Speaker 1: was great. I'll bet, I'll bet it was your own interpretation.
- 1:37Speaker 1: It was so. The author of the book, Chuck Palin
- 1:41Speaker 1: yuck right, I think, uh, he has been accused many
- 1:45Speaker 1: times over, especially after the movie came out, because I
- 1:48Speaker 1: think most people who start fight clubs don't read necessarily.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But he was accused of of starting a trend of
- 1:55Speaker 1: conceiving of these fight clubs, which he says that he
- 1:58Speaker 1: made up, um and on the real thing. Yeah, like
- 2:03Speaker 1: lots of lots of people who like to fight, um
- 2:06Speaker 1: start to their own fight clubs. Yeah, and actually, uh,
- 2:09Speaker 1: there are some out there. I found some when I
- 2:12Speaker 1: wrote the article are their real life fight clubs, um,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and found that a lot of them really mirror some
- 2:19Speaker 1: like the rules in the setup that that you find
- 2:21Speaker 1: in the book. Like, Um, did you read about Bloody Knuckles. Yeah,
- 2:25Speaker 1: Bloody Knuckles in San Francisco is they have their one rule,
- 2:28Speaker 1: which is the famous rule from fight Club. If you
- 2:30Speaker 1: show up, you have to fight. You can't just be
- 2:33Speaker 1: a spectator and you have to say it like that,
- 2:35Speaker 1: yeah exactly or else it's just you know, loses his
- 2:38Speaker 1: meaning and it kind of you kind of wonder like
- 2:40Speaker 1: what exactly would happen if you're like, Okay, you know,
- 2:42Speaker 1: I'm gonna go to Bloody Knuckles fight club. He he
- 2:45Speaker 1: lives in a hotel. I imagine a really run down,
- 2:48Speaker 1: weird hotel, UM, and everybody meets in his room. There's
- 2:51Speaker 1: like a secret knock you have to know somebody, UM,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and they take you down to a sub basement to fight. Right.
- 2:57Speaker 1: What happens if you get to the sub basement You're like,
- 3:00Speaker 1: I don't want to fight, right, I don't. It might
- 3:03Speaker 1: quickly turn into a pulp fiction scene, you know, yeah, yeah,
- 3:08Speaker 1: get they get might Oh yeah, yeah yeah that scene. Yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 1: that's a bad one. And I think I'd rather fight.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I would too. I would too, you know, like just
- 3:15Speaker 1: go ahead and go through with it, because you're either
- 3:17Speaker 1: going to be beaten and maled or you know, just
- 3:20Speaker 1: you know, fight somebody else whatever. Yea, So California seems
- 3:25Speaker 1: to be the place to be for real life fight club. Yeah,
- 3:28Speaker 1: there was another one in Oakland, just on the other
- 3:30Speaker 1: side of the Bay called the sp Rats or or
- 3:33Speaker 1: a gang of motorcycle tuffs or Vespa tuffs, and they
- 3:38Speaker 1: they use it actually as a formative initiation. And you know,
- 3:41Speaker 1: apparently like hundreds of people show up to these fights
- 3:44Speaker 1: so you can be a spectator. Yeah, it's not just
- 3:46Speaker 1: a form of initiation. They they and there are like
- 3:48Speaker 1: hundreds of people. It's like the place to be on
- 3:50Speaker 1: Friday nights if you ride a motorcycle. Right. Um, So,
- 3:54Speaker 1: some gangs, including I think the Rats, use it as
- 3:57Speaker 1: an initiation for prospects. They basically throw him in the
- 4:00Speaker 1: ring and have him beat the tar out of one another,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and I guess whoever's left standing is the new member.
- 4:05Speaker 1: That kind of thing, right, And if you lose, then
- 4:08Speaker 1: I'm not sure what remember what happens either. And actually
- 4:11Speaker 1: there's a really extensive article in UM the I think
- 4:16Speaker 1: San Francisco Guardian, Bay Guardian something like that. It seemed
- 4:19Speaker 1: like an underground kind of newspaper or alternative press at least.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And this guy chronicled UM this night, Friday night at
- 4:27Speaker 1: the S A S B Rat fight club, there were
- 4:30Speaker 1: girls fighting one another. He went up and interviewed one
- 4:33Speaker 1: of them, and she got about halfway through this quick
- 4:36Speaker 1: interview and turned and started vomiting because she was beaten
- 4:39Speaker 1: so badly. Some prospects got jumped in. And that's when
- 4:43Speaker 1: you're earning your money as a journalist. Yeah, yeah, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: this guy, you could tell it was very thrilling, you know.
- 4:48Speaker 1: But I mean, when you're writing about a fight club,
- 4:50Speaker 1: the best way to do it is to go yourself.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I unfortunately didn't have time to do that, right. I
- 4:55Speaker 1: didn't find any in Atlanta. Right, although it would be legal.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I know, you found out that as long as two
- 5:01Speaker 1: dudes or two women or whoever, adults, adults have adults
- 5:05Speaker 1: and they have to be not paid. They can beat
- 5:08Speaker 1: the snot out of each other and there's you know,
- 5:10Speaker 1: no repercusion as long as as long as you're concending, right. Yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 1: And actually I also ran into something that didn't make
- 5:15Speaker 1: it in the article. It's called the pillow fight Club.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Have you heard of this? I've heard of National Pillow
- 5:20Speaker 1: Fight Day. They have every year. They have like flash mobs, um.
- 5:23Speaker 1: But there was one in Tel Aviv, iFund one in Seattle,
- 5:27Speaker 1: um where everybody just shows up at a predetermined time
- 5:30Speaker 1: and starts beating one another pillows. That sounds like a
- 5:33Speaker 1: lot more at my allien, it's much more of a
- 5:34Speaker 1: loving Yeah, as a lover, I think you'd appreciate that.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I think anybody would appreciate are their real life fight clubs.
- 5:40Speaker 1: So you should go read it now or else Me
- 5:42Speaker 1: and Chuckle find you and stay tuned to find out
- 5:45Speaker 1: what the Brady Bunch and Hurricane Katrina vacumies have in common.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Right after this stuff you should know is brought to
- 5:51Speaker 1: you by Visa. We all have things to think about,
- 5:54Speaker 1: like say, what's the best sight to buy a new
- 5:56Speaker 1: leather jacket? But whether to buy the three or six
- 5:59Speaker 1: megapixel camera. But thankfully we don't need to think about
- 6:02Speaker 1: online fraud because for every purchase you make, Visa keeps
- 6:05Speaker 1: an eye out for fraud with real time fraud monitoring
- 6:09Speaker 1: and by making sure you're not liable for any unauthorized purchases.
- 6:12Speaker 1: How's that for peace of mind, safe, secure Visa? So, Chuck,
- 6:20Speaker 1: do you know what Hurricane Katrina evacuees and the Brady
- 6:22Speaker 1: Bunch have in common? You know, Josh, I don't. You've
- 6:25Speaker 1: teased me with this one for weeks and I've been
- 6:27Speaker 1: dying to know. I'm finally going to reveal it to
- 6:29Speaker 1: you what they're both exposed to from alde hyde through
- 6:32Speaker 1: particle board. Do you know anything about this now? But
- 6:36Speaker 1: how does the Brady Bunch figure in? Well, the Brady
- 6:37Speaker 1: Bunch had that faux wood paneling in their in their
- 6:40Speaker 1: living room. Uh, and Hurricane Katrina evacuees were exposed to
- 6:45Speaker 1: it through um female trailers, which the government recently ordered
- 6:49Speaker 1: them out of because of health issues. Right. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:52Speaker 1: that's a bit of a reach, but I'll buy Actually
- 6:54Speaker 1: it's not. I found that the combination. In one of
- 6:57Speaker 1: our colleagues articles, Kristin Conger wrote, Uh, ten everyday dangerous
- 7:01Speaker 1: things in your home, and you can find that on
- 7:03Speaker 1: how stuff works dot com. Learned about formaldehyde and nine
- 7:06Speaker 1: other interesting things you should be very scared of. For
- 7:10Speaker 1: more on this and thousands of other topics, is it
- 7:13Speaker 1: how stuff works dot com. Let us know what you think.
