- 1:09can be turned in gratitude to our amazing God for what He does
- 1:14for us this week. And then of course, Friday being
- 1:17Good Friday, we are not going to escape to the Psalms.
- 1:20But you will find that as we continue in Mark, we will land
- 1:24on the Good Friday reading this Friday.
- 1:27So shout out to Pete and the team that put together the
- 1:30timing of our reading programme to absolutely nail it.
- 1:33Well done. So that's enough said, isn't it?
- 1:37Let us get into it. Let us go back.
- 1:41Let us be a fly on the wall. No, let us be a disciple
- 1:47following our Lord as indeed we are as we see Jesus enter into
- 1:53Jerusalem. For this final week reading
- 1:55together, Mark Chapter 11. As Jesus and his disciples
- 2:10approached Jerusalem, they came to the towns of Bethpage and
- 2:14Bethany on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of them on a
- 2:18head. Go into that village over there,
- 2:21he told them. As soon as you enter it, you
- 2:24will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever
- 2:28written. Untied.
- 2:30And bring it here. If anyone asks what are you
- 2:32doing, Just say the Lord needs it and we'll return it soon.
- 2:39The two disciples left and found the colt standing in the street,
- 2:42tied outside the front door as they were untying it.
- 2:45Some bystanders demanded. What are you doing untying that
- 2:49cult? They said what Jesus had told
- 2:51them to say, and they were permitted to take it.
- 2:55Then they brought the cult to Jesus and threw their garments
- 2:58over it, and he sat on it. Many in the crowd spread their
- 3:03garments on the road ahead of him, and others spread leafy
- 3:06branches they had cut in the fields.
- 3:09Jesus was in the centre of the procession and the people all
- 3:12around him were shouting praise God blessings on the one who
- 3:18comes in the name of the Lord, blessings on the coming Kingdom
- 3:23of our ancestor David, praise God in the highest heaven.
- 3:30So Jesus came to Jerusalem and went into the temple.
- 3:33After looking around carefully at everything, he left because
- 3:37it was late in the afternoon and he returned to Bethany with the
- 3:4112 disciples the next morning. As they were leaving Bethany,
- 3:46Jesus was hungry. He noticed a fig tree in full
- 3:49leaf, a little way off, so he went over to see if he could
- 3:52find any figs. But there were only leaves
- 3:56because it was too early in the season for fruit.
- 3:59Then Jesus said to the tree, may no one ever eat your fruit.
- 4:04Gain. And the disciples heard him say
- 4:07it. When they arrived back in
- 4:09Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple and began to drive out
- 4:13the people, buying and selling animals for sacrifices.
- 4:17He knocked over the tables of money changers and the chairs of
- 4:21those selling doves, and he stopped everyone from using the
- 4:24Temple as a marketplace. He said to them, The scriptures
- 4:28declare my temple will be called a House of prayer for all
- 4:33nations, but you have turned it into a den of thieves.
- 4:38When the leading priests and teachers of religious law heard
- 4:41what Jesus has done, they began planning how to kill him.
- 4:46But they were afraid of him because the people were so
- 4:49amazed at his teaching. That evening, Jesus and the
- 4:53disciples left the city. The next morning, as they passed
- 4:57by the fig tree he had cursed, the disciples noticed that it
- 5:01had withered from the roots up. Peter remembered what Jesus had
- 5:05said to the tree on the previous day and exclaimed.
- 5:08Look Rabbi, the fig tree you cursed has withered and died.
- 5:14Then Jesus said to his disciples, Have faith in God.
- 5:19I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, May you be
- 5:23lifted up and thrown into the sea, and it will happen, but you
- 5:28must really believe it will happen, and have no doubt in
- 5:32your heart. I tell you, you can pray for
- 5:35anything, and if you believe that you've received it, it will
- 5:38be yours. But when you were praying, first
- 5:42forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your
- 5:46Father in heaven will forgive your sins too.
- 5:51Again, they entered Jerusalem. As Jesus was walking through the
- 5:55temple area, the leading priests, the teachers of
- 5:57religious law and the elders came up to him.
- 6:00They demanded, by what authority are you doing all these things?
- 6:05Who gave you the right to do them?
- 6:08I'll tell you by what authority I do these things if you can
- 6:12answer one question, Jesus replied.
- 6:16Did John's authority to baptise come from heaven or was it
- 6:20merely human? Answer me.
- 6:24They talked it over among themselves.
- 6:26If we say it was from heaven, he will ask why.
- 6:30We didn't believe John. But do we dare say it was merely
- 6:33human? For they were afraid of what the
- 6:36people would do because everyone believed John was a prophet.
- 6:40So they finally replied. We don't know.
- 6:43And Jesus responded. Then I won't tell you by what
- 6:47authority I do these things. Jesus, your mission was so clear
- 7:02to you, you had your eye on this week The whole way along.
- 7:06In fact, from the beginning of time you knew that this would be
- 7:10your destiny. But still you chose that.
- 7:14And here we see your invitation to your disciples that you
- 7:20invite them to pray, pray for the things of your Kingdom, and
- 7:24that with their faith you will answer their prayer.
- 7:27You invite us to be a part of this work of sharing your good
- 7:31news and growing your Kingdom. Ah, what an amazing invitation.
- 7:37Jesus. We are so humbled that you, the
- 7:42the God of the universe in human form, invites us into being a
- 7:48part of your mission. Our Lord.
- 7:51This week, as we walk toward that hill on Calvary, just draw
- 7:57our hearts to you. Shape us.
- 8:02We can be your hands and feet in the world that we live.
- 8:08Draw us ever closer to knowing the incredible depth of your
- 8:14love for us with what you do for us.
- 8:15This week we are so grateful and we love you, and it's in your
- 8:20name that we pray Jesus. Amen.
