- 0:00Speaker 1: Good to him. Hope you're bloody terrific. Today will be
- 0:02Speaker 1: a quick one because we can, you know what, and
- 0:06Speaker 1: we don't need to take sixty minutes to say twenty
- 0:09Speaker 1: minutes worth of stuff. So with that in mind, I
- 0:12Speaker 1: was chatting this morning with the fabulous, the very talented
- 0:16Speaker 1: Mike Elrington, who is a musician, who is a singer who,
- 0:20Speaker 1: in my opinion, doesn't get the recognition that he probably
- 0:26Speaker 1: could or should anyway have listened to him on the tubes.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Mike Elrington, he could just very well be the next
- 0:33Speaker 1: big thing. Who knows anyway, I was chatting with Mike
- 0:36Speaker 1: this morning. We had a coffee and I asked him
- 0:39Speaker 1: how old he is, and he won't he won't mind
- 0:42Speaker 1: me telling you that he's forty seven. And he probably
- 0:46Speaker 1: also won't mind me telling you that at forty seven,
- 0:49Speaker 1: he hasn't achieved everything he wants to and that there's
- 0:52Speaker 1: still a few things on the to do list and
- 0:54Speaker 1: the you know, the music list, and the bucket list,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and the life list and the health list and all
- 1:00Speaker 1: the fucking lists that we all have. We maybe don't
- 1:03Speaker 1: all have a music list, but we're talking about, you know,
- 1:07Speaker 1: the very ever present challenge that we all have of
- 1:10Speaker 1: living our best life, creating our best outcomes, you know,
- 1:14Speaker 1: being the writer of our own story rather than a
- 1:17Speaker 1: character in our story, or the driver of our own
- 1:20Speaker 1: bus rather than being a passenger in our own bus,
- 1:24Speaker 1: So that we are living a life which is reflective
- 1:29Speaker 1: of I guess, and aligned with who we want to
- 1:31Speaker 1: be and how we want to be what we want to,
- 1:33Speaker 1: as I've said many times, produce and create and stand
- 1:37Speaker 1: for on planet us. And I said to him, you know,
- 1:41Speaker 1: at one stage, you know you're forty seven, So in
- 1:46Speaker 1: three years you're going to be fifty. And the truth
- 1:48Speaker 1: is that at fifty, in three years, your life's going
- 1:51Speaker 1: to be better, or it's going to be worse, or
- 1:54Speaker 1: it's going to be the same, or you might not
- 1:57Speaker 1: be here. I hope he's here. Let's hope we're all here.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I might not be here. We don't know. That's not
- 2:03Speaker 1: a given. I think you'll definitely be here, but we
- 2:07Speaker 1: don't know. We don't have a crystal ball. So let's
- 2:09Speaker 1: operate on the assumption that I'm going to be here,
- 2:12Speaker 1: You the listener, you're going to be here, and Mike's
- 2:13Speaker 1: going to be here in three years and then I
- 2:16Speaker 1: said to him, so, would you like your life and
- 2:18Speaker 1: all the bits and pieces I won't go into them
- 2:20Speaker 1: that we've been talking about. Would you like your life, situation, circumstance, outcome,
- 2:25Speaker 1: practical reality. Would you be likely to be quite different
- 2:27Speaker 1: to it is now in many ways? And of course,
- 2:30Speaker 1: as is generally the answer, yes, I would not everything,
- 2:34Speaker 1: not all the things, but some of the things. And
- 2:37Speaker 1: if I did a little inventory on Planet Craig, on
- 2:39Speaker 1: my operating system, what I'm doing being creating and not
- 2:43Speaker 1: doing and not being and not creating, I could tell
- 2:45Speaker 1: you some things that I would like to see happening
- 2:49Speaker 1: in three years that aren't currently happening, either at all
- 2:53Speaker 1: or optimally. And that's just about you know, self awareness
- 2:57Speaker 1: and honesty, isn't it. And I said to him, and
- 3:01Speaker 1: this is prompted this chat, I said to him, your
- 3:06Speaker 1: life could literally change direction today, Like you could consciously
- 3:13Speaker 1: do different things today. You could consciously change the way
- 3:19Speaker 1: that you communicate if that needs to change the way
- 3:22Speaker 1: that you live your lifestyle, your sleep, your food, your exercise,
- 3:25Speaker 1: the way that you do your job, branding, marketing, your
- 3:29Speaker 1: current operating system, whatever that is. You could start to
- 3:35Speaker 1: change that today. Not reinvent yourself in two days, not
- 3:39Speaker 1: turn it all upside down, but gradually, over time, create
- 3:46Speaker 1: that three year picture that fifty year old bloke who's
- 3:50Speaker 1: now in a better lifestyle or a better life, or
- 3:53Speaker 1: situation or circumstance or environment or musical career, or physiological
- 3:57Speaker 1: state or relationship broadly speaking, or state of mind or
- 4:02Speaker 1: emotional state whatever, same for all of us. But it
- 4:06Speaker 1: ain't going to fucking happen accidentally. You're not going to
- 4:11Speaker 1: miraculously and magically wake up at fifty having made no effort,
- 4:16Speaker 1: no hard decisions done, no hard work, and somehow be
- 4:20Speaker 1: inhabiting this kind of utopian, beautiful nirvana of an existence.
- 4:26Speaker 1: It ain't happening. It ain't happening. And so it kind
- 4:33Speaker 1: of reminded me of a post that I wrote years ago,
- 4:36Speaker 1: which essentially said, you've had thousands of Mondays, but you've
- 4:39Speaker 1: never had this one. And I don't know what day
- 4:42Speaker 1: it is that you're listening to this, but as I record,
- 4:44Speaker 1: it's Thursday, and I've had I've had thousands of Thursdays,
- 4:48Speaker 1: thousands of Thursdays, but I've never had this Thursday. I've
- 4:51Speaker 1: sat in front of this microphone thousands of times, but
- 4:54Speaker 1: I've never had this conversation. Tomorrow is Friday going to
- 5:00Speaker 1: be familiar in that I've had lots of Fridays, but
- 5:02Speaker 1: it's going to be completely unfamiliar in that I have
- 5:06Speaker 1: never had a twelfth of July twenty twenty four, nor
- 5:11Speaker 1: will I ever have another one. Tomorrow is unique. Today
- 5:16Speaker 1: is unique. It might not feel unique because of the
- 5:19Speaker 1: familiarity of your past, but don't let that feeling of
- 5:26Speaker 1: the familiarity of your past trap you so that you
- 5:31Speaker 1: can't tap into the potential and the possibility of this
- 5:35Speaker 1: moment of today. Like I think about and this sounds
- 5:41Speaker 1: very The last thing I want this to sound like
- 5:44Speaker 1: is a fucking motivational speech. It isn't. And if that's
- 5:50Speaker 1: if that's the effect I'm having, I'm fucking it up.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I really want you, if you want to, of course,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I want you to really think about the practical reality
- 6:03Speaker 1: that every day, every day, even if it doesn't feel
- 6:06Speaker 1: like it, is an opportunity. And it might not be
- 6:10Speaker 1: an opportunity to take over the world or you know,
- 6:14Speaker 1: make a million bucks, but it might be the opportunity
- 6:17Speaker 1: or an opportunity for you to do one small thing
- 6:21Speaker 1: that takes one minute that might create one little bit
- 6:25Speaker 1: of momentum, one minute of doing one thing that you
- 6:29Speaker 1: didn't do yesterday, that could turn into something a bit
- 6:33Speaker 1: bigger and a bit bigger and a bit bigger. All
- 6:36Speaker 1: of the things that I have done in my life
- 6:40Speaker 1: that ended up being something positive and powerful and transformational,
- 6:46Speaker 1: a version of success. All of the things that I
- 6:49Speaker 1: did in my life, including this podcast, started with one
- 6:53Speaker 1: small decision, one idea, one moment in time. And so
- 7:00Speaker 1: this podcast, which is it's not a raving success, but
- 7:04Speaker 1: it does pretty well. Five or six six years, I
- 7:07Speaker 1: think we're in and nearly seventeen hundred episodes, and we're sponsored,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and we make a few dollars and all of that.
- 7:12Speaker 1: And it's been lumpy and bumpy, and there's been good
- 7:15Speaker 1: and bad shows, and there's been amazing and not so
- 7:18Speaker 1: amazing conversations, and there's been refining and defining and recreating
- 7:24Speaker 1: and reinventing and learning and unlearning as I've gone, And
- 7:27Speaker 1: now here I am, all these years later, in these
- 7:30Speaker 1: hundreds slash thousands of episodes later, and we going okay,
- 7:34Speaker 1: and here you are. Yes, you've heard me probably many
- 7:37Speaker 1: times before, but you've never heard me in this moment.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I've never said these exact words ever before in this order,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and definitely not at this time in my journey. The
- 7:51Speaker 1: problem is brothers and sisters, not that we are not
- 7:54Speaker 1: surrounded by opportunities, not that we don't have opportunities of
- 8:00Speaker 1: available to us, but we don't see them. We don't
- 8:05Speaker 1: see them, and we don't create them. We don't create them,
- 8:09Speaker 1: we don't breathe life into them. What some of us
- 8:13Speaker 1: do is sit on our metaphoric ass and hope that
- 8:17Speaker 1: an opportunity will come along, which is analogous to or
- 8:22Speaker 1: the same as crossing your fingers and hoping that you
- 8:27Speaker 1: will succeed, which is a kind of a fucking dumb idea.
- 8:31Speaker 1: If you're a grown up who has the capacity to
- 8:34Speaker 1: act and behave and choose and adapt and improvise and
- 8:38Speaker 1: fall down and get up and be resilient and do
- 8:42Speaker 1: hard things and come out the other side, it's okay
- 8:45Speaker 1: if you're cracking the sads and sitting on the couch
- 8:47Speaker 1: and being a bit of a big baby for a bit,
- 8:51Speaker 1: but not for ten years. If you are always, always
- 8:58Speaker 1: the victim in your life. And I'm not talking about
- 9:02Speaker 1: the horrible shit that happens to people in domestic violence
- 9:05Speaker 1: and all of those we're putting that aside for this conversation.
- 9:08Speaker 1: We're talking about personal growth and achievement. But if somebody
- 9:13Speaker 1: else is always the problem, there's a fair chance they're
- 9:16Speaker 1: not always the problem. And this is not self loathing,
- 9:19Speaker 1: This is self awareness, This is honesty, This is humility.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I can tell you openly and honestly that at least
- 9:26Speaker 1: half of the time, the problems in my life, probably
- 9:28Speaker 1: more the problems in my life, the barriers in my life,
- 9:33Speaker 1: the shitty outcomes in my life have been because of me.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I created them, not intentionally, but I created them. So
- 9:43Speaker 1: I want to share with you some of the things
- 9:45Speaker 1: that we get the opportunity now, We get the opportunity
- 9:50Speaker 1: just because we wake up to do every day. These
- 9:54Speaker 1: are some of the things. I wrote a little list,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and there are a million more. I don't want to
- 9:58Speaker 1: bore you. So every day you and I get the
- 10:02Speaker 1: opportunity to change the direction of our life or the
- 10:05Speaker 1: quality of our life. If that doesn't mean we're going
- 10:08Speaker 1: to change it by lunchtime, but we get the opportunity
- 10:12Speaker 1: to move the needle. We get the opportunity to make
- 10:16Speaker 1: a decision to be brave, to be resilient, to take
- 10:20Speaker 1: some action, to have a conversation, to step up, to
- 10:24Speaker 1: own up, to be courageous. Every day you get the
- 10:29Speaker 1: chance to do that. You do not need a fucking invitation.
- 10:34Speaker 1: You do not need a cheer squad. You do not
- 10:37Speaker 1: need accolades. You do not need a medal or a ribbon,
- 10:40Speaker 1: because you're a fucking adult. And if you need those things,
- 10:45Speaker 1: then that's another problem that you need to overcome. Stop
- 10:50Speaker 1: looking for approval, stop looking for a pat on the back,
- 10:57Speaker 1: stop looking for someone to say gave you or solve
- 11:01Speaker 1: you. You are the answer. That doesn't mean there won't be
- 11:05Speaker 1: people that will support you or care about you. And
- 11:11Speaker 1: support and care and friendship and love and all of
- 11:15Speaker 1: those things are fucking amazing, of course, but if day
- 11:18Speaker 1: to day you and me can't function unless we've got
- 11:21Speaker 1: somebody three feet away going, come on, harps, you're fucking amazing.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Oh my god, Look at what you said on that
- 11:28Speaker 1: podcast that was brilliant. Look at what you wrote on
- 11:31Speaker 1: that whiteboard, Look at that gig that you did for
- 11:33Speaker 1: those Oh my god, and look at your fucking shoulders.
- 11:36Speaker 1: You're a giant. What am I doing here. If I
- 11:40Speaker 1: need all of that bullshit, then I am the biggest
- 11:42Speaker 1: problem in my life. I don't need that. I don't
- 11:46Speaker 1: need that. If people like what I do, all sill
- 11:50Speaker 1: in a society. If people like what I do, that's great,
- 11:53Speaker 1: and I hope, of course I want people to like
- 11:55Speaker 1: what I do. But I don't need constant accolades. Of course,
- 11:59Speaker 1: I'm going to pay attention as a somewhat very low
- 12:03Speaker 1: profile public figure. I'm going to pay attention to whether
- 12:08Speaker 1: or not my stuff is for one of better term, working, resonating, connecting.
- 12:13Speaker 1: If I'm getting constant shit feedback about something I'm doing,
- 12:16Speaker 1: I'm either going to change or get out. But you
- 12:20Speaker 1: and I, every day, you and I, me and you
- 12:22Speaker 1: the listener, we get the opportunity to do things differently.
- 12:28Speaker 1: We get the opportunity to think about how we think
- 12:33Speaker 1: and to be brave enough to own up to our bullshit.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Every day. Every day, every day, I get the opportunity
- 12:42Speaker 1: to recognize the things that I'm doing currently that aren't working.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And every day I get the opportunity to be brave
- 12:52Speaker 1: and say, I'm doing this thing and it isn't working,
- 12:56Speaker 1: and so what I'm going to do is I'm going
- 12:58Speaker 1: to change this thing that doesn't work. I'm going to
- 13:00Speaker 1: try something else. It might not work, but I'm going
- 13:03Speaker 1: to keep trying, keep improvising and adapting until I figure
- 13:07Speaker 1: it out. And if I fail, great, and if it's uncomfortable, great,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and if I fuck up great. Because I'm in the
- 13:13Speaker 1: middle of the failing and the fucking up and in
- 13:16Speaker 1: the middle of the pain and then convenience. I'm learning,
- 13:18Speaker 1: I'm growing, I'm adapting, I'm evolving. I'm becoming a better
- 13:22Speaker 1: version of me every day. Every day. You can choose
- 13:26Speaker 1: the hard thing that most people avoid because you say
- 13:31Speaker 1: you want to be more resilient. Maybe you don't, But
- 13:34Speaker 1: if you do want to be more resilient, if you
- 13:38Speaker 1: do want to be more resilient, more capable, you want
- 13:40Speaker 1: to be able to be the calm person in the
- 13:42Speaker 1: middle of the chaos, then choose to do the hard thing.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Choose to do the inconvenient, uncomfortable thing that you know
- 13:50Speaker 1: you should do. I'm not talking about choose the hard, reckless,
- 13:54Speaker 1: stupid thing. I'm talking about the thing that strategically you
- 13:58Speaker 1: know will help you grow, learn, evolved, to improve, get
- 14:01Speaker 1: where you want to go. But it's a bit fucking
- 14:03Speaker 1: hard or uncomfortable or terrifying. Nonetheless, you know it's the
- 14:06Speaker 1: right thing. I'm talking about that every day you get
- 14:12Speaker 1: the opportunity to be courageous. Every day you get the
- 14:17Speaker 1: opportunity to ask better questions, to ask better questions that
- 14:23Speaker 1: will lead you to better choices, to better behaviors and
- 14:27Speaker 1: better outcomes. Every day you get the opportunity to lean
- 14:31Speaker 1: into this idea of self awareness. How can I understand
- 14:38Speaker 1: me more? How can I understand me in the relation
- 14:42Speaker 1: to others? Every day you can choose to be curious
- 14:46Speaker 1: about the people with whom you intersect. What is their reality?
- 14:51Speaker 1: How do they think? Why do they think the way
- 14:54Speaker 1: that they think? What is the gap between my thinking
- 14:58Speaker 1: and their thinking? Where does that belief of theirs come from? Remember,
- 15:05Speaker 1: seek first to understand and then to be understood. Every
- 15:11Speaker 1: day you can choose to have better conversations with people
- 15:15Speaker 1: if you don't need to agree or align or condone
- 15:18Speaker 1: their thinking or their stance, or their beliefs or their ideology.
- 15:22Speaker 1: But you can listen. Every day. You can have better
- 15:27Speaker 1: conversations with your kids, with your partner, with your family,
- 15:31Speaker 1: with your friends, with your staff, with your boss. With
- 15:34Speaker 1: everyone that you intersect with on a daily basis, you
- 15:39Speaker 1: can listen more. You can turn up the volume on
- 15:46Speaker 1: your own situational and self awareness in the middle of
- 15:49Speaker 1: a moment with another human, just by being thoughtful, just
- 15:55Speaker 1: by hitting the pause button and talking less. Sometimes every day,
- 16:03Speaker 1: you and I, every day we get the opportunity to
- 16:07Speaker 1: share love and kindness, not because we're getting something back.
- 16:12Speaker 1: That's not love, that's a transaction. You get the choice,
- 16:18Speaker 1: you get the opportunity, You get the blessing of blessing others.
- 16:23Speaker 1: You get the opportunity every day to have a purpose
- 16:27Speaker 1: bigger than you. That doesn't mean you need to neglect you.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Neither does that mean you need to be an emotional
- 16:33Speaker 1: doormat for somebody. But it means that you get the
- 16:37Speaker 1: opportunity to love a stranger, to do some kindness, to
- 16:41Speaker 1: inject and affect the people around you with great energy
- 16:46Speaker 1: every day. And you might go, yeah, but what if
- 16:51Speaker 1: I feel shit? Great question. I get it. I get it.
- 16:55Speaker 1: There have been many times in my life when I
- 16:58Speaker 1: was not having a good day, somewhere between dogshit and
- 17:01Speaker 1: not good, and I had to go and do a thing.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I had to go and have a conversation. I had
- 17:07Speaker 1: to do a presentation, I had to do a radio interview,
- 17:11Speaker 1: I had to do a podcast. And I couldn't jump
- 17:14Speaker 1: on the radio and say, guess what, everybody, I'm having
- 17:16Speaker 1: a bad day. I'm a bit flat, I'm a bit sad,
- 17:19Speaker 1: so this is going to be shit. So just I
- 17:22Speaker 1: couldn't do that, So I would get on I would say,
- 17:27Speaker 1: I'm going to my story to myself. My conversation with
- 17:31Speaker 1: myself is I'm going to do the very best I
- 17:33Speaker 1: can do. And usually not always, but usually by the
- 17:37Speaker 1: time I would I would invest into somebody else, somebody
- 17:41Speaker 1: else's issue, somebody else's problem, somebody else's reality. I would
- 17:46Speaker 1: try to get out of mind and into theirs. And
- 17:48Speaker 1: the funny thing was, by not concentrating on me, by
- 17:52Speaker 1: not ruminating on my issues, by investing and paying attention
- 17:56Speaker 1: to somebody else, my stuff somehow got better or at
- 18:02Speaker 1: the very least improved. All of these things that I'm
- 18:06Speaker 1: sharing with you, by the way, are not easy. So
- 18:14Speaker 1: if you are after easy, this ain't the podcast for you.
- 18:18Speaker 1: These things that we need to do to really create
- 18:22Speaker 1: a better life, a better us, a better existence over
- 18:25Speaker 1: the long term, so that you and me and Mike
- 18:28Speaker 1: wake up in three years and he's fifty and I'm
- 18:31Speaker 1: sixty three, and you'll you now plus three, and you
- 18:34Speaker 1: can look back and go those three years were fucking
- 18:37Speaker 1: amazing because I made them amazing. I made decisions. Every day.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I made decisions, I took action. I had shit days
- 18:47Speaker 1: and good days, but every day I tried. Here's a
- 18:50Speaker 1: thing you can do in the middle of the worst day.
- 18:52Speaker 1: You can try, in the middle of the worst situation.
- 18:57Speaker 1: You can find one little thing to be grateful for.
- 19:01Speaker 1: And we're not pretending that bad things don't happen to
- 19:03Speaker 1: good people here. This is not what this chat is about.
- 19:08Speaker 1: We know that there is lots of injustice, We know
- 19:10Speaker 1: that there is lots of pain and suffering, and I'm
- 19:13Speaker 1: not neglecting or denying any of that. But I am
- 19:18Speaker 1: saying that you and I, whether or not you and
- 19:22Speaker 1: I've got three years, thirty years, or sixty years, I
- 19:24Speaker 1: definitely have sixty you might have, but every day is
- 19:30Speaker 1: an opportunity to do something better. It is an opportunity
- 19:35Speaker 1: for you and me to do a treasure hunt on
- 19:37Speaker 1: our lives, our respective lives. It's an opportunity for me
- 19:42Speaker 1: to go like, I haven't thought about this at all,
- 19:44Speaker 1: but right in the moment, I go, well, I'm a
- 19:46Speaker 1: sixty year old dude, I'm sitting here. I've got a
- 19:48Speaker 1: podcast that people listen to. I'm so grateful for that.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I've got some speaking gigs book next week. I'm so
- 19:54Speaker 1: grateful for that. I'm so grateful that my eighty five
- 19:57Speaker 1: year old dad is training in the gym three times
- 19:59Speaker 1: a week and seem on a Saturday, we hang out,
- 20:02Speaker 1: We connect and we lift some shit together, and we're
- 20:04Speaker 1: getting closer. And he's eighty five and I'm sixty. I
- 20:08Speaker 1: love the fact that my mum gets excited to see
- 20:11Speaker 1: me every Saturday and cooks food for me to bring
- 20:14Speaker 1: back to Melbourne because she still thinks I'm fucking twenty
- 20:17Speaker 1: years old. Don't tell her I'm not. But I love that.
- 20:22Speaker 1: I love that my mom and dad are alive and operational.
- 20:24Speaker 1: I love the fact that I get the opportunity to
- 20:30Speaker 1: have this job that isn't a fucking job, doesn't feel
- 20:34Speaker 1: like a job. I love the fact that every day
- 20:38Speaker 1: I have the opportunity to impact the lives of people
- 20:44Speaker 1: who want to think, do be, and create better. I
- 20:47Speaker 1: love that I'm so grateful for that. I'm so grateful
- 20:51Speaker 1: that I can walk up the stairs. I'm so grateful
- 20:54Speaker 1: that I can turn on a tap and have hot
- 20:55Speaker 1: water or cold water. I'm so grateful that I can
- 20:58Speaker 1: sleep in a clean bear in a safe town. I'm
- 21:03Speaker 1: so grateful that I can have a hot shower. It's
- 21:07Speaker 1: fucking incredible. I'm so grateful that I've got to support
- 21:10Speaker 1: team around me who empower me and encourage and support
- 21:14Speaker 1: and enable me to do what I'm doing right now.
- 21:17Speaker 1: I'm so grateful that tear for Melissa, I'm not sure
- 21:21Speaker 1: is going to listen to this and edit this, take
- 21:23Speaker 1: out all the coffs and farts and burps and bullshit
- 21:26Speaker 1: that you guys don't here, lucky you, and make this
- 21:29Speaker 1: better than it currently is. I'm so grateful for that.
- 21:35Speaker 1: But gratitude is a choice, and gratitude is an opportunity
- 21:41Speaker 1: for us every day to step into that. Every day
- 21:46Speaker 1: you have an opportunity to have a different kind of
- 21:50Speaker 1: conversation with someone, to step out of the groundhog day
- 21:55Speaker 1: of those mindless, pointless, unhealthy, toxic relationships that you may
- 22:00Speaker 1: have with certain people at certain times that don't work.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Every day you have and I have an opportunity to
- 22:11Speaker 1: do something new, to do something that you've never done.
- 22:16Speaker 1: At sixty, I'm still doing things for the first time,
- 22:20Speaker 1: things I've never done. Yesterday I had a meeting with
- 22:24Speaker 1: my senior supervisor of my PhD, Chris. Shout out to
- 22:27Speaker 1: Chris and he said, do you want to come rock
- 22:29Speaker 1: climbing with me next week? And you know what, I
- 22:31Speaker 1: don't want to go rock climbing. Fuck rock climbing. But
- 22:34Speaker 1: I went, yes, I do. I went, fuck, yes, let's
- 22:39Speaker 1: go rock climbing. Do I think I'm going to be
- 22:42Speaker 1: good at rock climbing? No? Do I want to go
- 22:46Speaker 1: and do something? Then? In sixty years of my life,
- 22:48Speaker 1: I've never done how I do. My curiosity and my
- 22:54Speaker 1: drive to do something new out ways the lack of
- 22:58Speaker 1: excitement I have climbing. But I also know, because I
- 23:02Speaker 1: know me, I might go rock climbing and go this
- 23:06Speaker 1: is fucking great. I'm a rock climber now. But guess
- 23:10Speaker 1: what if I said no to Chris, It's never happening,
- 23:13Speaker 1: or more than likely on planet me, it's never happening.
- 23:17Speaker 1: You and I get the opportunity at any age to
- 23:20Speaker 1: do new things. My dad at eighty five is learning
- 23:26Speaker 1: how to squat and deadlift at eighty five, how to
- 23:29Speaker 1: do it well. My dad at eighty five is building
- 23:33Speaker 1: muscle and function and balance and muscular and aerobic endurance.
- 23:37Speaker 1: And he's improving not only his quality of life, but
- 23:40Speaker 1: his quality of living his health span. He's improving his
- 23:45Speaker 1: health span. Why because every day he's seizing the opportunity
- 23:52Speaker 1: to manipulate his biological age by making better decisions, eating
- 23:57Speaker 1: better food, doing better things, and moving his body in
- 24:00Speaker 1: a way that most people won't do. Other people his age,
- 24:05Speaker 1: or any age, let's go, any age, have the opportunity
- 24:08Speaker 1: every day to do something good for their body. Of course,
- 24:13Speaker 1: of course there's not meant to be judgment or ridicule
- 24:18Speaker 1: or anything, but it's just is it true? Is it true?
- 24:20Speaker 1: Can we go from five minute walk? Can we know? Well, well,
- 24:23Speaker 1: yeah we can. But do we know? Sometimes we do?
- 24:27Speaker 1: Sometimes we don't. How many people have sat in front
- 24:31Speaker 1: of me, and I've said this ten times on this show,
- 24:33Speaker 1: but how many people have sat in front of me
- 24:35Speaker 1: and said something like when they get to whatever age
- 24:39Speaker 1: they're at, sitting in front of me, and they're not
- 24:41Speaker 1: in the place literally, mentally, emotionally, physically, financially that they
- 24:45Speaker 1: wanted to be and they're sitting in front of me
- 24:47Speaker 1: somewhat broken, and they say something like this wasn't my plan.
- 24:54Speaker 1: And I say, as you know what I'm going to say,
- 24:57Speaker 1: I say, can I see the plan? And they go
- 25:00Speaker 1: what do you mean? And I said, well, you said
- 25:02Speaker 1: this wasn't your current state, your current reality, wasn't your plan,
- 25:08Speaker 1: kind of inferring how did I end up here? And
- 25:11Speaker 1: I'm going, sure, could I just see the plan? And
- 25:15Speaker 1: the truth is there is no plan. They didn't have
- 25:17Speaker 1: a plan, they didn't have an accountability process, they didn't
- 25:21Speaker 1: make hard decisions and do hard things. They didn't have
- 25:24Speaker 1: it to do list that they followed. They didn't have
- 25:27Speaker 1: clear and specific and measurable goals. They weren't resilient. They
- 25:31Speaker 1: didn't fall down and get up. They just kind of
- 25:34Speaker 1: ambled along in a version of comfort, a reality of
- 25:41Speaker 1: comfort and avoidance, and waited for things to fuck up
- 25:45Speaker 1: before not everybody, of course, but quite a lot of
- 25:49Speaker 1: people before they would make a decision, and ultimately when
- 25:53Speaker 1: they would make significant life changing decisions was either when
- 25:57Speaker 1: there was a catastrophe or they were terrified, or they
- 26:00Speaker 1: got some terrible news about their health. This is not
- 26:04Speaker 1: to be critical, This is to be truthful. This is
- 26:06Speaker 1: to be aware your life. I'm going to say it again.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Your life will not be magically better in a year
- 26:14Speaker 1: from now, two years from now, five years from now.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Having said that, it could be astoundingly different if you
- 26:23Speaker 1: see every day as an opportunity to do something to
- 26:27Speaker 1: create positive impact with your health, with your career, with
- 26:31Speaker 1: your mindset, with your finances, with your relationships, with your lifestyle,
- 26:36Speaker 1: with your fill in the blank, fill in the blank,
- 26:38Speaker 1: fill in the blank, whatever the fuck you need to
- 26:41Speaker 1: do better at on planet. You don't wait for the
- 26:46Speaker 1: motivation or the inspiration to kick in, or the cheer
- 26:50Speaker 1: squad or the opportunity fairy to at your door. The
- 26:56Speaker 1: opportunity fairy ain't fucking coming. The opportunity unity fairy, The
- 27:01Speaker 1: creator of opportunities, the maximizer of opportunities is you. It's you.
- 27:09Speaker 1: The answer to nearly all your problems, not all, but
- 27:12Speaker 1: nearly all your problems is you. If not directly you,
- 27:17Speaker 1: then you are the conduit to the answer. Just like well,
- 27:24Speaker 1: don't know you, but I can tell you that for me,
- 27:27Speaker 1: most of the problems. As I said earlier that I've had,
- 27:30Speaker 1: or I've had to negotiate and navigate. Most of them
- 27:34Speaker 1: at least had something to do with me. Every day
- 27:41Speaker 1: you have the opportunity to move your body differently, to
- 27:44Speaker 1: put different things in your body. What if you just
- 27:47Speaker 1: put different things in your body, be that food, drug, drugs, booze, supplements, water,
- 27:53Speaker 1: or you stop putting some things in your body. What
- 27:58Speaker 1: if you stopped. What if today you rationalized doing better
- 28:05Speaker 1: things and stopped rationalizing while you're doing those things that
- 28:11Speaker 1: are counterintuitive and counterproductive to your own fucking happiness, your
- 28:16Speaker 1: own health, your own health span, your own longevity, your
- 28:19Speaker 1: own quality of life, your own mental and emotional health.
- 28:24Speaker 1: What if you chose to be brave, not because there's
- 28:28Speaker 1: a written invitation in the mail, not because I'm going
- 28:31Speaker 1: to be there standing in the fucking corner. That'd be creepy.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I don't know why I said that, cheering you on,
- 28:39Speaker 1: but just because you know that on some level, and
- 28:44Speaker 1: this might not be all of you, but there's definitely
- 28:46Speaker 1: will be some some of you that you've been fucking
- 28:49Speaker 1: around and bullshitting others and bullshitting yourself. My friends, every
- 28:57Speaker 1: day is an opportunity because you wake up if you
- 29:02Speaker 1: wake up, if you can breathe, if you can get
- 29:05Speaker 1: out of bed, if you can think, if you can
- 29:07Speaker 1: do things, if you can make decisions, if you don't
- 29:12Speaker 1: live in third world poverty or a war zone, which
- 29:15Speaker 1: most of you don't, thankfully, and if you don't live
- 29:20Speaker 1: with a significant disability, which most of you don't, thankfully,
- 29:23Speaker 1: and even those of you who do, And I know
- 29:26Speaker 1: there's a bunch of you that listen. And I also
- 29:28Speaker 1: know that you people who really have big challenges. Quite
- 29:32Speaker 1: often you're far far in fact, not quite often. Most
- 29:36Speaker 1: of the time, you're far more inspirational than I'll ever
- 29:40Speaker 1: even dream of being. So, my friends, the day is
- 29:45Speaker 1: a day. Tomorrow is a day you've never had this day.
- 29:48Speaker 1: You've had lots of ones like it, but you've never
- 29:50Speaker 1: had this one. As I wind this up, I want
- 29:55Speaker 1: to suggest to you or if you would allow me
- 29:58Speaker 1: to coach you, if not turn off, but if you
- 30:01Speaker 1: would allow me to coach you, I would tell you this,
- 30:08Speaker 1: don't let your mind continue to get in the way
- 30:13Speaker 1: of doing the work. If you want to find another
- 30:17Speaker 1: reason to not make the decision, to not do the work,
- 30:20Speaker 1: to not be resilient, to not keep showing up to
- 30:23Speaker 1: not tap into your potential, to not optimize your talent
- 30:27Speaker 1: and your energy and your time and your resources. If
- 30:31Speaker 1: you want to keep making excuses to not do that,
- 30:34Speaker 1: you will. You will easily find an excuse that you
- 30:39Speaker 1: can convince people it's actually a reason, but it ain't
- 30:44Speaker 1: a reason, it's an excuse. Rather than that, find a reason,
- 30:52Speaker 1: find a real reason to seize every opportunity, to create
- 30:58Speaker 1: every opportunity every day. I love your guts. See yeah,
