- 0:00Speaker 1: I mean, not. All right. Here we go in three, two,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and one. All right.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Picture this. Outback Truckers on stage. That's what's happening. Outback
- 0:12Speaker 2: Truckers live, bringing a brand new stage show, bringing three
- 0:17Speaker 2: of Outback Truckers' most recognisable personalities together live for the
- 0:21Speaker 2: first time on stage in Perth and Mandurah next April,
- 0:24Speaker 2: and two of them, With us right now, Yogi and Sludge.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Good morning.
- 0:28Speaker 3: I have to ask.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Lisa, come on. Good morning. G'day. How are you? The
- 0:31Speaker 1: obvious first question.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I have to ask right off the top how the nicknames.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I'm always intrigued by how Australians get their nicknames.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Do you want to? Glenn and Paul, if you want
- 0:41Speaker 1: to get official. No, no, no.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Well, mine was first day in Australia, 1986.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Yes.
- 0:49Speaker 3: We were down in Fremantle having a few beers.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yes.
- 0:52Speaker 3: And I didn't realise that everyone's a bit tame over here.
- 0:55Speaker 3: They drink midis. Well, in New Zealand, everyone drinks jugs.
- 0:57Speaker 1: That's right, because it's a Kiwi. Yeah.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I've actually lived here longer than I have in New Zealand.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Oh, good. So you've still got the accent.
- 1:04Speaker 3: A little teeny bit. I, um.
- 1:06Speaker 5: Got mine done at Armidale Hospital. They took half my
- 1:08Speaker 5: brain out and I've become an Aussie.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Oh, God. Can you move to the West All? He's
- 1:12Speaker 1: still a Kiwi.
- 1:13Speaker 4: He's still a Kiwi.
- 1:17Speaker 5: And, yeah, so I was drinking jugs and it started
- 1:19Speaker 5: off the next morning as, you've got that sludge pump
- 1:22Speaker 5: and then the sludge guts. And then it got hyphened
- 1:25Speaker 5: to sludge in the first 24 hours I was in Australia.
- 1:28Speaker 3: So it actually stuck. To everyone's amazement, even my mother
- 1:33Speaker 3: used to call me sludge.
- 1:34Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Yeah, because nobody knew my name.
- 1:37Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:37Speaker 3: No, well, that's the case.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, Yogi, what's your excuse? Ah, right-o. Swinging from trees.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Saddle up, ladies and gentlemen. I'm a big bear. Oh, okay.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So I know you can't see that.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So Yogi Bear.
- 1:48Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Gotcha. I know it's not good for radio when you're visual.
- 1:52Speaker 5: Oh, in that way.
- 1:52Speaker 1: But I am a big bear-like figure, you know, so, yeah.
- 1:56Speaker 6: And, look, I do give a pretty good hug, but
- 1:58Speaker 6: at the end of the day, I was.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Working in the bush. Yeah, big cuddly bear. I am cuddly.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I've been cuddly ever since I was, you know, born.
- 2:04Speaker 6: But, yeah, I grow a beard, work in the bush,
- 2:06Speaker 6: always smile and say they call me Yogi and stuff.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So I got that at 18. That's nice and tame. Yeah,
- 2:10Speaker 1: it is. It's nice and tame. No drinking, no bad things.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So I'm a family side of the show.
- 2:15Speaker 2: That's nasty. So you spent a lot of time behind
- 2:19Speaker 2: the wheel. What sort of drew you to it?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Because it's isolating.
- 2:24Speaker 2: It's great. That's what drew you to it?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:28Speaker 6: So the best thing about the job is the worst
- 2:30Speaker 6: thing about the job is we don't know what's around
- 2:32Speaker 6: the corner, but we don't know what's around the corner.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Literally.
- 2:34Speaker 3: So it's great.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah. It's a really, really good job to do. It's peaceful.
- 2:39Speaker 1: It is peaceful.
- 2:40Speaker 3: You know, you spend a lot of time by yourself
- 2:42Speaker 3: and people always ask, how.
- 2:43Speaker 1: The hell do you do it?
- 2:44Speaker 3: Well, if you love your job. It's just an everyday thing.
- 2:49Speaker 3: The solitude, the places we get to go, the sky
- 2:53Speaker 3: we see at night.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Oh, I can imagine.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Anyone who's never been out of the city has no
- 2:58Speaker 2: idea what the sky looks like.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I love playing that game.
- 3:02Speaker 6: Where did I have a coffee 23 hours ago?
- 3:05Speaker 1: That's a game.
- 3:06Speaker 4: You play a lot. You guys are on the road
- 3:09Speaker 4: all the time, in town, out of town. Hey, what's
- 3:12Speaker 4: the most scary, being out there or being in town?
- 3:15Speaker 1: For me, it's town. Yeah, in town. Why would you
- 3:18Speaker 1: come into town? Sometimes you've got to. We're outback truckers. Yeah,
- 3:22Speaker 1: we're outback truckers.
- 3:23Speaker 5: You know, when I had the tankers and stuff, I
- 3:26Speaker 5: would come into town, go to sleep just out of town,
- 3:29Speaker 5: and come and have three or four hours sleep and
- 3:31Speaker 5: wait from five o'clock to eight o'clock at night and
- 3:34Speaker 5: come in when everyone's knocked off and the roads are quiet.
- 3:36Speaker 6: Right.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah, because the town used to just give you the
- 3:38Speaker 3: shits and drive you mad.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:41Speaker 3: So you sort of work around.
- 3:42Speaker 1: This town in particular? No, every town. No, we love
- 3:45Speaker 1: the towns. Yeah. I've slept under the Sydney Harbour Bridge before.
- 3:48Speaker 6: You know, look, it's kind of, yeah, carted freight in
- 3:49Speaker 6: there on the harbour and drop the poles in there,
- 3:51Speaker 6: concrete poles, so you get a chance to sleep under
- 3:53Speaker 6: the harbour bridge.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So you wake up and look out the window. It
- 3:55Speaker 1: must have been a 24-point turn to get it in there. Yeah,
- 3:58Speaker 1: we have skills to pay the bills.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I've never driven, you know, in the really outback, outback.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I've driven to Geraldsham.
- 4:04Speaker 4: And I know sometimes you're.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Driving along and sometimes out of the corner of your
- 4:10Speaker 2: eye you see something and you think, what the?
- 4:13Speaker 6: What is that?
- 4:13Speaker 1: It wasn't a fire truck.
- 4:14Speaker 2: What is the weirdest thing you've driven past?
- 4:17Speaker 3: Like for me, it's just an emu.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Or something like that.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Or a goat.
- 4:20Speaker 6: There was a bloke hooking up a road train in
- 4:22Speaker 6: a tanker one day. He was a big, weird-looking bloke. Anyway,
- 4:24Speaker 6: we were snapping through together, and he made a comment
- 4:27Speaker 6: on there. He looked, yeah, I can do a road train.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Sludge.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:33Speaker 3: He's the king of oversize in one trailer. That's how you.
- 4:38Speaker 1: Do it, Yogi. I'm only a little outback trucker.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Have you ever felt like, gee, I'm in real trouble here.
- 4:46Speaker 4: How am I going to get out of this?
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah, walking into a radio interview. We're in strife here.
- 4:52Speaker 6: There isn't a microphone on the UHF.
- 4:57Speaker 4: They're out of their comfort zone, you can tell.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Sweating over here.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Do you talk on the thingy like BJ and the Bear?
- 5:03Speaker 2: You know, hey, big buddy.
- 5:05Speaker 1: BJ and the Yogi Bear. Yogi Bear.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Of course, yes.
- 5:08Speaker 1: We're all over this. We should do it.
- 5:10Speaker 3: The CB. The CB radio.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Yeah, we do. It's got to be a bit of fun.
- 5:13Speaker 5: We do.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It is good. It is a great life. Yeah.
- 5:17Speaker 6: You've got to understand that you're happy in your own
- 5:18Speaker 6: skin in what we do. So you'll never see us together,
- 5:22Speaker 6: three of us on stage ever.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:25Speaker 6: So this is a world premiere for it, you know.
- 5:29Speaker 6: We don't ever just stand there. We love people, but
- 5:32Speaker 6: we don't need people as such. So my biggest year
- 5:35Speaker 6: away is 300 nights away from home. Wow.
- 5:37Speaker 1: So I've got a wife and two kids.
- 5:39Speaker 6: Which are awesome, you know, and a great understanding wife.
- 5:42Speaker 6: So this is what you'll see with Outback Truckers Live.
- 5:44Speaker 6: So you go to outbacktruckerslive.com, you'll get to log in, pre-register,
- 5:48Speaker 6: you get to see the behind the scenes. Stuff you
- 5:51Speaker 6: won't ever catch on the TV.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Well, that's right.
- 5:53Speaker 4: There'll be a lot of stuff on the big screen,
- 5:55Speaker 4: on the stage.
- 5:56Speaker 1: There's a lot going on. Telling trucking stories. And you
- 5:59Speaker 1: guys interacting.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I have one more question.
- 6:01Speaker 1: We love questions.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Have you ever suffered the consequences of a particularly bad
- 6:05Speaker 2: dim sim or something from a roadside?
- 6:07Speaker 1: I'm sure she must have. Do you call yourself a
- 6:14Speaker 1: real trucker if you haven't? Yeah. Have you never gone
- 6:17Speaker 1: into a hot box and go, no, I'll have three
- 6:18Speaker 1: of them? What do you mean you're going to give
- 6:20Speaker 1: them to me for a dollar? No, that'll be fine.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I'll take all six.
- 6:25Speaker 6: We're going to buy some and put chicken salt on them.
- 6:27Speaker 6: We're going to make that happen. I wonder why that's
- 6:29Speaker 6: a problem.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I have one more question that I want you guys
- 6:33Speaker 4: to share with us. What is the one thing? that
- 6:36Speaker 4: you would like the average driver on the road today
- 6:39Speaker 4: to consider when in the vicinity of one of your
- 6:42Speaker 4: big rigs?
- 6:45Speaker 3: I think it's probably....
- 6:48Speaker 5: We need to be teaching the young ones how... Like,
- 6:51Speaker 5: trucks are big things. They don't stop in two seconds.
- 6:55Speaker 5: All of my kids, we've taken them for a ride
- 6:58Speaker 5: to Freo in the truck before they've got their licences,
- 7:01Speaker 5: and they come home freaked out.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Dad, they... The car just cut you off.
- 7:05Speaker 1: The gap, yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 3: And I'm like, yeah. And they've actually become.
- 7:08Speaker 5: Better drivers of it. And I'm a believer we should
- 7:11Speaker 5: be teaching young ones, you know, more about trucks and
- 7:14Speaker 5: stuff so that they understand how big we really are.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 5: And we've now just gone to another league in Perth, especially.
- 7:23Speaker 5: We're running three trailers right through the city and stuff.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Yeah. And people just don't understand how big you are.
- 7:29Speaker 2: It doesn't stop like a Kia.
- 7:30Speaker 3: No, no.
- 7:31Speaker 1: It doesn't.
- 7:32Speaker 4: And a truck V Kia, the truck is going to win.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly. Truck's going to win every time.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I think, you know, we're not.
- 7:42Speaker 6: Lumps of metal going down the road. The road is
- 7:45Speaker 6: actually our workplace.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:47Speaker 6: So if you think about your workplace, I won't come
- 7:49Speaker 6: in here and press buttons unless you want me to.
- 7:51Speaker 6: You know, like I can do it and I'm going
- 7:53Speaker 6: to bugger something up. But just be nice out on
- 7:55Speaker 6: the road. Understand that there's a human behind the wheel
- 7:57Speaker 6: that is in charge of a vehicle that, you know,
- 8:00Speaker 6: has unpredictable elements. So just pay attention. Just honestly pay attention.
- 8:04Speaker 6: We lack attention across every driver.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So just pay attention. Too true.
- 8:08Speaker 2: And a thank you wave.
- 8:10Speaker 1: And a thank you wave doesn't mean so. It doesn't
- 8:12Speaker 1: mean so. Yeah, so kids are now.
- 8:14Speaker 6: Coming up to me from being on our back truck
- 8:17Speaker 6: is doing the yogi wave.
- 8:18Speaker 3: The yogi wave.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yeah, the yogi wave. We love the yogi wave.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Yeah, the yogi wave. I do that all day long.
- 8:23Speaker 6: I didn't realise I was doing a yogi wave.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Yeah, you're doing a yogi wave.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Funny as.
- 8:26Speaker 1: It does mean. I love waving. A hell of a lot.
- 8:28Speaker 5: When somebody passes you and they give you a toot
- 8:30Speaker 5: or they give.
- 8:31Speaker 3: You a hug.
- 8:32Speaker 1: It's sad.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 8:33Speaker 1: It brings you out of your thoughts. Oh, this is great.
- 8:35Speaker 1: We love this job.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Bring back the Yogi wave.
- 8:38Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:39Speaker 4: 11 seasons this thing has been going.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I know.
- 8:41Speaker 4: They see it in Slovakia or in Poland and all
- 8:44Speaker 4: over the place.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Yeah, we're huge in Germany.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 1: We were dubbed into German. Really interesting. We were dubbed
- 8:49Speaker 1: into German, right?
- 8:51Speaker 6: So my wife is on the show with me as well.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 6: I was a trendy, hip, young German bloke, and Amanda
- 8:58Speaker 6: was an older German lady, and it was hilarious. But Amanda,
- 9:01Speaker 6: you've got to come watch this. She wasn't overly impressed.
- 9:05Speaker 3: But that was, I remember the day that somebody sent
- 9:08Speaker 3: us that.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Out of nowhere, it just came onto our phones.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:11Speaker 3: And that was just.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Hilarious.
- 9:13Speaker 1: What the hell?
- 9:14Speaker 3: You know, I'm talking in German. I don't know bloody English,
- 9:16Speaker 3: let alone German.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Guys, thanks for coming in.
- 9:20Speaker 1: It's been a pleasure. Thank you so much.
- 9:21Speaker 2: We look forward to the shows in April.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Yeah, cool. Thank you. Thank you very much. Beautiful.
