- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to the Inside the Birds postgame show.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher. That's Adam Kaplan and man, are the
- 0:16Speaker 1: Eagles gonna make you sweat all year long? It's pretty obvious.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It's been seven weeks and not much has changed. However,
- 0:24Speaker 1: the big difference in Week seven against the Vikings, Adam,
- 0:26Speaker 1: they snapped their two game losing streak. They get a
- 0:30Speaker 1: win that they absolutely needed, twenty eight to twenty two.
- 0:34Speaker 1: They never trailed, and yet you never felt they had
- 0:37Speaker 1: the game in the bag until the last two possessions
- 0:40Speaker 1: of the game, which is kind of how it goes
- 0:42Speaker 1: for the Eagles this year. But Adam, I'll say two things.
- 0:45Speaker 1: We saw the triumphant return of two really important things
- 0:48Speaker 1: for the Eagles. One, a playmaking defense that causes takeaways
- 0:52Speaker 1: and turnovers. And two, a deep passing game where Jalen
- 0:56Speaker 1: hurt Is able to get the ball deep to receivers.
- 0:59Speaker 1: He was over there rowing guys. In the past, it
- 1:01Speaker 1: wasn't it wasn't connecting for a little bit. Well, those
- 1:03Speaker 1: were really important in the second half, and I think
- 1:06Speaker 1: if you took the two things were most responsible for
- 1:09Speaker 1: the Eagles win, it's those the interceptions and the late
- 1:13Speaker 1: passing game resiliency.
- 1:16Speaker 2: This team was mentally tough to p spiping shorthanded. They
- 1:19Speaker 2: lost a number of players in the game there. If
- 1:22Speaker 2: you thought they were a paper thin at edge, now
- 1:24Speaker 2: they've they're down to a thimble. I mean it is
- 1:28Speaker 2: they ended the game with three edge rushers. I mean
- 1:29Speaker 2: that's where they're at. The BG rumors, which are true,
- 1:33Speaker 2: by the way, for definitely true about him strongly considering
- 1:37Speaker 2: coming back, well we'll talk about that briefly later when
- 1:39Speaker 2: we can talk about the defense. But this was a
- 1:42Speaker 2: mentally tough deal here. It hurts Purchase keeps coming man,
- 1:45Speaker 2: he keeps throwing, He keeps throwing, and he was successful.
- 1:48Speaker 2: It's funny when I looked at the numbers, I thought
- 1:50Speaker 2: for sure he had more than twenty three attests, but
- 1:52Speaker 2: he didn't. It just he had a number of big
- 1:54Speaker 2: plays with those twenty three attempts. He he had a
- 1:57Speaker 2: perfect passer rating fifty eight point three. I know ESPN
- 2:01Speaker 2: created the QBR number their own rating because it's kind
- 2:05Speaker 2: of out day, the passer rating, but we all saw it.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Hurts was magnificent. And one of the things I noted here,
- 2:11Speaker 2: and we need to talk about this more as we
- 2:13Speaker 2: go along, because this has been a problem with these
- 2:14Speaker 2: receivers for four years. They don't come back to the
- 2:18Speaker 2: ball well enough. This is something we have not criticized
- 2:20Speaker 2: them enough for. It's not a Hurts issue, it's a
- 2:24Speaker 2: receiver's issue. When Hurts a scrambling come back to the football. Well.
- 2:27Speaker 2: They did a great job. Smitty did as well. Both
- 2:31Speaker 2: Smith and Brown combined for over three hundred yards three
- 2:34Speaker 2: or four to be exact. They both were magnificent. Smitty
- 2:37Speaker 2: was best games in Eagle. There's so much donepack on
- 2:41Speaker 2: offense and I we'll do the tape show with Greg,
- 2:43Speaker 2: but this is an impressive game. Consider again, Hurts only
- 2:46Speaker 2: throw the ball twenty three times, but as you said,
- 2:48Speaker 2: as you set it up, so many big plays.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think that was key because in the
- 2:53Speaker 1: first half he was something like nine of eleven. I mean,
- 2:57Speaker 1: the completion percentage was very high. But the only real
- 3:01Speaker 1: significant impact play was the touchdown to AJ Brown, which
- 3:05Speaker 1: was a good throw, but honestly, it was a little
- 3:07Speaker 1: backyard style he had. He had a lot of time
- 3:09Speaker 1: and he just needed hurt the Brown to get free there.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I thought the second half, the dime seventy eight yard
- 3:15Speaker 1: where he perfectly put it what only Vonta could catch
- 3:18Speaker 1: it and then continue to run for the touchdown. Obviously,
- 3:20Speaker 1: the close out forty five yard er to aj Brown
- 3:23Speaker 1: was good. The roll right to your point and hit
- 3:25Speaker 1: on third and long. I think he rolled right, bought
- 3:28Speaker 1: time and hit Davante Smith. It's Jekyll and Hyde. Every week.
- 3:32Speaker 1: We can pick apart the first half because offensively they
- 3:35Speaker 1: weren't good and they still can't run the ball. And
- 3:37Speaker 1: I didn't think Hert's first half was very good. I
- 3:39Speaker 1: thought he took bad sacks and again runs out of
- 3:42Speaker 1: bounds short of the sticks and takes a loss or
- 3:45Speaker 1: a neutral or a no gain instead of just throwing
- 3:47Speaker 1: the ball away. So I don't know what happened in
- 3:49Speaker 1: the first half there, but certainly the adjustments that we
- 3:52Speaker 1: haven't seen. When I say adjustments, I just mean getting
- 3:54Speaker 1: a feel for the game and playing better that we
- 3:57Speaker 1: weren't seeing in the second half lately saw and that
- 4:00Speaker 1: is good. I do think for this week, Adam, the
- 4:03Speaker 1: style points don't matter. You can't be three and three
- 4:06Speaker 1: after six going into the you know, or going into
- 4:08Speaker 1: the Giants game. I think the sky would have been
- 4:11Speaker 1: falling had they lost the game, it would have been
- 4:14Speaker 1: and justifiably so, there would have been a lot of
- 4:15Speaker 1: criticism and critique. So even though it was a typical
- 4:18Speaker 1: Eagles win in that it wasn't pretty and you never
- 4:21Speaker 1: felt it was in the bag, it was an important win.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I like how you said resilient win. I do think
- 4:27Speaker 1: that when I predicted the game, I said, I thought
- 4:30Speaker 1: the Eagles were gonna win twenty three to twenty in
- 4:32Speaker 1: an ugly game, and they were gonna win, but nobody
- 4:34Speaker 1: was gonna be.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Half like it.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And you know, I still think we're going to see
- 4:38Speaker 1: that a lot this week. I think people are not
- 4:39Speaker 1: going to be happy because this team is being held
- 4:42Speaker 1: to elite slash super Bowl. Look, that's what they're being
- 4:46Speaker 1: held to the standard, and they haven't looked at even
- 4:48Speaker 1: in their wins. But you know this more than anyone.
- 4:52Speaker 1: It was just so important to come out of this
- 4:53Speaker 1: game with a w.
- 4:54Speaker 2: So first half on your point, right, they this looked
- 4:58Speaker 2: like your typical Eagles offense right first self, they couldn't
- 5:01Speaker 2: run the football. To say it now that early on
- 5:02Speaker 2: they did first three or four runs and then it
- 5:04Speaker 2: just completely dissipated. Hurts was nine for eleven, but the
- 5:08Speaker 2: thirty seven yard obviously was It was just one of
- 5:12Speaker 2: those plays where, okay, is someone gonna get open, we
- 5:16Speaker 2: have to see what the tape looks like. So it
- 5:17Speaker 2: was an ugly first half all around, quite frankly. Second
- 5:20Speaker 2: half it was just bombs away some by the way,
- 5:24Speaker 2: some throws inside, which you like because through outside the numbers.
- 5:28Speaker 2: But Hurts had a huge second half, monster second half.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Everyone did at receiver and quarterback and the pass pro
- 5:35Speaker 2: once again as we could well. Obviously getting started in
- 5:37Speaker 2: an offense, the pass protection despite Jurgons leaving early and
- 5:43Speaker 2: Brett Toth replacing him, and he moved Dickerson over. I
- 5:45Speaker 2: know some people are wondering, but addiction just got over
- 5:47Speaker 2: the left ankle country. Despite that, they found a way
- 5:52Speaker 2: to hang in there and make And I'll give as
- 5:55Speaker 2: much as we've criticized kind of the philosophy of this
- 5:58Speaker 2: this team on offense, the fact that they brought back
- 6:01Speaker 2: the deep pass the game with Jurgon's not in there
- 6:03Speaker 2: and Toth's not very good, Hey give a too low credit.
- 6:07Speaker 2: And obviously Hurts for the execution att that was interesting.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Didn't expect that.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, So and there's another interesting side plot to how
- 6:15Speaker 1: well they threw the ball in the second half that
- 6:17Speaker 1: we're gonna have Greg Kosso really dive into on inside
- 6:20Speaker 1: the tape and it all relates to the injury that
- 6:23Speaker 1: forced Cam Jurgens out of the game. And curiously they
- 6:27Speaker 1: decide to put Brett Toth in at center and keep
- 6:30Speaker 1: landing Dickerson at left guard instead of moving Dickerson at
- 6:33Speaker 1: center and playing Tothe at left guard. I say curiously
- 6:37Speaker 1: because we all know through many years now Brett Toath
- 6:40Speaker 1: has trouble snapping in the shotgun and that's where he is.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And Adam I noticed that they went under center quite
- 6:48Speaker 1: a bit in the second half, and Hertz made some
- 6:51Speaker 1: throws from under center. I imagine they went under center
- 6:54Speaker 1: that bit because they were concerned about Brett Toath's ability
- 6:58Speaker 1: to snap from the shotgun. I honestly thought, especially the
- 7:01Speaker 1: way the third quarter started, that this was going to
- 7:03Speaker 1: be devastating. I thought the Eagles were going to be
- 7:05Speaker 1: done having to operate from under center because the third
- 7:09Speaker 1: quarter did not start off well. They had a couple
- 7:11Speaker 1: of stuff runs and then they were putting the ball
- 7:13Speaker 1: away three and ounce, but then they it came alive.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Now some of the plays he made in the second
- 7:18Speaker 1: half were out of shotgun, so the snap was good,
- 7:21Speaker 1: but the fact that they were able to go under
- 7:23Speaker 1: center might be a positive development there. Who knows, but
- 7:26Speaker 1: I thought that that was pretty interesting. It was it
- 7:28Speaker 1: was a true compensation for a real bad injury. Meaning
- 7:33Speaker 1: I don't know how bad Jurggins his back is. I'm
- 7:35Speaker 1: just saying it's bad to lose him. Yeah, I'm sorry
- 7:38Speaker 1: his knee when everybody else is hurt on that O line.
- 7:40Speaker 1: But for the position they were put in, to use
- 7:43Speaker 1: your word again, that was really resilient showing.
- 7:46Speaker 2: It was it hurts as one of these guys. It
- 7:48Speaker 2: could look really ugly and then you go, wow, Okay,
- 7:52Speaker 2: this is one of those wow second halfs. I mean,
- 7:54Speaker 2: this is one of the best second afs he's had
- 7:56Speaker 2: in a long time. And Butts at least, let's put
- 7:59Speaker 2: it this way. The first half was dreadful pass the
- 8:02Speaker 2: game wise, for save one play, but he's still accurate.
- 8:06Speaker 2: At least he's getting rid of the football. But the
- 8:08Speaker 2: difference is with him this year. And plus he's not
- 8:10Speaker 2: running the ball well, he's not bailing to look to run,
- 8:14Speaker 2: he's bailing or he's moving sometimes to create a passing
- 8:18Speaker 2: lane to throw the football. That's a that's a good sign,
- 8:20Speaker 2: that's a positive sign. I'm sure he'll break himself down
- 8:23Speaker 2: sometimes where he moves when he shouldn't. That's that's just hurt.
- 8:27Speaker 2: But who hurts has been over his career. But this
- 8:30Speaker 2: game in the second half hung in there. It didn't move, delivered,
- 8:34Speaker 2: and that past to Smith is one of the best
- 8:36Speaker 2: deepalls of his career. Quite frankly, he's thrown and Smitty
- 8:40Speaker 2: is I mean, what did this dude? I because I
- 8:44Speaker 2: know they're a low passing volume teams, so we'll see
- 8:47Speaker 2: what Smith's numbers look at come for the Pro Ball voting.
- 8:50Speaker 2: But this guy's a phenomenal football player. He's so unique,
- 8:53Speaker 2: he's incredible.
- 8:54Speaker 1: And I will tell you I thought my favorite I loved.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I thought the pastor DeVante Smith. To me, that represented
- 9:01Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts getting back to what he does best. You know,
- 9:03Speaker 1: we're not surprised when he throws a touchdown like that,
- 9:07Speaker 1: because that is his strength. But I thought the touchdown
- 9:10Speaker 1: to AJ Brown in the third quarter was his best
- 9:14Speaker 1: pass because that was a threading of two defenders and
- 9:18Speaker 1: he put it. You saw aj kind of reached up
- 9:20Speaker 1: and then had the momentum going to get by the
- 9:23Speaker 1: two guys and get into the end zone. But that
- 9:26Speaker 1: is not only a throw that Jalen doesn't always make,
- 9:28Speaker 1: but as of recently, when he even in the first half,
- 9:31Speaker 1: when he seemed very reluctant to pull the trigger on
- 9:34Speaker 1: certain passes, that was just to let it rip type
- 9:37Speaker 1: of pass. And when Jalen Hurts gets into these let
- 9:40Speaker 1: it rip moments that we want more from him because
- 9:43Speaker 1: we know he has the ability to let it rip
- 9:45Speaker 1: and just doesn't want to or trust it or feel
- 9:47Speaker 1: like it's necessary at the times. But this time it
- 9:50Speaker 1: was necessary. They needed that and that was an excellent
- 9:53Speaker 1: throw to Aj Brown for the touch. I'm sure had
- 9:56Speaker 1: to be happy, right for all the on off the
- 9:58Speaker 1: field that had been really good for it.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And by the way, don't forget about the Brown sideline pass,
- 10:03Speaker 2: which is a huge third down a long I forget
- 10:05Speaker 2: what the artiste was, but that was a huge play. Yes,
- 10:08Speaker 2: he came back to the he came back to the ball.
- 10:09Speaker 2: That was a huge catch that that kept the momentum going.
- 10:14Speaker 1: So, I mean, there are certainly things that didn't look
- 10:18Speaker 1: great offensively and I don't know if the Eagles can
- 10:23Speaker 1: be the Eagles this year, meaning make a deep Super
- 10:26Speaker 1: Bowl run and win a Super Bowl again without a
- 10:28Speaker 1: run game. I don't know if they can do it.
- 10:31Speaker 1: They're trying, tough, and I don't you know, they are trying, right,
- 10:34Speaker 1: They're trying. They're five and two, is it now, right?
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah, they're five and two. They broke the two game
- 10:40Speaker 2: losing streak there right there, But there.
- 10:44Speaker 1: It feels like it feels like it's an uphill battle
- 10:48Speaker 1: week after week to get to where they want to
- 10:50Speaker 1: go because they don't have a running game. But they're
- 10:53Speaker 1: five and two, and so it's really big that they
- 10:56Speaker 1: come back and be the Giants next week. We'll get
- 10:58Speaker 1: into that later in the week because then you can
- 11:00Speaker 1: go into the bio six and two and try to
- 11:02Speaker 1: really self scout and figure out what you can do
- 11:05Speaker 1: to have a better run game. I know, you know,
- 11:08Speaker 1: we all know that the injuries are hurting the Eagles
- 11:11Speaker 1: on the offensive line, But I think they're still a
- 11:14Speaker 1: little bit too talented to just have no run game
- 11:16Speaker 1: the way they've basically had it. I hear you.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And the hope is that they get to the bye week,
- 11:22Speaker 2: get these guys off their feet, dragons who knows now
- 11:25Speaker 2: who'll obviously have testing tomorrow. Hopefully won't be bad, but
- 11:29Speaker 2: they'll see. And obviously if he's out for a while
- 11:31Speaker 2: or out at all, you have a massive problem. They
- 11:34Speaker 2: have a massive problem. I mean and Dickerson, who knows.
- 11:36Speaker 2: We'll see how he comes out with from the left ankle,
- 11:39Speaker 2: Andrew will see if hopefully he didn't re injure it,
- 11:42Speaker 2: and we'll see how they listen him on Wednesday. They
- 11:46Speaker 2: have to go sign a veteran lineman, interior linement. They
- 11:48Speaker 2: have to do this. This is how he's got a
- 11:50Speaker 2: major checklist, through the trade deadline, through depth. They're definitely
- 11:55Speaker 2: offensive lines, really poor. It's the first time and I
- 11:58Speaker 2: don't know how long they're definitely offensive line. It's just
- 12:00Speaker 2: not good enough. It's a problem. And the fact that
- 12:04Speaker 2: Matt Prior cannot play left guard or they clearly don't
- 12:06Speaker 2: want to play him there, or remember he got late,
- 12:08Speaker 2: he got reps late in training camp. You just he's
- 12:10Speaker 2: comfortable on the right side. So they've got a problem.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Hey, you know that one guy in the group chat
- 12:15Speaker 3: who hit a five leg parlay week one, and he
- 12:18Speaker 3: wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of the season.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Sounds like kaplan, right, yeah, yeah, it could be him,
- 12:23Speaker 3: It could be you, and we would all want to
- 12:27Speaker 3: be you.

- 14:21Speaker 1: code birds for a risk free first stake. I will
- 14:25Speaker 1: credit the Eagles offensive staff for this in that they
- 14:29Speaker 1: are trying different things. We've criticized them a little bit
- 14:32Speaker 1: for saying it's not just gonna happen by itself. You
- 14:34Speaker 1: have to do something different. Okay, So they put an
- 14:36Speaker 1: extra offensive tackle from the field Fred Johnson, right. They
- 14:41Speaker 1: did try a zone read, meaning where it hurts keeps
- 14:45Speaker 1: the ball. It didn't work, Okay, that it's not there.
- 14:48Speaker 1: They tried something different and they deactivated AJ Dillon to
- 14:54Speaker 1: make tank Bigsby active, and they did give Bigsby two carries.
- 14:57Speaker 1: He had an eleven yard run. Then he hadn't even
- 14:59Speaker 1: better run that was negated by I believe a Jordan
- 15:02Speaker 1: my Latta hold. So they had they had will Shipley
- 15:05Speaker 1: in there, who had some really nice blitz pickups at
- 15:09Speaker 1: the end in the two minutes drill at the end
- 15:11Speaker 1: of the first half. Because as we saw Sike one,
- 15:13Speaker 1: Barkley still struggles in that element. So they have tried
- 15:16Speaker 1: with this running back room and with Jalen Hurts to
- 15:19Speaker 1: do some things differently to spring the offense in the
- 15:22Speaker 1: run game, but not Everything's a lot of things just
- 15:24Speaker 1: aren't working there.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's just a situation where running inside is almost feudile.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Not always, but it's almost futile. You're gonna get stuffed.
- 15:35Speaker 2: You saw the couple bad ones where he got stuffed Barkley. Yeah,
- 15:39Speaker 2: by the way, he got cleared as you saw, they
- 15:41Speaker 2: were checking his shoulder, but he wound up getting actually
- 15:44Speaker 2: a concussion check and he cleared. Yep. So we'll see Jurgens, well,
- 15:49Speaker 2: we'll get the the defensive injuries too. But Jurgons with
- 15:51Speaker 2: the KNAE was rolled out Barkley Chef for a concussion.
- 15:54Speaker 2: He was cleared. We'll do defensive injuries when we get
- 15:57Speaker 2: the defense. But I just would hope that Petullo learn
- 16:01Speaker 2: in this game that you've got to figure out a
- 16:04Speaker 2: way to get these guys open and be aggressive. And
- 16:08Speaker 2: we talked about in the pregame show. Folks didn't hear it,
- 16:10Speaker 2: but Greg Greg brought it up, and I backed him
- 16:12Speaker 2: because I know that for a fact. But Greg brought
- 16:14Speaker 2: up first, the Vikings are very average corner. Rogers has
- 16:17Speaker 2: been a splash play corner this season, no doubt. He's
- 16:20Speaker 2: a okay number two corner. Byron Murphy had your brothers
- 16:24Speaker 2: would be a slot corner or number two corner. They
- 16:27Speaker 2: don't have a number one corner. They haven't had one
- 16:29Speaker 2: in a number of years. And Eagles knew this coming
- 16:32Speaker 2: in and Greg said it first, said they've got to
- 16:35Speaker 2: go deep to a J. Brown. They did. Who knew
- 16:37Speaker 2: Smitty would be the other guy who's going to be
- 16:39Speaker 2: massively deep, massively used deep. But the Eagles, the tape
- 16:44Speaker 2: shows it, these guys can be beat and they were.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and Mattellis is like a nice movable piece type players,
- 16:50Speaker 1: but not necessarily the guy you want in my corner.
- 16:53Speaker 1: He's aj Brown fifteen twenty yards down the field, right.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Yeah, Mittel's is not a corner. He's a safety who
- 16:59Speaker 2: is kind of used like a little bit for matchup purposes.
- 17:01Speaker 2: But he's a Brian Floris creation in terms of versatility.
- 17:07Speaker 2: But the tape show that that they had advantages here
- 17:10Speaker 2: and first half. At the end of it, I was like, man,
- 17:13Speaker 2: not another one of these awful pass games, and they
- 17:16Speaker 2: took their shots protection. You know, it's funny. For all
- 17:19Speaker 2: we beat them up with the run blocking, their pass
- 17:21Speaker 2: protection again mostly really good.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It was mostly mostly, And honestly, you know, some of
- 17:28Speaker 1: that is because defenses rush jail and Hurts differently. They
- 17:32Speaker 1: know they can't go full throttle. They have to kind
- 17:34Speaker 1: of surround him in the pocket, which I think they've
- 17:37Speaker 1: done a nice job. So that does help the old
- 17:38Speaker 1: line a little bit and it gives jail and Hurts time.
- 17:41Speaker 1: But for all the injuries that they've had, I do
- 17:44Speaker 1: think that the pass protection has been pretty good. And
- 17:46Speaker 1: there were times in the first half where it was
- 17:48Speaker 1: just like, come on, you got to do something. You're
- 17:50Speaker 1: just I mean, he had enough time in the pocket
- 17:52Speaker 1: on that Aj Brown touched or pass against Mattella's to like,
- 17:56Speaker 1: you know, make a Pbnjay sandwich, so that that he's
- 18:01Speaker 1: got that time. So it was good to see in
- 18:03Speaker 1: the second half he capitalized on it. I will I
- 18:06Speaker 1: will make this joke. How many of the Eagles first
- 18:08Speaker 1: three or four draft picks in two thousand and twenty
- 18:12Speaker 1: seven are are they using on guards and tackles? Probably
- 18:14Speaker 1: a lot right six? Yeah, yeah, yeah, guards and tackles.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Oh my god, dude, I would And it's funny because
- 18:22Speaker 2: the kid Keaton is healthy enacted with Cowboys, the Cowboys, Yeah, Keenan,
- 18:27Speaker 2: excuse me, Keenan. Trevor Keegan, Yeah, missing on him. They
- 18:31Speaker 2: just don't have that the actorsus goal guy who could
- 18:33Speaker 2: plug out, like, hey, you need to play right guard.
- 18:35Speaker 2: He's in left guard, he's in right tackle, he's in
- 18:38Speaker 2: They don't have that guy right and that's it's clearly
- 18:40Speaker 2: an issue.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Yep. They'll be drafting there as they always do, but
- 18:44Speaker 1: even more so. All right, so that is a look
- 18:46Speaker 1: at the offense. Hey, let's fold this into the offense
- 18:48Speaker 1: because it's special teams, but it's more offense related than defense.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Once again, you get two I mean they're inventing away
- 18:57Speaker 1: each week to be disappointing on special teams. It used
- 19:00Speaker 1: to be the botching and the muffing of the returns,
- 19:03Speaker 1: and now it's an illegal formation and an illegal double
- 19:07Speaker 1: team on back to back kickoff returns in the second
- 19:10Speaker 1: half that staked them inside their own twenty. Now. Fortunately
- 19:14Speaker 1: on the second one they got the long touchdown of
- 19:16Speaker 1: Devonte Smith, but on the first one they were stake
- 19:19Speaker 1: deep and had to punt it after a few plays.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I've never even heard of an illegal double team penalty
- 19:24Speaker 1: on a kickoff return, but they keep inventing ways to
- 19:28Speaker 1: really hurt themselves on special teams. They got to figure
- 19:30Speaker 1: that out.
- 19:31Speaker 2: They did, and they again led the game in penalties
- 19:34Speaker 2: with eight for sixty four. This accepted penalty sixty four yards.
- 19:37Speaker 2: By the way, claim game for hurts and the offense
- 19:40Speaker 2: no turnovers. You did want to mention that he just
- 19:43Speaker 2: rarely turns it over. He's he's had it to be
- 19:47Speaker 2: one of the league leaders in fewest turnovers. I mean,
- 19:48Speaker 2: this is how you win. I know, people know the
- 19:51Speaker 2: stat like when Hurtz throws front of like twenty five attemps.
- 19:54Speaker 2: They almost went almost every game mm hmm. Yeah, he
- 19:57Speaker 2: had three touchdowns monster second half. But getting to the
- 20:00Speaker 2: special Sam Jake Elliott's kick, it's only his first miskick
- 20:06Speaker 2: of the season. He hasn't attempt a lot of field goals,
- 20:08Speaker 2: but I thought automatic Jake was back. We'll have to
- 20:10Speaker 2: take a look at that one. We don't really talk
- 20:12Speaker 2: about social teams much. I was wondering whether it was
- 20:16Speaker 2: the hold or not, but yeah, he pushed it.
- 20:18Speaker 1: I was wondering if because the Vikings were almost late
- 20:21Speaker 1: getting two guys onto the field, they were running in
- 20:24Speaker 1: at the last second. I just wonder in some way
- 20:27Speaker 1: if that messed up the operation, like in the periphery
- 20:30Speaker 1: of either the snapper, the holder of anything. They're just
- 20:33Speaker 1: seeing these two guys running off writers are about to
- 20:36Speaker 1: snap the ball. I'm not saying that's an excuse. I'm
- 20:38Speaker 1: just wondering if that at all played into it. But
- 20:41Speaker 1: you're right, I mean, they got to make sure that
- 20:42Speaker 1: they look at that on tape and figure it out,
- 20:44Speaker 1: and Michael Klay has got to just you'd love to
- 20:47Speaker 1: see one game. We're gonna be a week eight next
- 20:49Speaker 1: that it can be halfway through the season. Basically when
- 20:53Speaker 1: next week's game is over. Can we get one Eagles
- 20:56Speaker 1: game where they don't do something wrong on special teams?
- 21:00Speaker 1: I mean, they had all these great field goal blocks
- 21:02Speaker 1: and punts in the first yea four or five weeks,
- 21:04Speaker 1: and then ever since it's just been like muff and
- 21:06Speaker 1: botch and penalty and now miss field goal. So they
- 21:09Speaker 1: got to get that stuff straightened out. In close games
- 21:11Speaker 1: that will kill you.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and at least City Brown didn't have a personal foul.
- 21:16Speaker 2: That's that's a plus.
- 21:17Speaker 1: No, that's very good.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I had mention that. Good.
- 21:20Speaker 1: All right, as we transition to defense, I want to
- 21:22Speaker 1: bring up this.
- 21:22Speaker 2: One real quick, real quick. I forgot to mention this.
- 21:26Speaker 2: He actually had a beautiful thirty seven yard er adri
- 21:28Speaker 2: Gibson did. He had five returns. In fact, they had
- 21:30Speaker 2: seven returns. Gibson had the thirty seven yarder. She played
- 21:33Speaker 2: a thirty three order. So actually they improved. But you
- 21:36Speaker 2: mentioned these weird penalties. Can't have that go ahead.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Nope, that was a good point. As we transition to defense.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Just an unbelievable stat The Eagles are now, as we mentioned,
- 21:48Speaker 1: five and two, they played seven games. They're five and two.
- 21:50Speaker 1: They're one of the better teams in the NFL by
- 21:53Speaker 1: a record three and one.
- 21:54Speaker 2: On the road.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Good three and one on the road. Do you know
- 21:57Speaker 1: that they have been out gained in totally larger in
- 22:00Speaker 1: every single game.
- 22:02Speaker 2: They now remember there's always there's Roy's contexts. How were
- 22:05Speaker 2: they did they have a big lead, they have team
- 22:07Speaker 2: have to throw to come back this way?
- 22:09Speaker 1: Yeah, but you've watched every Eagles game.
- 22:10Speaker 2: You know that they're there, low and pass team. That's
- 22:13Speaker 2: just the way it is.
- 22:13Speaker 1: No, I didn't say pass, I mean just total yards though,
- 22:16Speaker 1: I mean now, but.
- 22:16Speaker 2: I'm just saying for total yards. Yeah. Yet, but yet
- 22:19Speaker 2: this game I have to look like another under two
- 22:21Speaker 2: hundred yard pass game for hurts in the offense second
- 22:24Speaker 2: half went crazy, but they can't run the ball. That's
- 22:26Speaker 2: why they can't out.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Get anyone, right, And then it looked like the defense.
- 22:29Speaker 1: You know they get the two takeaways. They actually played
- 22:31Speaker 1: really good run defense. Right, so you think the Vikings
- 22:34Speaker 1: aren't moving the ball, Well, the Vikings were seven to
- 22:37Speaker 1: fifteen on third down that's forty seven percent. That was
- 22:39Speaker 1: way better than the Eagles. And they had three hundred
- 22:41Speaker 1: and eighty seven yards of offense, more than the Eagles
- 22:44Speaker 1: three sixty one. I wouldn't have thought that until I
- 22:48Speaker 1: looked at the box score at the end of the game,
- 22:49Speaker 1: because they really struggled in the red zone, and that's
- 22:51Speaker 1: really where the Eagles won.
- 22:52Speaker 2: They stopped them a couple. First of all, went to
- 22:55Speaker 2: a two picks right. The first one, you understand, Carter,
- 22:58Speaker 2: what a what an unbelievable rush? Might I slowed that
- 23:01Speaker 2: down on a virus and FiOS if you folks you
- 23:03Speaker 2: have for folks who have fires. You may not know this,
- 23:06Speaker 2: but you have the slow otion capability, hit pause, hit
- 23:10Speaker 2: hit the right the right button for the fast forward,
- 23:13Speaker 2: and that makes it slow. I just was blown away
- 23:17Speaker 2: the what he did there. He just was incredible. And
- 23:19Speaker 2: he tattooed once. You once had the bad left shoulder.
- 23:22Speaker 2: You saw him massaging at a bunch the rest of
- 23:24Speaker 2: the game. Yep. Once had to put the ball of
- 23:26Speaker 2: forty two times to get over three hundred yards. In fact,
- 23:28Speaker 2: Hertz actually out gained him three twenty six to three thirteen,
- 23:32Speaker 2: and one said Once had nineteen more attempts. He got
- 23:35Speaker 2: obviously a lot of it in the second hand. But
- 23:37Speaker 2: the second interception was vintage bad Once. What a terrible decision.
- 23:41Speaker 2: What are you doing? Why would you make that throat.
- 23:44Speaker 2: There's no excuse for making that throat so stupid.
- 23:46Speaker 1: That was like, you know, any Eagles fan just basically
- 23:49Speaker 1: had a flashback. Carston went from twenty eighteen, nineteen or twenty, Well, no,
- 23:55Speaker 1: in that Eagles jersey, right, I mean twenty oh twenty definitely, yeah, yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Nineteen was not great for the first until the last
- 24:02Speaker 1: three games of the year that he won, but he
- 24:04Speaker 1: was pretty pedestrians his.
- 24:06Speaker 2: Downfall in eighteen the other back fractures, so he was
- 24:09Speaker 2: very accurate. It was mostly short intermediate. Twenty nineteen was
- 24:13Speaker 2: his downfall of Eagles. This is anyone who works for
- 24:15Speaker 2: Eagles knew this. Then it was disaster. It started falling off,
- 24:18Speaker 2: and then it this idea like what's that?
- 24:22Speaker 1: Then the damn broke in twenty two exactly.
- 24:24Speaker 2: And the thing with Hertz would excuse me with once
- 24:27Speaker 2: would bother me is no one in the right mind
- 24:30Speaker 2: would try that. He had no chick Like we all
- 24:32Speaker 2: at home. There's no one open you you like you
- 24:35Speaker 2: see so maybe, but dude, when you're waiting so long
- 24:38Speaker 2: to throw it, don't the other guy is going to
- 24:40Speaker 2: come over. What are you doing? He's just it's just
- 24:42Speaker 2: stupid football. Yeah, I give him credit for like in fact,
- 24:46Speaker 2: he did similar things in the Pittsburgh game where he
- 24:48Speaker 2: turned it over twice. He brought them back mm hmm,
- 24:51Speaker 2: and but he still two picks of that game. Now,
- 24:53Speaker 2: they had dropped passes in the Pittsburgh game, but fast
- 24:55Speaker 2: forward to this one. I give the defense credit. They're
- 24:58Speaker 2: so shorthanded. So now well let's get to those defensive injuries.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Ojomoways click checked for concussion. Ty Robinson replaced him. I
- 25:06Speaker 2: don't know that they never said whether he's clear to
- 25:09Speaker 2: come back, but Ty Robinson came in. He's number ninety five.
- 25:12Speaker 2: Ojelari left didn't come back because he had concussion, wasn't cleared.
- 25:15Speaker 2: So the end of the game with hunt Oush of
- 25:17Speaker 2: the sack and Patrick Johnson, that's not what Patrick Johnson's
- 25:20Speaker 2: a fifth at rusher. He's really a good special teamer,
- 25:23Speaker 2: but he's got to play defense season because they've run
- 25:25Speaker 2: out of players. Triro the ankle did not return, Droy
- 25:28Speaker 2: Jackson with concussion offic so you cannot come back. And
- 25:30Speaker 2: I mentioned Mechi was active but did not play. That
- 25:33Speaker 2: was approaching decision.
- 25:34Speaker 1: So I tried to get an idea of how many snaps.
- 25:37Speaker 1: We finally saw on Ni Kobe Dean play on defense. Yeah,
- 25:39Speaker 1: first time. It was hard. It's hard to tell until
- 25:43Speaker 1: you've watched him how many snaps or you get the
- 25:44Speaker 1: snap counts. But he did have six tackles and then
- 25:48Speaker 1: he did when he came on the field, Campbell would
- 25:51Speaker 1: move to the edges because the Eagles are so thin
- 25:53Speaker 1: at the edges. Now. I wonder though, if Brandon Graham,
- 25:57Speaker 1: when Brandon Graham comes out of retirement and suits up
- 25:59Speaker 1: for the Eagles, and we'll see, I mean, he's probably
- 26:02Speaker 1: not going to play in the first game or anything
- 26:03Speaker 1: that he says it.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Like he'sn't played football or been with it practice nine
- 26:09Speaker 2: months like you have to.
- 26:11Speaker 1: And the trip you retorted the super Bowl. Remember he's
- 26:14Speaker 1: coming off that too.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. No, that's that's the thing that he had. Listen,
- 26:18Speaker 2: he had a surgery, right, we know he's been working
- 26:21Speaker 2: out like crazy. Everything. Everyone I've talked to seen him
- 26:24Speaker 2: says he looks good. But uh, I have no idea
- 26:27Speaker 2: what to expect. And by the way, this will not
- 26:29Speaker 2: affect their plans for for the for trade deadline. If
- 26:32Speaker 2: they find an edge they can get to deal with
- 26:33Speaker 2: they get, they get a deal to who the hell
- 26:35Speaker 2: knows what he's be We love BG, it's he's unbelievable,
- 26:38Speaker 2: but who knows what he could possibly do at this point?
- 26:42Speaker 1: I don't right right knowing, knowing Vic, IFG looks good
- 26:47Speaker 1: in the first week of practice, he plays like fifty eight,
- 26:51Speaker 1: Oh he played Darry Smith? Did he play in the
- 26:53Speaker 1: first one?
- 26:55Speaker 2: That was crazy him a lot?
- 26:56Speaker 1: Exactly?
- 26:56Speaker 2: Good point. Yeah, you're right at this point. And I
- 27:01Speaker 2: kind of for a question though, what they are I've
- 27:03Speaker 2: never seen them in the eight years of our show
- 27:05Speaker 2: this than at Edge. This is insane.
- 27:07Speaker 1: Yeah, well, when Beg does play, then Nolan's I assume
- 27:11Speaker 1: back then you'll maybe probably have Nolan Smith back, and
- 27:15Speaker 1: then then you might not need to had Campbell playing
- 27:18Speaker 1: as many Edge reps. I mean, who knows. And then
- 27:21Speaker 1: you wonder, well, how do you then get Nikobe Dean
- 27:24Speaker 1: back on the field if you're not moving Campbell to
- 27:26Speaker 1: the edge. That's all stuff that they're gonna have to
- 27:28Speaker 1: figure out. That'll be you know, three to four to
- 27:30Speaker 1: five weeks in advance. It's just an interesting conversation to
- 27:33Speaker 1: see how it all works out. And it's good. It's
- 27:35Speaker 1: good that Vic has optionality, and it was nice to
- 27:37Speaker 1: see Nikobe Dean get in there and make some tackles
- 27:41Speaker 1: and be a part of the defense again.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt you saw Dean on bass downs. Two
- 27:48Speaker 2: saw Coop by the way playing corner on bass downs.
- 27:51Speaker 2: I give them credit. I know they had some problems
- 27:52Speaker 2: against Addison, who's a different type of route runner and
- 27:55Speaker 2: player than Justin Jefferson. They held their own against Justin Jefferson.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I thought they did a great job.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Yep.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Considering the Deroy Jackson left, Rex gave up some plays.
- 28:05Speaker 2: But the thing for him is just don't get beat deep.
- 28:07Speaker 2: He's a fourth corner. He'll never be any better than that.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Just don't kill the team by getting beat deep. And
- 28:11Speaker 2: he didn't. That. That's all you could hope for with
- 28:14Speaker 2: him in the game. But the bottom line is they
- 28:17Speaker 2: found a way to win. It look hary somehow they
- 28:22Speaker 2: never trailed. I just find it incredible. They got out
- 28:26Speaker 2: ball possessed by like nine minutes.
- 28:28Speaker 1: Yep.
- 28:29Speaker 2: They just found a way to win. And they're so
- 28:31Speaker 2: mentally tough.
- 28:32Speaker 4: Man.
- 28:32Speaker 2: This is a game where you go, man, here we
- 28:35Speaker 2: go again. Are they gonna pull phillies here?
- 28:37Speaker 1: Not hit right by the way justin Jefferson, man, he
- 28:41Speaker 1: must he's like haunted by the Eagles because this is
- 28:44Speaker 1: like the second consecutive game right right where if you
- 28:49Speaker 1: remember a couple of years ago they played in that
- 28:51Speaker 1: Sunday night game I think it was, and he was
- 28:53Speaker 1: trying to score a touchdown stretch out over the goal
- 28:56Speaker 1: and he lost handle of the ball and instead of
- 28:57Speaker 1: getting a touchdown, which would have been easy for him
- 29:00Speaker 1: and the team, it wound up coming back to the
- 29:03Speaker 1: Eagles on a touchback. And then in this game, I mean,
- 29:05Speaker 1: he has a touchdown catch. He makes that back shoulder
- 29:09Speaker 1: one to eighty degree turn like in his sleep, and
- 29:12Speaker 1: for whatever reason, he completes like seventy five percent of it.
- 29:15Speaker 1: He catches the ball, he's coming, you know, he's doing
- 29:18Speaker 1: the turn and then he just and then the ball
- 29:20Speaker 1: comes out of his hands and then.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Don't forget Howkinson. I mean, a good job on Mike Pereira.
- 29:27Speaker 2: He nailed a great guy, by the way. He's yeah's
- 29:29Speaker 2: the greatest. He actually did our show with him five
- 29:32Speaker 2: years ago to Super Bowl.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right now, team.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Right, So what it was, it was, no, it was
- 29:38Speaker 2: actually after the Seattle game when the cheap shot from.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Uh you caught up with him? Yeah? From when from Clowney.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Good good call against see it when he was with Seattle,
- 29:47Speaker 2: I said that he absolutely agree that they rest messd.
- 29:50Speaker 2: He said that was actually a cheap shot. Mike. Great,
- 29:52Speaker 2: He got out of his own skin and said that
- 29:53Speaker 2: you told the truth.
- 29:54Speaker 1: But Hockinson dropped to me, yes, if he makes that catch,
- 30:01Speaker 1: we might be talking about a totally different alcol Sure,
- 30:03Speaker 1: it's a backbreaker. Him not capting that ball, which he
- 30:06Speaker 1: probably again catches nine times out of ten, was huge
- 30:09Speaker 1: for the Eagles.
- 30:10Speaker 2: But getting Carter back he was monstrous that that. The
- 30:14Speaker 2: the the hit on Wentz was huge, made a bline form,
- 30:19Speaker 2: absolutely flatten him like a pancake.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Yep. The Moro Jomo third down sacks so.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Funny because I was texted the front of mine, I'm like,
- 30:26Speaker 2: is o Joe, is he going to show that he
- 30:29Speaker 2: could rush the passer? These quarteraby pressure some tims could
- 30:31Speaker 2: be misleading stat Literally right after that, my my buddy
- 30:34Speaker 2: starts laughing. He goes, dude, you have to reverse jinx
- 30:37Speaker 2: him again. Like literally within thirty seconds, he had the sack.
- 30:41Speaker 2: Great sack. And when Cuba had that awful attempt on
- 30:44Speaker 2: that tackle. You got to make the tackle. Yep, that
- 30:47Speaker 2: that that can't happen. We had a huge passes pass defense.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Dejeane had a big one for big would have been
- 30:53Speaker 2: a big play. They're opportunistic, they got great resiliency. They're
- 30:57Speaker 2: very shorthanded. We have no idea who's going to be
- 31:00Speaker 2: available next week. They're so thin. But now as we
- 31:03Speaker 2: speak here, somehow and I don't know how, the Giants
- 31:07Speaker 2: are up big against the Broncos. Oh my goodness, that
- 31:10Speaker 2: is crazy.

- 33:56Speaker 1: down and made a really big run stop though even
- 33:59Speaker 1: though he did a week before I get trucked by someone,
- 34:03Speaker 1: But yeah, I feel like he's been struggling in coverage
- 34:05Speaker 1: a little bit or open field tackling. But if you

- 35:41Speaker 1: us for a chalk talk on Patreon. So I'll put
- 35:43Speaker 1: a little snippet of that out for the mainstream, But
- 35:46Speaker 1: I mean, he gave us an hour and that was
- 35:48Speaker 1: really nice to really go in depth. As we do
- 35:51Speaker 1: on chalk talk. We try to bring everybody behind the
- 35:53Speaker 1: scenes of what goes on in an NFL franchise, and
- 35:56Speaker 1: he talked about the very thankless position of being an
- 35:59Speaker 1: advanced scout, a pro scout for an NFL team, and
- 36:02Speaker 1: what it's like, and how to do a scouting report
- 36:05Speaker 1: and what to look for and how important advanced scouting
- 36:08Speaker 1: is in the process. It's not really discussed a lot,
- 36:12Speaker 1: so really really great stuff from Dan Hattman there and

- 36:37Speaker 1: forget that, I forget his name, and I just wanted
- 36:39Speaker 1: to thank mister Lodenthal. Will call him. Thank you very
- 36:42Speaker 1: much for being a listener. They're both doing great. Yeah,
- 36:45Speaker 1: go Raider. That's gonna do it for this episode of
