Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to the Western show. You continue to talk like you're
- 0:05talking right now. You'll be history on this
- 0:07program. Cooler show.
- 0:12Nobody eats beefaroni on a boatman.
- 0:14That's. A problem Yokozuna blew my.
- 0:24Mind. Welcome back to the Extra Cooler
- 0:50show. My name is not Nick, not
- 0:52otherwise known as Extra Cooler. But I am here and I promise you
- 0:56this is not an extra credit episode.
- 0:58I am not here solo for long. We will get into episode 190 for
- 1:04SummerSlam 1990 Part 2. I assure you that.
- 1:08But we had so much fun recording these episodes, all four of us
- 1:12for SummerSlam here and we are excited for you to listen.
- 1:16But since we recorded this episode, we got the news of the
- 1:19passing of the professional wrestler and pop culture icon
- 1:23Hulk Hogan. Hulk Hogan, Terry Bollea died on
- 1:26July 24th, 2025 at the age of 71 years old.
- 1:30Thinking about 71 for a 1980s wrestler that went up and down
- 1:34those roads, did all those tough things to their body.
- 1:39I'll let you take liberty with where and how you want to take
- 1:42that. But yeah, it it's pretty cool to
- 1:45see a wrestler from the 80s live to be 71.
- 1:48I know that's really young in 2025, but it's still pretty cool
- 1:53to see, you know, Hogan be in our lives for that long.
- 1:57I'm sure by now you've heard many people try their best to
- 2:00pay tribute or take potshots at Hulk Hogan or Terry Bollea, and
- 2:04I'm going to try my best to do that before we get into the
- 2:07episode. The phrase I've heard the most
- 2:10when talking about the Hulkster has been it's complicated.
- 2:13And I actually use that, too, when a neighbor of mine texted
- 2:17her condolences to me about Hogan and she's not a wrestling
- 2:21fan. But I said, you know, it's, it's
- 2:23complicated with the Hulkster. And I kind of left it at that
- 2:26because it truly is it, it's hard to put into words my
- 2:30feelings about Hulk Hogan. You know, the relationship we
- 2:33have with Hulk and with Terry are truly a definition of
- 2:38dichotomy. You know, pretty wild that he
- 2:41died 10 years to the day after the release of the Gawker tape,
- 2:45July 24th, 2015, and really put a true spotlight on what created
- 2:51that dichotomy with Hogan or Hulkster and Terry the man.
- 2:56You know, there were definitely some awful things that came
- 2:59about with Terry Bollea. And it's definitely important to
- 3:02the conversation, but you tune into the Extra cooler show to
- 3:06enjoy some, you know, fun pro wrestling nostalgia at its best.
- 3:11And that's the path I kind of want to take when talking about
- 3:14the Hulkster. So no more Terry for now.
- 3:17But you know, as a wrestling fan, you, you know, something is
- 3:21big when you get texts and calls from non wrestling people.
- 3:25And this is exactly that. You know, my brother-in-law was
- 3:28actually the first one to call me.
- 3:29And it's not often that I get a call from from him.
- 3:32It's usually just a text of him trying to sell me on some really
- 3:36bogus fantasy football trade. So I was really thrown off when
- 3:40the phone rang. I didn't know what I was going
- 3:41to get when I picked up the other other side.
- 3:43And all I get was his voice going the holster.
- 3:46Is it true? And as soon as I as soon as I
- 3:50saw the news, I thought, I got a guy for this and I called you
- 3:53and you don't like at that point, it was still fresh.
- 3:55It was still brand new. It was still just TMZ reports.
- 4:00So that was just kind of how important Hogan is not only to
- 4:04the wrestling world, but to just pop culture and to the the world
- 4:08at large. You know, Hogan won the title
- 4:10from the Iron Sheik at MSG in 1984 and Vince McMahon shot him
- 4:14to the absolute moon. You know, Vincent Hogan really,
- 4:19really changed the business from the regional, you know,
- 4:22territory structure. And then with a little bit of
- 4:25help from MTV on the way to WrestleMania in 1990, excuse me,
- 4:30in 1985, you know, after that Mania.
- 4:33And Hogan was really the first wrestler to transition into
- 4:36stardom. Hell, he was even on kids bed
- 4:38sheets thanks to Rock and wrestling.
- 4:40I think some of us from this show may have even had those.
- 4:43Actually, I'm fairly certain that that was the case.
- 4:47So, you know, as we look, Hogan has even more moments.
- 4:52You can look at WrestleMania 3 slamming Andre, of course, that
- 4:56that feud being a massive for Hogan and his mega stardom, the
- 5:00mega powers exploding or the mega powers, you know, storyline
- 5:04and as a whole was something that is still talked about as
- 5:07being one of the best storylines in wrestling.
- 5:09WrestleMania 6 against The Ultimate Warrior are still
- 5:12reasons why people are wrestling fans to this day.
- 5:16And then, you know, Hogan did it again in 1996 6 when he turns
- 5:20heel with WCW and Hollywood Hogan is born and change the
- 5:24business for for the better. If you really think about it.
- 5:28There's so many more things to talk about with Hogan's, you
- 5:30know, lasting impression on the business and what he did.
- 5:32But I do need to talk about WrestleMania 18 versus The Rock,
- 5:36which may be one of our favorites here on the Extra
- 5:38Cooler show. And you can go back and listen
- 5:41more about it way back on episode 11, Nick and Jim were in
- 5:44the house for it. So it's definitely fun to hear
- 5:47their first hand experiences with, with WrestleMania 18
- 5:51against The Rock. But yeah, without, without
- 5:54Hogan, the business really wouldn't be what it is today.
- 5:56And I, I can honestly say there wouldn't be an extra cooler show
- 5:59without Hulk Hogan in our lives. Hogan has been a topic on in
- 6:04some way, shape or form on 28 of our 190 episodes.
- 6:09That's roughly 15% of the extra Cooler show has Hulk Hogan on it
- 6:13and this episode is no different.
- 6:15You know, I hope you all have been training and saying your
- 6:18prayers and taking your vitamins for the Hulkster over the last
- 6:20week, but sit back and enjoy some even more Hogan chaos from
- 6:25SummerSlam 1990. And if you want more, I highly
- 6:28recommend going back and re watching his Hall of Fame speech
- 6:32from 2005 leading into WrestleMania 21.
- 6:35It's on YouTube. But it's pretty cool to see
- 6:37Hogan, the professional wrestler, the mega star, get his
- 6:40flowers from fans and wrestlers alike on that video.
- 6:44And I will leave you with how Hogan left us during that 2005
- 6:49Hall of Fame speech. And then we'll get you right
- 6:51into Summer Slam in 1990, brother.
- 6:55And at the end of the day, the WWE has the greatest athlete
- 7:00athletes in the world. It's the greatest form of
- 7:02entertainment in the world. And now, because they've
- 7:05inducted me into the Hall of Fame, Hulkamania will be
- 7:09immortal. Hulkamania will live forever.
- 7:12And what you're going to do, brothers, when the WWE runs wild
- 7:17on. You.
- 7:18Thank you. Welcome back to Part 2 of our
- 7:30SummerSlam spectacular episode of the Extra Cooler show.
- 7:33My name is Nick, otherwise known as Extra Cooler.
- 7:36Oh, that was a mouthful. And I know.
- 7:38Oh. Man.
- 7:41I'm joined by Matt, Mike, and Jim as usual.
- 7:44You can find us on Instagram at Extra Cooler and at the Extra
- 7:47Cooler Show. Join us over on our Discord
- 7:49channel. It's gonna come in handy because
- 7:52we are This is like the season finale of of the extra cooler
- 7:57show, right? Like Jim always teases seasons
- 8:00and I don't feels. Appropriate.
- 8:01It feels appropriate. Right.
- 8:03We're recording this in July and here we are.
- 8:05This is like a yeah two-part season finale like in the 90s
- 8:09and where we left left last left off was the Bushwackers going
- 8:12down a log flume and the WrestleMania 7 commercial.
- 8:15It's like the perfect Cliff anchor.
- 8:17We are pre recording this like we're demolition with clean face
- 8:21paint. Yeah, we got all freshened back
- 8:24up again and fired it back up. Do you think that the
- 8:28Bushwackers survived that ride? I doubt it it was.
- 8:33What's the pit? Pit of jobbers.
- 8:35Try to lick. Someone's head in front.
- 8:37Of them sardines sandwich while they were riding it.
- 8:40Drinking. Drinking the log flume water.
- 8:42Do you think they do that? They probably would.
- 8:44So we've already kind of teased this a little bit, but a little
- 8:47peek behind the curtain. First of all, it's thank you for
- 8:50listening to this podcast. I, I've been saying a lot
- 8:53lately. I am so appreciative to anybody
- 8:55that hops on and turns this on as one of their choices of their
- 9:00wrestling podcast that they listen to.
- 9:03But the truth is, is we're we're approaching Year 5 of this
- 9:06podcast and we all love it. We're all here for it.
- 9:10But when we started this, our kids weren't that old.
- 9:13And we've realized over the years that the you.
- 9:16Weren't even 40 yet. Yeah.
- 9:19That's true. That's part of the problem
- 9:20there, yeah. Yeah, that the summers get busy
- 9:24and things pop up and I, I love this podcast, but I don't want
- 9:29to tell my wife and my kids know we can't do that because I have
- 9:32to record this podcast. How do you get out of the pool?
- 9:35I got to talk about. I got to talk about scanner.
- 9:39I got Matsui. So the truth is, is like in the
- 9:42summer, we were always overloaded and like, there's
- 9:46always conflicts that pop up. But anyway, So what we've
- 9:48decided to do is this is our our season finale, if you will, and
- 9:54we have all intentions of returning to you in the fall.
- 9:58But we're leaving the door open in case if we decide to hop on
- 10:02and record in in the month of August, whether it's because
- 10:05something big on that Summer slam happens, something big in
- 10:09wrestling period happens or or. If stop by coming back from the
- 10:15dead, yeah. Yeah, that's that's an emergency
- 10:18episode right there. Break the glass.
- 10:21Here we come. Or like Jim said, if you guys
- 10:23throw something out on our Discord channel, especially if
- 10:25you're a new member and you say cover this challenge, you never
- 10:29know what would happen. Challenge.
- 10:31Accepted. If you're joining just to tell
- 10:33us, hey, you got to cover this. Yeah, it's that spicy.
- 10:36If we like take a quick look and we're like shit.
- 10:42So have No Fear. Again, thank you for listening.
- 10:45You know, feel free to go back in the archives.
- 10:47There's so much summer content that we have out there and
- 10:50rather than us like pushing it again, just go have fun.
- 10:55Just go search through or, or we'll see you in September or if
- 10:58you miss us that much, like I said, hop in the discard.
- 11:02Matt, you got some quick housekeeping before we play a
- 11:04quick game. Oh, a game.
- 11:07Well, enough is enough, and it's time.
- 11:10For housekeeping. After Part 1, we started talking
- 11:18about during the Sherry segment that AWWF official came to the
- 11:23ring and informs the sink that Sapphire has 30 seconds to make
- 11:28it to the ring or risk of forfeiture.
- 11:31I thought it was an interesting way that they say risk of
- 11:33forfeiture, but it was the guy with that classic almost bowl
- 11:37looking hair that you think of when you think of a WWF show
- 11:42from the early 90s and we couldn't figure out his name in
- 11:45the moment that is Renee Goulet. So he started in the AWA, which
- 11:51was then the WWWF, or excuse me then was in the WWWF in the 70s
- 11:57and 80s. He was a www.f tag team champion
- 12:00with Carl Gotch, which was in December of 1971 and they were
- 12:06defeating the crazy Luke Graham and Tarzan Tyler.
- 12:10That's where they won the titles from.
- 12:12But he retired in 1987, and he was one of the He was also one
- 12:17of the officials that tried to save The Ultimate Warrior after
- 12:20he was locked in the casket by the under.
- 12:22Oh, yes, yeah. Or more memory for this little
- 12:25warrior guy here. We always called him like Hulk
- 12:28Hogan's brother or like. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:31I think was it fake Hulk Hogan? I myself and my brother Brian
- 12:36were like kind of fascinated by this guy 'cause you always show
- 12:39up when it was like, you know, the shit was hitting the fan and
- 12:41it's like, oh, there's fake Hulk Hogan or whatever it was.
- 12:44Yeah. Renee Goulet.
- 12:46That was his name. That was his name.
- 12:48It's the hare. I mean, he's got the same.
- 12:49Definitely the hare. A little sleazier almost, which
- 12:52is hard to believe. Oh yeah, sleazier.
- 12:54A good word. All right, you guys want to play
- 12:58a game. I got a game for you guys that
- 13:00we're going to we're going to play right now.
- 13:01I'm going to have you guys blind rank wrestlers from the first
- 13:06half of SummerSlam. 90 card that we covered in Part 1.
- 13:10OK, so here's how this is going to go.
- 13:12There's five empty slots, and I'm gonna give you wrestler.
- 13:15I'm gonna give you the first guy.
- 13:16I want you to slot him somewhere 1234 or five.
- 13:20Then I'll give you the second wrestler, and then the 3rd and
- 13:23the 4th and the 5th, OK? So choose wisely as I present
- 13:28these to you. OK, Let's.
- 13:30Do it. You're ready.
- 13:31The first wrestler that I'd like you to rank numbers one through
- 13:345 before we hit record, Mike went and jumped the shark is
- 13:41Marty Gianetti. Rank Marty Janetti one through.
- 13:45Five. I knew he was going to be first.
- 13:47So you have to rank them how? What are we ranking them for?
- 13:51Like most overall? Hard overall.
- 13:53No, no, nothing. I'm sorry, that's a thank you
- 13:56for bringing that up. Just overall career.
- 14:00Overall career. Oh, wow.
- 14:02Oh. All right, that changes.
- 14:03Everything let's do overall WWF career.
- 14:07OK, that's fair. Their time in the Federation.
- 14:10I'm going. To say. 4 You said genetti the
- 14:13genetti. Oh boy. 4/4 sounds pretty
- 14:17appropriate. I'm with you guys.
- 14:19I think Party Marty is headed in at #4.
- 14:23Yeah, You know, Brett's around up there, right?
- 14:27Perfect. Cato could be in there.
- 14:29Oh no. Well, Cato's in the back half,
- 14:31but you don't know, he might not even Nick's going to like not
- 14:33hold these guys back and really left ranking, you know, Paul
- 14:37Roma or something, right? God forbid if Paul Roma is the
- 14:40head of party. Marty All right, Ready.
- 14:43Move him. SEC.
- 14:45As a safety, I don't know. Marty, Marty.
- 14:47Three. Put him at three.
- 14:48Put him at 3:00. No, no, no.
- 14:50It's. Party Marty Ginetti, the patron
- 14:51St. of the Extra Cooler show. That's right.
- 14:53Continental Champion. I I he's getting extra, He's
- 14:56getting extra points because he is the patron St. of the extra
- 15:00cooler show as Jim as so eloquently put him.
- 15:03I don't control the screen. I'm controlling the right guys.
- 15:06I'm putting him at. Three.
- 15:08All right, there he is. Marty Ginetti at #3 ready,
- 15:11ready. Here's your second superstar,
- 15:12Jake the Snake Roberts. All right.
- 15:15This has to be two if you're holding out for Brett.
- 15:18Yeah, yeah, yeah. This would have been if we kept
- 15:21Marty at 4:00. This would have been the the
- 15:23rock. Solid three.
- 15:24Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I'm comfortable with two because
- 15:28you know he's going to throw us some sort of trash.
- 15:31Sean is out there bro. Yeah.
- 15:34Yeah, but messed up. We messed up.
- 15:37OK, Jake the snake is ready. Yeah.
- 15:40We're good. Jake's at #2 ready #3 the big
- 15:45boss man. OK, that I feel good about this.
- 15:48Yeah, I miss that. All right.
- 15:50Never had a title. Yeah.
- 15:53Another one or hardcore title I guess.
- 15:55Another one that's close to the extra cooler.
- 15:57Maybe not necessarily the show, but we'll interact with with you
- 16:01online I'm pretty sure. Not big boss man, but his son.
- 16:03Obviously big boss man. So they got we've got, we're
- 16:07looking at spots one and five are open right now. 2 is Jake, 3
- 16:10is Marty, 4 is boss man number, fourth choice that I am going to
- 16:15give you. Here comes the Dick move.
- 16:17Dusty. No, he's in the back.
- 16:20He's in the front. Go.
- 16:21Mr. Perfect. One, he can't be 5.
- 16:27Yeah, yeah, I like it. I like it because if Brett comes
- 16:30up, then Matt is going to be like, you know, he's going to
- 16:32put a do a celebration around his.
- 16:34House and Shawn are both out there.
- 16:37That's fine. I'm I'm into it.
- 16:38I'll. Take it.
- 16:39He can't be 5 perfect. Come on.
- 16:43I'm begrudgingly walking. It in perfect I What if I throw?
- 16:47You Shawn Michaels right now, you're going to put him at #5.
- 16:49Or Brent. Or that's the whole game.
- 16:52Game right? Well gentlemen, you have played
- 16:57this game wisely. Because the number 5.
- 16:59Superstar is Texas tornado all right I.
- 17:03Like this ranking? I I.
- 17:06Perfect you. Guys did a really nice job on
- 17:09this. I'm kudos to you.
- 17:11I thought I had you for a split second there.
- 17:13It was tricky. I thought for sure Brett would
- 17:15appear. Yeah, I purposely kept Brett and
- 17:18Sean off of this. I couldn't help myself, I had to
- 17:23throw flaws. All right, so your your blind.
- 17:26Rankings are. Perfect Jake, Marty Bossman and
- 17:30Texas Tornado. Kudos to you guys.
- 17:32I am wow, I should have thrown you Texas tornado earlier.
- 17:37I'm really. Pleased that we put Marty at
- 17:383:00. I am too.
- 17:40I was about to say the same thing.
- 17:41I think Marty, you could argue bossman.
- 17:44Bossman and Marty you could argue.
- 17:47I think Bossman obviously in in the regular WWF fan fandom.
- 17:52Longwood. Longevity as well.
- 17:55But Party Marty's just crack a butt.
- 17:57Nice man. Let's let's do it.
- 17:58Yeah, and the rockers were, I mean, Bossman was over, but
- 18:02rockers were so over, so. Yeah.
- 18:04So you could, you could definitely argue it.
- 18:06It's it's, it's a fun game. I'm cool with it.
- 18:08Yeah, we'll have to play it again.
- 18:10But yeah, again, that was based off the first half of Summer
- 18:13Slam 1990. So if you didn't listen to it,
- 18:16go back, hit pause right now, go back to listen to Part 1 and
- 18:19then join us and and continue it right now because we're best
- 18:21part. You if you play along, tell us
- 18:25what you had in the discord. Go.
- 18:27I like that. I like that.
- 18:29If you guys didn't pick up on it already, we want you to join our
- 18:32discord. So yeah, stop being lazy.
- 18:36Click the link, join it. It's just an extra app on your
- 18:39phone, right? It's better than Facebook and
- 18:41looking at your grandma. Yeah, if you're taking, if
- 18:43you're taking a dump and you're dumb with your New York Times
- 18:46puzzles for the day and you need to look something else and
- 18:48you're sick of the other stuff, pop on Discord and read about,
- 18:50you know, all the fun stuff we talked about.
- 18:52Hell yeah. So we're continuing.
- 18:54Now. Summer Slam 1990 which takes
- 18:57place on Monday, August 27th, 1990 from the The Spectrum in
- 19:02Philadelphia, PA. There's close to a little over
- 19:0519,000 people. The tagline is the heat returns.
- 19:10This is the third annual SummerSlam and we are picking up
- 19:13right where we left off with a Demolition backstage interview.
- 19:20If, if you care to watch along, we're not doing this and watch
- 19:23along presentation, but we are like almost exactly halfway
- 19:27through the pay-per-view at one hour and 20 minute mark.
- 19:31And Demolition is basically here ranting and raving how they're
- 19:34pissed that Legion of Doom came to help.
- 19:37They would have won without the help of, of Legion of Doom
- 19:41against the Heart Foundation that is.
- 19:43And I have a massive gripe with this.
- 19:47OK, there. I, I alluded to this in Part 1.
- 19:51There are so many promos that must have been taped before the
- 19:55event began, or like the next day or the next night or the day
- 19:59before, because the demolition is standing there with me and
- 20:03Gene. In front of that like clouded
- 20:05classic summer slam screen and they look like they took turns
- 20:11spraying each other's body with a, a like a a mistake bottle.
- 20:16They have the cleanest. There is no chance these two
- 20:20these 3 wrestled at all like and they're they're they're they're
- 20:25pissed. They're fired up all right.
- 20:29Yeah, the line in the Warrens Yvonne Werewolves of London.
- 20:33What? What is it?
- 20:33His hair? His face paint was perfect,
- 20:38which makes. Me think Axe Denny's head.
- 20:44Because a couple months later, Axe's hair was perfect.
- 20:49Survivor Series, 1990. Oh yeah, famous, famous signage.
- 20:55So hawk, you'll be Hawking hot dogs in the stands and animal
- 20:58you'll be neutered their their key tagline.
- 21:03What did Crush say? Nothing.
- 21:05Crush. Crush.
- 21:08Crush Crush very looked very strange to me here.
- 21:13I don't know what it is and they kind of hide him in the back.
- 21:15Obviously he's the tallest one, but huge.
- 21:17Compared to the other two. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:19But for some reason he looks more naked than he normally is
- 21:22because that makes sense. Like he's got 1, you know, And
- 21:25he wears trunks to the ring, which is like crazy that I'm
- 21:29even like putting that together. But I think what it is is he
- 21:31wears the tall boots and then the big knee pads.
- 21:33So the only like skin that you see is from knee to crotch I
- 21:37guess you can say. But.
- 21:39He's wearing these like, shredded pants, like it looks
- 21:42like somebody that has like holy leggings, like a woman would
- 21:46wear leggings with holes in them in the thighs.
- 21:48Like that's what it kind of looks like.
- 21:49And it's jarring to me looking at him because he looks more
- 21:53naked than I. Remember as as off putting in
- 21:56general I think as demolitions ring gear.
- 21:58Is he the other guys, like you said, are the same size
- 22:01basically right? And they're kind of squat
- 22:03looking, built like a fire hydrant Guys where this guy's
- 22:06stretch and it it works even less on him the demo gear are
- 22:11they and he. Doesn't have like any of the
- 22:13straps on on the top. And stick up on the pants.
- 22:16It's so. Weird.
- 22:19It's almost like he's got an Ahmed Johnson type thing going
- 22:22on where the knee pad is over his thigh.
- 22:24I don't know, it's weird. If you look at photos of him
- 22:28like in his ring gear, it's it's very different than what you're
- 22:31seeing here. And it like I said, just jarring
- 22:33because he looks more naked than normal.
- 22:35And I think he's like relaxed a lot too, because his potbelly is
- 22:39hanging out a little. Bit more too.
- 22:41He probably has one of the longer mullets of all time too,
- 22:44I would say, right? Like he's got a oh.
- 22:46Yeah, crazy mullet rivals like the Michaels 1 you know,
- 22:50wrestling 10 era. I'd say you know is a serious.
- 22:54Mullet of mullets Next up, we've got the Brother Love show and
- 23:00brother Love is here with his special guest Sergeant
- 23:04Slaughter. And basically this is like a
- 23:06reintroduction of the character Sergeant Slaughter, right?
- 23:10Like he, you know, for me personally, I knew Sergeant
- 23:15Slaughter from Hulk Hogan's Rock and wrestling, right?
- 23:18He was like the main bad guy on that show.
- 23:21And now he's been John from WWF for a while and here he is
- 23:25coming back and this is their their opportunity to have
- 23:29brother Love, who is a heel, you know, in ring heel manager.
- 23:36I don't even know he's he's not managing manage.
- 23:38Not at the I don't think. So that's the point, not.
- 23:41Here nobody. But he's here with the brother.
- 23:43Love Show whenever he's on. Yeah, whenever he's on the
- 23:45television. He's yeah, he's a heel persona
- 23:47at least, yeah. And he's here to reintroduce
- 23:52this bad guy, Sergeant Slaughter, who is?
- 23:54Like a long colossal prick. Hard launch of the Iraqi
- 23:58sympathizer. Yeah, Oh my God.
- 24:01How nervous do you think Vince is behind the scenes here for
- 24:04this whole thing? Like this is a roll of the dice.
- 24:06Right. Like this is, this is ballsy
- 24:08man. This is, could you imagine this
- 24:1035 years later, like them trying to pull something like this off
- 24:15you? You could not get away with this
- 24:17in wrestling nowadays at all, I don't think.
- 24:19I mean, although they tried it in the 2000s when we weren't
- 24:24watching. But, but here he is, Sergeant
- 24:27Slaughter's out there and he's presenting the Great American
- 24:29Award. He claims that the United States
- 24:32has become soft and weak, and he's declaring, he's declaring
- 24:36war on Nikolai Volkov. Like, this is the best we can
- 24:40do. We're going to like, shoot this
- 24:42guy to the moon and he's declaring war on Nikolai.
- 24:45Volkov. Yeah, yeah, he's punching down
- 24:47for sure here. Nikolai is like 60 years old it
- 24:50looks like at this point too, you know?
- 24:53Yeah, and he's this bumbling, happy go lucky Nikolai Volkov at
- 24:57this point too. It's.
- 24:58Yes, I love about Ko and he uses the term here.
- 25:02Pinko. Pinko commie maggot scum.
- 25:05It's the four that's great. Put that on the.
- 25:10Put that on the hat there and. I love that Roddy Piper calls
- 25:17brother love blubber love. Yeah, yeah, that's the classic
- 25:20Piper stuff. Yep, and but they were trying to
- 25:23sell Drill Sergeant Slaughter as.
- 25:26Yeah. Drill.
- 25:27Yeah. Yeah.
- 25:28And they do, Vince that often. Drill Vince Slaughter.
- 25:32Doing his Vince thing and and talking him up and keep in mind
- 25:35like this being in Philadelphia all throughout this entire card
- 25:39and we're going to get to a lot of it in the back half here is
- 25:42very you know 1776 constitution and like a very much American
- 25:47history. And here we are with slaughter
- 25:50coming in and being this you know Iraqi sympathizer.
- 25:54Like you said, Jim, that you know what they've called him for
- 25:56so many years, but he. Says, and I quote, he says that
- 25:59Saddam Hussein is going to kick our boys butts if war broke out
- 26:03tomorrow, which like imagine pitching that to Sergeant
- 26:06Slaughter. Like that's a like people are,
- 26:09you know, it's Mr. Gigg. Sure, like it's not as people
- 26:13don't think it's as real as they once did maybe, but like people
- 26:17there's people out there that sure do think it's real and they
- 26:19would like stab a man for that. You know that's that's wild
- 26:23shit. I'm.
- 26:23Surprised that I'm sure there's stories that about slaughters
- 26:27like life being at risk in many territories and different areas.
- 26:32Slaughter does seem like, I mean like later on he's a he's like a
- 26:36Vince stooge, I would assume, right.
- 26:37He's like the commissioner later.
- 26:39Obviously that's hey Faye, but like he seems like a serious
- 26:42behind the scenes guy and he's probably a car or whatever,
- 26:44Vince. Vince Guy.
- 26:45Feet in my family. After he drops the title to
- 26:48Hogan at 7, he goes in teams with freaking Hacksaw Jim
- 26:52Duggan. I mean, come on, Jesus Christ.
- 26:54I mean, it's redemption. The only thing worse than that
- 26:56is throw. Throw the Bushwhackers with
- 26:58those two and we're off to the races.
- 27:00I'm pretty sure that's a Survivor Series team.
- 27:03No, you're thinking of WrestleMania 8, the 8.
- 27:05Oh yes, yes, that's correct, The Family Feud host one.
- 27:10But could you imagine being like Ultimate Warrior?
- 27:14Like you're you're doing such a bad job at carrying the company
- 27:18that they have to introduce this jabroni as.
- 27:20A heel. To take the title like and oh
- 27:24man, brutal. Brutal.
- 27:27Anyway, I I don't know the history.
- 27:28Is that the plan from the jump though?
- 27:29I don't think so. Like that's.
- 27:31No, because originally the. OK so originally, and I know I'm
- 27:34gonna jump things but we haven't really talked about him at all
- 27:38or enough. Fred Ottman Typhoon is a major
- 27:42character leading up fan of the show.
- 27:45Originally the story is supposed to be Typhoon turning on on
- 27:51Hogan and then it going on to be Hogan and Typhoon at
- 27:55WrestleMania 7 for No title involved.
- 27:58But you know, they decided to take advantage of the real life
- 28:03storyline and and and the war and and all that and bring in
- 28:07slaughter and obviously one last grasp with Hogan and.
- 28:12Wasn't Ottman also getting too big for his britches or
- 28:14something like that? Supposedly, that's definitely
- 28:16that's the rumor that Pritchard that Conrad pitched to Pritchard
- 28:20that he was too getting too like cocky about himself.
- 28:24So Vince wanted to like pump the brakes on him, but like dude,
- 28:28guys dressed like like tug boat to Tooting his way through
- 28:34wearing white white. Pants.
- 28:36But like even the, the even the poster and like the graphic that
- 28:39I came up with for for this, like it's got Hogan and typhoon
- 28:43in the square like, you know, like so it it was definitely a
- 28:47last minute thing like that. They switched gears so.
- 28:51I don't know that they robbed you of a Hogan Typhoon chocolate
- 28:55jacket. Damn it.
- 28:58Take him money out of your pocket.
- 29:00They're calling him Tugster now Hogan and a promo calling him
- 29:04Tugster. That's like a that's a little
- 29:06too close to tugger for me, you know, like.
- 29:08Like, yes, all right, let's talk about what's in everybody's
- 29:13cooler. I don't even know if we have a
- 29:14drop for this anymore. We do.
- 29:16We do. Here we go.
- 29:17You're. Stupid.
- 29:19Show me something great. Look what a.
- 29:24Kick like it had the Royal mumble graphic.
- 29:27The cooler is brought to you by Sloop Brewing Company.
- 29:29Sloop Brewing is known for their hazy and golden Ipas like Juice
- 29:32Bomb and Supersoft. Who wants to go first in this
- 29:37beautiful summer night? I have two drinks because my
- 29:40wife came home from her parents house and delivered me a like a
- 29:44vodka something, I don't even know what it is, but I already
- 29:48had, I had yeah, I had a yeah, No, hell yeah.
- 29:51I was not going to complain about that.
- 29:52But I had a beer from I got out on vacation and went down to the
- 29:56Outer Banks. We stopped in Shenandoah
- 30:00National Park and and in Front Royal, the town leading up to
- 30:04it, there's a brewery, Vibrissa Northbound West Coast Double
- 30:09IPA. It's like 18.4%.
- 30:11It's very West Coast Y and the double makes it really kind of
- 30:15like, you know, you taste the the alcohol for sure.
- 30:18But it's good and it's refreshing and I like it and
- 30:21it's a good drink for the back half of summer Slam, that's for
- 30:24sure. Delicious.
- 30:27Michael Michael Wurquake. Yeah, so I got try.
- 30:31Not to spill your drink while you're bouncing back and forth
- 30:33like earthquake, by the way. Oh yeah, cuz I'm work Quake.
- 30:37That's right. Yeah.
- 30:41I got another cut water. I had one a couple of weeks ago.
- 30:44Oh nice but re upped on them. This Queens what?
- 30:49Is that Queens cut water? No, I'm sorry.
- 30:52Are you drinking that out of a can?
- 30:54Right out of a can. No, no, no.
- 30:55Oh. You poured it on ice.
- 30:57On ice, yeah. Oh yeah, I've had that out of
- 30:59the can, that that stuff is strong, man.
- 31:01It it is 12 1/2% so one of those you know, it makes you feel nice
- 31:07for sure we're. Going to see work Quake just
- 31:09fall over. I'm going to look over.
- 31:12Yeah. I'm bouncing though, yeah.
- 31:14Oh wait, is it? It's a seltzer.
- 31:17No. It's like a like a Margarita in
- 31:18a can Margarita. OK, gotcha.
- 31:21Well, there's legit tequila in it.
- 31:23Yeah, I feel like they're right up Jim's alley, too.
- 31:26I feel like somebody needs to deliver some Cut Waters to Jim
- 31:30like they're legit. Is it like the I've been having
- 31:32the the ranch water that Yeah, same kind of thing, yeah.
- 31:37But more slimy. Gotcha.
- 31:41So for me, I found my way to a Lagunitas my father had some
- 31:47extra. Well, we went to his house.
- 31:49I've seen that one before. My grandmother's 95th birthday
- 31:53and we had a lot of extra. Yeah, cheers to grandma.
- 31:57So we had a lot of extra beers in the cooler and I took a
- 32:00couple home. I saw these Lagunitas.
- 32:02It's called the Beast of Both Worlds.
- 32:04I've never had it before, and I had to look into what it was all
- 32:08about. So it's essentially one of their
- 32:10newest beers, and it's a combination of East Coast hazy,
- 32:16but West Coast clear crispness. And it doesn't make sense,
- 32:20right? It's like kind of this
- 32:22hermaphrodite, hermaphrodite of a beer here.
- 32:26It's got both old styles. It's a little strange.
- 32:29But it's not. It's pretty, pretty sweet.
- 32:34It's pretty sweet. So I, I, I'm, it's, it's
- 32:36definitely something that I'm enjoying, but I don't know if I
- 32:39would be able to have like a ton of these.
- 32:42I met and you're like back on the wagon here.
- 32:46It feels like, you know, he's like, listen to him talk about
- 32:49the the drink like that. I was like, whoa, look at this
- 32:51guy. Had to.
- 32:52I had to look it up. A bicoastal IPA is what they're
- 32:55calling it. So.
- 32:56If you're really back, you would have talked about the mouthfeel.
- 32:59The the mouthfeel fruity blast of Citra and mosaic.
- 33:03So those are two two of my favorite hop strings.
- 33:05So it yeah, it says get finished steeper smooth wasn't.
- 33:09Mosaic, a Midget wrestler in the like the mid 90s.
- 33:13Yes, yes, we covered them recently.
- 33:15Nick, what do you drink? You want to talk some more about
- 33:22Mosaic? I do.
- 33:24Real quick, apologies. Single cut is the Queen's
- 33:27Brewery. I'm sorry.
- 33:28Oh yes, single cut. Yes, I have tequila.
- 33:30I'm drinking a play. Music.
- 33:33Play the music, not that music. Tito Santana.
- 33:39'S music, of course. You have Tito's?
- 33:42Yes. Should I talk?
- 33:44About the background, here we go.
- 33:45There we go. Thank you.
- 33:47All right. I have some Escalon tequila with
- 33:49a little with a little lime flavored seltzer.
- 33:54Yeah, it's summertime, baby. It's like my daily intake.
- 33:58Can we talk about? How much of A value Tito?
- 34:02Santana is on Cameo $15 baby. It's 15 bucks in our Knicks
- 34:07group chat that they somebody actually went out and bought a
- 34:12Tito Santana cameo and sent it to the group as it's been a, you
- 34:17know, a rough end to the Knicks season.
- 34:20And apparently we learned that Tito Santana is a mixed thing.
- 34:24Hell yeah, he. Consoled us a little.
- 34:26Bit all better. I'm gonna start using Tito
- 34:27Santana for everything in my life.
- 34:29I'm gonna use him as like my out of office message next time.
- 34:32Like if someone else it's me. The cameo of Tito, like Jim is
- 34:36low. Yeah, I believe he's not.
- 34:39Here right now. Clearly reading.
- 34:41Clearly reading. From he has not read it before
- 34:44he started recording, that's for sure.
- 34:45He's like, what is this shit? They were 15 bucks he's making
- 34:49probably if he's banging them out like that.
- 34:52He's a smart businessman, very smart.
- 34:54Bucks undercount everybody man. Undercard sell Pashango, you
- 34:58know. Yeah, yeah.
- 34:59Pop He did it in 24 hours or less.
- 35:02Yeah, hell yeah, I agree. He's outside Bushwhackers,
- 35:05whichever 1's still alive. He's always clearly wearing
- 35:08those sunglasses, the slash glasses, you know, what do they
- 35:10call them? The faders?
- 35:12The yes. Yes, All right.
- 35:15Do we need to get back to this card all right?
- 35:17Oh jeez, I forgot where. We play that behind what's in
- 35:21the color every time. Next, our next match goes 3
- 35:27minutes and 22 seconds. It is so Jim Duggan and Nikolai
- 35:32Volkov versus the Orient Express with Mr. Fuji.
- 35:38Fuji is backstage with Orient Express and we have audio on
- 35:41this I do believe, right? Oh yeah.
- 35:44Oh yeah. I like that it's 30 minutes in
- 35:46and we're just getting to a match.
- 35:48It's awesome. I mean, I feel like it's pretty
- 35:52appropriate for Summer Slam 19. 99-O absolutely, that's true.
- 35:54Absolutely. We might go along.
- 35:56Tonight Mike's drinking 1212 percenters.
- 36:00My beer's at 8%. We're I got another one in the
- 36:03cooler next to me man, I got maybe.
- 36:05Drinks I got 2, I got 2 going at once.
- 36:07Nick's got tequila like we're we're in it.
- 36:10It's that Mister Fuji job. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:13From USA, Hacksaw Duggan, you have one cross eye.
- 36:18We hit so hard. After that you have two cross
- 36:22eye. I I've decided that I.
- 36:29I love. Mr. Fuji and I hate Hacksaw Jim
- 36:32Duggan like I, I, I, I hate. I cannot stand Hacksaw Jim
- 36:38Duggan. I think I might dislike him more
- 36:40than the Bushwackers. Wow.
- 36:43Anyway. Do you notice the?
- 36:45I'm sorry, I I know I'm more of a Orient Express.
- 36:48Kato and Tanaka, who's the other guy again in the Sedo Sedo.
- 36:53Thank you. He do you notice in the
- 36:54background he crosses his eyes when he does that?
- 36:58Yeah, for a beat. For a beat.
- 37:01He he does like the full cross eyes.
- 37:03Pretty fantastic. It's a great line.
- 37:05You don't expect him to go in on the guy?
- 37:06'S eyes like that? No, that's a deep dive dive.
- 37:10Huge dig Yeah. For Duggan.
- 37:12Who? Huggan's probably like God damn
- 37:14you man. We're we're before the match,
- 37:18we're interrupted by me and Gene with breaking news.
- 37:20We see Sapphire go into the locker room and slams the door
- 37:23on me and Gene. They're, you know, this is
- 37:27obviously intertwined throughout the entire night and we're going
- 37:32to get to there. We're we're going to get to it,
- 37:34but. It's K fob though because
- 37:36they're real friends like me and Jane and Sapphire.
- 37:41Oh, thanks. Thanks for that.
- 37:43That was the real missus. Lippi's car is green prior.
- 37:50To the match, Dax Ojem Duggan and Nikolai Volkov sing God
- 37:54Bless America I I. Think that.
- 37:58I purposely did not pull this audio.
- 38:00Duggan's voice is offensively bad.
- 38:03I'd say Nikolai has a decent voice.
- 38:04Actually he does 100% but but Duggan is is bad and again like
- 38:10once again where what what what is there to like about Hacksaw
- 38:14Jim Duggan besides the fact they could throw the 2 by 4 up in the
- 38:17air and catch it? He looks.
- 38:19A Royal Rumble winner. He looks like a hoss in this
- 38:21match I think I I'm not a huge Duggan guy either but I think he
- 38:25looks strong this match. He knocks him around.
- 38:27Maybe that's more the Orient Express being talented ring
- 38:30workers and selling the shit out of them Probably.
- 38:33I mean like, he's not silly. Tanaka sells as well as Mr.
- 38:38Perfect in this match. I think so.
- 38:40Yes, I agree. Agreed.
- 38:42And that's the thing you'd think Volkoff and Duggan could hold
- 38:47their own a little bit more. I don't know.
- 38:48It's it's the match is a joke. It's.
- 38:50You get right to dueling atomic drops in the beginning of the
- 38:53match. You don't see that anymore.
- 38:55They don't make them like they used to.
- 38:59I felt like they were booing and This is Philadelphia, but I felt
- 39:03like they were booing Hacksaw and for them, singing the
- 39:06anthem. I mean, it's kind of
- 39:09disrespectful when you think about it.
- 39:10It's like. It was funny though, that they
- 39:14had the microphone. Nikolai is holding it and it's
- 39:16specifically closer to him than it is to Duggan.
- 39:19They're like trying to hide him. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:23Duggan also bad. How about the fact that Duggan
- 39:26is constantly taking that 2 by 4 and pointing it at people as if
- 39:30it's a gun? As an art teacher, I am like
- 39:33throughout my career I'm constantly teaching kids like
- 39:36Nah, sorry guys, we cannot draw guns like or you can't draw a
- 39:39gun pointing at someone. And then we got old Hacksaw in
- 39:42the ring with a 2 by 4 pointing at poor mess or Fuji like he's
- 39:46going to kill him with this Well.
- 39:48It was that cross eyed remark, you know.
- 39:52If these 6-7 year olds were like well I just saw Hacksaw Jim
- 39:56Duggan do it. Hacksaw Duggan did it.
- 40:01Piper, Piper is on fire in this match.
- 40:05And it starts right out the gate when Duggan's music hits and he
- 40:08asks, what do you suppose is the combined IQ of these two fellas?
- 40:11And then while while they're singing the anthem, he goes or
- 40:18God Bless America, he says, sounds like dinner was late at
- 40:20the dog pound. But I think my favorite is
- 40:26during the match when Duggan is in there.
- 40:29He asks, does his tongue hanging out of his mouth give him
- 40:32balance? Oh.
- 40:33My God. Those were Piper's golden,
- 40:36golden remarks during this match.
- 40:40Tanaka. This is a a big splash.
- 40:42Volkov tags in, dug in, and then we get a few clothes lines on
- 40:46Tanaka and Sato and Volkov and dug in then Irish whip their
- 40:51opponents into each other. We get another clothesline from
- 40:54the three-point stands and Dugin pins. 3610 out of that thing
- 40:59though. Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
- 41:00Tanaka sells the hell out of it. Also, can we just talk about how
- 41:06this is how stupid Hacksaw Jim Duggan is, right?
- 41:10Picture the ring. Picture the ring.
- 41:12Right. Anybody that's listening,
- 41:13Picture the ring. Picture a square.
- 41:16OK, Orient Express lines up in the top left hand corner of the
- 41:21ring, right? Where would you think Hacksaw
- 41:23would go? The bottom right hand corner?
- 41:26Nope. This stupid idiot goes to the
- 41:29bottom right hand side. Have you ever seen that in A tag
- 41:32team match? Have you ever seen two guys line
- 41:35up on the same side of the ring? Maybe it has to do with this
- 41:39cross eye? Yeah, it is cross eye and also
- 41:44the the. Right spot.
- 41:47Already expressed are wearing like their color rush uniforms
- 41:49and they look like they might be color blind right too cross eyed
- 41:53and color blind. Yes, exactly.
- 41:56Look at that point. Look at let's well, Duggan.
- 41:58'S the only one in blue. Yeah.
- 42:00All right, give it cans in the cooler, somebody.
- 42:02Half a can. Half.
- 42:04Yeah, I'm with you. I don't know.
- 42:06Man, give it -1. Don't you -1 I Duggan looks good
- 42:10here. He's the lowest ever.
- 42:12I don't know. I guarantee there's some other
- 42:16like you know, putrid one like that, but Doug, it looks good,
- 42:21even strong. He's sexy.
- 42:23His music slaps. It does slaps.
- 42:27I I think it's, you know, top 20% of entrance themes.
- 42:32I would say I would argue it's it's so good.
- 42:36It's. What are you giving it?
- 42:37Can't in the corner. I'm going to give it a 1.5.
- 42:41OK, I was going to give it one can.
- 42:42Not even the top 20% of this color of this paper.
- 42:45No way. What do you got against Duggan's
- 42:47theme? It's the best part of the whole
- 42:49deal. Rockers is better.
- 42:51Mr. Perfects is better. Jake's is better.
- 42:55All right. Boston Ants is better all.
- 42:57Right. How about warriors?
- 42:59Is better. Bingo.
- 42:59There you go, We're going to. Talk a little bit about Rick
- 43:03Cruz. Right here.
- 43:04Demolition. Yeah, very much Heart
- 43:06Foundation, Yes. All right.
- 43:09This. Is peak theme music all right?
- 43:11It is peak theme music. Take some notes, all right?
- 43:16Now we. Can move on, thank God.
- 43:18Next match on the card is is Randy Savage King.
- 43:22Oh, wait, I had one last thing. I had one last note.
- 43:25I'm talking I yeah, I do my homework late at night, unlike
- 43:29some of you guys, right? Like, so I have to, like, play
- 43:32it at just a level so that, like, I hope my wife doesn't
- 43:35wake up. And I'm sitting there watching
- 43:36Hacksaw Duggan, you know, go over his music glass.
- 43:40And I always think, like, like, imagine waking up and Hacksaw
- 43:43Jim Duggan's on your screen. The music's blasting.
- 43:45She's like, what the fuck have I done with my life?
- 43:51Of all the guys, right? Like it's weird.
- 43:53Like on paper that's a weird thing to wake up and watch your
- 43:56see your husband watching. That's all I have there.
- 44:00At least his face. At least his face wasn't painted
- 44:03red, white and blue like. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:08Are these bitches? Is Macho King versus Dusty?
- 44:12And before we can get there, we got Dusty trying to get into the
- 44:14locker room, begging Sapphire to answer.
- 44:17And I think it's safe to say that he is one of the worst
- 44:22wrestling actors. What?
- 44:25What are you sick? Come more sick, The man.
- 44:27Whistle after the match. Come more sick baby, I think.
- 44:30That's pretty strong. But yes, he's really.
- 44:33Bad he's he's really. Really bad.
- 44:37Oh damn, you're going to be a hate.
- 44:38Man, for this, yeah, I think so. Come on, come on, baby.
- 44:41I answered the door. It's a he's a one-of-a-kind.
- 44:45I I get where you're coming from, but like, he's, he's just
- 44:48a wrestling creature. Like, it's watching this whole
- 44:52bit. It's insane.
- 44:53Yeah, he's that's, that's what he is.
- 44:55He's born to, to do what he's doing here.
- 44:57It's insane. It's really like watching him
- 45:01anytime I've watched him. And granted, I'm not going to
- 45:03sit here and act like this huge like Dusty Rhodes, you know,
- 45:08fanboy or this guy who's watched so much in his career.
- 45:11But if you've watched anything he's done outside of WWF and
- 45:15then you go watch like this American Dream version of him,
- 45:19it's it's kind of nauseating to see what, what he was asked to
- 45:25do. Like, and you know, like I know
- 45:27we've heard about like all the rumors and stuff and it's just
- 45:32so corny. It's just so like, outside of
- 45:36what he's capable of doing. It's disappointing and it's a
- 45:40missed opportunity. It's like they left money on the
- 45:42table. Like it's like Vince would
- 45:44rather humiliate someone, which I guess is true, right?
- 45:47Then make money. It seems.
- 45:49I I don't know. And then but the fact that like,
- 45:52it's crazy that he paired up with Macho Man like like this is
- 45:57an icon. Like 2 iconic guys who like
- 46:01nobody would ever say like 01 of Macho Man's best opponents is
- 46:05Dusty Rhodes but like. Yeah, on paper, this is the best
- 46:08match on the card, right? On paper.
- 46:09It should be easily, easily and it's it's it's far from it.
- 46:13It goes 2 minutes and 15 seconds.
- 46:16Absolute part of a match. The previous match is better I
- 46:20think. Yes.
- 46:21Before the match you got Sean Mooney, who's like shaking on a
- 46:24ladder that's like not even that high trying to interview Macho
- 46:27King on his. He's doing the whole.
- 46:32Like dude, that ladder is no larger.
- 46:34Than the World Wrestling Federation.
- 46:36We go to New Heights to get our interviews.
- 46:40Todd Pettengill must have watched touched that.
- 46:42And then like, yes, I'm finally going to get a job with this
- 46:45guy. It's like.
- 46:47What do you think this? Is Sean Moody the stairway to
- 46:49heaven? Oh, as macho as macho.
- 46:55So Dusty comes out first and then macho comes out as he's
- 46:59being carried to the ring. And I always the.
- 47:02To me, one of the cool things about this is the macho King
- 47:05gear. It's like you can see how things
- 47:10are about to go over the Top Gear wise for him for macho,
- 47:14right right now he's just got like he's he's got the yellow
- 47:17jacket with the tassels, but it's just a yellow jacket with
- 47:20the tassels. It's not there's no crazy
- 47:22intricate design on it, but he's LED out to to the ring by Sherry
- 47:28on that throne and as. Matt asked in the text.
- 47:34Like what the name of it was. We had called it a palanquin in
- 47:37the past. We were wrong.
- 47:38That's more of like a Indian thing, like the, like Aladdin
- 47:42would you know, like it's covered with the curtains and
- 47:44stuff. This is just like a, it's, this
- 47:46is just like a, it's a platform. There's no like, no proper name
- 47:50for it unfortunately. Yeah, I don't even remember why
- 47:54I was texting that that late so. It was it was a really been
- 47:58watching this. Yeah, it was a word I was trying
- 48:00to. Think of.
- 48:02Poorly spray painted throne. I don't know whatever you want
- 48:06to call it. Yeah, it's like a just a, a, you
- 48:08know, carried throne. That's it.
- 48:11So as Macho King enters the ring, you hear Dibiase's laugh.
- 48:16He's in that like iconic WWF Superstars stage off to like the
- 48:22side of the entrance ring. He, he appears in this spot a
- 48:25lot where he's slapping basketballs away or whatever,
- 48:28right? Like.
- 48:29The mean gene position. Yes, yes.
- 48:31Yes, he's on stage with Virgil telling Dusty he brought his
- 48:35humiliation. That's where Sherry starts.
- 48:39Yes, exactly. He revealed that he has
- 48:42purchased sapphire and outcomes sapphire.
- 48:46She's got a smile on her face, pink dress, fur coat, diamond
- 48:49necklace, bracelet and a bag of money.
- 48:53WF gym bag Yeah baby a nice to sell.
- 48:57How much does Ted get for that on Wrestling for-sale.com?
- 49:00Oh my God that act. Forget about that actual thing.
- 49:05Just a the bag. The classic one that they used
- 49:07to sell got to be at least 200. I love the idea of like Dibiase
- 49:11paying for everything out of AWF duffel bag.
- 49:14Like, yeah. Right.
- 49:16I don't know, like goes to the Ponderosa Steakhouse and he's
- 49:18like, here's here's a. There's a couple hundreds.
- 49:22Yeah. This is to me, this is
- 49:27interesting because I talk about this like when I when we talk
- 49:29about wrestling nowadays. I love intertwined storylines in
- 49:34my professional wrestling, like not just cut and dry, like
- 49:38match, match, match, match. I love something and I love the
- 49:41fact that this weaves its way throughout the card, but after
- 49:46this whole like humiliation thing, we get Dusty Rhodes
- 49:49before the match can even start, walks down the aisle towards
- 49:52Dibiase and Sapphire, but he's attacked from Savage and matches
- 49:58is underway. Sherry interferes it with the
- 50:01match as the referee's distracted.
- 50:04Just you know, your stereotypical back and forth.
- 50:06But the match does not last long.
- 50:08It's it's a little over 2 minutes.
- 50:11It's crazy. Rose makes his brief comeback.
- 50:14Savage is able to pin him after hitting him with Sherry's purse,
- 50:17which is loaded with something. And and that's that man.
- 50:24Sherry at the end of this is screaming and the only way that
- 50:27Sherry can better than the best on the outside of the ring.
- 50:30I just thought that was like a nice touch finish of this match.
- 50:34But otherwise, yeah, it was. Meltzer gave it a -1 and just
- 50:38the same as the the dug in match.
- 50:40But. You know.
- 50:41Loaded purse. That's all well and good, but
- 50:43two minutes and 15 seconds, it's like, oh man, come on.
- 50:46It's just like I said before, like a few minutes ago, it's
- 50:49insane that these two had a match and they like they didn't
- 50:53let them go, like they did not let them wrestle and.
- 50:58It's all for the storyline, baby.
- 50:59That's right. That's what I wrote in my notes.
- 51:01I said my notes are I want to see this match.
- 51:04Like I want to see it. I don't want this crap.
- 51:06And like you said, they have got this storyline like it's the
- 51:09major storyline of the entire card, right?
- 51:11Like in the back, it's like the one that keeps coming back and
- 51:14like they go to it multiple times and obviously there's more
- 51:18there's, but there isn't more to the story.
- 51:20Like they like, doesn't really play out that much more like
- 51:22this is it? Yeah.
- 51:24It sucks. It sucks.
- 51:25It sucks. It's almost like they didn't
- 51:27want to and maybe it's just like recency in my mind, but like
- 51:32would it have played off better if they had Sapphire turn on
- 51:37Dusty in the match and then Dibiase show his his his
- 51:42allegiance with her? I feel like I feel like it plays
- 51:46it better this way, especially in the 1990 lens.
- 51:49Like if you're. Yes, if you're.
- 51:51Thinking about it in the current day wrestling then yeah, that's
- 51:53the pop. That's the big like oh man.
- 51:55But they've they were kind of playing this up and the fact
- 51:58that $1,000,000 man isn't involved in the match.
- 52:00It's a all mental mind games with $1,000,000 man playing on
- 52:04Dusty and now Dusty is so distraught and he does a good
- 52:07job at selling it in the beginning here and, you know,
- 52:10running up the aisle to try to, you know, go save his his lady.
- 52:14But you know, it takes a toll on Dusty.
- 52:17And maybe that's why, you know, you can get over the fact that
- 52:20it's only a 2 minute and 15 second match as opposed to, you
- 52:23know, this grueling one-on-one match.
- 52:25And of course we would want to see that as wrestling fans.
- 52:28But from a storytelling perspective in a 1990 lens, I
- 52:31actually feel like I like this better than it in match turn.
- 52:35Know what happens to it does, Yeah, go ahead.
- 52:38Oh well, I was just going to say then we don't get Dusty asking
- 52:43Hacksaw for help so. That's true.
- 52:47That's true. We we want that this leads I.
- 52:50Do. This does the next pay-per-view
- 52:52survivor Siege, which is crazy to think that it seems so far
- 52:55away from somebody, right? But it is Dusty Rhodes team
- 52:59against the $1,000,000 team. And of course the $1,000,000
- 53:03team features the Undertaker who eliminates Dusty Rhodes.
- 53:07So all roads lead to that, I guess, yeah.
- 53:10So what are you guys giving this cans in the cooler this is?
- 53:1200.250.25 Yeah. Man, I gave this one.
- 53:17I gave it one one can in the cooler and it was because of the
- 53:20loaded purse. I like the one loaded anything
- 53:24gave it an extra half a can above the Duncan match, but
- 53:28yeah. Give me, give me 8 more minutes.
- 53:31I have 6 more minutes with the loading and give it 5 minutes.
- 53:35So much more meaningful though, too.
- 53:37But I mean, you gave it a one. It's not like I'm here, you
- 53:39know? You gave it a three.
- 53:40Yeah. No, I agree.
- 53:41I agree. I would have, I would have liked
- 53:42to have seen a little bit more, a little bit more. 2-3 minutes
- 53:47would have been huge, would have helped, I wrote.
- 53:49Storyline 3 cans match one can. Yeah, I like that.
- 53:54Good point. I like it A.
- 53:55Lot yeah yeah, I guess yeah for hacksaw looking for sapphire
- 54:00just just that alone I'll. Be.
- 54:02Yeah. All right, moving right along
- 54:05our next match is Hulk Hogan with the Big Boss man facing off
- 54:09against Earthquake with Jimmy Hart and Dino Bravo.
- 54:13Before we get to this match, we've got a we, we've got a, a
- 54:19scene with Sean Mooney backstage with the limousine as he sees
- 54:22$1,000,000 man and Virgil and Sapphire getting into the limo.
- 54:28And God, I don't I, I don't even know.
- 54:31I, I'm like over it. I'm just like, I'm frustrated.
- 54:34We see Dusty, you know, running from the ring.
- 54:38Into the back. Go.
- 54:40And then you see Dusty running like towards the I swear you,
- 54:44you here go. Oh yeah, you do absolutely 100%.
- 54:46No, it's you do not have to turn up the volume or anything
- 54:49either. No, it's.
- 54:50Right there, it's a beautiful scene, like the background of
- 54:53Dusty just running alone with his big old back there it the
- 54:58all of the backstage equipment around and you know, seeing this
- 55:02car speed off like it looked like something that Nick should
- 55:05draw intense. Like I really see it.
- 55:08Fruition. That's that's, that's pretty,
- 55:10pretty good. I like that.
- 55:11I think that's going to be. That's a that's a money maker
- 55:13right there. I do like you got Mooney, the
- 55:16dogged journalist going after Ted here, right?
- 55:19He refuses to to, you know, not get an answer from but the first
- 55:24thing he hears is listen, peon like I love he calls him peon
- 55:27right out of the gates and the dusty classic.
- 55:31I love the it's like such AWWE trope of like banging on the
- 55:35limo as it drives away, right? Yeah, it's such a wrestling
- 55:39thing, like banging on the windows and the thing peels out.
- 55:43And so our next match is Hogan versus Earthquake, as I said.
- 55:48And this, this feud goes back to May of 1990, where Hogan is
- 55:54attacked on the Brother Love Show by Earthquake.
- 55:58Earthquake hits him with a chair, jumps on his stomach with
- 56:00an earthquake splash. Hogan's taking off on a
- 56:03stretcher, which we've seen way too many times in Hogan's 90s
- 56:07career. Hogan is gone.
- 56:10He's gone for a good two months. So not the first time that we
- 56:15here on the Extra Cooler Show have covered this, but not also
- 56:19the first time that WWF has covered this.
- 56:21But they are teasing Hogan's possible retirement throughout
- 56:25that span. But Hogan comes back on July
- 56:2814th episode of Superstars says he's coming back and he's gonna
- 56:32face Earthquake at SummerSlam. This is when Tugboat was said to
- 56:37have been in Hogan's corner, but he's attacked by Earthquake and
- 56:42Dino Bravo on the August 18th episode of Superstars, which is
- 56:47like a week before this, which is is pretty crazy.
- 56:51They were like and then right before he's Tugboat receives 2
- 56:58earthquake splashes before being rescued by Big Boss man who is
- 57:02now replacing Tugboat. It's it's very interesting the
- 57:06way that this is all worked itself out.
- 57:11The fact that they thought Tugboat could hold his own in a
- 57:15main event spot is so strange to me.
- 57:19Yeah, the earthquake, typhoon situation and I guess why, you
- 57:24know, why they would shoehorn them in there.
- 57:26But, you know, hearing you guys talking about, you know, him
- 57:28being too big for his britches and Vince wanted to teach him a
- 57:31lesson. You know, that could could
- 57:33certainly be at play here. But you know, it's 1990
- 57:37wrestling like a big behemoth, a monster like that.
- 57:40Being in the ring and being on the good side is not normal
- 57:43either. So, you know, sure, 2025 we're
- 57:47looking at at Tugboat in the main event no way, but here 90
- 57:52All right, all right. I'm going to get Fred Ottman on
- 57:55this show. That's my life's mission now.
- 57:58I've threatened that before, right before.
- 58:01So this is like the common theme.
- 58:03I I talked about this in Part 1. It's interesting to me how we
- 58:08get the deal gets introduced, then we get a backstage promo
- 58:13almost every single time. So does that like like look like
- 58:16a warthog or what? As as.
- 58:20Earthquake. Comes down the aisle and then we
- 58:23get a backstage promo from. Home Wait, this is AD they show
- 58:27ADHD Dino Bravo just running in circles around.
- 58:31Get your energy out. Like it's like dinner's almost
- 58:33ready. Go go outside.
- 58:35Dino just runs around a tree. I feel like, you know, Bravo is
- 58:39like the cartoon dog that is like on side Yes, yes.
- 58:43Where did he? Go.
- 58:44Where did he go? Like that's. 100% he brings in
- 58:47this match. Yeah, if you like fake throw a
- 58:49ball, he's going to chase it, Yeah.
- 58:53Yeah, and on a swivel. Yeah.
- 58:56Hogan backstage has so much baby oil on him.
- 59:01Like it's disgusting the amount of baby oil on his arms.
- 59:06But again, like to me, this looks like clearly a backstage
- 59:11promo that was played on a different recorded on a
- 59:15different day, whether it was before or after.
- 59:18Because Hogan, he's back there and he's wearing one bandana.
- 59:22And then literally a minute later after boss man comes out,
- 59:27Hogan is wearing a completely different bandana on his head.
- 59:30No, this is not to push different merchandise like this
- 59:34is just. This is just poor planning if
- 59:36you ask me. I don't think.
- 59:39I just don't think you know. And he's not as oily.
- 59:42Do they care as much then? You know what I mean?
- 59:44Like it was like, they're not thinking like people are going
- 59:47to like be. Be bringing in on the Extra Cool
- 59:50show. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:52Tearing it apart. And I know they do.
- 59:55I mean, like Vince is big on like, you know, the production
- 59:58of things, right? And like, so I'm sure it's
- 1:00:00something they thought about, but I, I think they're like,
- 1:00:02whatever, like this is how it's going.
- 1:00:04To work. Let's get it done now while we
- 1:00:05can. Nobody cares, brother.
- 1:00:08Yeah, because when you think about it too, for production
- 1:00:10purposes back then in the 90s, like you'd rather get it done
- 1:00:14with and out of the way. And they banged through all
- 1:00:16those like that they used to do like the town ones on Superstar,
- 1:00:19not the town ones, but like whatever city they were visiting
- 1:00:21next for the house show we're. Going to be in Poughkeepsie, NY.
- 1:00:25Exactly something to be said though to me, in my opinion,
- 1:00:29Hogan, like with the full bandana, looks a lot younger
- 1:00:33than Hogan with the. Like the classic band?
- 1:00:36Headband on like under his hair but.
- 1:00:40I I love I love watching this and thinking like imagine, like
- 1:00:45imagine like some Gen. Zier watching this now and like
- 1:00:48be like this was your hero. Like this was like, it must be
- 1:00:51so weird, right? I don't know.
- 1:00:53I don't know what that has to be.
- 1:00:54Harrison. It's like what we thought, like
- 1:00:55you saw like Steamboat Willie, Mickey Mouse cartoon like look
- 1:00:58at it. Our parents were entertained by
- 1:01:00this shit. Like like.
- 1:01:02When you think about this too, like what looks.
- 1:01:05Like mouse? Come on.
- 1:01:07Yeah, what makes Hulk Hogan look so cool?
- 1:01:09Like, I don't know. I don't know it's.
- 1:01:12It's crazy, man. Always Sunny said it best,
- 1:01:14right? Like.
- 1:01:15Skin of a hot dog. Yeah, skin of a hot dog.
- 1:01:19Oh God, how many times did Hogan make his long-awaited return?
- 1:01:24Because it's more they talk about it here and it's more than
- 1:01:28I remember as a kid. Like I don't remember that as
- 1:01:31again, we were like elementary school.
- 1:01:33And it's not something I remember like Hogan
- 1:01:35disappearing, Hogan coming back, Hogan disappearing, coming back.
- 1:01:40But as his music for my time, yeah.
- 1:01:42As his music plays, Hogan spits from inside the ring like a
- 1:01:46massive loogie. On to Earthquake.
- 1:01:48Did you guys catch that? No, no.
- 1:01:50It's just Bret Hart esque. Before we get there, we have to
- 1:01:55go back and talk about how beautiful this promo is.
- 1:01:59Like this is backing up. This is backing up everything
- 1:02:02that I was talking about earlier.
- 1:02:03With this being Thomas Jefferson and Washington.
- 1:02:07Yes, I apologize. Let's take a listen, because
- 1:02:10Hogan gives us something that will live in this soundboard for
- 1:02:12as long as I have it. And let's.
- 1:02:14Let's. You know something?
- 1:02:15That's right, me, Gene. Another chapter in American
- 1:02:19history will be written tonight. It's just as Thomas Bossman
- 1:02:23Jefferson stood at the side of George Washington Hogan as I
- 1:02:26chopped down on the Cherry Tree with the 20 forest pythons will
- 1:02:30chop you down earthquake and the holster never tells a lie.
- 1:02:34So what you going to do when the holster and the Big Boss man
- 1:02:38pass their constitutional rights on to you?
- 1:02:44Oh my I. Apologize for skipping over that
- 1:02:47I I should not have I. Promise it has nothing to do
- 1:02:50with constitutional rights, but this lives in the board forever.
- 1:02:53The holster never tells a lie. Forever.
- 1:02:57Prep. Constitutional rights.
- 1:03:00Hogan never tells a lie. Man.
- 1:03:02He is. He never.
- 1:03:04Tells a. Lie I.
- 1:03:05I I had a nickel for every time he told a lie.
- 1:03:07A. Million yeah, Ohms.
- 1:03:10Can we? Can we do another Thunder in
- 1:03:11Paradise episode just. We might have.
- 1:03:13To for no reason. We we might have to.
- 1:03:17Five years coming up. Real quick on before we move on
- 1:03:21to the match. Real quick, I might be a sick
- 1:03:23freak. I like that you.
- 1:03:26Wow. It's like almost better than the
- 1:03:27sound board right now. Dino.
- 1:03:35Bravo, Real quick because I don't know if we're going to
- 1:03:38touch on him the rest of the way, right?
- 1:03:40Do you know how sometimes someone dies of whatever happens
- 1:03:42to him? I don't know.
- 1:03:43They get a tree falls on when a shark kills him People people
- 1:03:46are like never in a million years would have thought he
- 1:03:48would have gone out that way right but Dino Bravo with what
- 1:03:51the cigarette smuggling like he gets killed in some sort of
- 1:03:54shenanigans with. That Canadian mafia or
- 1:03:56something? Canadian Mafia and you look at
- 1:03:57him, you're like, yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:04:02We're like his. I think when his mom, like when
- 1:04:04he was first born, she's like, this is some bitch going to die
- 1:04:06in like a fucking cigarette smuggling operations.
- 1:04:10I'm sorry at first place. Mrs. Bravo, how could you say
- 1:04:16that? I see it.
- 1:04:19He's going to be smuggling camel Turkish goals.
- 1:04:22I don't know if that's not what a French person sounds.
- 1:04:26Like sound like a yeah. Smuggling.
- 1:04:28Yeah, smuggling. I can't do it.
- 1:04:35I think if he he didn't smoke Camel, Turkish goals, he smoked.
- 1:04:41He smoked defense Defense shit. Where do you put Earthquake?
- 1:04:49Where do you put Earthquake as Hogan's opponent?
- 1:04:52Like one of Hogan's WWF. Credible threat.
- 1:04:56He's a credible threat and he's only Yeah, and he's only 27
- 1:05:01years old. 27 years old. A double axe handle off the top
- 1:05:04rope. Yeah, that's yes, Earthquake's
- 1:05:08the man I I'm into. I, I To me, Earthquake is more
- 1:05:11of a credible opponent than Sergeant Slaughter.
- 1:05:14Like, you know, like Earthquake is a badass and like.
- 1:05:18Hogan was running train over Slaughter.
- 1:05:21Man, yeah exactly. I want Earthquake at
- 1:05:22WrestleMania 7 instead. I wish they were that program.
- 1:05:26Put the put the strap on Earthquake and let him drop it
- 1:05:30to Hogan. Right?
- 1:05:31Like at some way, somehow? Talk about you.
- 1:05:34Talk about a guy like Jake. You talk about a guy like Boss
- 1:05:38Man never getting a title and like, but Earthquake Man, that
- 1:05:41guy would have benefited from putting the strap on him for a
- 1:05:44little bit. But I feel like they never
- 1:05:46really did that back in like this era, the early 90s.
- 1:05:49They never put it on a heel for long enough where they would
- 1:05:53become a credible guy, you know what I mean?
- 1:05:56Like. Hogan, you just have it,
- 1:05:58brother. Have Dino Bravo jam up ultimate
- 1:06:01warrior. Then he squashes him eight times
- 1:06:04and like takes the belt off of him, right?
- 1:06:06Like and like, like you don't need.
- 1:06:07I mean, Rob was of the scepter and you know, Macho King Randy
- 1:06:12Savage. But like, I, I, I think
- 1:06:14Earthquake's fantastic here and like.
- 1:06:16I agree. He's like, when you think about
- 1:06:18it and and listen, there's probably some old school fans
- 1:06:21who will hate me for this. Yes, you could look at this as
- 1:06:26maybe Vince trying to recreate Andre and Hogan, right?
- 1:06:29Like a big man. But Earthquake can go, he can
- 1:06:33move. He is nimble.
- 1:06:35He he looks. Like $1,000,000.
- 1:06:39Like Mikey said, he doesn't goes to the top rope.
- 1:06:41It's wild, Yeah. But think about Hogan.
- 1:06:44Hogan does best when he's up against a huge threat.
- 1:06:47And it's maybe they set this the tone with Andre, like you said,
- 1:06:51Nick, but like when you have a credible threat, I'm stealing
- 1:06:55Jims verbiage because it's so perfect, but believe it for
- 1:06:58Hogan. And keep in mind, Hogan is 676.
- 1:07:008:00 and 3:00. 100 plus pounds, like it's tough to make him look
- 1:07:05like like he's the underdog and that's what they're trying to
- 1:07:07do. And that's what works best with
- 1:07:09Hogan is when he looks like he's fighting an uphill battle.
- 1:07:12Especially Hogan's coming off a WrestleMania 6 loss here too,
- 1:07:15right? Like at the previous
- 1:07:17pay-per-view, so. Oh, that's true.
- 1:07:19It's. Very believable like that.
- 1:07:22He's on the downswing. If you're a, if you're a Hulk
- 1:07:25maniac in 90, you're concerned, right?
- 1:07:27You're very concerned. If if maybe this is maybe you
- 1:07:31guys would agree or maybe not, but I think Earthquake is Hulk
- 1:07:35Hogan's most underrated opponent.
- 1:07:38I'm I, I. Like, underrated, yeah.
- 1:07:40You know, and researching, I'm like, I've definitely at least
- 1:07:43put a good chance of that being true.
- 1:07:46But if we give Earthquake the belt, it's possible we don't get
- 1:07:51smiling tag team champion Earthquake and Typhoon.
- 1:07:55Bringing like idiots? Yeah, smiling bastards don't
- 1:07:59remind me of that. Earthquake you got multiple
- 1:08:01times in this match. Earthquake, you know, he's it
- 1:08:04looks like it's looking good for Earthquake.
- 1:08:07Right, his power step to that. Except for that string hanging
- 1:08:09out of the front of his. Yeah, Come on, tuck that thing
- 1:08:12in. Quick.
- 1:08:12Tuck that string in. Earthquake forms 2.
- 1:08:17Earthquake splashes and unable to get the pinfall.
- 1:08:20Vince Clash, classic. Like it's over.
- 1:08:22He's reading Hogan's eulogy as Earthquake goes for a splash for
- 1:08:26the second time. It's it's kind of nauseating how
- 1:08:30much of a hard on Vince has for Hogan.
- 1:08:32Yeah, this is Hogan. Classic classic fish out of
- 1:08:36water cell out of Hogan here after the first the first.
- 1:08:40The first Rushmore so. This this may be his like Magnus
- 1:08:45opus or whatever he's supposed to call it Magnus opus.
- 1:08:50WrestleMania 8 might have something to say about that, but
- 1:08:53all right, I'll give you this one too.
- 1:08:56The bear hug that Earthquake has on Hogan at multiple times like
- 1:09:00it just It looks like 1,000,000 bucks and you you'd think that
- 1:09:04Earthquakes might have a chance. This match goes 13 minutes and
- 1:09:0816 seconds. According to Wikipedia, it's a.
- 1:09:11Good time. Yeah, why not?
- 1:09:13Too long. Why does before we move
- 1:09:16completely to the cans and the ending, why does Hogan shred?
- 1:09:20I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:09:22Yeah, that was my. Next point, it's by accident.
- 1:09:25No, No way. He's a prick.
- 1:09:27He's an earthquake cat. Yeah, he has his bear hug.
- 1:09:30And Hogan, just out of nowhere, rips Hebner's shirt off.
- 1:09:33Like show me those nips, brother.
- 1:09:36And it's like awkwardly, the the shirt just tears in a strange
- 1:09:39place too. I didn't grab the.
- 1:09:41Pocket like so? So what's What's happening here
- 1:09:44is Hebner's doing the classic arm lift while he's in the bear
- 1:09:47hug. And Hogan just snaps back and
- 1:09:50just, I think, grabs him by the pocket and rips at the pocket.
- 1:09:55But the entire shirt just disintegrates.
- 1:09:57And he's you've got, you've got his tit hanging out.
- 1:10:00You've got his gut hanging out. Yeah.
- 1:10:01Yeah, yeah. Poor old Earl, here is is
- 1:10:04exposed. Like truly exposed.
- 1:10:07Here, I bet, I bet Hogan beforehand was talking to Earl
- 1:10:10and he's like, brother, you've been working out lately.
- 1:10:13Like show him something. Brother, show him.
- 1:10:18I eat hot sauce, brother. I completely agree with you guys
- 1:10:22about that being random, but I think there's an even more
- 1:10:26random thing in this match and it all right, so let's go to the
- 1:10:31ending. He Hogan body slams earthquake.
- 1:10:36He then performs a leg drop on him and then Jimmy Hart
- 1:10:39interferes. Hogan throws him out of the ring
- 1:10:41and then body slams earthquake onto a table at ringside.
- 1:10:44Why is that table there? Where did it come from?
- 1:10:47Why all of a sudden at this match at the front corner of of
- 1:10:52there is a is a table covered in blue apron.
- 1:10:56I have no I'm like I'm. I'm backtracking as I'm watching
- 1:10:59this match trying to figure out where did this table come from.
- 1:11:02Why is there footage of whoever was carrying it out?
- 1:11:04Renee. Yeah.
- 1:11:05Renee Goulet. Is that his?
- 1:11:06Name. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:08And this coming from. This table falls over it.
- 1:11:13Yeah, when Hogan slams Quake on it, it makes the New Japan Pro
- 1:11:18Wrestling tables that are, like, historically sturdy.
- 1:11:21It makes it look like a twig, like this thing doesn't even
- 1:11:24budget. When Earthquake gets slammed on
- 1:11:27it and he just slides off it and falls down to the concrete, it
- 1:11:30was wild. Yeah, like it's hard to even say
- 1:11:33that table broke, right? Like it's like, it's like it
- 1:11:36like buckles or something. Yeah, it.
- 1:11:38Didn't even buckle. This thing looked like cement.
- 1:11:41Of course, Hogan gets back in the ring and wins the match via
- 1:11:44count out. Earthquake attacks Hogan after
- 1:11:47the match, but the Big Boss man saved Hogan by hitting
- 1:11:50Earthquake with a step stool. Not a chair, a step stool.
- 1:11:55And it leaves the whales in. Welts on whales back.
- 1:11:59Yeah, Oh my God. And you you see it multiple
- 1:12:03times after the match and then. He's like, still holding on
- 1:12:07Hogan. Yeah.
- 1:12:08Yeah, dude. Dude doesn't budget.
- 1:12:10He budgets less than that table. Right.
- 1:12:12Like, yes, concrete earthquake, yeah.
- 1:12:17Pete and world tables for my next.
- 1:12:19Peek, John Tenta. Peek John Tenta, what do you
- 1:12:22give this cans in the cooler? I'm going last.
- 1:12:26I'm going last because I think that.
- 1:12:28I3 and 1/4. Yeah, I'm 3 1/2.
- 1:12:32I have 3 1/2 as well. Yeah, I think this is one of the
- 1:12:35better Hogan mattress. Agree.
- 1:12:38Sarah, go ahead. Maybe if it didn't end in the
- 1:12:40count out, but. No, I like it though.
- 1:12:42It's smart booking though because it keeps tend to looking
- 1:12:44good, you know? This is 4 cans in the cooler.
- 1:12:48This was so much fun. So much fun.
- 1:12:51I feel like it barely touched on some of the entertaining pieces
- 1:12:55of this match. Like this is a top tier Hogan
- 1:12:58match in my 1. 100% I agree that.
- 1:13:00Really goes to show how much Earthquake was underrated
- 1:13:05because you sure you think of Earthquake being one of those
- 1:13:08main rivals for Hogan, but this match delivered and the crowd,
- 1:13:12which has kind of been engaged all night, like I wouldn't call
- 1:13:15them a phenomenal crowd up until this point.
- 1:13:19They absolutely explode for everything and anything that
- 1:13:23they're doing in this match. And Hogan has them eating out of
- 1:13:25the palm of their hand and it's a ton of fun.
- 1:13:29Meltzer gave it 2 1/4 being an asshole I guess.
- 1:13:33He's a little. He's poisoned from the previous
- 1:13:35matches though. Too negative.
- 1:13:36Sure, sure, but this is so much fun to watch.
- 1:13:39Like yeah, I agree, good entertaining Hogan match.
- 1:13:42Not a work rate that you're not going to find work rate
- 1:13:44throughout 1990, but. Work rate.
- 1:13:46It's not bad, though it's not I. Think it's I think it's AI think
- 1:13:50it's actually really important that Jimmy Hart, Dino Bravo and
- 1:13:54Big Boss Man are involved in this match because it's what you
- 1:13:58want to see. Like I especially watching back,
- 1:14:01I don't want to see Hogan carrying a match like like
- 1:14:03that's all the Hogan matches are.
- 1:14:05It's Hogan and a bad guy and Hogan going over and this is,
- 1:14:09you know, I would have liked a more clean finish maybe, but I I
- 1:14:14agree, it was a lot of fun. Let's I wonder how this is
- 1:14:17regarded. If it's go ahead.
- 1:14:18No. No, no, go ahead.
- 1:14:20I was just going to say I wonder how this is regarded if it
- 1:14:22finished the card, which maybe it should have.
- 1:14:25That's another really great point.
- 1:14:26Like if this was the main, and I understand trying to, you know,
- 1:14:29we're going to get to Warrior in a minute and trying to put the
- 1:14:32company on his back with Hogan faltering and yadda, yadda,
- 1:14:34yadda. But like it goes to show that
- 1:14:37the crowd wasn't ready for that. Like this was this was Hogan's
- 1:14:40show still. But I think another thing that
- 1:14:43goes kind of unmentioned as we're talking through this is,
- 1:14:47you know, this is the era where there is no big video package.
- 1:14:50And for us rewatching this in 2025, what 35 years later, we
- 1:14:55have Hogan's promo here. That Constitution promo started
- 1:14:59out with him telling the back story of this match.
- 1:15:02And I felt like I understood what was happening and all the
- 1:15:05minutiae of the Tugboat and the Boss man and, you know,
- 1:15:08Earthquake and all of these things that were going on.
- 1:15:10It made me feel like I was more invested in the match and maybe
- 1:15:14that showed in my 4 cans and the cooler rating here.
- 1:15:17I just really enjoyed taking this in as peak 1990.
- 1:15:21To me, this match is summer like is a summer Slam match like this
- 1:15:26is what you want to see out of your summer Slam matches like
- 1:15:30you want to see a fun ending, You want to see multiple people
- 1:15:33involved. It's it's a lot of fun.
- 1:15:35It's it's. Like the main event I think.
- 1:15:38Yeah, that's. Probably true.
- 1:15:40Yeah, it's. Not even the main technically.
- 1:15:43He's definitely one of the most underrated heels in the
- 1:15:46business. You got to give him an insane
- 1:15:48amount of credit, I think. I mean, Hogan's Hogan.
- 1:15:50I, I, you know how I feel about Hogan on this show.
- 1:15:53But like, he Earthquake's a perfect foil for the guy.
- 1:15:57He's not just a big guy. He's a big guy who can go,
- 1:15:59right? And that's a big difference
- 1:16:01between him versus King Kong Bundy at WrestleMania 2.
- 1:16:04No offense to King Kong Bundy, but this guy can move.
- 1:16:08He goes to the top rope and he like, he looks athletic.
- 1:16:11He's athletic. That's what he is.
- 1:16:12And he's a sumo wrestler, right? Like he's a legit athlete who
- 1:16:16can go. And it really, it pops off the
- 1:16:18screen this match. It's surprising.
- 1:16:20I think that's what it is too, right?
- 1:16:21Like for a Hogan match, he used to like the usual tropes of a
- 1:16:25Hogan match, the the formula. But this thing is.
- 1:16:28This thing is. Good.
- 1:16:29It looks it's fun. No clean finish.
- 1:16:31Like you said, a perfect summer time man Step stools, Yeah.
- 1:16:36All of this earthquake love is making me go on eBay right now
- 1:16:39and looking at earthquake hasbros.
- 1:16:42Yeah, no, one more. One more thing.
- 1:16:45An earthquake. Sadly we're we're like fantasy
- 1:16:47booking him into slaughter spot WrestleMania 7.
- 1:16:51Unfortunately, he ends up facing like Greg the Hammer Valentine
- 1:16:54in like a 32nd squash match. Somewhere in the very bowels of
- 1:16:58the card at the end, you know. It's towards the end.
- 1:17:01Oh God. Yeah.
- 1:17:02Does the same thing to Adam Baum at WrestleMania 10.
- 1:17:05Yeah, yeah. And then he's in like an idiot.
- 1:17:09It up. Vince kept him around though,
- 1:17:11for a while. When you think about it,
- 1:17:13oddities. He always came back.
- 1:17:14Yeah. All right, moving on to our main
- 1:17:20event of the night. But before we get there, we've
- 1:17:22got a new look. Ravishing Rick Rude backstage
- 1:17:25with Bobby the Brain Heenan and. His last pay-per-view.
- 1:17:29This Yeah, this guy looks like 1,000,000 bucks.
- 1:17:33He's got a new haircut. He ditched the long like perm
- 1:17:37look, but he his physique. I mean, you look at ravishing
- 1:17:43recruit and I wonder why this guy was never again shot to the
- 1:17:49moon like you know. He had almost disagreement with
- 1:17:53Vince, I think. Yeah.
- 1:17:54Oh, OK. Not surprising.
- 1:17:58Because I Yeah, he barely like does much over the next year,
- 1:18:03which is when his contract runs out in 91.
- 1:18:06Then he goes really W yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:09I didn't know that. Just like he's on the bench,
- 1:18:11basically. Yeah, pretty much He wanted to
- 1:18:13like run out his contract because some like money
- 1:18:16disagreement over this event too.
- 1:18:19Like he he was like I I'm not getting paid enough for like
- 1:18:22main eventing. Fair enough.
- 1:18:26They they're basically running a ton of backstage BS because they
- 1:18:32can't get that cage up fast enough for the main event.
- 1:18:36Which is kind of ridiculous how long it takes them back in 1990
- 1:18:41to put up the Big Blue cage. Well, as as his Lordship Alfred
- 1:18:45Hayes explains, the erectors, you know, he calls them, he
- 1:18:50calls it the erectors. I was like, what?
- 1:18:52What? What?
- 1:18:53Yeah, the erectors. What did he say?
- 1:18:55I think my wife woke up for that part too.
- 1:18:57The first thing she hears. Oh dude dude rectals like what?
- 1:19:01Like a fuck. First time we're seeing Lauren
- 1:19:03Alfred Hayes freaking ass on the screen.
- 1:19:06Oh my God, we got a Dusty Rhodes promo calling out $1,000,000
- 1:19:09man. Again, just bidding their time
- 1:19:12as these guys are lugging this giant cage down to the ring.
- 1:19:17Feels down emotions. And the to again, though, but I
- 1:19:25feel like, OK, so this is the the forever battle that will
- 1:19:31follow Hogan and Warrior is the fact that this match just ended,
- 1:19:37Warriors getting to go on. And before we can even get
- 1:19:41there, we have to hear from Hogan again, right as as Lord
- 1:19:46Alfred Hayes is telling the Scream.
- 1:19:49But then we get Hogan and he's back there with his demandments
- 1:19:53and telling us to believe in ourselves, and he's talking
- 1:19:56about buying a surfboard. We got a sad dusty before that
- 1:19:59though. Earthquake proof buildings,
- 1:20:02right? He's gonna be Quake.
- 1:20:04Yeah, again. Yeah.
- 1:20:05Gonna be earthquake. It's gonna.
- 1:20:07Can I? Can I?
- 1:20:08Play it. Yeah, please.
- 1:20:09I'm gonna play what I labeled as the surf promo.
- 1:20:12And right now I'm getting a new 9 foot gun made brother, a brand
- 1:20:17new surfboard with a 2 1/2 foot scag.
- 1:20:20And I'm going to go out to Venice Beach and I'm going to
- 1:20:22chase each and every shark I can find.
- 1:20:24And when I find the biggest wave I can find, I'm going to catch
- 1:20:27that tidal wave brother. I said tidal wave and I'm going
- 1:20:31to ride it right to the top. What you going to do?
- 1:20:34WWF, Earthquake and Jack Honey and anybody else in my way.
- 1:20:40I don't mention Tony. Tony.
- 1:20:43Yeah, he's getting like he thinks the politics are against
- 1:20:45him. This is this is probably the
- 1:20:49most giftable, if that's actually a word, Romo of all
- 1:20:53time, because this is the one where Hogan does the backstroke
- 1:20:57out of frame and it's. No, you're thinking of.
- 1:21:00No, you're thinking of wrong promo.
- 1:21:02Wrong promo. Yeah, this ones that he does the
- 1:21:05motorcycle out of the back of the page engine, engine and he
- 1:21:11does, he does the whole yeah, I blew it.
- 1:21:18I said Piper Wave. But again, then then after that
- 1:21:22promo, we're we're killing more time.
- 1:21:24We've got to listen to Piper and Vince like.
- 1:21:27Is he saying about title wave like the title the WWE?
- 1:21:32Title. Well, you just pick up on that.
- 1:21:34Yes, I swear. I said title waves.
- 1:21:40My God, I can't believe I didn't think of that so.
- 1:21:42What do you think? Why do you think he was like,
- 1:21:44you know, emphasizing it? Just saying tidal wave like.
- 1:21:49Like you have. To wave God.
- 1:21:52Pronunciation. We have more looks at the the
- 1:21:57stage crew setting up this this giant.
- 1:22:00Dude, they're called it erectors, right?
- 1:22:03They're erecting it and then we get earthquake Dino Bravo and
- 1:22:07Jimmy Hart backstage once more with Sean Mooney.
- 1:22:11This is this is taking a long time to put up the the steel
- 1:22:15cage and I've got a. Problem says the erectors do it
- 1:22:18as their record was 8 minutes and 42 seconds and this sucker
- 1:22:22weighs over 3000 lbs but this feels like an hour.
- 1:22:26It feels it. Feels like forever.
- 1:22:28What do you say? What do you say They're.
- 1:22:30What did you say? They're a record.
- 1:22:32I'm sorry, I fucked it up. What did you say?
- 1:22:35Their their erectored was. I can't even say it.
- 1:22:38I can't. It's in 42 seconds for the
- 1:22:41erectors. That's my record.
- 1:22:44All right, so after after we get Dino Bravo looking like a real
- 1:22:48idiot back there. I don't even know what he
- 1:22:49blabbers on like Fred Flintstone.
- 1:22:52We finally Dino Bravo. Talked.
- 1:22:54I didn't even have that in my smoking a clamble.
- 1:22:59Turkish gold. We're finally about ready for
- 1:23:03the main event, but before we do, we've got Ultimate Warrior
- 1:23:07backstage with me and Gene. And I realized with this strap
- 1:23:11that he wears with this blue strap, do you think he like
- 1:23:14unscrewed all those things and spray painted that thing
- 1:23:16himself? Because it is not clean.
- 1:23:18No way. A clean blue strap.
- 1:23:21Which are surprised, but you didn't know what he's what he
- 1:23:25how many different color titles does this guy have?
- 1:23:28Yeah, what? What?
- 1:23:29Yellow for Matt? You might know.
- 1:23:31Matt. Matt.
- 1:23:32Earmuffs, Matt. Yeah.
- 1:23:34Earmuffs you. Didn't hear that question.
- 1:23:35You didn't hear that question? I, I hate this guy.
- 1:23:39I, I, I, I legitimately hate The Ultimate Warrior.
- 1:23:43I am putting him up on my Mount Rushmore of wrestlers that I
- 1:23:47hate with the Bushwhackers, Hacksaw Jim Duggan and The
- 1:23:51Ultimate Warrior and. Goldberg.
- 1:23:53And Goldberg, Yeah. Nicholas, if you could erase if
- 1:23:56you could erase one from history.
- 1:23:58Goldberg or Ultimate Warrior? Who is it?
- 1:24:00Oh, Goldberg, Easily. Wow.
- 1:24:01All right. Yeah.
- 1:24:02All right. Because Nicholas.
- 1:24:04Yes, Nicholas. Go ask yourself.
- 1:24:09Where's face paint is peeling off of his face as he's
- 1:24:12blabbering on about the Liberty Bell.
- 1:24:16Like can I play it? This is this is not to play.
- 1:24:20I I love, love that Ultimate Warrior, I think is trying to
- 1:24:24make a joke here. Jim may say otherwise, but I
- 1:24:27think he's trying to make a. Joke Do you know what Rick Rude
- 1:24:30and Bobby Enan have in common with the Liberty Bell?
- 1:24:35Well, no. One is cracked and the other is
- 1:24:40a Ding Dong I. Love.
- 1:24:49Gene's reaction so good there. Everyone that's ever seen that
- 1:24:53needs to go watch it because Gene sells like he is about to
- 1:24:56die if he does not laugh at this or or joke The Ultimate Warrior.
- 1:25:03It's not bad if it's Warriors trying to be like, I'm not
- 1:25:06funny, but but it's so weird. It's like he's doing the Hogan
- 1:25:08thing sort of. I don't know.
- 1:25:10Yeah, it does, definitely. Feel the whole warrior.
- 1:25:13Warrior. You could like speculate, but
- 1:25:16like the warrior warriors introduction and like title
- 1:25:21reign was too close to Hogan's title reign almost.
- 1:25:24But at the same time, like if you went further on in the 90s,
- 1:25:29like clearly as we covered in King Ring 96, Warrior would not
- 1:25:33be able to hang. Like, so I don't know, like it
- 1:25:37feels like he should have been over down in the South somewhere
- 1:25:41and maybe would have had more success down there.
- 1:25:44Warrior is such an interesting thing because you have to go
- 1:25:48back to like how you felt then, right?
- 1:25:50Like, and he, he's, he's a huge deal.
- 1:25:53Like he was a huge deal. Like in hindsight, it's.
- 1:25:56He are Goldberg, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:25:58Like you believe. Yeah.
- 1:25:59You believed in like, like, how destructive of a force he was,
- 1:26:04right. Like, he was more unbeatable, I
- 1:26:07think, in my mind, than Hogan. Like I'd be more afraid of him
- 1:26:10going against my favorite guy than Hogan I think.
- 1:26:14That's that's fair. Yeah.
- 1:26:15No, no, no, that's fair. Because he was a lunatic.
- 1:26:18Yeah, exactly. And on top of it, the gear, the
- 1:26:21color, the face paint was. Bad at that down the aisle, you
- 1:26:24know? Now, so one of the things they
- 1:26:27talk about on Prichard is how at this event, like leading up to
- 1:26:30this, was when Warrior decided out of nowhere he was gonna
- 1:26:33change his face paint, right? Like leading up to this he had
- 1:26:37the solid color, like it was like 3 solid colors.
- 1:26:41Like, you know, like a black and then a pink inside and then a
- 1:26:44green inside. Now he started to introduce like
- 1:26:48the the polka dots and the lines inside.
- 1:26:50And apparently that was because he was so self-conscious of him
- 1:26:57and Texas Tornado being compared to one another and looking so
- 1:27:02similar that he wanted, he thought that would be things
- 1:27:05that would separate him from Texas Tornado, which is
- 1:27:08interesting because Texas tornado doesn't wear face paint,
- 1:27:12yes. You don't have to say that is
- 1:27:20fantastic. But like, it's, I mean, it's
- 1:27:24true. Don't get me wrong.
- 1:27:25As a kid, I remember thinking as soon as I told a Texas tornado,
- 1:27:28I was like, oh, this guy looks exactly like The Ultimate
- 1:27:30Warrior. You know, between the physique,
- 1:27:32the hair, the the gear, like the tassels on the boots.
- 1:27:39I think this is the warrior. It's AI think it's a tough spot
- 1:27:42for Warrior also because they're putting him up against Rick
- 1:27:45Rude, right? He too had like an iconic feud
- 1:27:48for the Intercontinental title. And like, to me, I watch this
- 1:27:53match and I, I feel like it's for the Intercontinental title.
- 1:27:56I don't feel like it's for the main championship.
- 1:27:59Like great way to put it. I can't remove myself from that.
- 1:28:02Yeah, it, it totally makes sense.
- 1:28:04And when you definitely, when you think about Warrior and
- 1:28:08Rude, you think about the Intercontinental title, you
- 1:28:11don't think about the heavyweight title.
- 1:28:13That's a really great point that I didn't think of.
- 1:28:15And it definitely takes its goal on this match.
- 1:28:17Although you know, spoiler alert, I do enjoy this match and
- 1:28:20I think it's in the contention of Warriors Best match between
- 1:28:25this and Mania 7. Like those are the only two.
- 1:28:28I have that in my notes. It's this, this, and it's like
- 1:28:31those are one and two, one and two.
- 1:28:33Yeah, I don't think this goes above 7, but this is definitely
- 1:28:37enjoyable. But we'll, we'll get there.
- 1:28:41I do love warriors gear. He's got like the black trunks
- 1:28:44with a lot of the neon green and pink and blue in there.
- 1:28:49It's just it again. It just feels like it it it's
- 1:28:54one of those feuds that just. Yeah, I think you could.
- 1:28:58They're too. Close in timeline to each.
- 1:29:01Other they're doing a disservice to them like too, you could
- 1:29:04probably, if you did research on this, I'm sure there's a million
- 1:29:07guys who won the title and they like kind of like maybe we made
- 1:29:10a mistake and they kind of like, you know, kind of run it down
- 1:29:15and put it in bad spots. I'm thinking of like, you know,
- 1:29:18Jericho versus Triple H at the WrestleMania, which follows a
- 1:29:21Hogan essentially. I know there's a a women's title
- 1:29:24match in between, but like this match coming off of the
- 1:29:26Earthquake Hogan match, they're not doing it any favors
- 1:29:29whatsoever. Why not put that other match way
- 1:29:33earlier in the night and throw in friggin Badmuth Brown or the
- 1:29:36Nikolai Volkoff match? Even the Saturday night more
- 1:29:38event treatment. Yes, exactly.
- 1:29:41Like you got a space these double main event and Hogan's
- 1:29:44got the promo basically in the middle.
- 1:29:46You know, like in the beginning of this match, like.
- 1:29:48It's. It's not really fair, I don't
- 1:29:50think. But it's it's it's kind of a
- 1:29:52microcosm for the title brain, too, you know.
- 1:29:54You know, he takes it off of Hogan and then he's got to
- 1:29:57follow Hogan. But yet they put him in the main
- 1:30:01event of a pay-per-view and he still has to follow Hogan.
- 1:30:05Like, there was no time for, you know, Hogan to go away,
- 1:30:10essentially. And sure, yeah, there was times
- 1:30:12that he was in and out, but like, he was never truly given
- 1:30:15the ball. And it's also tough to go from
- 1:30:18babyface champion to babyface champion, especially when it's,
- 1:30:22you know, through the 8 year old lens of of us.
- 1:30:25Like it was just more of the same.
- 1:30:28And how do you compare anything to Hulk Hogan?
- 1:30:31Anyone in that position would have probably been set up to
- 1:30:33fail unless they had this, you know, this buffer transition.
- 1:30:40Yeah, Yeah, Hogan holds. Up a warrior does the same
- 1:30:42thing. I guess at the end of the day,
- 1:30:44like the, the proof's in the pudding, right?
- 1:30:46Like, 'cause I know they ran the A house show and the B house
- 1:30:48show and wanted Hogan at the top, wanted Warrior at the top
- 1:30:51and the Hogan one killed and the Warrior one didn't.
- 1:30:54So I mean, like the end of the day, that's, you know, unique
- 1:30:58business. Perfect.
- 1:30:59Sense like think about it if you're like, hey, you love this
- 1:31:04but now we want you to love this like it's never gonna work It's
- 1:31:08it's. Similar formula, just this guy
- 1:31:10looks like an absolute maniac and runs around like a
- 1:31:13psychopath. And on top of it, like that's
- 1:31:16the other thing too, Warrior, Warrior doesn't sell as well as
- 1:31:21Hogan does. Like Hogan.
- 1:31:24Hogan like sells over the top like but Warrior I feel like
- 1:31:29just immediately rises to his feet almost every time.
- 1:31:32Hogan's on the Mount Rushmore. Fish out of water it's not.
- 1:31:36Warrior is as far as you can be from that, right?
- 1:31:39Yes, I don't know. He he kind of humped the mat a
- 1:31:42couple of times. A.
- 1:31:44Few times if he's in a. Casket, or if he's in a snake
- 1:31:48den or whatever the hell you call it.
- 1:31:50Don't. Don't remind me.
- 1:31:52The the match. Listen, we're not going to sit
- 1:31:55here and breakdown move by move unless anybody has a spot.
- 1:31:59That they want to talk about. Let's go.
- 1:32:00Let's talk about the stripper music.
- 1:32:02Yes, yes, we did not OK, we did not talk about that.
- 1:32:06And I listen if you were to breakdown the four of us and how
- 1:32:10we record how we prepare for this you know like Typic, it's
- 1:32:16usually Mike or I who are usually the first ones to watch
- 1:32:20what we're sign for homework. I watch this and I I must have
- 1:32:23texted you guys like everything I wait.
- 1:32:26Did anybody watch Rick Rude's entrance?
- 1:32:28Did anybody watch it is forget about the music?
- 1:32:34It's it's completely dubbed. It's like the first thing that
- 1:32:37they dubbed over on the WWE Network is get rid of music and
- 1:32:42you you can't hear anything behind it.
- 1:32:45Right. It's like stripper music from
- 1:32:46the 40s. But yes, but on top of that,
- 1:32:48it's not Rick Rude's music. You don't hear any crowd noise.
- 1:32:52You don't hear any. The commentary is.
- 1:32:54Like wartime era stripping, it's.
- 1:32:56Muffled because if you can't hear anything and and rude like
- 1:33:03it it it it doesn't war done. If you look up on Spotify, it's
- 1:33:07not Jim Johnston, it's actually the erectors who performed that.
- 1:33:13Yeah, I'll hit it again for anybody that wants to.
- 1:33:18But it's the it's no joke, but it's, it's not even war music.
- 1:33:21It's the fact the way that it's dubbed over is so poorly done.
- 1:33:26They didn't play with their levels.
- 1:33:28Yeah, it's like the first thing that they ever dubbed over a
- 1:33:31music. Yeah, that was pretty bad.
- 1:33:34It was awful. It takes it like it's.
- 1:33:38It takes you out of the moment too.
- 1:33:39I. Think.
- 1:33:40Oh yes. I agree the match goes 10
- 1:33:42minutes and 5 seconds. It's like you said to me and I
- 1:33:47have in my notes. It's funny you said it.
- 1:33:49This is number 2 behind Warrior and Macho Man at WrestleMania 7
- 1:33:54as Ultimate Warriors best match in WWF.
- 1:33:58At WrestleMania 12. In WrestleMania 6.
- 1:34:01Yeah, I think, I think I'm with Mikey on that one.
- 1:34:03I. Don't know I would put this I
- 1:34:06think. Maybe third?
- 1:34:08Crowning perspective you know, Hogan and Warrior, but I I
- 1:34:12really enjoyed this match. I thought they were told a good
- 1:34:14story of, you know, the trying to escape the cage and, you
- 1:34:18know, Bobby Heenan makes his way into the cage at one point and
- 1:34:21pays the price and, you know, Hogan warriors going for the
- 1:34:25door and Heenan slams it on his head.
- 1:34:28And Rick Rude gets busted open in this match too.
- 1:34:31Like there's there's a lot of fun things that I found
- 1:34:34throughout this match that made me want to actually go back in
- 1:34:38and pay closer attention to the to the move by move and a lot of
- 1:34:42it goes to Rick Rude. Obviously Rude is pass off for
- 1:34:45the majority of this this match, but there's a lot of fun spots
- 1:34:49in a classic big cage kind of way where guys are trying to
- 1:34:53climb up and Rick the other one pulls them down and so on so
- 1:34:56forth. Rick Rude goes off the top of of
- 1:34:59the cage, climbs the corner and goes off the top corner.
- 1:35:03That was like one of those things that I did not remember
- 1:35:05happening. And then he goes and does it a
- 1:35:07second time from the opposite corner.
- 1:35:10He doesn't go as high up. He's probably like, oh shit,
- 1:35:12what did I get? Myself.
- 1:35:13Into but he still goes pretty high up and I was like wow, I
- 1:35:17did not have that on my bingo card.
- 1:35:19He's one of those perfect dance partners for a warrior type, you
- 1:35:23know? They kind of talked about
- 1:35:26Pritchard and Conrad on their podcast.
- 1:35:29They talk about how Rude never really had a guy in WWF like he
- 1:35:35Heenan was like the closest that he had or Perfect because he and
- 1:35:39Perfect are both Minnesota guys. Like a buddy behind the scenes,
- 1:35:43yeah. Like he never really Rick Rude
- 1:35:45never had that solid like buddy backstage and and and Conrad and
- 1:35:51and Pritchard kind of allude to that being part of the reason
- 1:35:55why he never really fully succeeded in WWF, which would
- 1:36:00kind of make sense like. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:36:03Him and Perfect were close, like maybe that came later on a
- 1:36:07little bit. Again, I think that's the
- 1:36:08Minnesota connection. Like those two, it was.
- 1:36:11It was the two of them that. It's that's the, that's the
- 1:36:15extra cooler show tip for graduates, right?
- 1:36:18Like get along, get along with your colleagues.
- 1:36:20You go places there. You go try, try for everybody.
- 1:36:24Warriors face paint is peeling off as as it did in episode 1 of
- 1:36:29the Extra Cooler Show of Warrior.
- 1:36:31Versus and that clip you showed, he did have the Whitehead
- 1:36:34nipples, the Whitehead nipples. They were ready to be popped.
- 1:36:38The nipples are on the the Mount Rushmore of this show I believe.
- 1:36:41Right, like we they put. Both of them one and two.
- 1:36:44Both of them one and two. Yeah, you can even duplicate
- 1:36:46them. I don't know who else, but also
- 1:36:48there's a spot where where Rick Rude goes to climb out of the
- 1:36:52cage and he's going to exit the door and Warrior goes and pulls
- 1:36:57his pants down and Warrior does like a full pull down like Rick
- 1:37:02Rude's balls. It's like the word definitely in
- 1:37:05Warrior's face. You can't be putting the ground
- 1:37:08on like no cheese. He's like, I definitely went too
- 1:37:10far. And he pulls his pants back.
- 1:37:14He definitely had a full view of Rick Rude's butthole, that is
- 1:37:17for sure. Taint who tainters?
- 1:37:21Just grundle? What's the term?
- 1:37:22Is this the same thing they're? Interchangeable they're.
- 1:37:26Interchangeable. My wife would say.
- 1:37:28It's called the perineum like. She's in the medical field, so
- 1:37:32yeah, yeah, sure. I trust her.
- 1:37:37He takes an atomic drop as well. It's who do you?
- 1:37:40Think of who do you think of pantsed more in their career?
- 1:37:43There's some homework for you, yeah.
- 1:37:44Right. I was kidding.
- 1:37:47Rick Root or Michaels? Yeah.
- 1:37:49Ought to be up. It's close.
- 1:37:51I asked Vince McMahon. He probably has a written down.
- 1:37:54Somewhere. Oh, yeah.
- 1:37:55Oh, yeah, yeah, I think I check, check.
- 1:37:59Let me see that. Let me see.
- 1:38:01That looks good. I think the problem with warrior
- 1:38:09as you watch the end of this match is it is it is a carbon
- 1:38:14copy of Hogan and hulking up like the the shaking of the
- 1:38:18ropes, the the raising of the hands.
- 1:38:21Like to me, that's that's the problem where I can't remove
- 1:38:24myself from how it just feels like he.
- 1:38:27Is. Like shaking the ropes.
- 1:38:31Yeah. Same thing.
- 1:38:32And and the fact that and, and again, I hate the leg drop.
- 1:38:35The leg drop is a terrible famous move, but he lifts him up
- 1:38:39for a gorilla press slam. Gorilla Press slams Rick Rude in
- 1:38:42the middle of the ring and then just climbs the blue cage goes
- 1:38:46over the top and we have a winner and Ultimate War retains
- 1:38:50like. No drama, no drama this is.
- 1:38:52My complaints about this match, the ending, it's very
- 1:38:55lackluster. And don't get me wrong.
- 1:38:57Expecting rude to like at least grab him or something.
- 1:38:59Through the well, that's that's the problem with our our current
- 1:39:02mind and set is that there's too many false finishes.
- 1:39:06But back then there was like, is there not enough false finish?
- 1:39:09I needed like 1. I needed one.
- 1:39:11There was not one. There was not one point in this
- 1:39:15match where I felt like Rick Rude had a chance.
- 1:39:19Yeah, no, that's that's a great way to put it.
- 1:39:22He was not a credible, he was not a credible threat like
- 1:39:25Tensa. No, I guess there's the times
- 1:39:28where Heenan comes in and you're feeling like, OK, now, you know,
- 1:39:32Rude's going to have the upper hand and it's his way of, you
- 1:39:34know, getting out. But you're right, he never gets
- 1:39:37like that false finish. I'm going to escape.
- 1:39:39Except for maybe when he had his grundle out but other than that
- 1:39:43like you're right. But at the end you know he hits
- 1:39:47the gorilla press slam and he goes over the top.
- 1:39:49I enjoy the fact that this is a over the top and not through the
- 1:39:53door finish. I always prefer that personally.
- 1:39:56And you get. You get Rick Rude selling pretty
- 1:39:59well at the end when, you know, Warriors, of course, like 9/10
- 1:40:04of the way out of the ring already.
- 1:40:05But Rick Rude gets up and he's stumbling, can't get his feet
- 1:40:09underneath them. And you know, there's definitely
- 1:40:11a way where he falls into the ropes.
- 1:40:13Like there's some good selling that's going on.
- 1:40:15But I understand the criticism of it not being a, you know, a
- 1:40:19credible threat, that's for sure.
- 1:40:21I think I think the hardest part for me, and a lot of this is my
- 1:40:25own personal thing, it's hard for me to watch these matches
- 1:40:28with a lens like I have no clue what happens, you know what I
- 1:40:32mean? Like, like, you know, the way
- 1:40:35that Warriors title run goes like, so it's hard for you to be
- 1:40:39like, oh, there's a chance Rick Root has a chance.
- 1:40:43Just like it's hard to watch the Hogan match and be like,
- 1:40:46Earthquake has a chance. You know, I would love to have
- 1:40:51been like a kid and, and, and be able to think of it through that
- 1:40:55mindset of thinking like maybe Rick Rude did have a chance,
- 1:40:59but. Well, you know what?
- 1:41:00We just talked about this in the King of the Ring episode, the
- 1:41:04Michaels verse British Bulldog match where that came after
- 1:41:08WrestleMania. So British Bulldog was the
- 1:41:09cannon fodder after WrestleMania.
- 1:41:11Yeah, and this is after WrestleMania as far as paper
- 1:41:13reviews go, right? True.
- 1:41:15So Rude is in that cannon fodder position.
- 1:41:17He's not going to. I mean, it's, it's, they're
- 1:41:18still, they're still how many years in and they're still doing
- 1:41:21it. We're at WrestleMania 41.
- 1:41:24That's still the formula. It is what it is.
- 1:41:26Like you can't, you can't do that.
- 1:41:28No, it's like I don't. Know give it give this Cannes in
- 1:41:31the cooler Warrior versus Rick Rude at.
- 1:41:33Some running the bank the main event.
- 1:41:36Well, now, yeah, I. I I gave it 3 1/2 just like
- 1:41:41Hogan and and Mike I had I, I enjoyed it.
- 1:41:45I don't listen. It's not again, it's it for me.
- 1:41:50I have a hard time and maybe it's my own personal ranking
- 1:41:53system. Like if it's a match that I
- 1:41:56haven't watched a lot of, like I enjoyed watching Rick Rude in
- 1:42:00this match, maybe a three is a better justification.
- 1:42:05But based on when I watched this match a month ago, I have a 3
- 1:42:081/2 written down. I, I gave it a 3 1/2 as well and
- 1:42:11I thought I was going to be the high man on the totem pole here.
- 1:42:13Like I didn't expect the way that you spoke about this match
- 1:42:17and the way that you threw shaded that warrior.
- 1:42:19I had no expectation of it being anywhere near that, to be honest
- 1:42:23with you, but I'm I'm right there with you.
- 1:42:24It's not. Of course I went above and
- 1:42:26beyond with Hogan. I enjoyed the Hogan shtick of it
- 1:42:29all. I I did and this I enjoyed the
- 1:42:32warrior of it all and Rick Rude even more so.
- 1:42:35But I gave it 3 1/2 and Meltzer gave it 2 1/2.
- 1:42:39Yeah, I'm like A275I. I've really enjoyed the previous
- 1:42:42match for some reason. Again, I'm not a Hogan guy, so
- 1:42:45that really popped for me. But this one, I don't know, it
- 1:42:48just kind of felt flat to me. And the ending in particular,
- 1:42:52just I would watch it like the endings.
- 1:42:54Definitely recommend checking it out.
- 1:42:56But like it's just, I don't, I don't think it deserves the main
- 1:42:59event status that it has. No, I think it is.
- 1:43:02Higher than an intercontinental. Tier.
- 1:43:04That's it. That's I think you said it best
- 1:43:05when you said that, when you put it that way.
- 1:43:09Yeah, I agree with pretty much what Jim said.
- 1:43:13I gave it a three like 3 and a quarter.
- 1:43:16The ending was just ruined it kind of for me a little bit.
- 1:43:21Just how like you kind of feel like insignificant.
- 1:43:24Yeah, yeah. You know, when we watch these
- 1:43:27matches, like especially this, right?
- 1:43:29We were, we were what, 8 years old, approaching 8 years old.
- 1:43:34Like I always watch it through that lens.
- 1:43:37I feel like and and this especially like an event that I
- 1:43:41didn't watch live. I watched a lot after and like,
- 1:43:44I don't know if it was when we were recorded or before we were
- 1:43:47recorded. Like whenever we would watch
- 1:43:50this pay-per-view and rewatch it in college, like Jim talked
- 1:43:54about, we would rarely make it to this main event because past
- 1:43:58the Warrior promo, there was nothing like that appealing.
- 1:44:01Yeah, You know, she puts nothing that funny.
- 1:44:02Well, you put it on at the end of the at night at the bar or
- 1:44:05something like that. You know, like it's just.
- 1:44:08You watch the Warrior, trust me. In Sapphire, you watch.
- 1:44:10Yeah, the promos. Oh yeah.
- 1:44:13It's you. This is at the end of the card.
- 1:44:15You barely make that part. Warrior.
- 1:44:17Is just a. Warrior is an interesting guy,
- 1:44:20man, and we could dive deep and like, but we would be saying a
- 1:44:24lot of things that people said. But what I was getting at is I
- 1:44:27would love to know the perspective of people that watch
- 1:44:32wrestling that like grew up as Hogan guys and say they were
- 1:44:36like 18, like 20s in their 30s in their 40s and older that
- 1:44:40liked Hogan. Like I can't imagine those
- 1:44:43people getting behind Carbon Copy in Ultimate War who was
- 1:44:47like the same exact thing but with a little bit of a like
- 1:44:51jazzier outfit. I feel like he's very like
- 1:44:55Warriors millennial and Hogan is Gen.
- 1:44:57X almost like I feel like there's a slight generation
- 1:45:01difference right there. Like you can like they splinter
- 1:45:03off there I think but I could be wrong pulling that on my ass.
- 1:45:07I mean, listen, look at it. Look at it like whether you're
- 1:45:11whether you grew up as a Hogan guy or a Warrior guy, I don't
- 1:45:14think anybody is walking back and be like, I love these guys.
- 1:45:18Like kids, especially like our generation with again, whether
- 1:45:22you're Hogan or Warrior guy, you're not like I still love
- 1:45:24Warrior. He's got the best matches or
- 1:45:26Hogan had the best matches back in the 90s.
- 1:45:29Like, you know, nobody. 'S Matt's got the face paint
- 1:45:32with the crisscross stuff on right now.
- 1:45:33That's what you're talking about.
- 1:45:34Mr. Perfect was my favorite guy. You.
- 1:45:38That's the 217th time you've mentioned that.
- 1:45:43All right, so ready. So let's let's rewind.
- 1:45:45Let's take Part 1 into account and Part 2 into account and give
- 1:45:50the entire Summer Slam 1990 cans in the cooler.
- 1:45:54Jim, you're going first because this was your event. 5.25 cans
- 1:45:59oh shit. I love this card.
- 1:46:01It's great. It's like the ultimate comfort
- 1:46:03food, wrestling comfort food. I think I, I didn't, I it's
- 1:46:07funny because it's the one that transcends like not having seen
- 1:46:12it as a kid, you know, like I think it's so good, but it feels
- 1:46:16like one of those WrestleMania 7 type cards.
- 1:46:19I think where it like really speaks to the kid in me and I
- 1:46:22like it's very nostalgic and it's comfort food and it's
- 1:46:25something like, are the matches bangers?
- 1:46:28Some of them are actually like Heart Foundation versus
- 1:46:31Demolition, Earthquake versus Hogan, like it's got a little
- 1:46:35bit of everything and it's a blast to watch and it's only two
- 1:46:38hours and 40 minutes or whatever it is and highly recommend.
- 1:46:42Mike, what do you got? All right, so I split it up.
- 1:46:45I'm I gave it like a moment's 4 1/2 cans and matches like 3 1/2.
- 1:46:53So I, I guess like we'll split it down the middle and give it a
- 1:46:57four total, Matt. I'm at 4 there.
- 1:47:05It's sure if I guess Jim's selling it a little bit more,
- 1:47:08but if you're looking for work rate of matches, 1990 is not
- 1:47:11where to go. Although the Hogan match was was
- 1:47:13very entertaining, I found that the car dragged a ton at times,
- 1:47:18especially like the intermissions and the head up
- 1:47:22blue cage. But this isn't about any of
- 1:47:25that. And this is all.
- 1:47:26About the erectors, it's the erectors.
- 1:47:30It's the erectors. Sorry, but this is all about the
- 1:47:33promos. It's all about, you know, the.
- 1:47:35Holster never tells a lot. It's all about the glory of the
- 1:47:39soundboard clips here, like it's that's what I enjoyed with this
- 1:47:43the most and the chaos that was happening in all.
- 1:47:45It's a lot of classicness for sure.
- 1:47:47Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:47:48Classic is Shawn Michaels like I think destroyed at the beginning
- 1:47:53there like. Two hours.
- 1:47:55All the stuff I can never forget.
- 1:47:58Two hours and 40 minutes, and if you add up all the match times,
- 1:48:01it's one hour, 4 minutes and 49 seconds.
- 1:48:04So that's why. People are getting in a tizzy
- 1:48:07about Monday Night Raw. Like being too much mic work
- 1:48:10like too not enough in ring action.
- 1:48:11Like it's been happening forever, people.
- 1:48:14Yeah, I said it feels like a blueprint for WWE in 2025.
- 1:48:18One hour, 4 minutes and 49 seconds of wrestling in a two
- 1:48:22hour and 40 minute show. That's Sean.
- 1:48:23Sean Mooney gets more mic time than Dusty Rhodes gets ring
- 1:48:27time. So before like quadrupar?
- 1:48:30Yeah, before Nick gives his cans in the cooler.
- 1:48:33Who is your MVP of this overall card?
- 1:48:36If you have the full vouch, give an MVP to someone here.
- 1:48:41I don't even know who it could be.
- 1:48:45Well, the erectors come to mind. But so.
- 1:48:49I have two MVPS ready. Here are my 2 MVPS.
- 1:48:52First, I'm going to give mine 4 cans in the cooler I'm going to.
- 1:48:55I'm going to do that. Get that out of the way, my 2
- 1:48:58MVPS are Jim the Anvil Neihart. And Jake?
- 1:49:01Roberts and. Damian, Damian, Damian.
- 1:49:05Those two, the Anvil's promos and Jake and the snake choking
- 1:49:10him are are the top 2 moments on this entire card.
- 1:49:13And they are. They are top notch.
- 1:49:17That's that's for me, sorry. I'm going to say Hawk because
- 1:49:20he's a good friend. He gives the courtesy.
- 1:49:24What a. Good.
- 1:49:25Friend, thank you for being a friend.
- 1:49:29Oh, boy, that's a tough question.
- 1:49:30I don't know. I'm going to say Hawk, and I'm
- 1:49:33going to say fan of the show Ian because he introduced us.
- 1:49:37Like, if not for Ian, we're probably not covering this right
- 1:49:39now. Or maybe we are.
- 1:49:40Or maybe we're not. But I do I do enjoy that Ian did
- 1:49:43text us all with like, why am I not hearing SummerSlam 1990 in
- 1:49:48my podcast app right now? So.
- 1:49:51Champion at the bit. He, yeah, he, he certainly was.
- 1:49:53I feel like the way that we talked through this card,
- 1:49:57Earthquake certainly deserves a nominee.
- 1:50:01Yeah, Earthquake is the in ring MVP if you ask me.
- 1:50:03Yeah. That's for sure.
- 1:50:05And then I think that Hogan Hogan's promos make that the MVP
- 1:50:10for me, just on the mic. Yeah.
- 1:50:12Marty, honorable mention to Marty.
- 1:50:14For sure. Honorable mention to baby Oil
- 1:50:17Hogan's. All right.
- 1:50:19Yep. Yep.
- 1:50:19Whoever was supplying all the baby oil.
- 1:50:22Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:50:25All right, well, thank you guys for listening to this episode
- 1:50:29and last episode of our Summer Slam special.
