- 0:07The Detroit Tigers faced the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park for a Friday night game on April 15, 1983.
- 0:14Detroit was managed by Sparky Anderson and they were a team on the rise.
- 0:18The farm system had produced a young crop of talent throughout the center of the diamond including Lance Parrish, Jack Morris, Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell.
- 0:25They had finished over 500 in each of Anderson's four seasons and were looking to make a run for the AL East Pennant in 1983.
- 0:32Chicago was managed by Tony LaRusso and they were looking to make a push for the AL West Pennant after LaRusso brought them out of the cellar and turned them into a third place team in both 1981 and 82.
- 0:41This audio recording is from the Chicago Radio broadcast featuring announcers Joe McConnell and Early Win.
- 0:47Without giving away any spoilers, this turns out to be an extremely exciting game from one viewer or another. So at the end of this game we've also added the ninth inning call from the Tigers radio broadcast featuring announcers Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey.
- 1:00Here in the top half of the first inning, Joe McConnell along with Early Win.
- 1:05Well, he's chicken if he takes that way out, Joe and Bunt put a cold night.
- 1:11Fastball strike called a high inside corner like challenging the hitters much more this year he used to try to pick and finesse his way down and away a lot.
- 1:20Keep that ball away even for the left handed hitters but now he's coming in with it this year.
- 1:28There's a swing and a little wrist foul looped out of play on the third base side behind the White Sox dugout the board has two balls and a strike.
- 1:34I could have sworn that Joe Brickman on play up by a shot that right arm up just a little bit late after that second pitch but apparently not.
- 1:41I think you're right Joe I think he did.
- 1:43And you're right also with hard challenging Johnson there because he really popped a good pass and right it on his handle boards got two and one will just have to wait him out here.
- 1:52White rocks into the wind up here's the pitch swung on a little squibber passed about rolling on the grass rebound up to the first he got him out.
- 2:01Where does our charge in and make a quick pickup. He used the glove and threw a quick side arm underhand left to Walker at first to get Johnson by a stride.
- 2:09Bernard made the only play he could. I don't think he could have held on that ball and got a good hold on it if he tried to catch it with his hand as slippery as everything is tonight as well as it is just lost it.
- 2:19He just barely had time to go from glove to hand to Larry Herndon big tall lanky right handed hitting left fielder hitting three twenty four up to a good start.
- 2:27He had a good year last year for the Tigers coming over from the San Francisco Giants he has twelve hits and thirty seven at bats two homers and six runs batted in his one for eight with an RBI against the White Sox.
- 2:37Boyd starts him off with a slow curve that hangs inside just below the knee ball one.
- 2:43I feel fairly deep and just a bit around to the left favoring Herndon's power.
- 2:48Crosswind here tonight blowing out of the West at 14 it'll help the balls to write there's a swing and a foul field back up on the net behind home plate and it jumps up off the net into the seats below us here the open deck the gold seats here at
- 3:00the Mesquite Park in the count is even a one on one down to Herndon he was 0 for 4 against like in Detroit temperature 45 degrees game time on the lakefront we're about five minutes away here at 40 degrees at O'Hare and it's supposed to get down into the 20s tonight.
- 3:19Swing and a miss on a pitch down and in one and two the camp to her did with two out nobody on the top half of the first inning.
- 3:28Boyd a chunky right hander at 6 1 about 222 that full full beard bushy hair sticking out at each side of the baseball cap the big leg kick and the delivery check swing didn't mean to hit it rolls it foul down the first base side.
- 3:45And solo is still the first base coach for Sparky Anderson's Tigers Billy Consolo and longtime third base coach Alex Gramis still over there. Gramis himself a former Major League manager.
- 4:00So Larry Gerr got his third win this afternoon on opening day spoiling the Brew Crews first game at County Stadium and prison Mary picked up his third save.
- 4:09So the veteran left hander off to a fine start.
- 4:12One and two the camp to her didn't straight up and down stance slightly spread straight.
- 4:18Good heart slider thrown by the right hander.
- 4:21One two three inning for the Tigers and their half of the first inning at the Mesquite Park one half inning in the books Detroit nothing the White Sox coming to that.
- 4:40You know you do you know the king of business coming through.
- 4:53Oh you do.
- 4:57This is coming through.
- 5:17This was for you.
- 5:28And I was saying Louis Missouri.

- 6:06Station 42 degrees.
- 6:11Defensively the Detroit Tigers will have heard it in left lemon and center Wilson and right.
- 6:16Our Johnson the glove man at third travel a short win.
- 6:19You're at second Rick Leach at first and big Lance Parish the catcher right hander and milk milk Wilcox 32 years of age.
- 6:26He's got a birthday coming up next week on the 20th of April.
- 6:30Now there's eleven big league season came up with the Cincinnati Reds in 1970 spent three years at Cleveland partial year with the Cubs in seventy five he was sent down to Wichita.
- 6:40And since joining the Tigers he's been the most consistent right handed starting pitcher in baseball.
- 6:45Over the last five years he has won between twelve and thirteen ballgames and has lost between nine and twelve he was thirteen and twelve.
- 6:52And twelve and ten thirteen eleven twelve and nine and eighty one even though that was a strike interrupted season last year he was twelve and ten.
- 7:01He's a highball pitcher has a good forecourt to his slider pitcher most of the most of the way and occasionally will help up on a fastball.
- 7:09He is six and seven against the White Sox with a loss earlier this year and he's one ninety big league ballgames.
- 7:14He can be cute at times.
- 7:17He'll face Rudy Law Tony Bernard and Harold Baines a trio of left handed swingers.
- 7:21Rudy hitting two twenty two with four hits and eighteen at bats one of them a double two for four against Wilcox in Detroit for Rudy and he had that two base hit against Wilcox.
- 7:30They play him around to the left of the outfield expecting him to hit late.
- 7:33That's stiff legged open stance.
- 7:39Wilcox rocks into that double puff wind up here's the pitch and the breaking ball is high ball one.
- 7:48Sox trying to make it three straight over to twine there three and one against the East with all three losses three of the four losses against the Texas Rangers in that opening sweep down in Texas.
- 7:58Rudy goes after that pitch a bit late slices it foul upstairs right below us here over the top of the net.
- 8:03The count is a ball and a strike.
- 8:06Kurt Gibson the big play put it right fielder Gus who was injured a bit in that recent series at Detroit with the White Sox went under what arthroscopic knee surgery on Monday could be available to play they say possibly this weekend.
- 8:19They took a tiny piece of cartilage out of his knee.
- 8:21He's going to be all right.
- 8:24Which is a bit close at the day ball to strike one to count to Rudy Law leading it off in the bottom of the first for the White Sox.
- 8:29Well I don't see how he could run as fast he does with something in his knee or something wrong with it.
- 8:34You know Wilcox is one of the guys very few guys that gets away with picking high consistently.
- 8:40There's a one half liner belt high to travel.
- 8:42He's got it over the first and Rudy's out by a step flag on that line.
- 8:46He was nothing more than a blur running down from home plate to first base.
- 8:50In fact all the people in the know about baseball say that you can't win consistently by pitching high.
- 8:56It is tough to do all right.
- 8:57No doubt about it.
- 9:00Wilcox losing to the White Sox.
- 9:04Worked six and two thirds innings gave a big hit six runs for earned in Detroit.
- 9:08Dennis Lamp was a winner that day.
- 9:10Here's what you're getting second.
- 9:11Sackard Tony Berners-Arndt is it safely in six straight.
- 9:14He's been counted only in the opener is hitting three twenty three with ten hits and thirty one at bats a double a triple a homer and five runs batted in.
- 9:21He takes strike at the knees all one.
- 9:24He's already the left handed hitter hitting only two thirty five he's much better average wise as a right handed hitter so far this year.
- 9:31In fact his home run was hit here as a right handed swinger on opening day last Tuesday.
- 9:36Wilcox pumps and deals swung on smashed up the middle high bounce over the bag taken by travel over the first they got him out.
- 9:43That ball hit the pitching rubber went right by Wilcox and that came up miraculously almost for travel who never would have made the play had the ball on the ground.
- 9:51No I thought for a moment it had hit Wilcox but when I saw he didn't flinch I knew it didn't hit him.
- 9:57Well that ball looked like it was ticketed for center field.
- 9:59Instead slowed it down and everything just right for travel travel made the play behind the bag and Berners-Arndt was out by two steps.
- 10:07Here's right fielder Harold Bayes.
- 10:09He's hit safely in six out of seven.
- 10:12Two ninety two average for Bayes seven hits twenty four at bats still looking for that first home run.
- 10:18He and Glenn Wilson are the Tigers who tied for the early lead in triples with two apiece.
- 10:21He feels a foul upstairs behind old play out of play going after a little high pitch.
- 10:25The count is on one.
- 10:26Bayes with six RBI's two for three including one of his two triples and three runs batted in against Wilcox.
- 10:33Last Sunday in Detroit.
- 10:37The pitch on the way to Bayes.
- 10:39He swings and pops a foul again third base side.
- 10:42It's going to drift back into the third row.
- 10:44The upper deck below the luxury boxes on the third base side the count is on to one of the things that may have changed.
- 10:50Those people thought are those who didn't know about pitching high and winning is the slider and a sticky fastball.
- 10:58If you got those two you can get away with it.
- 11:00Wilcox on to fastball high one and two to camp the base with two out nobody on Luzinski on deck.
- 11:06Took a tour of one of these luxury boxes out here and they're all sold out but to they expect that they might be sold for the weekend.
- 11:12Well they've got those big heat lamps out there for those outside seats and they really are nice.
- 11:17There's a chopper to the right side glove wide of the bag by leech underhand flip to Wilcox reaches back for it and makes the play at first.
- 11:24A three one put out on Bayes and a one two three inning for Milt Wilcox against the White Sox in the first.
- 11:29After one completed at Kavisky Park no score the Sox and the Tigers.
- 11:33After the game it's Jimmy Pearsall on WMAQ.
- 11:37People love eating Jay's delicious thick cut and thin cut dip at potato chips so much it's practically impossible to get him to stop.
- 11:54I stopped eating Jay's thick cut dipettes. You did? I started eating Jay's thin cut dipettes.
- 12:00Both dipettes are tailor made for dipping. Thick cut dipettes with their crunchy wide rows and thin cut dipettes with their crispy thin rows.
- 12:12Confucius say man who claim to eat just one Jay's dipette have rest of bag hidden in his Bermuda's.
- 12:18Confucius also say man with Jay's and Bermuda's gonna sit down to one big crunch.
- 12:27Try Jay's thick cut and Jay's thin cut dipettes soon. Don't go for a dip without a dip.
- 12:36No matter what the score is the biggest hit of every Sox game is Dubuque White Sox Plumpers.
- 12:42Because Dubuque White Sox Plumpers are bigger than ordinary hot dogs.
- 12:45Bigger on a bun. Bigger on taste. Filled with so much mild meaty flavor. Your satisfaction's guaranteed.
- 12:52But the best part is you don't have to go to the game to get that great Dubuque taste.
- 12:56Just pick up a package of plumpers at your supermarket. You'll find plumpers are a hit wherever you enjoy them.
- 13:01Dubuque White Sox Plumpers, the official hot dog of the Chicago White Sox.
- 13:0667 WMAQ Chicago winner of the 1983 United Press International Station of the Year Award for News.
- 13:13Right now at 7.50 on your radio station.
- 13:16You set a record for American League catchers of the year with 32 off runs last season.
- 13:20We'll step in to lead off the Tigers second. He's hitting just 148 this time around.
- 13:25Four hits, one of them a double and 27 at bats, four RBIs.
- 13:29He was 0 for 2 against Hoyt. He's 1 for 5 on the ribby against the White Sox.
- 13:32Check swing on a slider, low and away. Ball one.
- 13:35Hoyt took something off of that pitch. Outfield deep and around to the left.
- 13:38So is the infield. Back on the rim of the grass for Parrish.
- 13:41He'll be followed by Johnny Grubb the DH tonight and Gibson stead and then Glenn Wilson.
- 13:47Big sweeping curve over but low. Ball two. The cap to Parrish leading off the second.
- 13:51No score. Neither team has had a base runner yet.
- 13:58Hoyt has now struck out nine men in 17 in the third innings.
- 14:02He leads the Sox staff in innings pitch. This is his third start.
- 14:05There's a deep drive. Right center field in the gap. It's hooking a little bit towards Paine.
- 14:08He's way out there on the warning track and he plays it off bullpen number two.
- 14:12Out on the right center field wall. The throw comes back in at Parrish.
- 14:15He's in the second base standing with a long opposite field double.
- 14:18Hoyt tried to stop that pitch. That's why Hart was throwing his breakers though.
- 14:21Trying to keep it away from him. Keep him off stride.
- 14:24Taking something off of it.
- 14:25How would you kids like to have an official replica of the rings they all serve will get this year for playing in the 1983 All-Star game at Comiskey Park?
- 14:33Well you can get one courtesy of True Value Hardware stores by attending the Sox game with the Tigers Sunday April 17.
- 14:39It's All-Star Ring Day with a free All-Star ring to the first 15,000 kids 14 and under accompanied by an add-up.
- 14:46Stop at Comiskey Park or call Ticketmaster for the best seats 559-1212.
- 14:52Johnny Grubb left-handed hitter. An outfielder by trade in the lineup as a DH.
- 14:57Came over just before the start of the year for right-handed reliever Dave Tolpik who was sent to the Texas Rangers.
- 15:02Grubb hitting 429. Three hits and seven at bats and he waves and misses.
- 15:06Had a good secure down just below the knees. The count is on one.
- 15:11Grubb has three RBIs and a double among his three hits.
- 15:15And he knocked in a game winner up at Minnesota in the first two games of the year.
- 15:20Outfield straight away and medium deep. Parish at second. Nobody out.
- 15:24We're in the top half of the second inning. Hoyt working out of the stretch for the first time.
- 15:27The big leg kick and he deals. Low it inside. A ball and a strike to Grubb.
- 15:31The number five hitter in Sparky Anderson's Tiger lineup today.
- 15:36More like football weather here in Chicago. Temperature expected to drop into the 20s tonight.
- 15:42And it's probably under 40 degrees here. Now start of tonight's ballgame.
- 15:47Hoyt delivers to Grubb. Swing and a foul tip into the dirt. Fist couldn't hang on. One ball and two strikes.
- 15:55It must be tough on a catcher to be catching a guy like Hoyt tonight.
- 15:59Good fastball and first back there was nothing but a little sponge between his hand and the leather.
- 16:04That ball pounded in there. Really rough on a sickleball pitcher.
- 16:08There'll be a lot of bees in the bat handle as well. Here's the pitch. Bouncer to the right side.
- 16:12It's sharply backhanded by Walker. Nice play.
- 16:14Wiel throws to Hoyt who staggers but caught the ball down around knee high.
- 16:18And continued across the bag at first for a rather tricky 3-1 put out. Parish moved to third.
- 16:23It's very tricky and that was Walker's fault. It was a little bit because he threw the ball overhanded.
- 16:30And instead of running into it a little bit, he threw the ball just about knee high.
- 16:33Maybe a little bit below to Hoyt.
- 16:36The best thing a first baseman can do is run in a little bit, toss the ball underhand and get it up about shoulder high.
- 16:42He was backpedaling away from the bag at an angle to flag that one down.
- 16:46He's a right-handed fielding first baseman although he bats left-handed from the plate.
- 16:50He had time though to turn around and toss that ball underhand.
- 16:53Here's Glenn Wilson, right-handed hitting right fielder. A swing and a miss.
- 16:57A little bit late and a pitch down around the knees all at once.
- 16:59He was 1-4 with an RBI and a triple when he faced Hoyt in Detroit.
- 17:04He's hitting 3-20 with 8 hits and 25 advance.
- 17:07He has a double, two triples, tying in for the league lead with Harold Baines.
- 17:10He has also hovered this year and he's knocked in 7 runs already.
- 17:13Slight crowd straightaway stance. He takes a pitch down low.
- 17:16Just a bit closer to the knees for a ball.
- 17:19One ball and one strike. Parish at third, one out.
- 17:22We're in the Tigers' second. No score here early in Chicago.
- 17:26Tigers beat the Yankees 2 out of 3. They lost last night.
- 17:30The White Sox now have won 3 out of 4 after dropping their first 3 in Texas.
- 17:34Two against this ball club.
- 17:36Fastball low, ball 2.
- 17:39Chad Lemon, former Sox outfielder on deck.
- 17:42He's the number 7 hitter for the Tigers tonight.
- 17:45Our congratulations to the Chicago Blackhawks who outskated the Minnesota North Stars 7-4
- 17:52before 17-5 at the stadium this afternoon.
- 17:55They've taken a two-game lead in their best of seven second round Stanley Cup playoff series.
- 17:59High ball to right field. That ought to score the run.
- 18:01Near the line and it falls. Oh foul by less than a foot.
- 18:04Boy Gus, I thought that ball was in there for sure,
- 18:07but it just drifted across the foul line and dropped out of Baines' reach in foul territory.
- 18:11So Parish will have to go back to third.
- 18:13I was sitting in the same seat with him because I certainly thought it was fair
- 18:16and it didn't go foul but just a couple of feet.
- 18:19You know, we're going to have to readjust a little bit this year
- 18:22with the home plate and the entire infield moved out further away by 8 feet.
- 18:27We have a little bit different angle to judge down the foul lines here.
- 18:30A year ago the ball that looked like that would have been fair,
- 18:33but this one dropped foul by maybe 10 inches or so and so White got a break.
- 18:41Yes, they're also closer this year.
- 18:43That was Worry City right there.
- 18:45Looked like a blooper nobody could get to.
- 18:47Wilson cracked his bat on the previous swing,
- 18:49so he comes back to the plate now with a blank-tire rag and a new handle.
- 18:53One on one out, Parish over at third for the Tigers here in the top of the second inning.
- 18:57Tomorrow afternoon Floyd Bannister will get another start after being shelved from the mound
- 19:01and is outing here on Tuesday.
- 19:03Bannister will pitch against the ace of the Tigers staff right into Danny Petrie,
- 19:07who's 2-0 already.
- 19:08There's a swing deep, drive right center field in the gap.
- 19:10That's going to score the run even if it's caught.
- 19:12Long way out there, up off the wall and one bounce.
- 19:15Wilson around second, going for three.
- 19:17Here's a relay to the third base back.
- 19:20Here's a relay to the third base back.
- 19:23He is in there with a slide, he is safe.
- 19:26Just a bit to the outfield side was Bernisard's relay.
- 19:29Otherwise, they might have had Wilson on a close play,
- 19:31but he tripled in the gap to right center.
- 19:33His third free-banger of the year and he takes over the American League lead,
- 19:36and that's his eighth run batted into the Tigers lead, it's one to nothing.
- 19:40That was the same one that Parish hit, same spot.
- 19:44Only thing was it was about 20 foot shorter.
- 19:47It hit at warning track there, just at the base of the wall,
- 19:51about 10 or 15 feet slow, but Parish is hit up on top of it, almost on top.
- 19:56Darn, your home run for Parish, but that one was well hit, no doubt about it.
- 20:03Now, a runner at third with one out and a run in.
- 20:05Here's Chad Lemon, two for four, including a ninth inning homer in Detroit against Hoyt.
- 20:10He's hitting free-23 with 10 hits and 31 at bats.
- 20:13One homer, one RBI, first pitch, he whacks a foul upstairs.
- 20:17The unknown player on the first base side of the screen is Hoyt came inside,
- 20:20hand high, with a good fastball.
- 20:27Well, tonight's a perfect night to challenge those hitters by throwing the ball in on the fist.
- 20:36Yeah, there'll be some of them back away from that.
- 20:38They don't want to feel those bees.
- 20:41Got to get it inside though, you can't get it out over the plate.
- 20:43Jet crowds that plate with a slightly open stance.
- 20:45Swing and a foul chop into the dirt, right by Lemon's feet.
- 20:48The count is on two. Outfield straight away and fairly deep.
- 20:53One-nothing Tigers late here in the top of the second inning on a couple of extra base hits.
- 20:57A leadoff double by Parish and a one-out triple by Glenn Wilson,
- 21:02scoring them both almost to the identical part of the ballpark in the deep gap in right center.
- 21:07Infield is pulled in, hoping to cut down Wilson in the third if he tries to score.
- 21:12There's a little loop in the right field. That's going to score Wilson a base hit for Jet Lemon.
- 21:16Fielded out there by Harold Baines, and the Tigers lead it to the nothing on Lemon's second RBI of the year
- 21:21as he just inside out of that pitch and flared it in the right field over the pulled-in infield.
- 21:27Well, here we go again.
- 21:29Oh, it's first two outings. He picks well enough to win both of them.
- 21:35But he's being cuffed around a bit here in the second inning of this ballgame tonight.
- 21:39Two-nothing Tigers. Here's Rick Leach, former football quarterback at Michigan and native of Ann Arbor.
- 21:43Left-handed hitting first baseman at 286 average on the year.
- 21:46Two hits and seven advanced. Two RBIs.
- 21:49Straightaway stance, slightly closed.
- 21:52Quite goes over to first base to keep Jet close to the bag.
- 21:55Leach did that play against the White Sox the day Hoyt pitched in Detroit.
- 22:04Hoyt to the belt. Look at first, and he steps off the rubber.
- 22:07Ian Cheddar playing games over there.
- 22:09Still only one out here in the top of the second. Hoyt had a one-two-three inning in the first.
- 22:13But he's running into a bit of trouble here in the second as the Tigers have nicked him twice.
- 22:18Two runs on three hits. Still only one out.
- 22:21I feel straightaway for Leach and medium deep.
- 22:25Ground ball, beat into the dirt foul. Gloved by Greg Walker over near first base coach's box.
- 22:30And the count is all one down to Rick Leach. He's the number eight hitter.
- 22:33Alan Trammell, the shortstop, is one down.
- 22:36Hoyt appears to have good stuff tonight, Joe, but a lot of times a guy will have good stuff.
- 22:41He'll know he's got good stuff.
- 22:43And he depends on it. Challenge the hitter a little bit too much with just everything.
- 22:46Not wearing the right clothes.
- 22:48And it gets him in trouble.
- 22:51Leach steps back in there. The Red Sox beat the Rangers at Fenway four to one.
- 22:55So Texas now drops to six and three.
- 22:58And at the moment, Oakland tied with them for the Western Division lead.
- 23:00Both clubs at six and three. There's a line drive left field.
- 23:03Base hit for Ricky Leach.
- 23:05Hittle comes into shallow left, picks up the ball.
- 23:07And rounding second and hanging on there is Chet Lemon.
- 23:09That's a fourth Tiger hit of the inning.
- 23:10That was a solid line drive to the opposite field.
- 23:13Right now, let's pause to remind all of our stations, you're listening to the Chicago White Sox Radio Network.
- 23:18This is your radio station, 67 WMAQ Chicago, coming up right after tonight's game.
- 23:23Time providing the instant request hour after Jimmy Pearson.
- 23:28Well, Fisk goes out to have a word with Hoyt.
- 23:31Runners at first and second. Still only one out.
- 23:34Four hits of the inning off Hoyt.
- 23:36Tigers came in hitting 3-0-8, a man.
- 23:39Wow, that was built up with a great start at Minnesota.
- 23:43Here's Alan Trammell hitting 3-45 with ten hits and 29 advance.
- 23:47He has three doubles, six runs batted in.
- 23:490-3 previously against Hoyt.
- 23:51And 2-6 an RBI and a run batted in against the Tigers this year.
- 23:55Right-headed hitter.
- 23:57They play a medium in the outfield. Here's the pitch.
- 23:59And he jumps away from the pitch that comes inside Belt Hive.
- 24:02All-one.
- 24:04Alan Trammell from Garden Grove, California makes his home now in San Diego.
- 24:09Has had a couple of back-to-back years.
- 24:13Not too well at the plate. He's hit.258 in each of the last two years after hitting.300 in 1980.
- 24:19The pitch to Trammell.
- 24:21There's a wide sweeping curve and it's in there.
- 24:23Knee high on the outside corner for a call strike.
- 24:25Joe Brickman shot the right arm of the air and the count is even at one and one.
- 24:30Dibzhinsky at short tonight getting his first strike for the White Sox.
- 24:35Hoyt looking in to get the side.
- 24:38Trammell at the plate.
- 24:39Bat cocked over his right shoulder.
- 24:41Double steal. Swing and a miss.
- 24:42Rout of third. Plenty of time.
- 24:44Hit first time and Chet Lemon is out.
- 24:47Trammell swung late trying to protect the runners as Parky pulled a double steal.
- 24:51But even a head-first dive and third couldn't save Chet Lemon on this peg.
- 24:56Right on the bag to Vasselhoff.
- 25:01Well, Parky's trying everything, isn't he?
- 25:03That ball was inside to Trammell and he just couldn't handle it.
- 25:07That's the second out.
- 25:09Now Leach is at second.
- 25:13Trammell still at the plate with one ball and two strikes to go.
- 25:20Tigers are now six and one.
- 25:24Tigers are now six out of 11 on the base pass.
- 25:27Chet 0 for two.
- 25:28Here's the pitch to Trammell.
- 25:29Swing and a miss.
- 25:30He tried to check his swing cutting this.
- 25:32He missed the breaking ball all the way.
- 25:34Two strikeouts in the game for Hoyt.
- 25:36It could have been worse, but the Tigers did score two on a total of four hits and one left.
- 25:40After knitting and a half in Chicago, it's Detroit 2, the Sox nothing.
- 25:44I recently saw what a Honda Civic ran the Indy 581.
- 25:51Hmm, must be a mistake.
- 25:54So I called Honda.
- 25:55No, it was official, they said.
- 25:57The U.S. Auto Club drove three 1983 Honda Civic 1300 FE hatchbacks around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway until they ran out of gas.
- 26:08They ran 578 and 581 and 604 miles.
- 26:13The EPA went even farther, I was told.
- 26:16They made the Civic FE the best gasoline mileage car in America.
- 26:21EPA estimated 46 miles per gallon and 59 highway.
- 26:25Used 46 for comparison only.
- 26:27And you can expect actual highway mileage to be less.
- 26:31But it was no mistake.
- 26:33The Honda Civic ran the Indy 581.
- 26:37The Indy 581, hmm, kind of grows on you.
- 26:41Honda, we make it simple.
- 26:45Now to present the Star Power High Octane Awards, Bob Hope.
- 26:51Hi, tonight's awards are for the highest octanes you can get.
- 26:54Envelope, please.
- 26:56And the winners are Texaco Unleaded with ethanol at 89 octane.
- 27:01New Super Regular with ethanol at 91.
- 27:05And Premium Unleaded with ethanol at 92.
- 27:08Texaco Star Power helps knock out the knocks for the highest octanes you can get.
- 27:13Texaco Star Power for car power.
- 27:16WMAQ Chicago weather forecast sunny skies tomorrow, a high of 45.
- 27:21Tonight's low 25.
- 27:22Right now it's 43 at WMAQ.
- 27:25Big boys are up for the White Sox here and they're half of the second.
- 27:28Luzinski, Kittle and Walker to face Milt Wilcox who has a 2-0 lead.
- 27:32Raggedy 261 with four RBI's.
- 27:35First pitch to the chunky right-handed hitter, a strike at the knees.
- 27:38Good slider for Wilcox.
- 27:39Luzinski has a couple of doubles this year, six hits and 23 at bats.
- 27:44And he is tied for the league lead with Mike Ivey of the Tigers.
- 27:46And game-winning RBI is with two.
- 27:48Swings and scribs, one foul.
- 27:50Down the first base side, they're going to let a roll that stays foul about 30 feet from home plate.
- 27:54Harris was running the pounce on it and it rolled back.
- 27:58Little back-up English there and caught any part of the shot to the stripe.
- 28:02Luzinski, two for seven.
- 28:05Including a game-winning RBI in Detroit against the Tigers that came against Jack Morris who was beaten last night at Yankee Stadium.
- 28:12One for three though, Luzinski was against Wilcox, the man he's facing here tonight.
- 28:16There's that double quick pop, pitch a curve, hide away.
- 28:18One ball and two strikes.
- 28:21Wilcox has got that short-arm delivery but he's got a kind of a double pump down around belt high as he brings the ball in his arms up into throwing position.
- 28:29Outfield around to the left, sells the infield.
- 28:31Big gap up the middle, pitch to Luzinski, swung on, broken bat, little pop fly, first base side drops into coaches' boxes.
- 28:37Leach can't get there in time.
- 28:40Got holes and one ball and two strikes to Luzinski, the leadoff batter here in the home half of the second.
- 28:46It is a little bit different trying to judge the fly ball.
- 28:50The ball goes into the air anywhere, infield or outfield.
- 28:53I thought that one might have a chance to be fair and be caught.
- 28:59Wilcox goes to his mouth on the grass portion of the infield behind the cutout circle around the pitcher's mound.
- 29:05Apparently they haven't gotten permission although I'm sure they're able to blow into their hand on the mound tonight with the chilly temperatures.
- 29:12Luzinski waiting, Wilcox into the windup.
- 29:14Here's the one-two delivery.
- 29:16Loan away, gets away from Parrish.
- 29:17Ball into the dirt, couldn't handle it.
- 29:19Ball two, strike two.
- 29:20Wilcox might have been trying to get a little something on beside the warm air.
- 29:24Well, Toronto got two in the first in New York, the Yankees came back with four in the second and they lead it four to two down to third in Yankee Stadium.
- 29:31Billy Martin's club in the basement right now with a three and five start.
- 29:34Here's the pitch to Luzinski, swung on and popped up right over the plate.
- 29:38Parrish tosses the mask away, running down the line, gloves it in foul territory just about 20 feet away down the first base side.
- 29:44One gone.
- 29:45Yeah, Billy's back in pinstripes.
- 29:47He brings his Yankees to town Tuesday, Wednesday, April 19th and 20th.
- 29:50Tuesday is True Value Baseball Card Night, baseball card for two stocks players for every stocks fan.
- 29:56Tickets on sale now at Ticket Master Center.
- 29:58Then, sports mark, Rose record, fast and clothing and Carson Parry, Scott Storrs.
- 30:03Top in our call to charge, 559-1212.
- 30:07Here's the man of the hour of the week at least, Ron Kittle.
- 30:10Who in the last three games has hovered three times and knocked in a league high of 12 RBIs.
- 30:15He checks swings and it's inside corner, about high for a call strike.
- 30:19Kittle started his onslaught last Sunday against the Tigers and Jack Morris when he hit a three run homer into the upper deck in left.
- 30:27He swings and misses, all in two.
- 30:30Kittle was hitless in three at bats in the first game of that series against Wilcox.
- 30:34He's hitting 3-0-8.
- 30:36Tied to the league lead in home runs with three and leads the league.
- 30:39In fact, he leads all of baseball with 12 RBIs, all in three games.
- 30:42He had six here yesterday.
- 30:44Swing and a miss.
- 30:45Oh, he's got on three pitches. Wilcox threw him a sharp breaking slider down high and away.
- 30:53Two-one.
- 30:54Wilcox gets his first strike out.
- 30:58He didn't mess with Kittle at all.
- 31:00Here's another rookie left-handed hitting Greg Walker.
- 31:04He's been a teammate of Kittle's the last couple of years in the minors.
- 31:07In fact, they've been roommates.
- 31:09Walker one for nine, a triple down in Texas with two RBIs, a 1-11 average.
- 31:14Should have shaken off the effects of that disastrous opening night by now.
- 31:18That pitch is inside a fastball just below the letters.
- 31:20Ball one.
- 31:21Walker with great power.
- 31:23Good swing. He's a left-handed hitter.
- 31:24They play him straight away and deep.
- 31:27Rocking back and forth, waiting for Wilcox's delivery.
- 31:30Little Scribber off the handle.
- 31:32Grabbed under the third base side by Johnson.
- 31:34Sidearm flip across the diamond and Walker is gone.
- 31:36Little roller to the third baseman, Howard Johnson.
- 31:38No runs, no hits, nobody left.
- 31:40Wilcox with two innings of play has put down six straight Chicago White Sox hitters.
- 31:43After two, Tigers two, Sox nothing.
- 31:46After the game, it's Jimmy Pearsall on WMAQ.
- 31:50Hey, Fred, how you doing?
- 31:52Hey, real good, Stan.
- 31:54Hey, what's this? You're not running the Thompson's Cottage this year.
- 31:57No way. This place is mine.
- 31:59You bought? Fantastic. How did you swing it?
- 32:01I got a home equity loan from General Finance.
- 32:03Yeah? How's that work?
- 32:05Well, my house in the city has really increased in value.
- 32:08General Finance loaned me money on that increased value.
- 32:11And I didn't have to touch my original mortgage.
- 32:13The fact is, a General Finance home equity loan can be for as much as $25,000.
- 32:18That's why I own this cottage and other folks rent it from me.
- 32:22Speaking of renting, Fred, do you think I could rent your new spread for a couple of weeks later this year?
- 32:26Sorry, Stan. It's all booked up.
- 32:28You too may be able to take advantage of the increased value of your home
- 32:32with a General Finance home equity loan, possibly for as much as $25,000
- 32:37without affecting your present mortgage.
- 32:40And you can use a General Finance home equity loan as you see fit.
- 32:44Call General Finance for a large home equity loan up to $50,000
- 32:47or for a smaller consumer loan. See the white pages for the office nearest you.

- 33:20Register for radio's original dating game, The Afternoon Affair
- 33:23with Terry Stevens Monday morning at 10 on WMAQ.
- 33:28Top of the order for the Tigers here to third.
- 33:30Little Lou Whitaker, who fouled out the Kittle and left, takes a curve in there,
- 33:34about high inside corner for a call strike.
- 33:36Again, shortened up on the handles, zipped a butt, and Vance Law came hurrying in from third.
- 33:41They play him way around to the left, expecting him to hit late.
- 33:44White delivers.
- 33:46Check swing, didn't mean to hit it.
- 33:48Taps it foul off to the third base side.
- 33:50Get off your church clubs, civic organizations, or youth groups just like baseball.
- 33:54The White Sox group rates are just the ticket.

- 34:06All tickets have price for every Monday night game.
- 34:09High fly ball left center field.
- 34:11Rudy Law coming in and over, and he flags it down for the first down.
- 34:14Whitaker is gone.
- 34:19One out here in the Tiger third.
- 34:21They bunched all four of their hits, scored their two runs in the second against Hoyt.
- 34:24Here's Howard Johnson who tapped out on a little roller to Bernisart at first.
- 34:28The first time up.
- 34:29Bernisart made a nice play on it to get him.
- 34:362-0 Detroit, we're in the third.
- 34:38Locking into the windup is Hoyt.
- 34:39The pitch to Johnson, a sicker, a bit low, ball one.
- 34:43The Cardinals, the Pirates, and the Expos atop the standings in the National League East.
- 34:47The Cubs in the basement at one and seven.
- 34:49Atlanta with a seven and one start leading the West.
- 34:52Dodgers are again out at six and two, followed by the Reds at five and three.
- 34:55Houston still winless in nine trips in the National League West.
- 34:59Those are a quick look at the National League standings.
- 35:01Bouncer to the right side, a one hopper taken wide of the bag by Walker.
- 35:05He'll make the play unassisted and Howard Johnson's gone.
- 35:07And there's two out here in the top of the third.
- 35:10Hoyt's had no problems with the first three hitters, Gus.
- 35:13It's been the bottom two thirds of the order that's given him problems.
- 35:16Yeah, but, Joe, you notice that there's no weak spot in this Tiger lineup.
- 35:22Every once in a while in the lineup you expect to find a 220 or a 240 hitter.
- 35:27But so far the Tigers don't have one of those.
- 35:31Larry Herndon struck out swinging to end the first inning his first time up.
- 35:37Hoyt starts him off with a big wide sweeping curve and it's in there.
- 35:40Knee high for a call strike. That pitch looked like it was on rails.
- 35:43Without a sharp break you're kind of a slow sidewinder bend.
- 35:48I feel straight away and deep for Herndon. He's got that upright straightaway stance.
- 35:51This time Hoyt turns it over and runs a fastball down and in for a ball.
- 35:55And the count is even a one and one.
- 36:02Larry Herndon, a good year last year, knocked in over 90 runs for the Tigers at 23 homers.
- 36:07Check swing, the pitch is low. The Fiss asked for an appeal.
- 36:10And Nick Premigan at first base denies it. Two balls and a straight.
- 36:17Herndon and Enos Cabell both came over by way of San Francisco in the Schatzader deal.
- 36:24Two and one pitch. Curve and a beauty in there at the knees for a call strike. Two and two.
- 36:32Lamar may have to go to that pitch a little bit more often.
- 36:34He looks like he's got a good fastball. I don't know whether he's getting the right location on it or not.
- 36:40Two balls, two strikes to Herndon. With two out and nobody on here in the top of the third, Tigers by a pair.
- 36:45Hoyt with a high leg kick in the delivery. A curve, a swing and a mercy.
- 36:48He struck him out again on a breaking ball.
- 36:50Hoyt has knocked three strikeouts and three innings.
- 36:53He's gotten Herndon twice. No runs, no hits, nobody left. Midway through the third.
- 36:57Tigers two, Sox nothing.
- 37:27For all you do, and it's fuzz to you.
- 37:39So here's to you, for all you do, you're now the king of fuses.
- 37:46I'm going through for all you do, how far all you do, is fuzz to you.
- 37:58And like the Bush St. Louis, Missouri.

- 39:04Fisk, Vance Law, and Jerry Dibzhinski to face Wilcox who has bowed down six straight hitters here tonight.
- 39:11We're at the bottom of the third, Joe Picado along with early Lynn.
- 39:15Roger with us. There's a swing and a high soft pop up into the left field coming on his hermit and he makes the catch and shot a left.
- 39:20As Fisk went after the first pitch, he tripled and had two for three against Wilcox in Detroit.
- 39:26Getting 222 with two RBIs coming in. So there's one gone and that's seven in a row retired by Milt Wilcox, a native of Honolulu.
- 39:35Here's Vance Law hitting 208. Five hits and 24 advance to RBIs.
- 39:39Over two with a run batted in against Wilcox.
- 39:42Vance won for seven with an RBI against Detroit.
- 39:46They play him straight away in the infield and the outfield.
- 39:51Although she had just a bit, maybe a step or two in the hole and deep at short is Trammell. Here's the pitch to Vance Law.
- 39:57Fast ball just a bit close about Lunderheide. Ball one.
- 40:01Cubs and the Pirates snowed out at Pittsburgh tonight.
- 40:05Baltimore postponed with Cleveland and Baltimore. They'll play two and Baltimore tomorrow. Jim Palmer will make his first start tomorrow.
- 40:11There's a sharp one hopper to Johnson at third. Easy play and there's two gone.
- 40:17Got to kick out of the notes tonight. The Tigers notes they said that Wilcox was the only native born Hawaiian on the Tigers ball club wearing number 39.
- 40:25That's a big deal, isn't it?
- 40:29Jared Dibzhinsky is going to get his first at bat in the regular season. He's been in five ballgames either as a pitch runner or as a late defensive replacement for Scott Fletcher at short.
- 40:39In eighty ballgames with Cleveland last year, he hit two thirty one with no homers. Twenty two runs batted in. He doesn't have any power. He has only one major league home run.
- 40:47He also had a few games early in the year, thirty of them precise with the Charleston Charlies. He looks at a pitch into the dirt ball one.
- 40:55Jared Dibzhinsky, the Dipper with those wicked like legs or maybe be more correct to say, rickety like legs.
- 41:03He has got the best set of bowed legs in the big leagues. He swings and loops a foul into the lower seats behind the tagging first base dugout.
- 41:12He's going to try to go to right tonight. He's going to be a bit rusty up there and the count is one of the one he cracked his bat on that one.
- 41:18Joe got it on the handle a little, I guess. Wilcox crowd him a little bit. That might be what he tapes up and uses for BP.
- 41:25By the way, speaking of BP, Britt Burns was sent down to Florida Tuesday after being introduced here at opening day through batting practice yesterday.
- 41:32He's going to throw BP four times. He's going to pitch in four instructional games, work to get his strength back up and Tony is hoping to use him.
- 41:40Possibly in New York. He's due to come off the disabled list as early as Monday, but he won't be ready by then.
- 41:46Although there's nothing physically wrong with him. He's just got to rebuild that strength. Pitch is up and in ball two down to Dibzhinsky.
- 41:55The Yankees follow Detroit in the year after this three game weekend series.
- 41:59Yankees will be here Tuesday night and Wednesday night to wrap up the seven day stand.
- 42:04Two gamer. There's a spinner right back to the bat on one hop. Wilcox feels it falling down, gets back up and throws him out.
- 42:12Nine in a row, retired for the Tiger right hander. Again in the third, nothing going for the White Sox and after three the Tigers lead it two to nothing.
- 42:19Talk baseball with Pearsall after the game on WMAQ.
- 42:23Swung on, deep fly left field, way back, that ball is going to be out of hand.
- 42:29Over deck, Paul Wright, Carlton Fisk and a $670 payoff to Jack Kixson.
- 42:35Last year WMAQ gave away almost $30,000 to excited baseball fans during the famous big payoff innings.
- 42:41The biggest payoffs in Major League Baseball. This season WMAQ's big payoff inning is even bigger.
- 42:46If your White Sox batter hits a single, it's worth $67. A double $167. A triple $267.
- 42:53A White Sox homer puts a big 25 inch Zenith console color TV in your home.
- 42:58And a Grand Slam home run is worth a fabulous 45 inch Zenith space screen remote control projection TV.
- 43:04To enter, send your name, address and phone number to WMAQ big payoff inning, post office box 3465 Chicago 60654.
- 43:12The big payoff inning starts April 24th, so get your entry in today to your White Sox flagship station 67 WMAQ.
- 43:21Ever notice how good the hot dogs taste at Comiskey Park? That's because they're Dubuque White Sox Plumpers.
- 43:27They're bigger than ordinary hot dogs. Bigger on a bun, bigger on mild, meaty flavor.
- 43:32But you don't have to go out to the game to get that great hot dog taste.
- 43:36All you have to do is pick up a package of regular beef or cheese plumpers at your supermarket.
- 43:41You'll find plumpers taste great wherever you are.
- 43:44Dubuque White Sox Plumpers, the official hot dog of the Chicago White Sox.
- 43:50And all instant request music hour follows tonight's game.
- 43:53And Jimmy Pearsall right here on WMAQ.
- 43:57One of the same three guys that got in trouble in the second inning will start things off for the Tigers here in the fourth.
- 44:06Lance Parrish doubled the right center and scored the first of the two Tiger Rams in the second, his first time up against Hoyt.
- 44:11Parrish now two for six on the year against the White Sox.
- 44:16Hoyt delivers to the big right-handed hitting catcher. That breaking ball is wide, ball one.
- 44:22Well, Mr. Steve and Alexander, the two starting pitchers in the Yankee-Toronto game in New York having problems.
- 44:28Now five to four, Toronto on the fourth.
- 44:30There's a line drive whacked into left field, past the glove of Jerry Dibczynski.
- 44:35Parrish pulled that one sharply, a sinking liner between short and third and the left and he's two for two.
- 44:41Hit number five off Hoyt.
- 44:45That'll bring up Johnny Grabo bounced out.
- 44:48Walker to Hoyt covering it first, but on the play Parrish was able to move to third where eventually he scored when Wilson tripled him in.
- 44:56I have no idea how hard Parrish hit the pitch to the first time, up right center about 410 feet.
- 45:02Now he drilled one in the left field.
- 45:05Well, he had only four hits in 27 of bats till tonight, so he was due to break out of it and he's two for two.
- 45:09And this one, upfield straight away and deep for Grubb.
- 45:12Tall, likey left-handed hitter, feet fairly close together, deep in the box, slightly closed stance.
- 45:17Hoyt takes his foot off the rubber, now turns and flips over to first base driving Parrish back.
- 45:23You know, the...
- 45:25Welcome White Sox Luncheon sponsored by the Chicago Business Magazine, Crane's Chicago Business, coming up this Monday featuring Tony LaRusso and his coaching staff.
- 45:35Here's the pitch, not a Grubb, and it's a bit low ball.

- 45:56A curve and a beauty in there, just above the knees inside corner for a call strike, and the count is even a one-on-one.
- 46:02Grubb has been around. He's hit over 300 twice in his big league career, once with the Padres when he first came up in the last league.
- 46:09He managed to hit over 300 a couple of years ago with the Texas Rangers. He was also previously with Cleveland.
- 46:16Hoyt goes over to first to keep Parrish around the bag at first.
- 46:22Denver Bears open their season tonight, as all minor leagues do, so this is quite a baseball night around the United States.
- 46:29The Denver Bears, the Sox, knew AAA at three, and the American Association will open up their season against the Aiders in Oklahoma City.
- 46:36Side-lining right-hander who saw some brief action with the White Sox last year, Jim Seawey, will pitch the opener tonight for the Bears.
- 46:43Pitch out, runner wasn't going. They must be spelling something here.
- 46:47Parrish, not much of a threat to Steele. They might have been looking for a hit-and-run that time.
- 46:51Two balls and a strike now to count the Johnny Grubb.
- 46:54I think it has to be the hit-and-run. I think it had it on last time when Grubb was up.
- 46:59Makes contact when he got Parrish around a little bit.
- 47:03Well, all Grubb was supposed to do that time was pull the ball to the right side and advance the runner, which he did.
- 47:08There's a little slow tap to second. That's going to advance the runner, too.
- 47:11Bernisart up and over to Walker at first in time to get Grubb.
- 47:14No chance to get the lead man as he packed his bat on that little roller to Bernisart at second.
- 47:18Grubb, on Parrish at second.
- 47:22So Grubb, even though he's 0-2 in the box score, did advance the runner both times.
- 47:26That'll bring up Glenn Wesselt, who tripled the right center his first time up his third triple of the year at his eighth hour behind.
- 47:31He later scored as well.
- 47:34Now he stands in. This time, Parrish is on with one out.
- 47:39Parrish at second instead of third.
- 47:43We're in the fourth inning. Tigers lead it 2-0. The pitch point to Wilson. A tap to the right side.
- 47:48A three hopper to Bernisart. He waits on it. Throws and Wilson is out by a step.
- 47:53Parrish moves to third.
- 47:56Now the ball got away.
- 47:58Yeah, Parrish didn't see it.
- 48:01The ball got away and Greg Walker chased it down.
- 48:04I looked down to put the out of the book. I don't see, I don't know what happened there.
- 48:13Well, you can't call a play over with a white Sox until it's back to the pitcher's mound.
- 48:18Deb Zinske was way over there backing somebody up. I don't know what happened.
- 48:22He might have got a hold of the ball somewhere over there.
- 48:26Oh, Walker thought it was three outs.
- 48:30Walker turned and flipped the ball to Bernisart and Bernisart had turned away.
- 48:37Well, here's Chad Levin who's single in a run his first time up. He's got a runner at third now with two outs.
- 48:41That's what happened. Walker thought that was a third out of the inning.
- 48:44Boy, that's got to be embarrassing for a rookie who's already had trouble making the defensive plays over there.
- 48:50Yeah, it certainly doesn't make your stock go up in it, does it?
- 48:52No.
- 48:54Well, he steps out of the box for a minute now. Parish at third with two out here in the top of the fourth inning.
- 49:00Oh, Walker would have found a hole. He could have crawled into it if the runner had scored on that play.
- 49:05There's a breaking ball in there for a call strike.
- 49:07Bell high right into the hands. That jammed Levin.
- 49:10Oh, it was a very dangerous pitch for Lemon though up around letter high.
- 49:19Of course, you'll have to hit him on the elbow with it.
- 49:21Chad now three for five this year against Hoyt, one for one tonight and three for eight on the year.
- 49:26Against the White Sox, his former teammates. There's a swing and a foul chopped down and back.
- 49:30It jumped over Fishead and rolls back to the base of the screen.
- 49:32On to the count as Hoyt staying hand high and inside against Lemon.
- 49:42In the bottom of this inning, the White Sox will set up the top of the order.
- 49:44So far they haven't had a baserunner in three innings.
- 49:47One complete turn at bat against Wilcox.
- 49:52Bannister and Petrie tomorrow and then on Sundays wrapped up with the Tigers,
- 49:56Dennis Lamp will try to make it five straight over the Tigers in two years.
- 50:00And he'll be opposed by Jerry Ujir.
- 50:04Off day on Monday.
- 50:09Now there's a rain delay in New York.
- 50:11Here's the pitch to Chad Lemon, fastball high.
- 50:17They're in the fourth inning at Yankee Stadium.
- 50:19Toronto jumped off to a two-nothing lead.
- 50:21The Yankees caught him down.
- 50:22Toronto is ahead again five to four when the Reigns have held up play.
- 50:27The stretch by Hoyt, the one-two pitch to Lemon.
- 50:30Fastball outside, two and two.
- 50:31And Hoyt is using the stretch now with a runner at third and two out.
- 50:35He seems to prefer pitching out of the stretch with a runner at third.
- 50:40At the end of three in Oklahoma City, as we mentioned, Denver with Jim Seawey
- 50:43pitching tonight in the opener leading Oklahoma one to nothing.
- 50:46There's a swing and a miss.
- 50:48He struck him out on a change-up curve, a wide-sweeping breaking ball.
- 50:52And that's the fourth strikeout and one in inning for Lamar Hoyt.
- 50:55No runs, a wasted single and a man left.
- 50:57Midway through the fourth year in Chicago, the Tigers two, the Sox nothing.
- 51:01The new prelude from Honda.
- 51:11It began as a clean piece of paper.
- 51:21Designers sketched an aerodynamically superior shape.
- 51:26Once the shape was perfected, engineers made it into a car with startling effect.
- 51:37The new prelude from Honda.
- 51:40When you first drive one, you'll think you're in something else.
- 51:45You'll be right.
- 51:52The new prelude from Honda.
- 51:59Fasten your seatbelts.
- 52:04Hey, guess who has the highest octane for your car?
- 52:07Texaco, that's who.

- 52:22Unleaded with ethanol at 89 octane.
- 52:25Get Texaco Starpar, the highest octanes you can get to help knock out the knocks in your car.
- 52:30Texaco Starpar for car power.
- 52:33WMAQ Chicago weather forecast a low of 25 tonight, tomorrow, sunny high 45.
- 52:39Along the lakefront 43 right now at WMAQ.
- 52:44John McConnell along with Gus Wehmeier and Chilly Kamiski Park with the temperatures about 35 or 36 degrees now.
- 52:51As we go into the home half of the fourth inning, the White Sox will send up their top three hitters.
- 52:56Law, Berndes, Ayrton, Baynes to face Wilcox for the second time.
- 52:59Milt, the right-handed from Detroit, is retired nine straight.
- 53:02And the White Sox have only had one ball out of the infield, and that was a shallow flight of left off the bat of Carlton Fisk leading off the third.
- 53:10Rudy Law tapped out the short.
- 53:11He's hit the best ball off Wilcox, a sharp one-hop liner, belt-high to trample it short to start the ballgame in the first inning for Chicago.
- 53:21Wilcox sort of a broad-beam right-hander looking in to get the sign from Big Lance Parish, his catcher.
- 53:26The right-hander delivers.
- 53:28Swing and a miss, there was that fork ball, and Rudy swung over the top, 0-1.
- 53:33Wilcox has one strikeout so far.
- 53:35He fanned Kittle on three straight pitches midway through the second.
- 53:40Well, Hoyt now has not four strikeouts for the third time this year.
- 53:43He's had four in all three of his starts, and he's gotten his four tonight, or at least four in the first four innings.
- 53:49Either pitcher is issued a walk.
- 53:51The 0-1 count pitched out to Rudy Law.
- 53:54A fast ball just a bit outside as Parish tried to yank that one over the outside edge but didn't get the call from Joe Brickman, one-on-one.
- 54:07Rudy Law who can fly on the base pass, but he has to get on first.
- 54:10Tigers lead it 2-0 here in the bottom of the fourth.
- 54:12Wilcox with a double pump with a delivery.
- 54:14A curve load and side ball too.
- 54:17Sharp breaker down and in.
- 54:22Over in the National League, they're in the fourth at Bush Stadium in St. Louis.
- 54:26The World Champion Cardinals off to a 4-1 start despite a couple of rainouts leading the Mets tonight 3-0.
- 54:32Montreal has a 1-0 lead over Windlass Houston in the fourth.
- 54:35At Houston, the Astros have lost nine straight.
- 54:38Pitch to Rudy.
- 54:39Spike on the outside corner at the knees.
- 54:41That pitch was right on the black.
- 54:43That evens the count at 2-2.
- 54:46Checked with Jimmy Leland, the third base coach.
- 54:48Davey Nelson at first for the White Sox.
- 54:54Wilcox shook off the first side as the one he wants from Parish.
- 54:57Here's the 2-2 delivery.
- 54:59And a breaking ball.
- 55:00Looked like the slider or maybe the fork ball on inside a full count down of Rudy Law leading off the fourth for the White Sox.
- 55:07Wilcox has just recently started that fork ball, Joe, and it helped him quite a bit with the secret he has.
- 55:14A little difficult for the batter to pick it up.
- 55:17Here's the payout pitch to Law.
- 55:19He swings and pops it up foul to a third base side.
- 55:22Howard Johnson over near the camera box.
- 55:24Can't reach it. Out of reach.
- 55:26Gets the top of the White Sox dug out, bounces high in the air, comes down and about the back row of the first set of boxes.
- 55:32So the count holds at 3-2.
- 55:37Ball had to fight the wind to get out of play as the wind coming over the top of the double deck stadium here, blowing out to right.
- 55:4414 mile an hour out of the west at game time.
- 55:51Now Rudy steps out as Wilcox rubs up a new ball.
- 55:54He turns his back on the batter. Full count here leading off the bottom of the fourth.
- 55:58Sox needs some base runners.
- 56:00Wilcox had a 3-0 lead early in Detroit against the White Sox, but the Sox came back to knock him out in the seventh and post a 6-3 win.
- 56:08Lyon got the victory.
- 56:10Kuzma in the same.
- 56:11Here's the payout pitch to Rudy Law.
- 56:13He pops it up again. Foul territory this time.
- 56:15There will be a play.
- 56:16Parrish over near the on deck circle for the Tigers.
- 56:18He hauls it in.
- 56:20Ten in a row, retired by Wilcox.
- 56:24You know Wilcox has a long record of hanging in there for a while, being tough.
- 56:28And you can get to him finally.
- 56:30I don't know if he gets tired or not, but he's a consistent pitcher to be, you know, gotten to it late in it like he has been.
- 56:39First year might have been 12-9 two years ago when the season was shortened by a month and a half for the strike.
- 56:45He's been right at 12 or 13 wins in each of the last five years.
- 56:48Here's Bernisard. He bounced the short his first time up.
- 56:51Got a six-gamer intact here tonight.
- 56:54Check swing. It's high. Ball one.
- 56:56I followed him all through his career, Joe.
- 56:58I was scouting for Minnesota when he was pitching for Minneapolis.
- 57:04And he had that same tag on him down in the minor.
- 57:08Pitch to Bernisard and he waves and misses at a letter high pitch.
- 57:11That might have been the sicker, although it was up.
- 57:15And the count is even at one and one.
- 57:17But he's come on been a good pitcher for the Tigers.
- 57:19The other play at the Metrodome tonight, Gus and Frank Viola has a one-nothing lead in the third.
- 57:23The twins over the Angels.
- 57:25They got the roof pumped up.
- 57:27Yeah, the roof didn't come down. This time they closed the airport.
- 57:30One-one pitch to Bernisard. It's high and away. Ball two.
- 57:33Viola, that talented young left-hander, they signed right off the college campus a year ago.
- 57:40Twins are right now three and five and in a virtual tie for the basement with the Mariners.
- 57:45Both are two under. White Sox are one under. So they're a half game up out of the basement.
- 57:51Strike at the knees. Good slider, two and two.
- 57:59Reggie Jackson has homered, I believe, for the California Angels in the fourth.
- 58:05That would tie the score up there. That's Ken Force pitching for the Angels.
- 58:10There's a shot, ground ball. The Whittaker is right.
- 58:13He moves over, picks it up, and Bernisard is out at first.
- 58:17Hit it sharply, but a skimmer.
- 58:19Just about four steps to Whittaker's right. Two gone.
- 58:28That was Reggie's first four-bagger of the year, and it ties the score in the fourth at Minnesota.
- 58:34Here's Harold Baines. He was thrown out.
- 58:36Leech to Wilcox covering at first base.
- 58:39This is his first time up.
- 58:49Wilcox pups into the motion.
- 58:51Brings it up high and away. Ball one.
- 58:53For a guy that's a high ball pitcher, he's certainly going to, not a ground ball, Joe.
- 58:57He's got seven put outs on ground ball so far in the ball game.
- 59:00Yeah, he moves it around. He comes upstairs with it, but he throws a lot of pitches around the knees as well.
- 59:05Baines, jammed with that pitch, fouls it away right up in front of Nancy Faust.
- 59:11High on the upper deck on the third base side, right under those outdoor seats on the luxury boxes.
- 59:16Wilcox is certainly not the most graceful pitcher you ever see.
- 59:19He looked like he had to put a lot of effort into all his pitches.
- 59:22Looks like he's pumping himself up.
- 59:24He does.
- 59:25The pitch to Baines, down and in. Ball two and strike one.
- 59:28Harold hit four homers and knocked in 13 runs against the Tigers last year, but he had three of those homers.
- 59:34And eight of those RBIs and one ball game here one night, the seventh of July a year ago.
- 59:41What a night that was.
- 59:44Two and one to count.
- 59:46Baines leading out over that play for that widespread slightly closed stance.
- 59:50Here's the pitch by Wilcox. He fouls it back upstairs off the window of the owners box.
- 59:57Here on our press level, the guy don't play, so the count is two and two. Baines a bit late on that pitch. It was up and away.
- 1:00:04Looks at the handle of his bat before he settles back into the batter's box.
- 1:00:08Two and two to count. Wilcox trying to put down his 12th straight batter here with Dugan in the fourth.
- 1:00:14The deliberate swung on field foul coming right back below us.
- 1:00:17Landing in the open goal seats and rolling back down the net.
- 1:00:20They couldn't hold it. Can't hold it two and two.
- 1:00:24Some fan is really getting the good natured ribbing here.
- 1:00:27You know, we got a good crowd on hand here tonight considering the coldest of the night.
- 1:00:31A lot of them here to see the fireworks, I assume.
- 1:00:34There's a bouncer down the first base side glove by Leach behind the bag.
- 1:00:37He runs up and makes the play unassisted and that's four perfect innings for Milton Wilcox.
- 1:00:41He has retired 12 straight.
- 1:00:43And at the end of the four here at Chicago, the Tigers still lead it two to nothing.
- 1:00:46After the game, it's Jimmy Pearsall on WMAQ.

- 1:02:24Just below the belt for a called strike and a late call it was by Joe Brickman.
- 1:02:390-1. White has had the one bad inning where the Tigers butch four of their five hits to score two runs.
- 1:02:45That came in the second. Those are the only runs of the game.
- 1:02:49Down we're in the top half of the fifth. Leach chops one on three bounces rolling to Burtisard.
- 1:02:56On the rim of the grass deep at second he throws him out. One gone. Leach it single this first time up.
- 1:03:00Every Monday night home game is family bargain night. All $7, $5, $4 and $3 tickets will be half price.
- 1:03:08First half price family bargain night is Monday, May the 2nd against Milwaukee Brewers.

- 1:03:19Allen Trammell one of four strikeout victims for Hoyt on a check swing third his first time up.
- 1:03:23One gone here in the Tiger fifth. The big right handed starts him off with a wide sweeping curve a bit low in the way.
- 1:03:28Ball one. Tigers about hit the White Sox five and nothing can lead it to nothing here in the top of the fifth.
- 1:03:35Wilcox has pitched a perfect game through four.
- 1:03:38Fastball inside a bit close just above the knees. That straightened Trammell up out of that crouch and a count his ball too.
- 1:03:46Trammell the number nine hitter in the Tiger order.
- 1:03:49Lou Whitaker the leadoff batter on deck.
- 1:03:53To and on a travel swung on fly ball looked in the right field. Vane's jogging in.
- 1:03:58Waiting for it. He puts it away. There's two gone.
- 1:04:03Too many fly balls to either outfield or night.
- 1:04:07It's only the third outfield put out for the Sox outfield. One by each of the three fielders.
- 1:04:12Kittle and Whitaker every or rather Whitaker has been retired by Kittle and Rudy Laws.
- 1:04:18He steps in there. He found out the Kittle in the first and he fly to shadow left center in the third.
- 1:04:24Two gone here in the fifth.
- 1:04:30Fastball strike call good pitch just above the knees inside corner as point crossed up Whitaker and came inside with a hard one.
- 1:04:38Oh and one. Whitaker's matured now. He had his best year at the plate a year ago.
- 1:04:43Little guy pumped out 15 home runs. Most of them at Detroit. That pitches down and in a ball one and one.
- 1:04:49Before that the most he'd ever hit in a year was three.
- 1:04:56There's a curve and a beauty right in there at the knees for a call strike one and two the cup.
- 1:05:01I believe Whitaker pulls more in Tiger Stadium than he does anywhere else.
- 1:05:06They've got a short porch to right field. Yes sir. So I guess he can pull when he wants to.
- 1:05:10One two pitch to Whitaker. He tried to pull that one and nubs it foul down the first base side of the ground and the count holds at one and two.
- 1:05:16Well if he can pull when he wants to I don't know why he wouldn't pull here when especially the ballpark them playing the other over to the left like they are.
- 1:05:25He's got a lot of space in right center and he can hit the ball with a third to right center.
- 1:05:29Of course he's the guy who's trying to pull the pitcher comes inside with it. For the most part they'll work him away.
- 1:05:40Now he has a sign. Here's a one two pitch to Whitaker and he misses low and away with that one two and two.
- 1:05:51Tomorrow afternoon Floyd Bannister against Dan Petrie. Here's the pitch.
- 1:05:55Swung on and a roll foul past the on deck hitter.
- 1:05:59Larry Herndon.
- 1:06:00What took a little off that one had him out in front and he pulled that one right back in the on deck circle for the Tigers.
- 1:06:06You know we've talked about Hoyt's five on one record with the Tigers.
- 1:06:09Lamp four and all against Detroit all the last two years. He goes Sunday.
- 1:06:13Dan Petrie is six and one against the White Sox.
- 1:06:17The only time he beat him was with that two out two run pitch homer by Hairston here last year.
- 1:06:21There's a dry roll to center field.
- 1:06:23Boy did Whitaker get a hold of that one and he really spanked it cleanly in the center field.
- 1:06:27A solid line drive hit. That's his 13th hit of the year.
- 1:06:31And the Tigers have a two out single here in the fifth hit number six off Hoyt.
- 1:06:37Whitaker hit a rope to center.
- 1:06:44Howard Johnson has tapped the second and rolled out the first unassisted.
- 1:06:48He's 0 for 2 and 0 for 8 on the year against the White Sox.
- 1:06:52He hit 316 last year after starting the year at Evansville.
- 1:06:55And that's why they platoon him a lot at third base although he is a switch hitter.
- 1:06:59He has been batting nothing but left handed up here so far in the bigs this year.
- 1:07:02There goes the runner Whitaker.
- 1:07:04Ground ball. Pulled foul down the first base side.
- 1:07:06Scattering moving the first base coach Billy Consolo out of there although it wasn't hit that hard.
- 1:07:11Talking about moving, Dan Mars had to move on Whitaker's line drive.
- 1:07:15Kind of flinched.
- 1:07:18The hit and run was applied there but Johnson fouled the pitch off.
- 1:07:210-1 Whitaker at first with 2 out in the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:07:25Hoyt had retired five in a row.
- 1:07:34Alomar has a sign from Carlton Fiske's catcher.
- 1:07:38Johnson waiting with that batcock tie over his shoulder.
- 1:07:41There's a fastball strike. Throw to second and time.
- 1:07:44Yes, they got Whitaker as Jerry Dibsinski put the tag on him.
- 1:07:48Whitaker now 3 out of 5 on the bases.
- 1:07:51Tigers 0 for 2 tonight. No runs, one hit.
- 1:07:54Nobody left. We reached the halfway point here.
- 1:07:56Midway through the fifth at Koniski Park the Tigers lead it 2 to nothing.
- 1:07:59The Tigers lead it 2 to nothing.

- 1:09:38Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
- 1:09:40July 20th, 1969, named the event.
- 1:09:43I think that was the first day somebody walked on the moon.
- 1:09:46You got it.
- 1:09:47Everybody's gonna win.

- 1:09:54So join in the fun with Tyler's trivia 3 to 7 p.m. on your radio station.
- 1:10:00Well it's time to go to work on this guy.
- 1:10:02Here's Leszczynski who foul out to the catchers.
- 1:10:04First time up he takes a check swing and a pitch a sicker a bit low.
- 1:10:07Ball one. Leszczynski, Kittle and Walker in that order.
- 1:10:1012th in a row have been mowed down by the right-hander Milt Wilcox
- 1:10:13who has a 2-0 lead here in the bottom of the fifth.
- 1:10:16The pitch to Leszczynski, a swing and a miss and a count is even a ball and a strike.
- 1:10:21BALL
- 1:10:23BALL
- 1:10:25BALL
- 1:10:27Mel Hall, a fine fleet-footed rookie outfielder for the Cubs.
- 1:10:31Gonna be put on the disabled list it looks like.
- 1:10:33There's a pitch, long away ball to the count to Leszczynski.
- 1:10:36One of the preseason baseball magazines.
- 1:10:40Hall was listed as the top rookie candidate coming into either league.
- 1:10:46Kittle was rated tenth.
- 1:10:48Here's the 2-1 pitch.
- 1:10:50The ball takes, strike two, go.
- 1:10:52Good pitch, knee-high outside corner and that evens it at 2-2.
- 1:10:56Well he's got Leszczynski searching up there.
- 1:10:58He hasn't had a good rip at him yet.
- 1:11:00Like we have met many hitters that has.
- 1:11:02No, he's keeping everybody off-ball.
- 1:11:042-2 delivery, fastball.
- 1:11:06Peel foul coming back and it's gonna land right on the roof,
- 1:11:10skidding over the top of the roof behind home plate.
- 1:11:122-2 the count to Leszczynski.
- 1:11:14He delivers a little quick, has that fast pump.
- 1:11:18And then he changes speeds on him.
- 1:11:21Post-boned and filling tonight, the Phillies and the Braves.
- 1:11:24So another arena, there's a slow curve over for a call, strike three.
- 1:11:27Leszczynski caught flat-footed.
- 1:11:29Second strike out of the game for Wilcox.
- 1:11:31Let's hope the 13's the unlucky number for him.
- 1:11:33And here comes Kittle.
- 1:11:36Kittle struck out on three pitches this first time up.
- 1:11:38He went down hacking.
- 1:11:44Wilcox really pulled the string on that slow-breaking ball to Leszczynski.
- 1:11:49Yeah, he feed you that hard-breaking stuff and the sinker.
- 1:11:53And when he takes something off of that breaking pitch, he's tough.
- 1:11:56He's got about two different deliveries and about five different pitches.
- 1:12:01And if you're a guess-hitter, boy, you got your work cut out for you.
- 1:12:04He throws Kittle a sinker, but it's low, ball one.
- 1:12:07Like a guy playing bridge, you got to remember the cards.
- 1:12:10Better count them.
- 1:12:11Yes, sir.
- 1:12:12Well, he threw me this one last time, threw me the other one before.
- 1:12:15I feel him feel both deep around to the left.
- 1:12:17There's a pitch and it is low, ball two.
- 1:12:21To it out, a Ron Kittle, one of the few batters ahead of Wilcox
- 1:12:24who has not walked a man nor has he been close tonight.
- 1:12:27He did have a three and two count to one batter, Rudy Law, leading off the fourth.
- 1:12:33Now the wind up and here's the pitch.
- 1:12:35Kittle swings and misses and a breaking ball down around the knees.
- 1:12:38Two balls and a strike.
- 1:12:43Johnson's only about four or five steps off the line and deep at third.
- 1:12:47Trammel on the edge of the grass.
- 1:12:48Whitaker pulled around at second and deep.
- 1:12:50So's the outfield.
- 1:12:52The pitch to Kittle.
- 1:12:53Swung out.
- 1:12:54He had a good one.
- 1:12:55The pitch to Kittle swung out.
- 1:12:57He had a hack and he files it back to the wire.
- 1:12:59To it too.
- 1:13:00That was a good fastball away.
- 1:13:02Kittle trying to go back to the middle then.
- 1:13:05Two balls, two strikes with young Greg Walker on deck.
- 1:13:09Wilcox shakes off the first side from Parrish.
- 1:13:12Now has the one he wants.
- 1:13:13To it to the Kittle.
- 1:13:14Kirby got him out looking.
- 1:13:15Oh, Kittle rocked back on his heels and that ball snapped right over the heart of the play.
- 1:13:21Two in the inning and three strikeouts for the game from Will Wilcox.
- 1:13:24Well, he has been a dandy here tonight.
- 1:13:28There's Walker who tapped out to Howard Johnson at third.
- 1:13:31His first look at Wilcox.
- 1:13:41Walker in a major league uniform.
- 1:13:43Looks like he's about 17.
- 1:13:44He's got that boyish looking face.
- 1:13:46He swings and misses.
- 1:13:47Ball popped out of Parrish has met.
- 1:13:50Walker almost fell across the plate with the force of his cut.
- 1:13:52All in one.
- 1:13:53Trying to loosen up that right shoulder before he stepped back in.
- 1:13:57A bone chilling night here at Kineski Park.
- 1:13:59Although the wind fortunately is not gusting like it was yesterday.
- 1:14:04There's a swing and a little looper.
- 1:14:06And Leach right in front of Whitaker hauls it in.
- 1:14:09Just a little spinner.
- 1:14:10A bad handle spinner.
- 1:14:12For a minute it looked like he was headed for right field.
- 1:14:13But Leach crossed right in front of Whitaker to glove it.
- 1:14:15And that's 15 men in a row through five innings put down in order.
- 1:14:20By Wilcox.
- 1:14:21At the end of five here in Chicago the Tigers lead it 2-0.
- 1:14:24After the game it's Jimmy Pearsall on WMAQ.

- 1:15:55Hi this is Jim Tyler and I have great trivia questions for you at 3 to 7 p.m. weekdays right here on 67 WMAQ Chicago.
- 1:16:03Howard Johnson, the number two hitter in the Tiger Order, has popped out twice.
- 1:16:07He was at the plate when Whitaker was thrown out attempting to steal a base in the last inning.
- 1:16:11We'll lead it off here in the sixth.
- 1:16:14Warr in on the edge and shallow at third.
- 1:16:16Here's the pitch.
- 1:16:18Swing and a foul tipped into the dude.
- 1:16:20It all for the best in baseball coverage.
- 1:16:22Have Sports Vision installed in your home today.
- 1:16:25Sports Vision brings you exclusive coverage of 112 White Sox games plus additional games involving the top teams of the American League.
- 1:16:31You can also get the best seat in the house for the MISL playoffs, the Hawks' quest for the Stanley Cup and a lot more.
- 1:16:36Order Sports Vision dial 693-9200 or call your local cable company today.
- 1:16:43Wilcox has thrown only 59 pitches through five innings.
- 1:16:47Firing 15 straight batters.
- 1:16:49There's a little loop or foul into the Tiger first base dugout on the second hop.
- 1:16:54All into the cap to Howard Johnson.
- 1:16:56Herndon and Parrish to follow.
- 1:16:59Tiger's got four of their six hits in both runs in the second.
- 1:17:03And a hit in the fourth and a hit in the fifth.
- 1:17:06Point delivers.
- 1:17:08Almost hit him.
- 1:17:09That pitch was down and in right at ankle high.
- 1:17:12And Johnson had to walk the tightrope to get out of the way of that one.
- 1:17:16One ball and two strikes.
- 1:17:18That was a good attention getter.
- 1:17:21Got Johnson's attention.
- 1:17:23Try to straighten him up.
- 1:17:25Going to deliver it.
- 1:17:27Fastball ripped up the middle.
- 1:17:28Base hit and a center field on the ground.
- 1:17:30So Johnson lays off the Tiger's six with a smash just to the glove side of Hoyt.
- 1:17:35And to the right field side of the bag at second it went out in the center field.
- 1:17:40That's two straight hits off Hoyt now.
- 1:17:41Counting the one the Whitaker got with two out in the fifth.
- 1:17:45However, he didn't seem to get his attention too much though.
- 1:17:47He stepped into that pitch and lined it right in the center.
- 1:17:49Well hit ball.
- 1:17:51Hit number seven for the Tigers.
- 1:17:54And they have a lead off man on.
- 1:17:56Sparky's tried to steal a couple times tonight.
- 1:17:58And unsuccessful both times.
- 1:18:00Here's Herndon who has struck out twice on curve balls.
- 1:18:04See what Hoyt feeds the left fielder this time.
- 1:18:08A curve and it's just a bit wide at the bell.
- 1:18:10Ball one.
- 1:18:11That was a much tighter breaking curve.
- 1:18:14You got Herndon on those wide sweeping breakers the first two times up.
- 1:18:17He checks with third base coach Alex Grammis before he steps back in.
- 1:18:23Two nothing Detroit.
- 1:18:24And the sixth Wilcox has been masterful tonight for the Tigers.
- 1:18:28Retired 15 straight through five.
- 1:18:32Hoyt turns and throws to first driving Howard Johnson back to the bag.
- 1:18:36That was only Howard's third hit now on 16 at bats this year.
- 1:18:39One for three tonight.
- 1:18:40His first hit at nine at bats this season against the Whitesides.
- 1:18:44He stretches late a bit at first.
- 1:18:47Walker holding.
- 1:18:48Herndon might try to putz the ball through the right side.
- 1:18:52Here's the pitch.
- 1:18:54Swing and a foul down and back.
- 1:18:55A ball on the strike.
- 1:19:00Several postponements tonight due to cold weather, rain and snow.
- 1:19:04Not only in the Midwest but the East as well.
- 1:19:07Baltimore postponed with Cleveland.
- 1:19:11The Angels now with a four to one lead at the Metrodome in Minnesota against the Twins in the sixth inning.
- 1:19:17Reggie is homing up there.
- 1:19:23The stretch for the right hander Hoyt.
- 1:19:24Here's the pitch now.
- 1:19:25Herndon swings and misses a sicker down around the knees.
- 1:19:28One and two to count.
- 1:19:29Good low breaking ball.
- 1:19:33Hoyt trying to fan him for the third straight time.
- 1:19:35He has four strikeouts tonight.
- 1:19:38Wilcox has three.
- 1:19:41Neither pitcher has been close to walking a batter as of yet.
- 1:19:45In fact Hoyt hadn't gone to ball free on anybody.
- 1:19:49One and two to cap to Herndon with that.
- 1:19:51Ball upright stance.
- 1:19:53Feet straight away widespread.
- 1:19:55Hoyt turns lobs to first.
- 1:20:02Upcoming road trip the Sox will go to Cleveland and up to Toronto and then over to Milwaukee before coming home for our second home stand of the year.
- 1:20:11Red Sox the Yankees will come calling them.
- 1:20:14Here's the pitch.
- 1:20:15Swing and a pass.
- 1:20:16He struck him out as he pulled the strike on a breaking ball.
- 1:20:18Quick snap throw to first.
- 1:20:19Johnson is back.
- 1:20:20That's three straight times.
- 1:20:22Herndon's gone down swinging and five in the ballgame for Lamar Hoyt.
- 1:20:25One out here with a man on first here in the Tigers sixth.
- 1:20:36Here's Parrish.
- 1:20:38Well Herndon has been duck soup for the big guy Lamar Hoyt.
- 1:20:42But Parrish has been trouble.
- 1:20:43He has doubled.
- 1:20:45Singled and scored a run.
- 1:20:46He's two for two.
- 1:20:48Both times he's let off an inning he has hit safely.
- 1:20:52Now he's up with a man on and one out here in the sixth.
- 1:20:55Check swing and the pitch is a bit low and Parrish in checking his swing staggered out across the plate.
- 1:21:01I gotta believe Parrish had intention to go in for the long ball because he had trouble stopping that swing.
- 1:21:07Looks like he was loved.
- 1:21:08Yeah he was.
- 1:21:09He was ready for it.
- 1:21:11They've resumed in New York.
- 1:21:13They're down the fifth the Blue Jays with a five to four lead over the Yankees.
- 1:21:16They had a slight rain delay there.
- 1:21:17Swing and a foul back to the wire and Parrish goes down on his right knee.
- 1:21:22Boy did he unload on that cut.
- 1:21:23One ball and one strike.
- 1:21:25He's trying to yank one out of here.
- 1:21:26Well he's about due to hit one.
- 1:21:30He hasn't homered yet this year and he had 32 last year to set a single season American League record for a catcher.
- 1:21:35Maybe you're trying to go for the cycle.
- 1:21:38On one swing.
- 1:21:41No.
- 1:21:42But he's got a.
- 1:21:43You think he wants to get the hard part now.
- 1:21:45I think the hard part for him would be the three bagger.
- 1:21:47Yeah he's got half of it already.
- 1:21:50Quick throw to first Johnson.
- 1:21:52Almost leading the wrong way.
- 1:21:54Drove back in there.
- 1:21:55Head first.
- 1:21:58The ball and the strike.
- 1:21:59They got the lance Parrish.
- 1:22:00They may have the steal in mind with Parrish at bat.
- 1:22:05Got that up right close dance on a quick throw to first and again Johnson dives back in under the tag.
- 1:22:10Let's pause for station identification.
- 1:22:12You're listening to the Chicago White Sox radio network.
- 1:22:15And all instant request hour follows tonight's game and Jimmy Pierce all right here on 67 WMAQ Chicago.
- 1:22:23Right hander doing Lamar Hoyt gazing in to get the side.
- 1:22:27The stretch and the pitch.
- 1:22:29Parrish swings one left field way back is kind of over his head off the wall and a hop gets away.
- 1:22:35That's going to score the runner Howard Johnson being waved on in and Parrish pulls in a second base with a run scoring double.
- 1:22:41It's three nothing Tigers.
- 1:22:43Parrish hit a rope over Kittles head off the left field wall out there in front of the bull ring and a short hop.
- 1:22:49Parrish is three for three tonight with two doubles.
- 1:22:53Boy he's been some kind of trouble and he hasn't been fooled on anything.
- 1:22:57He kept the pitch he almost went over the plate and fell down on like he might have been trying to go for the real long ball there.
- 1:23:05But he hit that ball hard enough.
- 1:23:07All he had to do was get it a little bit more into the air.
- 1:23:10That gives him three doubles on the year.
- 1:23:12That's his fifth RBI three nothing Tigers hit number eight off the bar Hoyt.
- 1:23:18And Parrish has been almost a one man wrecking crew here tonight with a pair of doubles and a single a run scored and a run batted in.
- 1:23:26Parrish is at second with one out.
- 1:23:28And here's Johnny Grubb who's tapped out twice.
- 1:23:31First pitch a check swing on a fastball a bit high just above the letters ball one.
- 1:23:40We're in the sixth the Tigers now with a three run lead.
- 1:23:45And so far Mr. Wilcox hasn't given the White Sox an inch.
- 1:23:50There's a smash up the middle.
- 1:23:52That's a ski wheels throws wide in the bag the runner is safe.
- 1:23:56That'll be a hit.
- 1:23:57That's a ski world three hundred sixty degrees.
- 1:24:00He loved that ball deep behind the bag at second but his throw tail towards the home plate side and pull Walker off the bag and Grubb will be given credit for a hit.
- 1:24:08Butters at first and third.
- 1:24:10Now that was if you went over to the grass right behind second base he had a world around Joe said make a complete turnaround to throw the ball had to do it in a hurry.
- 1:24:19But he didn't make the good throw that has hit the bird nine off point and we got a couple of pitchers heating up in a hurry and the White Sox bullpen.
- 1:24:29Oh wait a minute they're going to get to be a ski an error.
- 1:24:35Oh boy that is one tough error on the Zitzke in this kind of weather tonight.
- 1:24:39Here comes Dave Duncan.
- 1:24:43Dave Duncan the pitching coach comes out to have a word with light.
- 1:24:46So change your score sheets throwing air on the Zitzke.
- 1:24:51He did a great job in getting to the ball but the throw of course looked like it would have had the hitter grub beaten and so the throw allowing the runner to reach.
- 1:25:05Yes he did.
- 1:25:06He made a good stop went over behind second base and made the throw.
- 1:25:10He would have had to make a perfect throw if he got him and I don't know if he got him then or not.
- 1:25:14He might have had him by half a step or a step.
- 1:25:16According to the scorer's decision he would have had him and so that's why they charged the air.
- 1:25:20That is a very tough error.
- 1:25:26All right.
- 1:25:27Here's Glenn Wilson he's tripled in a run and scored.
- 1:25:29He's one for two last time up he bounced out to second.
- 1:25:31Sox need a double play here.
- 1:25:33First pitch a swing and a miss.
- 1:25:34As White took something off of that pitch pulled a string on it and White.
- 1:25:39Fooled the hitter Glenn Wilson that time.
- 1:25:41Butters at first and third one out here the Tigers sixth the runners in.
- 1:25:45Parrish over at third he's three for three the big bat tonight for the Bengals.
- 1:25:50Over at first is Johnny Grubb.
- 1:25:52White working out of the stretch.
- 1:25:54Swing and a miss on a pitch down and then Wilson waved at that one.
- 1:25:58Fiddle in the cat is on to.
- 1:26:06We've got some no hit information to pass along your way.
- 1:26:09If Wilcox goes another inning or so.
- 1:26:15On to the cat.
- 1:26:17To Glenn Wilson here's the pitch fastball inside he had a hop out of the way of that one.
- 1:26:21One ball and two strikes.
- 1:26:24The last no hitter pitched in this ballpark was September 10th 1967 by right handed Joel Harlan.
- 1:26:29The White Sox over the same Detroit Tigers.
- 1:26:34So it's been 16 15 and a half years since they've had a no hitter pitched in this ballpark.
- 1:26:40Pitch is a bit low on inside and Wilson laid off of it.
- 1:26:44Two balls and two strikes to go.
- 1:26:46Ted Rowe is one of the two pitchers heating up for the White Sox.
- 1:26:51It's all right hander.
- 1:26:56And a lefty.
- 1:26:58Might be Kevin Hickey.
- 1:27:00Two to deliberate.
- 1:27:04Just a little bit low.
- 1:27:06Fisk couldn't hang on and a full count now to Glenn Wilson.
- 1:27:09Johnny Grubb with a three run lead over at first will probably be off with a pitch.
- 1:27:12Parrish of course will hold at third and see what happens.
- 1:27:19Full count to Glenn Wilson.
- 1:27:21The stretch there goes the runner at first.
- 1:27:23The pitch is swung on a comeback right to the mound.
- 1:27:25They've got the runner caught in the box at third.
- 1:27:27Point throws to Fisk who runs it back to third.
- 1:27:29You want to make sure you get a man here out of the baseline.
- 1:27:31He's called out.
- 1:27:34They didn't tag him that time.
- 1:27:35They didn't have to.
- 1:27:36Parrish ran out of the baseline.
- 1:27:38So Fisk will be given credit for the put out.
- 1:27:41And the Tigers have runners at first and second.
- 1:27:43Nobody moved to third on the play.
- 1:27:46So fielder's choice by Hoyt on the ball hit back to the box.
- 1:27:52A one hopper to Hoyt off the bat of Glenn Wilson.
- 1:27:54A one to fielder's choice.
- 1:27:56Wilson safe at first. Rub stayed at second after he broke for third.
- 1:28:02So that's one run down.
- 1:28:03The fourth of the year the first one.
- 1:28:04The White Sox have turned to their favor.
- 1:28:08I don't think I'll ever forget that play at second base yesterday.
- 1:28:11Two gone now.
- 1:28:12Runners at first and second.
- 1:28:13Here's Chet Fleming who's singled in around in the second.
- 1:28:15Struck out his last time up.
- 1:28:22Hoyt to the belt.
- 1:28:23Looks at second.
- 1:28:24The pitch a fastball strike call.
- 1:28:25The ball is high outside corner all in one.
- 1:28:30That's the last no hitter pitch to the American League was on the 15th of May in 81 by Len Barker.
- 1:28:36Against Toronto that was that perfect ball gave me through against the Blue Jays.
- 1:28:40I saw that game Joe and boy he had great stuff.
- 1:28:43About 13 strikeouts that game.
- 1:28:45I reckon he did.
- 1:28:46For the swing and a loop on the right field that's going to score a run.
- 1:28:50Bates picks it up in the right field corner.
- 1:28:52The runner from second and hit first time at second.
- 1:28:55Oh and it's second base.
- 1:28:57Chet Lemon out trying to stretch a RBI single into a double as Bates cut him down.
- 1:29:04Chet second hit second RBI of the game and the Tigers add to their lead.
- 1:29:09They double it here in the sixth with two runs on three hits in an era.
- 1:29:13One man left and at the end of five and a half,
- 1:29:15Detroit leads it 4-0.
- 1:29:22My neighbor Sam is impressed by titles.
- 1:29:25When he found out Miss New Jersey drives a Honda Accord four door sedan, same as mine,
- 1:29:32he couldn't wait to tell me.
- 1:29:34But I wasn't surprised.
- 1:29:36After all I said Miss New Jersey and the Honda Accord have a lot in common.
- 1:29:40They're both beautiful and highly regarded by the competition.
- 1:29:44Yes but Miss New Jersey, cried Sam, a reigning beauty queen with the same car as you.
- 1:29:51So what I said, a lot of beautiful people drive Honda Accords.
- 1:29:55It's the best selling front wheel drive four door sedan in Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Oregon, Virginia and Washington.
- 1:30:07No New Jersey, ah Sam?
- 1:30:09No.
- 1:30:10New Jersey was a miss.
- 1:30:12Honda, we make it simple.

- 1:30:48WMAQ Chicago weather forecast fair and cold, a low of 25 tonight, tomorrow's high 42 partly sunny.
- 1:30:5443 right now at WMAQ.
- 1:31:00All designated sitter and weekend season ticket plans with an all-star guarantee have been sold out.
- 1:31:05For information on how to guarantee yourself a seat to the 1983 All-Star Game, call the White Sox sales office at 924-1000.
- 1:31:12Call them today.
- 1:31:14Joe McConnell along with early wind.
- 1:31:17So far tonight the White Sox haven't had a lick to cheer about or even get excited about.
- 1:31:22Wilcox has retired 15 straight hitters through five innings.
- 1:31:25He's thrown only 59 pitches and now he has a 4-0 lead working for him as we go to the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:31:30He'll face the tail end of the order.
- 1:31:32Fisk, Law, and Dabczynski. Fisk lied to shadow left his first time up.
- 1:31:38And that has been the only ball hit out of the infield against Milt Wilcox.
- 1:31:41Tonight has been letter perfect.
- 1:31:44The pitch on the way to Fisk, up and in, a bit close for a ball, ball one.
- 1:31:52Nolan Ryan has pitched a fifth career no-hitter for himself on September 26th at 81 by beating the Dodgers 5-0.
- 1:32:00That is the last previous no-hitter in the big leagues.
- 1:32:03And there's a breaking ball on the way, ball two to Fisk.
- 1:32:06Tigers have four runs on nine hits off Hoyt.
- 1:32:08He's had two bad innings, the second, which he gave up two runs on four hits.
- 1:32:13And in the top half of this inning, the sixth, he gave up two runs on three hits in an error.
- 1:32:16One of the four runs off Hoyt is unearned.
- 1:32:19That was a tough error on Jerry Dabczynski.
- 1:32:22To another count to the leadoff batter, Carlton Fisk.
- 1:32:25Here's the pitch for the right-hander.
- 1:32:26Fastball just a bit high, ball three.
- 1:32:31Right now, I'll take base runners anywhere we can get them, Gus.
- 1:32:35And a case like this, yes, Joe, we gotta take it.
- 1:32:38We need a bunch.
- 1:32:39So he's gotta be taken for sure.
- 1:32:40Real pitch to Fisk, fastball right down the pipe at the knees for a call strike, three and one.
- 1:32:49Wilcox now makes his off in West Bloomfield, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit.
- 1:32:53Here's a three-one delivery.
- 1:32:56Strike at the knees, the slider.
- 1:32:58Now the count is full, three and two.
- 1:33:03Wilcox has three strikeouts, no walks.
- 1:33:07Second full count of the night.
- 1:33:08This one to punch Fisk leading off the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:33:10Now he calls time, just as Wilcox starts his motion.
- 1:33:18Angels now with a five-run lead at the Met, the Metrodome, six to one in the sixth over the Twins.
- 1:33:23There's a swing, pop foul, gonna be out of play, first base side.
- 1:33:27This misses the upper deck, bounces off the camera deck, suspended from the mezzanine, and drops into the lower deck.
- 1:33:34Still three and two to Fisk.
- 1:33:42Red to the count, Fisk waiting. Wilcox into his line, appears the payoff pitch.
- 1:33:48Swing and a miss, hey, struck him out on that slip pitch, that's the porkball, a sinker.
- 1:33:53And that is three strikeouts for the last four batters and four on the night for Wilcox.
- 1:33:58He seems to be getting tougher.
- 1:34:02So that's 16 Monroe retired, that brings up Vance Law, who bounced out to third his first time.
- 1:34:06Vance is gonna break it up right here.
- 1:34:11Wilcox is throwing harder tonight, and I believe he, you know, consistently, and I've seen him in quite some time.
- 1:34:17Not letting up. The pitch to Vance Law, fastball strike, felt high inside corner, 0-1.
- 1:34:23Maybe he knows what he's going for, and they say you're not supposed to know it.
- 1:34:31Wilcox delivers to Law, a curve, and it dropped just a bit low. That was a beauty, a sharp...
- 1:34:37Breaking ball, down and in, but it just missed the strike zone, 1-1 to count.
- 1:34:42Vance Law taps the dirt out of his spikes with the end of his bat, now settles back in there.
- 1:34:47Law, an avid pupil of batting instructor Charlie Lowe, rocks back and forth on his feet.
- 1:34:52Here's the pitch, and it's a bit high with a slider, ball two and strike one, as Wilcox
- 1:34:58patted his glove after he threw that pitch, he knew it was up.
- 1:35:02The pitchers, especially, are very superstitious about having one going, no hitter going, and somebody
- 1:35:07misses it on the bench. One time, a pitcher had, a Cleveland pitcher had a no hitter going,
- 1:35:12somebody walked down to him and said, hey, you know you got a no hitter going?
- 1:35:16Swing and a miss, who? Law swung right through that pitch and accounted for two to Vance.
- 1:35:21And sure enough, the next inning, he got a hit off of him.
- 1:35:24What did you do to the guy?
- 1:35:26Everybody was about to kill him.
- 1:35:29How long did you carry a no hitter into a ball game?
- 1:35:32Oh, I've gone into the ninth, eighth time or so, seventh few times.
- 1:35:36Never made it though.
- 1:35:37Not in the majors.
- 1:35:38Swing and a miss, he pulled the string, and Law was out in front of off-stripe and waved
- 1:35:43that at Fiddley on that darting breaking ball down and away.
- 1:35:46Five strikeouts for Wilcox.
- 1:35:49Four in the last two innings.
- 1:35:53Jerry Dibczynski has got a bat now.
- 1:35:56He tapped to the mound his first time up.
- 1:36:01Wouldn't it be funny if Dibczynski in his second at bat this year break up a perfect game.
- 1:36:06Wilcox has retired 17 straight with five strikeouts, four in the last five batters in fan.
- 1:36:12We're in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:36:14The Tiger right hander working on a 4-0 lead as well.
- 1:36:18Well, it would certainly be a pleasure to all of us to see the Dibber get something started here.
- 1:36:24Pitch is a strike at the knees.
- 1:36:26He watched that one all the way into Parrish's myth.
- 1:36:29I think it was pretty evident that I've never seen Wilcox as tough as he is tonight.
- 1:36:37The 0-1 pitch to Dibczynski, a swing and a miss.
- 1:36:39Oh, he went after a letter high fastball.
- 1:36:41Went down to one knee, onto the count.
- 1:36:43And as Wilcox threw that pitch, he done a little dance.
- 1:36:46Yeah, I think he wanted it back as soon as he let it go.
- 1:36:49I think he was worried.
- 1:36:50That pitch was right up in the wheelhouse.
- 1:36:55On to the count.
- 1:36:56In fact, I think Wilcox has gotten away with a couple of pitches this inning.
- 1:36:59Here's the 0-2 pitch to Dibczynski.
- 1:37:01Oh, a late cut and a swing and a miss and a fastball.
- 1:37:03He struck out the side.
- 1:37:05Six strikeouts in the game, five in the last two innings.
- 1:37:08And at the end of six innings of play here, Wilcox working on a perfect no-hitter.
- 1:37:12The score, Detroit 4, the White Sox nothing.
- 1:37:15Talk baseball with Pearsall after the game on WMAQ.
- 1:37:19Hey, Ted, are you still leaving other coach for Little League?
- 1:37:22What's this, Carl? I thought you were going to move.
- 1:37:25No way, neighbor. I'm staying right here.
- 1:37:27What happened?
- 1:37:28Well, after looking at the cost of a bigger house and the high mortgage rates,
- 1:37:31we decided to put on an addition instead.
- 1:37:33Hey, good thinking.
- 1:37:34Good thinking and a home equity loan from General Finance.
- 1:37:37Let me get this right.
- 1:37:38Is your home equity the difference between what you owe on your mortgage
- 1:37:42and what your home is now worth?
- 1:37:44Right, and that equity was more than enough to cover the loan for the addition.
- 1:37:48I see.
- 1:37:49So, you used your house to borrow money from General Finance
- 1:37:53to put on an addition that increases the value of your house.
- 1:37:56You got it.
- 1:37:57And the Little League's got a new coach.
- 1:37:59All right.
- 1:38:00As a homeowner, you may be able to borrow $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, up to $25,000.
- 1:38:08Money you can use as you see fit when you get a home equity loan from General Finance.
- 1:38:13Call General Finance for a large home equity loan up to $50,000 or for a smaller consumer loan.
- 1:38:43You can talk to White Sox owner Eddie Einhorn Sunday morning at 10 right here on 67 WMAQ, it's 916.
- 1:38:55We go to the seventh and to call it for you, here's early.
- 1:39:00And it's a tough job tonight.
- 1:39:02Lamar Hoard having a little bit of trouble.
- 1:39:04First pitch to the batter, Mark Leach, the first baseman, is inside corner, breaking pitch for a call strike.
- 1:39:10Hoard's been in trouble two innings.
- 1:39:11The second inning, two runs, the sixth inning, two runs, and the Tigers lead 4-0.
- 1:39:16Pitch is inside to Leach.
- 1:39:18Now the count is even, 1-1.
- 1:39:20On the other side of the corn, Milt Wilcock, who's really breezing along.
- 1:39:25Never seen him have better stuff than he's had tonight, and it's quite evident with the no hitter he's got going, the perfect ballgame.
- 1:39:31Pitch swung on by Leach, and that's a drill down the left field line.
- 1:39:34Foul, going to go down into the seat.
- 1:39:36Left-hander Jerry Kuzma now throwing in a bullpen.
- 1:39:39By the way, the days of buying a poor seat to a Sox game at a remote ticket outlet are over.
- 1:39:44You can get the best seat available at the ballpark at any one of 35 ticket master centers, located in Sports Marts, Rose Records, Baskin Clothing, or any Carson Perry Scott stores.
- 1:39:54The pitch swung on by Leach, he went after a bad pitch, and he strikes out.
- 1:39:58So that's strikeout number six for Hoard in the ballgame.
- 1:40:02By the way, the number to call in case you'd like to buy a Sox ticket at any one of the 35 ticket master centers, 559-1212.
- 1:40:13Lamar hasn't had bad stuff by any means, he's had good stuff, but Lance Parrish has solved it every time he's been up to the plate.
- 1:40:21He's three for three tonight, he's scored one run, driven in one.
- 1:40:24This is Alan Trimble, a shortstop, takes the first pitch over for a call strike by Hoyt.
- 1:40:29Hoyt has six strikeouts, Gus, but he's fanned Herndon three times.
- 1:40:34Yeah, he should have scattered those around, maybe got Parrish once or twice.
- 1:40:37Yeah.
- 1:40:38And he windspires, that's what is outside.
- 1:40:40Now this has been Wilcox and Parrish night.
- 1:40:44Parrish is really having a night for himself.
- 1:40:47Hoyt looking in, getting the sign.
- 1:40:50Trimble is ready, he swings on a breaking pitch high, misses for a strike two.
- 1:41:03Let's give up a couple other base hits at different innings, that's a swing on a high breaking pitch, going into center field,
- 1:41:09really long coming in, he can't get it, just a little blooper out behind second base.
- 1:41:13Now Trimble is on, that's the tenth hill of the ballgame for the Tigers.
- 1:41:18And the Tigers have another base runner, a little bloop single into center field, Texas Laker.
- 1:41:26We'll go back to the top of the batting order, Lou Whitaker.
- 1:41:29Whitaker is one for three tonight, had a fly ball into the left side of the field, caught by Ron Kittle.
- 1:41:38Now I do believe we're going to have a pitching change as Tony LaRusso comes out,
- 1:41:45and he's going to let the left-hander, probably Jerry Kuzman, come in to pitch to Lou Whitaker.
- 1:41:55Yes, he is taking Lamar Hoyt out, and we're going to get a new pitcher, so we'll take this time out and be right back.

- 1:42:56Central Tire!
- 1:42:57Central Tire with four General Tire locations, including 18th and Indiana, and 12040 South Doty in Chicago.
- 1:43:03And all instant request music hour follows tonight's game and Jimmy Pearsall right here on WMAQ.
- 1:43:13Well, veteran left-hander Jerry Cousman, 40 years young, comes on to relieve Lamar Hoyt through 96 pitches
- 1:43:19in working six and a third innings in his quest for a sixth career victory over the Tigers,
- 1:43:24which will not be forthcoming tonight.
- 1:43:26Hoyt gave up four runs at the moment, three earned on 10 hits.
- 1:43:29He struck out six, did not walk a batter.
- 1:43:32And as Gus mentioned, he had two bad innings, the second and the sixth,
- 1:43:35when the Tigers bunched seven of their ten hits for all four runs.
- 1:43:40Cousman has no wins nor losses, but he picked up a save in three innings of shutout relief
- 1:43:45of Dennis Lamp against these Tigers in Detroit.
- 1:43:49This is his third appearance. He's worked four innings, given up five hits, three runs, all earned a 6.75 ERA.
- 1:43:55Cousman with 191 lifetime victories, including 11 last year.
- 1:43:59He was the most effective starter for the Sox in the final two months of the year.
- 1:44:02He won seven of his last nine.
- 1:44:05So he's on in relief now to try to keep the Tigers at four and hoping, of course,
- 1:44:11the White Sox bats will wake up here in the last three turns against Wilcox
- 1:44:16and can turn this ballgame around.
- 1:44:18Looked like Hoyt had good stuff, however, the stats do not show it with 10 hits in there,
- 1:44:24but he was throwing the ball very hard.
- 1:44:26Now Cousman comes on, it'll be a little different change of pace probably.
- 1:44:31He won't throw as hard as Hoyt did and or near as often.
- 1:44:35He'll sneak that fastball in there once in a while, but he's going to pitch to the left-hander now.
- 1:44:39Lou Whitaker, the second baseman. Whitaker is a left-hand batter.
- 1:44:43Infield is going to shorten up the double play with the runner on first.
- 1:44:47That's Alan Trammell. And only one away.
- 1:44:51Of course, Whitaker will be playing footsie with Vance Law down at third base trying to drag him in.
- 1:44:57Cousman goes to first base, the ball gets away from Walker, goes down the line,
- 1:45:01and there goes Alan Trammell going down to second base.
- 1:45:04And he's in there safely.
- 1:45:07Cousman made a quick throw at the first base.
- 1:45:12And it was a low pitch, which is where he should be over the first base to try and catch the runner off.
- 1:45:17Now Walker didn't hold on to it.
- 1:45:20Didn't bounce very far, rolled down to the edge of the grass.
- 1:45:23However, in the meantime, Trammell, wide awake, took off for second base.
- 1:45:27So he's on second base, one away.
- 1:45:30It's going to be an error on Walker. That's his third of the year.
- 1:45:35Cousman is all set. He's got the sign delivered and Whitaker swings and he misses.
- 1:45:40Our official score tonight, Dave Nightingale, formerly of the Chicago Tribune, now of the Sporting News.
- 1:45:46Cousman and Walker should have handled it.
- 1:45:53Cousman looking in. Trammell's got a good lead.
- 1:45:55And a pitch, swung on.
- 1:45:57And Cousman's going to take it on the first hop, throw to first base.
- 1:46:00And they got Whitaker.
- 1:46:01In the meantime, Alan Trammell comes on over to third base, but there's two away.
- 1:46:09That put out was made to picture the first baseman.
- 1:46:14Now we'll see if they're going to bring, let Howard Johnson come up to.
- 1:46:18No, they're going to pitch it. He's going to go with the right-handed hitting third sucker.
- 1:46:22Tommy Brookens, Sparky not satisfied at all with a four-run lead.
- 1:46:26And now right-hander Steve Mura, who has yet to pitch in a regulation game of the White Sox, heating up in the bullpen.
- 1:46:34Brookens swings a good bat.
- 1:46:40He's got the best contact most of the time, and he's also a pretty good glove man around third base.
- 1:46:49Brookens had a couple of hits against the White Sox in Detroit.
- 1:46:52He's hitting 4-0-9 with nine hits and 22 at bats, one homer and four runs batted in.
- 1:46:59Johnson was one for three with a run scored.
- 1:47:04Now Cousman's got his work cut out for him, trying to save that run.
- 1:47:08White Sox have got to stay in there.
- 1:47:11Wilcox is too strong tonight to let another run come in, or anymore.
- 1:47:18A good pitch by Cousman, just about knee-high breaking pitch. It's over for a called strike.
- 1:47:23Count goes to one on Brookens.
- 1:47:26He will no doubt pitch very cautious to Brookens.
- 1:47:31Trammel planted on third with Cousman putting him in the set position.
- 1:47:35He's hitting a grounded down to third base side foul.
- 1:47:40So Cousman is way ahead of Brookens. Count is on two.
- 1:47:49Cousman probably play mousy with Brookens, trying to mess him up there.
- 1:47:55Has a little bounce down to third base side, beat into the ground, it's foul.
- 1:47:59Barely rolled down to the third base coaching box.
- 1:48:04Another pitch inside, a little breaking pitch, looks like a slider.
- 1:48:09So it's still a one-two count on Tom Brookens.
- 1:48:11Third baseman will be third baseman when the Tigers take the field again.
- 1:48:17Cousman pitches from the set position again with a run on third.
- 1:48:20Pitch and it's outside.
- 1:48:23Now it's one and two.
- 1:48:28It's a four to nothing ball game here at Comiskey Park.
- 1:48:30They were the Tigers. They have ten hits and the White Sox have none.
- 1:48:35Cousman kicks, delivers, ball swung on and miss, he struck him out.
- 1:48:39So Cousman comes in and puts out the fire with a strikeout, strike it out, pitch hitter.
- 1:48:46The Tigers got a hit, they got no runs, they leave one man on base.
- 1:48:50After six and a half innings, the Tigers four and the White Sox nothing.
- 1:48:54I recently saw what a Honda Civic ran the Indy 581.
- 1:49:02Hmm, must be a mistake.
- 1:49:04So I called Honda.
- 1:49:05No, it was official they said.
- 1:49:07The U.S. Auto Club drove three 1983 Honda Civic 1300 FE hatchbacks
- 1:49:13around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway until they ran out of gas.
- 1:49:18They ran 578 and 581 and 604 miles.
- 1:49:23The EPA went even farther I was told.
- 1:49:26They made the Civic FE the best gasoline mileage car in America.
- 1:49:30EPA estimated 46 miles per gallon and 59 highway.
- 1:49:34Used 46 for comparison only.
- 1:49:37And you can expect actual highway mileage to be less.
- 1:49:40But it was no mistake.
- 1:49:42The Honda Civic ran the Indy 581.
- 1:49:46The Indy 581, hmm, kind of grows on you.
- 1:49:51Honda, we make it simple.

- 1:50:30Now according to Mary Poppins you'd always sound precious if you said what?
- 1:50:34Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
- 1:50:36July 20th, 1969, named the event.

- 1:50:4467 WMAQ
- 1:50:49So join in the fun with Tyler's Trivia, 3 to 7 p.m. on your radio station.
- 1:50:56I'm early win with Joe McConnell here at Comiskey Park where we have quite a game going tonight.
- 1:51:00After all the wild hitting and scoring ball games we've had,
- 1:51:04we've got a game going now that is a perfect game for Milt Wilcox.
- 1:51:07Only thrown 74 pitches so far.
- 1:51:09Pitching a perfect game, has retired the first 18 batters to facing.
- 1:51:13Rudy Law steps into the batter's box to be the first man in this inning
- 1:51:16followed by Berndesard and Harold Bain.
- 1:51:18First pitch is high and outside for ball one by Wilcox.
- 1:51:22Wilcox hasn't walked anybody.
- 1:51:24He's only been three in 201 batter.
- 1:51:28Third baseman playing in on there to the grass so that Law can't bunt.
- 1:51:32Now Wilcox gets the pitch over and count is even at 1-1.
- 1:51:38It's 4 to nothing.
- 1:51:39They have a total of 10 hits and the White Sox have nothing.
- 1:51:43They say that you can get to Wilcox if you stay with him,
- 1:51:45but he's staying with everybody tonight.
- 1:51:47All the hitters and nobody's gotten to him so far.
- 1:51:49Pitch is outside a seeker.
- 1:51:52And Rudy Law is now ahead of Wilcox, two balls and a strike.
- 1:51:58Outfield shifted over to the left as they do normally on Rudy Law.
- 1:52:03He has a lot of space on right center field and a lot of space down the right field line.
- 1:52:07Wilcox winds and he fires.
- 1:52:09A breaking pitch inside and low.
- 1:52:12And it's three balls and a strike.
- 1:52:13This is the first time he's been three and one, I do believe.
- 1:52:19Last inning, the sixth inning, Wilcox struck out the side.
- 1:52:22Struck out Carlton Fifth, Vance Law, and Jerry Dabdinski.
- 1:52:27Struck out a total of six.
- 1:52:30Goes into the pump, winds and delivers.
- 1:52:32Law swings the grounder going down the first base side,
- 1:52:34taken by the first baseman, leaps and Rudy Law is out by the first baseman unassisted.
- 1:52:39That's one away.
- 1:52:41So now that is 19 batters retired in a row.
- 1:52:44And it'll bring up Tony Bernizard.
- 1:52:47Tony is a switch hitter.
- 1:52:49Got about left-handed against Wilcox as he's done all night.
- 1:52:52Tony is 0 for 2 as everybody else.
- 1:52:54Who is not 0 for 3.
- 1:52:58Grounded out to the shortstop first time.
- 1:53:01Then he popped up to the...
- 1:53:04or grounded out to the second base, but his second time up in the fourth inning.
- 1:53:08Wilcox winds delivers.
- 1:53:10And a high pop-up on the first base side in foul territory.
- 1:53:14And the first baseman leaps calling for it.
- 1:53:16He almost jumps into the air to get it.
- 1:53:18And he takes it in foul territory.
- 1:53:20That's out number two.
- 1:53:23That is 20 batters in a row.
- 1:53:29Looks like the players themselves know that there's a perfect game going.
- 1:53:32And you play in a perfect game.
- 1:53:36We'll get your name in the record books for sure in big press.
- 1:53:42This will bring up Harold Baines, right fielder.
- 1:53:45Baines grounded out to the...
- 1:53:49first baseman, thrown over to the pitcher the first time up in the first inning.
- 1:53:52Then he grounded out to the first baseman unassisted in the...
- 1:53:55back and the four.
- 1:53:57Pitchers on the inside corner breaking pitch by Wilcox for call strike.
- 1:54:04The players will dive and run and jump and everything to catch a ball in this ball game.
- 1:54:09Swing and a foul going down the left side.
- 1:54:11And that's going to be out of play on the left.
- 1:54:14The White Sox dugout just down below it.
- 1:54:22I guess it's every player's dream to play in a perfect game.
- 1:54:26If you're on the winning side only.
- 1:54:31Wilcox has been the master tonight.
- 1:54:35So far, the Sox don't have much time left.
- 1:54:42Wilcox winds, he fires, Baines swings, pops up back over the...
- 1:54:46Sox dugout to our left.
- 1:54:49That was going to go into the upper deck.
- 1:54:520-2 on Harold Baines, two men away here in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:55:03The pitch and a way outside ball one.
- 1:55:09Wilcox being ahead on two sides, if Baines wanted to go fishing, he'd have to have a long line.
- 1:55:16That pitch was about three foot outside.
- 1:55:20Airplane Baines, kindly straight away in the outfield.
- 1:55:23The pitch, Baines swings and he's drilled one into left field.
- 1:55:26Hearned and started back, then he had to stop and he takes it for the out.
- 1:55:3021 batters in a row.
- 1:55:32As Baines winds to left field for the third out here in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:55:37We will go into the top of the eighth with the Tigers leading 4-0.
- 1:55:41After the game, it's Jimmy Pearsall on WMAQ.
- 1:55:46Central Tire keeps you on the road. Central Tire has brand names you know.

- 1:56:44Jerry Taft of the American Meteorological Society.
- 1:56:47Well Chicago's probably one of the toughest cities in the country to forecast for.
- 1:56:51That's why to do the best job possible you have to have the latest technical equipment.
- 1:56:55Now we have a satellite receiver. It gives us a detailed look from space every 30 minutes.
- 1:57:00We've got digital color radar and probably the best computer system in the country.
- 1:57:05I don't always get it right but I want you to know that I've got all the tools to give it my best shot right here on WMAQ.
- 1:57:12Let's check Jerry Taft's forecast and see if he's right.
- 1:57:15Fair and cold tonight, low 25. High tomorrow, 42, partly sunny.
- 1:57:19Right now it is 43 on WMAQ.
- 1:57:24Well here we go to the eighth inning.
- 1:57:26The first pitch Kuzman delivers to Herndon Lowen inside ball one.
- 1:57:29Herndon struck out three straight times against the starter Lamar Hoy to work the first six of the third innings.
- 1:57:34Kuzman came on, wiggle out of any further damage in the seventh,
- 1:57:39replacing Hoyt with one on and one out and knocked his first strike out of the game.
- 1:57:43But the story now is secondary.
- 1:57:49Milt Wilcox is the story of tonight's ball game. He has pitched perfect baseball through seven innings.
- 1:57:54He has retired 21 consecutive White Sox batters.
- 1:57:57And has a four to nothing lead here in the top of the eighth inning.
- 1:58:00And Kuzman delivers to Herndon. Fast ball at the knees for a called strike.
- 1:58:04Kuzman looks plenty quick tonight, Gus.
- 1:58:06I imagine he'll feel pretty fast and pretty strong tonight in this cool weather.
- 1:58:11See if he can handle Herndon as good as Lamar Hoyt did.
- 1:58:14One on one the cap, the left-hander kicks and deals.
- 1:58:16Curve ball lined in the right field. That ball is trouble.
- 1:58:19And it is a fair ball just inside the line.
- 1:58:22Rolling up against that low boxy Reilly out there as Bates picks it up.
- 1:58:26He's going to send him back to second I believe.
- 1:58:30Sparky Anderson out there with first base up by Nick Bremigan who called fan interference.
- 1:58:34That'll be a ground rule lead off double down into the right field corner off the bat of Larry Herndon.
- 1:58:39That's the first time we've seen that happen this year.
- 1:58:45That's one thing that fans shouldn't do is interfere with plays on the field.
- 1:58:49We've been saying that forever.
- 1:58:51Yeah, I know it.
- 1:58:54I don't understand it myself.
- 1:58:58Someday one is going to run into a fielder trying to feel that ball and probably get hurt.
- 1:59:05Or else hurt a fielder.
- 1:59:10Here's the big bat for the Tigers tonight. The guy who's catching the perfect game.
- 1:59:14Lance Parrish. He has doubled twice and single. He has scored a run and knocked it around.
- 1:59:19He's played a part in all the Tiger offense tonight.
- 1:59:23Now he's up with the runner at second. Nobody out here in the eighth inning.
- 1:59:26First pitch, slow curve and a beauty over the outside corner.
- 1:59:29Knee high, all in one.
- 1:59:31Herndon at second.
- 1:59:33Nobody out.
- 1:59:34We're in the eighth inning. The Tigers lead it 4-0. That was the 11th Detroit hit.
- 1:59:38Herndon at the plate has rather Parrish at the plate has three of them.
- 1:59:42Guzman working out of the stretch delivers. Fastball. He almost chased it into the dirt.
- 1:59:46And he did.
- 1:59:47Tried to check his swing. Nick Bremigan shot the right arm in the air. His fist looked down there.
- 1:59:51And so the count is two strikes on Parrish.
- 1:59:57In the Sox eighth, it'll be Luzinski, Kittle and Walker.
- 2:00:01And if Wilcox retires them in the ninth, it would be the bottom third of the order.
- 2:00:05Probably a couple of pitch hitters following Fisk.
- 2:00:08Guzman to the bell. Check second. Here's the pitch. Swung on high.
- 2:00:12Fly ball, twisting foul. Way down the upfield side. Back out of play into the upper deck.
- 2:00:17Bounced off the top of the auxiliary scoreboard. He wound up in the walkway down in the lower deck.
- 2:00:25So the count holds it on to Parrish.
- 2:00:28The last time the White Sox were no hit was on the 1st of August, 1962.
- 2:00:35Here at Comiskey Park, Bill Manbuket, a class of little right-hander for the Boston Red Sox, beat them 1-0 in 62.
- 2:00:42It's been a long time. 21 years.
- 2:00:45Swing, little tap down the third base side. Fair ball. No. Rolls foul.
- 2:00:48Just as it got to the bag, there would not have been much of a play on Parrish at first.
- 2:00:52That ball stayed fair.
- 2:00:54So the count, still on to the Parrish.
- 2:00:58Muro, the right-hander, was up and throwing. Guzman, the second pitcher used tonight.
- 2:01:05Burned it at second. Nobody out. We're in the eighth.
- 2:01:10In case you've just joined us.
- 2:01:12Milt Wilcox has a perfect game through seven innings. He's retired 21 consecutive batters.
- 2:01:17We're in the eighth. Right-leading, 4-0.
- 2:01:23Guzman to the back, the left-hander kicks and deals. Swung on, bounce, foul again.
- 2:01:27Pass third base coach Alec Grimas. Still on to.
- 2:01:30One team has gone longer than the White Sox without being a no-hit.
- 2:01:52You know who that club is, Guz?
- 2:01:55Nope.
- 2:01:56New York Yankees. The last time they were shut out was when I was in college by Hoyt Wilhelm in 58.
- 2:02:02Last time they were no-hit.
- 2:02:04There's a line drive foul.
- 2:02:05Yanked into the low seats down to third base side off the bat of Parrish.
- 2:02:08As Guzman took a little bit off of that breaking ball and Lance was out in front.
- 2:02:12That was a guy, Wilhelm, that I expected to pitch a no-hitter every time he walked out.
- 2:02:16Well, he didn't start too many. That was one of the few starts he ever had in his major league career.
- 2:02:21He came out of the bullpen to face the Yankees late.
- 2:02:25In fact, it was September 20, 1958 and shut him out in Baltimore.
- 2:02:29Shut him out, he no hit him.
- 2:02:31There's a high pop-up off the bat of Parrish.
- 2:02:33Foul-tipped or at best coming back near the railing.
- 2:02:36One hand's right up against the wall.
- 2:02:38And that is the first ball we've seen caught this year that definitely would have been out of reach a year ago.
- 2:02:43That was a tough catch and he backhanded the ball leading over that low boxy drilling over the first row.
- 2:02:50Well, that's a moral victory to get Lance Parrish out.
- 2:02:53First time he's been gotten out tonight.
- 2:02:56Good piscis time for that one.
- 2:02:58One gone, runners still at second.
- 2:03:00Here's Johnny Grubb who reached out a rather good a pull grub.
- 2:03:04It's going to be Johnny Walkenfuss, a right-handed hitter batting for Johnny Grubb.
- 2:03:07He was 0 for 3 tonight although he did score a run.
- 2:03:10He reached on the tough throwing error against Jerry Dibzhinski the last time up.
- 2:03:18Walkenfuss hit 300 for the Tigers a year ago.
- 2:03:22He's hitting 214 this time with 3 hits and 14 at bats to RBI's.
- 2:03:31Walkenfuss has got that unorthodox stance.
- 2:03:34Left foot right in front of the right foot.
- 2:03:36Strides into the pitch, takes a change-up curve in there at the knees for a call strike.
- 2:03:52Guzman to the stretch. Here's the pitch.
- 2:03:54Swung on, high deep drive, left field.
- 2:03:57At the wall is Kittle and he hauls it into the warning track.
- 2:04:02The ball died. It was a little bit too high to go.
- 2:04:05Yesterday that ball might have hit the roof.
- 2:04:08That ball would have traveled a lot farther yesterday than it did tonight.
- 2:04:11When he first hit it I thought it was going to go out.
- 2:04:13He got good wood on it, just lifted it too high.
- 2:04:15Too gone. Kittle caught that ball right at the base of the left field wall.
- 2:04:21That'll bring up Glenn Wilson who has tripled in a run and 3 trips tonight.
- 2:04:25Also scored. He tripled and knocked in the first run of the ball game,
- 2:04:28which right now stands as the game winner in the second inning,
- 2:04:31and then scored on 11 single last time up.
- 2:04:34Get a one hopper back to the mound and they ran down, parrish it through.
- 2:04:38One for three. Swung on, line drive, right field,
- 2:04:40Mates coming on, coming on, plays it on a hop.
- 2:04:42Here comes a throw to the plate. Here comes the runner.
- 2:04:44He is safe and going to second on the throw to the plate.
- 2:04:48There's Glenn Wilson and it's 5-0 Detroit.
- 2:04:50Dead run charged to Jerry Guzman as Wilson drives in his second run
- 2:04:54of the ball game in his ninth of the year with a single to right.
- 2:05:04The Tigers are taking any little bit of mystery that might have remained
- 2:05:10in this ball game out. It's going to be Wilcox now.
- 2:05:15A big story for the last two innings. Here comes Laroussot.
- 2:05:18That may be it for Guzman who has just surrendered his first run tonight.
- 2:05:22And the Bluebirds are on Tony's back again.
- 2:05:26That's it for Jerry Guzman. He leaves having given up a run earned on two hits.
- 2:05:31Tigers now with five runs, 12 hits in the ball game.
- 2:05:33And Steve Bure, a right-hander who won 12 ball games for the World Champion Cardinals last year
- 2:05:38and was acquired with the White Sox as payment for the loss of Steve Kemp
- 2:05:43in the free agent re-entry draft, is coming on to get his first assignment
- 2:05:49as a member of the White Sox since the regular season began.
- 2:05:52We'll be back in just a moment.
- 2:05:55Central Tire keeps you on the road. Central Tire has brand names you know.

- 2:06:42Central Tire, we're always around. Central Tire.
- 2:06:48Central Tire with four General Tire locations including 18th and Indiana and 12040 South Doty in Chicago.
- 2:06:54You can talk to White Sox owner Eddie Einhorn Sunday morning at 10 exclusively on WMAQ.
- 2:07:05Dave Bureau is making his first appearance for the White Sox in the 83 season forever.
- 2:07:13He's six foot two, a right-hander with 190 pounds.
- 2:07:17He's the same size as Joe Toyo, 12 and 11.
- 2:07:20He had the earned run out with a 4.05. He got in 35 ball games last year.
- 2:07:28That's seven complete games. Pitched 184 headings.
- 2:07:31He gave up 196 hits, walked 80 batters, took out 84.
- 2:07:36I'm sure he'd much rather come in at a ball game as that.
- 2:07:40The guy, as Wilcox says, with the hits tonight, he hasn't given up any hits.
- 2:07:46As we've said a hundred times, I guess, he's pitching a perfect ball game.
- 2:07:51So he's just going to come in and try to hold him here and hope that the White Sox can get something started.
- 2:07:55They trail by five now. It's five to nothing for the Tigers.
- 2:07:58The Tigers come on with a barrage of hits. They are a good-hitting ball club.
- 2:08:03They've scored a lot of runs just about all year except a time or so.
- 2:08:08Good-hitting ball club.
- 2:08:09They're 28 years of age, a native of New Orleans.
- 2:08:13That makes his home in Metairie.
- 2:08:16Just married.
- 2:08:19Over the winter.
- 2:08:20He's 29 and 38. His big league career.
- 2:08:23He came up with a pod race late in 78 for the Cardinals last year's best year.
- 2:08:28Well, he's going to face Chet Lemon, who is single, twice knocked in two runs tonight.
- 2:08:34Chet is two for three against his old teammates.
- 2:08:36He's batting here with a runner at second and two out.
- 2:08:41Vera delivers up and in the lemon.
- 2:08:43Ball one.
- 2:08:44Steve did not have a good spring, and the Sox really were in a quandary as to what to do with him when Brit Burns went down with that mysterious virus.
- 2:08:52The virus in his left shoulder, the final week of spring training, and so they kept Vera on the roster.
- 2:08:57Otherwise, they were going to have to release him as a free agent.
- 2:09:00Take their chances on somebody else claiming it.
- 2:09:02There's a fastball strike.
- 2:09:04He got into Whitey's doghouse late last year, did not pitch in the playoffs nor the World Series.
- 2:09:09And everyone was wondering what happened to Vera, the fifth starter.
- 2:09:12It was so very effective in the middle portions of the season for the Cardinals.
- 2:09:17There's a slider and a beauty.
- 2:09:18There's a sharp breaking curve that had Lemon rocking back and bent on his heels, and the count is one and two.
- 2:09:25Vera was hit hard during the spring.
- 2:09:26In fact, he even gave up a two-run homer and came against the Bulls of South Florida.
- 2:09:31That was his final spring outing.
- 2:09:37Down the stretch here is the one-two pitch.
- 2:09:38Dounced in, gets away from fifth, and the runner goes to third.
- 2:09:42That'll be a wild pitch as Vera snapped that one off into the dirt.
- 2:09:47So Wilson advances to third with two out.
- 2:09:51They're uncharged to Guzman, and of course if Lemon would drive in his third run of the ballgame, that too would be charged to Jerry.
- 2:09:57He worked an inning in the third.
- 2:09:59Gave up two hits.
- 2:10:00So far one run, he struck out one.
- 2:10:04We're in the eighth, five-nothing.
- 2:10:05It's been all Detroit and Milton Wilcox here tonight with a lot of help from his friends.
- 2:10:10Basically Lance Parrish and Chet Levin, the guy at the plate.
- 2:10:17Vera looking in to get the side.
- 2:10:19Two and two to count.
- 2:10:20The right-hander working out of the stretch.
- 2:10:22Swung on.
- 2:10:23One-hop liner knocked down by Bernazard.
- 2:10:25Picks it up quick for the first.
- 2:10:26Head first, I have saved, but first to run scores.
- 2:10:29Chet's third hit at third RBI of the game.
- 2:10:31The ball hit it out of Bernazard's glove as he tried to backhand it.
- 2:10:35By the time he picked it up, he couldn't get much on the throw.
- 2:10:38Bernazard was going away from first base when he knocked that one down.
- 2:10:41It was a hard hit.
- 2:10:42Smashed down just to his right.
- 2:10:45So he had to go over to the right, going away from first base.
- 2:10:48Couldn't get much on the throw.
- 2:10:50Of course, Levin is not the slowest man in the league.
- 2:10:52He dove head first in the first base.
- 2:10:55It's one of the few times he's been safe on that maneuver.
- 2:11:00That run charged to Kuzma.
- 2:11:04Runner at first with two outs, six-nothing Tigers.
- 2:11:06They've had three two-run innings tonight.
- 2:11:08They second, the sixth, and here in the eighth.
- 2:11:11The pitch is a bit low.
- 2:11:12Ball one to Rick Leach, who is single and three trips.
- 2:11:14He's also bounced a second and struck out.
- 2:11:17They say you have a much better chance by continuing to run.
- 2:11:20You lose at least a full step by sliding in head first.
- 2:11:23They tried to tell Chet that about over a five-year period.
- 2:11:27Which is high ball two.
- 2:11:3013 hits now for the Tigers.
- 2:11:31He was right one time.
- 2:11:32So that doesn't make it unanimous, I guess.
- 2:11:36Well, I'm not sure he was right.
- 2:11:37He beat the play, but maybe he'd have been already by the bag.
- 2:11:40I think he would have, Joe.
- 2:11:43You're working out of the stretch.
- 2:11:45The 2-0 delivery to Leach swung on high, pop up left side.
- 2:11:49Vance Law at third base.
- 2:11:50Bras is back in the fair-tip.
- 2:11:52He takes it for the third out.
- 2:11:54The Tigers pad their lead once again.
- 2:11:56Another two goes on the board for Detroit.
- 2:11:58Two runs on three hits.
- 2:12:00We go to the bottom of the eighth.
- 2:12:02Wilcox with a perfect game.
- 2:12:03The Tigers lead it six to nothing.
- 2:12:30Next we go to the fair in our second half.
- 2:12:41Sh Lo Grandma and Dar interpreted.
- 2:12:46They're going to show us that they come easy at the end.

- 2:13:47Joe McConnell along with early wind here at Chile Comiskey Park.
- 2:13:52But it certainly hasn't been too cold for right-hander Milt Wilcox who has retired 21 consecutive batters.
- 2:13:58It has a 6 to nothing lead to work with as we head to the bottom of the 8th.
- 2:14:02Luzinski, Kittle and Walker in that order. Luzinski has found out to the catcher Parrish and struck out on a change of curve.
- 2:14:13Wilcox has struck out 6. 5 of them coming in the 5th and 6th innings.
- 2:14:25Milton Edward Wilcox into the line up here is the pitch.
- 2:14:29A strike at the knees. Here's a note, Gus a year ago on his birthday the 20th of April he had a one hit shutout against the Royals.
- 2:14:35Well tonight he's no hitting the White Sox through 7. A couple of days in advance of his birthday. 5 to be exact.
- 2:14:43Luzinski out in front of off-strikes. Two strikes to count.
- 2:14:46Well I'll tell you one thing, you're going to see everything he's got for the rest of this ball game unless something happens.
- 2:14:52Until something happens. He's really going to work on the batter.
- 2:14:55Oh, two-pitch to Luzinski. It's a breaking ball a bit wide at the letter.
- 2:14:59One ball and two strikes. You can tell by looking at him he's really pumped up too.
- 2:15:05Wilcox rocking back and forth. Last steps into the line up. One-two pitch to Luzinski. Curve just a bit low.
- 2:15:12That snake just dipped below the knee. Ball two and strike two.
- 2:15:17Fans are booing now. I think the fans that are here, we've got a good crowd on the end.
- 2:15:21Well as long as the White Sox are going to lose they might as well see a bit of history.
- 2:15:25This will be the headline game tomorrow. Make no mistake about it. One way or the other.
- 2:15:30Wilcox in the two-two pitch on the way to Luzinski. Checks, wait, strike, three, go! He's out of there!
- 2:15:35That's seven strikeouts for Wilcox at twenty-two minute a-row gone.
- 2:15:39Yeah, he's making good pitches. He come in there with that breaking pitch that time to the ball.
- 2:15:46Here's Kittle. He has struck out twice tonight.
- 2:15:51His string of three games with home runs and RBI's in jeopardy. Needless to say,
- 2:15:58White Sox have not had a base runner. Wilcox has not pitched out of the stretch tonight.
- 2:16:03And we got one gone on the eighth.
- 2:16:09Kittle waits at the plate. Here's the pitch for the right-hander. Swung on, high-fly ball.
- 2:16:14Medium deep right center. Giving ground as Chet Lemon waving everybody away. He's got it!
- 2:16:18Five steps in front of the warning track. Got him deep right center. And there's two gone.
- 2:16:23Twenty-three in a row now. That is only the second ball hit to the outfield tonight.
- 2:16:32Now here's Greg Walker. He has bounced a third and popped up to the first baseman leech on a broken bat blooper the last time up.
- 2:16:41I got a feeling this might be the guy. I said earlier I thought Vesla was going to break it up,
- 2:16:46but he fooled him badly with a change of breaking ball that struck him out.
- 2:16:50Here's Walker. One hit all year. He'll have an advance over to tonight.
- 2:16:55Wilcox delivers. Fast ball high and away. Ball one to Greg Walker.
- 2:16:59Well, Walker is overdue and he's capable, needless to say, Wilcox is a little bit overdue to get a hit against him.
- 2:17:07However, he's really pumping. You can tell he knows he's got it.
- 2:17:10The pitch to Walker. A slider in there. A high slider into the inside corner for a call strike. What a one.
- 2:17:16And you're getting to the point now where you're sure that umpire is not going to take anything away from him.
- 2:17:21The umpire is going to try to call, make good calls all the way. He's not going to give him a lot, I don't think.
- 2:17:27Here's the pitch Walker takes just off the corner at the knee. Just a bit low. Ball two and strike one.
- 2:17:33Because it's too far away right now. You've still got four out. Anything can happen in one inning.
- 2:17:40Two gone here in the bottom of the eighth. Wilcox flirting with the history of the baseball book.
- 2:17:47Now the right hander into the wind up here is the 2-1 pitch. Walker swings and misses on a water high fastball. 2-2.
- 2:18:01Wilcox, a member of the Cubs back in 75. They thought he was washed up then. But he's put five fine years together.
- 2:18:10A very consistent fourth, fifth starter for the Tigers. Two and two to count. Walker waiting at the plate.
- 2:18:16Wilcox into the line up. Here's the 2-2 pitch. Fastball. Strike free call. He's got it going through eight.
- 2:18:22Eight strikeouts for Wilcox on a call. Third strike. Fastball knee high. Inside corner.
- 2:18:27That 24-minute-a-row has gone down here at Comiskey Park tonight. At the end of eight, Detroit 6 to the White Sox.
- 2:18:33Nothing, nothing, nothing. And in the game it's Jimmy Pearsall on WMAQ.

- 2:20:04And all instant request music hour follows tonight's game and Jimmy Pearsall right here on 67 WMAQ.
- 2:20:10Joe Mercado and Gus Wendt as we go to the ninth here in Chicago.
- 2:20:21The Tigers lead at six to nothing but the story is Milt Wilcox three outs away from a perfect game.
- 2:20:26Here's Trammell leading off against Steve Murad. He takes a letter high fastball for a call strike.
- 2:20:30Trammell is single and three trips.
- 2:20:32He'll be followed by the top of the Tiger order.
- 2:20:34What a cure in Brooklyn. Bill Wilcox has thrown just 96 pitches through eight innings and struck out eight.
- 2:20:41There's a looper hit down the right field line drifting foul Walker a long run can't reach it up against the type role advances into the lower seats.
- 2:20:51So it's all to not a travel leading off the night.
- 2:20:56They're going to have a pool feed of course with Wilcox if he gets the no hitter tonight.
- 2:21:01We will probably get all probability try to get Lance Parrish because we're set up in the clubhouse now.
- 2:21:12There's a pitch down low ball one and two to count.
- 2:21:16If somebody breaks up the no hit bet for the White Sox tonight then we'll probably try to talk to him as well.
- 2:21:22So stay tuned to our postgame show tonight.
- 2:21:26There is a breaking ball and it's just a bit high.
- 2:21:31Brickman was all set to ring up Trammell and then for some reason didn't throw the right arm to the count.
- 2:21:40During the wind up the two to pitch swung on smashed up the middle base hit in the center field hit number 14 for the Tigers and Trammell has two hits tonight.
- 2:21:49Let's pause right now to allow our stations to identify themselves.
- 2:21:52You're listening to baseball on the Chicago White Sox radio network.
- 2:21:55You can wake up tomorrow morning with Jim Tyler right here to keep you company on 67 WMAQ Chicago.
- 2:22:02Right now it's 10 o'clock.
- 2:22:06Hit number two off Muir and his first ever appearance for the White Sox.
- 2:22:12Here's Lou Whitaker one for four with a little tagger lead off batter.
- 2:22:16Single in the fifth inning and was out attempting to steal.
- 2:22:19Muir to the belt here's the pitch to Whitaker outside of all ball one.
- 2:22:24Gus we have netted hits on our side of the ledger but the Tigers haven't come up short tonight.
- 2:22:28They've found it at 14 of them.
- 2:22:30That's a lot of hits in one ballgame.
- 2:22:32We've seen quite a few here lately.
- 2:22:36Stretched by Muir.
- 2:22:37Here's the pitch Whitaker shot ground ball on the whole backhanded by Dibsinski on the second for one.
- 2:22:41That's all I get the relay is much too late to get the force.
- 2:22:46Trying to figure out.
- 2:22:50With the bottom three hitters in the lineup coming up in the bottom of this inning.
- 2:22:55Wilcox will face Harald and Fisk leading off.
- 2:23:00Well I'm sure you're going to say at least two pitchers.
- 2:23:02Yeah one at least two.
- 2:23:03I think Squires might be Tony's choice.
- 2:23:06Good contact man.
- 2:23:07The bat for Vance Law and then Harrison would probably pitch it for Dibsinski.
- 2:23:12Well you have to go right down the line because many many times there's been more than six runs scored in one inning.
- 2:23:19Pitch is high a fastball to Tommy Brookins who struck out against Kuzmin.
- 2:23:24In the seventh inning Brookins batted for Howard Johnson who was one for three as the starter at third base.
- 2:23:29Trying to figure out why Steve Murik comes straight overhand it nearly all the time.
- 2:23:33Maybe it's to get the seeker a lot.
- 2:23:35The ground ball passed him out out to short Dibsinski shovels the bird as hard for one over the first.
- 2:23:40And with two gone that'll bring up Herndon with a runner aboard.
- 2:23:56To gone here in the top of the ninth.
- 2:23:58Herndon has doubled and four trips scored one of the two runs in the eighth inning against the starter tonight he struck out three straight times.
- 2:24:05The Rocks have had two chances at double plays tonight but both times the ball hits off not hit hard enough really.
- 2:24:13Yankees and the Blue Jays are tied at five in the ninth in New York.
- 2:24:16That was a slight brain delay there in the early middle innings.
- 2:24:21Here's Herndon with two out.
- 2:24:24Brookins at first in the tagger night.
- 2:24:27The pitch to Herndon into the dirt block by a punch.
- 2:24:37You know Hoyt through 96 pitches in sixth to third innings.
- 2:24:41Wilcox has thrown 96 pitches in eight perfect innings against the White Sox.
- 2:24:44That's how good he has been.
- 2:24:46He has not walked a better.
- 2:24:47Nobody has reached.
- 2:24:51Here's the pitch now and a strike at the knees Larry Herndon one ball and one strike.
- 2:25:05One and one the count two minutes after 10 here in the Windy City a cold Chicago land tonight.
- 2:25:11The pitch to Herndon it's a bit low ball to strike one.
- 2:25:15Anytime you have a game like this is going to be a low number of pitches made but I've seen hits and ball games with well Tommy John once made 76 pitches in Baltimore.
- 2:25:27Pitch nine innings and he gave up his head.
- 2:25:30Mr. Herndon is field foul upstairs on the first base side.
- 2:25:34The ball's two strikes.
- 2:25:36They're underway at the second inning out the kingdom in Seattle the A's the Mariners no score.
- 2:25:43Milwaukee's opener was spoiled by Larry Gerard the Royals today four to three before more than fifty four thousand at County Stadium Cleveland and Baltimore Post.
- 2:25:52They'll make it up with a doubleheader tomorrow.
- 2:25:54Jim Palmer will get his first start of the year tomorrow.
- 2:26:00Angels lead by six at the Met.
- 2:26:01Here's the pitch bounces in gets away from this.
- 2:26:03That'll be another wild pitch by Vera has second.
- 2:26:08The second base.
- 2:26:14Vera has uncorked two wild pitches here in an inning and a third this first appearance of the year.
- 2:26:20Now with two out Brookings in scoring position second and a count of three and two to Larry Herndon.
- 2:26:24We have had a walk tonight.
- 2:26:27Either side.
- 2:26:29A lot of strikeouts eight for Wilcox six for one for Kuzma a total of fifteen.
- 2:26:39Herndon has fan three times.
- 2:26:40He's waiting.
- 2:26:43Europe looks and gets a sign hung out by Carlton Fisk right hander checks the runner at second.
- 2:26:48Here's the payoff pitch to her and then he pops it foul again coming back and it's off the window of the press box to our right.
- 2:26:55The Rangers are housed here in the upper deck still free and to.
- 2:27:07Red Sox beat the Rangers at Fenway today four to one.
- 2:27:11Should catch up on all the rest of the American League activity today.
- 2:27:16Now the stretch by right hander Steve Vera the pitch is swung on and popped up in the right field going out as Berners aren't coming on Harold Bates.
- 2:27:23He's got it.
- 2:27:25And we got to the bottom of the night.
- 2:27:27One hit one tiger left bottom of the night.
- 2:27:29Three to go.
- 2:27:31A perfect game so far for Wilcox as Detroit leads it going into the home half of the night.
- 2:27:35Six to nothing.
- 2:27:37To the high.
- 2:28:01Now you're cold from sight.
- 2:28:04You're going for that rich smooth taste.
- 2:28:07The taste of Michelob Light.
- 2:28:11Yeah, go ahead, pour yourself a cool Michelob Light.
- 2:28:16Ah, just compare that rich smooth taste to any beer you like.
- 2:28:21With one taste, you'll know why. It's Michelob Light.
- 2:28:25Make a love light for the winner.
- 2:28:31Make a love light.
- 2:28:34Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis, Missouri.
- 2:28:36You've made a big investment in your business.

- 2:29:00The green pages section of the Bell System Yellow Pages, the small investment that keeps your big investment paying off.
- 2:29:07Joe McConnell and early win, all set to bring you the final inning, the final half inning here at Kavisky Park.
- 2:29:25Possible history in the making.
- 2:29:27Whiteheader Milt Wilcox, five days shy of his 33rd birthday, has retired 24 consecutive White Sox banners tonight, free to go for a perfect game.
- 2:29:36He's got a six-nothing lead.
- 2:29:38Carlton Fisk, one of two banners to hit the ball out of the infield tonight.
- 2:29:41A fly ball to the left and a strikeout.
- 2:29:43It is two previous tips to the plate tonight.
- 2:29:46Wilcox has struck out eight. He has walked nobody.
- 2:29:48In fact, he's only gone to ball three, a total of twice tonight, both on a full count.
- 2:29:56Fisk waiting before he steps in.
- 2:29:58A battle of nerves now.
- 2:30:02Wilcox looking in to get the side.
- 2:30:05The right-hander into the wind appears the first pitch at the bottom of the night.
- 2:30:08Swung on, fly ball left field, coming over and in is heard and he's waiting.
- 2:30:12He's got it, two more to go.
- 2:30:14That's 25 in a row, retired by Milt Edward Wilcox.
- 2:30:23You know, I was watching him on the monitor sitting on the bench and he was sitting there wiping out, face with a towel,
- 2:30:30keep dry all sitting by the pitching coach, as expected, as expected, Mike Squires batting for Vance Law,
- 2:30:37who bounced out and struck out on two trips tonight.
- 2:30:39Squires did not have a hit all year.
- 2:30:41Wouldn't it be ironic if he's the guy that breaks it up with one out of the night?
- 2:30:45And you can tell that Wilcox is just chomping at the bit to get back on the mound.
- 2:30:49Squires, 0 for 6 this year. 0 for 2 in pinch-hitting roles.
- 2:30:53He started one ballgame in Detroit.
- 2:30:55He's a tough contact hitter, a left-handed batter.
- 2:30:57They play him just a little bit left to center.
- 2:30:59The infield around to the right, maybe three steps.
- 2:31:02Wilcox into the line-up. Here's the pitch to Squires.
- 2:31:05A sicker is a bit low on inside ball one.
- 2:31:07And the fans here, 19,483 of them, here to watch the ballgame of the first fireworks display of the year,
- 2:31:13are all pulling for Wilcox now. They want to be a part of history.
- 2:31:20Ball on the count to Mike Squires.
- 2:31:22Wilcox into the line-up. Here's the pitch.
- 2:31:24Spanky, check, swing, loop, or foul under the upper deck in the third base side.
- 2:31:27A ball and a strike.
- 2:31:30Wilcox has never been sharper, at least in this reporter's opinion.
- 2:31:33He's mixed up his off-speed breaking ball, high-fast ball, slider, curve.
- 2:31:39He has had superb control and command over all of his pitches today.
- 2:31:44He tugs on the bill of his cap, steps up on the pitching rubber.
- 2:31:47One ball and one strike to Mike Squires.
- 2:31:4925 men up, 25 men down.
- 2:31:52Wilcox takes a deep, cool breath of fresh air here in the Chicago.
- 2:31:56A right-hander into the line-up. Here's the pitch.
- 2:31:59Slug on and foul back right in front of us into the upper deck.
- 2:32:02One and two down to Squires.
- 2:32:04Jerry Herston already on deck.
- 2:32:13Another irony about Squires, if he should be the guy to break it up,
- 2:32:16if anybody does, Squires is a native of Michigan.
- 2:32:20Born, raised, went to Western Michigan, that is hometown of Kalamazoo.
- 2:32:24Well, Mike is just trying to make contact. He's not swinging hard.
- 2:32:28He's going into the ball.
- 2:32:29Here's the one-two pitch outside of all.
- 2:32:32One deep and close, two and two to count.
- 2:32:36Now the fans, this is one of the rare times when the fans are really into the ball game on the side of a visitor.
- 2:32:43Two balls, two strikes to Squires. One out, nobody on, bottom of the ninth.
- 2:32:47Wilcox with a perfect game going. Leading.
- 2:32:49The score really incidental at this point because it's one side and Detroit has a six-nothing edge.
- 2:32:56Wilcox gets the side from his catcher, Lance Perry.
- 2:32:58So right-hander into the line-up. Here's the pitch.
- 2:33:00Outside and high, ball three in the count of four.
- 2:33:06Yeah, you're wondering if they're pulling the umpire for calling out a ball.
- 2:33:08The ball is up above the shoulders on Squires.
- 2:33:11No question about whether it was a ball or not.
- 2:33:15Well, he can't go any farther with Squires. It's three and two.
- 2:33:20Wilcox kicking and scraping around the rubber.
- 2:33:22He's got to be as tight as a mainspring out there.
- 2:33:28He's got the side. The right-hander into the line-up. Here's the payoff pitch.
- 2:33:32Swung on. Ground ball. Head to the first base.
- 2:33:34But Leach, he runs up the line and there's two out of the ninth.
- 2:33:36One more to go.
- 2:33:38Twenty-six up and twenty-six down.
- 2:33:42There have only been a handful of perfect games pitched in Major League history.
- 2:33:50The last guy to do it, ironically enough, was the last guy to pitch a no-hitter in the big leagues.
- 2:33:55Len Barker.
- 2:33:58And Gus was there then. He's there now.
- 2:34:01And here's Jerry Hurston switch hitting out the ball.
- 2:34:04Fitzhitter for Jerry Dibsinski with two gone in the night.
- 2:34:08Yeah, I've seen one already and this one here and both of them have been against me.
- 2:34:14Budding pitched one.
- 2:34:17Charlie Robertson to the White Sox in 1928. Pitched one at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
- 2:34:21And that was the only perfect game in many years until the World Series and Don Larson.
- 2:34:26There's a smash at the middle.
- 2:34:28Base hit! Jerry Hurston!
- 2:34:30Break's up! Bill Wilcox has been for immortality with two out in the night.
- 2:34:35He had retired twenty-six in a row.
- 2:34:38And Hurston hit the first pitch at the middle, his first hit of the year.
- 2:34:42I kind of thought he might be the man to do it.
- 2:34:45He's a good pitcher. Comes off that bench swinging.
- 2:34:50Well, Wilcox was one man shy.
- 2:34:53It was a clean single, fortunately.
- 2:34:55And he's been a great player.
- 2:34:57And that's a picture of the Jetson's head ball shot out over the second base bag in the center field.
- 2:35:03So, with two out of the night, Hurston breaks up.
- 2:35:06Wilcox is good for a perfect game.
- 2:35:08And that'll bring up Rudy Long.
- 2:35:11And you can see Wilcox. He just kind of, been down forward and threw his heart down towards his feet.
- 2:35:20Out of the stretch for the first time is Wilcox to Rudy Long.
- 2:35:23Bouncer to first.
- 2:35:24Leach has got it. He runs to the bag.
- 2:35:27A one-hit shutout for Milt Wilcox.
- 2:35:30The Tiger dug out empty.
- 2:35:32Hand shakes all around for the veteran right-hander who pitched a one-hitter almost a year ago.
- 2:35:37Five days shy of a year ago on his 32nd birthday against Kansas City.
- 2:35:41Tonight, five days early, he pitches a brilliant one-hit shutout to beat the White Sox.
- 2:35:46Losing a perfect game mid with two out of the night on a base hit by Jerry Hurston.
- 2:35:51Final score as the Tigers take the opener of this three-game series.
- 2:35:55Detroit 6, the White Sox nothing.
- 2:35:57Stay tuned for the postgame show, tonight's game on the Chicago White Sox Radio Network.

- 2:39:30Joe McConnell back here at Chicago's Comiskey Park.
- 2:39:34Milt Wilcox, a 32-year-old right-hander due to have a birthday in five days, had a brush with destiny tonight.
- 2:39:40And with us in the victorious Tiger Clubhouse is his catcher, Lance Parrish,
- 2:39:44who provided all the offense the right-hander needed with three hits and RBI and a run score tonight.
- 2:39:49Lance, boy, the adrenaline had to really be pumping in that ninth inning.
- 2:39:53Oh, it was. It was really exciting, let me tell you.
- 2:39:55Have you ever caught a no-hitter in the big leagues before?
- 2:39:57No, I haven't. No, I haven't.
- 2:39:59And I was hoping that I'd get the opportunity tonight, but I guess that's just the way fate has it.
- 2:40:05Well, I'll tell you, he couldn't have pitched a better ball, gave me through only 105 pitches.
- 2:40:08He struck out eight, didn't walk anybody, only went to ball three on three batters.
- 2:40:12What did you talk about in the dugout before you came out to pitch that fateful ninth inning?
- 2:40:16I didn't say anything to him. I was afraid to. I just wanted to let him go through his usual routine
- 2:40:21and get a chance to keep himself relaxed and whatever he needed to do.
- 2:40:24And I just tried to keep it away from him as much as I could. I didn't want him to think about it.
- 2:40:29And he went out and did a heck of a job, but that's too bad he didn't get it.
- 2:40:33It looked like he had command of just about everything he threw tonight.
- 2:40:35His off-speed stuff looked great. He was up a few times.
- 2:40:38He might have gotten away with a couple of pitches early, but really there wasn't any kind of a thing close to a hit
- 2:40:43until Baines got a hole-in-one with two out in the seventh.
- 2:40:45Well, this is by far the best game I've seen Milt throw.
- 2:40:48He's come close on occasion to throwing ball games close to this, but nothing like it.
- 2:40:53I was excited just as well as everybody else was, and I was really hoping that he'd get it.
- 2:40:59And gosh dang it, he didn't do it, and I feel really bad for him.
- 2:41:02But he did pitch a super ball game, and he got the W, and that's what counts.
- 2:41:06Did you catch that one hitter he threw last April 20th against the Royals?
- 2:41:11You know, I don't know if I did or not, to be honest with you.
- 2:41:14Can't remember, huh?
- 2:41:15Well, obviously, even though he had pitched a previous one hitter a year ago,
- 2:41:19he didn't come as close to immortality as he did tonight.
- 2:41:22Well, this would have been just as much of an excitement for me as it would have been for him.
- 2:41:27You know, I was hoping and praying there that he'd let one more out to go, and it didn't happen.
- 2:41:31But, you know, he pitched a super ball game. He has nothing to be ashamed of,
- 2:41:34and I'm very proud of him just like everybody else is.
- 2:41:37Well, it's got to be a big win for your ball club as well,
- 2:41:39because the White Sox have been very tough for your team to handle,
- 2:41:42not only earlier this year, but last year as well.
- 2:41:44Well, they certainly have, and I hope that this is going to change the tide a little bit.
- 2:41:48They've been awful rough on us, and I hope this turns things around for us.
- 2:41:51Lance, thanks for coming on with us after the ball game. Congratulations.
- 2:41:53All right. Thank you.
- 2:41:54You know, the catcher sometimes deserves almost as much credit as the pitcher
- 2:41:58for calling a great ball game.
- 2:42:00We'll be back to talk to the villain as far as the Tigers are concerned.
- 2:42:03Pitch hitter Jerry Hurston, who broke up the perfect game bid with two out of the ninth with a pitch single.
- 2:42:08He's waiting in the White Sox clubhouse,
- 2:42:10and we'll be back to talk with Jerry in just a moment.

- 2:43:39the first pitch standing by
- 2:43:48with us today I would imagine a
- 2:43:50very subdued clubhouse is White
- 2:43:52Sox pinch hitter par excellence
- 2:43:54Jerry Hurston who picked tonight
- 2:43:56of all nights to get his first
- 2:43:57hit of the year it came with two
- 2:43:58outs nobody on in a perfect game
- 2:44:00bet by right handed Bill Wilcox
- 2:44:02and Jerry you came up swinging
- 2:44:03you jumped on the first pitch.
- 2:44:05Yeah I was in inside the
- 2:44:06clubhouse you know being keeping
- 2:44:08the ball and I was taking a few
- 2:44:11practice swings and Jerry Kuzma
- 2:44:14he told me Jerry just take it
- 2:44:15right up the middle and I said
- 2:44:17okay because I was up on that
- 2:44:18first pitch and fortunately it
- 2:44:20was a fastball right there and I
- 2:44:22just swung and days hit up the
- 2:44:23middle.
- 2:44:24I haven't checked the record
- 2:44:25book but have you had that much
- 2:44:26success against Wilcox in the
- 2:44:27past.
- 2:44:29Well the only time I ever faced
- 2:44:30him was in the minor leagues and
- 2:44:33it was only a couple of games
- 2:44:34that I faced him and I guess I
- 2:44:36got a few hits there here and
- 2:44:38I think that's the only thing
- 2:44:39that I could have done.
- 2:44:40Have you ever been in a
- 2:44:41situation where you came up in
- 2:44:42the ninth inning at home with a
- 2:44:43fans all wanted you to make out
- 2:44:45no never.
- 2:44:48But you know the situation like
- 2:44:49that you're not going to
- 2:44:50understand the fans understand
- 2:44:52the fans they want to see this
- 2:44:54no hitter perfect game whatever
- 2:44:56and you know they were really
- 2:44:57cheering for the other team and
- 2:45:00once I came out to warm up the
- 2:45:01pitcher and I told the wrong guy
- 2:45:05you know so I know that they
- 2:45:07were really excited and it was
- 2:45:08really a thrill to be associated
- 2:45:11with an occasion like this and I
- 2:45:14was really giving them my best
- 2:45:15shot and fortunately I was able
- 2:45:17to get a hit well I had pride at
- 2:45:19stake for our team you know we
- 2:45:20wanted to rush hitting ball
- 2:45:22clubs in the major leagues and
- 2:45:24you know everybody was pulling
- 2:45:25for me and you know I was just
- 2:45:26trying to do my best.
- 2:45:27Well your name is going to be
- 2:45:29linked with Wilcox's tomorrow I
- 2:45:30can assure you of that and of
- 2:45:32course you'd trade it all in for
- 2:45:33a victory tonight.
- 2:45:34Right.
- 2:45:35Well good luck Jerry and maybe
- 2:45:37tomorrow's going to be hot for
- 2:45:38you the next couple of weeks.
- 2:45:39Hopefully so I feel real good
- 2:45:40now.
- 2:45:40All right.
- 2:45:41Thank you very much.
- 2:45:41All right.
- 2:45:42Jerry Hairston who broke up
- 2:45:43Wilcox has been for a perfect
- 2:45:45game with two out of the night
- 2:45:46with a clean pitch single up the
- 2:45:47middle.
- 2:45:48The only base runner the White
- 2:45:49Sox had against the red hot
- 2:45:51right hander the Tigers pitching
- 2:45:53in 35 degree weather here
- 2:45:54tonight.
- 2:45:55It certainly wasn't any holding
- 2:45:57Wilcox back who threw only 105
- 2:45:59pitches to get his one hit shut
- 2:46:01out victory.
- 2:46:02We've also added the ninth inning
- 2:46:03call from the Tigers radio
- 2:46:04broadcast featuring announcers
- 2:46:06Ben Harwell and Paul Carey.
- 2:46:14Here's Carlton Fisk the first
- 2:46:16man to face Milt in the ninth
- 2:46:18inning.
- 2:46:19Fisk so far batted twice he's
- 2:46:21flied to left the soft fly and
- 2:46:23the last time up Wilcox struck
- 2:46:25him out.
- 2:46:26Three to go and it'll be a
- 2:46:27perfect game for Wilcox.
- 2:46:34He has seemed to very composed
- 2:46:36and he seems to be on the brink
- 2:46:38of this historic moment.
- 2:46:41Now he heaves a sigh looks in to
- 2:46:42get his side.
- 2:46:43Here's the pitch on the way
- 2:46:45Fisk swings there's a fly ball
- 2:46:46to left.
- 2:46:47Here comes turned and digging
- 2:46:48he's there he's got it and it's
- 2:46:50two to go.
- 2:46:52A soft fly down the line and
- 2:46:55left field picked off by Larry
- 2:46:56Herndon.
- 2:46:58Fisk is out.
- 2:46:59And Mike Squire the left hand
- 2:47:04batting first baseman comes up
- 2:47:06now as a pet hitter.
- 2:47:08He'll be batting for Vance Law
- 2:47:13Squires is the batter he's
- 2:47:15hitting for law Vance law
- 2:47:17Squires with no hits and six
- 2:47:19hits so far in the season.
- 2:47:31Wilcox is two outs away from
- 2:47:34perfection in this game.
- 2:47:35He's got a six to nothing lead
- 2:47:38Squires waiting at the plate
- 2:47:39milk goes into the motion
- 2:47:41delivers a fastball low ball
- 2:47:44to one out nobody on night
- 2:48:00setting here it comes and Squires
- 2:48:02swings and bows it away.
- 2:48:05That one in the seat to the left
- 2:48:07of the plate one and one the
- 2:48:08other Jerry Harrison waiting on
- 2:48:22deck.
- 2:48:24Vinsky is the next schedule
- 2:48:26batter here in the ninth inning
- 2:48:28Tigers lead at six at nothing
- 2:48:29one out Chicago batting
- 2:48:32Wilcox has a perfect game and
- 2:48:36the right hander delivers.
- 2:48:37He's got a three and a foul back
- 2:48:39to the screen.
- 2:48:42One into the count on Squires
- 2:48:46Wilcox has been behind only on a
- 2:48:48couple of batters.
- 2:48:49He got behind a three and oh on
- 2:48:54Carson fifth leading off in the
- 2:48:56sixth inning and got him on
- 2:48:57strike.
- 2:49:00That was his biggest obstacle
- 2:49:03that he got by in this
- 2:49:05game so far now I say one two
- 2:49:08pitch the Squires.
- 2:49:09He takes the wide one to the
- 2:49:12count on him one out in the
- 2:49:16ninth inning a no hitter and a
- 2:49:20perfect game on the line for
- 2:49:21Wilcox two more batters to go
- 2:49:30squires with a two to count on
- 2:49:32him one out and a four to count
- 2:49:35on him.
- 2:49:35He's got a leaning in Wilcox has
- 2:49:39a sign here's the wind up is the
- 2:49:41fifth Squires takes it is
- 2:49:43outside.
- 2:49:46Oh count on him.
- 2:49:47That was a breaking ball.
- 2:49:53Wilcox takes his cap off backs
- 2:49:57off the mound looks at the
- 2:49:59ball two spikes on the pitching
- 2:50:02plan scrapes around a little bit
- 2:50:05Squires back in the batter's

- 2:50:14first league has it on assisted
- 2:50:16out at first and one to go and
- 2:50:19Wilcox will have a perfect game
- 2:50:21on the line Gary Harrison will
- 2:50:29be inserted now as a fan batter
- 2:50:32in the ninth inning he's a
- 2:50:37quick batter he'll be batting
- 2:50:39left handed against Bill
- 2:50:40Wilcox and what a performance
- 2:50:44Wilcox has put on two down in
- 2:50:47the ninth inning the Tigers
- 2:50:49have been down to six and
- 2:50:51nothing twenty six batters in a
- 2:50:55row have gone down before the
- 2:50:56slant of Wilcox Harrison has no
- 2:51:01hits in six trips in the season
- 2:51:05looking for his first one the
- 2:51:08crowd on his feet the pit he
- 2:51:11swings face it to the field

- 2:51:38Jerry Parrott came to bat and
- 2:51:39bought it with two down in the
- 2:51:41night and Jerry Harrison does it
- 2:51:45here in Chicago taking the no
- 2:51:49hit perfect game bid out of the
- 2:51:52grass of Wilcox at the very last
- 2:51:55dramatic moment.
