- 0:39SPEAKER_09: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_09: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:48SPEAKER_09: Tristan, it is officially UT Hate Week.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: Dude, you've gotten good at that new intro.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: That was seamless.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Like you didn't even skip a step on that.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Well, wake, welcome.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Wake them.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: Wake him to UT hate work.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: Hate work.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Man, I was just complimenting on your smooth start while I and you just completely messed everything up right there.
- 1:10SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: Thank you for that.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Hurns down.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: That's all I gotta say.
- 1:15SPEAKER_09: Yes, horns down.
- 1:17SPEAKER_09: Uh, we play Texas this week.
- 1:19SPEAKER_09: Uh, it's uh it's a big week, it's a big week for tech fans, it's a big week for UT fans, especially considering this is one of the last times we're gonna play uh the Texas Longhorns in all sports, I imagine.
- 1:32SPEAKER_09: Um, and and we're talking to, of course, Kyle Umling, who most of you, if you are loyal talking tech listeners, absolutely despise.
- 1:40SPEAKER_09: He's a uh he's on Twitter, he gives us stats that we don't like, and um, you know, you you just you just don't like to listen to him.
- 1:48SPEAKER_09: But what we like listening to him.
- 1:51SPEAKER_09: Uh now me and Tristan like him.
- 1:53SPEAKER_09: He's a good guy.
- 1:53SPEAKER_09: He's a good guy.
- 1:54SPEAKER_09: Uh, you know, he just has that Twitter personality.
- 1:57SPEAKER_09: And if you only know him through Twitter, of course you're gonna hate him.
- 1:59SPEAKER_09: Um, but yeah, we have a great interview coming with Kyle to talk all things UT Tech.
- 2:04SPEAKER_09: Um, wanted to start off first with a quick um, you know, just thoughts and prayers to uh Bryce Ramirez, who um, you know, suffered that awful injury against NC State.
- 2:16SPEAKER_09: Um, just something you hate to see.
- 2:18SPEAKER_09: Um, football's a violent sport, we all know that.
- 2:21SPEAKER_09: Um, but when you see something like that happen to one of your own, it's just uh absolutely brutal.
- 2:27SPEAKER_09: And uh you hate it for the guy former walk-on was making his first start and uh uh you know wanted to wish him the best in his recovery.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: And man, especially with the the season he was shaping up to have.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, not that you know performance is everything, but he was really looking like he was gonna put a stamp on the program.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Um, just obviously a heart, heartbreaking way to go.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Um, but uh, you know, he was putting the body on the line for the team.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: And I mean, what more can you ask for a teammate?
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, and also props to NC State, you know, for uh being cool about it and giving all the support they can to him as well.
- 2:58SPEAKER_09: Yeah, no, NC State's been awesome.
- 3:00SPEAKER_09: Uh uh Coach Doran and uh another player, I believe, visited him in the hospital.
- 3:05SPEAKER_09: Um, you know, NC State's uh athletic and and training staff and everybody was there to help him out as as good as you can.
- 3:14SPEAKER_09: But um, you know, just seeing that seeing that type of injury, we've seen it plenty of times.
- 3:19SPEAKER_09: Joe Thysman, Alex Smith, you know, even basketball, Paul George and all that kind of stuff.
- 3:25SPEAKER_09: And it it never gets easy to watch.
- 3:28SPEAKER_09: Uh, me personally, I haven't seen it for one of the teams I root for, and that's what makes it even worse.
- 3:35SPEAKER_09: Um, because you just hate it for the kid.
- 3:37SPEAKER_09: And um, you know, uh again, we just wish him the best.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, man.
- 3:42SPEAKER_09: Well said, yeah, absolutely.
- 3:44SPEAKER_09: But um, let's uh let's talk a quick second about NC State before we talk about uh we talked to Kyle.
- 3:51SPEAKER_09: NC State, um listen, the defense played good enough to win.
- 3:55SPEAKER_09: They did.
- 3:56SPEAKER_09: Uh Tyree Wilson had a hell of a game, uh, Rabbit had a hell of a game.
- 4:00SPEAKER_09: Malik Dunlap played out of his mind.
- 4:02SPEAKER_09: Um, this defense is something different, it's something that we haven't seen at Texas Tech in a while.
- 4:08SPEAKER_09: Um, it's a bunch of guys that are not only talented, but really care about uh playing for this team and playing good football.
- 4:17SPEAKER_09: And I'm excited.
- 4:18SPEAKER_09: The defense is gonna keep us in a lot of games this year.
- 4:21SPEAKER_09: And um, the offense was bad.
- 4:23SPEAKER_09: We all know it.
- 4:24SPEAKER_09: Donovan made some mistakes, um, receivers made some mistakes, Kitley made some mistakes.
- 4:30SPEAKER_09: Um, you've already heard it all, but um you move on for this game, I think, in my opinion.
- 4:36SPEAKER_09: Um, I'm we're now five days removed from the game.
- 4:40SPEAKER_09: So uh, you know, we're not as emotional as we were as the game just happened or something like that.
- 4:45SPEAKER_09: You know, we were much more pissed off on on Saturday night and Sunday.
- 4:49SPEAKER_09: But you know, you look at this game as a learning tool for both Donovan, for uh the rest of the offense, for the play callers, for the coaches, everything.
- 5:00SPEAKER_09: Um you you lost to a good team.
- 5:02SPEAKER_09: That's straight up what it is.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: Perfectly said, man.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: It's uh I uh it's the first loss of a new coaching tenure, so that's always a little tough to swallow because the honeymoon phase starts to kind of drift off a little bit whenever reality really starts to set in that you know you are going to lose, it's going to happen.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: So uh we got this first one under our belts, but you know, there was also a lot of positives, and we're kind of focusing on the negative here.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: Um, but let's go ahead and end it on the positives that this defense has surpassed every expectation we thought over the summer.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: We thought if we just be serviceable, we're good to go.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: But DeRooter has these boys really trying to change the image at Texas Tech University of what defense is.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: So I'm really proud of the way they're stepping up.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: They've held every team below any any threshold we can we can cover with our offense.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: So we cannot ask more than this team.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: So uh hopefully uh the other side of the ball picks it up, which is kind of weird to say for uh as a Texas Tech fan, but obviously there's a lot, there's a lot been going along wrong over there as well with injuries and such.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: So hopefully we can pace together a great game plan this week because uh we have a very big one on the horizon.
- 6:07SPEAKER_09: Yeah, and I mean the good news is Weston Wright is back this week.
- 6:10SPEAKER_09: Um, you get another guy over there at your left guard position um to just help against this UT defensive line, which we talked to Kyle about it, it's pretty darn good.
- 6:20SPEAKER_09: So um, you know, I think our teams are are very similar.
- 6:23SPEAKER_09: Uh, we're gonna talk about this uh in the Kyle interview, but um yeah, I think I think it's gonna be a fun matchup.
- 6:30SPEAKER_09: I don't think it's gonna be a blowout either way.
- 6:32SPEAKER_09: I think it's gonna be fun and it's uh it is a one of the last times UT comes to Lubbock and it's it's gonna be wild.
- 6:38SPEAKER_09: Sell out, red out.
- 6:39SPEAKER_09: Let's go.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: Selfishly, I'd like it to be a blowout a certain way.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Like, I wouldn't be mad about that.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Like, that's that's fine with me.
- 6:46SPEAKER_09: Yeah, no, I wouldn't hate it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_09: Listen, if Texas Tech wins by 50, I'm not gonna be mad about it.
- 6:51SPEAKER_09: What do you what do you want from me?
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: All I know is Texas Tech's done pretty well against UT in the year of 2022.
- 6:57SPEAKER_09: Yes, okay.
- 6:58SPEAKER_09: I I thought you were going a different way with that one, but yes, 2022.
- 7:02SPEAKER_09: We have kicked our butt.
- 7:03SPEAKER_09: All right, two wins in basketball, two wins in baseball, only one loss.
- 7:08SPEAKER_09: We're we're doing great.
- 7:09SPEAKER_09: Let's continue that trend in 2022.
- 7:11SPEAKER_09: We're gonna talk to our buddy Kyle Emleng.
- 7:14SPEAKER_09: Here's that interview.
- 7:16SPEAKER_09: All right, we are here with Kyle Emlang for the third straight year.
- 7:22SPEAKER_09: Uh, he's been on before every Texas, Texas Tech football game.
- 7:27SPEAKER_09: He continues to come on it.
- 7:29SPEAKER_09: We appreciate it very much.
- 7:30SPEAKER_09: Uh, Kyle, if you don't know, I don't know how you don't know him, but uh, if you're a Texas Tech fan, you absolutely hate him.
- 7:36SPEAKER_09: You hate his Twitter account, you hate uh all of his mess that he talks about Texas Tech.
- 7:41SPEAKER_09: Kyle, what is up, man?
- 7:43SPEAKER_09: Nothing much, Steven.
- 7:45SPEAKER_09: What's up with you?
- 7:47SPEAKER_09: Oh, dude, you know, just looking forward to one of the best games uh of the year in terms of football.
- 7:53SPEAKER_08: I tend to agree with that.
- 7:54SPEAKER_08: You know, it is always a hoot.
- 7:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah, last year was so much fun, and Tristan went down to Austin.
- 8:01SPEAKER_02: And uh oh man, dude.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: I was about to apologize for the delay on your inaugural guest plaque, uh with the you know the the the national guest championship uh 20 empty at the bottom for a little extra flair to it, but yeah, um unfortunately that's gonna be backed up again, Kyle.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: I hope you don't complain to our customer service.
- 8:25SPEAKER_07: That's fine.
- 8:26SPEAKER_08: Uh so uh last year you were you were gonna try and get a free beer from a random tailgate.
- 8:34SPEAKER_08: Did it work or not?
- 8:35SPEAKER_08: I don't remember what happened.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: Kyle, uh I'm I'm afraid to tell you that I, after a few breakfast juices, unfortunately forgot to find a free breakfast juice utilizing your identification uh cred.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: So I I'm gonna be honest here and say I didn't I didn't press it.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: And obviously after the game, I just wanted to get out.
- 8:57SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 8:59SPEAKER_09: Well, we're not here to talk about 2021.
- 9:01SPEAKER_09: 2021 is way in the past.
- 9:03SPEAKER_09: This is yeah, it's a hard one.
- 9:05SPEAKER_07: 2022 is gonna make 2021 look like I don't know, what another year.
- 9:11SPEAKER_09: It's gonna look, it's it's gonna look so much better.
- 9:14SPEAKER_09: It's gonna look so much better because we know that you know, hopefully Texas Tech will put up a uh a better fight than what we did last year.
- 9:21SPEAKER_09: Um let's talk about I before we talk about tech, Texas Tech.
- 9:26SPEAKER_09: Uh, we just saw in the news uh pretty recently, I think two days ago, um, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State have decided to end the bedlam rivalry, um, at least for the significant future, um, you know, an obvious effect of Texas and Oklahoma leaving for the SEC.
- 9:44SPEAKER_09: Um, Kyle, it seems like everything that Texas has with the remaining Big 12 schools is gonna diminish and just not be played anymore.
- 9:56SPEAKER_09: Uh, what are your thoughts on not playing schools like Texas Tech and Baylor and TCU and I mean I I think it's gonna suck just because we've been playing y'all for you know since the 60s.
- 10:08SPEAKER_08: Like it's it's you know, no one likes change.
- 10:12SPEAKER_08: So A right there, I just it's gonna be weird and creepy feeling.
- 10:17SPEAKER_08: Uh secondly, it's just a good, it's just a full it's just a good old time.
- 10:21SPEAKER_08: I love this.
- 10:22SPEAKER_08: I love the tech Texas uh game.
- 10:24SPEAKER_08: It's just I mean, usually it's in our favor, but it's always a good game, I feel like.
- 10:29SPEAKER_08: Even even the blowout, I it was it was still a it was still fun to watch.
- 10:34SPEAKER_08: You probably agree with that for me.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: For yourself.
- 10:38SPEAKER_08: Uh but like you know, uh two years ago, that uh overtime game, that was exactly what I th we we all thought it'd be and we what what we wanted to be.
- 10:49SPEAKER_08: That's what everyone wants it to be.
- 10:50SPEAKER_08: And I think it's gonna be a close one this year.
- 10:52SPEAKER_08: A lot of fun.
- 10:53SPEAKER_08: Um it's it's just gonna be weird not playing y'all again.
- 10:56SPEAKER_08: And you know, and and just the the basketball stuff, that storyline has really added to like the spice of this of this uh rivalry.
- 11:04SPEAKER_08: So like it's it's it's it's just gone.
- 11:06SPEAKER_08: It's just yeah, it's gonna start.
- 11:08SPEAKER_08: I I I thought there was like rumors that we're gonna sign on to play tech as like our one like main non-conference game, but I don't even know where that went.
- 11:18SPEAKER_08: I haven't heard about it in a little while.
- 11:20SPEAKER_08: So I don't know if y'all know anything about that, but I was looking forward to that.
- 11:24SPEAKER_09: But yeah, there was there was definitely talks that uh it it looks like there was an article that came out uh a couple weeks ago actually that mentioned that.
- 11:33SPEAKER_09: And originally when we talked to you last year, we were like, okay, this is gonna be like a continuous deal, like a 25-year deal tech, and Texas are gonna keep playing in the non-conference.
- 11:42SPEAKER_09: And now it looks like um, according to that article, um uh it looks like Texas officials have kind of backed off from that commitment.
- 11:51SPEAKER_09: Um, and I don't know if that's the SEC telling them, hey, don't keep playing Texas.
- 11:55SPEAKER_09: I don't know if that's Texas thinking uh, you know, they're they're a little too good to keep playing tech or what.
- 12:00SPEAKER_09: I I don't know.
- 12:01SPEAKER_09: It's uh it's a whole thing.
- 12:03SPEAKER_09: And I it does it what it looks like right now is that Texas and Texas Tech are not gonna play each other when Texas leaves for the SEC for a long, long time.
- 12:12SPEAKER_08: Damn.
- 12:14SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 12:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 12:15SPEAKER_08: Well, you know, that will just make March Madness even crazier and like college world series even crazier if we meet up, so it'll still be it'll still be good.
- 12:26SPEAKER_08: It just won't it just won't be on a annual uh level, which will suck, but yeah, for sure.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it it does suck because I mean we we all know that there's definitely teams that we'd rather see on an auto out of conference slate.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: I think that's one of the most exciting parts about a schedule coming out is seeing you know who's in those slots.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: And I mean, yeah, playing North Carolina State was is fun and all.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: And I mean, they're a great team, it would have been a great notch in the belt, but you know, it's it's it's different than playing, say, Texas AM or UT.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, those games obviously just mean way more to you as a fan, right?
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Because those are the people you go to work with, those are the people you go to dinner with and to to and people, the families you marry into.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: So it just it really sucks to see that part of college football and college sports in general be ripped away.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: And obviously, this bedlump thing is huge.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, my parents live in Oklahoma, that's an enormous deal up there, and just to see that get just get split away for you know, it's it the the the root of all evil, of course, but it just it just sucks.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Kind of a uh tough pill for all of us to swallow, no matter what side of the pill, uh the coin you're on.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: So it's just kind of it's just obviously we all we all universally say sucks.
- 13:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I mean it's even worse in Oklahoma because you know, like in Texas, there's like 12 FBS schools, tons of FCS schools.
- 13:43SPEAKER_08: It's fandom could be spread out a little bit, but like in Oklahoma, it's like it's like what Oakie State, Oklahoma, and like Tulsa.
- 13:49SPEAKER_08: That's it.
- 13:50SPEAKER_08: Like you're everyone there you know is one or the other, so yeah.
- 13:56SPEAKER_09: I mean, you it's weird.
- 13:58SPEAKER_09: Yeah, and you've definitely seen stuff like you know, you saw the backyard brawl get revived this year.
- 14:03SPEAKER_09: That was everybody went insane and it was awesome.
- 14:05SPEAKER_09: And you know, Pitt, West Virginia, and you hate to see that every couple years or uh not happen for every 10 years.
- 14:12SPEAKER_09: You want that to happen every year.
- 14:13SPEAKER_09: It's like you know, if y'all were to lose, you know, the AM game was a big deal for y'all to lose, and now you know, just think of if you lost the OU game every year.
- 14:21SPEAKER_09: I mean, it's just it sucks, right?
- 14:23SPEAKER_09: That would be yeah, yeah.
- 14:25SPEAKER_09: It's it's just uh it's it's just something with uh the state of college football that's disappointing, and we all know that, and it's good that you recognize that too, because I think there's a lot of people that are going to better situations, you know.
- 14:37SPEAKER_09: I mean, pretty uh it's a better situation going to the SEC.
- 14:42SPEAKER_09: You know, you're making more money, your program is in a better, you know, state or whatever.
- 14:46SPEAKER_09: Uh it's good what USC and UCLA are doing going to the Big Ten.
- 14:50SPEAKER_09: Uh, technically, it's good for the program, but it's not good for the camaraderie of college sports.
- 14:55SPEAKER_08: Yes, yes, for sure.
- 14:58SPEAKER_08: But but you know, it if anything, like uh I think all I think all it did was cement that the Pac-12 is gone.
- 15:08SPEAKER_08: Like they're because you know, Oregon and Washington are trying to talk to Big Ten still.
- 15:13SPEAKER_08: There's rumors of like the Arizona schools in Utah still coming to the Big 12, like it's they're they're down bad.
- 15:20SPEAKER_08: They're they're gonna lose everyone.
- 15:21SPEAKER_08: And it that puts the big that posts the Big 12 up in like the probably the fourth spot of like of like a new like power four in the future.
- 15:30SPEAKER_08: So I mean there is that.
- 15:32SPEAKER_08: I guess it's more separation between power and group of five schools, but um yeah, it I hate losing rivalries, I hate losing in-state schools to play.
- 15:44SPEAKER_08: You know, like you said, it's people you work with, people go to dinner with.
- 15:46SPEAKER_08: I you could like in in Texas, you can go to any like function and you'll see oh, you'll see someone who went to Texas State, you'll see a Baylor Bear, you'll see all walks of life there, and it's it's awesome.
- 15:57SPEAKER_08: It's just weird, like you don't play them anymore.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: So but I mean it it's it's you know, obviously it's interesting that you bring up the uh the the the nail into the Pac-12 heart with uh UCLA and USC leaving.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: People are obviously saying the same thing about the Big 12, but the Big 12 managed to uh patch back up.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: This isn't the Big 12's first rodeo, after all.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Um, we're just a cockroach that will survive any nuclear blasts and try to even attempt against uh that's that's probably the best uh description I've ever heard of the Big 12.
- 16:27SPEAKER_09: We won't die, we refuse.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh Philip Slavin of the of the 1012 always puts it so great.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: You know, what's like what's what's happening right now in college sports is not realignment, it's consolidation.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: So what what's what's happening is you know, while we're saying yeah, the Big 12's dying, but it's everybody in the Big 12 is also saying, look, if our ticket is punched to the new power to monster two, hyper two, whatever you want to call it, we're gonna go.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: So there's only two conferences that are even on solid ground anymore, if you even want to talk about it, which is kind of a weird state to be in.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: It's just it's probably the shakiest we've ever seen, the the structure of our favorite sports ever.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: So it's it's a bizarre time.
- 17:08SPEAKER_09: Yeah, definitely, yeah, definitely.
- 17:10SPEAKER_09: Uh Kyle, I'm curious because we we talked to you a little bit.
- 17:13SPEAKER_09: It was more fresh last year, obviously, because that was when all the news dropped.
- 17:16SPEAKER_09: But what do you think about the state of Texas?
- 17:19SPEAKER_09: Uh, the Longhorn program uh going into the SEC?
- 17:23SPEAKER_09: Do you are do you are you more positive?
- 17:26SPEAKER_09: Are you more negative?
- 17:27SPEAKER_09: Uh what are your kind of thoughts?
- 17:29SPEAKER_08: More positive, like you know, more uh better for recruiting, better for revenue, all that.
- 17:36SPEAKER_08: Um and it's it's kind of like a preemptive chess move to make sure you're in that what did Tristan say, hyper, hyper two, whatever.
- 17:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, uh you know, it's I think just looking out for that in itself and just having that safety net is worth whatever the move is.
- 17:53SPEAKER_08: I you know uh whatever the future of cost football is, you're in the SEC and Big Ten, you at least for now are you know you're gonna be at the top tier.
- 18:02SPEAKER_08: So uh so I guess in that respect, it was a good move.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Can you can you just imagine being a freaking uh Indiana or Mississippi State right now?
- 18:12SPEAKER_06: Like just the uh just absolutely relaxing, just being at the bottom and everything, just yeah, yeah, you're you're saying Rutgers and Vanderbilt are just loving their lives, geniuses, you know.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: It's like you got Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, you know, two like very uh very prominent programs going, what the hell?
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: Why are our trailer pitches connected to these trucks?
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: You know, it's like why?
- 18:39SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I mean, I mean, I do love this new Big 12 that it's gonna be in.
- 18:43SPEAKER_09: I think there's kind of a uh a new uh respect for each other in this new conference that's coming up because you know we can all we can all kind of team up and hate U-Ten for you, right?
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: And that's I mean, we've always done that, so now it's just so weird to us.
- 18:59SPEAKER_08: Uh yeah, I I I've been wanting to add Cincy and BYU for for years, and I think those are great ads.
- 19:06SPEAKER_08: Houston's a good ad, Central Florida on the up and up.
- 19:10SPEAKER_08: I think only one missing in that like region area is like probably Memphis is the next I would I would snatch it follows the Big 12.
- 19:16SPEAKER_08: I I've wanted like Memphis in there for a while.
- 19:18SPEAKER_08: So if you all can get Memphis, that'd be cool.
- 19:21SPEAKER_09: Well, I think I think um I think old new commissioner is is really trying to get some of those pack schools, and that's his top priority right now.
- 19:28SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I mean, and I think that's the smartest move.
- 19:31SPEAKER_08: Arizona, Arizona State, two amazing baseball historical programs, adding that to the Big 12, which is already like a new powerhouse.
- 19:38SPEAKER_08: Like that's that's very, very like similar and uh right up there with SEC, and they're like slate of historical good teams.
- 19:47SPEAKER_08: So yeah, like if you could add those guys, that'd be sweet.
- 19:50SPEAKER_09: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 19:52SPEAKER_09: So, okay, so your your whole thing, everybody knows this.
- 19:55SPEAKER_09: Uh, a bunch of Texas Tech fans obviously are gonna be listening to this podcast.
- 19:58SPEAKER_09: Um, they despise you from your Twitter personality, from your statistics that make us sad.
- 20:04SPEAKER_09: Um, but you know what we try to express uh is we know you uh as a person.
- 20:12SPEAKER_09: I you're this is the third time you've been on the podcast and you've been awesome every single time.
- 20:17SPEAKER_09: Um, but you know, you come out with a with some hard-hitting stats, a lot of uh historical stuff, a lot of uh, you know, because Texas has a long history of being good in football.
- 20:29SPEAKER_09: What I wanted to bring up specifically was the last um like uh 10 years.
- 20:34SPEAKER_09: You know, uh you think about when we fired Mike Leach when you guys fired Mac Brown, our schools have been pretty similar uh in football.
- 20:44SPEAKER_09: We've been I I was looking at some of the statistics.
- 20:47SPEAKER_09: Since we fired Mike Leach, Texas Tech has a 47% win percentage.
- 20:52SPEAKER_09: Now, yeah, that's not good.
- 20:53SPEAKER_09: It hasn't been good, hasn't been a good decade uh plus of Texas Tech football.
- 20:59SPEAKER_09: Since uh Texas fired Mac Brown, they have a 53 win percentage, so you know it's it's better, but it's not that much better, right?
- 21:08SPEAKER_09: I mean, we've both been very disappointing programs.
- 21:11SPEAKER_09: We both, since in the last 10 years, have had two NFL first-round picks, both Texas Tech and Texas have had two, the same numbers.
- 21:19SPEAKER_09: And uh, you know, from that aspect of it, I think a lot of Texas fans still kind of hang on to the past, you know, and think, hey, we you know, we are this blue blood program, but both of our schools have performed pretty similarly the last you know 10 so years.
- 21:35SPEAKER_08: Yeah, this is all Mac Brown's fault.
- 21:39SPEAKER_08: Uh he he made it, he was on his knees, made a deal with the devil during that Nebraska Big 12 championship game.
- 21:45SPEAKER_08: He's like, if I can just get this get this second back, Lord, I our Lord Demon Devil, I will I will succumb to your your lust and you can take my body and do whatever you want with the Texas program.
- 22:00SPEAKER_08: And so when he signed that deal with the devil, he was like, Oh, I'm gonna go to the natty, I'm gonna have a chance to win.
- 22:07SPEAKER_08: But what he didn't realize is the devil plays tricks on you.
- 22:09SPEAKER_08: So he was like, I'm gonna screw you starting the very next game.
- 22:13SPEAKER_08: So this is all his fault.
- 22:15SPEAKER_08: That's it's the only thing.
- 22:18SPEAKER_09: So I can't think of other facts.
- 22:20SPEAKER_09: You blame Mac Brown.
- 22:21SPEAKER_09: There's a lot of Texas Tech fans that put the Mike Leach curse uh on our university, so it's a uh a little similar.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: It was broken, yeah.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: Officially, we beat him.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: Demons have an exercise.
- 22:34SPEAKER_09: Yeah, all you guys have to do now is Texas needs to beat North Carolina in like a bowl game, yeah.
- 22:39SPEAKER_09: And then you're exonerated and you'll be better.
- 22:42SPEAKER_08: I I really thought that during this Bama game, I thought Bryce would would go down in the first like two minutes with like a similar Colton McCoy shoulder injury, or and then our programs would just flip-flop back to what they were.
- 22:55SPEAKER_08: Because like we basically started the the Bama dynasty.
- 22:58SPEAKER_08: That game started it, so it's our fault too.
- 23:01SPEAKER_08: This is all Mac Brown's fault.
- 23:03SPEAKER_09: We can blame both Texas and Texas Tech being bad at football on Mac Brown, officially.
- 23:09SPEAKER_08: So, yeah, so so we would have freaky fried it if that happened uh during the Bama game, but instead, who knows how much longer this is gonna go down.
- 23:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah, hopefully not much longer.
- 23:18SPEAKER_09: Uh you know, it's it's always better when uh, well, from our perspective, it's always better when Texas Tech is better at football.
- 23:25SPEAKER_09: Uh, and you know, you would say Texas.
- 23:27SPEAKER_09: Um, but speaking to that Bama game, speaking of this year's team, you know, um a lot of difference.
- 23:35SPEAKER_09: Uh, I think I've seen from UT, and I think a lot of difference I've seen from Texas Tech.
- 23:40SPEAKER_09: Uh, we're both in either, you know, the early years of a new head coach tenure, uh, somebody that we think is gonna turn the program around.
- 23:47SPEAKER_09: You know, we both said that we both had two miserable uh head coaching hires the last couple of years.
- 23:54SPEAKER_09: And um this is the guy that's gonna turn it around.
- 23:57SPEAKER_09: What have you seen from the Texas team this year that is improved or already showing better than what last year's SAR coach Texas team is?
- 24:08SPEAKER_08: Uh basically, uh, first is like Moxie.
- 24:11SPEAKER_08: Well we had so much Moxie in that Bama game.
- 24:14SPEAKER_08: Uh you know, last year's Texas probably still would have hung with them the exact same amount, but then at halftime, just they would have just taken the brakes off and just drilled us the rest of the game and probably gone up with like three scores, you know, um covered their spread and stuff.
- 24:33SPEAKER_08: Uh but just hanging on the entire game, just that in itself was um a giant change.
- 24:40SPEAKER_08: And then you saw it again in UTSA the very next week.
- 24:43SPEAKER_08: We were down by 10 in the second quarter, and then we held them to three points the rest of the game after that point.
- 24:50SPEAKER_08: So, you know, last year we couldn't go into halftime and change anything.
- 24:56SPEAKER_08: You know, they they were able to make uh adjustments, which is very helpful in football.
- 25:01SPEAKER_08: I've come to realize.
- 25:03SPEAKER_08: So so have them having the ability to do that, I'm already very excited for this this year because like half of those games last year that were those we were leading big in the first half and then lost, I would say half of them were very winnable if just a few things were tweaked.
- 25:18SPEAKER_08: And I think this this team is what those tweaks are.
- 25:21SPEAKER_08: So I think we'll win a couple of close games this year that we would have lost last year.
- 25:26SPEAKER_08: So right there is already a big jump in um wins on the season.
- 25:30SPEAKER_08: So yeah, I we're heading in the right direction.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: Sounds like uh he's talking about what we always wanted Cliff Kingsbury to do.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: Like he was like, the guy needs to make adjustments, like what's going on here?
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: You know, we we can have more than one game plan, Cliff, you know.
- 25:44SPEAKER_09: So yeah, we just need a few halftime adjustments, and um, you know, I've uh I'm it pains me to say this, but I have been impressed by what Texas did, especially against Alabama, you know, holding a team that uh that good.
- 25:58SPEAKER_09: Um obviously you're at home, so that helps.
- 26:03SPEAKER_09: Uh but but still you're holding uh uh a Nick Saban coached Alabama team to a one-point victory.
- 26:10SPEAKER_09: I mean, it's it's a difficult thing to do, and but we've seen Texas kind of play up to their competition before, you know.
- 26:17SPEAKER_09: They played yeah, they played the LSU game.
- 26:20SPEAKER_09: Yeah, exactly.
- 26:20SPEAKER_09: I was just yeah, the LSU game.
- 26:22SPEAKER_09: We've seen them beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, you know, we've seen them play pretty good games when they're playing good competition, but it's just the consistency of you know showing up every week.
- 26:33SPEAKER_09: And uh, you know, what are your kind of thoughts on this year's team doing that?
- 26:37SPEAKER_09: Um I think because I mean we've already seen, you know, it was a close game against UTSA.
- 26:47SPEAKER_09: If you went out and played the same game that you played against Alabama with the same fight, the same heart, yeah, you know, you wouldn't you should have killed UTSA.
- 26:56SPEAKER_09: Right, right.
- 26:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah, well, so I I mean I guess we'll find out in the tech game because you know, tech um if we do continue with the same like um defense and stuff, uh like our new standard, then this game shouldn't be close.
- 27:13SPEAKER_08: But if it's old Texas, if it's um yeah, if if it's old Texas, it's it's close game no matter who we play.
- 27:21SPEAKER_08: So I think if it's gonna be like a back and forth kind of thing, I think oh it's kind of hints of old Texas.
- 27:28SPEAKER_08: If if we get a lead and keep it the lead the entire time, then I'll say, oh, it's a new Texas.
- 27:34SPEAKER_08: So um we'll have to see.
- 27:36SPEAKER_08: I think tech tech is a good test on uh what the rest of the year will hold for sure with Texas.
- 27:43SPEAKER_09: Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:44SPEAKER_09: I think uh I I think this is a pretty uh, you know, looking at both teams, obviously Texas has you know a great recruiting class every single year.
- 27:54SPEAKER_09: They have some unbelievable talent.
- 27:56SPEAKER_09: You look at Bijan Robinson, obviously, you look at Xavier Worthy.
- 27:59SPEAKER_09: Um, you know, you have some real pieces on this year's team, uh, but you also had B.
- 28:04SPEAKER_09: John Robinson and Xavier Worthy, and he went five and seven last year.
- 28:08SPEAKER_09: So it's it's it's just utilizing that talent, and that is what Texas has not been able to do.
- 28:14SPEAKER_09: And I think that's what tech fans are a little, you know, we're envious of it because we don't get the number one and number two recruiting classes in the Big 12 every single year, but yet, you know, Texas does, and they they haven't been able to do much with it, and I'm sure that's what frustrates you and what frustrates a lot of Texas fans as well.
- 28:34SPEAKER_09: Yeah, and so it's it's gonna be interesting to see how they come out with each game because the talent is always there with Texas, right?
- 28:42SPEAKER_08: It's always there.
- 28:42SPEAKER_08: Talent, yeah, talent's never been an issue, recruiting's never been an issue, it's I guess coaching.
- 28:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you know, so yeah, uh that's why we keep that's why we keep trying new coaches.
- 28:53SPEAKER_09: Yeah, exactly.
- 28:54SPEAKER_09: And so we're we're both on uh, you know, I think we're on pretty similar uh wavelengths right here in terms of we really believe in our coaches.
- 29:02SPEAKER_09: I don't know what you're I what are your thoughts on Sark?
- 29:05SPEAKER_08: Oh, I I've I've I love I liked the hire.
- 29:08SPEAKER_08: I thought it was a great hire.
- 29:10SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, everyone would throw out, oh, he he's this is his average win-loss record every time you say coach, and it's like, oh, it's like seven and six or eight and five.
- 29:19SPEAKER_08: You know, it's not it's not great.
- 29:21SPEAKER_08: Oh uh but you know, he I I like his like the culture he's bringing, I like his attitude towards the players.
- 29:27SPEAKER_08: I I like how he's offensively like uh he puts the offense like as a priority, like he wants a high-powered offense that can score on anyone, and I I like watching you know uh high scoring games, so I think that fits in perfectly with what I want to see from my team.
- 29:45SPEAKER_08: Because like, you know, if we if if say we were like uh Purdue and like Indiana, you know, like some of those games are like three to seven, or you know, so I I I I prefer high-powered offense, so I'm glad he's on board.
- 30:02SPEAKER_08: I'm glad he likes to do crazy things and try new things.
- 30:06SPEAKER_08: So um, yeah, I love him.
- 30:10SPEAKER_09: Absolutely, and and I think you should.
- 30:11SPEAKER_09: I mean, second year of your head coach, Tristan.
- 30:14SPEAKER_09: I want to ask you from a tech fan's perspective, what are your thoughts on Joey Maguire going into this game?
- 30:22SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, like I you know said over and over again that the guys has an immense fan buy-in, you know, and that that matters, that means something, and he's really built up that credit, which is why I don't think you've seen anybody give up on him at all.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: You know, fans are so reactionary, and TechStech's not an exception to it.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: Obviously, you can have the psychos are saying he's no different from Al Wells, but um, I still feel really good about him, I still feel really confident, and I think the sellout uh proves that.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: You know, if if if if the fans weren't still bought in, this wouldn't be a sellout, even though it is UT.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: I mean, obviously it's one of the biggest games of the season, but it wouldn't, it doesn't always just sell out just because it's UT.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's if you suck, you suck.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: And if you don't believe in your coach, you don't believe in your coach.
- 31:05SPEAKER_02: So it's I do, I do think that the fans are still so fired up for uh Joey Maguire just because he's no, he's a different cat, man.
- 31:12SPEAKER_02: He really he really brings a different sort of energy to Lubbock that's been missing, you know, since maybe what early Cliff.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: So I I really like it.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:21SPEAKER_09: Yeah, absolutely.
- 31:22SPEAKER_09: I I mean you uh people that have listened to us know our thoughts on Joey Maguire.
- 31:26SPEAKER_09: We're not after one loss to a ranked top 16 NC State team in Raleigh, we're not ready to quit on old Joey.
- 31:34SPEAKER_09: Um, but this is this is gonna be a real test because if you're a Texas tech coach and you beat UT, you're automatically you know put up in the Hall of Fame.
- 31:44SPEAKER_09: Um it's just I now I'm not I'm not gonna sugarcoat it.
- 31:48SPEAKER_09: We don't beat y'all very often, and you know that, and everybody else knows that some strange juju spice, man.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: I want whatever Kansas has.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: Like, what the heck is it, dude?
- 31:56SPEAKER_09: It really is.
- 31:57SPEAKER_09: I mean, you look at that stat that I said earlier.
- 31:59SPEAKER_09: Uh, UT's won 53% of their games since they fired Mac Brown.
- 32:03SPEAKER_09: That's a long time.
- 32:04SPEAKER_09: I mean, that's there's no reason that we should keep losing to you as much as we keep losing to you, and it's just this weird juju, man.
- 32:12SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it's y'all, y'all are two and ten since we started our worst decade or our worst period of football.
- 32:18SPEAKER_08: Like, I just don't understand.
- 32:19SPEAKER_09: This is also one of our worst periods of football, so we gotta we're we're on the same wavelength here, okay?
- 32:24SPEAKER_09: Yeah, uh, but you know, it's man, you need a win Saturday, guys.
- 32:30SPEAKER_08: Yes, we do, man.
- 32:31SPEAKER_08: Souls.
- 32:32SPEAKER_09: I'm telling you, I'm telling you.
- 32:33SPEAKER_08: Hopefully, you don't get it though.
- 32:35SPEAKER_09: Well, listen, I understand that from your perspective, but uh, we start three and one in the first year of a new head coach when most people were expecting us to start one and three.
- 32:46SPEAKER_09: I think that's pretty pretty damn solid.
- 32:48SPEAKER_09: And having this game in Lubbock, does that scare you even a little bit?
- 32:51SPEAKER_09: I know we haven't won a lot in Lubbock.
- 32:53SPEAKER_08: It doesn't, it doesn't because it doesn't because it's at uh what 2:30.
- 32:57SPEAKER_08: It was at nighttime, terrified.
- 33:00SPEAKER_08: Daytime, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:02SPEAKER_08: Cute little uniforms, but nighttime is scary.
- 33:05SPEAKER_08: I I hate Lubbock at nighttime.
- 33:07SPEAKER_08: I those games, it's probably it's probably Crabtree's fault, but I hate night primetime games against tech in Lubbock.
- 33:14SPEAKER_08: It's no, not for me.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, but that's that's definitely one thing we're really looking for with Joey McGuire, right?
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's been a while since you know people have been like, don't want to go to Texas Tech.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just we used to be one of those feared places, and unfortunately, just you can't live up to that reputation when you suck.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: So I really hope that this is the start of defending the home court, you know.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: Nice, yep.
- 33:33SPEAKER_09: Yeah, exactly.
- 33:35SPEAKER_09: Um, yeah, there's been a lot of talk about your quarterbacks.
- 33:38SPEAKER_09: Um, you know, obviously Quinn Ewers going down in the uh Alabama game.
- 33:42SPEAKER_09: He was having a fantastic start to the game and unfortunately took the same sort of injury that our first string quarterback, Tyler Shuck, suffered.
- 33:49SPEAKER_09: Same thing, collarbone.
- 33:51SPEAKER_09: It sucks.
- 33:51SPEAKER_09: It sucks to see your starting quarterback go down.
- 33:54SPEAKER_09: Um what are kind of the I know Sark is very uh he does not want to talk about it.
- 33:59SPEAKER_07: He doesn't want to talk about anything.
- 34:00SPEAKER_09: He hates it, he hates talking about quarterbacks, he hates talking about giving any team any sort of advantage over whatever.
- 34:06SPEAKER_09: Right.
- 34:06SPEAKER_09: Uh, but we've seen some people are saying Quinn Ewers is is practicing, he could potentially play.
- 34:14SPEAKER_09: What's what do you think?
- 34:15SPEAKER_08: He is he's ahead of schedule.
- 34:17SPEAKER_08: Like they they initially said six weeks, and now it's like, oh, it's week by week, and now he's like ahead of schedule.
- 34:24SPEAKER_08: So people are saying, oh, he might play against tech, but I I don't think Sark would rush him in that fast and risk do something worse and you know not getting that lucky.
- 34:35SPEAKER_08: Uh so I I think he's healing fast, but I don't think he'll be rushed back in.
- 34:39SPEAKER_08: I think we'll still I think if anything, maybe like OU weekend is my thought.
- 34:44SPEAKER_09: So you're thinking it's gonna be Hudson card against tech.
- 34:47SPEAKER_09: Um I think what's your confidence meter?
- 34:50SPEAKER_08: Well, my confidence meter is definitely higher with uh yours, but you know, he's uh still done okay.
- 34:57SPEAKER_08: You know, I think he's done better than he did last year, you know, not just sucking up as soon as the game starts.
- 35:06SPEAKER_08: Um like uh that Arkansas game was like the dagger and like the hunting card fan base.
- 35:13SPEAKER_08: So uh but he he he did fine against UTSA, played the whole game.
- 35:17SPEAKER_08: You know, I thought like the third string might start or something or switch with him, but he played the whole game, won it.
- 35:22SPEAKER_08: I saw him scramble on on a two and twenty where like he's like he has an ankle injury, but and when he's when he's doing those sprints, like you can't even tell.
- 35:31SPEAKER_08: So uh he's giving it his all I know.
- 35:33SPEAKER_08: So that makes me like him.
- 35:35SPEAKER_08: So until Quinn's back, he's he's I think he can pull it off.
- 35:40SPEAKER_08: Hopefully, Quinn's back by OU though.
- 35:42SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 35:42SPEAKER_09: Is there still a nervousness though around Card?
- 35:45SPEAKER_09: Because I feel like there is what the UTS Yeah, yeah.
- 35:48SPEAKER_08: Just because we we watched him just crumble and fold last year, so it's like it's hard to like give that image or get that image out of your head when he's on the field.
- 36:00SPEAKER_08: So and then like and then you see like the night and day difference when yours came out and he went in at first, and you know, like you you can notice why he's like second string and not the first string.
- 36:09SPEAKER_08: Um so it uh he's just missed that little that little something that yours has.
- 36:14SPEAKER_08: And um, and then with last year, yeah.
- 36:17SPEAKER_08: So I'll put all that together, and it's it does make it hard to have faith in himself.
- 36:21SPEAKER_08: But I think I think a solid win here will restore some of that for a lot of people, hopefully.
- 36:27SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I I we'll see.
- 36:29SPEAKER_09: I really have no idea.
- 36:30SPEAKER_09: I have no scope on this game, and I I normally I have like a feeling, or I have you know, just some analytical analysis or something like that.
- 36:38SPEAKER_08: But I I tend to agree with you that that that's why I said I think it's gonna be close this year.
- 36:42SPEAKER_08: Like, yeah, I I just just the way these teams are like matching up, you know, like y'all's um offensive line is newish, so is ours.
- 36:52SPEAKER_09: Uh we're and we're very similar teams.
- 36:55SPEAKER_08: Our defensive lines are that's why I can't.
- 36:57SPEAKER_08: That's why I I don't like if there was any kind of spread on this, I would like not take it.
- 37:02SPEAKER_08: Like, you don't it's it it could be one score game, it could be back and forth the entire time.
- 37:06SPEAKER_08: Who knows?
- 37:07SPEAKER_08: It's gonna be weird.
- 37:08SPEAKER_09: Yeah, I mean, uh we're we're both playing our starting or our backup quarterback.
- 37:12SPEAKER_08: Right, yeah.
- 37:14SPEAKER_09: We're both playing an offensive line that is pretty shaky to start the year.
- 37:18SPEAKER_10: Yep.
- 37:18SPEAKER_09: Uh, we're both have fantastic defensive line showings.
- 37:21SPEAKER_09: Uh, you know, ours played really good against C State.
- 37:24SPEAKER_09: Y'all's obviously played very good against Alabama.
- 37:26SPEAKER_09: Um, and I I we're just really similar to the game.
- 37:29SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and y'all and y'all always have quarterbacks that can sling it.
- 37:31SPEAKER_08: We know that.
- 37:31SPEAKER_08: Always have good receivers.
- 37:33SPEAKER_08: So yeah, it's uh it's it's gonna be interesting.
- 37:36SPEAKER_11: Yeah, unfortunately, I had one go down last game, but yeah, yeah.
- 37:42SPEAKER_09: I mean, we'll we'll see.
- 37:43SPEAKER_09: I think it's gonna be it's gonna be fun.
- 37:45SPEAKER_09: Uh, this game is always fun.
- 37:47SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 37:48SPEAKER_09: Let's let's talk about predictions, okay?
- 37:50SPEAKER_09: Because obviously we have two Texas Tech guys here, we have uh uh a Texas guy here.
- 37:55SPEAKER_09: Uh, we're gonna be a little biased.
- 37:56SPEAKER_09: We always are right.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, but and there's no bias on this podcast.
- 38:01SPEAKER_09: There's no bias, only pure analytics.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, objective takes here.
- 38:08SPEAKER_09: Let's start with Kyle.
- 38:10SPEAKER_09: You're the guest.
- 38:10SPEAKER_09: Sure.
- 38:11SPEAKER_08: What's your score prediction?
- 38:12SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, I could see 35-32 Texas.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: Okay, that's a good, that's a good prediction.
- 38:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that's that's solid, yeah.
- 38:21SPEAKER_08: That's a solid prediction.
- 38:23SPEAKER_08: I think it's a little lower than most people think, but I think those inexperienced OLs against those more experienced DLs, I think that'll make the score a little less.
- 38:32SPEAKER_08: So that's why I want that.
- 38:34SPEAKER_09: All right, Cherson, what you got?
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: All right, so this is uh this is a pretty significant game, more so than normal.
- 38:40SPEAKER_02: It could be the last time the horns come to the the Yano Esticado, the West Texas Plains and Lubbock, Texas there.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Last time they see the tortillas fly for a while.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: And you know what?
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: Let's uh how about I just match Kyle's at 35-32, Kyle, Texas Tech.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: How about that?
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: Damn, wreck of tech, baby.
- 39:03SPEAKER_09: I think I I listen, I respect both of y'all's opinions very much.
- 39:07SPEAKER_09: So um, this game is gonna be much lower than what y'all are saying.
- 39:12SPEAKER_09: This score.
- 39:13SPEAKER_09: Uh, both both of these defenses are much better than the others' offenses, especially with Hudson Card and Donovan Smith's showing what Donovan Smith's done this year.
- 39:23SPEAKER_09: This game is gonna be 21 to 20, Texas Tech.
- 39:27SPEAKER_09: Uh now it uh again, we're all saying it's gonna be a close game.
- 39:31SPEAKER_09: We're all saying it's gonna be exciting, it's gonna be fun, it's gonna be one of the best games of the college football weekend, which is awesome.
- 39:39SPEAKER_09: Right now, from me and Tristan's perspective, we obviously need this to go our way because this is going to be one of the last times we play y'all uh ever, you know.
- 39:49SPEAKER_09: And and and so I have to I have to predict a win for tech.
- 39:53SPEAKER_08: Yes, for sure.
- 39:54SPEAKER_08: I I totally agree with that too.
- 39:55SPEAKER_08: Like uh, I wanted nothing more than that win against AM because I was like, who knows when we'll play next.
- 40:01SPEAKER_08: At least we have this for however many years.
- 40:04SPEAKER_08: So, yeah, I agree.
- 40:05SPEAKER_08: Getting a win here would be sweet.
- 40:07SPEAKER_02: Let's have it be on a last-minute field goal like y'all did too.
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: Like, let's just repeat it exactly.
- 40:12SPEAKER_06: Oh my god, we're done.
- 40:14SPEAKER_06: Don't even whisper that into the into the don't no, please shout it into existence.
- 40:19unknown: I appreciate that.
- 40:23SPEAKER_09: No, but um, you know, either way, we all agree it's gonna be a fun game, it's always a fun matchup.
- 40:28SPEAKER_09: Uh there's a little it bothers me and Tristan and a lot of tech fans.
- 40:33SPEAKER_09: There's a there's a a lot of people from the Texas fan base that don't consider this a rivalry or don't want to uh you know acknowledge that Texas tech is a thing and just say, hey, we're Texas, we're not bothered by you.
- 40:46SPEAKER_09: What do you what do you think about those people that kind of say that kind of stuff?
- 40:49SPEAKER_09: Because you see it on every Twitter thread.
- 40:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_08: Um, I don't know.
- 40:53SPEAKER_08: I think they're maybe kind of in denial.
- 40:55SPEAKER_08: I don't know.
- 40:55SPEAKER_08: But yeah, because like, you know, you don't choose you don't choose your family, you don't choose your rivals.
- 40:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah, like it's like it just happened from playing each other so much, it's turned into like it.
- 41:05SPEAKER_08: I you know, I don't think there's any way you could say it's not some sort of rivalry.
- 41:09SPEAKER_08: So if people say that they're they don't have to talk about, yeah, for sure.
- 41:16SPEAKER_02: I I think it's always said at a jest, like it's just a jab, you know, to be like, you know, well, we don't care, but you know, here I'm gonna say something, even though I don't care, you know, kind of kind of thing.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: It's just right, yeah.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: I think that's more of how it goes.
- 41:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I I don't care, but but like tech, I really, really want to beat them.
- 41:35SPEAKER_08: I don't care, but it feels better, a lot better, if we beat them, you know, in any game.
- 41:42SPEAKER_08: So that that feeling, I you have to say that's a rivalry of some sort, right there.
- 41:47SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 41:48SPEAKER_09: What what I'm glad we haven't done so far on this podcast is do the normal Twitter interaction between a Texas Te and a Texas fan, and saying, Hey, you guys stink, hey, we beat you in football 70 to 35.
- 42:00SPEAKER_09: Hey, we made a bowl game and you didn't.
- 42:02SPEAKER_09: Hey, we the link continues, right?
- 42:06SPEAKER_09: Hey, we have the overall history over you.
- 42:09SPEAKER_09: It's so tiring.
- 42:10SPEAKER_09: Every single Twitter thread, it happens with some, and I fell victim to it through the pods account with some Texas burner the other day.
- 42:18SPEAKER_09: I was like, Oh my god, why am I doing this?
- 42:20SPEAKER_09: I should be making dinner, I shouldn't be arguing with this guy who's got a king in the hill obvi going on right now.
- 42:27SPEAKER_09: But but Kyle, you're one of the real ones, and I say that sincerely because nice, I uh what you have gum on this podcast and said every single time is exactly what we feel is it's a rivalry between Texas and Texas Tech, and it's a game that both of us care about and that both of us really want to win.
- 42:46SPEAKER_09: And we're not pretentious in any way saying we don't care about one or the other.
- 42:50SPEAKER_09: This is how college sports should be, and I appreciate that about you.
- 42:53SPEAKER_08: Yes, thank you so much.
- 42:55SPEAKER_08: I yeah, I that's why I love coming on here.
- 42:57SPEAKER_08: Y'all are uh basically me in the wrong colors, basically.
- 43:02SPEAKER_02: Or the right colors, somebody is so much a sexier color, and you know it.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: I mean, come on, you see a beautiful woman.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: Oh, look at that orange dress on her.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: Give me a break, Kyle.
- 43:16SPEAKER_08: Oh my god.
- 43:18SPEAKER_08: I guess you're right.
- 43:19SPEAKER_08: Red and black is sexier for sure.
- 43:22SPEAKER_09: You heard it here first, Kyle.
- 43:23SPEAKER_09: I'm like, says red and black are better colors than orange, orange, and black.
- 43:28SPEAKER_08: No, no, okay.
- 43:29SPEAKER_08: You want you watch any like like classic like high school uh football movie, and like the bad team is always like basically looking like tech when they come out, like all the evil, mean bad teams in all those movies.
- 43:41SPEAKER_08: So black is good, is a scary color.
- 43:44SPEAKER_09: Red and black, baby.
- 43:45SPEAKER_09: We love it.
- 43:46SPEAKER_09: Okay, Kyle, we couldn't have gotten you on here without talking about Chris Beard.
- 43:50SPEAKER_09: Um, okay, sure.
- 43:54SPEAKER_09: We could I I know the football game is happening this Saturday, but um, you know, since we've Last spoken um Texas Tech has swept Chris Beard.
- 44:04SPEAKER_09: He's your basketball coach now, which is fine.
- 44:10SPEAKER_09: I don't really know where I'm going with this.
- 44:12SPEAKER_09: I just I just wanted I just wanted to say.
- 44:21SPEAKER_08: First year last year, not a bad, not a bad start to the year.
- 44:24SPEAKER_08: Finally got us a freaking March Madness win.
- 44:28SPEAKER_08: You know, people have been just, you know, if if you think you see a lot of Kansas speech on football posts on tweet on Twitter, there's a lot of y'all haven't won a game in however many years.
- 44:39SPEAKER_08: It sucks.
- 44:40SPEAKER_08: So at least he got us that.
- 44:41SPEAKER_08: I think that's a great start to his tenure here, however long that may be.
- 44:45SPEAKER_08: Uh I think he's heading in the right direction.
- 44:46SPEAKER_08: We'll see.
- 44:47SPEAKER_08: I think obviously sophomore year as a coach is like your time to you know show who you are.
- 44:53SPEAKER_08: So we'll see.
- 44:54SPEAKER_08: If he if we suck this year, I don't know.
- 44:58SPEAKER_08: I don't think we will.
- 45:00SPEAKER_08: I think we'll be the same or better.
- 45:02SPEAKER_09: So yeah.
- 45:04SPEAKER_09: I mean, listen, that's our dream for him to suck because yeah, right.
- 45:08SPEAKER_06: He did want nothing more.
- 45:09SPEAKER_09: I think he committed the ultimate, the ultimate sin of being a Texas Tech head coach.
- 45:14SPEAKER_09: You left for Texas, that's the ultimate sin.
- 45:16SPEAKER_09: And so, you know, I think people are people will say, um Texas fans, I should say, would say, um, Texas Tech is obsessed with Chris Beard.
- 45:30SPEAKER_08: I think I I know I had people last year creeping me out in my DMs about Chris Beard.
- 45:39SPEAKER_08: I'm like, guys, I I don't care this much.
- 45:41SPEAKER_08: Leave me alone.
- 45:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, just ever just anytime Texas would lose, anytime, especially after like the two games.
- 45:47SPEAKER_08: It was it was bad stuff.
- 45:49SPEAKER_08: Tech hates Beard.
- 45:51SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's it's one of the worst I've seen.
- 45:55SPEAKER_09: Scary.
- 45:55SPEAKER_09: Yeah, it's scary.
- 45:57SPEAKER_09: And and listen, he committed the cardinal sin.
- 45:59SPEAKER_09: I'm not gonna blame anybody now.
- 46:01SPEAKER_09: Sliding into Kyle Umlang's DMs, I don't know about all that, but uh but it was lovely.
- 46:08SPEAKER_09: Uh, me and Tristan were in Austin for the game where we beat y'all um in in basketball.
- 46:14SPEAKER_09: Uh, and so that was obviously you know sweet relief and sweet justice uh to see.
- 46:19SPEAKER_09: But um, you know, uh all things considered, I think right now both fan bases are pretty happy, you know.
- 46:26SPEAKER_09: Y'all won a tournament game, and we swept Chris Beard and went a little further than him.
- 46:30SPEAKER_09: So I and I think both teams the win-win for both teams, yeah.
- 46:33SPEAKER_09: Yeah, exactly.
- 46:34SPEAKER_09: And both teams are set up for success.
- 46:35SPEAKER_09: Mark Adams is an unbelievable head coach.
- 46:37SPEAKER_09: Chris Beard is doing good things in Austin, so uh I think yeah, I think we can kind of squash it for a little bit.
- 46:44SPEAKER_09: We're obviously gonna boo the hell out of him whenever he comes back to Lubbock, but um, I you know, I I just wanted to get your thoughts on on what you feel about Chris Beard.
- 46:52SPEAKER_09: Yeah, so um oh uh by the way, we beat y'all in baseball last year.
- 46:58SPEAKER_07: Yes, I am aware somehow that somehow that steal at home popped up today on the target.
- 47:04SPEAKER_09: Kurt Wilson.
- 47:05SPEAKER_09: Kurt Wilson, what a guy.
- 47:06SPEAKER_09: We lost Tristan for a bit, so I guess it's just you and me here.
- 47:10SPEAKER_09: Um, but Kyle, listen, you rock.
- 47:14SPEAKER_09: I I've always said it from the talk and tech podcast.
- 47:17SPEAKER_09: We don't talk mess about Kyle Omlay, we just don't, because you put statistics out there that are favorable to Texas fans.
- 47:26SPEAKER_09: You have built a brand off yourself, you've become a best-selling author because of that.
- 47:31SPEAKER_09: Uh, you know, and what what has it been like since you released the book and since uh, you know, you developed this following?
- 47:37SPEAKER_09: How you know that what is it like being Kyle Umling these days?
- 47:41SPEAKER_08: Oh, I mean, uh uh when I went to the Bama game, it was a lot of fun.
- 47:46SPEAKER_08: Uh just random people stopping me saying, Hey, what's up?
- 47:49SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it was just cool.
- 47:51SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 47:53SPEAKER_09: Absolutely, man.
- 47:54SPEAKER_09: Well, that's awesome.
- 47:55SPEAKER_09: That's awesome.
- 47:56SPEAKER_09: Um, you know, you're you're always a favorite guest here on the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 48:00SPEAKER_09: Um wanted to get your as we do on the Talk and Tech Podcast every week.
- 48:07SPEAKER_09: Uh, we've already gone over UT score predictions.
- 48:09SPEAKER_09: We've already talked about the rivalry, we've already shot the bull for a good amount of time here.
- 48:13SPEAKER_09: What's your song of the week here for the people?
- 48:15SPEAKER_09: Because we can all we can all come together on good music.
- 48:18SPEAKER_09: And I I need I need a good song recommendation from you.
- 48:21SPEAKER_08: Uh yeah, that this one just keeps I keep it keeps make making me do great workouts.
- 48:26SPEAKER_08: Uh when it every time it comes on, I just feel awesome.
- 48:28SPEAKER_08: So I'm recommending this one for everyone.
- 48:30SPEAKER_08: Uh, I'm on one by future and Drake.
- 48:34SPEAKER_03: I'm a plan pressure in the field, giant man.
- 48:40SPEAKER_03: But that's another sport.
- 48:42SPEAKER_03: Caught me a yellow one like Fabin.
- 48:44SPEAKER_03: 425 to stone check everything.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Come on, one.
- 48:48unknown: Come on.
- 48:50SPEAKER_09: I like that.
- 48:52SPEAKER_09: Very nice, man.
- 48:53SPEAKER_09: Um, I'm trying to think of the first one.
- 48:55SPEAKER_09: I know the first one you gave us was uh the chicks, it was gaslighter.
- 49:00SPEAKER_09: Oh, yeah, because I think is a great song, and then I think you gave us a rock song on the second one.
- 49:05SPEAKER_09: So now you're going a little more hip-hop, a little more good stuff.
- 49:09SPEAKER_09: Um, you know, we we we appreciate that.
- 49:11SPEAKER_09: We always appreciate a good song of the week choice.
- 49:14SPEAKER_09: Um, Tristan, your song of the week.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: All right, Kyle and Steven.
- 49:18SPEAKER_02: This has been a great conversation and obviously gonna be a great game with a great tech win.
- 49:24SPEAKER_02: And after that tech win, I'm going to blare this song.
- 49:28SPEAKER_02: And it's gonna be kind of a theme song once Texas is gone into the SEC.
- 49:33SPEAKER_02: It is How Do You Like Me Now by Toby Keith back to the 90s with the big world being together.
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: Uh conclusion comes to an end here.
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: How do you like me now?
- 49:45SPEAKER_02: Toby Keith.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: That's a great one.
- 49:50SPEAKER_01: How do you like me?
- 50:01SPEAKER_09: Gotta love it.
- 50:02SPEAKER_09: Gotta love a good Toby Keith anthem.
- 50:04SPEAKER_09: Uh, it's always a banger.
- 50:06SPEAKER_09: Um, how do you like me now?
- 50:08SPEAKER_09: We're both we both could say that, you know, like Texas leaving for the SEC.
- 50:12SPEAKER_09: They could say, How do you like me now?
- 50:13SPEAKER_09: Texas Tech is still here, and we're like, hey, how do you like us now?
- 50:17SPEAKER_09: Okay, we're ready to run this conference over here in the Big 12.
- 50:20SPEAKER_09: So that's a good choice, Tristan.
- 50:22SPEAKER_09: My song of the week.
- 50:24SPEAKER_09: Um, I listened to it a few times, and everybody should probably know it by this time if you've watched college football.
- 50:29SPEAKER_09: It's from that coors like commercial with the two mascots.
- 50:33SPEAKER_09: Um, it's just such a uh just from the commercial, you love it.
- 50:37SPEAKER_09: It's called It Don't Get Better Than This by Royal Deluxe.
- 50:41SPEAKER_09: I looked it up, I shazammed it because it's such a smooth jam.
- 50:45SPEAKER_09: And after we lost NC State, I was like, I just want to relax, okay?
- 50:48SPEAKER_09: Because I'm pissed off and I just need something to calm my brain.
- 50:52SPEAKER_09: And this song actually a banger.
- 50:54SPEAKER_09: So that was uh It Don't Get Better Than This, Royal Deluxe.
- 50:58SPEAKER_01: It don't get better than this, no, it don't get better than this.
- 51:05SPEAKER_01: It don't get better than this, no, it don't get better than this.
- 51:14SPEAKER_09: Right here.
- 51:15SPEAKER_09: Course life, please sponsor the talk and tech podcast.
- 51:20SPEAKER_08: That would be dope.
- 51:22SPEAKER_09: It would be dope.
- 51:23SPEAKER_09: It would be dope.
- 51:24SPEAKER_09: Uh, but Kyle, thank you so much for coming on this podcast.
- 51:28SPEAKER_09: Uh, this is your this is your third straight year, and I hope to continue as long as you'll be there as long.
- 51:34SPEAKER_08: Yep, yeah, I'll be here as long as they play.
- 51:36SPEAKER_09: Absolutely, man.
- 51:37SPEAKER_09: Well, hey, uh, here's your chance to plug everything that you're doing, everything that you want to tell the people uh about.
- 51:43SPEAKER_09: So uh just tell us what what's Kyle Umling up to.
- 51:46SPEAKER_08: Uh, you know, follow me on Twitter.
- 51:48SPEAKER_08: I'm the guy with the cartoon head sunglass that you've been seeing all week on Twitter, so follow him.
- 51:55SPEAKER_08: Um if you have any Aggie friends, I have two books, 101 facts about Aggies, uh, on Amazon.
- 52:03SPEAKER_08: They make great gag gifts for your AM frenemies.
- 52:08SPEAKER_08: And yeah, just come shoot me a demon if you have any stat suggestions or if you need any help with anything.
- 52:17SPEAKER_07: I don't know if you want that, man.
- 52:20SPEAKER_08: I don't know if you want that.
- 52:20SPEAKER_08: No, I I I get people all the time asking for uh stat stuff.
- 52:25SPEAKER_08: So yeah, if you if if you have any crisp beard takes or or stat stuff, just message me.
- 52:32SPEAKER_09: Well, actually, Tristan Tristan wanted to ask this earlier.
- 52:35SPEAKER_09: What's the weirdest DM you've got?
- 52:38SPEAKER_09: Um it could be cringy, it could be just like just what's going on here.
- 52:45SPEAKER_08: It was a tech, it was a tech guy.
- 52:46SPEAKER_08: I will say that.
- 52:47SPEAKER_08: Dang it!
- 52:47SPEAKER_07: Right on, recommend but um right on.
- 52:50SPEAKER_07: It's even two opposite reactions.
- 52:52SPEAKER_08: We we I I we we we had we had we had just gotten beard, and maybe he had taken a player or something that it was either between tech and Texas, and he chose Texas or something, but y'all, it was it that had just popped on the timeline.
- 53:06SPEAKER_08: This guy DMs me and he's like, You're gonna pay for this, you know exactly who the what this means to me.
- 53:13SPEAKER_08: And I was like, What?
- 53:14SPEAKER_08: I was like, whatever.
- 53:15SPEAKER_08: And so um, I just ignored him, and then he'd and then he messaged me like a few minutes later saying something random, like, I hate your your face, and then I would go to respond like lol or whatever, but he would block me, so I couldn't.
- 53:28SPEAKER_08: I'm like, oh okay, why not?
- 53:30SPEAKER_08: He's gone.
- 53:31SPEAKER_08: Ten minutes later, he messaged me again.
- 53:34SPEAKER_08: I like you know, something weird, like I wanted to pee on you, and then I would go to respond.
- 53:38SPEAKER_08: He blocked me again.
- 53:39SPEAKER_08: So I was like, Oh, so I couldn't stop him from uh from sending me, he continued sending me stuff.
- 53:46SPEAKER_08: It was none of it made sense, it was all random and weird, and just he was just I think he was on a rager, downward spiral, just uh taking it out on me for some reason.
- 53:54SPEAKER_08: But um, and then finally, uh I timed it right where he had unblocked me and I went and blocked him, so he couldn't send me more.
- 54:01SPEAKER_08: But it was just so weird.
- 54:02SPEAKER_08: I was like, this is too much work.
- 54:04SPEAKER_09: I mean, for for somebody to keep timing it, saying, Hey, I'm gonna send this guy a message and unblock him, and then block him right after.
- 54:13SPEAKER_09: And then it's just like, okay, you're trying a little too hard here, buddy.
- 54:17SPEAKER_09: But yeah, I do think I I and I know we're continuing with this podcast, but um, I do think people kind of take it out on you a little bit because you're kind of the face of UT Twitter, right?
- 54:28SPEAKER_09: You know, there's like a few sort of like UT accounts that you're just like, okay, I freaking hate that guy because he's a Texas Longhorn fan.
- 54:34SPEAKER_09: And so I'm sure you definitely got your fair share of crazy DMs.
- 54:38SPEAKER_08: Yes, for sure.
- 54:40SPEAKER_02: They're all my burner accounts, Kyle.
- 54:42SPEAKER_08: It wouldn't surprise me, Tristan.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 54:47SPEAKER_09: Tristan's got at least 30 burner accounts.
- 54:50SPEAKER_09: Everybody with a with a uh it makes sense.
- 54:54SPEAKER_07: That that's why that's the only reason y'all won that uh that fan poll.
- 54:57SPEAKER_07: All of his burners.
- 54:58SPEAKER_06: That's all Tristan's burners.
- 54:59SPEAKER_06: He's got like it's honest work.
- 55:01SPEAKER_06: His burners got burners.
- 55:04SPEAKER_09: It's honest work, but it's good work.
- 55:06SPEAKER_09: So all right, Kyle, man.
- 55:10SPEAKER_09: We appreciate you coming back.
- 55:11SPEAKER_07: Until next time, guys.
- 55:12SPEAKER_07: Yeah, absolutely.
