- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 14th of
- 0:15November and you have been kind enough to tap on play and here I
- 0:20am ready and waiting, waiting for this moment so that you and
- 0:24I can read a chapter of God's word together.
- 0:27Isn't this the most fascinating book of the Bible, the book of
- 0:30Acts as it charts Jesus course, spreading his word through his
- 0:34Spirit through the ancient world at that time and today.
- 0:40Today things get really expansive to this point.
- 0:44We've been following that group of apostles as they've been
- 0:47preaching in Jerusalem. But now there is some
- 0:50persecution. The believers scatter and they
- 0:52reach the ears of the most unlikely converts by the end of
- 0:56this chapter. And it's a wonderful, wonderful
- 0:59story that we get to share. So friends, buckle yourself in.
- 1:02Let us come along for the ride as we hear how the Holy Spirit
- 1:06is moving this incredible message of grace and a new way
- 1:11of being under the forgiveness of a loving God.
- 1:15As we read together Act chapter 8,
- 1:29Saul was one of the witnesses and he agreed completely with
- 1:33the killing of Stephen. A great wave of persecution
- 1:37began that day, sweeping over the church in Jerusalem, and all
- 1:42the believers except the apostles were scattered
- 1:44throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria.
- 1:47Some devout men came and buried Stephen with great mourning, but
- 1:52Saul was going everywhere to destroy the church.
- 1:55He went from house to house, dragging out both men and women
- 2:00to throw them into prison. But the believers who were
- 2:04scattered preached the good news about Jesus wherever they went.
- 2:09Philip, for example, went to the city of Samaria and told the
- 2:12people there about the Messiah. Crowds listened intently to
- 2:16Philip because they were eager to hear his message and see the
- 2:20miraculous signs he did. Many evil spirits were cast out
- 2:24screaming as they left their victims, and many who had been
- 2:27paralysed or lame were healed. So there was great joy in that
- 2:31city. A man named Simon had been a
- 2:34sorcerer there for many years, amazing the people of Samaria
- 2:38and claiming to be someone great.
- 2:41Everyone from the least to the greatest often spoke of him as
- 2:45the Great One, the power of God. They listened closely to him
- 2:49because for a long time he had astounded them with his magic.
- 2:54But now the people believed Philip's message of good news
- 2:57concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ.
- 3:02As a result, many men and women were baptised.
- 3:06Then Simon himself believed and was baptised.
- 3:10He began following Philip wherever he went, and he was
- 3:14amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed.
- 3:18When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria
- 3:21had accepted God's message, they sent Peter and John there.
- 3:25As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers
- 3:29to receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit had not yet come
- 3:32upon any of them, for they had only been baptised in the name
- 3:36of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John laid their
- 3:39hands upon these believers, and they received the Holy Spirit.
- 3:44When Simon saw that the Spirit was given, when the apostles
- 3:47laid their hands on people, he offered them money to buy this
- 3:51power. Let me have this power too, he
- 3:54exclaimed. So that when I lay my hands on
- 3:57people, they will receive the Holy Spirit.
- 4:00But Peter replied, may your money be destroyed with you for
- 4:04thinking God's gift can be bought.
- 4:07You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with
- 4:11God. Repent of your wickedness and
- 4:13pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your
- 4:16evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter
- 4:20jealousy and are held captive by sin.
- 4:24Pray to the Lord for me, Simon exclaimed.
- 4:27That these terrible things you've said won't happen to me.
- 4:31After testifying and preaching the word of the Lord in Samaria,
- 4:35Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, and they stopped in
- 4:38many Samaritan villages along the way to preach the good news.
- 4:43As for Philip, an Angel of the Lord said to him, go South Down
- 4:49the desert Rd that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza.
- 4:53So we started out and he met the treasurer of Ethiopia, a eunuch
- 4:57of great authority under the Candac, the queen of Ethiopia.
- 5:03The eunuch had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and he was now
- 5:06returning, seated in his carriage.
- 5:09He was reading aloud from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
- 5:13The Holy Spirit said to Philip, Go over and walk along beside
- 5:17the carriage. Philip ran over and heard the
- 5:21man reading from the prophet Isaiah.
- 5:23Philip asked, Do you understand what you are reading?
- 5:27The man replied, How can I unless someone instructs me?
- 5:33And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with
- 5:36him. The passage of scripture he had
- 5:38been reading was this. He was led like sheep to the
- 5:42slaughter, as a lamb is silent before the shearers.
- 5:45He did not open his mouth. He was humiliated and received
- 5:50no justice. Who can speak of his
- 5:52descendants, for his life was taken from the earth?
- 5:58The eunuch asked Philip, tell me, was the prophet talking
- 6:01about himself or someone else? So beginning with the same
- 6:06scripture, Philip told him the good news about Jesus.
- 6:10As they rode along, they came to some water and the eunuch said,
- 6:14look, there's some water, why can't I be baptised?
- 6:19He ordered the carriage to stop, and then went down to the water,
- 6:23and Philip baptised him. When they came up out of the
- 6:27water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away.
- 6:31The eunuch never saw him again, but went on his way rejoicing.
- 6:36Meanwhile Philip found himself farther N at the town of
- 6:39Azettus. He preached the good news there
- 6:43in every town along the way until he came to say, Saria.
- 6:57Ah Jesus, your message of forgiveness and salvation is so
- 7:01compelling. Let us never forget that here we
- 7:06are. So many of us have known your
- 7:08truth our whole lives and it can feel quite well, run of the
- 7:13mill, quite ordinary. But here we see people hearing
- 7:17that news about You and what You have done for them for the first
- 7:21time, and it moves them to their core, and they respond with
- 7:25faith and a deep desire to follow Your Word and Your
- 7:31teachings. Our Lord, let us be moved right
- 7:36now and all through our day, moved by the incredible news
- 7:41that You love us. You love us so much that Your
- 7:46Father sent you here so that you would die in our place and
- 7:51through that sacrifice you would forge a way for us to be able to
- 7:55stand before the heavenly throne, sanctified, forgiven and
- 8:01acceptable and that we can live forever in your glorious
- 8:06company. That is quite a message.
- 8:11Thank you for the life changing, life changing gift that you give
- 8:17us. We thank you for it.
- 8:19We pray that it would continue to blow our minds every day.
- 8:23We pray all of this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
