2:26
Speaker 4: into the show now from the Charleston Dirty Birds, my
2:28
Speaker 4: good friend Jill Garon. Jill, good morning, welcome to the show,
2:31
Speaker 4: Good morning, thank you, thank you for being here. Baseball
2:34
Speaker 4: is back and we'll be playing soon over at the
2:37
Speaker 4: ballpark for real. But this Saturday, unofficially, I guess the
2:40
Speaker 4: kickoff our first pitch as it were for the upcoming season,
2:44
Speaker 4: the Gomart Home Run Derby. Tell us about it.
2:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, we're excited. This is our second home Run Derby
2:49
Speaker 6: presented by Gomart. A lot of people think of home
2:51
Speaker 6: Run Derby's as kind of an all star break, but
2:53
Speaker 6: we decide to use it as a way to kick
2:55
Speaker 6: off the baseball season for a number of reasons. One, obviously,
2:57
Speaker 6: we want fans to get excited about the season opening
3:00
Speaker 6: days May second, but also this is a great opportunity
3:04
Speaker 6: to meet some of our new players. About eighty percent
3:06
Speaker 6: of the roster is new guys, and when gates open
3:10
Speaker 6: at five o'clock, every single one of our players will
3:12
Speaker 6: be there to sign autographs until about five thirty. It's
3:15
Speaker 6: the only time during season that you have access to
3:17
Speaker 6: every single player at once.
3:19
Speaker 4: Now, are you doing the for lack of a better term,
3:22
Speaker 4: VIPs form the communities taking part in the home run.
3:24
Speaker 6: Derby this year not this year, to be honest, not
3:26
Speaker 6: many of them were able to hit the ball out
3:28
Speaker 6: of the infield, so we decided to leave it to
3:30
Speaker 6: the professionals this year. But we do have something really
3:35
Speaker 6: exciting that's new this year. There is interactive voting for
3:39
Speaker 6: the bracket of who you think is gonna win. You
3:41
Speaker 6: scan the QR code, We're going to hand out a
3:43
Speaker 6: flyer and it's gonna be on the video board. You
3:45
Speaker 6: select you think is gonna win that round, and if
3:48
Speaker 6: you select correctly, immediately you'll be emailed a cube on
3:51
Speaker 6: for something like a free hot dog, a free soda,
3:54
Speaker 6: free popcorn. If you guess correctly in the championship round,
3:57
Speaker 6: you get a free ticket to opening Day.
4:00
Speaker 4: So how is the home run derby itself for the players?
4:03
Speaker 4: How is that going to work out this year? Howre
4:05
Speaker 4: you gonna do that?
4:05
Speaker 6: So there's gonna be six or eight I have not
4:07
Speaker 6: been given the names yet. All of our guys just
4:09
Speaker 6: showed up yesterday, so we're kind of scrambling right now,
4:11
Speaker 6: but we're gonna have six or eight guys. It's one minute,
4:17
Speaker 6: no two minutes of normal. The base balls are are
4:20
Speaker 6: presented by Army National Guard. The white baseballs are being
4:23
Speaker 6: hit for two minutes. If you hit one over the wall,
4:25
Speaker 6: it's a point, and then the last minute is our
4:27
Speaker 6: go Mart Green money balls. If you hit that over
4:30
Speaker 6: the wall, it's two points. And then after that it's
4:32
Speaker 6: like a normal home run derby where if you hit
4:34
Speaker 6: the most points most home runs, you move on to
4:36
Speaker 6: the next round.
4:37
Speaker 4: I mean, I would think that for the players too,
4:39
Speaker 4: this is kind of an exciting thing, kind of get
4:41
Speaker 4: them jacked up and ready for the season. Then, of
4:43
Speaker 4: course they're athletes, so they're going to be competitive with
4:46
Speaker 4: each other and whatever happens out on the field is
4:49
Speaker 4: going to carry on throughout the season and the locker
4:51
Speaker 4: rooms and things of that nature.
4:52
Speaker 6: Right exactly. I mean last year, one of our guys,
4:54
Speaker 6: Tilman Pugh, who participated, he said, this is his first
4:57
Speaker 6: ever home run Derby and he'd been a professional baseball
5:00
Speaker 6: player for over ten years and this is his first
5:02
Speaker 6: home run derby, so he was excited about it. And
5:04
Speaker 6: not just the guys that are participating. You see, if
5:07
Speaker 6: you watch the MLB Home run Derby, they get so
5:09
Speaker 6: excited just watching their teammates competing. And we're going to
5:12
Speaker 6: have that exact same issue with all the other twenty.
5:15
Speaker 4: I mean, there is into it in watching the MLB
5:18
Speaker 4: Home run Derby, as you said, Jill, there is into
5:20
Speaker 4: it as what the fans are some yep.
5:22
Speaker 6: Yeah, so I'm excited. It's always really fun to see
5:25
Speaker 6: the fans interact, to see the players interact not only
5:28
Speaker 6: with the fans, both each other, and it's kind of
5:29
Speaker 6: my personal first experience of seeing what the personalities are
5:33
Speaker 6: like on the team.
5:33
Speaker 4: Also, and you've said the boys are back in town now, yep.
5:36
Speaker 6: So a lot of them arrive between Monday and Tuesday
5:38
Speaker 6: this week. Today, we actually have our first scrimmage going
5:41
Speaker 6: on that's going to be in about an hour. So
5:44
Speaker 6: we're excited. Baseball's here.
5:45
Speaker 4: And as we talk about it every time we have
5:48
Speaker 4: you here to get ready for the season. The kind
5:52
Speaker 4: of baseball with the Dirty Birds that you don't have
5:53
Speaker 4: the traditional spring training where you're going off to Arizona
5:57
Speaker 4: or Florida or whatever. I mean, you train in town.
6:00
Speaker 2: Much they're doing.
6:00
Speaker 4: There are things in their respective hometowns. I get that,
6:03
Speaker 4: but as far as a collective unit, you're you're doing
6:05
Speaker 4: spring training here at the ballpark, right.
6:07
Speaker 6: So what the affiliates do, the major league affiliates do.
6:09
Speaker 6: They have their pitchers and catchers report in February and
6:12
Speaker 6: they're ramping up as a team with the Dirty Birds
6:14
Speaker 6: and other independent league teams. These pitchers are ramping up
6:17
Speaker 6: on their own and they're basically expected to be at
6:19
Speaker 6: ninety ninety five percent when they step foot in Charleston,
6:22
Speaker 6: which a lot of them are. And their first real
6:25
Speaker 6: quote unquote real game is April twenty fifth in Lexington, Kentucky,
6:28
Speaker 6: and our first one at home is May second.
6:30
Speaker 4: Of course, I'll have you on what day of the
6:32
Speaker 4: week is May second on it's a Friday. It's a Friday.
6:34
Speaker 4: So that's been our tradition for the last couple of years.
6:36
Speaker 4: You come in, you bring the managers in, you bring
6:38
Speaker 4: a couple of players, and we got a lot bigger
6:40
Speaker 4: studia now because we can get three of you in
6:43
Speaker 4: here and I think three in the in the isolation
6:47
Speaker 4: booth where Ryan is in there. So we'll bring the
6:49
Speaker 4: whole team if we have to in here. You've talked
6:52
Speaker 4: about the players that are that are coming in about
6:55
Speaker 4: eighty percent of them. I think you said there new
6:56
Speaker 4: Is that right? Okay? And so where are where are
6:59
Speaker 4: they coming from?
7:00
Speaker 6: All over the place? Again, I just got the official
7:02
Speaker 6: list yesterday, and so what's funny is not all the
7:05
Speaker 6: guys that are at spring training actually make the opening
7:07
Speaker 6: day roster, so it is kind of a bit of
7:08
Speaker 6: a tryout. In terms of other countries, we got some
7:11
Speaker 6: Venezuelan and some Cubans, Dominicans, a few Puerto Ricans, and
7:15
Speaker 6: then all over the country we have guys who have
7:17
Speaker 6: played in the Brewers' organization and the Angels organization. So
7:22
Speaker 6: it's again, I literally just got the names less than
7:24
Speaker 6: twenty four hours ago. So I'm still learning about the guys,
7:26
Speaker 6: but all all over the world.
7:28
Speaker 4: And that's one of the things I like about this affiliation, Jill,
7:32
Speaker 4: that the Dirty Birds have now is that these are
7:35
Speaker 4: guys that it's not just like you know when you're
7:38
Speaker 4: playing typical minor league baseball. You know, it's your eighteen
7:41
Speaker 4: nineteen year olds trying to work their web. You got
7:43
Speaker 4: a few of those, but you also get some guys
7:44
Speaker 4: who are like thirty, right, No, it goes all across
7:47
Speaker 4: the board.
7:47
Speaker 7: Right.
7:48
Speaker 6: Are the two names that I know of from last
7:51
Speaker 6: year that you might recognize. Kyle McGowan. He's a former
7:53
Speaker 6: big leaguer, and so is Kiva Sampson. They're both going
7:56
Speaker 6: to be in our starting rotation. So it's going to
7:58
Speaker 6: be great for some of our younger guys in their
8:00
Speaker 6: early twenties to be able to look up to these
8:02
Speaker 6: former big leaguers and talk to them. And then, like
8:05
Speaker 6: you said, we have these guys who maybe aren't trying
8:07
Speaker 6: to make it back to the league, and then we
8:08
Speaker 6: have some guys that are trying to make it back.
8:10
Speaker 6: So it's a really fun diverse group.
8:13
Speaker 4: Talking to Jill Garrin of the Dirty Birds, Dave Allen
8:15
Speaker 4: showing five eighty Live brought to you apart by Morgan
8:17
Speaker 4: and Morgan with more than twenty billion dollars recovered. They
8:19
Speaker 4: believe that when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgan and Morgan,
8:22
Speaker 4: America's largest injury law firm. We'll have you on, as
8:25
Speaker 4: I said on opening Day, maybe a couple times between
8:27
Speaker 4: now and then. Of course you're always on during the
8:30
Speaker 4: regular season. But for the fans, give us a little
8:33
Speaker 4: preview of what we can expect at the ballpark this summer.
8:37
Speaker 4: Anything new, anything exciting, anything gets you, get you all
8:40
Speaker 4: juiced up. What do we get?
8:42
Speaker 6: May is going to be packed. We have twenty home
8:44
Speaker 6: games in the month of May, so if it's good weather,
8:46
Speaker 6: come on out to the ballpark. There's going to be
8:47
Speaker 6: a lot of fun promotions, like always, every Friday has
8:50
Speaker 6: a giveaway. Opening Day is going to be a commemorative
8:52
Speaker 6: coin to celebrate our twentieth anniversary of the ballpark opening
8:56
Speaker 6: on the corner of Lewis and Moore Street, so we're
8:58
Speaker 6: excited about that. Every Saturaturday will always be fireworks as well.
9:03
Speaker 6: Sunday's kids twelve and under get in for free, so
9:05
Speaker 6: that's really exciting too. Other promotions are our staples are back,
9:10
Speaker 6: Woe making a Difference Night, African American Heritage Night, Celebration
9:14
Speaker 6: of Labor. But you can see all of our promotions
9:16
Speaker 6: at Dirty Words Baseball one.
9:18
Speaker 4: That I'm going to go ahead and throw out there
9:21
Speaker 4: right now. We're going to be doing our stations are
9:23
Speaker 4: gonna be doing a lot of stuff there. I'm gonna
9:25
Speaker 4: go ahead and give you a little sneak preview of
9:27
Speaker 4: something we're excited about. We're gonna be doing an eighties night.
9:30
Speaker 4: Oh yeah, with our sister station, of which I'm on
9:33
Speaker 4: that station two ninety eight seven of the Mountain Wild
9:35
Speaker 4: Wonderful Classic Rocket And anytime you put me and you
9:38
Speaker 4: put Steve Animal out there, and you put Shockley out
9:40
Speaker 4: there and we're out there enjoying little hair band music,
9:44
Speaker 4: eighties night's.
9:45
Speaker 2: Going to be.
9:46
Speaker 4: We'll be giving all the details on that, but we're
9:48
Speaker 4: seriously excited about that.
9:50
Speaker 6: Yep. That's a Saturday in August. I want to say,
9:52
Speaker 6: the first Saturday in August. So we're gonna have eighties
9:54
Speaker 6: music being played for the fireworks too. And the day
9:56
Speaker 6: before that is a shirt give away that I was
10:00
Speaker 6: also presented by the Mountain so we're excited.
10:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, we are excited. All right, let's get back to
10:05
Speaker 4: the home run derby before we let you go. I
10:07
Speaker 4: know you've got plenty of information about it on your

Speaker 6: So gates open at five o'clock. Remember, get here early

10:39
Speaker 6: I wish I could tell you that I've watched a

10:43
Speaker 6: as soon as baseball season hits for the rest of

10:48

10:49

Speaker 4: I know that you folks were down in McDowell County.
14:42
Speaker 4: Of course, we had our our thing we did out
14:44
Speaker 4: on the parking lot here where we asked for people
14:46
Speaker 4: to drop off donations. By the way, greatest listeners in
14:49
Speaker 4: the world that we have from all of our stations.
14:52
Speaker 4: I mean, we organized it, you know, Rob Real, Steve Animal, myself,
14:58
Speaker 4: you and Logan and all the folks here in the building.
14:59
Speaker 4: We organize it and you guys showed up, But it's
15:02
Speaker 4: the listeners that really did the heavy lifting and provided
15:07
Speaker 4: so much stuff. Talk about that just for a little bit.
15:10
Speaker 2: Yeah.
15:10
Speaker 12: So the first trip we filled a really large box
15:15
Speaker 12: truck full of air conditioners, do you humidifiers, shovels, I mean,
15:20
Speaker 12: anything that buckets cleaning supplies. And that was the first
15:24
Speaker 12: trip that we went down. That's been quite a few
15:28
Speaker 12: weeks ago. And then this week we were able to
15:30
Speaker 12: go down and present a check to an organization down
15:33
Speaker 12: there that is still helping with clean up. Yeah, and
15:37
Speaker 12: we were able to do that because of your listeners
15:39
Speaker 12: and what you guys did on that day and just
15:41
Speaker 12: an amazing, amazing time.
15:42
Speaker 4: Well, we want to make sure people realize that the
15:44
Speaker 4: need is still there. I mean we talked about it,
15:48
Speaker 4: Amanda and I did on the midday show last Friday,
15:50
Speaker 4: and I've told the story before. We thought it was
15:52
Speaker 4: going to be just this fun little segment about a
15:54
Speaker 4: restaurant that we do every Friday, we called the Lunch Spoty.
15:56
Speaker 4: We interviewing a gentleman down there what they called the
15:59
Speaker 4: Taco Mantaco Man, the Taco Man, and he was on
16:01
Speaker 4: the show and it turned, as Amanda said, we thought
16:04
Speaker 4: we were just going to talk about KSO and it
16:07
Speaker 4: turned into so much more because he told us about
16:09
Speaker 4: the need that those folks have down there and him
16:13
Speaker 4: closing his restaurant, and I mean he hooked up with
16:17
Speaker 4: the food bank across the street and cooked their food
16:19
Speaker 4: in his restaurant. And and yesterday on the talk line,
16:24
Speaker 4: I think it was no. Actually a couple of days ago,
16:26
Speaker 4: uh TJ and Dave Wilson did an interview with one
16:30
Speaker 4: of the county commissioners down there, McDowell County, and he
16:32
Speaker 4: talked about he's pretty strong words about how how much
16:35
Speaker 4: they need is there. And the reason I bring that
16:37
Speaker 4: up to you guys is because I know you were
16:39
Speaker 4: you were boots on the ground down there.
16:40
Speaker 11: Yeah.
16:41
Speaker 12: What I understand now is what they're needing is they're
16:43
Speaker 12: needing people to be able to build. I mean you
16:44
Speaker 12: think about all the small bridges going up in those
16:47
Speaker 12: hollers that people are using as their driveways or even
16:50
Speaker 12: you know, having to cross from those creeks. I mean,
16:52
Speaker 12: that's what they're struggling with now, is what I understand.
16:54
Speaker 4: Right, So you can help, yeah, and can they can
16:58
Speaker 4: they just contact you? I mean if they, I mean,
17:01
Speaker 4: give me your phone.
17:01
Speaker 12: Number nine two five zero three six six you can
17:05
Speaker 12: ask for me and we glad to uh, we'll be
17:09
Speaker 12: glad to get back into this fight with these folks around.
17:11
Speaker 4: I mean, like this battle has been going on really
17:14
Speaker 4: with the with the situation McDowell County. It's been going
17:17
Speaker 4: on before, before, before the floods, and now it's continued.
17:22
Speaker 4: And what happens is, unfortunately people come down and they
17:26
Speaker 4: help with the clean up. God bless them for doing that,
17:28
Speaker 4: But then they go back home and there's still I mean,
17:31
Speaker 4: the taco man told us a story about a lady
17:33
Speaker 4: that was having to walk six miles down the railroad
17:36
Speaker 4: tracks to be able to get to her doctor appointment,
17:38
Speaker 4: you know, and uh and and then he continues, Okay,
17:41
Speaker 4: so what do you guess here to talk about today? Lisa,
17:45
Speaker 4: So Jason fingers at each other. Women on a Mission,
17:48
Speaker 4: woman and missions.
17:48
Speaker 12: Coming up May seventh, Treasures Beyond Measure, Lisa, you want
17:53
Speaker 12: to tell them a little bit about what's going on
17:55
Speaker 12: with that?
17:55
Speaker 5: Sure?
17:55
Speaker 4: And Leasta, you are the chair of the board, is yeah,
18:00
Speaker 4: so so look alive.
18:01
Speaker 10: Yes, I'm trying the boys here.
18:03
Speaker 4: Yeah, but yeah, you're you're the you're the chair chairperson
18:06
Speaker 4: on the board here at Union Mission. Talk about women
18:08
Speaker 4: on a mission.
18:09
Speaker 5: Well, Women on a Mission is the lunch and we
18:11
Speaker 5: have every year to benefit the Union Mission but also
18:15
Speaker 5: honors some amazing ladies from our community. And it'll be
18:20
Speaker 5: May seventh this year at the Charleston Marriott from noon
18:23
Speaker 5: to one thirty. It'll the five ladies that we're going
18:27
Speaker 5: to be honoring this year are doctor Juliet Temple, Courtney,
18:31
Speaker 5: Laura Anita Purdue, Gene Simpson, and Kelly Woodyard. And last
18:37
Speaker 5: year we had almost three hundred and fifty people there
18:40
Speaker 5: and we're looking forward to a really great event again
18:42
Speaker 5: this year.
18:42
Speaker 4: And where can people get tickets for.
18:44
Speaker 5: That online at the Union Mission, Unia Mission dot com.
18:48
Speaker 12: We feed people dot com or Union Mission dot com.
18:50
Speaker 4: Talk about the criteria for these women that you're honored.
18:53
Speaker 4: What are they? What have they done well?
18:54
Speaker 5: We have a little committee that meets and we throw
18:57
Speaker 5: around names. There's so many women in our community that
19:00
Speaker 5: are very worthy of this honor, so it's really really
19:04
Speaker 5: hard to narrow it down, but one who's community minded.
19:08
Speaker 5: We focus on community service, on selfless service, on demonstrating
19:14
Speaker 5: kindness and just helping in our community. All of the
19:17
Speaker 5: women have great achievements, but we focus on service and
19:21
Speaker 5: what they do for our community.
19:22
Speaker 4: And how long have you folks been doing this?
19:24
Speaker 5: About six years? I think this is our sixth We
19:27
Speaker 5: had a several year stop because of the COVID But yeah, yeah,
19:32
Speaker 5: and the event is when and where May seventh, at
19:35
Speaker 5: the Charleston Marriott starting at New.
19:37
Speaker 4: Yeah, it sounds like you've got a great lineup of
19:38
Speaker 4: folks that you're honoring this year. Now in the past,
19:41
Speaker 4: you've you've honored a lot a lot of great ladies.
19:42
Speaker 4: We have great things. Yeah, yes, yes, So tell us
19:46
Speaker 4: about some of the other things going on with the
19:47
Speaker 4: Union Mission. We'll get back and we'll kind of wrap.
19:49
Speaker 4: We'll get back to women on the mission in the moment.
19:51
Speaker 4: But you guys are always you always get something going on.
19:53
Speaker 4: To tell me about some other things going on in
19:54
Speaker 4: Union Mission.
19:55
Speaker 12: Yeah, we're always broadening our footprint in West Virginia. We're
19:59
Speaker 12: still to not food to pantries all over the state,
20:02
Speaker 12: thousands of pounds of food. We are still running our
20:04
Speaker 12: addiction recoveries or behavioral health. We are still involved in
20:10
Speaker 12: homelessness and that's that's.
20:11
Speaker 4: A rough one.
20:13
Speaker 12: People all over the city are obviously dealing with that,
20:16
Speaker 12: and but it's something that where we are proud of
20:19
Speaker 12: of getting people into into housing on a regular basis,
20:23
Speaker 12: and you do a lot.
20:24
Speaker 4: One of the things I really like about the mission,
20:27
Speaker 4: if you will, of Union mission is when you talk
20:29
Speaker 4: about these things, a lot of times there's a stigma attached,
20:33
Speaker 4: and but you folks really specialize in helping people that
20:39
Speaker 4: want to help themselves. Sure, because of.
20:42
Speaker 12: The way we run our departments, there's there's an expectation,
20:47
Speaker 12: and you know, we don't want somebody coming into our
20:49
Speaker 12: shelter and just staying at that level in life. We
20:53
Speaker 12: want that person to come into our shelter and then
20:55
Speaker 12: get a ged and then get their job, and then
20:59
Speaker 12: save for a car, then say for an apartment, things
21:02
Speaker 12: like that, and that's that's that is the expectation.
21:04
Speaker 4: And what are some of the things that you do
21:06
Speaker 4: to work towards those expectations.
21:08
Speaker 12: So immediately during the assessment, we figure out the things
21:11
Speaker 12: that are barriers in life, meaning driver's license, meaning no
21:16
Speaker 12: birth certificate, no Social Security card, finds that they've had
21:19
Speaker 12: in their life and this is this is recovery and homelessness,
21:22
Speaker 12: by the way, and we want to start immediately removing
21:25
Speaker 12: those things in their life so they can start seeing
21:27
Speaker 12: hope and and some success. And then we we bring
21:31
Speaker 12: in organizations like Truists and Huntington Banks and they start
21:35
Speaker 12: teaching budgeting and practices, and we get them connected in
21:39
Speaker 12: our computer classes and we start teaching them Microsoft and
21:42
Speaker 12: if a lot of them already know that, but then
21:44
Speaker 12: then we talk about you know, resumes and such, and
21:47
Speaker 12: we just want to start that process of getting back
21:50
Speaker 12: into society.
21:52
Speaker 4: Talking again with the Jason Quadtrel and Lisa Pak from Union.
21:54

Speaker 4: the lab analysis, and an assessment report. Visit Pinnacle Corp
22:10
Speaker 4: dot net. Because what you don't know, Ken Hirshie, what
22:12
Speaker 4: are you guys doing over there? I mean, you know,
22:16
Speaker 4: I've been down to read it read a sponsor here
22:18
Speaker 4: and you guys are over here having way too much fun.
22:20
Speaker 4: That's one of the things one of the things I
22:22
Speaker 4: like about having you folks in the studio and when
22:23
Speaker 4: we team up on these projects Jason, as we've done
22:26
Speaker 4: in the past is let me say this to you, Lisa,
22:28
Speaker 4: you're Bloways doing a good job here. Okay, he's safe
22:31
Speaker 4: for a little while. I think because we have fun
22:33
Speaker 4: when we do these things. I mean, you're not always
22:35
Speaker 4: dealing with the most pleasant things, but we always when
22:39
Speaker 4: we're standing out on those parking lots, whether we're doing
22:41
Speaker 4: the the event we do with the sock Drop, or
22:44
Speaker 4: whether we are collecting items for the for the flood
22:47
Speaker 4: victims or whatever. You know, we do two three four
22:49
Speaker 4: things a year together. We always have fun.
22:52
Speaker 12: Hey, you're there six hours anyway, right, Yeah, yeah, and
22:55
Speaker 12: so you might as well make it fun. Yeah, might
22:57
Speaker 12: as well make it fun.
22:59
Speaker 4: So let me get back to you. Why are you
23:01
Speaker 4: involved in Union Mission?
23:03
Speaker 5: Well, I have been for about twenty years. I think
23:06
Speaker 5: my husband and I Larry, just have a heart for
23:08
Speaker 5: what they do. And you know, they've been around for
23:11
Speaker 5: one hundred and thirteen years. They truly helped the hurting
23:15
Speaker 5: people of West Virginia. That's kind of their slogo logo,
23:19
Speaker 5: and that's what they do. I see that that's what
23:22
Speaker 5: they do. Jason's built an amazing team that just have
23:26
Speaker 5: a heart for helping people.
23:28
Speaker 4: Yeah, a couple of weeks well, actually, I guess a
23:30
Speaker 4: couple of months ago, myself and Rob Reeal from our
23:33
Speaker 4: sister station ninety six one KWS, we got an invite
23:36
Speaker 4: to come out there and join you guys for lunch
23:39
Speaker 4: and to talk to your board about a little bit
23:43
Speaker 4: about ourselves, but more about you guys. And I was
23:45
Speaker 4: amazed when I went around the room and I talked
23:49
Speaker 4: to your employees there, I said, bored, but I really
23:51
Speaker 4: mean employees and about the things that they do and
23:54
Speaker 4: that they bring to the table. And when you looked
23:56
Speaker 4: around that room of what ten people, I'm going to
23:59
Speaker 4: guess thing that Rob and I took away from that
24:01
Speaker 4: was you had a room full of people that truly
24:04
Speaker 4: loved what they do and truly loved their job.
24:07
Speaker 12: Yeah. That's the thing that I love to do, is
24:10
Speaker 12: educate and teach those folks and build them up. About
24:13
Speaker 12: eleven our of our directors were there at the time,
24:16
Speaker 12: and and they all, my gosh, I mean, I mean,
24:19
Speaker 12: they are so passionate about about what they do. And
24:21
Speaker 12: I wanted you guys to see that. And it was
24:23
Speaker 12: easy to see, wasn't it.
24:25
Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean it was, and not just in it
24:26
Speaker 4: because you fed us. I mean we would have been
24:28
Speaker 4: there plus two though. Yeah, yeah, we would have been
24:31
Speaker 4: there anyway. But actually we got in in Jayce's truck
24:35
Speaker 4: and went up to the different facilities that are there.
24:37
Speaker 4: Explain to people where you are. For people that may not.
24:39
Speaker 12: Know, Yeah, we're at seven hundred South Park, right across
24:42
Speaker 12: from cemc Memorial. They used to call it back in
24:45
Speaker 12: the day, mission holler. You go up in the in
24:47
Speaker 12: the We're still there. We've got some building projects going
24:50
Speaker 12: on now, but you know, that's the location, been there
24:52
Speaker 12: for gosh since the fifties.
24:54
Speaker 4: I was impressed when we took our little tour up there,
24:57
Speaker 4: as you called it, mission mission holler, there at the
25:01
Speaker 4: things that you have going on up there, because I
25:03
Speaker 4: mean you were pointing to this building that building, saying Okay,
25:06
Speaker 4: we're we're planning this for here, and we're doing this here.
25:09
Speaker 4: And you wouldn't be able to do this if you
25:13
Speaker 4: weren't already doing great things in the community, and if
25:15
Speaker 4: you didn't have the buy in from the community a
25:17
Speaker 4: least I'm gonna let you talk about that a little bit.
25:19
Speaker 4: The buy in from some of these businesses and individuals
25:22
Speaker 4: that help out. That's a big part of it.
25:23
Speaker 5: It's a huge part of it. And even with this
25:26
Speaker 5: event that we're doing, this Woman on a Mission lunch,
25:29
Speaker 5: and that's what we've really tried to do is get
25:32
Speaker 5: businesses and folks in the community just and they do
25:35
Speaker 5: they buy in on what the Union mission that's doing
25:37
Speaker 5: and it just having sponsors helps us support the daily
25:42
Speaker 5: work of the mission and what they do.
25:44
Speaker 4: All right, here's the part that we put the plea
25:46
Speaker 4: out there. I mean, at this point, do you still
25:49
Speaker 4: need sponsors?
25:50
Speaker 5: We do still need sponsors. We have everything from two
25:53
Speaker 5: hundred and fifty dollars to five thousand dollars.
25:56
Speaker 4: Okay, is it if a business is listening right now?
25:59
Speaker 4: A lot of business owners listen to this show. If
26:00
Speaker 4: they're listening right now, can they still become a sponsor
26:03
Speaker 4: if you need later? By are you selling tables and
26:06
Speaker 4: that sort of way?
26:07
Speaker 5: We are selling tables at work. I will say that
26:09
Speaker 5: we are getting close to being sold out. I've probably
26:11
Speaker 5: got about three hundred folks so far. We can hold
26:14
Speaker 5: about three forty to three fifty, but we'd love to
26:18
Speaker 5: have more sponsors, all.
26:19
Speaker 4: Right, And how can they just reach out to Jason
26:22
Speaker 4: the the information you gave us earlier.
26:23
Speaker 12: Yeah, give us a call it three zero four nine
26:26
Speaker 12: two five zero three sixty six and we will get
26:28
Speaker 12: you to Lisa Pack and get you taken care of.
26:31
Speaker 5: Yes, and Dave could I think a few sponsors who
26:33
Speaker 5: knew what are very key. I would like to especially
26:38
Speaker 5: thank VANDEA Health c AMC. They have always been a
26:41
Speaker 5: very big supporter of the Union mission. And my husband
26:45
Speaker 5: Larry Pack and his business partner Steve White have been
26:48
Speaker 5: big supporters of the mission too. And this year we
26:51
Speaker 5: have Huntington Banks, garib Dental, Slango Law and Kurt Higgot
26:56
Speaker 5: the Kurt Higginbotham family have been very supportive. And I've
26:59
Speaker 5: got a wholely of other sponsors, but those are our
27:01
Speaker 5: big sponsors this year, all right, and.
27:03
Speaker 4: We'd like to add your business or you as an
27:05
Speaker 4: individual to that list. And there again, I'm sure Lisa
27:08
Speaker 4: you've got sponsor packages. But you'll also say if anybody,
27:11
Speaker 4: if you can, you can donate, you'll take it. You're
27:14
Speaker 4: go turn anything away.
27:14
Speaker 5: Right, That's right, that's correct, all.
27:16
Speaker 4: Right, give us the details again, but the time and
27:19
Speaker 4: the date and things of that nature.
27:21
Speaker 5: It is May seventh. That's a Wednesday at noon at
27:24
Speaker 5: the Charleston Marriott. Doors will open at eleven thirty. It
27:28
Speaker 5: should last about an hour and twenty minutes hour and a.
27:31
Speaker 12: Half, okay, And we know it's a time sensitive thing.
27:34
Speaker 12: It's a luncheon and we want everybody to know that
27:36
Speaker 12: we stick very close to that. Try to get everybody
27:38
Speaker 12: back out. Yeah.
27:39
Speaker 4: Yeah, And congratulations to those wonderful ladies that you mentioned
27:43
Speaker 4: there too, because there's some real real go getters in
27:46
Speaker 4: the Charleston community. And thank them for what they do
27:50
Speaker 4: as well.
27:50
Speaker 5: Yes, yes, it'll be a great day to get to
27:52
Speaker 5: hear a little bit from them and to honor them
27:54
Speaker 5: and just celebrate them.
27:56
Speaker 4: Guys. Always appreciate you having having you on the show,
27:59
Speaker 4: Lisa and Jay, and thanks a lot for being here
28:01
Speaker 4: and the best of luck with and then Jason, you
28:03
Speaker 4: and I will get together soon and see what we're
28:05
Speaker 4: getting into next. Sounds good because once I get you, know,
28:09
Speaker 4: I get me and you, and I get Rob Real,
28:11
Speaker 4: and I get Steve Animal involved, and I get Logan
28:13
Speaker 4: Scott and Stephen, Jenny and Woody and all the folks
28:15
Speaker 4: here we are I mean when and it's gonna sound
28:18
Speaker 4: like a commercial. But when you hear that tagline at
28:21
Speaker 4: at the top of our era every hour, this say
28:22
Speaker 4: is we're proud to live here too. We are proud
28:24
Speaker 4: at this company, wv RC Media, to be part of
28:28
Speaker 4: the community. This is a West Virginia owned and operated company,
28:31
Speaker 4: and we believe in giving back. It's not just promotion
28:34
Speaker 4: for us. I mean, we really do, and we appreciate
28:37
Speaker 4: you allowing us to do that.
28:38
Speaker 12: No, it's great. It's a great partnership. It's very easy
28:41
Speaker 12: to see your all's passion for the community and it
28:45
Speaker 12: only allows us, it gives us an outlet, it gives
28:47
Speaker 12: us an area to serve and uh and help more.
28:52
Speaker 12: I understand we're maybe coming this June. We're going to
28:54

32:24

32:55

32:59
Speaker 4: on Carl's podcast, which is just just crazy good. By
33:04
Speaker 4: the way, thank you, I appreciate it. Yeah, you guys
33:06
Speaker 4: just do a fantastic job with that podcast. What is
33:08
Speaker 4: it about the pot and let's talk to what's called
33:12
Speaker 4: with for NFL great Carle and Lisa Odie and yourself
33:15
Speaker 4: and other guests from time to time. What is it
33:17
Speaker 4: that you enjoyed about doing that podcast so much? It'll
33:19
Speaker 4: plug in for Carl.
33:20
Speaker 14: Well, what's strange is that you know Carle coach Carly
33:23
Speaker 14: he was my football coach at Westernia State. So it's
33:25
Speaker 14: my college football coach, so we'd have been having these
33:27
Speaker 14: talks for years. So this is just something that's, you know,
33:31
Speaker 14: come from what we used to do. So now we
33:33
Speaker 14: can do it on the radio and we have guys,
33:35
Speaker 14: so we can actually just dive deep into sports, not
33:38
Speaker 14: just about you know, what's going on in the field
33:40
Speaker 14: or the court, but also social issues and different things around.
33:43
Speaker 4: It's good stuff. I mean, it really really is. I
33:45
Speaker 4: love a good sports discussion. I can turn this show
33:47
Speaker 4: easily into a sports show every day, but they won't
33:49
Speaker 4: let me do that, all right, So I got to
33:51
Speaker 4: get back to the not so fun stuff sometimes. Yeah,
33:55
Speaker 4: let's go back to the legislature. Let's go back to
33:57
Speaker 4: the final night Saturday night. There were some, to put
34:01
Speaker 4: it mildly, some some tense moments in the closing hour
34:05
Speaker 4: of the legislative session. What did you make of the
34:07
Speaker 4: proceedings there towards the end, with the parliamentary procedures and
34:11
Speaker 4: things of that nature.
34:12
Speaker 14: It all had to do with DEI okay, talk about
34:14
Speaker 14: it again. It's supporting issue. Like I said, of my
34:18
Speaker 14: emphasis and what I wanted to talk about that night
34:20
Speaker 14: was about history and make sure we teach holistic history
34:23
Speaker 14: and when I say holistic history, we want to make
34:26
Speaker 14: sure that we teach all the parts that went into
34:29
Speaker 14: a historical event that we don't admit individuals or you know,
34:34
Speaker 14: situations that happened. So as far as the procedural rules,
34:38
Speaker 14: it just was really disappointing that you know, Delegate excuse me,
34:42
Speaker 14: Senator Garcia didn't allow he wasn't allowed to enter his amendments,
34:46
Speaker 14: and you know, they suspended the own rules that they created,
34:50
Speaker 14: which was Joint rules of three I believe, and you
34:53
Speaker 14: know just has was said, you know, implementing some dirty
34:58
Speaker 14: tricks in order to get that d I bill passed.
35:01
Speaker 4: You know, you hear the letters DEI, and I've talked
35:06
Speaker 4: about it on the show. I think sometimes that there
35:11
Speaker 4: is it's not how can I say this? Unlike other
35:15
Speaker 4: things that you folks in the legislature may focus on.
35:18
Speaker 4: Sometimes things are very concrete. You know, we're talking about
35:21
Speaker 4: something to do with voting, we're talking about something to
35:23
Speaker 4: do with business. You can look at it, you can
35:25
Speaker 4: say this is what it is. But when you put
35:28
Speaker 4: throw out those letters DEI, it seems to mean different
35:31
Speaker 4: things to different people. And I'm not taking aside one
35:35
Speaker 4: way or the other I'm just saying it's one of
35:36
Speaker 4: those rare things that you vote on that you talk
35:39
Speaker 4: to this senator or this delegate, and it means one thing.
35:42
Speaker 4: You talk to this senator or delegate, it means something else.
35:44
Speaker 14: Talk about that, And I guess you could say that
35:48
Speaker 14: I don't know if I necessarily agree with that. Okay,
35:50
Speaker 14: And again, just as I said on the floor, if
35:52
Speaker 14: you want to get rid of a diversity equity inclusion
35:54
Speaker 14: office at a university, I'm not for that. I do
35:57
Speaker 14: not support that, but fine, But I believe that this
36:01
Speaker 14: particular bill, it was overly broad and it went too far.
36:04
Speaker 14: Because what's going to end up happening, particularly has becomes
36:08
Speaker 14: teaching our kids in high school and middle school, particularly
36:12
Speaker 14: about history West Virginia history, World history, American history. I
36:16
Speaker 14: think some teachers are going to be hesitant to do
36:19
Speaker 14: that because in fear that they may offend, you know,
36:23
Speaker 14: certain people, and they may get reported. So I just think,
36:26
Speaker 14: you know, a bill like it, it goes too far.
36:28
Speaker 14: And when we just use those phrase, the DEI phrase,
36:31
Speaker 14: it becomes like this boogeyman and.
36:33
Speaker 4: What does it mean to you?
36:34
Speaker 15: What does the EI mean to you? To delgate Hollis Lewis,
36:37
Speaker 15: I just means it means including everybody. It means in
36:41
Speaker 15: it means learning a little bit about everybody. Far as history,
36:44
Speaker 15: it means, like I said, I use the furnent frame
36:46
Speaker 15: holistic history. It means that if I'm going to be,
36:49
Speaker 15: you know, working in the public sector, that I'm gonna
36:52
Speaker 15: be trained on cultural competency, so I know how to
36:55
Speaker 15: deal with individuals from all spectrums. Because for example, when
36:58
Speaker 15: you take a state like West Virginia, West Virginia has
37:00
Speaker 15: about four or five cultures just within it. You take
37:03
Speaker 15: southern West Virginia, you take the Eastern Pandahandle, the Northern
37:05
Speaker 15: pandahandle north central West Virginia, all different cultures, Charleston, it's
37:10
Speaker 15: all different cultures. So we have to even within our state,
37:12
Speaker 15: have to learn about one another. So it's just like
37:15
Speaker 15: learning those things about people that if you know in
37:18
Speaker 15: your community that you may not.
37:20
Speaker 4: Know, what would you say to those who have the idea.
37:23
Speaker 4: And I'm talking about not necessarily in the capitol dome.
37:26
Speaker 4: I'm talking about Joe or Joanne average, you know, just
37:29
Speaker 4: out on the streets or whatever, to think, well, DEI.
37:32
Speaker 4: It just gives people unfair advantages. You're going to be
37:35
Speaker 4: hired for a job just because you're a certain caller
37:37
Speaker 4: or just because you're this or that.
37:39
Speaker 14: What would you say to that, Well, I think number one,
37:41
Speaker 14: it's a merit base program anyway you look at it.
37:44
Speaker 14: So if you work at a law firm and they
37:46
Speaker 14: have a quote unquote DEI initiative, you still have to
37:49
Speaker 14: be an attorney, you still have to pass the ball,
37:51
Speaker 14: you still have to go to law school, so you
37:52
Speaker 14: still have to be qualified to get the position. So
37:55
Speaker 14: you're not going to get a position or be hired
37:57
Speaker 14: into a position in which you aren't qualified for. I
38:00
Speaker 14: think that you know, when we talk about dr or
38:02
Speaker 14: divarsity EQUI, including initiatives, we're just trying to round out.
38:06
Speaker 14: We're trying to get a more rounded perspective of the
38:09
Speaker 14: people that we have employed or the people that are
38:11
Speaker 14: in this program. So I think, and again it helps
38:14
Speaker 14: all it's not and I think too often we look
38:17
Speaker 14: at like black and white. Right, it's about women, it's
38:19
Speaker 14: about LGBTQ, it's about eighty eight individual veterans, veterans, it's
38:23
Speaker 14: about a bunch of people who were saying that if
38:26
Speaker 14: we have a veteran in a school that's going to
38:28
Speaker 14: make our school better. We have a woman in the
38:30
Speaker 14: police department that's going to make our police department better.

38:49
Speaker 4: better health Today, let's talk about delegate the session as
38:52
Speaker 4: a whole. Rate your satisfaction level on the session.
38:55
Speaker 14: Probably I would say, you know, I'm a professor West
38:58
Speaker 14: Viginia State, so I'm gonna go at d minors. You know,
39:01
Speaker 14: I think that you know, we were actually able to
39:03
Speaker 14: do some good things. I guess you could say, you know,
39:06
Speaker 14: far as of giving teachers more autonomy, as far as
39:09
Speaker 14: discipline is concerned, you know, we I think that one
39:14
Speaker 14: of the governor's initiative was I thought was okay, was
39:16
Speaker 14: one stop shot far as the permitting process. So if
39:19
Speaker 14: you are trying to get those permission can go online
39:21
Speaker 14: and do that and there's actually time and consideration interventions
39:24
Speaker 14: in the classroom, different things of that nature. One of
39:27
Speaker 14: my friend, Delegate Hall, the Saint Albans he had a
39:31
Speaker 14: full time dementia service director, which I think is an
39:34
Speaker 14: excellent idea. However, I don't think we adequately attack those
39:38
Speaker 14: kitchen table issues. When we talk at about you know,
39:41
Speaker 14: increased utility rates, when we talk about economic development, clean water,
39:45
Speaker 14: when you talk about those things that are going to
39:47
Speaker 14: affect West Virginia's everyday life, we still didn't really tackle
39:51
Speaker 14: those issues.
39:52
Speaker 4: Pia. It's still a huge problem. And we have a
39:55
Speaker 4: foster care issue in this time, we have a childcare
39:57
Speaker 4: issue in this state in general percentate, and I've heard
40:01
Speaker 4: a lot of people on both sides of the aisle,
40:04
Speaker 4: Republicans and Democrats that have said little was done there.
40:07
Speaker 14: Little was done, I mean, and again it's a huge problem.
40:10
Speaker 14: So that's not an easy fix, and that's not something
40:13
Speaker 14: that we can, you know, just fix overnight or even
40:16
Speaker 14: with a single bill. It's going to be something that
40:18
Speaker 14: systematically we have to get to the heart of. And
40:21
Speaker 14: and I think it's one of those things in which
40:23
Speaker 14: when we talk about our you know, kind of the
40:25
Speaker 14: elephant in the room here in West Virginia.
40:26
Speaker 4: We talk about our drug issue.
40:28
Speaker 14: We have to figure out a way to deal with that,
40:30
Speaker 14: not only far as treatment is concerned, but prevention, just
40:33
Speaker 14: a holistic treatment around that.
40:36
Speaker 4: The Governor delegate on the Midday Sure earlier this week
40:39
Speaker 4: said there will be a few special sessions. He alluded
40:42
Speaker 4: earlier as like the long hot summer. He did that
40:46
Speaker 4: early on, he said that the special sessions are coming
40:50
Speaker 4: for sure. What do you want to see covered in
40:53
Speaker 4: those special sessions?
40:54
Speaker 6: Again?
40:54
Speaker 14: I want to see, like I mentioned, I want to
40:56
Speaker 14: see utility race. I want to see us try to
40:58
Speaker 14: talk about p I. I want us to see us
41:01
Speaker 14: address clean drinking water. I want us to see I
41:04
Speaker 14: want to I want to see us help you know,
41:07
Speaker 14: counties like mcdalll County who are struggling not only with
41:10
Speaker 14: you know, the flooding that happened, but also their infrastructure
41:13
Speaker 14: and just where they're going to go from here. You know,
41:16
Speaker 14: once thriving county who's on the brink of being you know,
41:19
Speaker 14: taken over by the state. So we have to address
41:21
Speaker 14: those sort of issues. We have to address our you know,
41:24
Speaker 14: our economic issues. It's a bunch of issues we need
41:27
Speaker 14: to address here in Wes Virginia medicate all those sort
41:30
Speaker 14: of things.
41:31
Speaker 4: Do look before we let you go. I know you
41:33
Speaker 4: are someone who really engages with your constituents. You're a big,
41:37
Speaker 4: very big on social media. You're regularly, as we said,
41:40
Speaker 4: cheap plug for the podcast you and Carl and Lisa
41:43
Speaker 4: on let's talk. What do you hear from your constituents?
41:47
Speaker 4: I know the session just gallbled out, you know, at
41:50
Speaker 4: midnight on Saturday. But what have you heard so far
41:55
Speaker 4: from them about the session? And what do you hear
41:57
Speaker 4: from them on a regular basis, Just if you pass
41:59
Speaker 4: somebody in the super market or whatever, what do you
42:01
Speaker 4: hear about consent?
42:02
Speaker 14: I think a lot of people just don't understand what
42:04
Speaker 14: we're doing up there. I think they they're thinking of it.
42:08
Speaker 14: You know, I don't want to say a waste of time,
42:10
Speaker 14: but why aren't we tackling those important issues? Why are
42:14
Speaker 14: we spending so much time on you know, defining the
42:16
Speaker 14: man and woman or different things of that nature. Well,
42:19
Speaker 14: like I said, and I keep I hate to keep
42:20
Speaker 14: going back to it, but people are concerned about the
42:23
Speaker 14: grocery prices, the utility bills. You know, we have a
42:26
Speaker 14: large portion of our population who work at a state
42:29
Speaker 14: level government. Job and a PEI rates are rising and
42:34
Speaker 14: salaries aren't you know we we you know, when we
42:36
Speaker 14: talk about economic development development we introduce several recreational cannabis bills,
42:41
Speaker 14: adult use cannabis bills that you know went nowhere. So
42:44
Speaker 14: people are concerned about those issues, what we call kitchen
42:48
Speaker 14: table issues that's going to affect their bottom line as families.
42:51
Speaker 4: And hollow Slewis, it's always a pleasure to have you

47:12
Speaker 4: News Midday with me going flying solo today powered by
47:16
Speaker 4: Selango Law coming up at noon to three on this
47:18
Speaker 4: and many other metro news stations. Wow, got a lot
47:22
Speaker 4: of texts to get to. Uh let me see here.
47:28
Speaker 4: I'm not gonna be able to get to all of them,
47:30
Speaker 4: so I'll get to as many as I can. Tex says,
47:34
Speaker 4: Sorry to break it to you, but most Americans don't
47:36
Speaker 4: want actual history. Most Americans want the Disney the Disney
47:41
Speaker 4: fed history that makes them feel good and patriotic, not
47:44
Speaker 4: the history of slavery, genocide, and oppression and how those
47:47
Speaker 4: resonate into today. Tech says it's only Republicans who use
47:53
Speaker 4: whatever definition of DEI they want. They are scared to
47:55
Speaker 4: say they prefer whites and don't want to help minorities.
47:59
Speaker 4: Is it DEI to say that the slave trade was bad,
48:01
Speaker 4: that the US government engaged in genociding against Native Americans,
48:04
Speaker 4: then the redlining in the sixties disadvantaged blacks, that Ice
48:08
Speaker 4: is racially profiling Hispanic Americans, that police systematically violate civil
48:12
Speaker 4: rights of non whites, etc. Yes, if you are Republicans.
48:16
Speaker 4: Republicans have no honor or integrity. Tex says the only
48:21
Speaker 4: time that cannabis legislation is a kitchen table issue is
48:24
Speaker 4: after you fired one up and have the munchies. It's
48:26
Speaker 4: a tex that even got a smile out of TJ. Medis.
48:29
Speaker 4: Tex says, any chance of a sixties night some Elvis
48:32
Speaker 4: and Beatles, etc. Well, I think that was in reference
48:34
Speaker 4: of the Dirty Birds, Jill Garren. If you're listening, somebody
48:37
Speaker 4: wants a sixties night over there, Texas day. Religious leaders
48:42
Speaker 4: need to attend events like Pride Day at the ballpark
48:45
Speaker 4: and invite people to church. That's what God called you
48:47
Speaker 4: to do. You don't have a problem supporting a sex
48:50
Speaker 4: assault felon Texas. All my utilities have gone up one
48:55
Speaker 4: hundred and fifty to two hundred percent since Republicans took
48:57
Speaker 4: over the legislature. Need to vote on Public Service Commission,
49:00
Speaker 4: not allow governor to appoint people to those positions. DJ
49:06
Speaker 4: is here.
49:06
Speaker 7: How you doing, man, I'm good. It doesn't matter who's
49:08
Speaker 7: in office, your utility rates would go up regardless. Yeah,
49:11
Speaker 7: it's all about how many people you have here to
49:13
Speaker 7: cover the cost. Look, it's kind of like the price
49:17
Speaker 7: of oil. People want to blame whoever's in the White House.
49:20
Speaker 7: The politicians want to say the other party's in charge,
49:22
Speaker 7: that's why your gas is going up. Pogwash. It's all
49:25
Speaker 7: about the market. It's all about the number of people
49:26
Speaker 7: paying into the system. It's all about a huge amount
49:29
Speaker 7: of fixed costs that we have to cover in this state.
49:31
Speaker 7: State that's a very hard topography to cover to provide
49:34
Speaker 7: any kind of utility, and not having enough people.
49:36
Speaker 4: Paying in I knew as soon as we said utilities
49:40
Speaker 4: that you'd want to jump in just utilities. It's any
49:42
Speaker 4: kind of business man.
49:43
Speaker 7: I mean, come on, I'm not trying to disparage people
49:47
Speaker 7: or or knock on them for hard times because things
49:50
Speaker 7: are getting more expensive and it's getting harder and harder
49:53
Speaker 7: to afford the basic necessities. But that is a symptom
49:58
Speaker 7: of a much larger problem we have here in West Virginia.
50:00
Speaker 7: And it all boils down, Dave. We don't have enough
50:02
Speaker 7: people working, we don't have enough people that live here,
50:06
Speaker 7: and this is a tough state to live in, especially
50:08
Speaker 7: from a topography perspective. Yes, these mountains are beautiful. I
50:11
Speaker 7: love this state, but it's tough to live here. So
50:14
Speaker 7: until we get honest about these problems and try to
50:16
Speaker 7: do something to fix the problem, that will then fix
50:19
Speaker 7: these symptoms. How are you going to fix topography though, Well,
50:23
Speaker 7: I mean, look, Colorado has topography, but they have people.
50:27
Speaker 7: You'll always it'll always be expensive to build things, but
50:29
Speaker 7: if you got enough people to cover the cost, yeah, Well,
50:33
Speaker 7: and that's one of the problems.
50:34
Speaker 4: And we talked about a little bit on the show
50:36
Speaker 4: with some of the areas that are repeatedly flooded, it's
50:40
Speaker 4: a much larger issue, and some people would say, well,
50:44
Speaker 4: why don't you just move? I get that sentiment. Sure, However,
50:49
Speaker 4: you're dealing with a lot of these areas that get
50:51
Speaker 4: flooded on a regular basis. And I'm not talking about
50:53
Speaker 4: the occasional flash flood that we have in West Virginia.
50:55
Speaker 4: I'm talking about the ones in southern West Virginia. McDowell County,
50:58
Speaker 4: Wyoming County, Mingo County, Logan County. These areas are are
51:02
Speaker 4: frequently flooded Boone County. I'll throw in your native land
51:06
Speaker 4: of Boone County in there. We see this a lot.
51:09
Speaker 4: It's not as easy as telling people to move because
51:11
Speaker 4: in many cases you're dealing with folks that are disadvantaged economically. Uh,
51:17
Speaker 4: not saying it's anybody's fault. Sometimes it's their own fault.
51:20
Speaker 4: I won't call it like it is. I mean, sometimes
51:22
Speaker 4: it is our own fault. Sometimes it's not. They own property.
51:26
Speaker 4: Mamm All, Papa owned this property. They're not going to
51:28
Speaker 4: leave the they don't want to leave. The Hollers paid for,
51:31
Speaker 4: paid for very very low cost to live there, as
51:34
Speaker 4: far as property taxes and things of that nature. So
51:36
Speaker 4: there's a lot of problems you and I will not
51:38
Speaker 4: solve them. Hey, I've got a snicker out of you.
51:40
Speaker 4: When the person said that the only time that cannabis
51:44
Speaker 4: is a kitchen table issue is when you get the munchies.
51:46
Speaker 4: That was a texture that said that not mean. All right, Well,
51:49
Speaker 4: so I have a sense of humor despite what people mean,
51:51
Speaker 4: you do have a sense. I share an office with you,
51:53
Speaker 4: and I and I do know that you do have
51:54
Speaker 4: a sense of humor. Yeah, we we have quite fun
51:58
Speaker 4: in our office to do. Me and you and Bobby
52:01
Speaker 4: and Leah and Amanda, we all share. Don't forget our
52:03
Speaker 4: putting green and a putting green and our disco wee.
52:05
Speaker 4: We're the only office of the building with a putting
52:07
Speaker 4: green on a disco ball. All right, what you got
52:09
Speaker 4: on the show today, Bud, Oh, you can't make this
52:11
Speaker 4: stuff up.
52:12
Speaker 2: Hobby's on at eleven six.
52:14
Speaker 4: That'll be fun.
52:14
Speaker 7: Jeff Jenkins stops by at ten thirty three to tell
52:17
Speaker 7: us about everything that's going on in the Turnpike. We
52:19
Speaker 7: start the show with Fairmont State political science professor Greg Now,
52:23
Speaker 7: we're gonna talk about l Salvador jailing Americans down there.
52:26
Speaker 4: Get his take, See what the law says. There's an idea.
52:28
Speaker 4: I don't see what the law says and what a
52:30
Speaker 4: novel concept? Now, Texas DJ is from Boone County. That
52:33
Speaker 4: explains a lot.
52:34
Speaker 7: Yes it does, and I'm proud to be from a
52:37
Speaker 7: product of Sylvester, West Virginia.
52:39
Speaker 4: Downtown Sylvester, not the suburb that's aroundtown. That's right, a right,
