- 0:10Hello and welcome back to Inside Quotes,
- 0:12the show where my brother and I rewatch,
- 0:13review, and relive the staples of our childhood.
- 0:16This is episode one hundred and fifty-four,
- 0:18I'm your host, Jeremy, and with me today is my older brother Jonathan.
- 0:21Jonathan, welcome back to the show!
- 0:24Quack quack everybody, it's great to be back on the show.
- 0:27Reporting for duty, Jeremy.
- 0:28T minus zero seconds, we're here.
- 0:30You know what T minus means? Do we go over this?
- 0:34~ is that like algebra?
- 0:37I'm not so sure.
- 0:38Yeah. When when the letters got mixed in with the the math I I kinda lost track.
- 0:43Well Jeremy, today we're continuing our series of movies based on Disney rides,
- 0:48and we've got an interesting pick today.
- 0:51The two thousand film Mission to Mars.
- 0:54Jeremy, have you ever seen this movie?
- 0:57Today was my first time ever watching this.
- 1:01That seems to be the trend with some of these that we've been doing lately.
- 1:04Yeah, I guess I hadn't seen a
- 1:05lot of random low budget actually this was a high budget,
- 1:08but
- 1:09It was, it was.
- 1:11I didn't watch a lot of the flops from two thousand.
- 1:12Mm-hmm.
- 1:14Well, let me tell you, Jeremy,
- 1:15I didn't watch this one growing up either because mom wouldn't let me.
- 1:20I have a story about this one.
- 1:22~ as you know, we grew up big Apollo 13 fans in our family,
- 1:28you know.
- 1:28Mm-hmm.
- 1:29So our dad watched that movie a lot.
- 1:31We grew up watching it. So I see a trailer ~ on TV for a movie called Mission
- 1:37to Mars, and it's got this guy,
- 1:39Gary Sinise, that was in
- 1:42You know, Apollo thirteen. He didn't get to go on the last one,
- 1:44This is Apollo thirteen two.
- 1:44but he he he's gonna get to go on this trip.
- 1:48I wanna see this, you know? I I
- 1:50Yes.
- 1:52don't think I really thought it was an Apollo thirteen sequel,
- 1:55but I was like, it's gonna be just as good,
- 1:57They're going to the next planet.
- 1:57right? You know?
- 1:59It's pretty much if this was true,
- 2:01this would have been a sequel.
- 2:01Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 2:03If this was true, but Apollo thirteen was not a real story.
- 2:08I dunno, I'd believe it.
- 2:13So I I asked mom if we could go to the movies to go see this one.
- 2:17Okay. And so she she's like, Well,
- 2:20let me look it up. And so she looked it up on a website called screenit dot com.
- 2:24I probably have talked about this in old episodes,
- 2:27but basically it was a website that parents could go to and see what kind
- 2:32of like objectionable content was in it,
- 2:34you know?
- 2:35Green it.
- 2:36It was called screenit dot com.
- 2:38They had like movie reviews and it would tell you if there was a bunch
- 2:40of cussing or sex and stuff like that in
- 2:42Yeah.
- 2:42it.
- 2:43And so she looked it up and she's like,
- 2:45there's too much language in it.
- 2:46We're not we're not going to see that one.
- 2:48So I never got to see this movie and I always wondered about it.
- 2:51Because I mean, you've got to admit,
- 2:54this movie poster is really cool.
- 2:57Let me pull it up.
- 2:58I made a note of that, actually.
- 3:00I said cool poster, by the way.
- 3:03Look at this. This is just some like eBay listing.
- 3:06that's a different one than I saw.
- 3:07I don't okay, there's another one.
- 3:09I've always thought this one was cool.
- 3:11It was so mysterious.
- 3:11That is cool.
- 3:12It was all red, you've got the guy like reaching out with his like glove
- 3:16Yeah.
- 3:16with this weird face on it. Kinda posing like we maybe we should have posed like
- 3:20this for our YouTube thumbnail,
- 3:21you know?
- 3:22Yeah, ~ we could.
- 3:26It's like wow, I gotta see this.
- 3:26the one I saw was that
- 3:28basically this but without the people up top.
- 3:31It was just the opening of the of the spaceship head thingy.
- 3:34I saw that one too, yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 3:36So
- 3:37yeah, it's a cool it kinda looks like Tron.
- 3:41Yeah, it it looks like a cool movie,
- 3:42right?
- 3:43Yeah. Tron Heiris, the coolest movie of the year.
- 3:46That's just the red Tron, that's all I know.
- 3:48Also, I haven't seen it, and I also know it's not cool.
- 3:52Mm. Mm. I I saw
- 3:52We'll see.
- 3:54it. It wasn't like great. If you like the Tron movies,
- 3:58you might
- 3:59Yeah.
- 3:59enjoy it some. ~ Jeremy famously falls asleep in Tron movies,
- 4:03so it might be a good movie for you to fall
- 4:03I've never seen a full Tron movie.
- 4:05fall asleep too.
- 4:07Okay.
- 4:09But before we move forward, Jeremy,
- 4:12do we have a little bit of housekeeping we wanna take care of here?
- 4:14I got housekeeping
- 4:15f first of all, we got a huge announcement.
- 4:17We got our first fan mail.
- 4:20Mm.
- 4:22If any of y'all recall watching our ~ Country Bears episode,
- 4:28episode one fifty one, ~ I made a ~ I I made a plea out to our audience,
- 4:34hey yo, if anybody has these lying around their house,
- 4:39please send them to us. The McDonalds two thousand and two McDonald's Happy Meal
- 4:45Country Bears themed to ~ s toys.
- 4:52And like three weeks later, we get an eBay box with the entire set,
- 4:58I might like to say, sealed.
- 4:59Sealed in the bags.
- 5:01I'm scared to open them. We've got Henry.
- 5:04~ my goodness. This made my day.
- 5:08Shout out to Kelsey's mom.
- 5:10Yeah.
- 5:11We got Ted Betterhead.
- 5:14Man, that's awesome.
- 5:15These will be going up there. ~ I think we decided I am gonna open them.
- 5:19But
- 5:20Mm-hmm.
- 5:21I just wanted to be known that these were sealed and they are very valuable
- 5:24to us in our hearts. This is Big Al.
- 5:25Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 5:28I'm gonna throw him behind me for comedic effect.
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:32We got Fred. He's shirtless, famously.
- 5:35We got Tennessee.
- 5:41That one hit myself.
- 5:45And then we got Barry Barrington,
- 5:47main character.
- 5:51Tricksey.
- 5:52So many of them.
- 5:53There's so many I think there's eight.
- 5:54And then last but not least, Zubzuba.
- 6:00Ha ha.
- 6:01And then they're they also came with these like little watercolor sets,
- 6:06also sealed. ~
- 6:06Yeah. I don't remember these.
- 6:09I don't really remember them either,
- 6:10but they have McDonald's symbol on them.
- 6:13So they may have you know I I think they did come packed inside the little bag.
- 6:17You know? ~ but yeah.
- 6:20I'm sure these don't work very well,
- 6:22but
- 6:23Little colouring sheets.
- 6:25It's so cool.
- 6:26Yeah.
- 6:26Thank you so much.
- 6:27Yeah, that was really cool. That was a a nice surprise to to get in the mail.
- 6:31Yes, it was. It really was. And it's like I felt very powerful just putting that
- 6:38out into the universe and then our loved ones just sending it to us.
- 6:42How great is that?
- 6:44Gotta be careful what you ask for.
- 6:46Yeah.
- 6:46Okay, that being said, listeners,
- 6:48if you have seen a 2007
- 6:54era Baskin Robbins Shrek cardboard cutout with him holding a Baskin Robbins,
- 7:00I don't know, blizzard, whatever they're called,
- 7:01let me know because I need that as well.
- 7:03Mm-hmm.
- 7:05Because that
- 7:06I had in my house and I don't know what happened to it.
- 7:10We got rid of it because it wasn't very movable.
- 7:13We had it for years, I feel like,
- 7:16and it just didn't last like I mean,
- 7:16Yeah. It was great.
- 7:18it was fine,
- 7:19but we just eventually it's like,
- 7:20You gotta get rid of it.
- 7:24Anyways, thank you. Shout out to Sean.
- 7:26Psh Man
- 7:29genuinely made my day. That was so cool.
- 7:31Yeah.
- 7:31I think
- 7:32I only had the I I only had two or three of them from the actual running,
- 7:36so I didn't even really know what they looked like in real life.
- 7:41The full complete set of course.
- 7:41Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 7:43So but yeah. Alright. Well that's our fan mail segment.
- 7:48We probably won't
- 7:49Mm-hmm.
- 7:50get an one of those for a good while.
- 7:51Un I mean unless you know
- 7:55You never know. You
- 7:57never know what kind of stuff crazy stuff that you've put out there
- 8:00in previous episodes. We've got over a hundred and fifty episodes,
- 8:01You never know. Yeah.
- 8:03so you never know.
- 8:04Jonathan, you go you make the next request.
- 8:06Mine was mine was fulfilled, so
- 8:09Yeah, I'll have to think about that.
- 8:10Hmm.
- 8:11Mm-hmm.
- 8:14Yeah, well I'll I'll think about that for the next episode.
- 8:17If
- 8:17Right.
- 8:18we turn this into a recurring segment.
- 8:20We just ask for stuff.
- 8:22It's like the Christmas list.
- 8:26Anyways.
- 8:26Well, I think it's time we talk about behind the attraction,
- 8:31Jeremy, for Mission to Mars. So,
- 8:34like I said, we're doing movies based on Disney rides,
- 8:37so I've been trying to do a little bit of research about the rides that inspired
- 8:40the movie. And here we go.
- 8:44Here is the origin of this ride.
- 8:46It started actually as a Disneyland ride,
- 8:49but when it started it was called Rocket to the Moon.
- 8:53Okay, so
- 8:54Rocket to the moon.
- 8:56yeah.
- 8:57Okay.
- 8:57So it
- 8:58as we kind of talked about in our Tomorrowland episode,
- 9:00how like tomorrow kept on coming,
- 9:03you know, and like a world where we people were landing on the moon,
- 9:05they had to keep reinventing Tomorrowland.
- 9:08And that's kind of what happened with this ride.
- 9:10It started as
- 9:10Yeah.
- 9:11a rocket to the moon, then it was flight to the moon ~ in the sixties,
- 9:17and then in the sev mid seventies,
- 9:19~ that is when they debuted Mission to Mars.
- 9:22And the main
- 9:24It was actually called Mission to Mars.
- 9:24reason for that?
- 9:26Yes.
- 9:26Mm-hmm.
- 9:27Okay. For some reason I thought it was s Mission Space.
- 9:31I'll get to that because I I was confused about that too.
- 9:33Okay.
- 9:33okay.
- 9:35So ~ Mission to Mars, it was a ride,
- 9:39an attraction that was in ~ Tomorrowland at Disney World.
- 9:42That's that's the main area I'm gonna be focused on.
- 9:46Mm-hmm.
- 9:48and basically it was a theater in the round simulation that took guests
- 9:54on a fictional space flight. So it's like everyone is in like a
- 9:58It's like in a round auditorium where everyone's like facing each other.
- 10:02But they had like windows up on the walls that had screens that
- 10:07was basically like simulating this flight,
- 10:10you know, to Mars sort of thing.
- 10:12I did have to look up a video to kind of try and picture
- 10:15it because unfortunately this this ride's no longer there and so I don't have
- 10:19~
- 10:19any f I don't have any footage from my trip,
- 10:21you know. So yeah.
- 10:23Yeah, I never wrote this. No not
- 10:25once.
- 10:26It it closed in nineteen ninety three,
- 10:28which begs the question, why
- 10:28That is why
- 10:30did they make a movie about it in the year two thousand?
- 10:32But I don't know.
- 10:33Yeah, were they hoping to
- 10:36start a space land? That's weird.
- 10:38Yeah.
- 10:40Okay.
- 10:41so the quick description of the ride is you're taken on a simulated trip from Earth
- 10:47to Mars to explore the planet.
- 10:48You encounter like an emergency,
- 10:51like a meteor shower, and then you race back home,
- 10:54and then the ride ends. ~ you start out in mission control and you get briefed
- 11:00by a flight crew and you're basically prepared for the mission.
- 11:04You launch and
- 11:07It starts out with just a journey kind of through space as you're traveling towards
- 11:10Mars. You kind of see things up on the screen as you go by.
- 11:13You land on Mars, and from the video that I saw,
- 11:17you do just kind of it's kind of like a tour around the planet for a little while.
- 11:21Mm-hmm.
- 11:21You're kind
- 11:21of exploring the surface and and whatnot.
- 11:24~ and then the video was kind of confusing to me that I watched,
- 11:29but what I looked up is basically it's a meteor storm that like damages
- 11:33the the spacecraft.
- 11:35And they're like, We gotta return home.
- 11:37And so then it's like an all all out like just we gotta get back home as quick
- 11:42as we can kind of thing. ~ yeah.
- 11:44Apollo thirteen.
- 11:45~ and then I mean,
- 11:49spoiler alert, you land back on Earth and the right ends.
- 11:52So that's kind of basically all that it is.
- 11:53Thank goodness.
- 11:56It is like a simulator.
- 11:58Yeah.
- 11:59but I'm sure that there are people that have pretty cool memories of it.
- 12:02~
- 12:03From the video that I saw, the mission control portion,
- 12:06they had a lot of like the audio,
- 12:08like animatronics that we talked about in the Tomorrowland.
- 12:10Mm-hmm.
- 12:10They're
- 12:11they're kind of like all the employees that are working at the stations and stuff,
- 12:15and like the NASA workers are that are you know briefing you on the mission.
- 12:19So that was kind of cool. But the ride closed
- 12:24in nineteen ninety-three and after that it
- 12:31Turned into a ride that was called Extraterrestrial Alien Encounter.
- 12:36And Extraterrestrial was stylized as like Extra Terror Estrial.
- 12:40Terroristurial, okay. And they couldn't ~ they couldn't
- 12:41So it was like it was supposed to be like a like a scary ride and it
- 12:44was I didn't look too much into it,
- 12:47but it was like
- 12:47steal the IP of Universal. 'Cause they had an ET ride?
- 12:50Yeah, that that universal had the E T
- 12:52ride, yeah.
- 12:55I don't know if that's still there,
- 12:56but I I do remember writing that at some point.
- 12:58But
- 12:59Didn't they
- 13:00used to like you could put your name there and it would like read your name
- 13:02off of everybody in the cart? So a lot of people would just put the same name down
- 13:07and it was like Daryl, Daryl, Daryl,
- 13:10Daryl
- 13:14I don't remember that, but maybe.
- 13:16Yeah.
- 13:16Think that's a fact.
- 13:18Okay, okay. The main thing I I just remember the ride was like bicycles
- 13:23and I I remember walking through the forest,
- 13:26basically like
- 13:27Yeah.
- 13:27in the the ride trying to in the line trying to get to the ride and stuff,
- 13:30but but that's a whole other movie.
- 13:32Hmm. That's a whole nother we already covered that movie.
- 13:34Whole other ride, you know.
- 13:35Yeah.
- 13:38So yeah, extraterrestrial alien encounter is what replaced it.
- 13:43And then that closed. It turned into I think it's like Stitches Great Escape.
- 13:48And then Stitches Great Escape,
- 13:51I think turned into it might be what like the Monsters Inc.
- 13:54laugh floor now. I c I could be getting that wrong,
- 13:56but ~
- 13:57okay.
- 13:59it it's kind of had a history.
- 14:00So that was at Disney World, ~ at Magic Kingdom.
- 14:05Now you brought up Mission Space,
- 14:07which was a ride that opened in two thousand and three.
- 14:13~ at Epcot. Yeah.
- 14:14Epcot, okay.
- 14:16And the difference between the two rides
- 14:19is ~ basically Mission Space was trying to like simulate
- 14:25an actual what it would feel like to go on a like be basically a rocket launch
- 14:31and to land on Mars, like what it would feel like to be ~ an astronaut
- 14:36and like you go through the test training and that sort of thing.
- 14:39Instead
- 14:39Mm-hmm.
- 14:40of with like Mission Space, you're kind of like watching
- 14:43a mission happen like on a screen and stuff.
- 14:45This was supposed to be more immersive.
- 14:48You're in like the POV perspective.
- 14:50Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:51Have you ever ridden mission space before?
- 14:54Okay.
- 14:55Like no.
- 14:57I have not. Is that the one that's in the Epcot ball?
- 14:59No. Spaceship Earth.
- 15:00No, that's Spaceship Earth. Yeah.
- 15:03You know, too they got too many space rides.
- 15:04Yeah.
- 15:06No wonder they closed them down.
- 15:07Yeah. And that one is more about like we go through like all of human civilization.
- 15:12Yeah.
- 15:14kind of kind of a ride.
- 15:15Okay.
- 15:16I never did that one until this last one.
- 15:18maybe I should send you some footage of Spaceship Earth,
- 15:20Is that one still around? Or is that
- 15:21because that's all I've got.
- 15:22one Guardians of the Galaxy now?
- 15:24I'm so confused on this. Okay.
- 15:25no. Mission space is still there,
- 15:27yeah.
- 15:29Yeah, I don't remember what Guardians were placed.
- 15:31There's there's so many rides and so much history of Yeah.
- 15:32Okay. We're not we're not Disney heads as much as we are,
- 15:36Mhm.
- 15:37as we should be, as we're more bush gardens heads.
- 15:39~
- 15:45so that's that's the difference between the two.
- 15:47~ the confusing thing is Gary Sinise is actually like the narrator or like
- 15:53in the pre show for Mission Space.
- 15:55I read that okay. Was that sp
- 15:56Yeah. So there's like
- 15:58a connection, but it's not really Mission to Mars.
- 16:01It's not because of the movie either,
- 16:03'cause that was there before.
- 16:05Yeah. I think it's
- 16:07Right.
- 16:07less about his role being in like Mission to Mars and more about him just being like
- 16:12an astronaut in a lot of movies.
- 16:14Or at least or at least two movies,
- 16:15He's that space guy. Yeah.
- 16:17I don't know.
- 16:20So yeah.
- 16:24the thing I know about Mission Space is that it's famously one that will like makes
- 16:31guests nauseous. Like it it's supposed to it's like on a centrifuge and
- 16:36so there's a lot of spinning and like it's supposed to put like a certain amount
- 16:41of like G force on you to like simulate it and a lot of people
- 16:44Mm-hmm.
- 16:45like don't ri like the ride. And I've only done it one time years ago,
- 16:50the first time I went to Epcot.
- 16:52And everyone was like, that one's terrible,
- 16:54like it makes me sick and I was like,
- 16:56Well, I don't know, I gotta at least try it once.
- 16:58So I went on it and I just remember it being like it was it's like
- 17:02a dumb little simulator. Like it didn't really
- 17:04Yeah.
- 17:04feel anything like to me. I don't know.
- 17:06But maybe I I'm not that sensitive to it.
- 17:08Problems? Tigers solve
- 17:14Like it I was just like that was it.
- 17:16It just kinda rumbled while we like looked at a screen,
- 17:18so I don't know.
- 17:19Yeah.
- 17:20So Mission Space wasn't really my favorite ride either.
- 17:24Sure, sure.
- 17:27But there is a mission to Mars connection and so it's in the spirit
- 17:30of these this history of space travel rides that Disney has,
- 17:34starting with like flight to the moon all the way to mission space that's there
- 17:39Yeah.
- 17:39today.
- 17:42And that's why we're covering it today.
- 17:44Because it justified a movie. And it
- 17:48Yeah, somehow.
- 17:49this was not a staple of my childhood.
- 17:51But it could be.
- 17:53I wanted it to be. Mom said no.
- 17:55Was
- 17:56Yep.
- 17:56she right? Stay till the end to find out.
- 17:59Possibly. I didn't
- 18:01Mm-hmm.
- 18:01really I guess there was cussing,
- 18:03a lot of cussing in this. Hm.
- 18:08I the movie it wasn't actually a Walt Disney productions movie.
- 18:12It was a touchstone. So yeah,
- 18:15But they're owned by them, right?
- 18:16it's still owned,
- 18:16Yeah.
- 18:17so there's like Buena Vista pictures or distribution.
- 18:21They kind of have some other labels,
- 18:23other like mini studios that w they would
- 18:24Same.
- 18:25kind of use for like we don't wanna say this is a Disney movie,
- 18:29even though we own it. But yeah.
- 18:30They also did
- 18:31~ famous TV shows, one of which being
- 18:39Home improvement.
- 18:39Yeah.
- 18:40Yeah. they did all the earnest movies,
- 18:43you know?
- 18:45Really? Okay.
- 18:46Yeah, touchstone. That's what I when I think
- 18:48touchstone, like that little studio logo that comes on at the start,
- 18:52I instantly
- 18:53Yeah.
- 18:53think of Ernest every time.
- 18:55That's so okay. Yeah. Yeah,
- 18:58that makes sense.
- 18:59Ernest Ernest goes to camp, Ernest goes to jail,
- 19:01Ernest
- 19:02We really gotta cover that one next
- 19:02goes fill in the blank.
- 19:04year. We gotta cover Ernest Goes to Camp next year,
- 19:06because it's the fortieth anniversary,
- 19:08and we'll have big plans.
- 19:08We've been talking about it. Yeah.
- 19:10It
- 19:11was filmed not too far from here and we keep wanting to go to the
- 19:13Yep.
- 19:13event. So maybe next year.
- 19:15Maybe next year. Alright, well,
- 19:18shall I share some quick facts and stats?
- 19:23Yeah, let's go through it.
- 19:25Alright, well this movie came out in 2000,
- 19:27which was twenty-six years ago.
- 19:29It was directed by another Mission Impossible director.
- 19:32Wow, two in a row. Brian DePalma.
- 19:35And he he's known for directing Scarface
- 19:39Yeah.
- 19:40and Obsession.
- 19:42Huh? Obsession from nineteen seventy nine.
- 19:42Mm. Obsession. ~ okay.
- 19:46Completely different story, but
- 19:46Okay.
- 19:49it cut I was like, ~ interesting.
- 19:51~ any s some other stuff in the seventies.
- 19:55A lot of like action thriller crime movies,
- 19:59I would say. Not very family friendly ones.
- 20:01He's like Yeah, definitely
- 20:04not. V very violent movies, I think.
- 20:06~ he but he came up in that that same era with like George Lucas
- 20:12and Steven Spielberg.
- 20:13Mm.
- 20:13~ that like new era of Hollywood that came in.
- 20:16Like Brian De Palma was like one of the people that George Lucas showed
- 20:21in early cut of Star Wars too.
- 20:22And
- 20:23Really?
- 20:23like there there was like a whole group of like those early like filmmakers
- 20:26This guy. Okay. He's in there.
- 20:26and stuff. So he's he's been around for sure.
- 20:29He's a big
- 20:30name director.
- 20:32~ the Untouchables, in the eighties,
- 20:34I've heard of that. The Untouchables seems
- 20:34this one. I've I haven't seen it,
- 20:36but it's kind of a back burner.
- 20:37like something that Sean Spencer from Psych would accuse Gus of being like.
- 20:42Like don't be Kevin Costner in the Untouchables.
- 20:45Gus, don't be at Kevin
- 20:45Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:47Costner in the untouchables. That's hard to say.
- 20:49Anyways.
- 20:50Yeah.
- 20:53Alright, well this movie is rated PG.
- 20:56It has a Rotten Tomatoes critic score at twenty-four percent and
- 21:00an audience score of six points higher at thirty percent.
- 21:04The tagline on the poster says getting there was the easy part.
- 21:08This movie is an hour and fifty-four minutes long.
- 21:12It is not on Disney Plus as of this recording,
- 21:16and it's very hard to find. you gotta find the DVD for this sucker.
- 21:20And let me tell you what, you did.
- 21:21You can rent it, but yeah.
- 21:23Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:23You can rent it, yeah.
- 21:25Who's r who's renting it for three ninety nine?
- 21:27I guess technically me.
- 21:27Mm-hmm.
- 21:30But yeah. Jonathan, you found the D V D last week
- 21:35and ~ I guess there's a reason this isn't on streaming,
- 21:39huh?
- 21:42What do you mean by that?
- 21:44I don't know, it just I like the movie.
- 21:50But it's not good. Question mark?
- 21:52Yeah. yeah, yeah. We'll save it for the test.
- 21:53We'll see. We'll see about the test.
- 21:54We'll talk about it.
- 21:55Alright, well let's get into this IQ test.
- 21:57Wow, this is the earliest we've gotten into the test.
- 21:59This is great. Great
- 22:00Mm-hmm.
- 22:01timing. Okay.
- 22:02Shall we start?
- 22:06The IQ test two point
- 22:09We have a test for our movies that meet our IQ standards.
- 22:12We have a series of binary and quantitative tests to help best categorize these
- 22:16movies as staples, stapleist, or just plain quacks.
- 22:19Movies must collect at least seven to nine points to be a staple,
- 22:26ten points to be perfect stapleist,
- 22:28and then less than that, it's a quack.
- 22:33~ so yeah, let's go ahead and get started with our quotable quotes test.
- 22:38Jonathan, how quotable is this movie to you?
- 22:42Well let me tell you, Jeremy, I didn't write down a single one.
- 22:46No.
- 22:46Did you not? Okay.
- 22:48Yeah, I was I was reaching. I wrote down
- 22:51That yeah.
- 22:52one, two, I w I wrote down two.
- 22:55And
- 22:55Okay, okay.
- 22:56they were both Phil. ~ Phil's quotes.
- 22:59Is that Jerry O'Connell's character?
- 23:00Jerry O'Connell. Yeah.
- 23:02Okay.
- 23:04I just loved the way that he said Great,
- 23:05great, great, great, great, great,
- 23:07great. As he was panicking.
- 23:08Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 23:12~ there's they're us, we're them.
- 23:15I looked that up c but it it you know I put it up there.
- 23:18Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 23:20Us equals
- 23:20them 'cause I don't know.
- 23:24We're really reaching here. I think my
- 23:25Yeah that
- 23:26favorite one is ~ Phil isn't here anymore.
- 23:29He left for Earth five minutes ago.
- 23:31Please leave a message after the beep.
- 23:33Okay, that part confused me, let me tell ya.
- 23:36Because that
- 23:36really? You thought he hit the button?
- 23:38no, I thought he was going crazy.
- 23:40Like I thought something was happening to him,
- 23:42'cause it was like out of nowhere.
- 23:44Mm.
- 23:44Like you know
- 23:45how Don Cheadle's character, like they show up to rescue him and he's crazy?
- 23:48Yeah, he goes crazy. Yeah.
- 23:50Like I
- 23:50I thought it was like something weird was happening to him.
- 23:53Like it there was something
- 23:54no.
- 23:54in the delivery, but not just that.
- 23:56The music there was like
- 23:58Mm-hmm.
- 23:59they made it sound ominous when he said it.
- 24:01And so I it like
- 24:03I thought I was like picking up that something weird was happening,
- 24:05but no, he was just like frustrated and you know.
- 24:07No, he's just being funny and mad and scared.
- 24:09He was so happy they
- 24:10were there.
- 24:11He was such a panicking guy. ~ man,
- 24:16that was a tense moment where he was pr this close from pressing the button.
- 24:19Hm.
- 24:20Yeah.
- 24:22Yeah, I like you said, there there was a few things here and there,
- 24:25but like they were all like a reach to me and I so I just didn't even write down
- 24:28Yeah, they were. I
- 24:29this go round.
- 24:30don't think these are all quotes,
- 24:32but they're not inside quotes,
- 24:33I don't think.
- 24:34Yeah. ~ and I was
- 24:36gonna clarify, I have seen this movie once before.
- 24:39I watched
- 24:39Yes.
- 24:40it ~ maybe two or three years ago for the first time 'cause I was curious about,
- 24:44hey, what what is this movie all about?
- 24:46Right.
- 24:47But yeah.
- 24:49Who doesn't love a space movie?
- 24:50You know?
- 24:51Mm-hmm.
- 24:52there is another quote that is a quote from a quote from real life.
- 24:57~
- 24:58Mm.
- 24:58after Mars recovery is given the okay to enter orbit around Mars,
- 25:02Woody Blake says, Let's light this candle.
- 25:05And this is exactly what Alan Shepherd,
- 25:07the first American in space, said just before liftoff in
- 25:11his inaugural Mercury flight.
- 25:11Okay, cool.
- 25:13So that's pretty cool. and then another quote was Sunk
- 25:18Some couples dance, others go to Mars.
- 25:20But that's a total of five quotes.
- 25:26Yeah.
- 25:27I don't think it's enough to pass.
- 25:28So I
- 25:29Yeah. I ~ I don't think so.
- 25:32I'm okay with giving that a good old fail.
- 25:34How about you?
- 25:35Yeah.
- 25:36Alright. Next test We've
- 25:41got the magnificent music test.
- 25:43Also worth one possible point.
- 25:48~ John, take this one away.
- 25:50Okay. We're gonna talk about the magnificent music.
- 25:53Can you name or identify the sound ~ of the theme by heart?
- 25:57does the soundtrack have any iconic music associated with it?
- 26:01Okay, I I've got some what the wives say
- 26:05Okay.
- 26:06notes. I'm gonna sprinkle them in throughout.
- 26:08Okay. Kelsey thought the music was annoying in this movie.
- 26:15She did not like
- 26:17Kind of agree.
- 26:18she did not like the the
- 26:19the music and I I I agree. Specifically and we'll we'll give some more information
- 26:25about the composer and stuff in a second,
- 26:27but the scene where they I think it's when they go outside to repair like
- 26:33the leak on the ship and then like
- 26:35Mm-hmm.
- 26:36they have to it's like the extra extra vehicular activity,
- 26:41the EVA, is that what it is or I don't know.
- 26:43I think so.
- 26:44When
- 26:44they go outside anyway, there was like this organ that was playing in the back.
- 26:50Yeah.
- 26:50And it was
- 26:50so loud in the mix. And I c I said to Kelsey as we were watching it,
- 26:54it's like, it sounds like a batter is like almost up at a baseball game.
- 26:58Hm dun dun dun dun dun.
- 26:58Like that's what the music sounded like.
- 27:00It's
- 27:00like it was just the way the music sounded.
- 27:02It was it was trying to be tense and stuff.
- 27:04But
- 27:05Mm-hmm.
- 27:06yeah. ~ but here here's what I'll say about the composer.
- 27:11I don't know how to say his name.
- 27:12Inyo Morricone. Iconic composer.
- 27:16Yeah, in the Macroni.
- 27:18~
- 27:19What has he done?
- 27:20He ha he
- 27:21The good, the bad and the ugly?
- 27:24What is that? I'm just kidding.
- 27:25You know. He he's an iconic
- 27:26I'm just kidding.
- 27:28~ Westerns composer for sure. ~ but if you look
- 27:31Right. Okay.
- 27:32him up on Spotify and click the first song,
- 27:34you have heard it in like every car commercial for the past twenty years.
- 27:40Like it's like it's or the theme
- 27:41Pum boom boom ping.
- 27:45to ~ good the good, the bad and the ugly.
- 27:48It's it's music that has like taken a life outside of its own of the movie.
- 27:50okay. Well
- 27:54Like any time there's a showdown between two characters,
- 27:57like a in a comedy or something,
- 27:59they'll like pull that music and put it there.
- 28:01You know what I mean? Like
- 28:01okay. I know exactly
- 28:03which one you're talking about.
- 28:04That
- 28:04car commercial. ~
- 28:07~
- 28:12I think it's yeah. It's called
- 28:15had it pulled up a second ago because was listening to it.
- 28:17~ ecstasy of gold is ~ is the one I'm talking about.
- 28:23And then there's the theme the to the good,
- 28:25the bad and the ugly. But he so he he's a he's a very well known
- 28:31composer. Probably did most of his work like in the seventies and kind
- 28:35of in that era and stuff. So yeah.
- 28:36Hm. It seems to be a trend that there's
- 28:39a lot of well known actors, directors,
- 28:41Yeah.
- 28:41and composers, but this does not seem to be their best work.
- 28:46I I would say that.
- 28:47~ Okay.
- 28:47We can talk about this in the acting,
- 28:49but
- 28:51so I would say ~ apart from that,
- 28:53I I didn't find the score of this movie to be that memorable and
- 28:58Yeah, no.
- 28:58some moments were just kind of downright annoying,
- 29:00I I thought. ~
- 29:02Yeah.
- 29:03I did like they did have featured a Van Halen song,
- 29:07Dance the Night Away, and I liked that scene in general and I liked the song.
- 29:08They did, yeah. Yeah.
- 29:10~
- 29:13but there wasn't enough
- 29:15other songs like needle drops in the movie for me to like
- 29:18Mm-hmm.
- 29:18give the music a point, I would say.
- 29:21I agree. The only note I wrote down was not as good or memorable.
- 29:28So I might have to fail this if you will.
- 29:31I think it's a zero.
- 29:32Alrighty. Alright.
- 29:35How about our next test, Jonathan?
- 29:38Take us off.
- 29:40Well, we're gonna talk about the story test.
- 29:44From page to screen, is the script a masterpiece or was another draft needed?
- 29:49Hmm.
- 29:52You know what about the story here?
- 29:55It did it check some boxes off for me,
- 29:59but some things I it lost me completely.
- 30:02Like I it's a great premise. Anything Mars related is gonna
- 30:07be an interesting premise. I'll have that.
- 30:10It I don't even know if it feels complete,
- 30:13though. The writing
- 30:23I don't know, there's character development,
- 30:25there is world building, very much world building.
- 30:28It's a whole nother planet that we've never seen with our eyes.
- 30:32~ it's not the funniest movie.
- 30:39It does have heart. I don't know,
- 30:40this one's it it the story there was a part after the sandworm storm,
- 30:46whatever you want to call it.
- 30:47Yeah.
- 30:48yeah. Kelsey was like, Is this Dune?
- 30:51Yeah, it was like Dune. ~
- 30:55it it lost me right after that.
- 30:57And it kept jumping between different I like things and like jumping fast forwarding
- 31:00That's that was pretty early in the movie.
- 31:02it kept
- 31:03fast forwarding all the important parts of a good space movie.
- 31:05Like the launch. We don't see a single launch in this movie.
- 31:10It is yeah, so for a movie that's called Mission to Mars,
- 31:13it's kind of two missions. Like you
- 31:15Yeah.
- 31:16see the astronauts before a group of go up,
- 31:18and then it cuts, it says like thirteen months later.
- 31:21And then they're
- 31:21Yeah.
- 31:22just there exploring the planet,
- 31:23doing scientific tests and and such.
- 31:26There's like five six minutes of them in space.
- 31:30Period. Maybe ten.
- 31:33There's a whole like tethering
- 31:34Might be a little bit. Yeah.
- 31:36scene which w I really liked the tethering scene.
- 31:39That was cool. That was very
- 31:40Yeah.
- 31:41intense. And then they had to kill the guy off 'cause they had to have four people.
- 31:45Yeah.
- 31:46Technically. I don't know. ~ it just was like it was very interesting.
- 31:52I I liked that sequence. That the sequence between like well like finding
- 31:58out like they're gonna go and see if there's any survivors on the planet after
- 32:02the incident with the the sandworm,
- 32:05meteor storm. and so that like sequ of like trying to go to there and land,
- 32:11I thought that was a pretty good section of the movie.
- 32:14Yeah.
- 32:15Yeah, yeah, yeah. I think them figuring it out,
- 32:18like the problem solving section,
- 32:20like the three of them trying to figure out what their plan is and then like
- 32:25the mission commander's like, Hold up,
- 32:26hold up, hold up. We haven't figured stuff out yet And they're like,
- 32:29Well there's no time I think I I I stopped paying attention in that part.
- 32:37And it was just pretty boring from there.
- 32:39For the next thirty to forty minutes I was very bored.
- 32:42Until
- 32:42Yeah.
- 32:43they got they were in space again.
- 32:49yeah, I I definitely remember too,
- 32:51like it seemed like a typical like space kind
- 32:58of survival story. And then feeling like when you got to the end it was kind
- 33:02of a a twist to make it more sci fi.
- 33:05And I was like I was pretty lost at the the first time I watched it.
- 33:08Hmm.
- 33:12Yeah, that was weird. He's just swimming
- 33:13It was kind of a weird scene.
- 33:15in electron water, like flying through space with the Martian lady.
- 33:20Mm.
- 33:22That was weird.
- 33:23Like i it could have been two separate movies.
- 33:26Yeah, I it it wa it was kinda strange.
- 33:32Let's see.
- 33:33But
- 33:33I like that his decision was like,
- 33:35I'm going home for real.
- 33:37Mm-hmm.
- 33:37This is my destiny. I'm gonna go explore space with my ancestors from Mars.
- 33:44Yeah.
- 33:46So yeah, well we can talk about that a little bit.
- 33:49So
- 33:49Mm-hmm.
- 33:50but before we get there, so they land there,
- 33:53they find Don Cheadle's character,
- 33:54Luke Graham. I have
- 33:56Yep.
- 33:57to look up his name. I don't remember anybody's name in this movie,
- 33:59except for
- 33:59I know.
- 34:00woody. ~
- 34:02I barely remembered his name.
- 34:06they find him on the planet. He's the only survivor after this incident,
- 34:09and it it took them like a year to get back to him.
- 34:12Yeah. It's six months to get
- 34:12So that it it was a little confusing.
- 34:14there.
- 34:14Yeah, it was little confusing,
- 34:16but also I appreciated the like the realisticness of it.
- 34:19It wasn't like he had just been there
- 34:20Mm-hmm.
- 34:21for like a few days or something.
- 34:22Like it really does take that long to get there.
- 34:25But he's like kinda gone crazy.
- 34:27And so like he doesn't even trust that they're real when they get there.
- 34:31~
- 34:31Right. Yeah.
- 34:33I didn't understand that room that they were in wa it was like a tent
- 34:39and they were grow he was like growing all the it
- 34:40The greenhouse.
- 34:41was like a greenhouse, but I like,
- 34:42How are they breathing in there?
- 34:45~ it I think it's
- 34:47Is it in enclosed in like a greater thing?
- 34:50in an enclosed thing.
- 34:51There was like wind blowing and stuff.
- 34:54What's weird is that in The Martian they also did that.
- 34:58Okay.
- 34:59So I feel like I would have liked this movie a lot more if I hadn't seen
- 35:03the Martian, because
- 35:04Yeah.
- 35:04the Martian is a much better survival story on Mars.
- 35:07I
- 35:07Yeah. So yeah, they get there,
- 35:09they land, and they kind of they start to explore I guess
- 35:14the the face that's sticking up out of there is like transmitting
- 35:19all these these like signals and stuff.
- 35:21So they're like trying
- 35:21Yeah.
- 35:22to figure out how to decode what that means and anyway,
- 35:25all that being said, I was gonna get to the reveal.
- 35:28It's like when they go and actually explore and they they make contact with
- 35:33this alien
- 35:33Mm-hmm.
- 35:34Martian being. So I was trying to track it.
- 35:37Basically what happens was the Martians evacuated the planet after a meteor strike.
- 35:44Yes. Well
- 35:45Okay. And then
- 35:47they sent some of their DNA in like seeded Earth.
- 35:51So they like sent they basically they're the cause of evolution in on
- 35:57Mm-hmm.
- 35:57the world. Is that is that what they're implying,
- 35:59I think?
- 35:59They shot
- 36:00a bunch of fish into the sea.
- 36:02And then humans are like one step in the evolutionary sequence towards becoming like
- 36:09that a Martian. Is that am I understanding that right?
- 36:11That's why
- 36:12I believe so.
- 36:13he's like, I I'm going home technically because this is these are my people.
- 36:18They're just more evolved than me,
- 36:19right?
- 36:22Sure.
- 36:26It's a little confusing.
- 36:27Yeah. And to that I say like I just wanted to quote TJ Detweiler's
- 36:31dad from Recess Schools Out. What a load of hogwash.
- 36:35What a logo What a little hogwash.
- 36:39There we go. Well I
- 36:41I wanted to do a quote in the scene where in the tethering scene where Woody dies.
- 36:48Spoiler That was some good writing.
- 36:52I liked that the husband and wife were on the mission together and I just
- 36:56I could I could call that from a mile away.
- 36:59One of them was going to die on the mission.
- 37:01Mm-hmm.
- 37:03and it was really cool.
- 37:04Cool and sweet, but the writing
- 37:08of her like breaking orders to go save her husband that
- 37:15she can't save, and him like sacrificing himself so that she can live.
- 37:20'Cause she won't live if it's up to her.
- 37:23~ and everyone was like,
- 37:28You don't have enough fuel
- 37:34Put it in reverse, Terry. You got no fu you got no fuel?
- 37:40Yeah. No, I yeah.
- 37:41And then he just
- 37:43turns into a shriveled up raising guy.
- 37:44Ugh.
- 37:48So I d I did wanna just like try and figure out okay,
- 37:51did I understand the ending right?
- 37:53Because I it feels kinda like it's one of those stories where it's like
- 37:59I kind of feel like Interstellar was kinda like this too.
- 38:01Where it was like
- 38:02Yeah.
- 38:03our future selves helped our current selves solve a problem
- 38:08to continue on living and evolving.
- 38:12I don't know if you remember that,
- 38:13Uhhuh. Well, this Interstellar actually
- 38:14but like they were kind of yeah.
- 38:17based their whole story off of this movie,
- 38:19so
- 38:19Yeah, I think so.
- 38:21Mm-hmm. ~
- 38:22Famously.
- 38:25okay. Story wise, I think there's an interesting premise.
- 38:29I think the ending kinda it kinda loses it for me.
- 38:33Yeah.
- 38:33I think I would have enjoyed the story more if it was just a typical just like
- 38:38a mission space kind of survival story.
- 38:42Mm-hmm.
- 38:43But they kinda went like extraterrestrial with it.
- 38:47You got to. A Martian.
- 38:51Well I guess yeah. ~
- 38:52You don't have to, actually. You don't.
- 38:56yeah the Martians didn't you know,
- 38:58Unless it's true.
- 38:58he didn't.
- 39:00I I don't know. ~ what would you give the story on this one?
- 39:02Do you think there's enough interesting thing ~ elements to pass it?
- 39:06I'm right on the fence. I'm on the
- 39:08Yeah.
- 39:09fence. I think it was just too cloudy.
- 39:11Too many different stories they could have fully fleshed out.
- 39:15So I maybe there wasn't one perfect ~ maybe not one perfect story.
- 39:21I feel like
- 39:25Nah, I'm gonna p I'm not passing this.
- 39:27I'm sorry. I gotta go with my gut.
- 39:27Yeah. I okay.
- 39:29Yeah.
- 39:31Yeah.
- 39:33Alright, well, we've got our acting test worth
- 39:40one point. ~ so basically we put this up to Robin Williams vs.
- 39:45the Rock. In every Robin Williams movie,
- 39:48he's a you it's Robin Williams,
- 39:50but he melts himself into each character.
- 39:52In every rock movie, he plays the rock and it sinks to the bottom.
- 40:00~ so basically are these people believable?
- 40:03Are they good actors? And even if they are good actors,
- 40:08are they acting well in this movie?
- 40:12first of all I want to say stacked cast.
- 40:14~ we've got Tim Robbins from Shawshank Redemption,
- 40:18Connie Nielsen from Gladiator,
- 40:21~ Gary Sinise, already been in a space movie,
- 40:25finally gets to go to space. Let's go,
- 40:27Lieutenant Dan. ~ one thing about Gary Sinise
- 40:32~ he also plays an astronaut missing out on a mission
- 40:38in Apollo 13, which you've already said.
- 40:40But this time he gets to go on s go into space as well.
- 40:43~ and then there's a scene where it's constantly turning
- 40:50and spinning while they're in space,
- 40:51and he was strapped in that chair at his desk while he rotated around
- 40:57and around for an entire day of rehearsals.
- 40:59~ man.
- 41:00He
- 41:01they did that until he asked Brian De Palma to stop.
- 41:04~ man.
- 41:06So basically he was just in there.
- 41:08~
- 41:11And then we've got Don Cheadle.
- 41:13He was excellent in Oceans Eleven,
- 41:16I believe. And then he was in the MCU.
- 41:18But we love him from Oceans Eleven mostly.
- 41:22Yeah. Yeah, in this movie he was
- 41:24Because
- 41:24in Deep Barney.
- 41:31I had to get that one on the old soundboard.
- 41:34That's a good one. Bonnie Rebel.
- 41:36Trouble.
- 41:39that's our one inside quote from that movie,
- 41:41I think. ~ but one thing for Don Cheadle's acting is he went method
- 41:47for a little bit. He actually slept outside by himself to get a sense
- 41:52of the environment in isolation.
- 41:53I assume he meant on the set. Unless it's just like in his backyard.
- 41:58I don't know.
- 42:00But that was pretty cool. He's he had to
- 42:00Yeah, I don't know. Yeah.
- 42:02act. And he did act. He acted like he didn't know anybody and
- 42:06he went crazy.
- 42:06Mm-hmm.
- 42:08So I feel I feel very good about those two as actors,
- 42:13at least. We've got Jerry O'Connell from Stand By Me and Kangaroo Jack.
- 42:19Two staples of our childhood.
- 42:22~
- 42:22Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 42:25he says that he wanted this role specifically because he studied Brian
- 42:29De Palma's films.
- 42:30in film school.
- 42:31Mm-hmm.
- 42:32So And then we've got our boy Kavon Smith.
- 42:37Kevin Smith. ~ pre C spot run performance.
- 42:40Caven? Yeah, I don't know. Yeah.
- 42:42That was a nice
- 42:42surprise to see.
- 42:44Yeah.
- 42:48C Spot Run is pretty iconic for us in the inside quotes world.
- 42:51So when w I saw him show up, I was like,
- 42:53yeah, wow.
- 42:54I don't know
- 42:55if I've ever seen him in anything else besides C spot run.
- 42:58So Kelsey like, I know him from something and so I Googled him a
- 43:02He looks like James Marsden a little bit.
- 43:04little a little bit. ~ he he's in a ton of Hallmark movies.
- 43:09So I was like, Have you seen any Hallmark movies?
- 43:11Mm, that's gotta be it.
- 43:11And
- 43:12I was like, There's at least a dozen of like that it's like the top results for him.
- 43:16So I think that's kind of where he went after,
- 43:19I don't know, the early two thousands.
- 43:20This movie must have
- 43:21~ those two movies must not have done well for him then.
- 43:25And then we've got a small character.
- 43:29We've got ~ Peter Outerbridge,
- 43:31known from the Cool Runnings movie.
- 43:35He's the guy from Switzerland that says,
- 43:37Hey Blitza Yes. He's like the Russian guy at the beginning of this
- 43:38Is he really? I did not catch that.
- 43:41yeah.
- 43:42movie. Yeah.
- 43:47And another thing I wanna say that Gary Sinese kinda looks like the
- 43:50kid from the holdovers, especially in this movie,
- 43:53and just kinda the way he talks.
- 43:56Okay, okay.
- 43:57That's pretty much all I have to say.
- 43:59But yeah. I feel good about the the acting.
- 44:04really? I I didn't
- 44:05I did not like the acting in this
- 44:08How was my acting?
- 44:12Yeah.
- 44:14I'm a better actor than everybody in this movie,
- 44:17apparently. I got you good. Okay.
- 44:20Okay. Maybe.
- 44:21You're just saying that. You're trying backtracking now.
- 44:24Okay.
- 44:30note from the wife. ~ yeah, she did not believe anybody's performance in this movie.
- 44:36I didn't even believe they were floating in zero G.
- 44:39Yeah. I and like I I
- 44:40And that's the hard
- 44:41a a space movie, you have to be able to act like you're in C R G.
- 44:45Even if you're not.
- 44:47Yeah. I out of out of all the acting,
- 44:52I think I liked Tim Robbins the best.
- 44:54Maybe I liked his character the best out of any of them.
- 44:57You thought he was the worst? Okay.
- 44:57Absolutely not. I was ~ no,
- 45:02I just didn't think he was great.
- 45:03okay.
- 45:05He he couldn't switch from like his joking flirting with his wife
- 45:08to like serious we're on a mission.
- 45:10That wasn't very good. ~
- 45:10That's true. Yeah.
- 45:14I mean I thought if I had to choose one from this movie,
- 45:17I would say Don Cheadle.
- 45:19Okay. Yeah. Yeah,
- 45:22but none of it was great, I think.
- 45:23Yeah.
- 45:23Nah, nah nah. I'm not passing this.
- 45:28So, yeah, there we go.
- 45:29Mm.
- 45:32Let's move on to our next test.
- 45:37The characters test.
- 45:39Okay, okay.
- 45:41Yes. Okay, so we've got our lead the hero,
- 45:45~ or protagonist, which is Gary Sinise.
- 45:50We're just gonna call them by their acting names,
- 45:53'cause Jim
- 45:53Jim I I wrote down Jim Eyeliner McConnell.
- 45:56He What was wrong with him? His makeup was crazy.
- 45:59His eyes were so creepy.
- 46:01Eyeliner
- 46:03I I actually
- 46:04his lips
- 46:05almost looked red and his face
- 46:07His skin was like purpley pale.
- 46:08He almost looked like an alien in this movie.
- 46:09When I was doing
- 46:11one of the like the Google search results was just like,
- 46:14~ did Gary Sinise wear eyeliner in in this movie?
- 46:20And it said yes. Like apparently it was like very heavy and there's
- 46:25no official answer, but like fans or people that watched it were guessing
- 46:29it was like to show that he was like grieving and tired and like not
- 46:32Uh-huh.
- 46:33doing well. But he really just like came off
- 46:36Like it seemed like he wasn't blinking and his eyes just looked weird
- 46:39in like every scene.
- 46:40No.
- 46:40It was weird.
- 46:42He did not he looked like he had some health issues in real life.
- 46:43And yeah. Yeah.
- 46:46Yeah, it was weird. Mm-hmm
- 46:47I didn't I didn't look into that,
- 46:49so hopefully that's not true,
- 46:50but like I don't know.
- 46:52Yeah. ~ you find them compelling,
- 46:57memorable, or emotionally engaging?
- 47:02I d I didn't.
- 47:02His character, not his acting.
- 47:03Okay, well th I felt like the character could have been good.
- 47:07~ I felt like his acting, going back to that,
- 47:10was just like very understated and
- 47:13Mm-hmm.
- 47:14like
- 47:16They kept looking to him for leadership,
- 47:18but I didn't really know why. I don't know.
- 47:20Maybe from his past self was in a better state.
- 47:23Because he and his wife
- 47:25used to be astronauts together.
- 47:27okay. Yeah. ~ I mean I get that,
- 47:29That's why. And he got kicked off because
- 47:32but yeah.
- 47:33his wife passed away, I guess?
- 47:36Yeah, it seemed it sounded like they got she got sick and then he stepped aside
- 47:41to like take care of her and so he had to stop like training for the mission.
- 47:44Hope it wasn't the measles.
- 47:48Yeah. That I guess that makes sense.
- 47:50But in this case I kinda wish that Don Cheadle would have taken that role
- 47:55as like the commander.
- 47:58And I guess he kinda
- 47:59Yeah.
- 47:59did, 'cause you know, he kinda went AWOL on the mission,
- 48:02but
- 48:04Yeah, I I sort of w yeah, I guess what I'm struggling with is I wish he
- 48:08he did take more of a command,
- 48:10like in the movie. You know? I feel like he
- 48:12Yeah.
- 48:12just kind of is there.
- 48:15Yeah. Well they kinda said that at the beginning,
- 48:17They kinda bring him along and he's Yeah.
- 48:19like the three of
- 48:20them, him, Woody and Don Cheadle.
- 48:22~
- 48:22Mm-hmm.
- 48:25they kinda said in like the jungle gym at the party,
- 48:27they're like, ~ man, imagine us all three of us on the same one.
- 48:31Three commanders, that's crazy.
- 48:31True, yeah. Yeah. Too much ego.
- 48:33We could never do that. Yeah.
- 48:36Yeah. I I yeah,
- 48:39I we don't have to debate it too much.
- 48:41I I think it's an okay it's a good character.
- 48:41Yeah. Yeah.
- 48:43~
- 48:44I I didn't like the acting necessarily,
- 48:46I guess, so we can go with the character.
- 48:46Mm-mm. Character's pretty cool.
- 48:48Okay.
- 48:50we've got the villain and antagonist.
- 48:55I don't even think we have a villain.
- 48:55I put the face question mark. It's weird.
- 48:56Just the face? I'm gonna say the
- 49:01~
- 49:03there isn't really a villain in this movie.
- 49:05Just Mars.
- 49:07Yeah, I guess yeah. Like
- 49:10Just it's a disaster movie, so I guess there isn't an antagonist.
- 49:13It's an opposing force.
- 49:16Nature I don't know. I'll say no.
- 49:22Supporting character.
- 49:25Dude, I don't know. There's too many characters too.
- 49:28N a lot of died, which is fine,
- 49:28Kelsey said the same thing, yeah.
- 49:30But I
- 49:31I guess.
- 49:32it it was hard to keep track. I it
- 49:34Yeah.
- 49:35it's like there was a crew you get introduced to all of them at the beginning,
- 49:38only for
- 49:38Mm-hmm.
- 49:39like most half of them to like die at the start of that first mission.
- 49:42Right. Kinda like in twisters.
- 49:42And then the other characters
- 49:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 49:49And then yeah, I guess it was just it was kinda hard to like then differentiate
- 49:54between all of them.
- 50:01I guess we'll say supporting character Don Sheadle.
- 50:04I like
- 50:05Okay.
- 50:06that character a lot. I I think him the fact that he was reading
- 50:09Probably the best character.
- 50:11best character for sure. ~ him reading Treasure Island with his son while he's
- 50:17in space the same night so he can stay connected with his family.
- 50:22That was great. ~
- 50:27And just him having to survive.
- 50:27Just also in the way Yeah,
- 50:29also the way he just would express like how ~ he's
- 50:34he he told Jim McConnell's character,
- 50:37like I I wanted this this command post but like I didn't want I didn't want
- 50:42it like this. Like you deser you
- 50:43Right.
- 50:44were supposed to be the first one and you know,
- 50:47so just like that real like friendship underneath
- 50:48He's like a great guy.
- 50:50underneath like the the work, yeah.
- 50:52Mm-hmm.
- 50:54Yeah. I I think I think I will pass this just because there's
- 50:59so much backstory and a lot of the characters are really well fleshed out,
- 51:04even if they didn't survive most of the movie.
- 51:09the minor characters Phil
- 51:09Yeah. Was Phil the
- 51:14scene stealer or or minor character?
- 51:16I would say Phil might be the scene stealer.
- 51:18He I mean, I yeah, he had the most jokes.
- 51:20Don't even know.
- 51:21He had the most like, you know,
- 51:23comedic relief I feel like. but yeah.
- 51:24Yeah. And it was his idea to use
- 51:27a lot of the to use the satellite for images.
- 51:32So
- 51:34Mm. yeah, that's a good good point.
- 51:37~ So yeah, I'll put him as that.
- 51:40He was good. The minor character,
- 51:42I guess maybe Terry.
- 51:47Wasn't that actually her name?
- 51:47Yeah, I
- 51:49yeah, Terry Fisher.
- 51:50That's that's
- 51:51that's why I did the put it in reverse,
- 51:53Terry, 'cause it was so perfect.
- 51:53Yeah. Yeah yeah.
- 51:55That's what I thought you put a reverse turkey.
- 52:00Back up, Terry. You got fifty percent point of no return.
- 52:03I love that her little thing said like that we couldn't read the charts ourselves.
- 52:09But it was like fifty percent point of no return.
- 52:14Ha ha
- 52:17Also, I
- 52:18Yeah.
- 52:18don't believe that. I believe she they could have just I mean,
- 52:21I don't know how space works, but you know,
- 52:24if she could use all of her fuel to get to him
- 52:29and push themselves that way a little bit,
- 52:30then the next person needs less fuel.
- 52:37Yeah.
- 52:38to get to both of them and then they can get like seventy five percent
- 52:41of the way and then the last person can go take them all.
- 52:45And then they all run out of fuel together.
- 52:46Even if they just did
- 52:48like even if they didn't like they could just like do it in spurts,
- 52:51you know, like a little bit at a
- 52:52Yeah.
- 52:53time. And like they would move slowly.
- 52:55But
- 52:55Yeah.
- 52:55also like yeah. I don't know. I guess they just didn't have that kind
- 52:58of time 'cause he was like heading down into the atmosphere and was about
- 53:01Yeah, but he's going the different way.
- 53:02to burn up anyway.
- 53:03I don't know. I think it
- 53:04was there was a a way to solve that problem,
- 53:07I think. If we're talking s sci fi not real science,
- 53:11I feel like we could have done that.
- 53:15But whatever, he just gave up.
- 53:18So to get the pass it needs to be three out of the five boxes.
- 53:22So I think we like the lead and the supporting and the scene stealer,
- 53:25Yeah. Overall we like the characters better than the acting.
- 53:27so Okay.
- 53:30Yeah, for sure.
- 53:31So this'll be our first pass.
- 53:35Alright. Well characters passed.
- 53:42One for five. boy.
- 53:43One, four,
- 53:44five. Alright. This can still be stapleist.
- 53:47Maybe.
- 53:49Could be, could be.
- 53:50Yeah. Alright, let's move on to the sensational set design.
- 53:54This is probably my favorite to talk about
- 53:59Yeah.
- 53:59for this movie. Automatically I'm passing this.
- 54:03The set design is incredible.
- 54:06~
- 54:09Yeah. The between like the space station and the space shuttle,
- 54:13~ and then just like the design of Mars itself
- 54:18Yes. I've got a lot of fun facts.
- 54:19and like that greenhouse, yeah.
- 54:22I watched the behind the scenes on here,
- 54:24and there's a lot of fun facts about that whole section.
- 54:27So the filmmakers created the Martian landscape in a massive sand
- 54:33pit near Vancouver. and it was one of the biggest sets ever constructed for a movie,
- 54:39around two million square feet.
- 54:41I would say this passes for set design.
- 54:44Sheesh,
- 54:44Mm-hmm.
- 54:45breaking records.
- 54:47~ the crew used an actual what?
- 54:47Well you know what else did? The set
- 54:49for Popeye when they built that whole that whole town.
- 54:51Ayy, that's
- 54:53that's that is true. We
- 54:55Yeah.
- 54:56never put that one through the IQ test.
- 54:57We'll have to do that. ~
- 54:58Mm. Mm-hmm.
- 55:00Yep, the crew used a real two thousand pound rock to drop behind the astronauts.
- 55:05They pulled rocks from like Jordan and all over the world.
- 55:10Well, mm-hmm.
- 55:12Many of the props from the movie,
- 55:13including the big turning wheel set and the spacecraft model,
- 55:18are now on display.
- 55:19in the line of the Q area at Mission Space Ride at Epcot.
- 55:24Okay, that's really cool.
- 55:26~ so that that is really cool.
- 55:28I I'll look for that next time.
- 55:30I guess we have to go back, huh?
- 55:31Hmm.
- 55:32Yeah.
- 55:32Maybe I'll go with ya. ~ The crew used over fourteen thousand gallons
- 55:39of paint to spray the soil Mars red.
- 55:43~ effects Nah,
- 55:43Wow. Yeah, people just don't do that anymore,
- 55:47you know? Yeah.
- 55:47this is a lot of practical and f and digital effects.
- 55:50Yeah.
- 55:53But ~ lots of practical work.
- 55:56the effects supervisor Hoyt Yeetman.
- 56:00says this is a hardware film, as he puts it.
- 56:03Almost every location in the movie had to be created from scratch because
- 56:07it doesn't exist in the real world.
- 56:09That dust is blown by ten massive three hundred and fifty horsepower wind machines.
- 56:14The whole crew wore gas masks during the shock.
- 56:20And they wanted to make sure the shadows didn't look like Earth either,
- 56:25so they reflected copper light onto the actors to mimic the orange atmosphere
- 56:31of the Martian sky.
- 56:35They went so hard.
- 56:37Yeah.
- 56:38They tried so hard on this to be so good.
- 56:41And you know what? I'm passing him for it.
- 56:44What else do you have to say?
- 56:48I I agree with all that. I I did know when we got to the set design,
- 56:52I was like, Okay, this is where the movie is gonna start to shine a little bit.
- 56:55So 'cause I I did think that the sets were pretty cool.
- 56:55yeah. yeah. Kinda like in Tomorrowland.
- 56:58Yeah.
- 56:59Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 57:03Alright, well this one passes.
- 57:06On to our next test.
- 57:10Man, I gotta keep on to our next test,
- 57:15the cinematography slash animation test.
- 57:18Now where the set design was great,
- 57:21was the cinematography as good?
- 57:24Was the CGI effects
- 57:28~
- 57:29Passable?
- 57:30I don't know.
- 57:31Well as far as cinematography goes,
- 57:34I think it yeah, I think so. ~ I think the shots were really good.
- 57:38I I noticed a lot of long takes.
- 57:41like the even the beginning scene when they're at like the barbecue,
- 57:46like that
- 57:47Uh-huh.
- 57:47was a long wonder going from like one to the next,
- 57:50Mm-hmm.
- 57:51like traveling through that. And there was a few sequences there.
- 57:54The best shot of the movie is that turning wheel sequence you were talking about
- 57:57Absolutely. Yep.
- 57:58on the shot on the ship.
- 58:00That was a pretty long take there.
- 58:02And yeah.
- 58:03That reminded
- 58:04me of two thousand one A Space Odyssey.
- 58:07Yeah, yeah. ~ it was ver it was definitely shot more like static
- 58:13Mm-hmm.
- 58:14style.
- 58:14Like there w there wasn't a lot of like camera movement.
- 58:17Like it was very slow and deliberate and long takes.
- 58:20Only
- 58:21There
- 58:21wasn't like rapid cutting, you know?
- 58:23There was camera movement only
- 58:25Mm-hmm.
- 58:25when they were like trying to show off like the up close like zero G.
- 58:30Like they kept spinning it. Like the camera was moving.
- 58:32y yeah.
- 58:34I'm just talking about in general for the movie.
- 58:36But yeah, yeah.
- 58:36okay, gotcha.
- 58:38Yeah. I
- 58:41I
- 58:41yeah, I did so on that turning wheel sequence.
- 58:43I was trying to think how how they did it.
- 58:45And at that point when like Phil's character Phil is like he's like walking,
- 58:50almost like on a treadmill as it keeps turning.
- 58:51Yeah.
- 58:52Then he stops at a ladder and starts to climb it.
- 58:54And then as soon as he grabs
- 58:55I love that part.
- 58:56that, they like push in quickly so that you know,
- 58:58Mm-hmm.
- 58:58like I don't know
- 59:00I still don't actually know how they shot it,
- 59:01but I just figured they had to like push in before he kept climbing
- 59:05or else he wouldn't have been able to do it or something.
- 59:07I don't know.
- 59:07I will give you back your D V D that you let me borrow and you can watch
- 59:10Okay. Okay. Okay.
- 59:11the behind the scenes 'cause they go over that.
- 59:13It's pretty cool. It is really,
- 59:14Yeah.
- 59:15really cool.
- 59:16Is it is it like ~ Christopher Nolan filming Inception in that hallway and stuff?
- 59:21Yeah.
- 59:21Pretty much. Let's just say
- 59:26even better. As for go keep going.
- 59:29So I I Okay, go ahead.
- 59:32Are you gonna get to the visual effects next?
- 59:34Okay, go for it.
- 59:34Yeah.
- 59:36As for the animation side of it,
- 59:39I'm not sure I'm not sure.
- 59:44I mean like the sandworm Mars Debris thing storm
- 59:50Mm-hmm.
- 59:51didn't look too bad, I wanna say.
- 59:54It matched the rest of the movie.
- 59:57But then like the spinning body ripping apart was insane.
- 1:00:03yes. Well
- 1:00:03In a bad way. It looked horrible.
- 1:00:07let me say about that. ~ so I watched this with Kelsey and when that happened,
- 1:00:12she was like d disturbed by that,
- 1:00:12My ch My jaw drop.
- 1:00:14obviously. And then she was like,
- 1:00:16You you
- 1:00:18you gotta get better at like warning me before gross stuff happens in movies.
- 1:00:22Which I had forgotten about
- 1:00:25Yeah.
- 1:00:26that. I remember the scene with Woody when he takes off the helmet.
- 1:00:30Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:31And
- 1:00:31he sacrifices himself. I remember that.
- 1:00:33But the the beginning part.
- 1:00:33I'm glad it didn't show it happen.
- 1:00:36Yeah.
- 1:00:36But then it showed the end result.
- 1:00:38But
- 1:00:38Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 1:00:40man, I hated that scene. That was hard to watch.
- 1:00:46I thought it was a standout scene of the movie.
- 1:00:48~ but yeah.
- 1:00:51The sandworm or the tether? Yeah,
- 1:00:52The tether. Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:54yeah, no, I agree. I was talking about the sandworm.
- 1:00:55Yeah.
- 1:00:55~
- 1:00:59speaking of the tether, there's a good shot.
- 1:01:01Probably my favorite shot of the film was while they were one by one on the tether,
- 1:01:05leaving the there was a corkscrew shot,
- 1:01:08but it was like intertwining between
- 1:01:10Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:11each astronaut. It looked really cool.
- 1:01:15Yeah.
- 1:01:16I think that was my favorite shot.
- 1:01:17Besides the big hamster wheel.
- 1:01:17Cool. Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:20Yeah.
- 1:01:21~ but yeah, it it said also that they took inspiration from Two Thousand One,
- 1:01:27A Space Odyssey.
- 1:01:29That makes sense, yeah.
- 1:01:30To f especially for the long shots and like the models and stuff like that.
- 1:01:33~ there was a jump scare,
- 1:01:37it got me pretty good. The shot of Don Cheadle creepily behind him,
- 1:01:40Yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
- 1:01:40that was good. That was good.
- 1:01:46But yeah, it is it's kind of a shame this movie didn't do well because
- 1:01:49it s really seems like they tried so hard.
- 1:01:52Like they tried their best.
- 1:01:54Yeah. and a lot of the budget I read went to the visual effects.
- 1:02:00So
- 1:02:00Yeah.
- 1:02:01they didn't I mean it was just that time in two thousand.
- 1:02:04It was just cutting edge at the time.
- 1:02:06So it was kind of hit or miss sometimes.
- 1:02:08But I a couple of things I was gonna bring up was so the movie was directed
- 1:02:14by Brian De Palma and
- 1:02:15Mm-hmm.
- 1:02:16this this was not a good experience for him.
- 1:02:19That I th
- 1:02:20Yeah.
- 1:02:20he got hired on late. ~
- 1:02:23And so the script
- 1:02:24He's the second director, yeah.
- 1:02:26yeah, the script was already written and the characters were cast,
- 1:02:29so he didn't really have a say in that.
- 1:02:31I I think maybe he must have just gotten hired because they needed someone that
- 1:02:35could like complete the movie for him.
- 1:02:37~ but it was such a frustrating experience for him that he gave
- 1:02:42up like filming movies for studios.
- 1:02:45Like he said, I'm never filming for a studio again and he to this
- 1:02:49day he's only produced or like directed independent features.
- 1:02:53Like he g
- 1:02:53Wow.
- 1:02:54he he turned his back on the studio system after making this movie.
- 1:02:58my goodness.
- 1:03:00But do you know who was originally tapped to direct this movie?
- 1:03:04Did you read that?
- 1:03:05I saw the name but I didn't it didn't register,
- 1:03:07like I didn't know who it was.
- 1:03:08Gore Verbinsky?
- 1:03:09It was Gore Verbinski. Do you know who that is?
- 1:03:12Yeah.
- 1:03:12No
- 1:03:14He directed the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.
- 1:03:16Yeah. So had he
- 1:03:16Are you serious? He left to do that.
- 1:03:21Well, I I don't know if it was right away 'cause there was some other stuff he did,
- 1:03:25but
- 1:03:25Yeah.
- 1:03:26had he directed this and had such a bad experience like Brian De Palma,
- 1:03:30he might never have directed those Pirates movies.
- 1:03:34Another Disney attraction turn movie.
- 1:03:35Yeah.
- 1:03:36So we'll we'll be getting to pirates
- 1:03:38Thank you.
- 1:03:39pretty soon. So I thought that was kind of a cool cool pr yeah.
- 1:03:42I'm grateful for that fun fact.
- 1:03:43Wow.
- 1:03:47Man, prior to the Caribbean.
- 1:03:48He was
- 1:03:49fresh off the ~ the completion of Mouse Hunt,
- 1:03:51you know, and they really wanted him.
- 1:03:53Hey, Mauso was good.
- 1:03:56I really want to rewatch that one as an adult.
- 1:03:59~ I think that would be funny.
- 1:04:02Yeah. Alright, so are we passing this?
- 1:04:04Alright.
- 1:04:04I definitely. I think this one gets a point.
- 1:04:07Got a point, we got a point.
- 1:04:09Our next test is the sound design.
- 1:04:14I liked the sound design actually.
- 1:04:16I wanna say that. It the sound design thrived where
- 1:04:21the music dived. ~
- 1:04:28It was just I I thought before I even realized what the wind noises were,
- 1:04:32like I didn't realize it was the Martians like
- 1:04:37the DNA noise thing. I I just thought,
- 1:04:42that Mars wind sounds different than Earth wind.
- 1:04:47And fire.
- 1:04:49In fire, yeah. so yeah,
- 1:04:53I th I thought I thought it was really good.
- 1:04:55Like the wind on Mars is very interesting and different and unique.
- 1:04:58Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:00And then with space movies you're gonna have like spaceship sounds
- 1:05:05and like buttons and beep bop boops and
- 1:05:08Yeah.
- 1:05:09nothing stood out, but it didn't take me out of the movie.
- 1:05:13So I don't know, what did
- 1:05:14No, I
- 1:05:15you think?
- 1:05:16I no, I I thought it was great sound design too.
- 1:05:18~
- 1:05:18Okay.
- 1:05:19for the same reasons. And it wasn't that any any piece of it specifically stood out,
- 1:05:26but I could also tell that they were like kinda like how you said they were
- 1:05:29ha none of these things exist,
- 1:05:31like with
- 1:05:31Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:32Mart like I could tell that they were creating a lot of sounds and then also Yeah,
- 1:05:38that like i I could tell it was good foley for like
- 1:05:41Every flip of a switch and all of the computer
- 1:05:43Yes.
- 1:05:44stuff on the ships and unlocking things and just I could tell it wasn't just like
- 1:05:50stock sound effects. Like it seemed like they did that for the movie.
- 1:05:54Yeah.
- 1:05:54Right. Yeah. So
- 1:05:57Yeah, I thought it was good. And I I would
- 1:06:00All right.
- 1:06:00agree, it it it ~ it filled the gaps where the music was kinda lacking.
- 1:06:05Yeah. For sure. Let's
- 1:06:06Yeah.
- 1:06:08we'll definitely pass that one.
- 1:06:10Okay. So our next test is the cool credits test.
- 1:06:16Jonathan, did this movie have good credits?
- 1:06:19I wanna say absolutely not.
- 1:06:22Nothing. Yeah.
- 1:06:24If I had to choose, I would say definitely not.
- 1:06:26Yeah. It was there there was nothing at the start really,
- 1:06:30just text overlay as the opening scene.
- 1:06:32Just fading in and out.
- 1:06:34The ending was a they see Jim fly off on the spaceship with the aliens
- 1:06:39Mm-hmm. And it sort of freeze frames the galaxy and then that's when
- 1:06:39and then you Yeah.
- 1:06:42the words come up.
- 1:06:43Yeah. So it's just like a freeze frame.
- 1:06:48And not even an iconic one like,
- 1:06:48But when like Star Wars
- 1:06:49you know, Harry Potter
- 1:06:51flying off with the firebolt and his face fills up the whole screen.
- 1:06:56Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:06:58I I thought you were going Star Wars where like the entering like
- 1:07:02the opening credits intro the words literally float in the screen like credits
- 1:07:06yeah. Yeah, no.
- 1:07:07would.
- 1:07:08Yeah. No, I I I would say no to the cool credits.
- 1:07:15All right. So our last test is the
- 1:07:19Rewatchable review factor. I don't know if this is a rewatchable movie.
- 1:07:24I might watch it more than w maybe once.
- 1:07:26But I'm not I'm not enjoying this movie that much.
- 1:07:30Hate to say it.
- 1:07:32Yeah, I
- 1:07:32I I didn't really enjoy it much more the second time I watched it after watching
- 1:07:37it a couple years ago. I remember it being kind
- 1:07:39Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:39of a mixed bag of like, yeah, there was some cool shots in it.
- 1:07:42~ but like I I found the story to be kind of lackluster.
- 1:07:47I didn't really like the acting either.
- 1:07:50And
- 1:07:50Mm-hmm.
- 1:07:51it's not gonna be like a soundtrack I go to,
- 1:07:52so that's kinda and and at the end of the day,
- 1:07:54It's not. It's pretty important.
- 1:07:56I didn't write down a single quote,
- 1:07:57you know?
- 1:07:58That's embarrassing if you didn't write one quote.
- 1:08:00I didn't I didn't even bother.
- 1:08:01Yeah. Didn't even bother.
- 1:08:02There was a couple
- 1:08:04All right.
- 1:08:05in there, but I just knew it wasn't gonna pass.
- 1:08:08Hmm. Yeah.
- 1:08:10Yeah, I I really don't plan on rewatching this one.
- 1:08:14We're failing it. Bang Alright.
- 1:08:18Well, that's our first part of the test.
- 1:08:21let's count up, shall we?
- 1:08:23Yeah, where are we at so far?
- 1:08:24We got honestly scored a little bit higher than I thought.
- 1:08:27I think
- 1:08:32One, two, three, four points. Four isn't too bad.
- 1:08:34Points, okay. Okay.
- 1:08:36Four out of ten.
- 1:08:37There's still space to get stapleist.
- 1:08:40Some bonus points.
- 1:08:40I don't I think
- 1:08:41s or stapleist is out of the question.
- 1:08:44So there's enough to get staple.
- 1:08:44Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:46~
- 1:08:47let's talk DVD well let's blah blah.
- 1:08:51~ So yeah,
- 1:08:55four out of ten, objectively, that's not very good.
- 1:08:58But let's see.
- 1:08:59Yeah.
- 1:09:01We we have a ~ solid bonus round.
- 1:09:06To help, you know, bump that score up for us if we like.
- 1:09:09So there's five more chances to get staple or stapleist.
- 1:09:13So number one, the test is the DVD menu test.
- 1:09:16I personally watch this on DVD.
- 1:09:19Your copy, actually.
- 1:09:20Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:09:21I just want to say, this DVD sucks.
- 1:09:24This menu this DVD menu like I expect the DVD menu to be good if
- 1:09:30I'm gonna actually take the time and put the DVD in.
- 1:09:33It should have been two
- 1:09:34two thousand was like cutting edge DVDs,
- 1:09:36Peak Peak DVD.
- 1:09:37you know? Like
- 1:09:38everyone's trying to go out with this new technology.
- 1:09:41Mm hmm.
- 1:09:41Yeah, it was just so boring. I don't know.
- 1:09:45Okay.
- 1:09:45And I'm not gonna even put a screenshot on because if you're gonna watch this movie,
- 1:09:49you're gonna have to get the DVD too.
- 1:09:50So you'll see it for
- 1:09:50You'll see it for yourself.
- 1:09:52yourself. So I'm
- 1:09:54Okay.
- 1:09:55just gonna pa I'm not gonna pass that one.
- 1:09:56Then we've got the theme part test.
- 1:10:00Obviously. Yeah, it was based off of that.
- 1:10:04We've been passing all of them for this.
- 1:10:05Yeah, automatic point. ~
- 1:10:05Automatic point.
- 1:10:08yeah, any anything space themed or an anything it could have been Mars themed,
- 1:10:13that there's there's something cool there.
- 1:10:14Mm-hmm.
- 1:10:15Even if it wasn't based on a on a Run.
- 1:10:18Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:18there is a hidden Mickey, speaking of theme parks,
- 1:10:21but it's it's sort of like in the movie.
- 1:10:23momentarily as you see the Mars recovery vehicle approach the planet,
- 1:10:28Mars itself, the rotating circular hub of the spaceship,
- 1:10:33and the round satellite dish sitting on its spine line up perfectly
- 1:10:38to form the friendly and familiar Mickey Mouse logo.
- 1:10:41Wow.
- 1:10:42I like it when they put hidden Mickeys in these sh in these movies.
- 1:10:43Yeah. That's cool.
- 1:10:44That's pretty cool.
- 1:10:46~ but yeah, we we're we're gonna pass that.
- 1:10:49Easy.
- 1:10:49Okay, bonus point.
- 1:10:51Alright, bonus point. Then we've got fantastic foods and where to find them.
- 1:11:00I'm passing this.
- 1:11:03You're gonna tell me.
- 1:11:03I thought you might.
- 1:11:05You're gonna tell me. First of all,
- 1:11:08if you have a space movie, I require you to have a food
- 1:11:13or drink item in your space module.
- 1:11:16Because floating.
- 1:11:17Floating in zero G. Yeah.
- 1:11:19And on top of that, if it's a Dr.
- 1:11:22Pepper Capri Sun, absolutely!
- 1:11:24I wrote the exac I
- 1:11:25wrote the exact same thing, Capri Sun,
- 1:11:27Doctor Pepper.
- 1:11:27Bro, that looked awesome.
- 1:11:31I would I might even prefer a Dr.
- 1:11:33Pepper Capri Sun. It might not be as fizzy.
- 1:11:35I wonder how that works. ~ and
- 1:11:37Yeah.
- 1:11:38I'm not the only one that wondered how that works because
- 1:11:43in 1985 astronauts really did drink soda in space as part of an experiment.
- 1:11:48So that's pretty cool. I don't know if there's any other food in this besides like
- 1:11:55plants.
- 1:11:56Well, there's ~
- 1:11:57They were going to eat.
- 1:11:58there is a DNA sequence made out of and Ms.
- 1:12:03Yeah.
- 1:12:03That's right, that's right,
- 1:12:04that's right. Okay. And he ate Everybody loves M's.
- 1:12:07And he like pulls one out of the sequence and eats it.
- 1:12:09For sure.
- 1:12:09So
- 1:12:11I I thought like you've got food and drink
- 1:12:14Food and drink.
- 1:12:15product placement too in space.
- 1:12:16Gotta love it.
- 1:12:17That was a great product placement.
- 1:12:19I wonder
- 1:12:21if they came out with Dr. Pepper Capri Suns.
- 1:12:23Probably not. Probably not.
- 1:12:26But yeah,
- 1:12:27I was gonna give this one a point 'cause I I thought that was kinda cool.
- 1:12:30Yeah, for sure, for sure. Alright.
- 1:12:32So then we've got our iconic props test.
- 1:12:36Hmm. What kind of prop is in this?
- 1:12:41The only thing I wrote down was the neck Flash Gordon necklace.
- 1:12:50Yeah, I I wrote that one down too,
- 1:12:52but I don't know if that's good enough to like give it the point.
- 1:12:54It's not it's not good enough.
- 1:12:55It's it's
- 1:12:56That's not good enough.
- 1:12:58it's definitely not even anything I remembered from the first time
- 1:13:02I watched the movie. That it was like a special thing that it gives at the end.
- 1:13:05Yeah.
- 1:13:06Yeah. And like my
- 1:13:09my thing is my way my I guess litmus test to see if this passes is can I
- 1:13:14see this in the Smithsonian and know what it's from without reading the plaque?
- 1:13:19And I'm not I don't even know what it looks like now.
- 1:13:21Yeah, I don't I don't think so.
- 1:13:25So we're gonna fail that one.
- 1:13:26Yeah, it was just like
- 1:13:27a you know.
- 1:13:30Just was not very good. Okay, so then we've got the what are we on?
- 1:13:35Our last one, right?
- 1:13:38Last one, yeah.
- 1:13:39Costumes test, costume design.
- 1:13:42This one was a little bit hard to believe for me.
- 1:13:45In the way
- 1:13:46Mm. Mm-hmm.
- 1:13:46that it costs so much money for these spacesuits.
- 1:13:50And did you know that a real NASA spacesuit costs like upwards of
- 1:13:55ten to twelve million dollars?
- 1:13:56I I did read that and that surprised me.
- 1:14:01That surprised me too, but I guess it
- 1:14:02Yeah.
- 1:14:02makes sense 'cause they have to be like pressure their own little spaceships,
- 1:14:06basically.
- 1:14:07Yeah. That's crazy.
- 1:14:09~ each one of these spacesuits costs around a hundred thousand dollars.
- 1:14:14I don't know if that's a true fact,
- 1:14:15because it I don't believe it.
- 1:14:17~ like as a costume?
- 1:14:18It the movie. Yeah.
- 1:14:21Hm.
- 1:14:23I don't believe that. It
- 1:14:24I don't know.
- 1:14:24was hard. They had e every actor had their own crew member ~ to
- 1:14:28get themselves into space suits.
- 1:14:30~
- 1:14:31Yeah.
- 1:14:31it weighed sixty two pounds each and it took them forty five minutes
- 1:14:35to get inside each suit.
- 1:14:37Wow.
- 1:14:38And they were like little film lights inside all the actors' helmets
- 1:14:41to illuminate their
- 1:14:42I mean
- 1:14:42faces during the shots.
- 1:14:44that that makes sense actually,
- 1:14:45yeah. I wouldn't have thought about that,
- 1:14:46Yeah. But why are you dropping why are you dropping a hundred thousand dollars
- 1:14:47but yeah, why why is their face so well lit?
- 1:14:49Yeah.
- 1:14:51on that? I could do that. I can go to Michael's right now and make
- 1:14:52Yeah.
- 1:14:54a suit for at least five thousand dollars.
- 1:14:58Probably get away with something passable.
- 1:14:59Yeah. I know. That's crazy to
- 1:15:00Maybe not with a helmet, but man.
- 1:15:03to think even like yeah, if I had five thousand dollars could not could
- 1:15:07I not come up with something? Like
- 1:15:09Yeah. I also heard a fun fact in the behind the scenes he didn't say who,
- 1:15:15but he said that they had to like stop filming every once in a while because
- 1:15:20it was a challenge because one of had a tobacco habit and he had to get
- 1:15:24out of the suit so that he can take a smoke break.
- 1:15:28Hmm.
- 1:15:28And I wonder
- 1:15:31who do you think it would have been?
- 1:15:32I think Gary Sinise looks like he smokes.
- 1:15:36Yeah, I would s well, I don't know.
- 1:15:39Don Sheetle
- 1:15:39could also smoke.
- 1:15:42I to be honest, all of them look like they probably smoked at some point.
- 1:15:46That's that's probably true.
- 1:15:48I just wanna know who it was.
- 1:15:51Yeah. Interesting.
- 1:15:53They weren't willing to they weren't willing to tell on so but I thought that
- 1:15:57was interesting. ~ but yeah, when it comes to costumes,
- 1:16:02like I'm not a as impressed as the country bears.
- 1:16:05Duh.
- 1:16:06Yeah. ~ I I I was gonna say that the astronaut costumes are cool,
- 1:16:11but I'm less impressed that they spent a hundred thousand dollars making So
- 1:16:13That's what that's what kills me.
- 1:16:15Yeah.
- 1:16:17I feel like I don't wanna give it a point.
- 1:16:19My favorite part of the the helmet was that the glass was kinda like pointed.
- 1:16:23Almost like a visor.
- 1:16:27Yeah, and if any of these were like at the Smithsonian,
- 1:16:29I would be like disappointed it wasn't something from like the Martian
- 1:16:33or like Apollo thirteen or just an
- 1:16:33True. True.
- 1:16:35actual spacesuit. So I don't know.
- 1:16:37In actual spacesuit. They have that.
- 1:16:39They need a Smithsonian needs
- 1:16:42to have an American movie museum.
- 1:16:44I feel like that's a part of our
- 1:16:49Hmm. Yeah.
- 1:16:49History enough, you know.
- 1:16:51That should be the next one. Okay.
- 1:16:53Well, I don't I don't think we're gonna pass this.
- 1:16:55How about you?
- 1:16:56No, I'm good to skip.
- 1:16:59Hundred
- 1:16:59thousand dollars. Are you kidding me?
- 1:17:00There's gotta be some fraud in there.
- 1:17:02Failed. Okay,
- 1:17:05well, let's count them all up.
- 1:17:09We got zero, one, zero,
- 1:17:13one, hmm. Jonathan,
- 1:17:16this movie has a total of one,
- 1:17:20two, three, four, five, and six points.
- 1:17:24It got six.
- 1:17:25It got six? Okay.
- 1:17:28But that is not enough to become a staple.
- 1:17:31So unfortunately,
- 1:17:31Mm.
- 1:17:32Mission to Mars 2000 is officially a quack.
- 1:17:37IQ certified quack.
- 1:17:40Hate to say it.
- 1:17:41Mom was right.
- 1:17:43Perfect. She knew she knew not to show you quacks growing up.
- 1:17:50Man, that that sucks. But yeah.
- 1:17:55We did it and we're that's why we're here.
- 1:17:57We're just here to rate our movies.
- 1:17:59Yeah. You know, one one thing that we didn't ~ touch
- 1:18:04on was how how does this compare as far as the ~ to the ride itself?
- 1:18:10Like is it a good adaptation of the ride?
- 1:18:13We'll never know. I guess we'll never know.
- 1:18:13We won't know 'cause I mean
- 1:18:15it's hard to know just watching a video of it on YouTube.
- 1:18:18I I guess the it's kinda similar as it it is like a mission to Mars
- 1:18:23and something goes wrong. It's kind of like this meteor storm.
- 1:18:27that like causes ship damage and then they have to get back.
- 1:18:30But this yeah,
- 1:18:30Like that little micrometeor that came through the ship and shot his hand.
- 1:18:34like through his hand?
- 1:18:35Yeah.
- 1:18:37But other than that, like they really like took it one step further with like,
- 1:18:42well what is this meteor storm on Mars?
- 1:18:45Is it some being that is a higher
- 1:18:48Right.
- 1:18:49evolved version of us?
- 1:18:52Not a big fan of that. Yeah.
- 1:18:54Yeah.
- 1:18:55~ one other thing,
- 1:18:58I didn't know where to put this,
- 1:18:59so I just put it towards the end.
- 1:19:01If you watch the D V D, there is one singular trailer
- 1:19:05~ before the movie,
- 1:19:09and that movie is a trailer of a movie that I've never seen or even heard of.
- 1:19:14And it just blew my mind that
- 1:19:16it's a real movie. I thought it was fake.
- 1:19:19~
- 1:19:19What is it?
- 1:19:20it is a Robin Williams movie.
- 1:19:24let's see wet see, let's see. It is like he's literally
- 1:19:30a robot that the dude from Jurassic Park and his family and it's like Bicentennial
- 1:19:34bicentennial man. Yeah.
- 1:19:36Man, but it's like
- 1:19:37Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:39it's Robin Williams as the robot,
- 1:19:41and the robot looks like Robin Williams.
- 1:19:41Yeah. Mm-hmm.
- 1:19:43And
- 1:19:44like they put like skin on him to look like he is Robin Williams.
- 1:19:48It's
- 1:19:48Yeah.
- 1:19:49a super weird it's like Mrs. Doubtfire,
- 1:19:51but
- 1:19:53We
- 1:19:54Bionic.
- 1:19:55we n we should cover that one because actually
- 1:19:57We should?
- 1:19:57that is one that Kelsey grew up watching,
- 1:20:00actually. I watched it a
- 1:20:00Okay. Okay.
- 1:20:01few years ago 'cause I was curious about it too.
- 1:20:04it's a Chris it's a Chris Columbus movie.
- 1:20:04It looked crazy. Really?
- 1:20:07So
- 1:20:08that's that's why I wanted to watch it partially too,
- 1:20:11'cause I I'm a big fan of his movies,
- 1:20:12It I was sold by the trailer. It looked great.
- 1:20:12so yeah.
- 1:20:15Yeah, we we should cover that one.
- 1:20:17That one would be fun. It was interesting.
- 1:20:19~
- 1:20:20I was just like blown away. I was like,
- 1:20:22This is a real
- 1:20:22movie? ~
- 1:20:23Ha ha.
- 1:20:24we got a gift. That is such a great I I d I didn't know I had
- 1:20:29any other Robin Williams movies to watch.
- 1:20:31Yeah.
- 1:20:35Okay.
- 1:20:36any other like final notes or things you need to to bring up here at the end?
- 1:20:41The the Yeah.
- 1:20:41I got nothing. I like the movie,
- 1:20:43I'm probably not gonna watch it much.
- 1:20:45But you know, whatever.
- 1:20:47Yeah, I I I was mixed on it. It was like it had some good good moments to it.
- 1:20:52And I liked the the premise and stuff,
- 1:20:54but it yeah, it just wasn't it wasn't that good.
- 1:20:57Yeah. That was not great.
- 1:20:57~
- 1:20:59I I did want to at least comment on the movie does take place in
- 1:21:03the year twenty twenty.
- 1:21:05~ yeah, that's right.
- 1:21:06And
- 1:21:07and we don't even have to go into the whole like that's not what twenty twenty
- 1:21:10looked like, but I wanted to call out the the car that he drives up.
- 1:21:14Electric car, yeah.
- 1:21:14It was supposed
- 1:21:15to be like a futuristic car. It was like an Isuzu ~
- 1:21:17Ha ha ha ha.
- 1:21:20like SUV convertible type thing.
- 1:21:23Yeah.
- 1:21:24I got a picture of it here, let me pull it up 'cause I I got that set up.
- 1:21:27But yeah, it was just like that's what they thought we were gonna be driving
- 1:21:34in the future.
- 1:21:36Pretty cool. I mean we do have electric cars.
- 1:21:37And it was actually a car that was sold from from
- 1:21:41ninety seven to two thousand one.
- 1:21:43Yeah. But
- 1:21:45But ~
- 1:21:45not in America, surely.
- 1:21:47yeah, the afterwards they they stopped making it.
- 1:21:49I don't even
- 1:21:50~
- 1:21:50know if that car brand is around,
- 1:21:52is Suzu. I don't know. But
- 1:21:52Izuzu? I don't
- 1:21:55know.
- 1:21:55Wow, yeah. Well they got it they got the Tesla thing right,
- 1:21:58kind of. We got SUVs.
- 1:22:00Him.
- 1:22:02It is always cool to like see what people's vision of the future is gonna be.
- 1:22:05This movie really didn't even focus on that 'cause they they did have this like this
- 1:22:10new car and then like Woody's character was like,
- 1:22:12I'm all about combustible engines,
- 1:22:15Internal combustion.
- 1:22:15you know, and he's got
- 1:22:16yeah, he's got like an old Corvette or something,
- 1:22:18so
- 1:22:19Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:22:21We are going to Mars, but probably not at the end of this decade.
- 1:22:25We're still going to the moon again.
- 1:22:27that seems to be our I think before we get people on Mars they need to
- 1:22:31do the moon base.
- 1:22:32And that's gonna be our next 20,
- 1:22:3330 years, probably. So maybe by the end of our lifetime we'll see a man on Mars.
- 1:22:39I don't know. Until then, I'll be watching a movie about Mars and astronauts,
- 1:22:46and it won't be this one. It'll be the Martian.
- 1:22:50Another day, another quack. Well everyone,
- 1:22:52our only question left is would you go to Mars if you had the chance?
- 1:22:55I feel like for me, my answer is
- 1:23:02Mm.
