- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Elena here. Oh it's Elena Wood. Yes, hi Elena,
- 0:05Speaker 1: how are you?
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hello? Thank you doing good?
- 0:09Speaker 3: Thanks good, good Nightingale College is where Elena comes to us.
- 0:13Speaker 4: From, and she's here to talk about tips to improve
- 0:18Speaker 4: your financial wellbeing. Please improve my financial wellbeing now, please.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yes, it's a thing that can definitely happen in the
- 0:29Speaker 2: snap of the fingers. So we are, we are geared
- 0:33Speaker 2: of and I'm ready.
- 0:34Speaker 1: To go in just the blink of an eye.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Exactly, exactly.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yes.
- 0:41Speaker 1: So where do we start?
- 0:44Speaker 2: So the first that I have is to do your
- 0:47Speaker 2: best to follow the fifty thirty twenty rule. And this
- 0:54Speaker 2: recommends that fifty percent of your income goes to needs,
- 0:58Speaker 2: thirty percent wants, and then twenty percent to savings. And
- 1:03Speaker 2: I realized there's probably going to be some some variation
- 1:06Speaker 2: for a lot of folks within this model, but this
- 1:10Speaker 2: recommendation kind of helps to ensure that you do have
- 1:13Speaker 2: some set aside for savings. It also puts a pretty
- 1:17Speaker 2: big amount to needs, which is obviously the priority, while
- 1:22Speaker 2: still allowing for a little bit of a little bit
- 1:24Speaker 2: of fun in there, so you can go to the
- 1:26Speaker 2: movies and have your vacations and things like that.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:30Speaker 4: I would just say there was just one step you
- 1:32Speaker 4: need to have before this, and that is to have
- 1:34Speaker 4: an income.
- 1:35Speaker 1: You need to have an inpacme to begin with. Yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 1: or just.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Your inheritance whatever, Well, that's I count that as income.
- 1:44Speaker 4: So it's fifty thirty twenty fifty thirty twenty, yes, all right.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Now what's next next is to and I probably should
- 1:52Speaker 2: have done this one first now that I'm thinking about it,
- 1:54Speaker 2: is to pay attention to your account balances, just bringing
- 1:58Speaker 2: some awareness to how much is coming in, how much
- 2:01Speaker 2: is going out, where it's going, and just paying attention
- 2:06Speaker 2: knowing if you have a big bill coming up, things
- 2:08Speaker 2: like that, so you can be prepared.
- 2:10Speaker 4: I always look at the balances, and as long as
- 2:13Speaker 4: there's not a minus sign in front of it, I
- 2:15Speaker 4: feel like I'm.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Okay, you're good. I'm really good.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I've noticed that some banks and credit unions help you
- 2:23Speaker 3: keep track of this, like if you have their app,
- 2:26Speaker 3: they'll break it down for you. You spent this much
- 2:28Speaker 3: at restaurants, you spent this much.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I don't want to I don't want to know because
- 2:33Speaker 4: they also they also break it down in terms of
- 2:35Speaker 4: the liquor store and I don't want to.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I just don't want to know.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Yeah, your bank probably does have a pretty nice kind
- 2:43Speaker 2: of built in budget tracker. Mine has a cute little
- 2:47Speaker 2: pie grass that I can look at. And sometimes I
- 2:50Speaker 2: do need to specify what different organizations are because it'll
- 2:54Speaker 2: think something's a restaurant when it was a store or
- 2:58Speaker 2: whatever it might be.
- 2:59Speaker 4: So, yeah, so yours, your bank has a pie ground.
- 3:02Speaker 4: I'm a surprise you spend that much money on pot.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Hi is my favorite dessert, which we can get into
- 3:10Speaker 2: that later.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Okay, what's next.
- 3:14Speaker 2: The next tip is to pay off debts in small amounts,
- 3:18Speaker 2: giving ourselves kind of early wins by paying off some
- 3:22Speaker 2: of those smaller debts to give ourselves a victory, have
- 3:26Speaker 2: a little bit of momentum behind us.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, if you have.
- 3:32Speaker 4: I had somebody tell me once if you have a
- 3:34Speaker 4: you know, high, fairly high interest loans, that it's best
- 3:38Speaker 4: to try and pay them off as quickly as you can.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah, that interest can really and you know, I think
- 3:45Speaker 2: we're seeing that a lot in the economy right now.
- 3:47Speaker 2: The high indust rates can really really add up over time,
- 3:52Speaker 2: and so if you are able prioritizing those ones, definitely
- 3:56Speaker 2: can say the old lot of money in the long run.
- 3:58Speaker 1: All right, what's next next.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Is to get to know your money mindset. And some
- 4:06Speaker 2: people have a lot of fear or anxiety and stress
- 4:10Speaker 2: around finances, and some people feel really abundant and lucy
- 4:16Speaker 2: lucy with their finances. So just getting to kind of
- 4:20Speaker 2: understand from your own history, maybe if you grew up poor,
- 4:26Speaker 2: you might have more of a scarcity mindset, if you
- 4:28Speaker 2: grew up really affluent, you might have more of an
- 4:31Speaker 2: abundance mindset. So just becoming aware of your own feelings
- 4:35Speaker 2: around money and how that impacts the way that you spend.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Even my grandfather ended up being a relatively wealthy man,
- 4:43Speaker 4: but he still would always do things like, you know,
- 4:47Speaker 4: hush puppies would go on sale at the shoe stool,
- 4:50Speaker 4: who if whoever sold touch puppy, and he'd go buy
- 4:53Speaker 4: a new pair, even though he didn't need them. He'd
- 4:56Speaker 4: go buy a new pair and then put them in
- 4:57Speaker 4: the closet in case he needed them in the future.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Oh sure, yeah.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Yeah, So.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I think a lot of us have some patterns like that,
- 5:08Speaker 2: and just becoming more aware that can help us to
- 5:10Speaker 2: save money over time. If we're buying things that we
- 5:14Speaker 2: don't need just because they're on sale, or you know,
- 5:17Speaker 2: we might we might need it on a rainy day.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 2: What's next next is to do your best to make
- 5:26Speaker 2: financial decisions when you are feeling calm, So trying not
- 5:32Speaker 2: to make those purchases when you're feeling stressed, you're feeling
- 5:36Speaker 2: urgent about them, but giving yourself a moment to kind
- 5:39Speaker 2: of step back, take a breath, get yourself centered, and
- 5:45Speaker 2: not make decisions out of fear and stress.
- 5:48Speaker 4: You know, it's hard, it's hard to do. And then
- 5:51Speaker 4: you think, I've got medical bills coming up.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and if you already are feeling stressed around finance says,
- 6:00Speaker 2: it's it's a difficult place for sure. Which my final
- 6:04Speaker 2: step is to consult an expert. Reach out to your
- 6:08Speaker 2: four A one key advisor, go into your bank and
- 6:10Speaker 2: talk to the loan manager whoever you can find that
- 6:13Speaker 2: has these expertise, try and connect with them and get support.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Yeah. Usually there are people that you don't have to
- 6:20Speaker 4: pay extra for it. There are people available to help
- 6:24Speaker 4: counsel you financially.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, absolutely.
- 6:29Speaker 4: All right, all right, Elena would if people want to
- 6:32Speaker 4: find out more about all of this stuff that we
- 6:34Speaker 4: don't like to think about where do we go?
- 6:37Speaker 2: You know you can learn more about this, as well
- 6:40Speaker 2: as Nightingale's amazing programs by visiting Nightingale dot EDUK.
- 6:45Speaker 1: You very much
