- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, we rolling okay, Yeah, yeah, he gets a drill,
- 0:04Speaker 1: he knows the drill. Get it close to the mouth,
- 0:05Speaker 1: don't be scared. Yeah, uh a little bit.
- 0:09Speaker 2: We were talking Connor stillience, let's give a round plus
- 0:11Speaker 2: Conor science on the bus. Michigan man. We were talking
- 0:18Speaker 2: before about a little little football, a little everything. But
- 0:22Speaker 2: let me give you my thought of who you are. Okay,
- 0:25Speaker 2: and we can we can go from there because I
- 0:26Speaker 2: want to get in your Michigan fandom to start. Every
- 0:29Speaker 2: major program has a top five percent of fans that
- 0:33Speaker 2: are true psychos when it comes to their program. Ohio
- 0:37Speaker 2: State has it, Michigan has it, Alabama, Georgia, all these
- 0:40Speaker 2: Nebraska all of them have these crazy, these crazy fans
- 0:45Speaker 2: that live and die with their program. You are one
- 0:49Speaker 2: of the five percent that actually made a difference in
- 0:52Speaker 2: their program besides cheering on Saturdays. Is that Is that
- 0:56Speaker 2: a fair way to put you?
- 0:57Speaker 1: I mean, I guess you take a lot of pride
- 0:59Speaker 1: in that.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I guess would I just love Michigan?
- 1:04Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:05Speaker 2: And that wasn't me saying crazy as like a shah
- 1:08Speaker 2: or anything like that. It's just like all these big
- 1:10Speaker 2: programs have these guys that like love, love Michigan, love Nebraska,
- 1:15Speaker 2: like love all those things, and every one of those
- 1:17Speaker 2: fans think to themselves, how can I help the school
- 1:21Speaker 2: become better?
- 1:22Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:23Speaker 2: And you literally had the traits and the abilities with
- 1:25Speaker 2: your military background and your ability to break down all
- 1:29Speaker 2: of these things that you watch in your documentary that
- 1:32Speaker 2: you truly were able to help a team. Yeah, you
- 1:35Speaker 2: gotta feel amazing.
- 1:36Speaker 3: I mean, I don't remember exactly what game it was,
- 1:39Speaker 3: but I remember the first time walking into the Big
- 1:41Speaker 3: House through section fourteen a season tickets row row eighty three,
- 1:45Speaker 3: see twenty six and twenty seven, walking in probably three
- 1:49Speaker 3: four years old, just kind of told myself like yeah,
- 1:51Speaker 3: I'll I'll be down there one day, no way, and
- 1:54Speaker 3: just kind of figured out with that and stay mine.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'm so excited that you're on because again, like I,
- 2:05Speaker 1: we got to play, We got to play at our schools,
- 2:08Speaker 1: and there comes a time for everybody where that you
- 2:10Speaker 1: have to retire, whether it's in middle school, high school, college, NFL, whoever.
- 2:15Speaker 1: If you get to play a long time, that's awesome.
- 2:17Speaker 1: But you understanding and figuring out like okay, I wasn't
- 2:21Speaker 1: able to make it at this D one level how
- 2:23Speaker 1: can I carve out my own path a different route,
- 2:26Speaker 1: And I feel like you're somebody who's been able to
- 2:27Speaker 1: accomplish that.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yep.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Is that fair to say?
- 2:30Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean that's why you know, everyone goes to
- 2:33Speaker 3: the nail, Okay, I mean to serve their country. But everyone,
- 2:35Speaker 3: you know, everyone has a different reason. And I just
- 2:38Speaker 3: kind of well, every major successful head coach, legendary head
- 2:45Speaker 3: coach you're talking like Bud Wilkinson in Oklahoma, Osbourne, John Wooden,
- 2:53Speaker 3: Greg Popovich, Coach k Woody, Hayes, bo Schen Beckler all
- 2:59Speaker 3: had one thing in counting served in the military four
- 3:04Speaker 3: to five years at least, So okay, they got to
- 3:09Speaker 3: be onto something right, right. So and this is going
- 3:12Speaker 3: through your brain, Well, well yeah, this is early high school.
- 3:16Speaker 3: I mean I always knew I wanted to coach at Michigan,
- 3:19Speaker 3: and then when it came time to you know, okay,
- 3:23Speaker 3: what exactly is the route? You know, I applied to me.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I applied to two schools, Michigan and the Naval Academy,
- 3:29Speaker 3: got accepted the Michigan, got waitlisted at the Naval Academy.
- 3:31Speaker 3: So in my mind, like okay, whatever, going to Michigan
- 3:35Speaker 3: and then got the call, and it was actually about
- 3:39Speaker 3: two weeks before last day of school senior year. I
- 3:43Speaker 3: get a call Annapolis, Maryland. Ope, I mean, I'm in
- 3:47Speaker 3: the middle of class. Well I better answer this one.
- 3:49Speaker 3: So I answer it and said, whoever it is the
- 3:51Speaker 3: missions in the Naval Academy, do you have a minute.
- 3:55Speaker 3: I'm in the middle of class. So I'm like, uh,
- 3:57Speaker 3: let me call you back. So I call him back
- 4:00Speaker 3: and so, oh, you've been accepted. So they actually they said,
- 4:07Speaker 3: but we need a response right now because we've got
- 4:09Speaker 3: to let the people behind you know. So in my
- 4:12Speaker 3: mind I just went back to all those coaches and
- 4:15Speaker 3: I'm like, well, I guess I gotta do it. And
- 4:19Speaker 3: so I said, all right, yep, I'm in. And then
- 4:22Speaker 3: I called my parents and they work at the They
- 4:25Speaker 3: teach at the middle school right down the road. So they, oh,
- 4:28Speaker 3: come over, let's talk about it. So I get there
- 4:30Speaker 3: and they're like, so what are you thinking. I'm like, oh,
- 4:31Speaker 3: I already told them yeah, no true. And then just
- 4:36Speaker 3: went from there.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And you when did you decide you wanted to be
- 4:39Speaker 1: like a head coach was like, you're.
- 4:41Speaker 3: You're three years old.
- 4:44Speaker 1: You didn't even care to play you're like I want.
- 4:45Speaker 3: To be you know, Yeah I played. I played, but
- 4:48Speaker 3: like I always so senior year, my dad's the eighth
- 4:51Speaker 3: grade it was the eighth grade football coach. Uh his
- 4:54Speaker 3: record against our rivals was like twenty one zero to
- 4:59Speaker 3: one his career and uh yeah yeah, so I mean
- 5:05Speaker 3: I'm still waiting for them to build a statue at
- 5:06Speaker 3: scripts middle school. But so my senior year, I didn't play.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I just played. I always played basketball. And then I
- 5:16Speaker 3: helped coach eighth grade football with him kind of like
- 5:19Speaker 3: as de facto defensive coordinator. Yeah, and you know, just
- 5:24Speaker 3: kind of went from there and that was my first
- 5:27Speaker 3: actual experience like truly coaching, and then student coach at
- 5:32Speaker 3: the Naval Academy. Yeah, what was the action?
- 5:36Speaker 1: Sorry, so go ahead.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I was just to say. And then the documentary you
- 5:39Speaker 2: kind of you said you go into the coach's office
- 5:40Speaker 2: and you're like, hey, I want to do this, and
- 5:41Speaker 2: like all right, cool, go down, you're you're in. Was
- 5:44Speaker 2: it that simple as far as being having a student coach?
- 5:46Speaker 3: So I got my foot in the door doing uh
- 5:48Speaker 3: just video you know, like the you know, film and
- 5:51Speaker 3: practice and all that games. And so that was freshman
- 5:55Speaker 3: year and then spring going into sophomore year, I mean,
- 6:01Speaker 3: I was always at the football facilities, and the director
- 6:06Speaker 3: of Football Apps just asked, you know, hey, you're here
- 6:09Speaker 3: all the time. You want to you want to come
- 6:10Speaker 3: upstairs and help out. So for about a week or
- 6:12Speaker 3: two I was helping out with operations. And then I mean,
- 6:18Speaker 3: I was like eighteenth at the time, didn't know any better.
- 6:20Speaker 3: I just walked right into the head coach's office. So, hey,
- 6:22Speaker 3: coach Niam He hey Connor. I didn't even know he
- 6:26Speaker 3: knew my name. Yeah, and he's awesome, one of the
- 6:29Speaker 3: best people I've ever met. And I go, hey, coach,
- 6:33Speaker 3: could I a student coach? And he think he stands up,
- 6:38Speaker 3: he thinks about it, and he goes up follow me,
- 6:40Speaker 3: brings me right into Coach Shasper, the offensive coordinator's office,
- 6:44Speaker 3: and said, hey, coach, here's your new student coach. Oh.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Thanks, that's it, and then just ran with it from the.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Random any responsibility I had just treated it in my
- 6:57Speaker 3: mind like I'm the head coach of Michigan right. Like
- 7:00Speaker 3: it's like a psychology, you know, psychological thing where you know,
- 7:03Speaker 3: you know, it's vision, like you when you visualize, you
- 7:06Speaker 3: are what you're trying to be. Then you convince your
- 7:09Speaker 3: brain that you are right, and then all your habits
- 7:11Speaker 3: are like that. So everything I did, I mean, the
- 7:15Speaker 3: first thing I did at Michigan, you know, kind of
- 7:17Speaker 3: skipping ahead here, but the first thing, the first assignment
- 7:20Speaker 3: I had at Michigan was doing a wind report special teams.
- 7:24Speaker 3: Every stadium, you know, every stadium we play in, we
- 7:27Speaker 3: need a wind report. Yeah, I say, okay, do you
- 7:30Speaker 3: have like a templative one. It's yeah, I don't know,
- 7:33Speaker 3: I don't know where we would. I've seen one before,
- 7:36Speaker 3: but you know, just kind of, you know, start it
- 7:39Speaker 3: and then I'll kind of redirect you if it's, you know,
- 7:42Speaker 3: not what we're thinking. So all right, So I just
- 7:45Speaker 3: became like a weatherman for a month. You're thinking of
- 7:48Speaker 3: five days, probably about five days. And I give him
- 7:51Speaker 3: this like eighteen page packet and it had like every kickoff,
- 7:55Speaker 3: where it landed, and what the wind was that day,
- 7:59Speaker 3: and every stadium and they played in that year, and
- 8:02Speaker 3: I think they were like, what the heck is this?
- 8:05Speaker 2: Like what have we got here?
- 8:07Speaker 1: He's like, I'm gonna be the best goddamn weather man
- 8:08Speaker 1: they've ever seen it, ever say, And.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Then it was the next task, whatever it was. You know,
- 8:12Speaker 3: just I'm going to be the best at whatever it is.
- 8:15Speaker 2: There's the epitome of giving one hundred and at all times.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely. When when did it start to like you're
- 8:22Speaker 1: at the Naval Academy. When did you start to like,
- 8:26Speaker 1: how did you create your first opportunity outside of the
- 8:29Speaker 1: Naval Academy.
- 8:30Speaker 3: So sophomore year, spring break, I go to I go
- 8:38Speaker 3: back home to Michigan and Coach Arba just got the
- 8:41Speaker 3: job and they're doing this coaches clinic and Coach Parchers
- 8:45Speaker 3: at the time was the recruiting coordinator, so he ran
- 8:48Speaker 3: the clinic and I went with some of my high
- 8:51Speaker 3: school coaches and my dad. I think, like Mike Martz
- 8:55Speaker 3: or someone big was speaking, so all eyes are on him.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And Mike Mike Martin, he's like the he was like
- 9:01Speaker 1: a head coach for the Rams.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Yeah, so he was speaking, all eyes are on him.
- 9:07Speaker 3: But I'm just trying to get my foot in the door.
- 9:10Speaker 3: So I go down and talk to Coach Partridge and
- 9:13Speaker 3: basically it was like, you know, hey, I'm here for
- 9:15Speaker 3: a week. This was like Friday night or Saturday morning,
- 9:19Speaker 3: like spring break just started, right, So you get the
- 9:20Speaker 3: next nine days or whatever. And so I go and
- 9:23Speaker 3: introduce myself and tell him, Hey, I'm here on spring break.
- 9:26Speaker 3: I'm here for the week. I'd love to help out,
- 9:28Speaker 3: you know, told him my name dropped a couple of
- 9:30Speaker 3: people that I knew. He knew at Navies as a
- 9:31Speaker 3: student coach with them, and you know, he probably thought, one,
- 9:34Speaker 3: why the heck are you and ann Arbor on spring break? Yeah,
- 9:36Speaker 3: and then too, you know, Military Naval Academy student coaching. Okay,
- 9:41Speaker 3: we'll find something for you to do. And yeah, I
- 9:45Speaker 3: just ran with it from there. And I think the
- 9:47Speaker 3: wind report was that off season that was like the
- 9:49Speaker 3: first in my mind, big project I had or whatever.
- 9:52Speaker 3: And is there was there?
- 9:54Speaker 1: Something? Was there? Something too? Leaving after your sophomore year,
- 9:58Speaker 1: you know what I mean, because you're obviously taking a
- 10:00Speaker 1: you're taking a chance going and diving into this next
- 10:02Speaker 1: opportunity with Michigan.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Well, I was doing both. So I was. I was
- 10:06Speaker 3: a student at Navy. I did my four years at
- 10:09Speaker 3: the Naval CAPA, and then my fifth year I was
- 10:11Speaker 3: a temporary assigned duty. It's like a grad assistant with
- 10:14Speaker 3: the football team because I don't have a post grad school,
- 10:16Speaker 3: right so I student coach. So I wasn't at every
- 10:22Speaker 3: single Michigan game. Yeah, during my four years at Navy,
- 10:25Speaker 3: because I was at every Navy game. Okay, we had
- 10:27Speaker 3: a bye week or spring break or in the summer
- 10:29Speaker 3: and I had time to go home or whatever. That's
- 10:31Speaker 3: when I would help out. And then when I got
- 10:34Speaker 3: so I graduated in seventeen, go to you know, so
- 10:39Speaker 3: now I'm a Marine Corps officer, do maybe five or
- 10:43Speaker 3: six months as like a GA with the Navy football team,
- 10:46Speaker 3: and then I go do my Marine Corps training and
- 10:49Speaker 3: thing gas station in California. At that point when I'm
- 10:51Speaker 3: no longer with Navy football, that's when I was then
- 10:55Speaker 3: flying back and forth helping out Michigan. And then I
- 10:59Speaker 3: was at pretty much every game. So that started in
- 11:01Speaker 3: like twenty eighteen, and.
- 11:02Speaker 2: You were helping the coaching staff. Yeah during that time
- 11:05Speaker 2: as well.
- 11:05Speaker 3: So it started when I was at Camp La June
- 11:09Speaker 3: in North Carolina for a few months training and then
- 11:14Speaker 3: stationed in California. So you know, they kind of touched
- 11:17Speaker 3: down in the documentary. I would when I was in California,
- 11:21Speaker 3: I would live, well, I started, I started sleeping on
- 11:25Speaker 3: my couch and I rented out all the rooms in
- 11:28Speaker 3: my house to make money and you know, save money
- 11:34Speaker 3: to fly back and forth and all that. And and
- 11:36Speaker 3: then I realized, well, I lived like fifty five minutes
- 11:39Speaker 3: north of Camp Pendleton, So why am I driving back
- 11:44Speaker 3: and forth just to sleep on my couch. I'm just
- 11:47Speaker 3: going to sleep in my car. So I slept at
- 11:50Speaker 3: the I five South rest stop right outside Camp Pendleton
- 11:55Speaker 3: every day for like two years.
- 11:56Speaker 1: No shit, yep, every day to.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Save two hours, like an hour driving north, an hour
- 12:01Speaker 3: driving south.
- 12:02Speaker 1: That's gas, that's everything.
- 12:04Speaker 3: You're saving money, you're saving time. So that's two more
- 12:06Speaker 3: hours of watching film.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Dude, I love it. It's like, yeah, it makes sense.
- 12:13Speaker 1: But at the same time, very very few people are
- 12:16Speaker 1: willing to sacrifice, right, And it's also.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Like people like, oh, he was a such a big
- 12:20Speaker 2: fan of Michigan, like anybody who like wants to be successful, Like,
- 12:23Speaker 2: these are the kind of sacrifices you should make in
- 12:25Speaker 2: the beginning of the game, Yeah, to get these things going. Yeah,
- 12:28Speaker 2: so you're flying, you're flying back and forth.
- 12:29Speaker 3: I'm flying back and forth. So yeah, say I get
- 12:33Speaker 3: back from ann Arbor wherever we're playing, and so yeah,
- 12:38Speaker 3: Sunday night, get back Lax, drive down, pick up my
- 12:42Speaker 3: laundry which I put in over the weekend, and then
- 12:46Speaker 3: drive down, stay at the rest up, wake up, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 3: five am, whatever, workout on base, work, work ends, I'm
- 12:54Speaker 3: watching film, go to the rest, stop sleep, do the
- 12:58Speaker 3: same thing for you know, four day and then Friday
- 13:01Speaker 3: after work, drive up to my house in Orange County,
- 13:05Speaker 3: do my laundry, drive up to Lax. Fly to take
- 13:09Speaker 3: the Red Eyes was always so twenty twenty, twenty nineteen,
- 13:13Speaker 3: and twenty twenty one because COVID, you know, I couldn't
- 13:15Speaker 3: go to games. So twenty nineteen and twenty twenty one,
- 13:18Speaker 3: every single game was off, no sleep, no shit, yeap
- 13:22Speaker 3: took the Red Eye land wherever we are. It's like sometimes,
- 13:25Speaker 3: you know, we'd be playing like Illinois, so I'd have
- 13:26Speaker 3: to fly into Indianapolis, rent a car, drive over to Illinois,
- 13:31Speaker 3: drive back, and then I would hit the Kansas City
- 13:34Speaker 3: Chiefs game on my way back to my boy. Frank
- 13:36Speaker 3: was his first Chiefs and so Frank Clark, Yeah, so
- 13:45Speaker 3: my So at twenty nineteen, we lost Alabama and the
- 13:52Speaker 3: Citrus Bowl, and the season ends and I'm already kind
- 13:57Speaker 3: of going to Chiefs games whenever it's convenient. I'm on
- 14:00Speaker 3: my flight back, and so Michigan football is done now
- 14:03Speaker 3: for the season, and so I'm thinking, like, well, what
- 14:05Speaker 3: do I do with myself right outside the Marine Corps?
- 14:08Speaker 3: What do I do? So I just started breaking down
- 14:10Speaker 3: film for Frank and interesting, Yeah.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Twenty nineteen, you got the right before two teams that
- 14:18Speaker 2: played in the AC Championship that there.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Were two teams that played in the FC Championship that year.
- 14:25Speaker 2: And Frank, first off, that's we're doing good so far.
- 14:31Speaker 1: He texted me, He's like, have this clip ready because
- 14:33Speaker 1: I got a fun story with Taylor for this.
- 14:35Speaker 2: That's the fun story that who You're like, Yeah, You're like,
- 14:38Speaker 2: Frank Clark, hold on, Bill back, let's break this. We're
- 14:41Speaker 2: gonna if we're gonna do this, let's break.
- 14:44Speaker 1: That now one up, time out? Can he say?
- 14:46Speaker 3: What his? You got this? You got okay?
- 14:48Speaker 2: I want to point out that Frank told me at
- 14:51Speaker 2: the b of game I'm gonna get a sack on you.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Right now, it's the fourth quarter of a minute twenty,
- 14:56Speaker 2: we're down by eleven. He has not had a sack.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I don't think he's even had a pressure. So maybe
- 15:00Speaker 2: scouting port wasn't that great. But we'll get into this anyway.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Hate with the half spin. We see it, We handle it. Now,
- 15:07Speaker 2: I want you to pause it. No, no, keep going now, okay,
- 15:12Speaker 2: that is nine yards from the line of scrimmage. We
- 15:19Speaker 2: gotta step up. We gotta step up. We gotta step up,
- 15:22Speaker 2: right right, boys, you gotta step up in the pocket.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Now Chris Jones can't step up, So go ahead.
- 15:28Speaker 1: What was your scotter? So I'm breaking down film. I
- 15:31Speaker 1: want to hear the.
- 15:31Speaker 3: Breaking and it was not as detailed for on you
- 15:37Speaker 3: as it was the next game in the Super Bowl,
- 15:40Speaker 3: But like for example here here is it was very
- 15:45Speaker 3: you know, I only I took one day, right, I'm
- 15:47Speaker 3: still a Marine corps.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Is that skinny important on the Titans?
- 15:52Speaker 3: Or is that that one's on the Titans? The next
- 15:54Speaker 3: one slide right? That is the Super Bowl? That was
- 15:57Speaker 3: way more detailed, And that was like that was really
- 16:01Speaker 3: dialed for that one. I just watched filing. You know,
- 16:04Speaker 3: I got the what's the NFL game pass? Right?
- 16:08Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, the premium twenty two?
- 16:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, this is your this is your work I
- 16:15Speaker 3: do for Frank. Yeah. So so and that's how I
- 16:18Speaker 3: met Frank's agent.
- 16:19Speaker 1: When Tannehill kills her audibles, if he's under center, thirteen
- 16:22Speaker 1: runs to one pass, he's if he's in gun kills
- 16:26Speaker 1: or audibles seven pass to one run.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Yeah, Connor.
- 16:32Speaker 2: The screen. Yeah, text that to me, Connor, that is wild.
- 16:39Speaker 2: So you you're doing this.
- 16:40Speaker 3: The super Bowl one? So so like I I didn't
- 16:43Speaker 3: get into details on your hand placement or foot placement
- 16:46Speaker 3: or anything like that, but for the Super Bowl I did.
- 16:48Speaker 3: And so I'm up in the nosebleeds at the Super
- 16:52Speaker 3: Bowl and I every single play and calling run past
- 16:55Speaker 3: to myself out, they're about the wrong, They're about the past,
- 16:58Speaker 3: and you're you're from section you know, fifty two or
- 17:01Speaker 3: whatever it was. Yeah, and you were.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Oh in the Super Bowl every play, Yeah, you could,
- 17:09Speaker 3: you could tell off the off their hand place. I mean,
- 17:12Speaker 3: did you did you see?
- 17:13Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 17:13Speaker 3: Let me let me uh look at this one. Who
- 17:17Speaker 3: they played in that Super Bowl San France, Sam So
- 17:19Speaker 3: it was uh Joe Staley and Michael Glinchy And like
- 17:25Speaker 3: you can zoom in on that one. It was one
- 17:28Speaker 3: hundred percent get tells. It was one hundred percent tells.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Foot out ninety pass foot in a hundred percent run
- 17:39Speaker 2: Michael Glinchy three point stance fourteen and sixteen run foot in,
- 17:42Speaker 2: five out of five on foot out one all right,
- 17:45Speaker 2: pass fifty percent past three point stance. It's dude, this
- 17:50Speaker 2: is terrifying.
- 17:54Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 17:55Speaker 2: This is hand together, two out of three pass No way.
- 18:00Speaker 2: What was he pull up? Frank Frank Clark's stat line.
- 18:03Speaker 3: So let me let me say this before. I mean,
- 18:04Speaker 3: I already know this. The only person in the history
- 18:07Speaker 3: of football to have the game winning or game ceiling
- 18:11Speaker 3: sack in every single playoff game from Divisional round to
- 18:16Speaker 3: Super Bowl is Frank Clark.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Yeah, this is the coverage sack.
- 18:24Speaker 3: I mean he's got the clutch gene.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean he got paid.
- 18:29Speaker 3: He's a he's a he's a dude.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Joe Staley. When he's in a three point stance, five
- 18:35Speaker 1: out of six were run. If his hands are apart,
- 18:37Speaker 1: fifteen out of sixteen were a run hands together, it
- 18:41Speaker 1: was passed. I mean that's yeah, because a details where
- 18:44Speaker 1: everybody kind of finds our edge within the game. Obviously,
- 18:47Speaker 1: if you're a genetic specimen to go with it, it
- 18:48Speaker 1: makes it that much more difficult.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Dob Okay, So twenty nineteen. Where is the Michigan Manifesto
- 18:53Speaker 2: at this point?
- 18:54Speaker 1: Okay, is it alive?
- 18:55Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 18:56Speaker 1: He so take me. Even last year when when everything
- 19:01Speaker 1: was happening, I was like, hey, there's a manifesto like matter.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I'm sure he knows exactly who talks about him the
- 19:08Speaker 2: entire He's got a manifesto on people that yes.
- 19:14Speaker 3: Uh no, I know exactly how that how that leaked.
- 19:16Speaker 3: I know exactly who leaked it. I'm not I'm not
- 19:18Speaker 3: gonna say who. But when I when I saw and
- 19:21Speaker 3: here's here's how I know. Because the article said something
- 19:25Speaker 3: about six hundred page Michigan Manifesto. Six hundred pages that
- 19:29Speaker 3: was in like twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen.
- 19:32Speaker 1: How big is be?
- 19:33Speaker 3: Thousands by?
- 19:34Speaker 2: Now? Do you have it in like a hard hard copy?
- 19:38Speaker 3: So that's that's the thing, like an old Testament book.
- 19:40Speaker 3: So I have the I have the original like how
- 19:44Speaker 3: it started. So this this is what happened. So okay,
- 19:47Speaker 3: go to the Naval Academy and you know I always
- 19:51Speaker 3: go back to those legendary head coaches, right, they all
- 19:54Speaker 3: have that that one thing in common military. Right, So
- 19:57Speaker 3: my freshman year, I'm like, wow, you know this is
- 20:02Speaker 3: I'm going to learn a lot, a lot, and I
- 20:06Speaker 3: need to have a place to organize everything I learned.
- 20:10Speaker 3: I can't let one little thing slip by. And you
- 20:14Speaker 3: know a lot of people when they take notes, they
- 20:17Speaker 3: take notes whatever, and then it just they just stack notes,
- 20:20Speaker 3: and how do you know where to reference? You know, Oh,
- 20:25Speaker 3: I remember that one thing I read in that book?
- 20:27Speaker 3: What what was that book?
- 20:28Speaker 1: It was about?
- 20:29Speaker 3: Uh? You know, it was about hiring and firing personnel?
- 20:33Speaker 3: What book was it? And then you go through all
- 20:35Speaker 3: your notes and it takes you, you know, two weeks
- 20:37Speaker 3: before you find the quote or whatever it was that
- 20:41Speaker 3: that you're trying to think of, Right, So I used
- 20:47Speaker 3: the military, the way that the military organizes everything as
- 20:51Speaker 3: like my foundation for how I'm going to organize my notes.
- 20:56Speaker 3: And it started off as a binder and then and
- 21:01Speaker 3: that got too big, and then I needed something electronically,
- 21:05Speaker 3: so it went to a Microsoft word document. And then
- 21:08Speaker 3: I realized, well, I need to be able to capture
- 21:12Speaker 3: any thought or any idea at any time. I can
- 21:15Speaker 3: only do a word document if I have my specific laptop.
- 21:19Speaker 3: So then it translated to a Google doc, so now
- 21:21Speaker 3: I can do it for my phone from anywhere. I
- 21:23Speaker 3: can do it from right now. You give me a
- 21:24Speaker 3: great quote, pull out my phone, type it in. It's
- 21:27Speaker 3: in the manifesto. I know exactly where it is. So
- 21:31Speaker 3: any you have, you could right now mention any thought,
- 21:34Speaker 3: any concept of anything, all the way from leadership to
- 21:38Speaker 3: the x's and o's of the game to you know,
- 21:44Speaker 3: equipment at anything, and I'll be able to a quote
- 21:50Speaker 3: or pull something. If you had like, hey, what are
- 21:53Speaker 3: your thoughts on you know, firing personnel. Well, I have
- 21:58Speaker 3: probably fifteen to twenty page there's a notes on that,
- 22:00Speaker 3: and I know exactly where it is, and it's super organized.
- 22:04Speaker 3: It's just notes.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's notes, but it goes into a Google doc.
- 22:07Speaker 2: And then later in the documentary you talk about signs
- 22:09Speaker 2: and all that. When did the manifesto evolve into seeing
- 22:13Speaker 2: these signs and being.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Able to break down You're talking about just deciphering signals
- 22:17Speaker 3: in a game.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Right, it is a manifesto, a part of that or
- 22:19Speaker 2: these two That was just my That was my first
- 22:22Speaker 2: task at Navy.
- 22:24Speaker 1: So your first major task was.
- 22:26Speaker 3: With the naval kate maybe football. So you know, I'm
- 22:29Speaker 3: student coaching now and we're a week from game day
- 22:34Speaker 3: and I'm like, wait, wait, what do I do on
- 22:36Speaker 3: game day? Right? And this this applies to me at
- 22:38Speaker 3: Michigan too, and I started helping out, so like, really,
- 22:40Speaker 3: in twenty nineteen to twenty twenty one, there's no job
- 22:45Speaker 3: description for me because I'm not an employee, right, I'm
- 22:48Speaker 3: just volunteering. I'm a volunteer student coach at Navy. And
- 22:51Speaker 3: then I was a volunteer assistant in Michigan, So there's
- 22:54Speaker 3: no job description. Why would you have a job description
- 22:57Speaker 3: for a role that you don't even have? And then
- 23:00Speaker 3: you know, I just kind of get my foot in
- 23:02Speaker 3: the door and work my way in. So at both
- 23:06Speaker 3: places it started. It started a Navy I just say,
- 23:09Speaker 3: so what do I do on game day? And I
- 23:13Speaker 3: forget who it was, but one of the coaches said, well,
- 23:17Speaker 3: I don't know, let me look into it. But I
- 23:20Speaker 3: remember last year we had a guy he just graduated,
- 23:23Speaker 3: who tried deciphering signals, you know, opponent signals in game
- 23:28Speaker 3: and I knew nothing about it. You know, I never
- 23:30Speaker 3: did that in high school. I don't know, Okay, Okay.
- 23:32Speaker 3: So I went in with a blank sheet of paper,
- 23:35Speaker 3: a clipboard, and a pen. And our first game is
- 23:38Speaker 3: Ohio State, and just started. You know that that was
- 23:43Speaker 3: the birth And they talked about in the documentary one
- 23:46Speaker 3: of my favorite quotes the yeah, I said, well, I
- 23:49Speaker 3: gotta be I am one of the dumber people at
- 23:51Speaker 3: the Naval Academy. I mean I was like the last
- 23:53Speaker 3: person get accepted pretty much, right. Uh, And I strugg
- 23:56Speaker 3: I mean it's very very difficult, very difficult. But I'm like, well,
- 24:02Speaker 3: these are eighteen nineteen twenty year old kids in Columbus,
- 24:06Speaker 3: like I gotta be able to if they if they
- 24:09Speaker 3: know there's signals, I can figure out their signals.
- 24:13Speaker 2: So it's a personal challenge.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Oh, it was like a yeah, and it's Ohio States, right,
- 24:17Speaker 3: you know how long?
- 24:19Speaker 2: How how long in that game did you start to
- 24:21Speaker 2: thine drives? Three drives?
- 24:23Speaker 3: Yep?
- 24:24Speaker 2: Okay, can you break that down for me a little bit.
- 24:26Speaker 3: I mean I don't remember, you know, I don't remember
- 24:27Speaker 3: exactly right, you know the play.
- 24:30Speaker 2: I think they ran it like memory.
- 24:36Speaker 3: It's been a lot of games since then. But I
- 24:40Speaker 3: just remember, you know, both sides of the ball, whatever
- 24:44Speaker 3: I could get, and I just remember getting their offensive
- 24:48Speaker 3: signals pretty early and just not knowing what to do
- 24:52Speaker 3: with the information. So I would just yell it out.
- 24:56Speaker 3: And because you know, there wasn't like a structure, No
- 24:58Speaker 3: one knew who I was. Right, I'm two weeks into
- 25:01Speaker 3: being a student coach, Like they're not. They don't know
- 25:04Speaker 3: who I am. Like the OC knew who I was,
- 25:07Speaker 3: but he's up in the booth, and like the director
- 25:10Speaker 3: of football ops knew who I was. That was pretty
- 25:12Speaker 3: much it in the players. But so I'm just yelling
- 25:16Speaker 3: like power Left, power Left, you know who's this? It'd
- 25:21Speaker 3: be power left and the next player, you know whatever
- 25:24Speaker 3: it was, and it's you know, you just gotta have
- 25:28Speaker 3: a kN act for it. But it's it's not rocket science,
- 25:30Speaker 3: it's signals.
- 25:32Speaker 1: But still you're you're in such a spot to where
- 25:34Speaker 1: again you don't have like a job title, you don't
- 25:36Speaker 1: have a description, like you're in such a militant law
- 25:41Speaker 1: of attraction success like I'm going to provide as much
- 25:44Speaker 1: value as I possibly can so that way they can't
- 25:46Speaker 1: ignore me. Yes, and then you when when's the when's this?
- 25:51Speaker 1: When is the point to where it starts to turn
- 25:52Speaker 1: to where you're now becoming a valuable asset that they're
- 25:55Speaker 1: leaning on just in your just in your own role.
- 25:59Speaker 1: You know what I mean, it's like, Okay, you're doing
- 26:00Speaker 1: the weather, then you're getting whatever. The next thing is
- 26:06Speaker 1: either one either one.
- 26:07Speaker 2: They maybe maybe ever recognize you for like, hey, this
- 26:10Speaker 2: guy's really picking up signals, he's understanding this really gives
- 26:13Speaker 2: us an edge.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Well, well yeah, because they had a breakdown, right Yeah,
- 26:17Speaker 3: it's it's it's you know what I say this too,
- 26:19Speaker 3: Like even at Michigan this last year before I was suspended, UH,
- 26:26Speaker 3: signals was like ten to fifteen percent of my job,
- 26:30Speaker 3: you know what I mean, Like, it's that's just one
- 26:34Speaker 3: responsibility that I did. H You're still you know, breaking
- 26:39Speaker 3: down film, getting formation tendencies, you know, stuff like stuff
- 26:42Speaker 3: like that, right Frank, Yeah, And I mean there's a
- 26:48Speaker 3: I'm gonna skip ahead right now. It's on my mind.
- 26:51Speaker 3: The best team to ever protect their signals was East
- 26:54Speaker 3: Carolina last year, first game, and they I'm not going
- 27:03Speaker 3: to get into details on exactly what they did to
- 27:06Speaker 3: protect because I don't want to out them. Right now,
- 27:08Speaker 3: they're probably still using it because it's pretty legit. But
- 27:11Speaker 3: it took me two and a half quarters to figure
- 27:13Speaker 3: out which signaler was live. That's the longest it's ever
- 27:17Speaker 3: taken me.
- 27:17Speaker 1: Really, Yep.
- 27:18Speaker 3: And it was week one, so it's brand new signals, right,
- 27:22Speaker 3: So I pretty much go into the blank Street paper
- 27:24Speaker 3: and I had a good idea of how to tell
- 27:27Speaker 3: who's live, but they like flipped it from the year before.
- 27:30Speaker 3: And I also did one of the formation breakdowns for
- 27:37Speaker 3: our defense, so I knew, for example, every time it's
- 27:41Speaker 3: two by two four removed, so no tight end in
- 27:43Speaker 3: the core, and their only run out of that formation
- 27:49Speaker 3: was quarterback draw. And I'm fast forward, like the fourth
- 27:52Speaker 3: quarter right now, we're up thirty to nothing, and I'm
- 27:56Speaker 3: watching there. I now know who's live, and I see
- 28:00Speaker 3: him signal the two by two formation, and then I
- 28:04Speaker 3: see one signal. It was like alpha with his hand.
- 28:08Speaker 3: And usually, I mean, you guys understand play calls, right.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Like soord association.
- 28:15Speaker 3: So if there's a formation and then one word, chances
- 28:20Speaker 3: are it's not a pass, right because you have a
- 28:23Speaker 3: pass pass protection and then the concept yeah right, And like.
- 28:26Speaker 1: If a huddle breaks really quickly, you're like, okay, it's
- 28:29Speaker 1: probably run here. But if the quarterbacks in there looking
- 28:31Speaker 1: around anywhere else, You're like, all.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Right, he's tagging receivers and all that. And then also
- 28:37Speaker 3: a lot of runs still have some tags to it, right,
- 28:41Speaker 3: so only one word. I'm thinking drawer screen, so and
- 28:47Speaker 3: then this all goes on. This goes on in my
- 28:50Speaker 3: head in like a second, right, So I see the
- 28:53Speaker 3: two by two like doubles formation, whatever you want to
- 28:55Speaker 3: call it, and then I see one signal. I'm thinking
- 28:58Speaker 3: that's got to be drawers. I would think it was
- 29:01Speaker 3: second in I think it was like second and five
- 29:03Speaker 3: and it was two minutes, so but in my mind,
- 29:06Speaker 3: I'm like, this isn't really a draw situation. But then
- 29:10Speaker 3: I also remembered twenty nineteen Penn State, same signal was
- 29:15Speaker 3: their quarterback draw and that's the only time I've ever
- 29:18Speaker 3: seen that signal, and I remember the breakdown. I did
- 29:21Speaker 3: quarterback draw out of that formation, so I think you
- 29:24Speaker 3: can see it because coach Mentor was the interim head
- 29:26Speaker 3: coach that game, and they happen to be showing him
- 29:28Speaker 3: and I'm like behind him, I'm like, I think this
- 29:29Speaker 3: is draw, and so we're yelling draw, draw, draw, which
- 29:33Speaker 3: is one of the worst feelings when you say I
- 29:35Speaker 3: think it's something and then everyone yeah. I'm like, oh god,
- 29:37Speaker 3: this better be yeah, you better hit yeah, And it
- 29:41Speaker 3: was a draw, but they I mean, they still converted
- 29:43Speaker 3: it first down. But it's just like, that's how many
- 29:46Speaker 3: things have to go into it, right, Like, it's not
- 29:48Speaker 3: just like look at the signal. It's not this like
- 29:49Speaker 3: black and white thing. A lot of times I'm kinda yeah,
- 29:53Speaker 3: I think this is what it is. And you know,
- 29:58Speaker 3: so kind of how it works on game day is
- 30:02Speaker 3: in my mind, I have a threshold where if I
- 30:06Speaker 3: am not ninety five percent certain, I'm not saying a
- 30:09Speaker 3: word and I got to take a step back for this.
- 30:12Speaker 3: All that makes sense. So in college football, all right,
- 30:18Speaker 3: we're gonna get into some really good details here.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Let's go. I'm so excited.
- 30:22Speaker 3: So college football, the culture has always been to go
- 30:30Speaker 3: up tempo ever since the mid two thousands. Right, you
- 30:33Speaker 3: don't see many teams at huddle. NFL the culture is
- 30:37Speaker 3: obviously to huddle. And I'm gonna kind of mix last
- 30:42Speaker 3: year to present day now because of the whole new
- 30:44Speaker 3: Quarterback COM's rule, and everyone assumes that, oh, signaling is over.
- 30:49Speaker 3: Signaling is picked up now. And to understand that, you
- 30:54Speaker 3: have to understand the history of signals. You know, just
- 30:59Speaker 3: how works, and the reason signals exist is because of
- 31:04Speaker 3: up tempo. It's not because there's no quarterback comes. It's
- 31:07Speaker 3: because offenses like to go up tempo. Right. I have
- 31:11Speaker 3: not watched a disclaimer, I have not watched Ole Miss
- 31:13Speaker 3: in Tennessee all that much this year, but I would
- 31:17Speaker 3: assume they're still going up tempo. I don't see a
- 31:21Speaker 3: world in which all these teams that are like snapping
- 31:23Speaker 3: the ball with thirty seconds up in the play clock
- 31:26Speaker 3: are huddling all because they have coach to quarterback comes now.
- 31:31Speaker 3: So they're going up tempo, which forces the defense to signal. Right,
- 31:37Speaker 3: you can't huddle as a defense if the offense is
- 31:39Speaker 3: spread out right, they'll just snap and throw it over
- 31:41Speaker 3: your head if you're in a huddle. So signaling will
- 31:46Speaker 3: always exist as much as offensive coordinators want it to
- 31:49Speaker 3: want it to exist. And signals stealing has been more
- 31:54Speaker 3: prevalent with offenses stealing defensive signals. So going back to
- 32:01Speaker 3: twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen with Michigan, our defense was getting
- 32:06Speaker 3: our signal stolen left and right, teams like Ohio State,
- 32:10Speaker 3: Penn State, Indiana, so on, pretty much the whole, the
- 32:14Speaker 3: whole big tent. Probably Nebraska, Yeah, probably, I mean, yeah,
- 32:18Speaker 3: you're you're not You're not wrong.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Because it's everyone sim simplicity.
- 32:22Speaker 3: That's like Iowa and Michigan State is everyone else State
- 32:26Speaker 3: wasn't stealing. I don't think so, because they were the
- 32:28Speaker 3: worst of protecting.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I was just going to say, for simplicity, for
- 32:32Speaker 2: you to say that about Michigan State, you're saying that
- 32:34Speaker 2: the worst of protecting.
- 32:35Speaker 3: If you are bad at protecting, you're probably not stealing.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Right Like if you if you're good with stealing, you
- 32:42Speaker 3: know what it takes to protect. So the teams that
- 32:45Speaker 3: were really good at protecting you, well you can also
- 32:48Speaker 3: look they got a guy just like me. Right, they
- 32:50Speaker 3: just they didn't the media didn't go crazy about their guys, right,
- 32:55Speaker 3: But everyone has a guy.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Everyone has a Connor. Yeah, some things have multiple Connors,
- 33:01Speaker 2: Oh a lot. We'll definitely get into that. Let's keep
- 33:04Speaker 2: let's keep breaking. That is obviously a huge thing.
- 33:06Speaker 3: So we're getting our signal stolen left and right.
- 33:10Speaker 1: And that's because of the tempo you guys are facing.
- 33:12Speaker 1: And it's just simply.
- 33:13Speaker 3: Because you know, and just football in general, right, Like
- 33:17Speaker 3: whether it's covering up issues as a play caller or
- 33:22Speaker 3: personnel issues, whatever it is, you can always utilize and
- 33:27Speaker 3: manipulate tempo to give you an advantage right to regain
- 33:31Speaker 3: that advantage, right, And a lot of times, especially in
- 33:35Speaker 3: a world where everyone's signaling, you can even force the
- 33:38Speaker 3: defense to signal before you signal. Maybe not force, right,
- 33:43Speaker 3: because at the end of the day, if you know
- 33:44Speaker 3: what's going on, it's it's just a cat and mouse game.
- 33:47Speaker 3: You just wait until they signal and just calling out
- 33:50Speaker 3: on their bluff.
- 33:51Speaker 1: And just to your defense too, like if a being
- 33:53Speaker 1: a defender, if an offense is tempoing you, the coordinator
- 33:56Speaker 1: will kind of tell you before the game, Hey, if
- 33:57Speaker 1: they start tempoing us, there'll only be like two or
- 33:59Speaker 1: three halls that they go to correct. So you're almost
- 34:01Speaker 1: understanding the tendency before it happens.
- 34:03Speaker 3: But also, uh, you know they can tempo and then
- 34:07Speaker 3: hard count m right, so just to get whatever you're in.
- 34:11Speaker 3: Maybe you showed blitz or maybe you showed your safety shell,
- 34:14Speaker 3: or you showed too high, whatever it is, right, they
- 34:17Speaker 3: you know, they get to the line quick and they
- 34:20Speaker 3: get you to kind of tell real quick, and then
- 34:23Speaker 3: they call their play and they expose it. Right. They
- 34:25Speaker 3: oh they cover four, let's call cover four beater. Oh, hey,
- 34:28Speaker 3: they're bringing the nickel, they're dropping the buck. Let's let's
- 34:31Speaker 3: throw a slant, you know, to the slot right away. Yeah,
- 34:33Speaker 3: whatever it is. And so yeah, that was happening to us.
- 34:38Speaker 3: And so in twenty twenty one, the big change was
- 34:43Speaker 3: So when coach McDonald got the job, he asked, he said, hey,
- 34:47Speaker 3: you know, he's new, he's been in the NFL, coming
- 34:50Speaker 3: back to college and he goes, hey, you know, what's
- 34:53Speaker 3: how do we protect our signals? And I told him,
- 34:56Speaker 3: I said, well, it's a cat and mouse game. You
- 34:59Speaker 3: got to think of it like it's red light green light.
- 35:01Speaker 3: If if if I'm watching them signal and I am
- 35:05Speaker 3: not talking, that means they have not signaled, So don't signal,
- 35:09Speaker 3: because then we're the mouse. You just have to wait
- 35:12Speaker 3: for them to begin signaling. So, you know, and it's
- 35:15Speaker 3: not the sexy thing everyone wants to hear, but ninety
- 35:19Speaker 3: nine times out of one hundred, they already know what
- 35:22Speaker 3: they're calling no matter what. They just want to have
- 35:25Speaker 3: the green light to call it so their signal doesn't
- 35:27Speaker 3: get stolen. Right, So usually in game, I'm I'm looking,
- 35:34Speaker 3: I'm looking, I'm looking, and if I say, like, hey, trips,
- 35:36Speaker 3: why flex? You know the formation maybe I say, like
- 35:39Speaker 3: why across to trips? Why flex? Which here's usual signals
- 35:43Speaker 3: for like why across? Like why across trips? Why?
- 35:48Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 35:49Speaker 2: You know, like.
- 35:50Speaker 3: It's anyone could could see that and just say this
- 35:53Speaker 3: is this is what the formation is. Usually he's calling
- 35:56Speaker 3: the play just like that, right, So it's not like
- 35:58Speaker 3: it's not like the coordinator was waiting for like, hey,
- 36:02Speaker 3: is it going to be a run? Is it going
- 36:03Speaker 3: to be a pass? Is? It's more like these Mike
- 36:06Speaker 3: McDonald is a very successful college football coach and now
- 36:11Speaker 3: NFL head coach, Right, Jesse Mentor, is what are the
- 36:16Speaker 3: Chargers are giving up the fewest points in the NFL? Right?
- 36:18Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 36:18Speaker 3: Right, So these guys get paid to do what they do.
- 36:21Speaker 3: They're not listening, They're not like calling their defense waiting
- 36:26Speaker 3: for me. I'm just a green light to basically tell then, hey,
- 36:30Speaker 3: you have permission to signal without getting stolen. And that
- 36:34Speaker 3: that is kind of where it picked up in twenty one,
- 36:37Speaker 3: where we were now no longer the mouse. It was
- 36:39Speaker 3: all even playing field essentially, and what teams will do though,
- 36:45Speaker 3: like Ohio State and I got a whole we might
- 36:48Speaker 3: I got a whole breakdown on every single play from
- 36:53Speaker 3: twenty eighteen to present day Michigan Ohio State.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Yeah, now, from twenty eighteen to present day, a whole
- 37:02Speaker 2: breakdown of Ohio States.
- 37:03Speaker 3: When when Ohio State's on offense and we're on defense,
- 37:05Speaker 3: and I category I watched every play on film and
- 37:10Speaker 3: I categorized it, who's the mouse, who's the cat? And
- 37:14Speaker 3: then sometimes it's just neutral the wash yut yep, and
- 37:20Speaker 3: here we go. So in twenty eighteen, Ohio State was
- 37:23Speaker 3: the cat every play because they're they're picking us apart
- 37:26Speaker 3: signal wise, right, and yeah, they're running mess every time
- 37:29Speaker 3: we're in cover one, they're running meshrail every time we're
- 37:34Speaker 3: blitz in. They happened being max protection. Take a shot
- 37:37Speaker 3: every time we're in zone, they run the ball, right,
- 37:40Speaker 3: I mean, it's not a coincidence. I'm watching them. They
- 37:43Speaker 3: have their me in, you know, Ryan Daysier, and we signal,
- 37:49Speaker 3: they talk. I see it, we talk, but we signaled first,
- 37:52Speaker 3: so we're the mouse, right, and and then so that
- 37:56Speaker 3: happened in twenty eighteen twenty nineteen, so they were the
- 37:59Speaker 3: cat every play those two games. They averaged eight eight
- 38:06Speaker 3: point one five yards per play in twenty eighteen and
- 38:09Speaker 3: eight Yards were playing twenty nineteen and they had fifteen
- 38:11Speaker 3: touchdowns in those two games. Okay, twenty one they were
- 38:18Speaker 3: it was a stalemate seventy two times. Okay, so that's
- 38:23Speaker 3: like they're signaling, and then we start to signal right
- 38:26Speaker 3: after they start to signal. Okay, they were the cat
- 38:30Speaker 3: three times. And here's how I categorized them being the
- 38:35Speaker 3: cat when they had a play called. So it starts
- 38:39Speaker 3: off as a stalemate, and then Ryan Day gets CJ.
- 38:44Speaker 3: Stroud's attention last second because he sees what we're in.
- 38:48Speaker 3: Maybe they got our signal, maybe they see our show,
- 38:50Speaker 3: whatever it is, and they changed the play right before
- 38:53Speaker 3: the snap. Okay, that's them being the cat, so our
- 38:56Speaker 3: signals they spoke last yep, and then they were the
- 39:00Speaker 3: mouse every time they hard counted that game. Here's why.
- 39:06Speaker 3: In twenty eighteen and twenty nineteen, every time they hard
- 39:09Speaker 3: counted and then looked at the sideline, we already had
- 39:11Speaker 3: our signal called and we never changed it. So I
- 39:16Speaker 3: mean they they.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Exposed right right right, so they know the zone.
- 39:19Speaker 3: Man twenty twenty one, I know their hard count signal,
- 39:23Speaker 3: so I know when they're going to hard count, so
- 39:26Speaker 3: we don't have to show a blitzer or whatnot. They
- 39:28Speaker 3: stole our they stole the wrong signal because we would
- 39:31Speaker 3: change our call.
- 39:34Speaker 2: And do you know who Ryan days Connor Stallions is.
- 39:38Speaker 3: Yeah, but I'm not gonna out of here.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Yeah you should as you should have.
- 39:40Speaker 1: But we know he's there.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Is he good at his job?
- 39:43Speaker 3: Yes, very Yeah. So when they were the mouse, actually
- 39:48Speaker 3: i'll start with when they're the cat. When they were
- 39:50Speaker 3: the cat, so they they changed the play late three times,
- 39:53Speaker 3: they averaged nine point three yards per play. When it
- 39:56Speaker 3: was a stalemate, they averaged five point three yards per play.
- 39:59Speaker 3: They did score three touchdowns. It's seventy two plays, so
- 40:01Speaker 3: that's the majority of the game. Right. When they were
- 40:03Speaker 3: the mouse, they only averaged four yards per play six times,
- 40:09Speaker 3: and usually.
- 40:09Speaker 2: There were seventy two total plays or they were.
- 40:11Speaker 3: Seventy there the stalemate, so it was eighty one total plays.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Gotcha.
- 40:16Speaker 3: And yeah, you see, when they're the cat, they averaged
- 40:19Speaker 3: the most yards per play all the way down. When
- 40:20Speaker 3: they're the mouse, it's they're not they're not doing much.
- 40:24Speaker 3: So their first the twenty eighteen and twenty nineteen they
- 40:29Speaker 3: hard counted forty times. You can go back and watch
- 40:32Speaker 3: the film, they hard counted forty times twenty twenty one
- 40:35Speaker 3: six because it wasn't working right, because they couldn't steal
- 40:40Speaker 3: our signal when they hard counted, because we just basically
- 40:43Speaker 3: played this cat and mouse game with them and didn't
- 40:46Speaker 3: allow them to to be the mouse or to be
- 40:48Speaker 3: the cat every time.
- 40:49Speaker 2: When you're explaining this cat and mouse game to the coaches,
- 40:52Speaker 2: how receptive were they to, Hey, you got.
- 40:54Speaker 3: A very Mike McDonald is amazing.
- 40:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:57Speaker 3: I mean he's one of the smartest people I've been around,
- 41:02Speaker 3: and elite coach. Right. He also empowered everyone. He's a
- 41:07Speaker 3: great leader and he would listen. So, I mean, it
- 41:13Speaker 3: couldn't have been any better having him there. He was.
- 41:18Speaker 3: It was huge.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's huge.
- 41:20Speaker 3: Is so basically he just you know, hey, I'm the DC.
- 41:25Speaker 3: I want to call the plays and focus on that.
- 41:27Speaker 3: I don't want to get my signal stolen. Can you
- 41:29Speaker 3: help me? Yeah, just you know, wait till it's a
- 41:32Speaker 3: green light. Okay, thanks.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Outside of the signal stuff, what situations were you in
- 41:38Speaker 1: charge of breaking down?
- 41:39Speaker 3: Well, in twenty one I was still in the Marine Corps.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Okay, so I was That's when.
- 41:42Speaker 3: I was flying back and forth. So I mean I
- 41:46Speaker 3: just showed up on game day and helped out twenty
- 41:49Speaker 3: two when I get hired, you know, recruiting and then
- 41:53Speaker 3: recruiting signals and and then involved into helping out with
- 41:57Speaker 3: the linebackers. Okay, nice formation breakdowns.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I'm so fascinated, Like this is incredible.
- 42:06Speaker 3: Yeah, And if you want me to keep going this
- 42:08Speaker 3: Ohio State thing. They weren't the cat one play in
- 42:10Speaker 3: twenty twenty two in Columbus, and they averaged six yards
- 42:16Speaker 3: per play, and then when they stole the wrong signal
- 42:18Speaker 3: because they hard counted, uh, they averaged five yards per play.
- 42:23Speaker 3: They scored one touchdown each in those situations. But it's funny.
- 42:28Speaker 3: There's a there's a video someone sent me of It's
- 42:32Speaker 3: like me by coach Minter twenty twenty two in Columbus
- 42:36Speaker 3: and some guy like is doing this breakdown. Sam, I'm saying,
- 42:39Speaker 3: run right, run right?
- 42:41Speaker 1: Oh you talk about where all even players just ran.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Do we have that clip that.
- 42:47Speaker 3: It wasn't even like, First of all, I'm saying Nike,
- 42:52Speaker 3: because that's what we called an opponent's hard count Nike.
- 42:55Speaker 3: And you can see the Nike board go up behind me.
- 42:58Speaker 3: We have a board in Nike basically tom on our
- 43:00Speaker 3: you know, safeties like don't show a shell. They're trying
- 43:02Speaker 3: to steal our signal right now, right, and be ready
- 43:05Speaker 3: for us to change the call. So if they look,
- 43:07Speaker 3: we're going to change our call to make make sure
- 43:09Speaker 3: they stole the wrong.
- 43:10Speaker 1: This is the clip what we're talking about right here.
- 43:12Speaker 3: No, that was after one of their herd counts. You
- 43:18Speaker 3: see heart counts right there.
- 43:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and then Nike signed behind it.
- 43:22Speaker 3: We had the Nike sign right, But there's a different
- 43:24Speaker 3: one where like some guy does this breakdown and like
- 43:26Speaker 3: he's trying to like read my lips and he says,
- 43:28Speaker 3: he's saying, run right, run right, that's what he's saying.
- 43:30Speaker 3: I'm saying, but I'm saying Nike, Nike. And by the way,
- 43:35Speaker 3: the run was to the left, because it's from the
- 43:37Speaker 3: defense's perspective, right, Like, I'm not gonna say it's a
- 43:40Speaker 3: run of the right when they run it to our left.
- 43:44Speaker 3: But yes, so I say Nike, and then you can
- 43:49Speaker 3: see them hard count. Look, they just stole whatever we
- 43:54Speaker 3: just signaled and then changed video.
- 43:56Speaker 1: In the group chat.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll pull that up for sure, because there's you
- 44:01Speaker 2: see so many of these clips and videos of you
- 44:04Speaker 2: and you're saying something to somebody and everyone wants to
- 44:06Speaker 2: freak out.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Over it out. But while I'm actually protecting our signals.
- 44:11Speaker 3: That's the whole point of what I was saying. I'm
- 44:14Speaker 3: telling our coordinator, they are hard counting, call a play.
- 44:19Speaker 3: You don't want to call because they're gonna they're trying
- 44:21Speaker 3: to steal our signal.
- 44:22Speaker 2: So this is the clip right here. Yeah, they're saying Nike, Nike.
- 44:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you can see me say twin, why Twin why Nike?
- 44:30Speaker 3: And there goes the Nike board. You saw it go up. Yeah,
- 44:33Speaker 3: and you see Ohio State hard count. So now they're
- 44:38Speaker 3: all looking at the sideline. Now they're signaling, and then
- 44:43Speaker 3: we call our other play. So they just stole the
- 44:45Speaker 3: wrong signal and it goes for no yards.
- 44:48Speaker 1: Everybody they're feasting breakdown the U. There's just tight end screen.
- 44:54Speaker 3: Ah.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to say the Houston text heat stover. Yeah,
- 44:59Speaker 1: And he said essentially like it's a formation we've never
- 45:03Speaker 1: done it out of, we've never ran this play out of,
- 45:07Speaker 1: And he was beside himself on figuring out how you
- 45:11Speaker 1: guys need that. Yeah, insane, incredible awareness by the defense
- 45:17Speaker 1: and understanding that it was a screened.
- 45:21Speaker 2: Guys just in the film room.
- 45:24Speaker 3: Uh so, I don't remember what formation it was out of.
- 45:29Speaker 2: But can we pull that clip up before you explain it?
- 45:32Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 45:33Speaker 2: Yeah, just scroll up.
- 45:35Speaker 4: That one right there.
- 45:41Speaker 1: Do they show the play?
- 45:42Speaker 3: No, they don't. We could. We could pull it up.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Yeah, see yeah, try to. Yeah, I'm thinking about it.
- 45:52Speaker 3: I had to be first half, first quarter because they're
- 45:55Speaker 3: going the same direction around the twenty five thirty yard
- 46:04Speaker 3: line somewhere in there. Who was right in front of us?
- 46:08Speaker 1: It was into the boundary in front of you.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Yes, correct, we're getting to. You called this play that
- 46:13Speaker 2: they had not run before, but you were able to
- 46:15Speaker 2: decipher it. Is this one of your top five calls?
- 46:19Speaker 3: Is this like? Is this like a top fired? Though?
- 46:21Speaker 3: It backfired?
- 46:22Speaker 1: They get c J.
- 46:23Speaker 3: Stroud turned around and everyone was right there, and he
- 46:25Speaker 3: scrambled and got it first down or at least got
- 46:28Speaker 3: significant yards. Frank's facetiming me right now.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Twenty two He answer it, dude.
- 46:38Speaker 2: Frank was a war daddy at Michigan.
- 46:40Speaker 3: Frank, we're on the bus right now.
- 46:44Speaker 1: Frank, what's baby?
- 46:48Speaker 2: What are you doing?
- 46:52Speaker 1: What are you going to take house for?
- 46:53Speaker 2: What you doing.
- 46:59Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Well, I hope you're doing well, brother.
- 47:04Speaker 3: Yeh jump after yeah, say all that's funny. I already
- 47:11Speaker 3: gave him the shout out.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt.
- 47:15Speaker 3: That tight end screen. Yes whatever the formation said. You know,
- 47:20Speaker 3: here's the thing. They Ohio State had like eight signalers
- 47:23Speaker 3: eight signalers all year something like that, and everyone signals
- 47:27Speaker 3: the formation. Mistake number one, Like, I don't need to
- 47:33Speaker 3: know who's live to see what the formation is, right,
- 47:35Speaker 3: anyone can see that.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Uh.
- 47:38Speaker 3: Mistake number two. They never changed who their live signaler
- 47:41Speaker 3: was the entire season.
- 47:44Speaker 2: So I guess their condor stallions. Isn't that good? Then?
- 47:48Speaker 3: Apparently not as good.
- 47:49Speaker 1: They didn't do it. They didn't do no self scouting correct.
- 47:55Speaker 3: So so, and here's here's the bottom line of you know,
- 48:01Speaker 3: how how can you be so good in game? I
- 48:04Speaker 3: just realized this is the clip right here? Yep, that's it?
- 48:10Speaker 3: Slot why? Why? So? I think they motioned into slot
- 48:14Speaker 3: y why?
- 48:14Speaker 2: And then also that's a cup block. You see a
- 48:18Speaker 2: cup by the pressure it's penalty.
- 48:27Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the signal signal for the slot YY formation.
- 48:34Speaker 3: And and then the guy who was live the entire
- 48:37Speaker 3: season signaled why delay. Am I supposed to see that
- 48:46Speaker 3: and be like, oh, I don't know what this.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Is, right right?
- 48:49Speaker 2: Right?
- 48:49Speaker 1: So you call it out?
- 48:50Speaker 3: I said, I think this has got to be a
- 48:51Speaker 3: why delay screen?
- 48:54Speaker 2: God. So we talked about Ohio State having their own
- 48:59Speaker 2: Connor stallions. How many of the power now Power four
- 49:03Speaker 2: conferences have.
- 49:05Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's got to be eighty to ninety.
- 49:09Speaker 3: But like the Big Ten before, well, I'm sure USC does,
- 49:14Speaker 3: I'm sure Washington probably does.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Has.
- 49:17Speaker 3: The only two teams that, to my understanding, did not
- 49:21Speaker 3: were Iowa and Michigan State in the Big Ten. Nebraska
- 49:26Speaker 3: when we played them last year, this is like what
- 49:28Speaker 3: two games before I got suspended. They first of all,
- 49:31Speaker 3: they huddled almost every play. We're going to go game
- 49:34Speaker 3: by game. Last year, ECU new you know, new signals
- 49:40Speaker 3: because it's game one, and they're the best at protecting.
- 49:42Speaker 3: So we're we're up thirty to nothing. Before I even
- 49:45Speaker 3: started figuring out what was going on. Next game was
- 49:48Speaker 3: what UNLV They had one signaler, so that was easy.
- 49:53Speaker 3: Game three, Bowling Green, they were okay protecting. I figured
- 50:00Speaker 3: them out pretty early. Game four, Rutgers, they huddled every
- 50:05Speaker 3: single play. They're they're really good at getting signals. So again,
- 50:10Speaker 3: you're really good, Like, you know, we huddled.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Yeah, Nebraska handled business.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Yeah, we handled business.
- 50:20Speaker 2: So there, they're very good at protecting their players.
- 50:22Speaker 3: Very good because they're they're good at getting signals.
- 50:25Speaker 2: So they did you figure them out at all?
- 50:28Speaker 3: Well, like I know their guy. Yeah, so we both
- 50:32Speaker 3: First of all, Michigan offense, we don't. We don't. We
- 50:34Speaker 3: never really steal signals. We we huddle more than anyone
- 50:38Speaker 3: in the country, I think besides Air Force maybe or
- 50:40Speaker 3: whoever one of the service academies. But you don't see
- 50:44Speaker 3: Michigan go up temple all too much. But yeah, we
- 50:48Speaker 3: huddled every play, and they huddled every play. And then
- 50:50Speaker 3: after the game I talked to their guy and we
- 50:52Speaker 3: just kind of that was the ultimate stalemate.
- 50:54Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, And did you know him personally before the game.
- 51:00Speaker 3: Yeah, oh yeah yeah. And then right after the game,
- 51:02Speaker 3: all right, right back to you know, whatever you need
- 51:04Speaker 3: help with, you know, let me know, I'll give you
- 51:05Speaker 3: what I got, and he gives me what he's got,
- 51:08Speaker 3: you know, And that happens every Sunday, right.
- 51:11Speaker 2: So every Sunday you essentially talk to the team you
- 51:13Speaker 2: just played their guy.
- 51:15Speaker 3: Well, anyone a lot of a lot of coaches do
- 51:18Speaker 3: that too. It's like, right, I'm sure the head coaches
- 51:21Speaker 3: exchanged information with and not even just the team you
- 51:23Speaker 3: just played, like, you know, okay, what Michigan's got Illinois
- 51:27Speaker 3: coming up? And Illinois already played Nebraska, so I could
- 51:30Speaker 3: call Nebraska's guy and be like, hey, what you got
- 51:32Speaker 3: in Illinois? Who do you play next? I'll give you
- 51:34Speaker 3: what I got on so and so. Right, that happens
- 51:36Speaker 3: all the time. And that's not just signals, that's decordinators.
- 51:40Speaker 3: You know, hey, what plays did you like? What what
- 51:41Speaker 3: did you see? You know all that. So yeah, after
- 51:47Speaker 3: that Rutgers game, it was right back to all right,
- 51:50Speaker 3: we're friends now. We knew that was going to happen.
- 51:52Speaker 3: No signals at all the entire game. And then the
- 51:56Speaker 3: next game was Nebraska and they did not signal until
- 52:03Speaker 3: like their third drive of the game. We were already
- 52:06Speaker 3: up fourteen nothing before their first signal.
- 52:08Speaker 1: Right, they had the third and one pick.
- 52:10Speaker 3: But the funniest thing was, you know, most teams have
- 52:13Speaker 3: boards that either sometimes it means formation, sometimes it tells
- 52:18Speaker 3: you which signaler is live. It could mean many different things.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Nebraska's boards told you which signaller was live and they
- 52:27Speaker 3: had these quadrants and pictures in each quadrant, and most
- 52:30Speaker 3: of the pictures I'm sure it didn't mean anything, but
- 52:32Speaker 3: one of the boards they had had my high school
- 52:34Speaker 3: logo on it.
- 52:35Speaker 1: No ship nice, so they knew it.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Was pretty funny. We all know, we all know who
- 52:41Speaker 3: each other are, so that was probably just a funny.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Like, yeah, look at any other intel with Nebraska.
- 52:51Speaker 3: No, who they play next week?
- 52:55Speaker 1: We it's a bye week.
- 52:55Speaker 3: But then Indiana, Indiana, that's a good game.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Yeah, where is it at Indiana?
- 53:01Speaker 2: What kind of what kind of information can you give
- 53:02Speaker 2: us in Indiana?
- 53:04Speaker 3: Uh, give me a week.
- 53:06Speaker 1: I was gonna say, wait for your next go back
- 53:09Speaker 1: to the JMU stuff. Yeah, yep, with who is it signetti?
- 53:13Speaker 3: Oh he's really good.
- 53:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:17Speaker 3: And then the next game after Rutgers last years, Minnesota
- 53:20Speaker 3: they huddled every play and.
- 53:21Speaker 2: Then you guys body bag.
- 53:23Speaker 3: And then and then Indiana, Uh they were decent at
- 53:26Speaker 3: protecting their signals. And then and then I wasn't there.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Did Michigan have a signal steeler before you?
- 53:35Speaker 3: No?
- 53:35Speaker 1: So that again there.
- 53:36Speaker 3: When I went from Navy to there, like once I
- 53:39Speaker 3: was in the Marine Corps. Uh, it was twenty eighteen
- 53:43Speaker 3: was the start of it? I it was maybe week
- 53:46Speaker 3: four five, I think Actually the last game I was
- 53:49Speaker 3: not the last game I was in the stands for.
- 53:53Speaker 3: May have been Michigan Nebraska in like twenty eighteen. Maybe
- 53:57Speaker 3: it was Northwestern, I don't remember who it was. It
- 53:59Speaker 3: was one of those two teams. Yeah, and then after that,
- 54:01Speaker 3: I'm on the field, you know, because I asked, well,
- 54:04Speaker 3: I was there for a two week kind of limbo
- 54:07Speaker 3: period between training and being stationed in California, and so
- 54:09Speaker 3: I asked like, Hey, what can I do on game day?
- 54:12Speaker 3: And they're like, I don't know. What do you think?
- 54:16Speaker 3: I said, well, I mean I did this a Navy.
- 54:18Speaker 3: I'm gonna try that. And they're, yeah, sure, I don't
- 54:20Speaker 3: think we have anyone doing that, and just ran with it.
- 54:28Speaker 3: I don't. I don't know about that.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Well, let me ask the question, because did anyone from
- 54:32Speaker 2: South Carolina get signs from you to steal from Tennessee
- 54:36Speaker 2: and Georgia.
- 54:37Speaker 3: I don't know anyone at South Carolina. Now Here's what
- 54:40Speaker 3: I'll say. There's this whole like a giant circle of
- 54:47Speaker 3: the intel guys right that know each other, right, and
- 54:51Speaker 3: you're usually one or two phone calls away from anyone
- 54:56Speaker 3: you want, right, Like if I if we played we
- 55:00Speaker 3: played Georgia in twenty one in the Orange Bowl, and
- 55:05Speaker 3: I got a hold of a couple SEC teams that
- 55:10Speaker 3: were playing Big ten teams in their bowl game, and
- 55:13Speaker 3: so I'd give them what I had on them, and
- 55:15Speaker 3: they give me what they had on Georgia. Also, this
- 55:20Speaker 3: was my favorite. So trading happens all the time. Right,
- 55:24Speaker 3: twenty twenty one, we lose the Michigan State Kenneth Walker
- 55:26Speaker 3: a great.
- 55:27Speaker 2: Game, played fantastic YEP, and we needed some help.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Right, they had to lose twice and we had to
- 55:36Speaker 3: Michigan State had to lose twice, and then that would
- 55:40Speaker 3: have resulted in having a three way tie, or no,
- 55:43Speaker 3: we would have beaten Ohio State and then it would
- 55:45Speaker 3: just been us in Ohio State because then Michigan State
- 55:47Speaker 3: would not have been in that three way tie. And
- 55:50Speaker 3: they lost to Purdue, and then I think it was
- 55:54Speaker 3: the next week they played Ohio State the week before
- 55:56Speaker 3: we played Ohio State, and so we needed Ohio State
- 55:59Speaker 3: to win. So I gave Michigan State signals to a
- 56:04Speaker 3: buddy of mine and said, hey, I changed all the logos.
- 56:07Speaker 3: It looked I made it look like it came from
- 56:09Speaker 3: a different school that I don't. I don't want to
- 56:10Speaker 3: give Ohio State something from Michigan. Right, they might not
- 56:13Speaker 3: use it, who knows, but we need Ohio State to win,
- 56:16Speaker 3: and I know they steal a crap out of defensive signals.
- 56:19Speaker 3: So here you go. So I made it. I gave
- 56:21Speaker 3: it to a buddy who may have given it to
- 56:24Speaker 3: a buddy who then gave it to Ohio State.
- 56:26Speaker 2: And say, that's a game of telephone.
- 56:28Speaker 3: Yep, I got this from so and so, you know,
- 56:30Speaker 3: name your school university. And yeah, so they got I'm
- 56:36Speaker 3: sure they probably already had them, but it just confirmed everything.
- 56:40Speaker 3: But yeah, and then they won like sixty to nothing,
- 56:43Speaker 3: and that's.
- 56:44Speaker 2: All you needed.
- 56:44Speaker 1: Yep.
- 56:46Speaker 2: Does in this in this world of trading, does anybody
- 56:50Speaker 2: ever trade their own schools information?
- 56:54Speaker 3: I have no idea. That'd be crazy, but.
- 56:58Speaker 1: You never know, right because I'm assuming like trade their
- 57:01Speaker 1: own schools information.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Right, Like I'm assuming not everybody was as massive a
- 57:06Speaker 2: fan of the school they worked for like you were.
- 57:09Speaker 2: So I know that, you know, just like corrupt politicians.
- 57:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sure I wouldn't put it past certain people.
- 57:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna throw one out there, go ahead. Lineberry coach
- 57:19Speaker 1: got fired last year, yeah, or he resigned and then
- 57:21Speaker 1: when Obama fired No, that.
- 57:23Speaker 3: Was that was two years ago coaching.
- 57:25Speaker 2: No, No, that was that was last year last year.
- 57:28Speaker 3: No, but he so it was at the end of
- 57:29Speaker 3: twenty twenty two. He wasn't at Michigan during the twenty
- 57:34Speaker 3: three season.
- 57:35Speaker 1: Wasn't somebody at Michigan during last year? Not during the season,
- 57:39Speaker 1: and their computer kind of got found grenade the computer
- 57:42Speaker 1: and then they went to Alabama.
- 57:45Speaker 3: That you're you're mixing stories right now.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Okay, can you help differentiate the stories?
- 57:50Speaker 1: Would that George.
- 57:51Speaker 3: Hilo as a linebacker coach in twenty twenty two? He
- 57:55Speaker 3: was not at Michigan in twenty three and then was
- 57:57Speaker 3: hired by Obama before our game, But he was like
- 58:00Speaker 3: eleven months removed or whatever got you. I don't quote
- 58:04Speaker 3: man exactly right.
- 58:05Speaker 2: And you you assumed the reason why he was hired
- 58:08Speaker 2: by Alabama right before?
- 58:10Speaker 3: Well, yeah, why wouldn't you have hired him earlier in
- 58:12Speaker 3: the year, right?
- 58:13Speaker 2: Because Alabama was trying to cheat? I'll say it.
- 58:17Speaker 1: I mean it's just like in the NFL if somebody like, yeah,
- 58:20Speaker 1: if I were to be playing for Washington, I get
- 58:23Speaker 1: cut and the Eagles bring me in right away and
- 58:24Speaker 1: they want to just know.
- 58:26Speaker 2: Like you're you're squealing like a pig.
- 58:30Speaker 1: Oh yeah, when I when I when I came to
- 58:32Speaker 1: the Titans, I was in the offensive room with Lafleur
- 58:34Speaker 1: and then breaking down the Washington breaking down Washington defense,
- 58:38Speaker 1: how we played cover one and how we did things
- 58:39Speaker 1: in the red zone, how we played triangle when it
- 58:43Speaker 1: was three by one, like all that stuff. You want
- 58:46Speaker 1: to win. I mean, at the end of the day,
- 58:48Speaker 1: you want to win.
- 58:49Speaker 2: I want to keep breaking down this this crazy underground
- 58:53Speaker 2: world of trading different teams information. When did you become
- 58:56Speaker 2: aware of this?
- 58:58Speaker 5: Uh, eighteen eighteen is when you found out there's a navy.
- 59:02Speaker 3: Yeah. I never no one ever really talked to me
- 59:07Speaker 3: from other season Na, yeah, leaving it.
- 59:11Speaker 1: I want help.
- 59:11Speaker 2: We're good.
- 59:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I appreciate you. I just got killed.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, yes, still shiit twenty eighteen.
- 59:24Speaker 3: It was after the after the regular season. I think
- 59:28Speaker 3: it was after that I got a call someone asking
- 59:30Speaker 3: for some stuff on some certain teams. Yeah, and that's
- 59:33Speaker 3: when I was like, wait, what what teams?
- 59:38Speaker 2: What teams were calling about?
- 59:39Speaker 3: What teams again, I shouldn't read anyone, Okay.
- 59:42Speaker 1: I have a question in your opinion subjective of course,
- 59:48Speaker 1: What are the best hidden cameras on the market? Is
- 59:52Speaker 1: it Sony Cannon? Are there some glasses out there?
- 59:57Speaker 3: I am not in a hidden camera business. I don't
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: need hitting cameras.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: We're gonna take a quick moment and interrupt this episode
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: this football season, don't walk around with helmet hair like
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: a total rookie. You've been in the game long enough
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: to know that how you wear your hair matters, and
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: just because your team's mascot is a wolverine doesn't mean
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: you should look like one. Up top, keep your head
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: in the game and go to sport Clips. They are
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: pro stylists that have mastered the x's and o's of
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: men's hair, so you can get a tight fade well
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: kicking back and watch us and fade routes on TV.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: They'll have a perfectly crafted game plan to make you
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: look your best, no halftime adjustments needed. Remember the difference
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: between an okay cut and a great cut is called
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: sport clips. It is a game changer. Back to this episode, tea.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Breaks have been taken by Connor and by will I
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: had this protein bar and let me give a shameless
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: shoutout real quick, dude to alpha alpha ten?
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Is that what it is? Alpha ten? No free shoutouts.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: However, this is like a mom and pop shop type
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: thing to get off a nation Chelsea very delicious, sticks
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: to your teeth, coats the.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Throat, coats the throat.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: So there's been so much obviously the landscape of college
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: football and how you do play calling has changed so much,
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: and a lot of it has to do with what
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: happened last year with Michigan and everything like that. That you
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: are piny fingers at you.
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: I don't think anything is people. People didn't people in
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: football didn't change much. Yeah, it's just the media perception.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: So because now they're going to the comp times, so
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: is it much more difficult to steal?
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: So now it's actually signal seeling is happening more now.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: So remember I explained the whole you know, how how
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: it evolved, how it works, and the difference between the
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: NFL and college it's just because of the tempo. I mean, shoot,
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: NFL teams still signals some not all the time, but
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: like if they ever want to go tempo, they signal.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Yeah, go temple.
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: You gotta signal.
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: Sometimes it's the coach to the quarterback and then the
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: quarterback signals to the receivers and tells everyone in the core.
- 1:02:00Speaker 3: Or some teams have signalers on the sideline that are
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: ready to signal anytime they want to go tempo. That's
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: the league though. College now that new helmet communications. It's
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: not a rule, right, it's not a mandate, it's just
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: a feature. It's a tool. So now coaches can talk
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: to the quarterbacks. That doesn't mean they have to signal
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: or or that doesn't mean they have to huddle or
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: that they want to huddle. So what's happening now, and
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: this isn't for everyone, but a lot of teams are
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: doing this. Is now they are continuing to go up
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: tempo and they are stealing the defensive signal and now
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: they can just talk to the quarterback up until fifteen
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: seconds and tell them exactly what's coming. So, hey, they're
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: blitzing the nickel, they're dropping the boundary in, throw the
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: slant to the slot. Whatever it is. Now you can
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: do that. There's already you know, I'm not going to
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: say who. It's not a Big ten school, but there's
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: already been a team that has had bluetooth to the
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: quarterback for years.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: No shit, really, I guess.
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: I'm not even I'm not gonna tell you if you're cold.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: It's just not in the big ten.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: It's a big time team.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: It's a powerful, powerful power five what do you want
- 1:03:16Speaker 3: to call it? Time?
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: Yeah, is irrelevant?
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: So like why you know the officials aren't going to
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: check to see if there's bluetooth because in ninety nine
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: percent of people's minds, you would only have bluetooth to
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: huddle up, when in reality, you have bluetooth to tell
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: the QB what the defensive signal is. Now that's happening
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: a lot. So it's I mean, it's funny. I've I've
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: gotten phone calls from teams asking if I still have
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: so and so signals and whatnot? Really uh, And I'm
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: not even you know, technically in it right now, technically
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: technically uh. And then I mean, shoot, I have gone
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: to every Michigan game and everyone we played his signal.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: Really on offense, and you are you're still sitting Minnesota
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: did not, they didn't last, but everyone else sitting in
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: the stands and you can see the signal color, and
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: so you essentially know what's happening.
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: Uh. You know, when I'm at the Michigan games, now,
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: I'm just there to enjoy it. When I know, I'm
- 1:04:19Speaker 3: obviously aware enough to see, oh they're signaling. And for example,
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: like USC when we played USC, you know it's the
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: Lincoln Riley offense. It's the same as his brother Garrett
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: Riley when he was at TCU and now Clemson. I
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: was even remembering some of the stuff like, oh, wait,
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: isn't this this is just all go special and it
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: was right. You know, they're not they're not changing their signals.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: Maybe a few, but like Texas, they they signaled every
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: single play the whole game. And you know, again it's
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: or we're definitely at a disadvantage now because we don't
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: have our signal guy and everyone else has theirs. So
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: you know, it goes back to that cat cat mouse game.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: So you've not become the mouse in every situation.
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: Uh yeah, unless you make sure you signal second. So
- 1:05:10Speaker 3: and there we didn't make sure we're doing that if
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: or not.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: Yeah, what do you see out of Michigan this year? Issue?
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: I mean, outside of not having a quarterback, well, you.
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: Have fifteen guys or whatever that we lost the league, right, Like,
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: that's not easy? Yeah, okay, and then you lose your
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: strength coach, your entire defensive staff. You know, you're obviously
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: your head coach. It's it's gonna be a step back,
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: you know, it's not it's not that easy to maintain
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: success when you when when that happens. Yeah, I think. Uh,
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: I watched your video yesterday. You know, I'm still optimistic,
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: too good. And I told you not to watch. I
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: told nobody to watch. Correct.
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: I was just putting for people just to.
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: Have correct I heard someone else watching it stole that, ye,
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: And uh, you know I think, well won the bye
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: week couldn't come in any better time. Well timed bye week.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: There's a lot of parody in college football this year,
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: a lot. Yeah. That must be a product of nil
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: and the portal in full effect now. But you know,
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: other than Texas, and I mean, I guess Ohio State
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: that they beat they did beat Iowa. But has anyone
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: else looked really good every single week? Right?
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: In your opinion, you feel like because you were on
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: that side of it, you were also in recruiting. Do
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: you feel like Michigan is doing what they need to
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: do in the whole portal game with the nil and
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: everything else.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the issue at the portal that a
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: lot of people are voicing their opinions now and they're
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: upset about you know, why did we not get someone
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: at this position in that position? Well, the portal was
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: closed by the time. Like, something's got to happen in
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: college football because if you make the playoffs, you are
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: screwed for the portal for the following season because the
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: portal time frame is while you're prepping for the playoffs,
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: So your players aren't announcing if they're leaving or not.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: So how do you recruit a guy and convince him
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: to come to Michigan when that guy, for all he knows, like, well,
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: so and so isn't leaving, And how do you tell him, Oh,
- 1:07:34Speaker 3: he is going to leave? But then what if he
- 1:07:36Speaker 3: doesn't leave? You know, And that's not that's not on
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: a kid either, Like like JJ for example, you can't
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: expect him to make an announcement during the playoffs about
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: if he's going to go to the league. Right, He's
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: not thinking about that, right, He's just in the moment,
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: and that's that's who he is. Right, and that's also
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: who he should be for the team in that moment.
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: But he's not. Yeah, I mean maybe there's backdoor conversations
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: with his family, but he's not going to make some
- 1:08:02Speaker 3: announcement saying, you know, hey, I'm gonna leave after this game.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: So that's an issue the timing of everything because then
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: it's like, you know, are they students or are they athletes?
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: Because the semester starting in January is really what why
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: the portal from my understanding, why the portal closes at
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: that time and then it just opens up for a
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: couple of days. But everyone that you would want.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: Is all the all the best players are gone. Now
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: you're getting the tier two, two or three guys.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: So you know, Sharon is definitely the man for the job.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: He is an elite leader. Everyone loves him, great dude
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: loves football. Like I remember, you know, if it's.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: One a m.
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: And you're on your grind watching film, whatever you're doing,
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: and you go to the bathroom or you go get
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: water whatever and come back, and he was always one
- 1:09:00Speaker 3: of the like three people that were there that late.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: Still yes, still about it, all about it. So I
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: mean it seems like we're gonna they're gonna have a
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: chance to do the portal this year not making the playoffs.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: If they don't make the playoffs, correct, we'll have time, Correct,
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: we'll be able to reload for next year, is what
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: you're saying. Correct Now, is anybody sitting in the seat
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: you were sitting in last year at Michigan Now they
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: don't have that anymore?
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: With the signals? Yeah, not to my knowledge.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: What else outside of signals? Obviously you're known for being
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: the signal master, but I think everyone understands that, Like
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: signal stealing is like you're trying to gain whatever advantage
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: you can. Like every every locker room, every meeting I've
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: been in, you're trying to break down whether it's coaches
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: copy or TV copies. You got somebody up there giving
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: a presentation on signals. Whether whatever you do with it
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: is ultimately up to you, depends on how much information
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: you can retain. But what else outside of the spectrum
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: of signals? Was kind of like your bread and butter?
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Was it like two minute drills or situations in there?
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean, you know, one of the beauties at Michigan,
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: Coach Harbaugh hired a great staff to recruit great players,
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: and he just empowered his staff. So there was a
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: lot of overlap between. Like, you know, it wasn't like
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: if I, on paper, I'm a recruiting guy, I wasn't
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: only doing recruiting right, or or if you're a defensive analyst,
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: you're not only breaking down third down or people helping
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: each other out a lot, filling in gaps when needed.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: But during the season it was, you know, a little
- 1:10:37Speaker 3: bit of recruiting mostly. You know, I was in every
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: defensive staff meeting. You know, you're game planning, I'm breaking
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: down film prepping linebacker meetings for coach Partridge, So you know,
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: because it's it's a race, right like every The thing
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: that people don't realize is every I know you guys
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: realize it, but from Sunday warning to kick off on Saturday,
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: it's literally who can prepare faster than their opponent. And
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: you know, the linebacker coach, for example, should not be
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: the guy that is going in and finding the specific
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: clips for the meeting. He's the one coaching the clips
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: you are going through, Like, so I would go through
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: the film and pick out, you know, what he wanted
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: for the linebacker meeting, for example, stuff like that, and
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: also breaking down opponents. So like I was mentioning that
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: formation tendency stuff like that, you know, because every so
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: like you know, Monday for the linebackers might be you know,
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: first and second down, what do they do on first
- 1:11:42Speaker 3: and second down? Tuesdays may be you know, short yardage,
- 1:11:47Speaker 3: goal line. Wednesdays might be third and long whatever it is,
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: however you break that down. And so I would prepare
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: the meetings for the backers, you know, every day, and
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: then you know, the signal stuff because that was again
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: you know, it was just a portion of the job.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: Is something I just did anytime I didn't have, like
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: I had some free time to Okay, we're done prepping
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: for linebacker meetings practices in an hour. I'm gonna I'm
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: gonna crank out an hour of this and then I
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: try to finish that by Tuesdays usually Wednesday, and then
- 1:12:24Speaker 3: give myself two days to memorize everything, memorize my sheet,
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: you know, feel comfortable with it, and you know the
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: tough part. It's this goes for everyone though, right because again,
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: you play your opponent and then you're done. So for me,
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: it was play your opponent. I'm not I'm not kidding. Maybe,
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: with the exception of like Ohio State and Michigan State,
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: I might remember a few, but an hour after the game,
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: I could not tell you a single signal that I
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: just remembered for that game, because it's onto whoever, right,
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: Like I don't care being a president possible, yes, So,
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: and usually I would try to get a couple of
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: days ahead, so like if I fit, let's just say, uh,
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: you know, let's say I were there now and we're
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: playing Illinois in a couple of weeks after the bye
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: and then who's after them, Michigan State. Yeah, so I
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: would try to finish Illinois. Well, pretend there's no bye week.
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: Pretend we're in Illinois week right now. I would try
- 1:13:21Speaker 3: to finish them by Tuesday, maybe Wednesday at the latest,
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: and then by Thursday morning. It's like two separate mind
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: frames where one I am calmly memorizing my sheet for
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: the Illinois game and also getting ahead with Michigan State
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: so I can finish them by the following Tuesday, because
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: I always want to give myself a couple of days
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: to as I'm sure everyone does, you know, for everything
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: they do, whether it be coordinating a play calling or
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: coaching your position or being an actual player, like you
- 1:13:52Speaker 3: want to at least have. You don't want to be
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: like racing all the way up until kickoff and your
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: mind's going a thousand different directions. So that is kind
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: of how I scheduled everything for myself.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: When you so like during the week, you say like, yeah,
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: like in the league, it would be like Wednesday would
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: be like first and second down, Thursday would be all
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: third down, Yeah then yeah, then the red zone and
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: stuff like that. But we'd have assistant coaches like Mike
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: Sullivan would always break down in front the entire offense.
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: These are the blitzes these teams do. Did you ever
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: get to sit in front of the entire defense?
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: And no, because I was an analyst, and up until
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: this year, UH, analysts could not do like on field,
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: you know, could not instruct players or anything like that.
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: You could only assist the coaches. So I would prepare
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: like I would help coach Partridge for example, you know
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: if he had short yardage goal line, I would help
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: him prepare the clips for that and the organization right meeting.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Yeah, are there were there a couple of defensive players
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: that gravitated towards all the information and knowledge you had
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: of the exces, and I mean the guys that understand
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: it in the dah.
- 1:15:05Speaker 3: A lot of the players, I mean, even like Mikey
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: Sanders still is uh. I mean I've I've learned some
- 1:15:14Speaker 3: of the defense from him, you know, like some of
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: these you know, these guys are really smart, great leaders.
- 1:15:18Speaker 3: He's Mike He's probably the best non military leader I've
- 1:15:23Speaker 3: ever been around. Really, yes, he is. Uh, He's that guy.
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: I mean, you know, he started as a receiver and
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: then yeah, flashbacks he had that nice catch, that diving
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: catch in Lincoln, Nebraska that night game as a receiver
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: and then the very next year changes to nickel and
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: he's our starting nickel and one of the best Nickels
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: in the country. Just like that. But I mean he's
- 1:15:49Speaker 3: a guy that he led by example and he was
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: not afraid to check anyone. But I mean I was
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: close with a lot of the players because it's like
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: a brotherhood. You know, I was what like twenty seven
- 1:15:59Speaker 3: years old, twenty years old at the time, and they're
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: anywhere from eighteen to twenty three, So I'm closer in
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: age to them than they are to the coach like
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: the full time coaches. So yeah, I was pretty close
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: with the majority of the team. It truly was like
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: a family atmosphere where I mean everyone got along with everyone,
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: And that goes back to coach Harbaugh hiring a great
- 1:16:25Speaker 3: staff and that great staff recruiting just the right people.
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: I know, we're getting kind of close to that hour
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: thirty mark right now. I had a question about EXOS,
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: and I heard a rumor that there was pirrating videos
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: going on from EXOS, the film company that was actually pirrating,
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: taking Michigan's practice film and giving it to other Big
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: Ten teams. Do you have any knowledge of that at all.
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: I don't know what.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: Exo's role would be or allegedly and that is allegedly. Yeah,
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: well most most teams, yeah, have have Exos. There's dv
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: sport too. All I'll say is I have seen other
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: Big Ten schools signals. I'm talking the original signal film
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: that was fit like a ga doing the signals in
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: the quarterback room right like the players would have on
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: catapult to study. I've seen other teams signals of that that.
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: The people who showed me that claim they got it
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: from Ohio State.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: Oh.
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: Interesting, I've seen that with my own eyes. So people
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: that have the play calls, like Ohio State, for example,
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: may have traded that to someone for a different teams
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: signals or whatnot, and that someone may have may have
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: shown me, dude, you better be careful because look at
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: what they got.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: And I'm like, they made you aware of correct, yes,
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: and that's probably illegal, right, I'm not a lawyer.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: I have a question your manifesto. What what was the
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: foundation of it? Like for you philosophy wise, like, how
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: did you start building out the manifesto? Obviously from military
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: background you talked about the coaches in the past, but
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: you yourself putting this thing together? What foundation was it
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: built off of.
- 1:18:31Speaker 3: The best way to explain that is it's organized how
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: I would organize a football program, which is very military
- 1:18:41Speaker 3: like in like a chain of command like a staff
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: org chart, you know, or usually in groups of three,
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: where like you have the head coach and headquarters, and
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: then under them you have the football staff, the operations staff,
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: and so on. Within the football staff. That would be
- 1:19:03Speaker 3: like anything related to football itself. So I grew break
- 1:19:07Speaker 3: that into three different categories. Personnel, so scouting, recruiting, the
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: actual x's and O so often Stephen special teams, and
- 1:19:15Speaker 3: then player performance, which is strain, the conditioning, you know,
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: trainers and stuff like that. Nutrition, and then each of
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: those has a broken down subcategory. So if you gave
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: me a thought on like, hey, I saw this really
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: good thing that such and such a school was doing
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: with their nutrition program, I would just go boom boom,
- 1:19:38Speaker 3: boom boom. There's a nutrition section, and I got all
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: my organized notes and I'd put it in there. And
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: if you were asked, if you were to ask me,
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: how would you run your how would the logistics work
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: for your operations department? Give me five seconds, I'll show
- 1:19:54Speaker 3: you boom boom boom, and then there's all my notes
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: on that. And that's kind of you know, it's just
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: it's a really good book, Getting Things Done by David Allen.
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: It's about how in order to actually apply something that
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: you learn or see, or whether it be a quote
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: or you know, something from a book, something from a movie,
- 1:20:22Speaker 3: something from a conversation, you have to first be able
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: to capture it, so write it down. Then you have
- 1:20:31Speaker 3: to take that captured thought and be able to organize it.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: That's like my organized notes. The Michigan Manifesto and then
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: you have to be able to reference it though. So
- 1:20:43Speaker 3: that's why that's the beauty of If you're super organized,
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: then I can always go back to that. Like, for example,
- 1:20:49Speaker 3: if I read a book on leadership, for example, there
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: might be a quote about something that's not necessarily specifically
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: you know, leadership. It might be about there could be
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: a football, some football quote or something, and you got
- 1:21:08Speaker 3: to be able to every time I read a book,
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: I read the book, take all my notes, and then
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: I go through the book again and everything I highlighted
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: or underlined or wrote, I put that where it belongs
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: in the manifesto, so then I can reference it without
- 1:21:26Speaker 3: having to remember what book was that from. It was
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: a quote about football, but it was in a leadership book.
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: Like no, I just go to the football section and
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: there's the quote.
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: I couldn't dream to be this organized.
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: I could not.
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: And the beauty of it too, I can talk about that.
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: You know, probably never give away the Michigan Manifesto, but
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: I can talk about it and no one will be
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: able to duplicate it because I'm already fifteen years ahead. Right,
- 1:21:52Speaker 3: How like good Luck?
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: How did it develop over the years from the organization.
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, And it's a Google doc now, And you say, like,
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: how many pages is it? I can't give you an
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: exact exact number because I found this out the hard way.
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: A Google doc can't go over a thousand pages, so
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: it's multiple Google docs.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: No shit, dude, yeah, God.
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: How often do you go back and read and be like, Okay,
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: this is different now, this is different now. Nutrition, for instance,
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: if you take something five years ago someone said about.
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: Nutrition, it's just it's ongoing. It's ongoing, and I usually
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: I try to visit it at least weekly, try to daily.
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: But you know, like if you know I've been traveling
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: last few days, I haven't you know, I haven't been
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: on it. But what I do, Like, so at the
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: Michigan Washington game. During the game, I have my notes up,
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: not the actual Google docs, but just my notes app
- 1:22:50Speaker 3: and I'm just taking notes on everything I see, Like, oh,
- 1:22:54Speaker 3: I was at the Seahawks game Sunday too. You know,
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: anytime I'm at a game or watching a game and
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: I see a play I like or you know, situation
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: like you know, this is bad flashbacks. But twenty eleven
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: fourth and inches in East Lansing and we weren to
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: playfake And you know, I just remembered that yesterday watching
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: the I think the Seahawks Giants game, thinking, like, you know,
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: fourth and inches. If I'm ever a coordinator, I don't
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: want to call player the quarterbacks back is to the
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: defense and fourth and inches unless he's given the ball.
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: But it's just so risky. But like so anyway, you know,
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: that just triggered that thought from twenty eleven. So I
- 1:23:34Speaker 3: write that down in my notes, and then tonight when
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: I get back, I will put that exactly where it
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: belongs to the manifesto. So then whenever I'm a coordinator,
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: I already have that in the fourth and short section
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: to always reference and remind myself.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: Your memory is shaky. Yeah, are you sure that wasn't
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: you at Central Imasure.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: The manifesto? Did you give the name manifesto? Yeah?
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: So that was It was just like my notes, And
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: I think it was during COVID when people didn't know
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: if football was going to be happening or not. And
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: a couple buddies of mine and I had these zooms
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: just talking ball stand fresh in football, and uh, I
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: remember kind of introducing it to one of them, and
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: he's like, this is like a manifesto, and so we
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: just kind of jokingly called it the Michigan Manifesto and then, uh,
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: you know, obviously the media ran with it. Dave ran
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: with it, and I guess I now have to call
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: it the Michigan Manifesto if.
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: You've got to. Whenever you've decided, like I'm done doing
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: the manifesto, you need to print that out hard copy
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: and then just frame it somewhere, just a book.
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: But there's never an end to the Michigan Manifesto.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: That was a dumb statement.
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: And you win a National champions there's already a section
- 1:24:53Speaker 3: in there. You know. This is like a sabanism, right,
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: like where.
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: You can start doing like encyclopedias. You gotta have like
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: a volume one.
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I already have nine volumes, do you?
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: He said, I already have nine? Boy?
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: Are you just doing AI up here? From so she's
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: just been popping up different AI AI pictures that he's
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: decided to make.
- 1:25:12Speaker 3: I mean you saw you saw the recruiting the scouting
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: map in the documentary, Yeah.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: Did you see that?
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: So it's a it's a map of the United States
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: and it's where every single draft pick, right.
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: Every draft pick. So basically what I did was, again,
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: I can say this because well, you know, you could
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: probably hire some AI or you can do whatever now
- 1:25:32Speaker 3: and probably catch you up on this. But it's just
- 1:25:35Speaker 3: the concept. This is just one of you know, hundreds
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: of concepts in the manifesto where you know, people always
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: talk about states, like what's the best state for recruiting?
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: Is it Georgia, is it Florida, is it Texas? Is
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: it California? And I just kind of realized, why are
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: we talking about states? It's literally something that Lewis and
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: Clark drew back in the eighteen hundreds. Why would you
- 1:25:55Speaker 3: recruit based on some state boundaries that were drawn a
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: couple hundred years ago. So what I did was I
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: plotted every single draft pick. I took the Google map
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: layer like off where you couldn't even tell where you were,
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: and I just plotted everyone, and then I just drew
- 1:26:09Speaker 3: my own little regions around where the mass people were
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: and just kind of went from there, because like you know,
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: when people say Florida is great, well it's mostly Fort Lauderdale, Miami.
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: Right when people say California, it's mostly LA and the
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: Bay Area Texas mainly Dallas, Houston. Yes, there are certain
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: states like Georgia and Texas where it is more spread out.
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: But I just kind of figured, you know why, and
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: it's my position too. Now, I'm not going to give
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: away which positions in which sub regions are worth recruiting
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: more than others, but yeah, there's definitely like certain regions
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: are hotbeds for certain positions.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: So what's the best state for recruiter? What's the best region?
- 1:27:03Speaker 3: Region? Miami?
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: Miami is the best region. How's Arizona? How does Arizona
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: hold up?
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: I mean, if you weren't there, then it wouldn't be
- 1:27:14Speaker 3: as great.
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: That is exactly how I wanted you to answer that.
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: I didn't know that's how I wanted you to answer,
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: but that's what I needed.
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: But you know, I think Georgia is probably the best
- 1:27:23Speaker 3: state where if you just close your eyes and put
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: your finger anywhere on the on the state of Georgia,
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: you're closed to a player that's been drafted.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: I like that. Yeah, it's extremely informative.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: I've loved every minute of this.
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: We got a couple of sections, we got twisted question
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: and then tier talk. I think we have multiple tier
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: talks one that we're just gonna give to you. But
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: the twisted question, I don't think that was necessary.
- 1:27:53Speaker 6: All right, This twisted question comes from Greg Hohenstein at
- 1:27:58Speaker 6: Greg Hoe forty eight.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: Graham shout out, Greg hoe forty eight.
- 1:28:02Speaker 6: Your best Big ten super team versus your best SEC
- 1:28:06Speaker 6: super team? Who's on it? And who is winning?
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: Man? I could be the wrong person ask here because
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: I can't. It's not like I can sit here and
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: think of all the players, like just throw in, you
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: know one of the nineties Nebraska teams. I think you're
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: gonna be pretty good.
- 1:28:21Speaker 3: But is that a Big ten team? Though they are now? Yeah,
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: but they weren't Big ten, right, they weren't Big ten?
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: Then?
- 1:28:27Speaker 2: All right, so let's start a quarterback who's representing the
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: Big ten.
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: We're completely creating our team from scratch. We're not saying,
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: like Georgia twenty one.
- 1:28:34Speaker 6: Your creat your like picking players.
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it's gonna be tough.
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: Yeah's that's a that's a very long winded twisted question.
- 1:28:41Speaker 3: Can we we just gotta go like the best O line,
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: the best receiver corps? Maybe?
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: Okay, let's just start with you big ten? All right,
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: Big ten quarterback? I mean or Tom, you're using one
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: of the Michigan ones recently.
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: Yeah, line yeah twenty two Michigan GP twenty twenty two,
- 1:29:00Speaker 3: Michigan on line twenty three. Man, they didn't technically didn't win.
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: We we didn't win the Joe Morroward last year, but
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: that was probably because they just felt back because we
- 1:29:08Speaker 3: won it twice in a row.
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: First time we ever want it twice in a row.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: But that I would say that, I could say that line.
- 1:29:16Speaker 3: Are we working on this together?
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: Yeah, we have to.
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: There's no way the three of us are gonna do.
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: Uh. So we'll say that a line. I hate saying this,
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: but it's gotta be one of the Ohio State Receiving
- 1:29:25Speaker 3: Corps recently.
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: No, yeah, with old Mormon Harrison Jr.
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: I mean, dude, well, if you're gonna pick them, then
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: you gotta pick Michigan's dbs though.
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: Right, So we're just a hot state in Michigan so far.
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: So what's that CJ. Stroud might be?
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: But this is all time, I do you know? I
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: respect CJ. Good guy. He didn't beat Michigan.
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: Though he didn't beat Michigan.
- 1:29:57Speaker 2: Couldn't beat Michigan.
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: Let me see you, J t Barrett. Yeah, they had three,
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: they had Dwayne. All three of those guys right back,
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: back to back.
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: Yeah, this is way harder than I expected it to be.
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: Troy Smith to you wanna.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: Put Kittle at tight end? Pepe grab the you can
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: do the SEC team.
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: Are they keeping track of this? You got you gotta
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: have Joe Burrow. No, I don't know Cam Newton though
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: his twenty ten season. Yeah, superman, Johnny.
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: You guys do the SEC.
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: We'll do the Big ten all time.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: Yeah, the number one greatest running back of all time
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: and the Big Ten. I'm looking at Archie Griffin Ohio State. Yeah,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: that's big, that's big for the Big Ten.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: Okay, so we'll take him. We'll take and let me
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: look at Uh. I'll do I'm gonna do linebackers.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: Oh, I'm almost assuming like again.
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: And is this is this while they were in college?
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, maybe we just do a defense because for linebackers,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: you you can always pick like a like a Pensi squad.
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, when they had uh, but.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: You probably want Arrington. Yeah, Michigan defense.
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: If you're going full defense, yeah, if you're going full defense,
- 1:31:33Speaker 3: I mean.
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: Hay allottle bit yesh This is a way harder question
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: than I wanted to. Yeah, shree Pass, is there a
- 1:31:50Speaker 2: backup question? It's just too much, just too much brain power.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: We might have to all look at of all time
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: best players.
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: Ulton Mescoulton Mescos were the first players I met at
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: Michigan and they made like the Ray guy, you got
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: way too much playing time, Ray guy. Dude, he that
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: uh that door was first made in twenty two and nine.
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: He walked out and they're like, oh, it's big enough
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: to wear a punter can and then first without warming
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: up at the top. It was like the most deflating
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: the Alcala Field House.
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: Where we're talking to Mumford real quick.
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we talk Mumford. Well, we'll wait till these boys
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: we they find out that we're punny on this. So Mumford, I.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: Mean you got Charles Woodson.
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: Yeah, what they can I as I'm kind of just
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: over the question, honest, Yeah, yeah, this is little. Then
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: entire episode is like, let's just figure out the best
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: all time conference teams.
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: I actually have a question for him about Mumford. No, no, no, no, Mumford,
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: go ahead, stick on Mumford because.
- 1:32:57Speaker 3: A question I won't forget about Mumford. You keep that picture.
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: I'm not gonna forget.
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: Give me three coaches you feel like you've learned the
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: most from in real time now, like with the people
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: you were inspired by and everything.
- 1:33:10Speaker 2: Yes, Yeah, guys, we punted on this question, twisted question.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: Three coaches, three coaches he's learned the most from. Yeah,
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: three coaches he's learned the most from. That's added the
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: that's added value to the manifesto, big value.
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: That's actually, yeah, that's that's probably the best way to Yeah,
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: to ask that too. M hm. Kenny amount to Lolo Navy,
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: head coach now at San Josis say winning as head
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: coach football history, Chris Partridge, and I got two in mine.
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: For this third spot, it's either Jay Harbor or Mike McDonald.
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: And ironically all of those guys are in Seattle. I'd
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: say Jay, I've spent more time around Jay.
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: Those are the three that the manifesto the most.
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: Yeah, just from observing them and and asking them questions
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: and picking their brains.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: How many coaches knew you had this manifesto going? Uh
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: not like manifesto? Like, Yeah, I think I.
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: Think a lot of people just kind of knew. I
- 1:34:35Speaker 3: was very organized and had a bunch of notes and
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: pulled out ideas.
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: Was any coach like curious, like, hey, have you been
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: logging everything? Like, let's see this organization.
- 1:34:47Speaker 3: I think every coach has their own system of notes, right, yeah,
- 1:34:51Speaker 3: maybe not as organized, but I don't think people really
- 1:34:54Speaker 3: think about it as much because they just kind of
- 1:34:56Speaker 3: write down their note now, you know, once they realized, wait,
- 1:35:00Speaker 3: maybe they're interviewing for a next job up or whatever
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: and they need to organize everything. It's that's why I
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: go back to like vision, the concept of vision itself,
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: like when you picture yourself as that, you just start
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: from the beginning like that. So you just organize everything
- 1:35:15Speaker 3: as if you're the head coach and then you're ready
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: for anything.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: I love it too, man, should we do to your talk?
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: And then I have one final question.
- 1:35:26Speaker 3: We gotta get a skip.
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, talk about so the boys just they got themselves.
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: Our first game in a long long time.
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: Let's give a shout out to Monthford and we say.
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: A long long.
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: Like, let's check it on conversiding that you just took
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: an ass whoop in like sixty.
- 1:35:41Speaker 3: Yeah. We also play like cast Tech and cas like
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: the school in Detroit.
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: Okay, Mounthford, you say it has been a long long
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: time since you guys got a.
- 1:35:50Speaker 3: W I think they won one game last year, none
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: of the year before, and two the year before that,
- 1:35:58Speaker 3: something like that. So you it's been rough.
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: So you resign from Michigan and Momford calls up and says, please,
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: for the love of God, do something for us.
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: That is that how it happened.
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: I know the head coach, and he asked if I
- 1:36:10Speaker 3: wanted to be to DC. And then it's kind of
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: all we only have like four coaches.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: So and you're thinking yourself, what a challenge, no doubt?
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you see the fucking doubt. What how has
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: the defense gotten better since you've gotten there?
- 1:36:24Speaker 3: Uh yeah, we all kind of coach everything. So I'm
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: coaching all sides of the ball. Yeah yeah, and uh,
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: for example, we have two offensive linemen in the entire program,
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: no ship too, yep, So.
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: Well, you have two players that play offensive line in
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: the entire program.
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: We have two true offensive linemen. So like our tight end,
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: Norman Adams.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: Shout out.
- 1:36:57Speaker 3: Shout outs to Norman could be a very recruitable tight end,
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: had had to take one for the team and he's
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: our left tackle. It gets better, guys, it gets better.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Lane Johnson happened him are so last week.
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: Every day it's like playing Tetris with the depth chart,
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: and our starting slot had to be our right guard.
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: In the game, we won.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: The right guard.
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: Ye stepped up, Nate shout out to Nate, played right guard,
- 1:37:29Speaker 3: got the dub. We ran the ball every play except one.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: All right, So you know it comes with its own challenges.
- 1:37:35Speaker 3: There's a lot of challenges, a lot of challenges, and
- 1:37:39Speaker 3: you know it's really turned into uh, guys taking sacrifices, right, Like, hey,
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: what you know, some guys wake up one day thinking
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: they're going to be the slot receiver getting some carries,
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: and then they find themselves starting as the right guard.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: In the trenches.
- 1:37:57Speaker 3: In the trenches.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: Crazy. You enjoyed about the high school level?
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: How easy this sign sort of steal?
- 1:38:03Speaker 3: No, there hasn't been a single sign. Oh we because
- 1:38:06Speaker 3: so we we Right, obviously we have some challenges. We
- 1:38:09Speaker 3: have two offensive linemen. I mean I could stop right there.
- 1:38:14Speaker 3: So you got to be able to manipulate tempo right
- 1:38:18Speaker 3: to your advantage. So and I can talk about this.
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: I mean, no one's gonna have an answer for it.
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: So you know, we with two offensive linemen, what do
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: you do? Well, we do a lot of uh, I
- 1:38:33Speaker 3: don't even know what you want to call. It's not
- 1:38:35Speaker 3: even tackle over, it's like everyone over.
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: So you just take the two offensive line, like, hey,
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: you're gonna play on the left side.
- 1:38:41Speaker 3: No, no, Like the center is the last guy on
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: the line and everyone else is over there. But you
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: can't just line up like that that. You can't just
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: give them fifteen seconds to adjust. So we we use
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: like five or six different tempos where you know, one
- 1:38:54Speaker 3: of them is a speed break huddle. So we'll speed
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: break to overloading one side and snapping the ball and
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: three seconds. Like you're not gonna be able to adjust
- 1:39:01Speaker 3: to that in three seconds, Well, speed break into like
- 1:39:04Speaker 3: pods where we have just the center and quarterback, five
- 1:39:07Speaker 3: guys over there, four guys over there. If you don't
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: match your numbers, we're snapping it and getting it out.
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: And we scored. We got a seventy five yard touchdown
- 1:39:14Speaker 3: last week on that in the refs through a flag
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: for twelve minute on the field, and I told her
- 1:39:22Speaker 3: I got to stay on the field, stand in the fountain,
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: yell at the ref count them. What do you mean
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: twelve on the field, and they count them and then
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: they go and have this meeting for like ten minutes,
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: Like what are they talking about. There's eleven on the field.
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: There's been eleven on the field, and then all of
- 1:39:34Speaker 3: a sudden they change it from twelve on the field
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: to five in the backfield.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: They're like, look, we're worried right now. How do we
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: get out of this?
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: Michigan State fans they.
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: Saw you, and they're like, probably probably got it.
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: We got to make sure this guy doesn't have success
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: anywhere now.
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: Yeah, but no, so we you know, we utilize tempo
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: to our advantage, and then we'll go fast. You know,
- 1:39:52Speaker 3: we'll go fast tempo and run a play real quick,
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: and then we'll just go regular old tempo, take our time.
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: Everything's on a wristband. They look at it when they
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: get lined up, they run it, and then we'll go
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: fast a game. But will hard count get them to
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: jump first down? So we you know, it's like we
- 1:40:07Speaker 3: had like a ten minute drive. We didn't even score
- 1:40:09Speaker 3: half ended, but like, hey, last defense is not even
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: being on the field. Uh, drive didn't even score with
- 1:40:17Speaker 3: the half ended. It's so funny to the boys.
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: What's your record right now?
- 1:40:23Speaker 3: Uh, we're one to know starting this last week, let's go.
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: Clos are one and oh.
- 1:40:30Speaker 3: We've got three games left and we we actually could
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: squeak into the playoffs if we win these last league.
- 1:40:36Speaker 3: Well we're Division three, so we actually.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: Just beat a Division one team big time. Okay, Right,
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: gotta get the kids.
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: We gotta get kids eligible, we gotta get kids ready,
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: we gotta get kids to buy into the program.
- 1:40:48Speaker 3: Yes, and it is, you know, and I don't blame them.
- 1:40:51Speaker 3: It's been tough, right, it's a it's a big culture shock.
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: And uh when you are first three games were against
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: like three juggernauts, and when they haven't won in a
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: long time, you know, you know, you don't say this,
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: but you kind of go in. You know, it's like
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: it's like being a Max school playing uh, you know,
- 1:41:09Speaker 3: Alabama or whatever, and you know you're you're you're prepping
- 1:41:14Speaker 3: like crazy, but you know you're not shocked if you
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: don't win, right, Yeah, And then week four, Week five,
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: it was way more winnable games. We were in them,
- 1:41:26Speaker 3: and it's just like we just got to get that
- 1:41:29Speaker 3: win to help with the buy in and now that
- 1:41:31Speaker 3: we got it, these.
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: Guys are brought in, right, he's got to get another
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: one against Southeastern.
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: Big game on the road.
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: Everybody show up.
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: How is the student section from Mumford? Damn is Chandler
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: Park Academy?
- 1:41:52Speaker 3: They they that's homecoming. Yeah, I don't think that's a
- 1:41:55Speaker 3: road game. No, it's supposed to be a home game.
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: Okay, right now, the way up, that is wrong, I
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: think so a.
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: Lot of a lot of these scores are wrong too.
- 1:42:03Speaker 3: By the way, there's one thirty to nothing. Renaissance scored
- 1:42:06Speaker 3: three times. How do you get thirty points in three scores?
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: Or maybe it was four scores in safety that they
- 1:42:11Speaker 3: had four touchdowns.
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: But we were hilarious.
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: We were four for four on two conversion.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: I mean, cast Tech is like my freshman year.
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: There was like that, Dan.
- 1:42:20Speaker 3: Lewis, Yeah, that whole Yeah, that was like, whoever are.
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: You guys scoreless up until the last week.
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: We scored in the first game.
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: Okay, but a shout up Momford, dude, shout up Mumford.
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: That's awesome. That's all time. I'll get this last question
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: and then we can go to your talk and then
- 1:42:37Speaker 2: we'll close shop here. So there's obviously a lot of
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: things that you are alleged doing legally illegally with that, well,
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: nothing illegal you're allegedly people are saying.
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: And bylaws, right, nothing against the constitution.
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: Right, nothing is the contition. So there's a lot of
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: things that people are saying that you did. Who else
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: in the Bag ten are you aware of are doing
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: the same things you're being accused of doing.
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: I'm not there, so I don't wanna. I don't want
- 1:43:09Speaker 3: to say exactly this is what this team's doing, this
- 1:43:12Speaker 3: is what that team's doing. But there's a lot of
- 1:43:15Speaker 3: Big ten teams. Who are you know at that level?
- 1:43:19Speaker 3: It's Ohio State, Rutgers, I believe, Penn State, Uh, Indiana's
- 1:43:27Speaker 3: really good. Those those are probably the top four in
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: the Big ten. Who are We're all on the same level?
- 1:43:36Speaker 2: Yeah, what is uh, just for Will Compton's sake, where
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: is Nebraska their rank in the category?
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: I'd say they're they're how many tiers are we talking here?
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: Like if if you if you just say five tiers,
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: they're probably tier two, tier three. They're not bad, they're
- 1:43:54Speaker 3: they're good at protecting. So they got to know at
- 1:43:57Speaker 3: least something.
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: Yeah, right, Yeah, that's good. Yeah, and you're around that
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: tier tier two, tier three.
- 1:44:04Speaker 2: Yeah, in your time obviously we I we've already figured
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: out that you know who hot of States Connor Stallions is.
- 1:44:09Speaker 2: Did you ever trade information with them?
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: Again, the only time was not directly. I gave something
- 1:44:17Speaker 3: to give to someone, to give to someone to give
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: to him to help him. Did they ever get that
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: wins so you have them to help them?
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: Did they?
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: Did they ever approach Did anybody from Holose state of
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: approached you about future teams or anything like that? Or
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: was it kind of like we just don't talk to
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: each other?
- 1:44:34Speaker 3: No?
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: Zero percent? Yeah, and Ohio State had the OG signals
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: from somebody.
- 1:44:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they they definitely were utilizing Stolen's signals
- 1:44:49Speaker 3: well before we were. Definitely. So you're a where that
- 1:44:53Speaker 3: goes back to the twenty eighteen twenty nine.
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: You're aware of Dave Portnoy and his champagne bottles?
- 1:44:59Speaker 3: What about him?
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: Are you aware of them?
- 1:45:01Speaker 2: So Dave has all of his biggest enemies in the world,
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: he has champagne bottles, and when then they fall, he
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: opens that champagne bottle and he drinks it.
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: Who would be your number one champagne bottle.
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: Team, life, person, anybody.
- 1:45:17Speaker 3: It's gotta be ryandah, you know, yeah, it's your champagne.
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: But that's your champagne bottle.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: I will tell you this. You're so bagrady to pop
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: one open. You're just waiting for the dominoes to fall.
- 1:45:26Speaker 2: We were in Columbus for a spring tour last year,
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: right it would be Ryan Day.
- 1:45:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: Who would be your next champagne bottle?
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: Yeah, because I've Ohio states, like that's your is moral
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: and only number one? Yeah, who'd be your second champagne bottle?
- 1:45:43Speaker 2: Person or team or let's say person, let's do person.
- 1:45:51Speaker 3: That's gotta be up there, that would make things easier.
- 1:45:59Speaker 3: I mean, I'm not a Michigan state and that's not
- 1:46:02Speaker 3: a person. But I got nothing against uh Jonathan Smith.
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: He's their new head coach. Yeah, I mean it was
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: Mel Tucker before that was Mark D'Antonio.
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: Antonio was a dog.
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: He did a great job.
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: I respect him.
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not a fan. I will tell you this,
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: I hate Michigan State more little House state.
- 1:46:27Speaker 3: I'm right there with you. When you grow up in
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: the state of Michigan, you're surrounded by spartan buck guys.
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: So like nationally the game, right, obviously that's the game,
- 1:46:40Speaker 3: and you prepare for that game all year, no doubt.
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: But like when it comes down to like this is
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: personal Michigan state for.
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: The state title. Yeah, all right, Tier talk, so tear
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: talk is I'll explain it to you. So we go
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: through our top three talk. Okay, you've seen it. So
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: you're gonna start with your tier three, then go to
- 1:46:59Speaker 2: your here two than your tier one. Our tier talk
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: today is best spies, not best spies or best spice,
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: best spies. So I'm ready to go.
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: Do we have a god teer? Do you want to
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: say on three? One, two three?
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: Okay, Connor Stallions will be our god teer. So Connor
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: is our god tier spy. I'm ready to mm hmm
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: character yeah, yeah, So I'll go first. My Tier three
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: is going to be Sterling Archer from the show Archer.
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: I think he's an alcoholic, but he always finds a
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: way to get the job done. I think that show
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: is incredibly well done. I I I just I love
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: the show. He is a fantastic spy. My Tier two
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: is going to be Jason Bourne. Jay there's been a
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: argument on this bus for a long time. Who is
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: it who would win to fight Jason Bourne or John Wick?
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: My after what rewatching the Jason Bournes, It's clear as day.
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: This guy just stays one step ahead of everybody. Now
- 1:48:13Speaker 2: would be very interesting to see based on how technology
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: is advanced as his movies came out, they're no longer
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: doing flip phones, if you would be able to keep
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: the pace. But he's my tier two and my tier one.
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: Who would have been my god tier given that everybody
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: else felt the same way as going to be James Bond.
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: I think James Bond is the OG. I love the
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: fact that every ten years or so they just recycle
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: the storylines, new new James Bond.
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: Everything.
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: It is just it's all fucking time. It's all time.
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: So that is my tier. Talk boys in the back
- 1:48:46Speaker 2: buss you.
- 1:48:49Speaker 4: Sneaky, all hyphenated, Get some rest, Pam, you look tired.
- 1:48:59Speaker 5: Decent, fuck you Jack, technical, military, solid, k.
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: You need one one more.
- 1:49:23Speaker 3: I'm also trying to think of my three at the
- 1:49:25Speaker 3: same time. Elite.
- 1:49:34Speaker 2: Okay, all right, well yeah we we got there.
- 1:49:37Speaker 3: I mean because I mean two two of my three
- 1:49:39Speaker 3: are on there.
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: There you go.
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: I see Sterling archer that.
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: Show. Mmm.
- 1:49:50Speaker 3: Mi.
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: Tier three is going to be Kim Possible, globally fighting
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: crime do what seems like she's got a great personality.
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: My tier two is going to be Harry Hart the Kingsman,
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: special agent mentor to Gary Eggsy Unwin, and my tier
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: one Sneaky. It's going to be the scout piece. In
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: the board game Stratigo. You're able to manipulate this piece
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: around and when it gets exposed, it's ultimately like you're
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: you're trying to smoke out other pieces on the board.
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: And I love Stratigo growing up, one on one just
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: a chess match where you're trying to protect your flag
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: kind of like capture the flag. You can place bombs
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: around it and there then there are ranks from like
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: one all the way to maybe ten, maybe eight. But
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: then there's a scout piece I can kind of move around,
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: maneuver around that you want to smoke out, and uh,
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with the scout piece.
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: Hyphenated front runner front runner.
