- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 6th of
- 0:16May Hope you're going well. And I reckon your day might, you
- 0:20may have to get a little bit better because today, I'm not
- 0:23sure if you realise, but the 6th of May is actually you're ready
- 0:26International No diet day. This is the day that I don't
- 0:30know who came up with this, but for a number of years now it's
- 0:33been celebrated to say, look, we spent so much time worrying
- 0:37about our weights and eating the right thing.
- 0:40Let's just have a day where we just let our hair down and just
- 0:44eat the food that's in front of us and focus on something else.
- 0:46Focus on the intrinsic things that we value in the people
- 0:50around us rather than the surface things.
- 0:52Now, I sincerely hope that you are not listening to this as you
- 0:56lie in bed after a day of food deprivation.
- 1:00Oh dear, that would be sad. But I'll let you decide just how
- 1:03you would like to celebrate today.
- 1:05But celebrate No, Diet day or not, we still get to read
- 1:09another chapter of God's Word together, friends, which this is
- 1:12the diet that we have come. This is the diet of God's Word
- 1:16every day to shape our thoughts and our minds and our lives
- 1:20around the living God and His Word for us.
- 1:22Oh, how good is that? And that's what we'll do today.
- 1:26And Peter dives head first into his reason for writing this
- 1:31letter today where he talks about the danger of these false
- 1:34teachings that we mentioned yesterday.
- 1:37So why don't we read it together here?
- 1:39Paul's argument as he argues for us and the Truth in Second
- 1:44Peter, chapter 2. But there are also false
- 1:58prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers
- 2:02among you. They will cleverly teach
- 2:05destructive heresies and even the master who bought them.
- 2:10In this way they will bring sudden destruction on
- 2:13themselves. Many will follow their evil
- 2:16teaching and shameful immorality.
- 2:19And because of these teachers, the way of truth will be
- 2:22slandered in their greed. They will make up clever lies to
- 2:27get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago,
- 2:31and their destruction will not be delayed.
- 2:35For God did not spare even the angels who sinned.
- 2:38He threw them into hell in gloomy pits of darkness, where
- 2:42they are being held until the day of judgement.
- 2:46And God did not spare the ancient world, except for Noah
- 2:50and the seven others in his family.
- 2:52Noah warned the world of God's righteous judgement.
- 2:55So God protected Noah when he destroyed the world of ungodly
- 2:59people with a vast flood. Later, God condemned the cities
- 3:04of Sodom and Gomorrah and turned them into heaps of ashes.
- 3:09He made them an example of what will happen to ungodly people.
- 3:13But God also rescued Lot out of Sodom because he was a righteous
- 3:17man who was sick of the shameful immorality of the wicked people
- 3:21around him. Yes, Lot was a righteous man who
- 3:24was tormented in his soul by the wickedness he saw and heard day
- 3:29after day. So you see, the Lord knows how
- 3:33to rescue godly people from their trials, even while keeping
- 3:37the wicked under punishment until the day of final
- 3:40judgement. He is especially hard on those
- 3:43who follow their own twisted sexual desire and who despise
- 3:47authority. These people are proud and
- 3:50arrogant, daring even to scoff at supernatural beings without
- 3:55so much as trembling. But the angels, who are far
- 3:59greater in power and strength, do not dare to bring from the
- 4:03Lord a charge of blasphemy against those supernatural
- 4:07beings. These false teachers are like
- 4:11unthinking animals, creatures of instinct, born to be caught and
- 4:15destroyed. They scoff at things they do not
- 4:19understand and like animals, they will be destroyed.
- 4:23Their destruction is their reward for the harm they have
- 4:26done. They love to indulge in evil
- 4:29pleasures in broad daylight. They are a disgrace and a stain
- 4:34among you. They delight in deception even
- 4:38as they eat with you in your fellowship meals.
- 4:41They commit adultery with their eyes and the desire for sin is
- 4:45never satisfied. They lure unstable people into
- 4:49sin and they are well trained in greed.
- 4:53They live under God's curse. They have wandered off the right
- 4:57road and followed the footsteps of Balaam, son of Beor, who
- 5:02loved to earn money by doing wrong.
- 5:05But Balaam was stopped from his mad course when his donkey
- 5:08rebuked him with a human voice. These people are as useless as
- 5:14dried up springs or as mist blown away by the wind.
- 5:18They are doomed to blackest darkness.
- 5:22They brag about themselves with empty, foolish boasting, with an
- 5:25appeal of twisted sexual desires.
- 5:28They lure back into sin those who have barely escaped from a
- 5:32lifestyle of deception. They promise freedom, but they
- 5:36themselves are slaves of sin and corruption.
- 5:40For you are a slave to whatever controls you.
- 5:43And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by
- 5:46knowing our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, and then get
- 5:50tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than
- 5:55before. It would be better if they had
- 5:57never known the way to righteousness than to know it
- 6:01and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life.
- 6:05They prove the truth of this proverb.
- 6:08A dog returns to its vomit and another says a washed pig
- 6:14returns to the mud. Ah, Lord, you know only too well
- 6:28the temptations that knock on the door of our heart, the
- 6:32temptations for greed, for selfishness, for all sorts of
- 6:37things that are not part of your plan for us.
- 6:43So, Jesus, today we recommit ourselves to you.
- 6:47Help us to live in your spirit, transforming our hearts to want
- 6:53the things of your Kingdom, to want closer fellowship with you
- 6:59and with each other, to be able to learn, to forgive, to share
- 7:05your grace, to walk encouragingly with each other
- 7:09side by side in this life. My Lord, we want to be your
- 7:14people, people who live with the surefire knowledge that we are
- 7:19saved and loved and secure in our identity in you and your
- 7:24family and everything else. Lord, everything else is just
- 7:28trimming, trimming around the edge of the plate that you are.
- 7:31The steak, the main meal, the tofu, whatever it is that that's
- 7:35going to bring us the sustenance, Lord, that's you.
- 7:37And we love you and we thank you for giving us everything that we
- 7:41need, transform us and draw us ever closer to you.
- 7:46And we pray all of this standing at the foot of your throne, our
- 7:51great and wonderful God, our loving and gentle Saviour,
- 7:56that's you, Jesus, We pray this in your name, Amen.
