- 1:00Share with you what we are going to talk about when it comes to
- 1:04peace. So here we go.
- 1:06Let's dive in to our conversation.
- 1:11Hi and welcome to she speaks life.
- 1:13I'm so excited. You're here.
- 1:15Thanks for having me. Jamie, I really appreciate it.
- 1:18Yeah, I know. I like to ask each guess before
- 1:22we dive into the story of what we're here to listen.
- 1:27What is a life verse that? You have that?
- 1:31Maybe hold onto and the good times and the bad times.
- 1:36Yeah, you know, I consistently come back to Psalm 103.
- 1:40So I won't read the whole thing because it's a rather long but
- 1:44it is so wonderful and how it portrays, God's character and
- 1:48God's goodness in the middle of our stories and especially verse
- 1:538. The Lord is compassionate and
- 1:55gracious slow to anger abounding in love.
- 1:59And then it goes on to say, for as high as the heavens are above
- 2:02the Earth. So great is his love for those
- 2:04who fear Him as far as the East is from the West so far.
- 2:08Has he removed our transgressions from Um us and I
- 2:12love how this Psalm reminds me that God is gracious.
- 2:17He's kind he's loving and so especially when I'm going
- 2:20through difficult times, it's important for me to recall God's
- 2:24character and remember who he is, no matter what I'm facing.
- 2:29That's so true. His character.
- 2:32It just really just builds that confidence, right?
- 2:35That he is all Sovereign and the god that we serve that he's in
- 2:40Control and he's looking out for us.
- 2:43I think absolutely. Yeah, definitely something that
- 2:47strengthens our walk in him and so well, I love that.
- 2:53We're going to be talking about peace.
- 2:56That is definitely something that I think we can all say that
- 3:00we struggle and time to time, especially when we're faced with
- 3:06the darkest Seasons, when we see this big Goliath, Whether it be
- 3:11a job loss or health diagnosis Financial marriage relationship
- 3:20that you know Mass anything really that we may think of gosh
- 3:27like how can I feel at peace when all I see is turmoil,
- 3:33right? So I love that your subtitle.
- 3:37It says experiencing God's Comfort when Are overwhelmed
- 3:42and, you know, that is a major just struggle with people
- 3:46feeling overwhelmed and they seek out for other things to
- 3:50fill a little with piece. So I wanted to hear from you
- 3:54like your own story, your experience?
- 3:57Yeah. Did you have in your life that
- 3:59brought you to the point where you need to write this book
- 4:02about peace? Yeah.
- 4:04You know, I'm not sure that it is a topic that any of us would
- 4:08choose to want to grow in, you know, reminds me of things.
- 4:10Things like, oh, I need to grow in humility and then you're
- 4:12given experience. Yes, it is to grow in humility,
- 4:16but I will say this book was born out of a season in our life
- 4:22where my husband was fired actually from his position as a
- 4:26pastor. I'm a staff at a large church
- 4:29for telling the truth. So it was a really painful
- 4:32situation and obviously not what we had thought would happen.
- 4:38Or you know what? We believed would happen But it
- 4:40happened in the less. And so we kind of overnight lost
- 4:45our primary income, we lost our community because kind of a wild
- 4:51thing about being on staff at a church, is your job in your
- 4:54community are really one in the same.
- 4:55So we lost most of the people we had called our friends and we
- 5:00really I personally was dealing with just so much fear and
- 5:04anxiety about the future. We had uprooted just a year
- 5:08before to move and take this job.
- 5:10And so we'd only been there 12 months and I'm thinking, oh, my
- 5:14goodness, are we gonna have to move across the country?
- 5:16Again, like my poor kids. We've already moved twice in the
- 5:19last three years for grad, school, and different things.
- 5:22And I just wake up every morning with so much anxiety on top of
- 5:28this. My son was having some health
- 5:30issues that we were wrestling career was really little at the
- 5:32time and I just remember coming to this place with the Lord and
- 5:37being like God, every morning for me, I wake up and I almost
- 5:41that sense of just not Terror but, you know, you wake up with
- 5:44your heart. Palpitations already.
- 5:46You're just yeah, your body is not old.
- 5:48Yes, is constant state of stress and overwhelm?
- 5:51And it wasn't like our very lives were being threatened, but
- 5:54my circumstances were absolutely dictating my emotional
- 5:58stability. Sure.
- 6:00No. Remember thinking like I have
- 6:02known the Lord for a Long time and mentally I'm telling myself
- 6:06wow I should really I should be able to experience peace but I'm
- 6:10not my life is so full of worry and fear and I felt like in that
- 6:17season the Lord was inviting me and saying and like come and
- 6:21learn what it is to walk in this piece, that the scriptures say,
- 6:24the Bible says, I can have peace that passes understanding no
- 6:29matter what is going on around me.
- 6:31So I got invited me into a season of biblical.
- 6:34Paris where I really do Vin to the word to see.
- 6:36How did these men and women in the Bible Old Testament and New?
- 6:41How did they walk in Christ's peace or you know Old Testament
- 6:45even before Jesus? How do they walk in God's peace
- 6:48when their lives were just all over the map and so by studying
- 6:52their lives and looking at what the Bible says about peace, I
- 6:57was really able to grow in my day-to-day practical experience
- 7:01of knowing Christ as as the prince of peace and is the one
- 7:05who is with me. And so, out of that study, I
- 7:07wrote this book at, with the hope and the prayer that it's
- 7:10going to equip readers to also walk in that.
- 7:13Peace. That Jesus so graciously gives
- 7:15to us. Mmm.
- 7:17Yeah, so good. And so I know most of us may
- 7:22grab onto anything other than God for our Peace.
- 7:28So, what is peace with God look like, how can we grab onto?
- 7:34True peace and you know, not be distracted in wanting to grab
- 7:39onto you know the worldly or temporary peace.
- 7:44Yeah, great question. And this is something I've
- 7:46wrestled with two because I don't know about you Jake me but
- 7:49you know when it my initial thought of like what peace is
- 7:52has to do with essentially like going on vacation and getting
- 7:55some place quiet and away from all of my troubles, you know?
- 7:59Yeah we can't do that all the time.
- 8:02I mean we have lives to live Live, we have jobs and
- 8:05relationships and responsibilities that require us
- 8:07to actually, you know, be present in our own lives.
- 8:10So peace, biblically speaking there, a lot of different ways
- 8:14we can approach it but I think it's important for us to just
- 8:17make a quick distinction between peace with God and the peace of
- 8:21God because you can't have the peace of God that kind of
- 8:24day-to-day experiential. Peace without first having peace
- 8:27with God and this is a good vehicle term that comes from
- 8:30Romans 5:1 which says therefore Ever since we have been
- 8:35justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord
- 8:39Jesus Christ, and this is the peace that Jesus won for us
- 8:44through his perfect life and his crucifixion on the cross.
- 8:49First, John 22 says he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins
- 8:53and so we're no longer God's enemies.
- 8:55We no longer have the wrath of God upon us because of our
- 8:58sinfulness. We now have peace with God.
- 9:01We can have right relationship with God.
- 9:03And this is that foundational piece that comes when we walk as
- 9:09followers of Christ as Believers, that he is the Lord,
- 9:12and the King after that, then we have, then we have through his
- 9:16indwelling, holy spirit, with the, which the Lord has promised
- 9:20us as we walk with him. Then we have access to this,
- 9:23peace, that Jesus talks about when he's talking to his
- 9:27disciples in John 14:27 and he says, peace.
- 9:30I leave with you. My peace.
- 9:32I give to you not as the World gives do I give to you.
- 9:36Let not your hearts be troubled. Neither let them be afraid.
- 9:39This is that peace, that passes all understanding and it's not
- 9:42going to come from our circumstances.
- 9:44It's going to come from a person.
- 9:46The peace we are. So desperately searching for
- 9:50comes not from our relationships getting easier or our finances
- 9:54getting better or us, you know, getting a better job that peace
- 9:58comes from Walking With Jesus and there are some practical
- 10:03ways we can do. Do that.
- 10:04But we have to start there because if we continue to look
- 10:08for peace externally, anywhere, other than Christ, it's going to
- 10:12keep falling flat and we're just going to find ourselves more and
- 10:15more and more anxious, so true. I mean, I've literally been in
- 10:19Hawaii and felt unsettled and not at peace, holy moly as it
- 10:26really does not matter, you can be in paradise and just feel
- 10:30just awful and yeah. So chaotic and Overwhelmed and
- 10:35not. I'm peace.
- 10:36Oh yeah yeah that's so good. I like that peace with God and
- 10:41peace of God. Yeah.
- 10:43Okay. So share with us some Biblical
- 10:46characters. You explain that there was some
- 10:48characters in the Bible that. Yeah.
- 10:50Show us those examples of peace that we can Implement in our
- 10:54everyday. Absolutely.
- 10:57I want to start with Ruth who is one of my personal Heroes if you
- 11:03don't know her. Story, highly recommend reading
- 11:05the book of Ruth. It's pretty short, but she was
- 11:08basically a woman who found herself at the end of her, rope
- 11:11financially destitute. Her husband had died.
- 11:14She's a foreigner in a foreign land, so she has nothing.
- 11:19And yet we see in her, this almost this tenacity, and this
- 11:24unwillingness to give up. And that as we learn through the
- 11:29story that didn't come from her, ultimately God was at work in
- 11:32her life drawing. And to a drawing her, to
- 11:35himself, drawing her, to be calm, part of the family of God
- 11:41and that she couldn't have known at the time.
- 11:42And we don't know in the scripture because of her story,
- 11:45but there was just a stick-to-itiveness in Ruth and a
- 11:49decision that she made to say to Naomi her mother-in-law.
- 11:53Who she went to God's people, and God's land with and she
- 11:57said, your people will become my people, your God will be my God.
- 12:01She had determined in her heart that she was going to Follow
- 12:04Yahweh, the god of Israel. And that is part of what we, as
- 12:08followers of Christ have to do to a certain extent, is say,
- 12:13come hell or high water. My lot is cast with Jesus.
- 12:17I am in it with him and Jesus actually promises us that we're
- 12:21going to have trouble. He is very honest about the fact
- 12:27that this life and this world is going to give us trouble.
- 12:30He says, in John 16:33 in this world, you will have trouble.
- 12:34But take heart. I have overcome the world.
- 12:37Yeah. And the way that we come to walk
- 12:41in that taking heart in that being able to have peace starts
- 12:47with being in the word of God, and knowing who our Lord is, you
- 12:52know, Ruth in the Old Testament, she had to learn about what it
- 12:55meant to to be, in the Jewish community and learn about the
- 12:58God of Israel. And she did wholeheartedly and
- 13:01willingly. We now round the other side of
- 13:03the Cross. We have the word of God to teach
- 13:06us and to train Us in all righteousness.
- 13:08And if we want to be people who walk in peace, it starts by
- 13:11knowing who God is and that starts by being in the word and
- 13:15doesn't have to be fancy. And it doesn't have to be, you
- 13:18know, three hours a day. It might be 10 minutes in the
- 13:21morning. It might be listening to the
- 13:22Bible, as your, on your morning, commute in your headphones.
- 13:26It might be having, you know, scripture playing in the
- 13:30background in your house, but that is a foundational element.
- 13:33Us to be people who walk in peace is knowing the word of
- 13:36God. Because the word also tells us
- 13:39it's alive and active. It changes us and helps us to
- 13:42become more christ-like as we listened to it and read it and
- 13:47Obey it. Yeah, I mean, I remember one of
- 13:51the darkest times and it was the first time I ever experienced
- 13:57that Supernatural gift of peace, that, like, surpasses all
- 14:02understanding Because everywhere I look I should be like
- 14:07crumbling inside. I mean, I I was surprised I was
- 14:11even breathing because of what we were going through but I'm
- 14:14going oh my goodness it just over his piece just took over.
- 14:19Yeah and it doesn't just come without drawing close to hit.
- 14:25Like I had to take my mornings and my times and read his word
- 14:31because you said it's alive and active in it.
- 14:33Sure is. Yeah and just pressing on and
- 14:37just in just digesting his word on a daily was what really
- 14:44sustain that piece and you know going back to the character of
- 14:48God and his promises and I mean all that was my anchor and
- 14:54absolutely and then I got to feel that peace no matter what
- 14:58was going on in my life so I love that.
- 15:01Okay. Your book has sections of top.
- 15:03Topics. Yeah, that relate back to peace.
- 15:06Can you share with us a couple of those examples?
- 15:09Yeah. So it starts out actually with
- 15:12Sarah the wife of Abraham when we meet her she's actually sir,
- 15:16I, the wife of Abram and her that section.
- 15:19It was all about finding peace in a new calling and I write and
- 15:23share about how Sarah's life. Totally turned upside down by no
- 15:28choice of her own. You know, Abram comes down the
- 15:30mountain, he's had this experience with God and he says,
- 15:33Hey, I've met this new God and we are going to follow him and
- 15:37leave everything and go. And we have to remember, they
- 15:40were living in a, you know, pantheistic Society with
- 15:43multiple gods. And, and yet Abraham just came
- 15:46back and said, time to leave, we're following this new God,
- 15:48Yahweh and Sarah didn't have a choice.
- 15:51And yet what we find is and these places in our lives, are
- 15:54we don't have a choice. Maybe people have made choices
- 15:56that have negatively impacted us or things have been done to us
- 16:01that we couldn't change, God still shows.
- 16:03Shows up in those places and is able and willing to meet us with
- 16:07his piece as he did for Sarah. There's another section.
- 16:12I mean there are so many that I love, I read about Hannah and
- 16:14Her struggle with health trials, specifically for her, it was
- 16:18infertility. But the truths that we see in
- 16:21Hannah's story about how God met her with his peace in the midst
- 16:24of great. Physical distress is true for
- 16:27anyone, whether they're battling chronic illness or dealing with
- 16:30an acute illness. And then I also Lee.
- 16:34I mean I love all of them but the disciples that section
- 16:36talking about having peace and difficult relationships.
- 16:39How do we find peace when we've got these people in our lives?
- 16:42That drive us? Crazy, or really?
- 16:45Create hard situations for us? Why does it look like for us to
- 16:48be people who walk in God's peace, in those areas?
- 16:51So there are others. But those are some of the ones
- 16:54that come to mind. Yeah.
- 16:57So good. And I never looked at it that
- 16:59way, with Hannah story and even though she was, you know, Baron
- 17:02she couldn't Have a baby but we can look at that as any kind of
- 17:07health issue. Yeah, trial.
- 17:10Yeah, that's good. That just opened my eyes to a
- 17:13new way of looking at Hannah's butt Horry.
- 17:15Yeah, okay. So what would you suggest to our
- 17:18friend who is listening right now, that's maybe feeling
- 17:22completely overwhelmed and just needs to take those steps to
- 17:27seek God's peace. Yeah.
- 17:30You know, I would say first just a reminder, you're not alone.
- 17:33God has not forgotten you. He sees you.
- 17:37He knows what you're going through.
- 17:38He understands and he's not far off.
- 17:42He is not withholding from you there so many questions.
- 17:46We're never going to be able to answer the sight of Heaven about
- 17:49the trials, and the struggles and the pains that we go
- 17:51through. But God, the Bible says, God is
- 17:54near to the Brokenhearted. He is close to you.
- 17:58And my encouragement to you, today is obviously being in the
- 18:02word. Like we said, Ed going to God in
- 18:04prayer and if you feel like you can't even do those things.
- 18:08Then my third encouragement is to ask God to get you in a
- 18:13church community and a small group Community, the body of
- 18:16believers who can hold you up in the seasons.
- 18:19When you can't do it yourself. You know, I've had times when I
- 18:23have needed, my friends to pray for me.
- 18:26Pray over me. Read the scripture over me
- 18:29because it was just too much for me to even do it on my own.
- 18:33So if you are in a season where you are overwhelmed lacking
- 18:37God's peace, do the basics and if you can't even do the basics,
- 18:43ask someone else to help you do the basics prayer biblical, you
- 18:47know, being in the Bible and reading the word and then being
- 18:51in a community of believers who can lift you up and help you.
- 18:54We all need help. And I know you might say and
- 18:57that's great for you. You have a small group, your
- 18:59pastor's wife, most everyone is desperate for T.
- 19:03So if you don't have it yet in your church or, you know, in
- 19:07your Bible study or whatever your part of Reach Out, start
- 19:10something, you will be shocked. I think it at how many people
- 19:15also want to grow in faith together.
- 19:19Yeah, it really is Key Community and finding that that circle of
- 19:24people that you trust that you can just pour your heart out you
- 19:28know, to learn about God together.
- 19:31And yeah, we're Designed for community.
- 19:35So as we definitely feel it, maybe not before we get together
- 19:39but definitely afterwards order the blasts right?
- 19:43Yep. Yep.
- 19:45Giving to the gym, right? You know it's good for you but
- 19:48it's clear that your and afterwards then you feel good.
- 19:52So absolutely, you know, one of the things I was thinking about
- 19:55too. When Wow's preparing for our
- 19:58time together is that it's easier to get fearful than to be
- 20:03Full of faith when you are faced with extreme difficult
- 20:08circumstances. So how can we flip that script
- 20:12where we're responding and Faith?
- 20:14Rather than fear? Because I think our default is
- 20:18to panic, have fear and then go, oh, I need to take just take
- 20:23this to the Lord and pray and read my Bible, but how can we
- 20:27just have that like where we were responding with knowing the
- 20:31truth? First, Italy.
- 20:34I think this is super important and I think it's also good to
- 20:37know that God understands that our human default is fear,
- 20:41right? It's just read the Psalms for a
- 20:43little bit and see some of David's words of being afraid
- 20:47and being worried about what's going to happen with his life.
- 20:49So God understands fear but you're exactly right.
- 20:52He calls us to something better. He invites us to a life of faith
- 20:57and I think for me, one of the models that I have taken from
- 21:01the word, is that guy? God, constantly told his people.
- 21:06Remember, remember what I've done, set up these stones of
- 21:10remembrance at Ebenezer Stone so that when you pass by them in
- 21:13your children, ask what? Are these things?
- 21:15You can say, this is a reminder to us of what God did, how he
- 21:18saved us, how he set us free and we all need, you know?
- 21:22So many of the Psalms are just recounting what God did for his
- 21:26people. We all need to remember who God
- 21:29is, if we are going to have faith to move forward, Because I
- 21:33would like to think that, you know, we have, we do we have
- 21:36these times in our lives, when we can say, God came through for
- 21:38me here, God did this for me there or God saved my life here,
- 21:43or god Set Me Free there, but we forget so easily, life gets
- 21:48crazy and we forget to, to remember what God has done.
- 21:53And so I have found that for me to continue walking in faith.
- 21:56It's important for me to set up reminders of biblically who God
- 22:01is. But also Specifically who he's
- 22:04been for me and how he has seen me through in the past.
- 22:07And so just one practical way that our family does that is
- 22:11every year we make, What's called the Swindell family
- 22:14Ebenezer list and we do it on New Year's Eve.
- 22:18Every year you could do it any time but we as a family, sit
- 22:21around and we talked through and remember and recall all the ways
- 22:25in the past year that God has carried us, the ways he's
- 22:29provided for us the ways that he has seen us through.
- 22:32We write all those things down and then it's, I mean, it's
- 22:35nothing fancy. It's just a white piece of
- 22:37paper, we write them down and then we frame it and we put it
- 22:40up in our front hallway. So that when we are feeling
- 22:43fearful or we are worried about what's ahead, we can walk over
- 22:47to the hall and we can read through that list and say,
- 22:50remember remember what God has done for us?
- 22:54He will be faithful to do it again because he is the same
- 22:57yesterday today and forever. He's not changing.
- 23:00Yes, our circumstances are changing.
- 23:02The God Who has saved us and delivered us and provided for us
- 23:06and given us what we've needed. We'll do it again and that gives
- 23:10us faith and courage to continue to trust him so good.
- 23:15I'm gonna do that because I Journal so like I do my own like
- 23:19Rick written record in my journal but to have the whole
- 23:23family kind of be involved in that and for them all to look
- 23:29and see what God has done and I was your Talking.
- 23:33I'm recalling. Like I wrote a devotional, I
- 23:36contribute a devotionals to a able moms and they disciple moms
- 23:42and kids as well and and so anyway I was writing this
- 23:47personal story about where God provided and I'm reading out
- 23:53loud to my husband and he started to tear up and I'm going
- 23:57oh my gosh he's like you're just reminding me of how faithful God
- 24:01was and how he Provided and how he was met you right where you,
- 24:06you know, were and and what you that piece that you needed, and
- 24:10I'm just like, yeah. Like so as you're talking I'm
- 24:13like, you know, maybe the family we that's a good thing, not just
- 24:17a, you know, I'm gonna do it myself personal thing but to
- 24:20invite the whole family to remember what God has done.
- 24:24So and it's humbling to when your kids remember things that
- 24:29fit. Thank you forgot, you know me?
- 24:31Yeah. There are things that were
- 24:33really important to them that God did for them.
- 24:36That maybe didn't make as big an impression on my heart, but they
- 24:40need to remember and see who God has been for them for the whole
- 24:43family. It's really, it's beautiful.
- 24:45Yeah, so good. Okay, so I think whenever
- 24:49anybody's like writing a book there's like that one thing that
- 24:53you really want your reader to be able to like take root in.
- 24:58So what would that be with your buck for me?
- 25:01It would be Jesus is worth it. He is absolutely worth it.
- 25:06And I know that I don't know your particular story, you know,
- 25:11when you're listening to this, I don't know the pain that you've
- 25:13been through, but you have unfulfilled longings.
- 25:16You have things in your heart that continue to bring up,
- 25:21anxiety, and fears and insecurities.
- 25:25I just want to say Christ is worthy and Christ will meet you
- 25:29in those places. He will heal everybody.
- 25:32Broken heart. He will renew every broken body.
- 25:36He will set us free in the places where we consistently
- 25:40feel chained or enslaved to sin. And he may do it here on Earth
- 25:46for many of us will experience degrees of freedom and renewal,
- 25:50but there is a day coming, when everything will be made new,
- 25:53when Christ himself will reign over all, and there will be no
- 25:59more tears and no more pain. And we See an experience that
- 26:04peace that comes from Christ in the fullness of what we've
- 26:07always longed for. And so maybe part of it is just
- 26:10Jesus is worth it and hang on, hang on, cling to the promises
- 26:15of Christ, knowing that they will be fulfilled either now or
- 26:19in the new heavens and the new Earth don't give up.
- 26:22Don't give in to the world's lies.
- 26:27That would tell you that Jesus isn't worth it because he's not
- 26:29answering your prayers. The way that you want right now.
- 26:31He will He will answer every prayer in the exact, right way.
- 26:36It may take longer than we want but there's a day coming when
- 26:39everything will be made, right? So beautiful.
- 26:42Well, that sounds like a great. Take away our listeners, the
- 26:47Ponder on there. All right.
- 26:49And thank you so much for coming on here.
