- 0:03Speaker 1: Let's all get over the hump together, right, on a
- 0:06Speaker 1: Yacht Rock Wednesday.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM 13
- 0:11Speaker 1: Under the Zone, where you can always listen to us
- 0:13Speaker 1: for free on the iHeartRadio app. My name is Craig Way.
- 0:17Speaker 1: I do thank you very much for joining us. We're
- 0:20Speaker 1: with you each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through Friday,
- 0:23Speaker 1: from 2 p.m.
- 0:23Speaker 2: To 5 p.m.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Now, an exception to that rule this week will be Friday,
- 0:28Speaker 1: because I'll be in the air flying to Knoxville, Tennessee, to...
- 0:34Speaker 1: be on site and ready for that saturday morning kickoff
- 0:38Speaker 1: between the texas longhorns and tennessee volunteers however there will
- 0:42Speaker 1: be quite the program that'll be going uh another one
- 0:45Speaker 1: of those five extravaganzas uh that'll be going on um
- 0:51Speaker 1: and uh and that'll be going on uh at covert
- 0:55Speaker 1: so get ready for that on friday and then of
- 0:58Speaker 1: course on saturday there will be the uh Longhorns game
- 1:05Speaker 1: day programming coming your way from Back Porch Social in
- 1:10Speaker 1: Round Rock.
- 1:11Speaker 2: So there's that.
- 1:12Speaker 1: So you do have me today and you do have
- 1:14Speaker 1: me tomorrow. And today on the program, take a closer
- 1:18Speaker 1: look at the opponent. as we do every time by
- 1:23Speaker 1: visiting one of the broadcast team members. Mike Keith, the
- 1:26Speaker 1: play-by-play voice of Tennessee Volunteers, was unable to join us
- 1:29Speaker 1: because he's up to his eyeballs in preseason basketball television
- 1:34Speaker 1: tapings and football tapings. He does a lot of the
- 1:37Speaker 1: stuff for Tennessee that you would see LHN do. So, however,
- 1:43Speaker 1: we're more than happy to have Jason Swain, his analyst
- 1:46Speaker 1: on the show, Tennessee Volunteers Radio Network, on the Vol Network,
- 1:50Speaker 1: joining us. And he'll do that coming up here in
- 1:53Speaker 1: just a few moments. Before we do that and get
- 1:57Speaker 1: to a couple of headlines, the producer, of course, is
- 2:01Speaker 1: Jay Carman. And did you go through your evening relatively
- 2:07Speaker 1: unscathed last night?
- 2:09Speaker 3: Yeah, nothing. Nothing too.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I mean, I noticed you were on the phone. You
- 2:13Speaker 1: said trying to line up an allergist, you know, as
- 2:15Speaker 1: part of your ongoing... health issues i just want to
- 2:18Speaker 1: make sure everything's okay you didn't have an allergy attack
- 2:21Speaker 1: or anything last.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Night nothing since that ill-fated fantasy football 5k last.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Spring yeah that's right forgot about that.
- 2:28Speaker 3: But i figured i better have one on call for austin.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Good idea yeah it's important to do that uh you're
- 2:34Speaker 1: in better shape physically or at least um temporarily anyway
- 2:37Speaker 1: than jackson dart um the giants quarterback according to all
- 2:43Speaker 1: the sources, including the NFL networks, Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofalo,
- 2:48Speaker 1: said that Dart is expected to have season-ending knee surgery.
- 2:55Speaker 1: You know, they acted like on Monday night it wasn't
- 2:56Speaker 1: that big a deal. Walked off the field, probably MCL.
- 3:01Speaker 1: What was the thing that John Harbaugh said? At least
- 3:03Speaker 1: it's not catastrophic. Well, welcome to catastrophic because it's happened now.
- 3:09Speaker 1: damage to the meniscus and the MCL that requires the surgery,
- 3:13Speaker 1: even though the ACL is intact.
- 3:16Speaker 2: But he also has damage to his PCL.
- 3:18Speaker 1: This is a similar injury, believe it or not, that
- 3:21Speaker 1: my youngest son had, Jason, when he was playing high
- 3:26Speaker 1: school football at Vistaridge. And he was trying to make
- 3:30Speaker 1: a tackle in a practice from his safety position, trying
- 3:35Speaker 1: to make a tackle in And the impact of his
- 3:38Speaker 1: knee slamming into the ground damaged both the MCL and
- 3:45Speaker 1: the PCL, not the ACL, but it did, but he,
- 3:47Speaker 1: he had to have surgery as a result of that. So, um, and, um,
- 3:52Speaker 1: it took him out for the rest of the year.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So apparently it's going to happen to Jackson dart as well.
- 3:57Speaker 1: So that's, that's unfortunate for them and unfortunate certainly for, uh,
- 4:02Speaker 1: the giants. Um, so, so there was that, um, Also,
- 4:07Speaker 1: a slightly different thing, but I think this is pretty interesting.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Remember yesterday we were running the comments from Brian Schottenheimer,
- 4:18Speaker 1: the Cowboys head coach, and there were several, and I
- 4:21Speaker 1: do use the word several, three or four anyway, questions
- 4:25Speaker 1: in the press conference about the field conditions expected in
- 4:32Speaker 1: Rio de Janeiro when the Cowboys play the Ravens on
- 4:36Speaker 1: Sunday afternoon. Concerns about the grass, the field conditions, all that.
- 4:42Speaker 1: And Shottie's response pretty much is, nah, I'm not worried
- 4:45Speaker 1: about it. Nah, I'm not worried about it. Kind of
- 4:49Speaker 1: reminded me a little bit of that scene if you've
- 4:51Speaker 1: ever seen Seinfeld where George Costanza's doing all this work
- 4:55Speaker 1: and he goes in and sees the boss, Mr., I
- 4:58Speaker 1: forgot his name, but he's just eating a big piece
- 5:02Speaker 1: of chocolate cake that they're supposed to get. And he goes,
- 5:04Speaker 1: we got all these reports. And the guy goes, yeah,
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm not too worried about it. So, yeah, I'm not
- 5:09Speaker 1: too worried about it.
- 5:10Speaker 3: I did see one of the episodes this weekend where
- 5:13Speaker 3: we got to hear the legendary Larry David in his
- 5:17Speaker 3: voice acting role as Steinbrenner.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that's awesome. That's awesome. It'll be anarchy. Yeah, that
- 5:23Speaker 2: kind of thing.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So the Ravens were asked about it. it's Maracanã Stadium,
- 5:30Speaker 1: the big soccer stadium where they're going to play. Lamar
- 5:32Speaker 1: Jackson was asked about it, and quote, he said... He's
- 5:36Speaker 1: not worried about it. He said, quote, I believe the
- 5:38Speaker 1: NFL does a great job at having their specialists go
- 5:40Speaker 1: out there and look over the fields. I cannot worry
- 5:42Speaker 1: about that. I just have to worry about getting us
- 5:46Speaker 1: a dub in Brazil. As for the field, we played
- 5:49Speaker 1: on bad fields plenty of times, so I cannot really dwell.
- 5:52Speaker 3: He's been to Washington.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yeah, he has. Pittsburgh.
- 5:55Speaker 3: He goes to Pittsburgh every year.
- 5:57Speaker 1: The concerns about the quality of the playing surface started
- 6:01Speaker 1: last week. when professional soccer players were voicing complaints about
- 6:05Speaker 1: their home stadium's grass field. So on Monday, the NFL
- 6:09Speaker 1: field director.
- 6:11Speaker 2: I'd like to have that as your title, field director.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Nick Pappas, told ESPN, quote, there are no concerns right
- 6:19Speaker 1: now about the field conditions in Rio. So there's a
- 6:24Speaker 1: lot of that other stuff. There's concerns about it as well.
- 6:28Speaker 2: So we'll see.
- 6:29Speaker 1: We'll see how that all works out with that. And
- 6:35Speaker 1: both the Ravens and the Cowboys are flying to Brazil
- 6:38Speaker 1: tomorrow night.
- 6:41Speaker 2: They will arrive Friday. That's two days before the game.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And the reason Baltimore isn't leaving earlier, it's only a
- 6:48Speaker 1: one-hour time difference for them. It's a two-hour time difference
- 6:52Speaker 1: for the Cowboys. But that's, you know, like if you're
- 6:55Speaker 1: going to the West Coast to play, it's just, The
- 6:57Speaker 1: opposite on that. I don't think that's that big a deal.
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's certainly not as big a deal as what the
- 7:01Speaker 1: Rams were encountering. And again, we had the Mia Culpa
- 7:04Speaker 1: yesterday aired.
- 7:06Speaker 2: From Sean McVay.
- 7:08Speaker 4: It was great.
- 7:10Speaker 1: We talked about what was the quote? Dumbass coach making
- 7:13Speaker 1: travel plans or something like that.
- 7:15Speaker 5: It was.
- 7:17Speaker 1: It was, he basically took it on himself after the
- 7:22Speaker 1: win over the Giants on Monday night.
- 7:24Speaker 7: Yeah, I think, you know, sometimes you, you know, sometimes
- 7:26Speaker 7: you win, sometimes you learn.
- 7:28Speaker 8: And, you know, sometimes you have a dumbass coach that,
- 7:30Speaker 8: you know, makes travel plans that put you in a
- 7:32Speaker 8: bad spot.
- 7:34Speaker 4: There you go.
- 7:36Speaker 2: He slammed the table. There you go.
- 7:37Speaker 9: Boom, slam.
- 7:37Speaker 1: And that was his mic drop moment. He left the
- 7:40Speaker 1: press conference after that. So, yeah, he took ownership of it.
- 7:44Speaker 2: He owned it.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Bad travel planning by the Rams and probably the number
- 7:50Speaker 1: one thing that cost them the game against San Francisco probably.
- 7:53Speaker 1: But they bounced back with a big win over the
- 7:54Speaker 1: Giants and it's a long way to go. So we'll
- 7:56Speaker 1: see how all that goes. And so now, because of that,
- 8:03Speaker 1: Kyle Hamilton, the Ravens safety, said he heard about all
- 8:07Speaker 1: the criticisms of the field, but he said he's not
- 8:10Speaker 1: going to worry about it. He said, quote, I feel
- 8:12Speaker 1: like the rhetoric around the game after it's done, is
- 8:16Speaker 1: who handled the travel and everything better. I think that
- 8:20Speaker 1: just goes hand in hand on who is being more
- 8:22Speaker 1: of a pro or not. That is something that I
- 8:25Speaker 1: think we can thrive at.
- 8:26Speaker 2: So I'm excited.
- 8:27Speaker 1: So again, I don't think that's going to be a
- 8:30Speaker 1: factor for either the Cowboys or the Ravens, the travel part.
- 8:33Speaker 2: The field, we'll see.
- 8:35Speaker 1: And the Cowboys have more to concern themselves with than
- 8:38Speaker 1: the field right now.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Fantasy players, hold your breath.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. All right, coming up next.
- 8:45Speaker 1: We'll visit with Jason Swain, the radio analyst on the
- 8:47Speaker 1: Vol Network, to talk about this matchup between Texas and
- 8:50Speaker 1: Tennessee when we continue on Sports Radio AM 13 Under
- 8:54Speaker 1: the Zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 9:01Speaker 2: It's a Yacht Rock Wednesday.
- 9:05Speaker 1: So in Morning Dance by Spira Jira fits the profile perfectly.
- 9:11Speaker 1: But the reason we bump back with morning dance, it'll
- 9:14Speaker 1: be a morning dance in Knoxville, at least Central Time.
- 9:19Speaker 2: It's 1110 a.m.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Central Time kick at Neyland Stadium when the Texas Longhorns
- 9:24Speaker 1: take on the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 9:26Speaker 2: First time ever for the.
- 9:28Speaker 1: University of Texas to play a football game in Knoxville.
- 9:32Speaker 1: And here to help us break it down, very pleased
- 9:33Speaker 1: to be joined by the broadcast analyst on the Vol Network,
- 9:38Speaker 1: Jason Swain, who joins us on the hotline right now. Jason,
- 9:40Speaker 1: I greatly appreciate your time. I know it's going to
- 9:43Speaker 1: be noon, 10 central, but still a little bit early
- 9:45Speaker 1: for the kickoff there, even astride the river there in Knoxville,
- 9:49Speaker 1: isn't it?
- 9:51Speaker 9: Yeah, I think the fans will prefer the game to
- 9:53Speaker 9: be at 3.30 or a night game. I think the
- 9:56Speaker 9: football team prefers a noon game because it's is a
- 10:00Speaker 9: team that practices in the morning. They're used to getting
- 10:02Speaker 9: up early and getting their business done. So I'd be
- 10:06Speaker 9: curious to kind of see how this football team comes
- 10:08Speaker 9: out and plays a noon kickoff game or college game
- 10:12Speaker 9: that's going to be here and you're hosting the number
- 10:14Speaker 9: one team in the country.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty exciting stuff for both sides on this. I
- 10:19Speaker 1: want to get your overview, first of all, your expert opinion,
- 10:23Speaker 1: since you've watched this team, even going back to the
- 10:26Speaker 1: fall camp workouts, and now through the first three ballgames
- 10:29Speaker 1: of the season. What has really stood out to you
- 10:32Speaker 1: about this 3-0 start for the Vols here in these
- 10:35Speaker 1: first three games?
- 10:37Speaker 9: Well, I mean, defensively, Tennessee went out and replaced the
- 10:41Speaker 9: defense coordinator and brought in Jim Knowles, a guy that
- 10:44Speaker 9: you know, both teams are familiar with Tennessee is familiar
- 10:46Speaker 9: with Texas is familiar with, uh, we saw Jim Knowles
- 10:49Speaker 9: in the 2000, you know, 24 season when Ohio state
- 10:52Speaker 9: won the national championship. And so, I mean, he's, he's gonna,
- 10:56Speaker 9: he's gonna give you different looks for sure. And Tennessee has, uh,
- 10:59Speaker 9: I think the personnel for, for Jim Knowles to be
- 11:01Speaker 9: creative and what he does on defense. And so that's
- 11:04Speaker 9: something that, you know, Arch Manning and Texas offense will
- 11:07Speaker 9: have to kind of, you know, maneuver through and figure
- 11:10Speaker 9: it out.
- 11:10Speaker 4: So for me, that's, really what I'm paying attention to
- 11:12Speaker 4: the most.
- 11:13Speaker 9: I think secondly, Faison Brandon, the very talented young quarterback
- 11:19Speaker 9: for Tennessee that's gotten a lot of attention. Two times
- 11:23Speaker 9: he's won SEC Freshman of the Week, but this will
- 11:26Speaker 9: be a different test for him. This will be the
- 11:28Speaker 9: most competition that he has faced. And so how does
- 11:31Speaker 9: he rise to the occasion? How does he play? And
- 11:34Speaker 9: how does the coaches manage him? I thought they did
- 11:37Speaker 9: a good job of putting him in positions to be successful,
- 11:40Speaker 9: but first couple games, but he wasn't asked to do
- 11:42Speaker 9: a lot. I think for Tennessee to be successful against Texas,
- 11:45Speaker 9: he's going to have to do a lot more, and
- 11:48Speaker 9: I think the coaches will have to ask him to
- 11:50Speaker 9: do a lot more as well.
- 11:52Speaker 1: He already has my admiration, Jason, for no other reason
- 11:56Speaker 1: than we're both from the same hometown. Now, he was
- 11:59Speaker 1: a Grimsley Worley when he played at Greensboro, and I
- 12:01Speaker 1: was a Ragsdale Tiger, but that's a high-level program there
- 12:06Speaker 1: in Greensboro. Grimsley, they're a perennial state championship caliber team,
- 12:10Speaker 1: and for.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Him to come in, he looks pretty comfortable.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Is that what you've been able to discern for a
- 12:17Speaker 1: freshman jumping right into the fire and three games in?
- 12:20Speaker 1: He looks like he's just kind of adapted pretty well.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Yeah, he has. I mean, he's not a normal, true
- 12:26Speaker 4: freshman at all.
- 12:27Speaker 9: I mean, I've had a chance to speak with guys
- 12:31Speaker 9: who have played the position here over the years, and
- 12:34Speaker 9: you couldn't tell that Faison was a true freshman. I mean, 6'4, 225.
- 12:39Speaker 9: I mean, physically, he doesn't look like a freshman at all.
- 12:41Speaker 9: And so he can't play like one on Saturday for
- 12:46Speaker 9: Tennessee to have a chance to beat Texas.
- 12:48Speaker 4: But, man, he's really impressive, and he really is.
- 12:51Speaker 1: When you were a wide receiver at Tennessee, what did
- 12:56Speaker 1: you and, say, the other veterans do to help if
- 13:01Speaker 1: you needed to, to have a young quarterback kind of
- 13:05Speaker 1: relax a little bit and just let it rip.
- 13:07Speaker 2: So to speak, as the coaches like to say?
- 13:09Speaker 1: Did you have to do that, and do you see
- 13:11Speaker 1: that from guys like Redarius Jackson and Mike Matthews trying
- 13:15Speaker 1: to help him along, even though he looks like he's
- 13:17Speaker 1: adapted pretty well?
- 13:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 9: My sophomore year, we had a true freshman quarterback and, uh,
- 13:22Speaker 9: you know, we understood the assignment, you know, defensively, uh,
- 13:25Speaker 9: you know, they got, they got to play well. I mean,
- 13:26Speaker 9: I think that can be a young quarterback's best friend
- 13:29Speaker 9: is first to defense.
- 13:30Speaker 4: And then secondly, the running game.
- 13:32Speaker 9: And, you know, we, we understood what we need to
- 13:34Speaker 9: do when we had a, a true freshman, a quarterback.
- 13:38Speaker 9: And I think these guys understand that, uh, where there's Jackson,
- 13:41Speaker 9: Mike Matthews, uh, Berlin Staley and all the other guys around, uh, Faison,
- 13:47Speaker 9: they understand what they need to do.
- 13:48Speaker 4: They need to do their job. They need to do
- 13:50Speaker 4: it well. Yards after catch will be, I think, very,
- 13:53Speaker 4: very important.
- 13:54Speaker 9: So, you know, tackling in space will be, you know,
- 13:57Speaker 9: something that, you know, Will Muschamp and his defense want
- 14:00Speaker 9: to make sure they do a good job of because,
- 14:01Speaker 9: you know, you wouldn't want, you know, Faison to be
- 14:04Speaker 9: able to be protected with short throws and then allow
- 14:06Speaker 9: your receivers to go out there and make big plays.
- 14:09Speaker 4: So if you're Tennessee, that's certainly what you want to do.
- 14:12Speaker 9: You don't want to put Faison in position to have
- 14:14Speaker 9: to make picture-perfect throws down the football field. Let him
- 14:18Speaker 9: make short throws and then let your receivers go out
- 14:20Speaker 9: there and make plays.
- 14:21Speaker 4: You know, for you in space.
- 14:22Speaker 1: The other thing that comes to mind is in looking
- 14:25Speaker 1: at the numbers offensively is how the carries and the
- 14:29Speaker 1: yardage have been pretty equal between Bishop and Morris.
- 14:31Speaker 2: How about your thoughts on what those guys bring to
- 14:33Speaker 2: the party?
- 14:34Speaker 1: And again, if it's rolling back to the quarterback, certainly
- 14:37Speaker 1: if your running game is going well, it's going to
- 14:38Speaker 1: make the quarterback more effective.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Yeah, for sure. I mean, Morris is a different back
- 14:44Speaker 4: than Bishop.
- 14:45Speaker 9: Morris is a guy who can take the distance at
- 14:47Speaker 9: any moment, has breakout speed. Javin Gordon is listed probably
- 14:52Speaker 9: as a second running back, and he's really, really good. So,
- 14:56Speaker 9: I mean, between those three, you can really look at
- 14:59Speaker 9: any one of them as being RB1. But, you know,
- 15:02Speaker 9: Deshaun Bishop will get the first snaps. I mean, he's
- 15:05Speaker 9: a guy that It's a former walk-on that's earned every
- 15:07Speaker 9: single opportunity that he has gotten here at Tennessee and
- 15:11Speaker 9: done the most with it. And so he's one of
- 15:13Speaker 9: the leaders on this football team. This running back room, man,
- 15:16Speaker 9: very versatile. They're tight-knit. Their coach, man, holds them accountable
- 15:23Speaker 9: for every little thing that they do. And so how
- 15:26Speaker 9: can that running game get going? How can it be
- 15:29Speaker 9: effective is going to be the question for Tennessee. Again,
- 15:32Speaker 9: taking that pressure off Faison. and allowing them to have
- 15:34Speaker 9: some opportunities in the passing game down the field.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Visiting with Jason Swain, the analyst on the Vol Network,
- 15:41Speaker 1: as we bring down this Texas versus Tennessee matchup. The
- 15:45Speaker 1: other thing I was going to ask you, with regard
- 15:50Speaker 1: to the offensive work. Now, I always get asked this,
- 15:54Speaker 1: depending on... how effective the team is, and then folks
- 15:58Speaker 1: like to weigh it against the caliber of opposition and say, well,
- 16:02Speaker 1: you know, maybe the team, they hadn't played a really tough,
- 16:05Speaker 1: tough opponent yet, although Georgia Tech is a quality opponent
- 16:07Speaker 1: as well. How do you, as a guy who played
- 16:10Speaker 1: the game and analyzes the game, balance that out in
- 16:13Speaker 1: your mind when you're assessing the caliber of opposition based
- 16:17Speaker 1: on the execution versus the execution and what you're seeing,
- 16:21Speaker 1: the precision of that execution from not only Faison, but
- 16:25Speaker 1: also the rest of the offensive unit and what they're doing.
- 16:30Speaker 9: Well, I mean, you factor in everything. I mean, the
- 16:33Speaker 9: truth is Tennessee hasn't really played anybody all that great.
- 16:37Speaker 9: I mean, we'll see how Georgia Tech finishes their season,
- 16:39Speaker 9: but you know, you look at how they played against
- 16:41Speaker 9: Colorado and, you know, how they were outmanned at times
- 16:44Speaker 9: against Tennessee. So, I mean, you gotta be realistic there.
- 16:47Speaker 9: If you are, you know, looking through a situation with,
- 16:51Speaker 9: with orange colored glasses, you still gotta be, you gotta,
- 16:53Speaker 9: you gotta be realistic. And so, but it doesn't mean
- 16:55Speaker 9: you can't go out there and beat anybody else in
- 16:57Speaker 9: the country. I mean, this is a talented football team,
- 17:00Speaker 9: a really good coaches and you're playing at home. And
- 17:04Speaker 9: under Josh Heupel, Tennessee has done a really good job
- 17:07Speaker 9: of protecting home field advantage. Last year, You know, you
- 17:09Speaker 9: want different and better results, but Tennessee has played well
- 17:14Speaker 9: under high play at home for.
- 17:15Speaker 4: The most part.
- 17:16Speaker 9: So I know last week, you know, looking at Texas
- 17:20Speaker 9: and UTSA, it looked like those guys were ready to
- 17:23Speaker 9: play Tennessee, and Tennessee was ready to play Texas after watching,
- 17:26Speaker 9: you know, Tennessee play Kennesaw State. So, man, that game
- 17:31Speaker 9: was something else, man. I think the team's looking at
- 17:33Speaker 9: the clock, waiting for it to hit zero so they
- 17:36Speaker 9: can start prepping for each other.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Jason Swain joining us here on 13 Underzone. Let
- 17:41Speaker 1: me get your thoughts again on the defense. Now, you mentioned,
- 17:43Speaker 1: of course, with Jim Knowles coming in, and you're right,
- 17:46Speaker 1: both Texas and Tennessee were pretty well acquainted with him
- 17:49Speaker 1: in the past. What's the biggest difference you notice in
- 17:53Speaker 1: Coach Knowles' defense than what the Vols have been running
- 17:55Speaker 1: prior to his arrival in Knoxville?
- 17:58Speaker 4: Man, they're playing faster.
- 18:00Speaker 9: Those guys, I think they have a stronger belief in
- 18:03Speaker 9: what they're doing, and I think they do a good
- 18:06Speaker 9: job of teaching it. I think One thing the guys
- 18:08Speaker 9: are excited about, too, is, you know, they know they're
- 18:11Speaker 9: going to be put in positions to make plays and
- 18:13Speaker 9: showcase their talents. And, you know, that's really the biggest thing. Now,
- 18:19Speaker 9: Tennessee has a deep linebacker group, guys who can do
- 18:23Speaker 9: different things, athletic players in space, and also guys who
- 18:27Speaker 9: can rush the passer. And so, you know, those are
- 18:29Speaker 9: going to put those guys in position to be able
- 18:31Speaker 9: to make plays. Tennessee wants to address that. the secondary
- 18:34Speaker 9: and become more athletic. And they did that through the
- 18:36Speaker 9: transfer portal. So a lot of new faces there from
- 18:39Speaker 9: your nickel to, to your two safeties in your corner.
- 18:42Speaker 9: I mean, it's all new guys. The only returning player
- 18:45Speaker 9: in the secondary is Todd Redman. Number four, who was
- 18:48Speaker 9: really good in his back half of his freshman year,
- 18:50Speaker 9: last year, six, three, six, four long and very technically sound.
- 18:55Speaker 9: So it's going to be a good matchup on the outside,
- 18:57Speaker 9: especially with, with Kay and Lee and Cam Coleman going
- 19:00Speaker 9: up against each other every day in practice last year
- 19:02Speaker 9: when they.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Were both part of the Auburn football program.
- 19:04Speaker 9: So, yeah, I'm curious to see how Noles' defense, man,
- 19:08Speaker 9: compares against Sarkeesian and that offense. I got a lot
- 19:11Speaker 9: of respect for Sarkeesian as a play caller and what
- 19:13Speaker 9: he's been able to do in his time, you know, coaching,
- 19:17Speaker 9: you know, at this level. And can Arch, you know,
- 19:20Speaker 9: have success on the road? He's certainly been great at home.
- 19:24Speaker 9: It's kind of been a little bit of a different
- 19:25Speaker 9: story on the road for him. So it's going to
- 19:28Speaker 9: be a great matchup, man. I'm looking forward to it.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Another guy I wanted to ask you about, and I
- 19:31Speaker 1: guess it would be collection of guys, because you mentioned
- 19:34Speaker 1: through the portal going to get some guys, and all
- 19:38Speaker 1: programs have done that clearly. Raheem Biles coming in from
- 19:41Speaker 1: Pitt has really kind of anchored the Texas linebacking corps.
- 19:43Speaker 2: There's been things like that.
- 19:45Speaker 1: But I wanted to ask you about Xavier Gillen because
- 19:49Speaker 1: because of the Penn state transfers, you've got an abundance
- 19:52Speaker 1: of those as well.
- 19:53Speaker 2: And he seems to.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Be the ring leader that at least numerically in what
- 19:57Speaker 1: he's done at the start of this season.
- 20:00Speaker 4: Yeah, he's been important.
- 20:01Speaker 9: He's been, you know, each, each, layer of the defense,
- 20:06Speaker 9: each level of the defense has a transfer from Penn State,
- 20:10Speaker 9: and I think that's helped the guys become acclimated with
- 20:14Speaker 9: Jim Knowles' system, a system that many people felt like
- 20:18Speaker 9: really gets going in the second year, but Knowles wanted
- 20:20Speaker 9: to make sure that he did some self-evaluation to make
- 20:23Speaker 9: sure the guys.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Got it the first year, because there is no second year.
- 20:28Speaker 9: It's this year, and next year is not really guaranteed,
- 20:31Speaker 9: but Xavier Gilliam has been As good as advertised, if
- 20:36Speaker 9: not better.
- 20:36Speaker 4: I mean, you watch him on film, he's getting double teamed.
- 20:39Speaker 9: I mean, he was consistently in the backfield during spring,
- 20:42Speaker 9: during fall camp. And he's been a playmaker for Tennessee
- 20:47Speaker 9: in all three games.
- 20:48Speaker 4: So he's a good player. He's a player that's going
- 20:50Speaker 4: to play on Sundays for sure.
- 20:51Speaker 9: And it's going to be a nice battle between the
- 20:54Speaker 9: Texas offensive front and Xavier Gillum because there's a lot
- 20:58Speaker 9: of potential and talent. in those trenches.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:01Speaker 1: In that 4-2-5 look, the other thing that stands out
- 21:04Speaker 1: to me, the play of the linebackers, Arian Carter, we
- 21:06Speaker 1: knew what he was about, even with that goofy, ridiculous
- 21:08Speaker 1: business with the NCAA. We knew that he would come
- 21:11Speaker 1: back strong and what he's done with his charitable contributions
- 21:14Speaker 1: is just incredibly impressive. And then Amari Campbell, another one
- 21:18Speaker 1: of those Penn State transfers, he's got 17 tackles early on.
- 21:20Speaker 1: How about what those two linebackers do in anchoring up
- 21:24Speaker 1: the middle part there in the back seven of all
- 21:27Speaker 1: of their defense?
- 21:29Speaker 4: Yeah, they've been well. I mean, they've done a really
- 21:31Speaker 4: good job.
- 21:32Speaker 9: You know, Lamar Campbell, again, being that trio of Penn
- 21:35Speaker 9: State players that are transferred here to Tennessee to kind
- 21:38Speaker 9: of help with the defense.
- 21:39Speaker 4: You know, Jeremiah T.
- 21:40Speaker 9: Lander is a linebacker that actually is in front of
- 21:44Speaker 9: Lamar Campbell, who was here last year, that just took
- 21:48Speaker 9: his game to the next level during the offseason.
- 21:50Speaker 4: And so, you know, Doles is going to make sure
- 21:53Speaker 4: that Campbell and T.
- 21:54Speaker 9: Lander and And Arian Carter is on the field at
- 21:57Speaker 9: the same time to put their best playmakers on the
- 21:59Speaker 9: field at once. And so that speaks to the versatility
- 22:03Speaker 9: of this linebacker room with T. Lander and Campbell and
- 22:07Speaker 9: other Spillman as well, number 13.
- 22:09Speaker 4: So you'll see different guys out there, man, at once.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Jason Swain is with us for a couple more minutes.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I want to ask you if you can to kind
- 22:19Speaker 1: of give Longhorn fans a an idea of what they're encountering.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I've been there, obviously, to broadcast basketball and baseball, but
- 22:26Speaker 1: never football, and I'm really looking forward to be there.
- 22:29Speaker 1: And if you want to explain the checkerboarding that's going
- 22:33Speaker 1: to go on with the fans and then what the
- 22:35Speaker 1: game day excitement and environment is around Neyland Stadium.
- 22:42Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, it's really unlikely. you know, many places
- 22:45Speaker 9: around the country. Now, obviously, it's a different ball game
- 22:48Speaker 9: when we're talking about a night game or a 3.30 game. But,
- 22:51Speaker 9: you know, the challenge is going to be out there.
- 22:53Speaker 9: I mean, it was reported that the president of the
- 22:56Speaker 9: United States is going to be here, too. So security
- 22:59Speaker 9: is going to be on another level. So, you know,
- 23:01Speaker 9: it's encouraged to get there early and to be patient.
- 23:05Speaker 9: But it's going to be rowdy. That's for sure.
- 23:09Speaker 4: I mean, that's one thing I can guarantee you.
- 23:11Speaker 9: And it's going to be up to Tennessee to make
- 23:13Speaker 9: sure that You know, they're making plays early to keep
- 23:16Speaker 9: the crowd into the game. And that's really the goal
- 23:18Speaker 9: of any team when you are traveling on the road
- 23:21Speaker 9: is to try to take the crowd out of the
- 23:23Speaker 9: game as soon as possible. So this crowd is loud.
- 23:27Speaker 9: It has a decimal number. a record that was set
- 23:29Speaker 9: a couple of years ago when Tennessee played Georgia. So
- 23:32Speaker 9: it is a loudest stadium in the country. I mean,
- 23:35Speaker 9: that's by fact. That is not an opinion. That is fact.
- 23:39Speaker 9: But again, it won't be loud unless Tennessee guys go
- 23:42Speaker 9: out there and make plays and do a good job
- 23:44Speaker 9: early in the game.
- 23:46Speaker 2: We're looking forward to it, Jason.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I really appreciate you taking the time, a few minutes
- 23:50Speaker 1: to spend with us. I'll look forward to meeting you
- 23:52Speaker 1: on Saturday up in the press box. Thanks so much.
- 23:55Speaker 1: And we'll look forward to seeing you.
- 23:56Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you for joining us today.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Absolutely, man. Safe travels. Hope everyone has a good time
- 24:02Speaker 4: at the game.
- 24:03Speaker 5: You bet.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 24:03Speaker 6: All right.
- 24:04Speaker 1: That is Jason Swain, the radio analyst on the Vol Network.
- 24:07Speaker 1: He works with Mike Keith on the broadcast, and they'll
- 24:11Speaker 1: have the Tennessee call on that.
- 24:12Speaker 2: We'll take a break.
- 24:13Speaker 1: When we come back, we have Inconceivable here on a
- 24:17Speaker 1: Wednesday afternoon, a Yacht Rock Wednesday afternoon. And like I said, remember,
- 24:21Speaker 1: it's a morning kickoff for Texas and Tennessee, at least
- 24:26Speaker 1: Texas time.
- 24:27Speaker 2: 11, 10 a.m.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Our coverage will actually begin at 7 o'clock in the
- 24:32Speaker 1: morning on Saturday morning with the 3rd and Longhorn podcast, guys.
- 24:36Speaker 2: That's at 7 a.m.
- 24:38Speaker 1: At 8 a.m., it'll be Longhorn's game day coming your
- 24:41Speaker 1: way from Backport Social in Round Rock. So that'll be
- 24:45Speaker 1: Saturday morning with Longhorn's game day. 10 a.m., the network pregame.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Roger Wallace, Will Matthews will join me there at Neyland Stadium.
- 24:55Speaker 1: for that with the network pregame starting at 10 and
- 24:57Speaker 1: the kickoff at 1110 a.m. Texas and Tennessee for the
- 25:01Speaker 1: first time ever in Knoxville. Only the fourth meeting ever
- 25:06Speaker 1: between the two schools. The other three were all in
- 25:09Speaker 1: Cotton Bowl games, 1951, 53, and then January 1st of 69,
- 25:12Speaker 1: the three times when they met. All right, Inconceivable is
- 25:20Speaker 1: up next here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday coming your
- 25:23Speaker 1: way on Sports Radio AM 1300, The Zone, and where
- 25:26Speaker 1: you can always listen to us 100%.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Gratis, free of charge, right here on the iHeartRadio app.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Second hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300.
- 25:39Speaker 2: The Zone. Craig Way, joined by the producer, Jake Herman.
- 25:45Speaker 1: First hour of the program, we... Took a closer look
- 25:49Speaker 1: at the Tennessee Volunteers as we visited with the radio
- 25:55Speaker 1: analyst of the Volunteers, Jason Swain. If you missed that conversation,
- 25:59Speaker 1: you can certainly catch it on the podcast page at am13underthezone. com.
- 26:05Speaker 1: And had some good things to say about this Volunteers
- 26:08Speaker 1: team and the challenges that the Longhorns will face. Now,
- 26:12Speaker 1: coming up here and a little bit later on this,
- 26:15Speaker 1: we're going to hear from both head coaches. I'm Steve
- 26:18Speaker 1: Sarkeesian from the weekly SEC teleconference, as well as from
- 26:26Speaker 1: Josh Heupel, the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. We'll
- 26:29Speaker 1: hear from them. We're going to hear some basketball intelligence
- 26:34Speaker 1: coming from the head coach of the Longhorns, Sean Miller.
- 26:38Speaker 1: So we'll have that also a little bit later this hour.
- 26:43Speaker 1: And coming up here in a few minutes, we're going
- 26:45Speaker 1: to hear from Raheem Biles, Longhorns linebacker. But before I
- 26:48Speaker 1: get to that, we bring it to you every week
- 26:51Speaker 1: because Ryan McGee brings it to you every week from ESPN.
- 26:54Speaker 1: The college football bottom 10.
- 27:00Speaker 3: We almost need music for this.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of a look at, kind of, I
- 27:05Speaker 1: guess even for the most part, a look at the
- 27:09Speaker 1: worst 10 Division I FBS teams. but it's not entirely
- 27:15Speaker 1: because as Jake pointed out, he picks out one team
- 27:18Speaker 1: that really is not one of the 10 worst teams, uh,
- 27:23Speaker 1: in division one, FPS college football, but has the ignominious
- 27:27Speaker 1: distinction of playing their way into the, simply because of
- 27:31Speaker 1: playing really poorly or doing something really boneheaded, uh, in, uh,
- 27:38Speaker 1: in the prior week. So that's part of it. But
- 27:43Speaker 1: He starts off with a quote, his inspirational thought of
- 27:47Speaker 1: the week. And I love this because it also touches
- 27:50Speaker 1: me personally on this.
- 28:09Speaker 1: That's from You Can't
- 28:12Speaker 1: Go Home Again by Thomas Wolfe. Thomas Wolfe, great author, literary, uh, giant, um,
- 28:19Speaker 1: from the state of North Carolina. He was from Asheville and, uh,
- 28:22Speaker 1: he wrote, you can't go home again from a place
- 28:26Speaker 1: called the Grove Park Inn.
- 28:28Speaker 2: This gigantic big inn.
- 28:32Speaker 1: I think it's now owned by the Omni Corporation, but
- 28:34Speaker 1: it's still this wonderful thing where you sit on the
- 28:36Speaker 1: front boards and the rocking chairs and look at the.
- 28:44Speaker 2: So Thomas Wolfe wrote that.
- 28:46Speaker 1: So acting on that, Ryan McGee says, here at Bottom
- 28:50Speaker 1: Ten headquarters, located in the industrial-sized clothes dryer used to
- 28:55Speaker 1: dry out the perspiration-saturated suits we wore in the 110-degree
- 29:00Speaker 1: heat of Oxford for last weekend's Marty and McGee from
- 29:04Speaker 1: Ole Miss, it was during that visit that I found
- 29:07Speaker 1: myself in a moment of reflection. Sure, some of that
- 29:09Speaker 1: was me peering down into a puddle of my own sweat,
- 29:12Speaker 1: but really it was about the idea of going back.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I recalled the seminal work of my fellow North Carolinian scribe,
- 29:19Speaker 1: Thomas Wolfe, who wrote the novel, You Can't Go Home Again,
- 29:23Speaker 1: about a former local hero who returned home after a
- 29:25Speaker 1: lifetime of fortune and fame, only to find that the
- 29:28Speaker 1: people who helped get him there were seething angry because
- 29:32Speaker 1: of what he had written about them after he left.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Sound familiar?
- 29:37Speaker 1: Sure did as I stood on the balcony overlooking the
- 29:40Speaker 1: square on the morning of the Ole Miss LSU game,
- 29:41Speaker 1: seeing homemade images of Lane Kiffin as a dartboard, Lane
- 29:45Speaker 1: Kiffin as a pot-bellied pickleball player, Lane Kiffin as a
- 29:49Speaker 1: donkey's butt, and Carly Simon-inspired signs proclaiming, you're so lame,
- 29:54Speaker 1: you probably think this game is about you. And that night,
- 29:58Speaker 1: seeing Kiffin's former Ole Miss players pointing various fingers at
- 30:01Speaker 1: their old.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Coach after they had iced the victory.
- 30:03Speaker 1: As I left town, an over-served gentleman dressed in powder
- 30:08Speaker 1: blue Landshark overalls shouted at me, hey, McGee, I saw
- 30:12Speaker 1: your lame Kiffin documentary. He needed Oxford more than Oxford
- 30:17Speaker 1: needed him.
- 30:17Speaker 3: No, no, no, he's incredulous about it.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Yeah, he needed Oxford more than Oxford needed him? Oxford
- 30:25Speaker 1: needs him like we need a jock rash. Although that
- 30:29Speaker 1: made me remember another book written by another college football
- 30:32Speaker 1: coach with a title that was a play on Wolves.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Tennessee football hero Johnny Majors, who left Pitt after winning
- 30:38Speaker 1: a national title in 1976 to return to his alma mater,
- 30:42Speaker 1: years later wrote a memoir entitled You Can Go Home Again.
- 30:45Speaker 1: I remember that because when I was a Tennessee student,
- 30:48Speaker 1: I bought a copy at the school bookstore right before
- 30:50Speaker 1: Majors was fired. With apologies to Troy Kicker, Hayden Wolfe,
- 30:54Speaker 1: San Diego State tight end Ryan Wolfen, Temple Longsnapper, Sam Wolfden,
- 30:58Speaker 1: and Steve Harvey. Here are the 2026 post-week three bottom
- 31:03Speaker 1: ten rankings. Let me go at number ten. Baller State,
- 31:09Speaker 1: one and two. First of all, I was waiting for this.
- 31:12Speaker 1: State of Kent, Utepid, Woo Pig Bluey, Sam Houston, we
- 31:17Speaker 1: have a problem, Utah TAW State, Who, Mexico State, Mizzou State,
- 31:24Speaker 1: Southern Mist, calling out a fan base that's already looking
- 31:28Speaker 1: for any excuse to run you out of town.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Okay, Baller State.
- 31:32Speaker 1: They said, the Cards barely edged out State of Kent
- 31:34Speaker 1: to seize this week's final spot thanks to a laying
- 31:38Speaker 1: on of the hands from Liberty 51-15. All right, number nine,
- 31:42Speaker 1: Nevada 1-2.
- 31:44Speaker 2: The other Wolf Pack has.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Followed up their week one win over Big Red and company,
- 31:49Speaker 1: but big losses to FCS champs. Montana State, and former
- 31:53Speaker 1: bottom 10 waitlisters muddled Tennessee State. If they lose to
- 31:57Speaker 1: one-in-one Air Force this weekend, the mystical ESPN computers have
- 32:00Speaker 1: them hovering around a 50% chance. Then we could be
- 32:03Speaker 1: looking at a legit pillow fight of the week, PFOW,
- 32:06Speaker 1: against UTEPID on October 10th, so plan accordingly.
- 32:09Speaker 3: UTEPID, by the way, had a nearly had a halftime
- 32:13Speaker 3: lead against Michigan.
- 32:13Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 32:14Speaker 1: That's why they fell out of the thing because they
- 32:16Speaker 1: played impressive for a while. Number eight, Western Kentucky Hillstoppers,
- 32:21Speaker 1: not toppers, who are 0-3. It's not the WKU lost
- 32:23Speaker 1: to Georgia and Indiana by a combined score of 108-20
- 32:26Speaker 1: because those games also brought a combined check of $ 3
- 32:29Speaker 1: million and that buys.
- 32:31Speaker 2: A lot of pain liniments.
- 32:33Speaker 1: It's that the Hillstoppers opened the season with a 49-14
- 32:36Speaker 1: loss to Nevada.
- 32:38Speaker 4: All right.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Number seven, in a rut Gers, 0-3. The Scarlet Blights
- 32:45Speaker 1: and USC just read that last paragraph about transcontinental conference
- 32:49Speaker 1: football and were like, yeah, and? Give Rutgers credit, it
- 32:54Speaker 1: nearly upset the Trojans despite the inevitable emotions that come
- 32:57Speaker 1: with hosting such a traditional Big Ten matchup. Sacked with
- 33:01Speaker 1: a K, like getting sacked, Sacramento State, 1-3. The Saks
- 33:05Speaker 1: host the artist formerly known as UMass, a preseason top-bottom-ten
- 33:10Speaker 1: team that is now 3-0.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Yeah, how about that?
- 33:13Speaker 3: Pop Watson.
- 33:14Speaker 1: It's a conference matchup, despite the schools being 2,940 miles apart.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Imagine a Mid-American conference game in which the team's only
- 33:24Speaker 1: chance to see Middle America is if they have a
- 33:26Speaker 1: window seat on the plane.
- 33:27Speaker 3: That's a great line.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Number five, here it is, the NC State Wolf, W-O-O-F,
- 33:33Speaker 2: Wolf Pack.
- 33:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and again, it always brings about the explanation that
- 33:38Speaker 1: this is not one of the 10 worst football teams
- 33:40Speaker 1: in the country, but they land a spot in this
- 33:42Speaker 1: for losing in a most unimaginable or most unimaginable fashion.
- 33:48Speaker 1: So this is the coveted fifth spot is traditionally reserved
- 33:51Speaker 1: for a good team that had a bad day. NC
- 33:55Speaker 1: State was a pretty good team that was having a
- 33:56Speaker 1: pretty good day. before it suddenly turned into a very
- 33:59Speaker 1: bad team that had a day so very bad that
- 34:03Speaker 1: it not only bent the rules of space, time, and
- 34:05Speaker 1: football logic, it most definitely altered the rules of the
- 34:09Speaker 1: coveted fifth spot. Full disclosure, I grew up in Raleigh
- 34:12Speaker 1: as a huge state fan. It's like a lifelong trip
- 34:14Speaker 1: to the dentist. Yeah, that's because of that, in case
- 34:18Speaker 1: you've already forgotten that crazy loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Number four, the Charlotte 0-3ers, not the 49ers, the 0-3ers.
- 34:26Speaker 1: The three years, or sorry, Niners, nearly pulled a longest
- 34:30Speaker 1: losing streak snapped hat trick. Week one, UMass had the
- 34:35Speaker 1: nation's longest drought and beat Rutgers. Week two, Oklahoma State
- 34:38Speaker 1: had the longest drought and beat Oregon. Week three, Charlotte
- 34:42Speaker 1: had the longest drought and almost beat App State. Number two,
- 34:47Speaker 1: ULM pronounced ohm, oh and three, ohm. The Hawks hosted
- 34:53Speaker 1: their first ohm. home game of the season, welcoming in
- 34:57Speaker 1: the Southeastern Louisiana Lions. I noticed this score Saturday. Who
- 35:02Speaker 1: earned their first win over an FBS team since reinstating
- 35:07Speaker 1: the football program in 2003 following an 18-year hiatus snapping
- 35:12Speaker 1: in 0 for 35 streak. That's embarrassing that they lost.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Remember the Southland Conference. ULM used to be in the Southland.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Number two, Boiling Green. It's the Bowling Boiling Green at 0-3.
- 35:27Speaker 1: The Brown Falcons surrendered a 100-yard kickoff return for a
- 35:31Speaker 1: touchdown by Iowa State's Cameron Petaway. Petaway's previous personal best
- 35:36Speaker 1: for a kick return was a 98-yard touchdown dash one
- 35:39Speaker 1: year ago when he played for Bowling Green.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Tough, tough.
- 35:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 35:45Speaker 1: And the number one in the bottom 10 is Northern
- 35:49Speaker 1: Ill Ugg Noise 0-3.
- 35:52Speaker 2: The other Huskies.
- 35:54Speaker 1: backed up their loss to fcs illinois state by losing
- 35:58Speaker 1: in arizona 42 17 in a game in which quarterback
- 36:01Speaker 1: no one to feed up accounted for five touchdowns and
- 36:05Speaker 1: became the wildcats all-time passing leader it was the worst
- 36:07Speaker 1: beat down scene in tucson since they shot tombstone at
- 36:11Speaker 1: old tucson studios so there's your bottom 10 for the
- 36:16Speaker 1: week so expertly pinned uh by the great ryan mcgee
- 36:21Speaker 1: okay uh Let's go back to teams that are not
- 36:24Speaker 1: bottom 10, namely starting with the Longhorns. Raheem Biles, their
- 36:30Speaker 1: outstanding linebacker, was asked about what it's like to step into. Remember,
- 36:34Speaker 1: he played at Pitt and had played in the ACC.
- 36:37Speaker 1: What it's like stepping in the loud road environments.
- 36:39Speaker 5: It's exciting. I like road games. It's just loud.
- 36:44Speaker 10: You've got a whole bunch of people going against you.
- 36:46Speaker 10: You've got to prove who you are. You've got to
- 36:48Speaker 10: stay connected as a team. So it's going to be
- 36:50Speaker 10: a test, but I feel like it's going to be fun.
- 36:52Speaker 2: So he likes road games. What does he like most
- 36:54Speaker 2: about road games?
- 36:55Speaker 5: Just the atmosphere, really.
- 36:56Speaker 10: You just got a whole bunch of fans going against you.
- 36:59Speaker 10: And like I said, just going to really show who
- 37:00Speaker 10: you are as a team. So like the connectivity, show
- 37:04Speaker 10: the togetherness that we've been training with since January.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Not lost on Biles is the fact that the road
- 37:10Speaker 1: games kind of draw the team closer together.
- 37:13Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely.
- 37:13Speaker 10: Because obviously it's us versus the world in those environments.
- 37:16Speaker 10: It's going to be A whole bunch of fans going
- 37:19Speaker 10: against us, a whole bunch of students going against us,
- 37:21Speaker 10: and we just got to stay together.
- 37:23Speaker 1: You know, there's a lot of fans around college football
- 37:26Speaker 1: kind of view Texas in the villain prism. After all,
- 37:28Speaker 1: they are the number one team in the country and
- 37:30Speaker 1: all that stuff. So does he mind or does he
- 37:33Speaker 1: want to be the villain?
- 37:34Speaker 5: I mean, I don't ever want to be the villain.
- 37:36Speaker 10: I just want to be him for real. I just
- 37:38Speaker 10: want to go win the game and just embrace the moment.
- 37:43Speaker 5: Okay.
- 37:43Speaker 4: All right.
- 37:45Speaker 1: So if he's embracing the moment, that means he's embracing
- 37:49Speaker 1: the hate right.
- 37:52Speaker 5: Maybe if you.
- 37:52Speaker 10: Scroll on social media but around here nah not at
- 37:56Speaker 10: all it's a big family but maybe like i said
- 37:58Speaker 10: if you scroll on social media you might see some
- 38:00Speaker 10: some things but i'll try to not to be on
- 38:03Speaker 10: it's really be on twitter instagram not so much but
- 38:05Speaker 10: really on twitter you might see some things yeah other
- 38:08Speaker 10: than that not for real yeah you.
- 38:09Speaker 1: Do see some of that so these this is one
- 38:11Speaker 1: of those marquee games does he enjoy these.
- 38:13Speaker 10: It's been amazing like This is what I've been dreaming
- 38:16Speaker 10: of since I was a little kid growing up watching
- 38:17Speaker 10: these type of games. So now that I just get
- 38:20Speaker 10: to play in these games and get to really be
- 38:22Speaker 10: like a big part and a big factor into these games,
- 38:25Speaker 10: it's amazing.
- 38:26Speaker 5: I'm just taking it one day at a time.
- 38:27Speaker 2: It's going to be very noisy, very loud as well.
- 38:31Speaker 1: How much does the noise actually impact the game?
- 38:34Speaker 10: I think it got a pretty big effect on the game.
- 38:36Speaker 10: I would say it'll have the biggest impact on just
- 38:40Speaker 10: like communication, like from the second level to the linebackers
- 38:44Speaker 10: to the, D-line, but we've been repping our communication since
- 38:53Speaker 10: really the wintertime, since we've been just learning the defense
- 38:56Speaker 10: and stuff. So I would just say we just got
- 38:58Speaker 10: to go out there and just be ourselves and just
- 39:00Speaker 10: get on the same page and just execute for.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Real, for real.
- 39:03Speaker 1: You know, it can be theorized or even argued that
- 39:06Speaker 1: the Longhorns have, after the Texas State game, that they
- 39:10Speaker 1: really haven't put together a complete game yet at least
- 39:14Speaker 1: not the last two ball games does Biles see it similarly.
- 39:17Speaker 10: Definitely don't feel like we just put a whole game
- 39:19Speaker 10: together to be honest just like with all three phases
- 39:21Speaker 10: it's like when you go review the film like you
- 39:24Speaker 10: can just always see things for improvement but I think
- 39:27Speaker 10: that's the best thing about us. Like we've been with
- 39:31Speaker 10: 3-0 and we still ain't been able to play a
- 39:33Speaker 10: full game yet. And I feel like we still got
- 39:36Speaker 10: a whole lot of steps to take. So that's just
- 39:38Speaker 10: going to be great when we really do put it
- 39:41Speaker 10: all together and we showcase that. It's going to be
- 39:44Speaker 10: very hard to stop us.
- 39:45Speaker 1: All right. And we've been hearing Sark talk about third
- 39:50Speaker 1: down defense and it's got to be better.
- 39:52Speaker 2: That's got to be improved. That's something they continue to
- 39:54Speaker 2: work on.
- 39:55Speaker 10: Coaches told us it was last in the SEC and
- 39:57Speaker 10: third down. So we just took it among ourselves. We
- 40:01Speaker 10: got off the field on third down. So we gave
- 40:04Speaker 10: up one. obviously but after that we really keyed in
- 40:07Speaker 10: on it and we fixed it.
- 40:08Speaker 1: You know what that means that means that will mush
- 40:11Speaker 1: champs gonna have a little extra emphasis with those guys
- 40:14Speaker 1: this week in practice.
- 40:15Speaker 10: Well we still got a lot of a lot of
- 40:16Speaker 10: things to improve on a lot of things to clean
- 40:18Speaker 10: up obviously we got better on third down but we're
- 40:21Speaker 10: gonna play a tougher opponent and tougher stadium this weekend
- 40:25Speaker 10: so it's really just we just got the key in
- 40:26Speaker 10: on us and just we just can't let texas beat
- 40:29Speaker 10: texas for real.
- 40:29Speaker 1: For real All right, and then one, and this one
- 40:31Speaker 1: about Tennessee, we're going to hear some more next hour
- 40:34Speaker 1: from Biles with some specifics on the volunteers, but he
- 40:37Speaker 1: was asked about Tennessee's personnel and what he sees there
- 40:41Speaker 1: and what he feels might be the keys to the game.
- 40:43Speaker 5: Yeah, they obviously got the good back.
- 40:45Speaker 10: They got some good linemen, got some nice tight ends,
- 40:49Speaker 10: but it's really just going to come down to who's
- 40:51Speaker 10: more physical, who's more sound, who's in their gaps, who's
- 40:55Speaker 10: not in their gaps.
- 40:57Speaker 5: I feel like We just got to out-physical them and.
- 41:00Speaker 10: Just be dialed in on the keys we get, the
- 41:04Speaker 10: tips we get, and just watch film for real, for real.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Okay.
- 41:08Speaker 1: Coming up, that's for real, for real, he was saying there,
- 41:11Speaker 1: in case you're wondering exactly what he.
- 41:12Speaker 5: Was saying there.
- 41:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:14Speaker 3: Nothing fake about Heme Biles.
- 41:15Speaker 4: No.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Up next, we hear from the head coaches, from Longhorn's
- 41:19Speaker 1: head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, and also... Josh Heupel, the head
- 41:23Speaker 1: coach of the Tennessee Volunteers. That was from just a
- 41:25Speaker 1: little while ago they had on the SEC teleconference.
- 41:28Speaker 2: That's next on 13 Under the Zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 41:39Speaker 11: He was something to observe Came in close, I heard
- 41:47Speaker 11: a voice Standing, stretching every nerve I had to listen,
- 41:53Speaker 11: had no choice I did not believe the information Just
- 42:00Speaker 11: out of trust, imagination.
- 42:05Speaker 12: Here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday, the great Peter Gabriel,
- 42:15Speaker 12: Salisbury Hill.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Time to hear from the head coaches.
- 42:21Speaker 1: First of all, Longwood's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, did an
- 42:25Speaker 1: SEC teleconference.
- 42:26Speaker 2: I'm always amused by the fact that it's still.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Called the SEC teleconference.
- 42:33Speaker 2: They're not on a telephone. Used to be. I go back,
- 42:38Speaker 2: might be at the Southwest Conference.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Coaches call, it would call, which would make more sense
- 42:41Speaker 1: now to call that instead, even though the word call
- 42:44Speaker 1: has got weird. Where you would dial into a number
- 42:48Speaker 1: and you would hear the coach and you hear the
- 42:50Speaker 1: press conference moderator and it would start. They don't do
- 42:52Speaker 1: it by phone anymore. They do it by Zoom, which
- 42:55Speaker 1: we're glad of in the radio business because it makes
- 42:58Speaker 1: the sound quality better. But it's still called the teleconference.
- 43:01Speaker 1: So on the teleconference this morning, First, some opening thoughts
- 43:05Speaker 1: from Steve Sarkeesian.
- 43:07Speaker 13: Yeah, heck of a challenge here to kick off SEC play. Obviously,
- 43:12Speaker 13: going into Neyland Stadium, college game day there, a very
- 43:18Speaker 13: kind of young and talented Tennessee team, but at the
- 43:21Speaker 13: same time, great experience with the coordinators, obviously with Coach
- 43:25Speaker 13: Heupel on the offensive side of the ball and Coach
- 43:28Speaker 13: Knowles on the defensive side of the ball.
- 43:31Speaker 7: So talented team, tough environment.
- 43:33Speaker 13: We know it's going to take all three phases for
- 43:35Speaker 13: four quarters to try to be successful.
- 43:37Speaker 7: So looking forward to the opportunity.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Both these offenses are described when they are really hitting
- 43:44Speaker 1: on all cylinders as being up-tempo and quick strike and
- 43:52Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. And he was asked, does
- 43:53Speaker 1: he see similarities in his offense to what Josh Heupel
- 43:57Speaker 1: is running at Tennessee?
- 43:59Speaker 13: I mean, I think there's always some schematics that are similar.
- 44:02Speaker 13: I think foundationally we're probably different. But at the end
- 44:07Speaker 13: of the day, you know, good schemes and good plays
- 44:10Speaker 13: are good plays.
- 44:11Speaker 4: They're just that.
- 44:12Speaker 13: And so we all kind of at some point can
- 44:15Speaker 13: you can look similar at times.
- 44:18Speaker 7: But I think philosophically.
- 44:20Speaker 13: You know, I think we both understand, you know, running
- 44:23Speaker 13: the football is a great way to start to set
- 44:25Speaker 13: up some of the things you want to do in
- 44:26Speaker 13: the passing game. And, you know, he's been doing it
- 44:29Speaker 13: a long time, has been very successful.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Next, who's asking what stands out to him about the
- 44:34Speaker 1: Tennessee defense?
- 44:35Speaker 7: Well, I think that they've obviously got a heck of
- 44:38Speaker 7: a scheme.
- 44:38Speaker 13: You know, as I touched on, I've got a ton
- 44:40Speaker 13: of respect for Jim Knowles and his ability to, highlight
- 44:44Speaker 13: his best players and put those playmakers in position to
- 44:48Speaker 13: be successful. Arian Carter, definitely being one of those players,
- 44:52Speaker 13: you know, he's a, in my opinion, I refer to
- 44:55Speaker 13: him as a three level player. You know, he can,
- 44:57Speaker 13: when he blitzes, he's effective at disrupting your pass protection.
- 45:02Speaker 13: He's a very good run defender and he's obviously very
- 45:04Speaker 13: effective in pass coverage. And so when you can find
- 45:07Speaker 13: linebackers that can do all three That's what really makes
- 45:10Speaker 13: him special. And he's definitely one of those types of
- 45:13Speaker 13: guys that can do that.
- 45:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 45:15Speaker 1: A short question deserves a short answer. Coach, got any
- 45:17Speaker 1: memories of Neyland?
- 45:18Speaker 7: Oh, it's loud. Very loud place.
- 45:22Speaker 2: That's from his time on the Alabama staff.
- 45:25Speaker 1: He was also asked about having a deal with Deshaun
- 45:29Speaker 1: Bishop and the.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Development of Oh, no, this is about Jermaine Bishop.
- 45:36Speaker 9: That's right.
- 45:36Speaker 1: I was looking at Bishop and looking at the Tennessee
- 45:38Speaker 1: running back. Jermaine Bishop, the development of the freshman, Jermaine Bishop. And,
- 45:43Speaker 1: you know, he played all over the field when he
- 45:45Speaker 1: was at Willis. wide receiver DB, kick returner, did all
- 45:49Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. Does Sark see him primarily and
- 45:53Speaker 1: perhaps even solely.
- 45:55Speaker 2: As an offensive player?
- 45:56Speaker 7: Yeah, he's on the offensive side of the ball right now.
- 45:58Speaker 13: I would never rule out that his days on defense
- 46:02Speaker 13: are over because he's got a skill set that can
- 46:04Speaker 13: do that. I think it's difficult as a true freshman
- 46:07Speaker 13: trying to do both sides of the ball at the
- 46:09Speaker 13: same time. That's why we've kind of compartmentalized Spring ball,
- 46:13Speaker 13: he was on offense.
- 46:14Speaker 7: In the summer, he was on defense.
- 46:16Speaker 13: And training camp in the first part of the season,
- 46:18Speaker 13: he was back on offense. So we'll monitor that as
- 46:21Speaker 13: we go. But he's developing.
- 46:22Speaker 7: He's a good young.
- 46:23Speaker 13: Player that is finding a role on offense and on
- 46:26Speaker 13: special teams.
- 46:27Speaker 4: All right.
- 46:27Speaker 1: That's Sark from the SEC teleconference. Before we hear from
- 46:31Speaker 1: Josh Heupel, we have a talkback from a listener.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Yeah, this actually came in late during yesterday's show. We
- 46:38Speaker 3: didn't have time to get to it. But here is
- 46:41Speaker 3: Matt in Cleburne.
- 46:42Speaker 6: All right.
- 46:44Speaker 4: This is Matt in Cleburne, Texas.
- 46:48Speaker 14: First of all, I love Sark's play-calling abilities, and I
- 46:53Speaker 14: like the way that he calls plays.
- 46:56Speaker 7: One thing that I.
- 46:57Speaker 14: Would like to see different, though, is the first offensive
- 47:01Speaker 14: play of every game not be a wide receiver bubble screen,
- 47:06Speaker 14: because it seems the teams have caught on to that.
- 47:11Speaker 1: Okay.
- 47:12Speaker 5: All right.
- 47:14Speaker 1: I wasn't sure they'd done that in all three games.
- 47:16Speaker 1: I was thinking there was a running play and more.
- 47:19Speaker 3: They started with a run against Texas State.
- 47:21Speaker 1: That's what I remember there. But your point is well
- 47:26Speaker 1: taken there. Coaches obviously want to avoid predictability. But again,
- 47:30Speaker 1: that stuff is going to depend a lot on the defensive.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Looks they're getting.
- 47:34Speaker 1: As Sark scripts out those first 15 or 20 plays,
- 47:38Speaker 1: a lot of it will depend, Matt, on what the
- 47:42Speaker 1: defensive look is.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Is going to be.
- 47:45Speaker 1: And Arch does have the green light to check to
- 47:48Speaker 1: a different play if he sees that it doesn't look
- 47:53Speaker 1: right from that deal.
- 47:54Speaker 2: But appreciate the talk back on that.
- 47:57Speaker 1: All right, now from Josh Heupel, the Tennessee head coach
- 48:01Speaker 1: asked for his thoughts on getting ready for this matchup.
- 48:08Speaker 8: Yeah, good afternoon, everyone. Excited to go open up conference
- 48:13Speaker 8: play here. at home with, uh, with our football team,
- 48:17Speaker 8: a great opportunity playing a great opponent in, uh, in Texas,
- 48:21Speaker 8: a ton of respect, uh, for that program and, uh,
- 48:25Speaker 8: understand the quality of the opponent, uh, the experience, uh,
- 48:29Speaker 8: that they have on really, uh, every side of the
- 48:32Speaker 8: football and, uh, the way that you have to play to,
- 48:36Speaker 8: to give yourself a chance to.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Win in this one.
- 48:37Speaker 8: But, uh, it'll be a great environment and look forward
- 48:40Speaker 8: to going and competing.
- 48:41Speaker 4: With our guys. All right.
- 48:42Speaker 1: You heard, uh, uh, Sark say about Neyland when they
- 48:46Speaker 1: asked for his memories is loud places, very loud.
- 48:48Speaker 2: What makes Neyland so loud?
- 48:51Speaker 8: Yeah, I think it starts just with the passion of our,
- 48:53Speaker 8: our fan base. Um, you know, the, it's a, it's
- 48:58Speaker 8: a great stadium. Um, you know, 360, there's nowhere for the,
- 49:02Speaker 8: the noise to get out of, but, uh, our fan
- 49:05Speaker 8: base is passionate. Um, I understand football and, You know,
- 49:09Speaker 8: they show up in a great way every Saturday afternoon
- 49:12Speaker 8: or evening, whatever it is.
- 49:13Speaker 5: And I think that's where it really starts.
- 49:16Speaker 1: You know, a lot of folks wondered, you know, why
- 49:18Speaker 1: didn't Arch Manning? wind up where his uncle Peyton played, Tennessee?
- 49:24Speaker 1: And so as a result of that, Josh Hypa was asked,
- 49:27Speaker 1: you know, what does he recall about the experience when
- 49:30Speaker 1: they were going through in their attempts to recruit Arch
- 49:34Speaker 1: Manning to Tennessee?
- 49:35Speaker 8: Yeah, it was just, it was the beginning stages of
- 49:38Speaker 8: when we initially got here to Tennessee as a staff.
- 49:43Speaker 8: And so, you know, I talked to him, we talked
- 49:46Speaker 8: to him, you know, a few times, but it had
- 49:50Speaker 8: moved pretty quickly, you know, where he had kind of
- 49:54Speaker 8: narrowed it down. But, you know, I've known different members
- 49:58Speaker 8: of their family for a long time. Peyton and their dad,
- 50:03Speaker 8: a ton of respect for that family. Obviously, you can
- 50:07Speaker 8: look at the success of them as quarterbacks, but just
- 50:10Speaker 8: who they are as people, they're as good as they get.
- 50:13Speaker 5: Okay.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Next, he was asked about his.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Recruiting philosophy because the question he got was about Faison
- 50:24Speaker 1: Brandon's recruitment and He's a freshman, and they've had some freshmen,
- 50:27Speaker 1: but the question was more about, boy, you really seem
- 50:30Speaker 1: to lean into the freshmen and development and not go
- 50:32Speaker 1: through the portal.
- 50:33Speaker 2: And Heupel said.
- 50:36Speaker 1: That's not entirely true on that, but he was asked
- 50:39Speaker 1: about his recruiting philosophy.
- 50:41Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, we've had portal guys that have been
- 50:44Speaker 8: our starters. You look at Hendon and Joe, and those
- 50:49Speaker 8: guys came from the portal this past, pass cycle was
- 50:54Speaker 8: a unique cycle with a lot of different things at play.
- 50:57Speaker 8: Recruited a couple portal guys and then obviously Joey didn't
- 51:04Speaker 8: get another year in the court system. But I love
- 51:09Speaker 8: the guys that we got in the room. Faison's played
- 51:12Speaker 8: really well here at the start, taking good care of
- 51:15Speaker 8: the football and we'll have to play well on Saturday.
- 51:19Speaker 1: Alright, so here we are with the ninth game being
- 51:22Speaker 1: added to the SEC schedule. So against that backdrop, what
- 51:28Speaker 1: does Hypo feel the odds are that an SEC team
- 51:30Speaker 1: can run the table and go nine and O in
- 51:33Speaker 1: conference play?
- 51:33Speaker 8: I think another game adds, uh, another loss to, uh,
- 51:37Speaker 8: to half the league, but, uh, you know, ultimately, um,
- 51:41Speaker 8: to run the table is extremely difficult.
- 51:44Speaker 7: Um, but, um, certainly not, uh, undoable either.
- 51:48Speaker 8: But, uh, um, I think there is great, uh, I
- 51:50Speaker 8: don't know, uh, parody, uh, for lack of a better word,
- 51:55Speaker 8: maybe just the quality of this league from top to bottom. Um,
- 52:01Speaker 8: you know, the, the players that are in the league, um,
- 52:04Speaker 8: you know, in particular, the defensive fronts that you see
- 52:07Speaker 8: every Saturday, um, and then, uh, you know, road games
- 52:11Speaker 8: in this league, there, there are no, um, I don't know,
- 52:14Speaker 8: easy venues to play in. Uh, it's a passionate fan
- 52:17Speaker 8: bases that, uh, make a road game a true road game.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Okay, how about his thoughts of what he saw on
- 52:25Speaker 1: video of Texas and that comeback win over Ohio State?
- 52:28Speaker 8: Yeah, I think you ultimately got to play four quarters
- 52:30Speaker 8: in this league every Saturday. You know, you just, you
- 52:35Speaker 8: got to have a next play mentality and certainly Texas's
- 52:40Speaker 8: ability to come back against a really good opponent. When
- 52:45Speaker 8: you're down multiple scores, it hasn't been going great to
- 52:48Speaker 8: be able to piece it and put it together in
- 52:52Speaker 8: the fourth quarter tells you about, you know, who they
- 52:56Speaker 8: are internally, you know, competitive composure and mental toughness and
- 53:02Speaker 8: how they're going to continue to play. So you certainly
- 53:04Speaker 8: understand that if you have an opportunity, you got to
- 53:06Speaker 8: go finish them. But you know, you just, when you,
- 53:12Speaker 8: throw on the tape of these guys talking about Texas.
- 53:17Speaker 8: I think, you know, the line of scrimmage, their physicality,
- 53:21Speaker 8: their length, and that's really on both sides of the
- 53:25Speaker 8: line of scrimmage, offensively and defensively, what you see from them.
- 53:29Speaker 5: And like always, it's been a while since I.
- 53:32Speaker 8: Played Texas, but always historically I've had great athletes, and
- 53:37Speaker 8: you can see that at all of their skilled positions
- 53:39Speaker 8: on both sides of the ball.
- 53:40Speaker 1: It's interesting how he says it's been a while since
- 53:42Speaker 1: he's played Texas. Remember, he was the quarterback of that
- 53:44Speaker 1: Oklahoma team that beat the Longhorns in 2000 and were
- 53:46Speaker 1: out to winning the national championship. And then one other
- 53:53Speaker 1: thing that he was asked about, had to do with
- 53:59Speaker 1: his offense and how similar or dissimilar it is to
- 54:07Speaker 1: those other ones, whether it's the veer and shoot that
- 54:11Speaker 1: Art Bryles had the influence or Mike Leach. And he
- 54:13Speaker 1: was asked about that particular type of influence. And his,
- 54:19Speaker 1: the growth of his offense and that Art Bryles coaching
- 54:23Speaker 1: tree over the years, Mike Levy, uh, excuse me, uh, uh,
- 54:27Speaker 1: Jeff Levy, the coach at Mississippi state, son of Mike Levy,
- 54:29Speaker 1: the longtime coach, high school coach in Texas, Jeff Levy,
- 54:32Speaker 1: that coaching tree as well.
- 54:34Speaker 8: Every tree or, you know, branch, whatever, uh, that, uh,
- 54:38Speaker 8: that you come from, uh, You know, everyone's going to
- 54:41Speaker 8: put their own spin on it and it's going to
- 54:44Speaker 8: continue to grow and evolve. You know, first and foremost,
- 54:47Speaker 8: just because of the personnel that you have, you know,
- 54:49Speaker 8: your quarterback, your skill guys, you know, tight ends, whatever
- 54:52Speaker 8: it might be. And you try to put your guys
- 54:55Speaker 8: in a position to to be successful. And, you know,
- 54:59Speaker 8: I've been around, you know, played played for Mike Leach.
- 55:03Speaker 8: And so there's still, you know, principles and plays. things
- 55:06Speaker 8: that we do that, uh, that date all the way
- 55:08Speaker 8: back to, to some of those things that I experienced
- 55:11Speaker 8: as a player too.
- 55:12Speaker 4: Okay.
- 55:12Speaker 5: All right.
- 55:13Speaker 4: Uh, there you go.
- 55:14Speaker 5: Uh, all right.
- 55:15Speaker 1: Up next, uh, we will, uh, turn to pro football and, uh,
- 55:21Speaker 1: we'll hear some, uh, comments from, uh, D'Amico Ryan's trying
- 55:25Speaker 1: to get things turned around with the Houston Texans this
- 55:27Speaker 1: week when we continue on 13 Under the Zone and
- 55:29Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. Well, the Houston Texans don't want to
- 55:33Speaker 1: drift away. They want to be in the fight in
- 55:35Speaker 1: the AFC South. No time like the present to turn
- 55:39Speaker 1: it around. A South Division game against the Indianapolis Colts
- 55:43Speaker 1: coming up on Sunday against another 0-2 team. D'Amico Ryan
- 55:47Speaker 1: was asked, you know, the one thing that they're really lacking,
- 55:52Speaker 1: among other things, is getting takeaways can you just can
- 55:55Speaker 1: you coach it or do they just regularly happen.
- 55:58Speaker 15: We work on taking the ball away in practice a
- 56:00Speaker 15: lot it comes to when that second man is in
- 56:03Speaker 15: when you're a first man they're arriving at the tackle
- 56:05Speaker 15: you want to make sure you secure it first and
- 56:07Speaker 15: foremost and then the second guy who's coming in running
- 56:10Speaker 15: to the football we want them punching at the ball
- 56:13Speaker 15: pulling at it whatever it takes to try to get
- 56:15Speaker 15: the football out right and also you know When we
- 56:18Speaker 15: were there, we had opportunity a couple times in the pocket.
- 56:21Speaker 15: I thought the quarterback did a good job of holding
- 56:22Speaker 15: on to the ball. We had a couple sacks there
- 56:25Speaker 15: where we could have got the ball out.
- 56:27Speaker 4: But, again, he made a good play.
- 56:28Speaker 15: So the ball is on our mind. And, you know,
- 56:32Speaker 15: they say turnovers kind of come in bunches. So we're
- 56:35Speaker 15: ready for the bunches to start rolling our way.
- 56:38Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 56:40Speaker 1: Are there things that are on the video coming off
- 56:43Speaker 1: the loss last Sunday to Cincinnati that he can work on?
- 56:47Speaker 15: Oh for sure there are a lot of great things
- 56:49Speaker 15: to build on from you know such a disappointing loss
- 56:52Speaker 15: but there are always a ton of things to improve
- 56:55Speaker 15: on just from us coaching perspective and players like just
- 56:59Speaker 15: staying connected when we line up on Sundays right are
- 57:04Speaker 15: we doing what we've coached right are we calling what
- 57:08Speaker 15: we've coached all week are we actually executing it how
- 57:11Speaker 15: we said we were going to do it. So it's
- 57:14Speaker 15: just ties hand in hand for us as coaches and
- 57:17Speaker 15: players to make sure we're as connected on game day
- 57:19Speaker 15: and we're doing all the things that we've trained all week.
- 57:22Speaker 15: So there are a few plays out there that we
- 57:24Speaker 15: had opportunities to capitalize on and make some plays from
- 57:29Speaker 15: offensive perspective, also special teams and defense. All three phases
- 57:33Speaker 15: had opportunities to capitalize and make big plays and we
- 57:37Speaker 15: missed the mark a little bit.
- 57:39Speaker 1: Next, the run game or lack thereof. run blocking, the
- 57:43Speaker 1: lack thereof. How about his level of concern over those things?
- 57:46Speaker 15: To start, he had to give credit to the Bengals
- 57:49Speaker 15: defensive line. They're a really good defensive line. They did
- 57:53Speaker 15: a really good job. It's not easy blocking those guys,
- 57:57Speaker 15: and so I give credit to their defense.
- 57:59Speaker 5: They did a really good job stopping it.
- 58:02Speaker 15: We got to stay with it, stay committed to the
- 58:04Speaker 15: run game, find different ways, different avenues to find some
- 58:07Speaker 15: yards in the run game, but My hat goes off
- 58:10Speaker 15: to those guys.
- 58:11Speaker 4: They outplayed us.
- 58:12Speaker 2: Okay. Can he use the tight ends more in his offense?
- 58:17Speaker 15: We can definitely utilize our tight ends a little bit
- 58:21Speaker 15: more to try to mix it in. Sometimes you get
- 58:24Speaker 15: into the flow of the game, I think, and you
- 58:26Speaker 15: end up being down. We end up probably going a
- 58:28Speaker 15: little more 11 personnel than was expected, sometimes just the
- 58:31Speaker 15: flow of the game. You can plan the game one
- 58:33Speaker 15: way accordingly, but Sometimes you get in situations and it
- 58:36Speaker 15: dictates something different when it comes to a personnel standpoint.
- 58:39Speaker 15: So it's not from a. a matter of lack of
- 58:41Speaker 15: preparation and preparing for the multiple tight end groups is
- 58:44Speaker 15: just how the flow of the game went.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Okay, all right.
- 58:47Speaker 1: With Nico Collins, you know, hobbled and unable to go
- 58:50Speaker 1: last week and Keyshawn Boutte being pressed in the.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Service, what about Jalen Noel?
- 58:55Speaker 1: What can they do to get Jalen Noel more involved?
- 59:00Speaker 1: How can he continue to kind of grow his role
- 59:02Speaker 1: a little bit?
- 59:03Speaker 4: Yeah, we all have a lot to work on. Coach,
- 59:05Speaker 4: his player, we all have a lot to work on.
- 59:07Speaker 15: It's not good enough, and I think it's easy to
- 59:10Speaker 15: sit back and kind of nitpick, hey, what didn't go wrong? J.
- 59:13Speaker 15: Noel got one big explosive on the pass, did another
- 59:17Speaker 15: good job on the jet sweep. J. Noel's done a
- 59:20Speaker 15: great job. He improved in the punt return area, did
- 59:23Speaker 15: a really good job of being decisive as a punt returner,
- 59:26Speaker 15: so I thought J. Noel took a huge step this
- 59:29Speaker 15: past week and he got better for our football team
- 59:31Speaker 15: and he put us in position to have some opportunities
- 59:34Speaker 15: to go score all right as we continue to build
- 59:37Speaker 15: off of what he's shown we'll continue to see how
- 59:40Speaker 15: that role continues to thrive.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Okay and then finally um is there a specific message
- 59:45Speaker 1: and what would that be to his team after this
- 59:48Speaker 1: 0-2 start.
- 59:49Speaker 15: The message is that we just have to be connected
- 59:52Speaker 15: like again i think it's too many for me it's
- 59:54Speaker 15: too many times taped with the coaches and players, like
- 59:58Speaker 15: what we're expecting to happen. We just got to make
- 1:00:01Speaker 15: sure we buckle down, make sure we coach it better.
- 1:00:04Speaker 15: First and foremost, I got to coach it better. Hey,
- 1:00:07Speaker 15: I coach it better. We play, play a little bit better,
- 1:00:10Speaker 15: strain a little bit longer and find a way to
- 1:00:11Speaker 15: finish the football game.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: There it is from the head coach, D'Amico Ryans. We'll
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: be back to wrap up our number two of the
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: program right here on Sports Radio AM 13 under the
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: zone at EIR Radio app.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Heading toward the top of the hour.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: Before we get there, a whole bunch has been made
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: out of this business.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: And it's unfortunate it is.
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: But because of what happened last week with Arch Manning
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: and the laughing at the AI video and the criticism
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: and back and forth and folks.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Excuse me on that. Allergy cough there. Folks that were really.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: With what the media did in terms of their depiction
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: of all of this. Paul Feinbaum was asked about this,
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: and he put it into this particular context.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: Sweet.
- 1:01:10Speaker 6: Sure, in the break there, this is Bob Ballew, some
- 1:01:12Speaker 6: Arch Manning stats. Saturday, five questions, 20 seconds of answers. Monday,
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: 19 questions, 56 seconds. Seth Golden saying, Arch is a
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: personality that really shows it on camera. And after the
- 1:01:24Speaker 6: Holly Roe controversy, the short answers have gotten even shorter.
- 1:01:28Speaker 6: So I just want to say something here. This is
- 1:01:32Speaker 6: a friend of mine, but I'm with Arch. Arch made
- 1:01:36Speaker 6: fools out of everybody in that room because they helped
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: make him look like a fool last week with the
- 1:01:41Speaker 6: Holly Roe situation. They all laughed, and he took all
- 1:01:45Speaker 6: the heat. The bottom line is, I say this to
- 1:01:47Speaker 6: any media member, don't criticize Arch. subject if you ask
- 1:01:51Speaker 6: stupid and bogus questions, which I heard on most of those.
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: If you ask Arch Manning a pertinent question, maybe he
- 1:01:59Speaker 6: will answer them.
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: If you don't sit there like a bunch of.
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: Fanboys drooling over his sweat, then maybe he'll give something
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: back in return.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: But I didn't hear anything from the media there. And
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: why bother? I mean, that's the problem.
- 1:02:14Speaker 6: And I know a lot of my colleagues are probably
- 1:02:16Speaker 6: not happy to hear me say this.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: But things have changed.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: Guys like Arch Manning.
- 1:02:21Speaker 6: Do not need the local yokels in the media. He
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: can reach millions of people with one Instagram post. He
- 1:02:30Speaker 6: can reach millions of people by doing something more than
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: sitting there and listening to a bunch of dumb questions
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: from the local media who look like a pack of
- 1:02:39Speaker 6: wolves trying to get some meat at feeding.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: Blunt.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: And to the point. There it is.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Let me just say this. I wasn't there when that happened.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: I had already left, but I know what that scene
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: is like in there. And the vast majority of the
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: people who were in that press conference on a weekly
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: basis are there for upstanding purposes. They're there to work
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: on their pride and they ask legitimate questions. There is
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: an element. And anybody that says there isn't is wrong.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: There is an element in there that's asking those kind
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: of little trap questions or little gotcha questions. An example
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: of that was about the whole real UT thing.
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: That's useless.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: There's no reason for asking those kinds of silly questions.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: And Paul Feinbaum is right about that part. One more
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: hour of the show to go right here on 13
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Under the Zone. Third and final hour of the program
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: here on Sports Radio AM 1300, The Zone, here on
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: a Yacht Rock Wednesday. Dragway joined by the producer, Jake Herman.
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: And we'll get back to some sound. We're going to
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: hear more from Raheem Biles in a few minutes. Also,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, and from Josh Heupel,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: the head coach, of the Tennessee volunteers coming up in, uh,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: just a few moments. Uh, one thing I did want
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: to do, uh, before we get back to the football is, uh,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: just kind of update where things are with the, um,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: baseball post season race, I guess is the best way
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: to describe it because while the American league central and
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: the American league West still really are up for grabs, uh,
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: pretty much everything else, uh, in the divisions are decided. And, um,
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: And now it's about battling for playoff spots. So, first
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: of all, in the National League, one thing to know
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: is that it's a three-way deadlock for... three wildcard spots,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: although the Arizona Diamondbacks are still in the race, but
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: they're four back with five to go. So in all probability,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: despite the Padres getting walloped by the Dodgers last night,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: and despite the Cubs having a sick spot put on
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: them in the top of the 12th after they had
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: ample opportunities to clinch a playoff spot in the late
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: innings and in the first two extra innings against the
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: Marlins and were unable to do it, Those three are
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: probably going to be the ones. Add to that the
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: fact that the Phillies beat the Brewers just adds more
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: intrigue to it. So all three of those teams are
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: 87 and 70. All three of those teams now have
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: five games remaining. And it should be pointed out the
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Cubs own the tiebreaker on both the Phillies and the Padres.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: So that's why their magic number is one. All they
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: have to do is beat the feckless fish one time,
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: you know, beat the Marlins, and then they would have it.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: So it would work out.
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: Survivor fans that are waiting for the show to come
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: back tonight love your use of feckless right there.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Well, you know, I was using that term before Survivor
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: came on, but, you know, I understand that.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: It's a word we don't get to use that much.
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: It just means.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: You just can't do anything about it. You know, you're
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: just not capable. You're not, what's it in Caddyshack? You're
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: not good. You know, it's just not good. I've heard
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: that on the course before.
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: So, you know, there's a three-way tie in the National
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: League wildcard spot. And the Diamondbacks are still one game back. Now,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: here's the one notable thing about this. You say, well,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: the D-backs are four back with five to go. They're
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: not going to catch San Diego. The only thing to
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: keep in mind about that is that right now, Arizona
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: is playing Colorado and San Diego is playing Los Angeles.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: And if you say the Dodgers have already clinched the West,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: they have nothing to play for. Not exactly true. They
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: publicly stated how much they want to get a buy
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: in the first round. Their magic number is one because
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: of the Braves' loss last night and the Los Angeles win.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: And they have Yamamoto going to the mound tonight. So
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: if the Dodgers win or if the Braves lose, they
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: then clinch a first-round buy.
- 1:07:16Speaker 7: Moore's the point.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: They're now only one game back in Milwaukee for the
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: number one overall seed. So that could happen. So they're
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: kind of trying to keep their foot on the gas.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: So there is still something to play for. So the
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Padres are going up against that. And they had what
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: in September had been their best guy, Michael King, going
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: last night. He was 4-0 in his prior four starts.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: And the Dodgers knocked him out in four innings out
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: of that. So we'll see how that goes for San Diego.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: And the other reason why I mention this, they're up
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: four with five to go. So they're in a pretty
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: good spot. Their magic number's two to do it, to
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: clinch a wild card spot. But here's the thing. Colorado,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: I mean, Arizona's playing at Colorado. Certainly not inconceivable to
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: think that they could sweep them. And if the Padres
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: lose again to the Dodgers, let alone if they should
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: lose twice, keep in mind the final series of the
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: season is Arizona at San Diego.
- 1:08:18Speaker 2: That's why it's not done yet.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: And the Cubs and Phillies are still kind of pushing
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: for their spots as well. So we'll see what happens
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: in the National League with that. But in terms of
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: the division races, those are all done in the National League.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: The American League, different issue. The Rangers and Astros continue
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: to fall backward or uphill or however you want to
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: call it because now they're tied for first, five games
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: to go, and they're both a game under.
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: 500.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: I maintain it's entirely possible that we could see the
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: American League League West Division champion have a sub.
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: 500 record.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: I don't think it'll happen simply because of the finishing schedule,
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: but the Rangers look bad in the middle and late
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: innings against the Mets last night who have nothing to
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: play for, and they lost at home to the Mets.
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: But now you've got to face Nolan McClain tonight, who is,
- 1:09:20Speaker 3: despite playing for the Mets, sporting a 3.1 ERA and
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: a winning record this year.
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: So, anyway, there's that. Technically, technically, the Mariners are still alive,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: but just barely. They're five back for five to go
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: in the division. And they're playing the Astros right now. So,
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: but they lost last night, 7-0.
- 1:09:45Speaker 7: So.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: Anyway, that's where that is.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: And their tragic number, if you will, the number to
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: be eliminated is just one. So anyway, that's how that is. Okay,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: so that's where it is with the division. Now, I
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: will also tell you this. Because they keep backpedaling, the
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Rangers and Astros, they're playing their way out of being
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: able to get a wild card spot whoever doesn't win
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: the division. It looks like it's going to come down
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: to win or take all in terms of getting into
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: the postseason at all, and that's going to be for
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: winning the division because the Guardians and White Sox have
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: enough separation. Now it looks like we're going to wrap
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: that up. So here's where it is. The Guardians have
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: a one-game lead on the White Sox. They have two
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: more games in Boston. They won last night. And then
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: they finish at Kansas City. When Gene Watson was on
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: with us last week, he said how the Guardians and
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: White Sox do against the Royals is going to go
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: a long way toward deciding who wins the Central. Because
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: the White Sox won that slugfest with Kansas City. I
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: think it was, what, 14-11 last night? They've got two
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: more in Kansas City. And then the White Sox close
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: with the Rockies. so that's why this is going to
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: be real interesting to see what's going to happen in
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: terms of the American League Central, but it's looking more
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: and more like whichever team does not win the division
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: is going to wind up being that third wild card.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: The Yankees are going to get the top wild card,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: and the Red Sox are going to get the number
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: two wild card out of it, so now you get
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: down to the West with the Astros and Rangers, and
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: both are 78 and 79, and I reiterate this. In
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: the divisional era, since 1969 when they went to division play,
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: no team has ever won its division without having a
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: winning record. The closest was in 2005. The Padres went 82-80.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: But it definitely could happen in the American League West,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: both the Astros and Rangers winning.
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: Sit one game under.
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: 500.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: And because the Astros dominated the season series between the
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: teams and went nine and four with a plus 23
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: run differential against Texas, they have the inside track on
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: what would be their eighth division title in a 10-year span.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: Rangers haven't finished first in 10 years. They haven't won
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: a division in 2016. Even when they won the World
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: Series three years ago, they were a wild card that year.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: Remember when it collapsed late and then Houston's like, I
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: guess we'll never know.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: They had the smart aleck comment.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: And then when the Rangers won, they came back with,
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: I guess we'll never know, you know, to the Astros.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: Rangers had to do it the hard way. It's a
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: wild card. They went to Tampa. They had Baltimore. And
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: then they beat the Astros in the rematch and then
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: beat the Diamondbacks to win the whole thing. Houston mostly
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: has been on top since the beginning of August. Rangers
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: had a brief one-game lead over the weekend. But now
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: that's where it stands right now. So the Yankees and
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: Red Sox are in as wild cards. Either the White
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: Sox or Guardians in all probability. I mean, there's still
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: a mathematical shot that whoever doesn't win the American League
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: West could be a wild card, but it's a lot
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: of heavy-duty math at this point. It's pretty much whoever
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: doesn't win the Central, Guardians, or White Sox is going
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: to be that third wild card. And by the way,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: you know what the third wild card means? It means
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: you're going to play that American League West winner.
- 1:13:21Speaker 9: Right.
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: It's huge.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: It's huge.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: I could watch the Guardians play the White Sox every
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: week down the stretch. That series was so much fun.
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: And as a neutral, as far as the American League
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: is concerned... I'm really happy that we're probably going to
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: see both of them in the playoffs.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Yep, I think we are. So anyway, that's just to
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: get you up to speed on that.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: By the way, entering today, Baltimore and Toronto also had
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: shots at the wild card. And they're having to play
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: a doubleheader. They got rained out last night in Charm City.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: So they're having to play two today in Baltimore.
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: And the Orioles made it split admission, which in some
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: of my circles has drawn ire.
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: Yeah. Made what?
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: They made the doubleheader split admission. Yes, split admission.
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: Yes, that's right. Day, night, charge for both.
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: Come on, guys. It wasn't enough to sell Adley Rutschman
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: at the deadline.
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: Yeah, guess not. So they play the early game, come back,
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: charge for the later game.
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: So I just wanted to get everybody up to speed
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: on that, you know, with regard to the baseball postseason.
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: Let's go back to the Longhorns. And I want to
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: hear some more from Raheem Biles. So this, you know,
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: this matchup with Tennessee, it's always said that it's going
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: to be physical in the SEC. So clearly Raheem and
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: the other guys are expecting a physical matchup in this one.
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: Oh, this game is going to be exciting for sure.
- 1:14:46Speaker 10: Like our coach, coach Nansen, obviously it's good to have
- 1:14:49Speaker 10: him back, but he's just been talking about it.
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: Like this is going to be just a physical game.
- 1:14:53Speaker 10: Like obviously they almost with 298 rushing yards, almost 300
- 1:14:57Speaker 10: rushing yards. So It ain't going to be too much
- 1:14:59Speaker 10: running around. They're going to be trying to grind the
- 1:15:01Speaker 10: ball down our throat. We just got to man up
- 1:15:04Speaker 10: and stop it.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, so that's one thing.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: Now, what the Longhorns have been able to do is
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: see opposing teams' fans coming to the games in Austin
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: leave early because Texas had the game in command.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: Now, that was not the case with Ohio State.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: I did tell a story about some folks running into
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: Ohio State fans who were leaving when it was 23-3
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: early in the fourth quarter.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: Going, yeah, we got this in hand, and then obviously
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: the script flipped.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: But by and large, it's been like, whatever, the Texas
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: State fans and the UTSA fans that were leaving when
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: Texas had the issue in hand. Obviously, the Longhorns are
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: trying to avoid that from happening with their own fans
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: on the road in Knoxville, but he was asked about
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: the feeling they get when other teams' fans leave the
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: stadium early.
- 1:15:50Speaker 10: I mean, it's exciting, but obviously the game is never
- 1:15:53Speaker 10: over until it's triple zeros on the clock, so... I
- 1:15:56Speaker 10: don't really look at it like that, but I would
- 1:15:59Speaker 10: never say a game is over until the game is
- 1:16:00Speaker 10: officially over. But it's always cool to quiet the crowd down.
- 1:16:04Speaker 10: You see fans start walking out and stuff like that.
- 1:16:07Speaker 10: It's always cool to see, definitely.
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: One of the guys who backs up the linebackers is
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: Kosi Akpala. He made some noise during the training camp,
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: fall camp workouts, and he's gotten a few snaps so
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: far here early in the season. So, Kosi, Since he's
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: getting more snaps, Biles was asked, how is Coach Yagpala
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: earning the coach's trust?
- 1:16:27Speaker 10: Really because he's the same person every day. He's going
- 1:16:30Speaker 10: to always ask questions. He's going to watch his film.
- 1:16:34Speaker 10: You walk in the facility to go in the linebacker's room,
- 1:16:38Speaker 10: you can see his scooter parked right outside of there
- 1:16:40Speaker 10: because he's in there just watching, studying, waiting for me
- 1:16:44Speaker 10: or probably Juice to get in there to watch some
- 1:16:45Speaker 10: film with him. And he just wants to be on
- 1:16:48Speaker 10: the field. He wants to play and whatever. face he
- 1:16:51Speaker 10: can play in, whatever he can do to help the team,
- 1:16:53Speaker 10: he's going to do it. He's not a selfish person.
- 1:16:54Speaker 10: So you got a big shout out to Kosey for sure.
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: Yeah, okay.
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: Just be careful on that scooter.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: And then, you know, this Tennessee offense, we've heard the
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: coaches talk about it, both Josh Heupel and Steve Sarkeesian.
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: It's kind of a hybrid, really. It's not pure Mike
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: Leach air raid.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: It's not pure Art Bryles, you know, veer.
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: And shoot it's it's kind of a hybrid and some
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: of that is based on the skills of the quarterback
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: and also the other skill position players maybe you can
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: draw somewhat of a comp to Texas State although the
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: talent level certainly is different at Texas State but Biles
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: was asked are there similarities between the Tennessee offense and
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: what they saw against Texas State three weeks ago.
- 1:17:38Speaker 10: Obviously Tennessee is a fast-paced team Texas State was a
- 1:17:42Speaker 10: fast-paced team but you know It's two different opponents, two
- 1:17:48Speaker 10: different personnels.
- 1:17:50Speaker 5: They are different players.
- 1:17:52Speaker 10: So it's a little the same with the tempo and
- 1:17:55Speaker 10: kind of like the wide formations. But Tennessee kind of
- 1:17:58Speaker 10: got away from that a little bit. They've kind of
- 1:18:00Speaker 10: been running some more traditional formations. But obviously, you're not
- 1:18:04Speaker 10: going to know until you see it on Saturday. So
- 1:18:06Speaker 10: we're just going to wait to see what we can
- 1:18:08Speaker 10: get ahead of on Saturday.
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: There you go. All right.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: Coming up, we're going to hear more. from Sark Moore,
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: from Josh Heupel, and some more basketball early preview stuff
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: that we'll hear from Sean Miller when we continue here
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: on a Yacht Rock Wednesday on Sports Radio AM 1300
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: The Zone and where you always listen to us for
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: You can't wait to win a chance with my love.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: I remember when you used to be.
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: Talk of a time.
- 1:18:43Speaker 11: All you did was move.
- 1:18:47Speaker 7: Turn your love around.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: George Benson on the Yacht Rock Wednesday turned your love around.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Longhorns trying to turn their schedule around now, heading on
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: the road for the first time this season to take
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: on the Tennessee Volunteers. And Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: from today's SEC teleconference was asked, and we've heard some
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: from Sark already, but here's more. When he was asked,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: what would he describe as the most effective area of
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: his team in and, you know, the Tennessee running game
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: and why that has been affected?
- 1:19:23Speaker 13: Well, I think in all aspects of our team, you know,
- 1:19:26Speaker 13: I don't think anything has just.
- 1:19:27Speaker 7: Remained the same, right?
- 1:19:29Speaker 13: You know, in all three games, you know, we're evolving
- 1:19:33Speaker 13: as a team, you know, whether it's been the effectiveness
- 1:19:36Speaker 13: on third down on offense to on defense, we were
- 1:19:40Speaker 13: ineffective on third down, and now we've grown into being
- 1:19:42Speaker 13: really effective last week, and so I just don't think
- 1:19:45Speaker 13: you say, oh, this one thing has been the same.
- 1:19:48Speaker 13: You know, we're constantly trying to evolve and grow and improve.
- 1:19:52Speaker 13: And this week's been no different for us. And I think,
- 1:19:55Speaker 13: you know, I think from a Tennessee perspective, you know,
- 1:19:58Speaker 13: there's a commitment to running the ball and that it
- 1:20:00Speaker 13: starts there. And then they've got very dynamic runners. They've
- 1:20:03Speaker 13: got a good offensive line and they've got good schemes.
- 1:20:06Speaker 13: And so you put all that together and you're committed
- 1:20:09Speaker 13: to it.
- 1:20:10Speaker 7: They've been effective doing it.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: We talked about this earlier, the influences that Josh Heupel,
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: of course, was the quarterback at Oklahoma when they beat Texas.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: In 2000, went on to win the national championship.
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: And the types of influences he got, whether it was
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: from Mike Leach's air raid or.
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: Uh, also, uh, the, the influences coming from our Bryles
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: and other ones.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: And so Sark was asked how much of the influence
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: of Leach does he see in Heupel's attack?
- 1:20:38Speaker 13: Well, I think I see coach Leach's influence. I see
- 1:20:41Speaker 13: coach Bryles's influence. Um, I see an evolution of the
- 1:20:47Speaker 13: commitment to running the ball that is maybe different than
- 1:20:51Speaker 13: what Coach Leach was. But then you go into the
- 1:20:54Speaker 13: Coach Bryles world, you see some of the big splits
- 1:20:56Speaker 13: like Coach Bryles had. So we all get influenced by
- 1:21:00Speaker 13: people that we have along our journey in coaching. And
- 1:21:03Speaker 13: I think for Coach Heupel, He's been around some really
- 1:21:05Speaker 13: good coaches, some really good offensive minds, and has made
- 1:21:09Speaker 13: it his own and unique to Tennessee since he's gotten there,
- 1:21:13Speaker 13: and they do a heck of a job.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: One more for Sark, asking how much has he seen
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: his team evolve offensively through the first three weeks of
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: the season?
- 1:21:24Speaker 13: Well, I just try to evolve every year, try to
- 1:21:26Speaker 13: keep trying to get better, try not to get stale,
- 1:21:29Speaker 13: and You know, we're constantly trying to look at things
- 1:21:32Speaker 13: to put our players in the best position to be successful.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: Here's some more from Josh Heupel asked about the recruiting
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: evaluation they did on face on Brandon. And as they
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: were evaluating him, he was he appeared in.
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: Some camps for the volunteers.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: So we got a chance to see him side by
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: side with other quarterbacks. And Heupel was asked how much
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: of a factor that was.
- 1:21:58Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't know if this is much side-by-side, but
- 1:22:01Speaker 8: certainly getting a chance to work with the quarterback in
- 1:22:05Speaker 8: person and seeing their motion live, see.
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: How the ball jumps out of their hand.
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: And in some part, their ability to take coaching point
- 1:22:16Speaker 8: information and be able to start incorporating it into their
- 1:22:19Speaker 8: game relatively quickly.
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: I think that's.
- 1:22:24Speaker 8: Really important for a coach to when you're coaching quarterbacks,
- 1:22:28Speaker 8: but also other positions where they have a sense of
- 1:22:32Speaker 8: their body and can start to take the points that
- 1:22:35Speaker 8: you're giving to them.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: Then there was a curious thing with regard to his
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: offensive attack, that there are fewer, actual fewer offensive plays
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: being run this season, like 10 fewer. And Hypo was
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: asked what he thought the reason for that was.
- 1:22:55Speaker 8: Every game unfolds differently in managing the.
- 1:22:59Speaker 7: Game, whatever it might be.
- 1:23:01Speaker 8: Certainly there's been rule changes, you know, from 20 and
- 1:23:05Speaker 8: 21 and after that, too, that have affected the way
- 1:23:10Speaker 8: the game's played, too.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: So then the follow-up was rule changes, Coach?
- 1:23:14Speaker 8: As simple as offensive players stepping into the white defenses,
- 1:23:18Speaker 8: being able to sub.
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: Yeah, all right.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: So there you go with that. There's some more from
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: those two guys. Let's jump back to the NFL. D'Amico Ryans,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: the Texans head coach, trying to turn around this 0-2
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: start and the struggles that they've had. Part of it
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: is just not getting enough big plays made from their
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: quote-unquote playmakers.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: Now, you know, they've had some injuries. Get involved with that.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: But just trying to get their playmakers involved. And how
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: can they go about making more plays?
- 1:23:47Speaker 15: For me, it's just football every week. Like, that's what
- 1:23:50Speaker 15: the NFL comes down to, right? I think everybody watched
- 1:23:53Speaker 15: the game last night. Like, in the crunch time, in
- 1:23:56Speaker 15: the moment, like, the playmakers step up and make plays.
- 1:24:00Speaker 15: This is, you know, a general statement for me. That's
- 1:24:04Speaker 15: NFL football, right? And that's, you know, we have some
- 1:24:07Speaker 15: really talented players. We have great players on our team.
- 1:24:10Speaker 5: And I just expect our guys.
- 1:24:12Speaker 15: In those critical moments, those critical You know, those tight
- 1:24:15Speaker 15: moments in football games, you got to close it out,
- 1:24:18Speaker 15: expect our guys to rise up and make plays.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: Of course, one of the big moments was an offensive
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: line breakdown on fourth and one play last week and
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: how crucial it is to be able to avoid those things.
- 1:24:30Speaker 15: Yeah, on the fourth down play, our center has to stay.
- 1:24:32Speaker 15: We're a double team in Dexter Lawrence. Our center has
- 1:24:34Speaker 15: to stay on Dexter Lawrence. That block is not just
- 1:24:38Speaker 15: on Rutledge himself. There's not a single block, right? We
- 1:24:40Speaker 15: know we're playing one of the best D tackles in
- 1:24:42Speaker 15: the league. We got to stay on him, four hands
- 1:24:45Speaker 15: on him. Like I mentioned earlier in the week, that
- 1:24:47Speaker 15: didn't change. We got to double team that guy if
- 1:24:50Speaker 15: you expect to get a yard. We did not do that. Therefore,
- 1:24:53Speaker 15: we did not convert the fourth and one, right? Put
- 1:24:56Speaker 15: it on me as the cause, kick it, whatever. But
- 1:24:59Speaker 15: we got to make sure we execute it the right
- 1:25:01Speaker 15: way when we do call you know, any call, not
- 1:25:04Speaker 15: just a short yardage call, but that's any call for me.
- 1:25:06Speaker 15: We had a lot of opportunities to make some plays,
- 1:25:09Speaker 15: not only four for one, some third down opportunities that
- 1:25:12Speaker 15: we had in the game that we could have prolonged drives,
- 1:25:16Speaker 15: been in a better position to score a third down defensively.
- 1:25:20Speaker 15: We gave a couple of explosives or we could play better.
- 1:25:22Speaker 15: We can execute it better. So, you know, we can,
- 1:25:26Speaker 15: Pinpoint the one fourth down play, but to me it's
- 1:25:29Speaker 15: many more plays in the game where we could coach
- 1:25:32Speaker 15: it better, we can play it better.
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: So now they go to Indianapolis. Both teams hungry, desperate
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: for a win. Not only that, it's a division game.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: So how critical is it to be able to handle
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: their business in an AFC South division game?
- 1:25:45Speaker 15: It's critical for us to go execute better, play better football.
- 1:25:49Speaker 15: When you do the things that winning teams do, then
- 1:25:52Speaker 15: you'll put yourself in position to win a game right on.
- 1:25:56Speaker 15: I don't think there's any week that's not a must-win
- 1:26:00Speaker 15: week for me in the NFL. Every game is important, right?
- 1:26:02Speaker 15: You only get so many opportunities, right? And you have
- 1:26:06Speaker 15: to make sure you capitalize on the opportunities that you
- 1:26:08Speaker 15: get or they'll be few and few in between.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: So you got to.
- 1:26:12Speaker 15: Find a way, right, every week. They're all important. There
- 1:26:15Speaker 15: is not one game that wasn't important, just like these
- 1:26:18Speaker 15: first two were very important. We didn't play well enough
- 1:26:21Speaker 15: to win them. So the next one is equally as
- 1:26:23Speaker 15: important as the first two.
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: Obviously, we've been talking a lot of football and we'll
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: continue to do that. We've talked some baseball already this hour.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: Let's jump to basketball. Yesterday was the first day for
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: the Longhorns to get on the practice floor. Actually, Monday was.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: And so now they're getting into it. And Sean Miller,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: in visiting with the media, was asked about trying to
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: get his team ready without kind of grinding them down
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: too much, being able to extrapolate it out. since it
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: was the ceremonial, if you will, first day of practice
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: on Monday.
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: Is there a strategy involved there?
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: There is.
- 1:27:00Speaker 7: For example, today will be the first day that our
- 1:27:05Speaker 7: players will dress in our new practice gear that's given out.
- 1:27:10Speaker 7: And that really comes from my own experience as a player.
- 1:27:13Speaker 7: Because if you were a player in college basketball during
- 1:27:18Speaker 7: my generation, and really decades, October 15th, Midnight Madness. That's
- 1:27:23Speaker 7: the first day of practice. And not only was it
- 1:27:26Speaker 7: the first day of practice, but you were very limited
- 1:27:29Speaker 7: on what you were able to do in the summer
- 1:27:31Speaker 7: and the fall leading into that day. So it was
- 1:27:33Speaker 7: a big day. But I'll never forget walking into the
- 1:27:35Speaker 7: locker room and just the smell of the new gear.
- 1:27:39Speaker 7: You knew as soon as you came in, it was like, oh,
- 1:27:41Speaker 7: what is this? It feels different. And it was exciting.
- 1:27:44Speaker 7: It was that The fact you can say the date
- 1:27:48Speaker 7: tells you of how significant that used to be in
- 1:27:51Speaker 7: college basketball. So with our guys, we didn't give the
- 1:27:54Speaker 7: gear until today because in my own way, I want
- 1:27:57Speaker 7: today to be a meaningful day of this should feel different.
- 1:28:01Speaker 7: This should be more exciting. This is truly the first
- 1:28:03Speaker 7: day of practice. And we've kept that in mind with
- 1:28:07Speaker 7: whether it be this fall or summer, although we're developing
- 1:28:10Speaker 7: our team and taking advantage of our time together. I
- 1:28:13Speaker 7: don't think you can overdo it because the NBA plays
- 1:28:17Speaker 7: 82 regular season games. And if you talk to the coaches,
- 1:28:21Speaker 7: they kind of laugh and say, we have about 50 practices.
- 1:28:23Speaker 7: In college basketball right now, you could be 130 to
- 1:28:29Speaker 7: 150 team workouts and practices in 31 games. So I
- 1:28:34Speaker 7: think it's a good thing, but the balancing act of
- 1:28:38Speaker 7: trying to bring them along, and most importantly, to make
- 1:28:41Speaker 7: them excited as the month of February and March takes on,
- 1:28:45Speaker 7: where they have more juice left and that we're playing
- 1:28:48Speaker 7: our best basketball in those two months.
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: Of course, they have a new point guard this year
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: in Isaiah Johnson, and Sean was asked about What are
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: some of the point guard traits that he's looking for? Remember,
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: Sean was quite the point guard himself at Pitt. So
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: what are the traits that he is looking for, and
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: how do those roll into why he went after Isaiah Johnson?
- 1:29:12Speaker 7: Yeah, so we give that a lot of thought because
- 1:29:14Speaker 7: that position is so important if you're trying to build
- 1:29:18Speaker 7: a program for the top prize. That's the one common
- 1:29:22Speaker 7: theme that we've all seen. Through the history of college basketball,
- 1:29:25Speaker 7: the point guard position usually gets that team to the end.
- 1:29:30Speaker 7: And Isaiah, a couple things really strike out. You have
- 1:29:33Speaker 7: to remember that this past year at Colorado, he was
- 1:29:35Speaker 7: 18 years old. That's remarkable to think about the season,
- 1:29:40Speaker 7: the single season that he had in a great conference,
- 1:29:43Speaker 7: the Big 12, playing for Colorado. Free throw attempts, scoring,
- 1:29:47Speaker 7: scoring average, the different games that he had speaks for itself.
- 1:29:54Speaker 7: But when you have somebody that age, I feel like
- 1:29:56Speaker 7: their ceiling is higher. And that's one thing that we
- 1:29:59Speaker 7: really loved about him. You know, the second thing about
- 1:30:01Speaker 7: Isaiah is no different than the football quarterback position. That
- 1:30:05Speaker 7: competitive spirit like you have to have it comes from
- 1:30:09Speaker 7: a great basketball family. You guys probably aware of his dad,
- 1:30:13Speaker 7: one of the elite trainers in the world. And Isaiah
- 1:30:16Speaker 7: grew up in a gym, loves the game, pours into it,
- 1:30:19Speaker 7: gives a lot of himself and has done so. for
- 1:30:22Speaker 7: a long, long period of time. And the other part
- 1:30:24Speaker 7: that's interesting about Isaiah, he was not a highly recruited player.
- 1:30:28Speaker 7: So if you follow his trajectory from, let's call it
- 1:30:31Speaker 7: like his 10th grade year in high school through his
- 1:30:34Speaker 7: freshman year, I mean, he's.
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: Going like this, right?
- 1:30:38Speaker 7: So we feel like the best is yet to come.
- 1:30:40Speaker 7: He's gotten bigger and stronger this offseason. And I also
- 1:30:44Speaker 7: think that the days of just a pass first point
- 1:30:47Speaker 7: guard are over. They have to give you a scoring punch.
- 1:30:50Speaker 7: And he can do that. We want him to shoot
- 1:30:52Speaker 7: and score in addition to running our team.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: Also adding the newcomers, Evans and Freeman, and what they
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: do for this team's locker room.
- 1:31:02Speaker 7: Elijah Freeman and Amari Evans, I'll put both those guys
- 1:31:06Speaker 7: in one category. They played in the SEC. This is
- 1:31:10Speaker 7: a super athletic league. As you know, unreal depth in
- 1:31:14Speaker 7: our league, talent-wise, jumps off the page. It's nice to
- 1:31:17Speaker 7: have a couple players... In other words, we didn't coach
- 1:31:20Speaker 7: them a year ago like we did Modest, but they
- 1:31:23Speaker 7: played big roles and they played on winning teams, especially Amari.
- 1:31:27Speaker 7: They went to the Elite Eight, being coached, playing in
- 1:31:31Speaker 7: this league, traveling to the various arenas. I think that's
- 1:31:34Speaker 7: vital to bring that type of experience to this year's team.
- 1:31:38Speaker 7: So they bring that SEC experience. I think Elijah, again,
- 1:31:43Speaker 7: a lot like I answered the question about Isaiah, Elijah
- 1:31:47Speaker 7: a couple years ago is a Division II player If
- 1:31:49Speaker 7: you guys don't know his story, you really should research
- 1:31:52Speaker 7: it out. It's amazing that he went from being a
- 1:31:55Speaker 7: good high school player in South Florida to Division II
- 1:31:59Speaker 7: to a starter at Auburn. And again, that trajectory that
- 1:32:03Speaker 7: he's on, we hope that our program can help develop
- 1:32:06Speaker 7: him because he has a lot of talent as well.
- 1:32:09Speaker 7: And I think the best is yet to come for him.
- 1:32:12Speaker 7: And Amari, ditto for him. We were familiar with Amari
- 1:32:16Speaker 7: more so than Elijah because We recruited Amari at Xavier,
- 1:32:21Speaker 7: so we knew him and he knew us. But his
- 1:32:24Speaker 7: toughness and I think that experience he got last year
- 1:32:27Speaker 7: at Tennessee will be valuable for us this year.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: Then there's that, you may not realize, it's still ongoing,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: that ALS challenge, the Ice Bucket Challenge as well. Sean
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: Miller did it the other day. And he then challenged
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: Dan Hurley, head coach at UConn, They've known each other
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: a while. He challenged him to do it. Why did
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: he participate, and why did he go after Hurley to
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: be the next on the list?
- 1:32:56Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I chose to participate because I was nominated.
- 1:32:59Speaker 7: Coach Cal, Arkansas, who I know, he put my name
- 1:33:03Speaker 7: on it. So, yeah, but obviously it's a big cause.
- 1:33:08Speaker 7: I mean, it's a disease that I think all of
- 1:33:11Speaker 7: us know about, and I think our heart goes out.
- 1:33:15Speaker 7: to those affected by it any way that we can
- 1:33:18Speaker 7: bring awareness to it, help to it. I think that's
- 1:33:21Speaker 7: the other side, the more important side of it. And then,
- 1:33:24Speaker 7: you know, I think if there is any joy or
- 1:33:27Speaker 7: fun with it, it's, you know, I think engaging different
- 1:33:29Speaker 7: coaches and watching them interact with their team, et cetera. So, yeah,
- 1:33:33Speaker 7: I wanted to do it, I think, number one, for
- 1:33:35Speaker 7: all the right reasons and then, you know, and to
- 1:33:37Speaker 7: keep it going. So I don't know if he's going
- 1:33:39Speaker 7: to do it. It's up to him, but hopefully he will.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: And these bits of sound come from the one-on-one that
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: Mike Hardball Harge had with Coach Miller. If you listen
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: to the morning kickoff, Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: 9 a.m. here on The Zone, you were probably able
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: to hear some of this sound. But we thought it
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: important enough. Good stuff that Hardball Harge got with Sean Miller.
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: Talking about the evolution of that point guard position.
- 1:34:10Speaker 7: Yeah, I think the NBA speaks loudly when it comes
- 1:34:13Speaker 7: to that. If you look at a guy like Kyrie,
- 1:34:16Speaker 7: who's a point guard, but he can score 30, right?
- 1:34:19Speaker 7: So I think in today's game, the way it's played,
- 1:34:22Speaker 7: if you're going to play at a fast pace, which
- 1:34:24Speaker 7: we want to do, you just need firepower at every position.
- 1:34:28Speaker 7: And I think when you have a shooter and somebody
- 1:34:31Speaker 7: who can score at the point guard and is able
- 1:34:33Speaker 7: to run the team, then I think that that's what's
- 1:34:36Speaker 7: required to be a really good college basketball team. And
- 1:34:39Speaker 7: I think Isaiah Johnson is certainly one of those guys.
- 1:34:43Speaker 7: And Austin Goosby, when you look at him, Mikey Lewis,
- 1:34:47Speaker 7: who I didn't talk a lot about, who transferred from St. Mary's,
- 1:34:51Speaker 7: those are all three guys that can dribble past, shoot.
- 1:34:54Speaker 7: But if you look at just who they are as players,
- 1:34:57Speaker 7: they're more of a true basketball player. On a given night,
- 1:35:00Speaker 7: they can score the ball too. And I think we
- 1:35:02Speaker 7: like that about our backcourt.
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: Joe Sterling coming in as a shooter, and Sean had
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: talked about all the free throw shooting stuff and how
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: important that was, but also the dude could knock down
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: the threes.
- 1:35:13Speaker 7: Yeah, and I hope I don't jinx him because of
- 1:35:19Speaker 7: the obvious, putting pressure on him for no reason. But look,
- 1:35:24Speaker 7: if I have a track record in any area of life,
- 1:35:27Speaker 7: it'd probably be watching free throws, shooting free throws myself. Obviously,
- 1:35:30Speaker 7: as a coach, you recognize the importance of it. winning
- 1:35:33Speaker 7: close games. But yeah, Joe Sterling is who you're referring to.
- 1:35:37Speaker 7: He is a true freshman. And just from a shooting perspective, well,
- 1:35:41Speaker 7: Bo Ogden and Joe are both excellent shooters. I bring
- 1:35:44Speaker 7: Joe up simply because from the free throw line, I've
- 1:35:46Speaker 7: really not seen anybody more deadly or consistent than him.
- 1:35:50Speaker 7: And it's really astonishing to look at his accuracy and
- 1:35:53Speaker 7: where he's at for such a young player too.
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: So yeah.
- 1:35:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:35:57Speaker 7: Hopefully that's a weapon that we can use to our advantage.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: From outside to inside, David Punch is the TCU transfer,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: and what kind of impact might he have on this
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: ball club?
- 1:36:07Speaker 7: Well, Punch came from the Big 12, and obviously I
- 1:36:10Speaker 7: think we all really respect that conference. Had two really
- 1:36:13Speaker 7: good seasons, especially his sophomore season at TCU. David Punch
- 1:36:19Speaker 7: and his family was familiar with my staff and me.
- 1:36:22Speaker 7: When I was at Xavier, we recruited him. We really
- 1:36:25Speaker 7: liked him a lot. It wasn't easy to pull him
- 1:36:27Speaker 7: from the state of Texas and bring him to a
- 1:36:30Speaker 7: small private school in Ohio. But we tried. But I
- 1:36:33Speaker 7: think what that did for us is it really created
- 1:36:36Speaker 7: a true, genuine sense of belief that they knew that
- 1:36:39Speaker 7: we valued him and believed in him as a player.
- 1:36:43Speaker 7: So when he went in the transfer portal to have
- 1:36:45Speaker 7: the opportunity to already have that bridge built, it certainly
- 1:36:48Speaker 7: helped us. But Punch, his game is unique. You know,
- 1:36:53Speaker 7: although he's 6'7, 6'8, really long arms and a big frame.
- 1:36:58Speaker 7: So he plays a lot bigger than his actual height.
- 1:37:01Speaker 7: And you see that with his defense, his rebounding at
- 1:37:04Speaker 7: both ends and his ability to score and to paint.
- 1:37:07Speaker 7: Like he's a guy that if he's being guarded by
- 1:37:10Speaker 7: a smaller player, can really take advantage. And yet he
- 1:37:13Speaker 7: has that mobility and mindset where defensively he can guard
- 1:37:17Speaker 7: a lot of different types of players. Also really good
- 1:37:20Speaker 7: driving the ball, which Big guys you don't really think
- 1:37:22Speaker 7: about as drivers, but in Punch's case, that might be
- 1:37:25Speaker 7: the best thing he does. And I think that makes
- 1:37:27Speaker 7: him a really valuable member of our team.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: And then finally, something on the changing landscape of college
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: basketball with the tournament expansion, NIL transfer portal being bigger
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: and bolder and.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: Louder than ever. How about Sean Miller's thoughts on that?
- 1:37:45Speaker 7: Well, it's like anything. I think as the industry that
- 1:37:47Speaker 7: you're in changes, sometimes you look at that and don't
- 1:37:50Speaker 7: feel good about it is. But we all have to
- 1:37:55Speaker 7: either adapt, evolve and embrace it. Or to me, you
- 1:37:58Speaker 7: get left behind and there's going to be more change
- 1:38:01Speaker 7: in college sports, especially in college basketball than ever before.
- 1:38:04Speaker 7: Doesn't mean that, you know, I'm signing the petition to
- 1:38:07Speaker 7: say this is awesome. But if this is what it is,
- 1:38:10Speaker 7: then you have to evolve and grow and say, OK,
- 1:38:13Speaker 7: What can I do? What can we do to adjust
- 1:38:16Speaker 7: and adapt to make sure that we're embracing this new
- 1:38:19Speaker 7: way and bring out the best in these guys? Because
- 1:38:21Speaker 7: at the end of the day, if you have an
- 1:38:23Speaker 7: environment in a basketball program where the players know they're
- 1:38:27Speaker 7: getting better, they're developing, that they can reach their dreams
- 1:38:30Speaker 7: at Texas, a lot of great things follow. So I
- 1:38:33Speaker 7: think just paying more attention to the development in the
- 1:38:37Speaker 7: summer and fall, getting them together more, developing leadership, having
- 1:38:41Speaker 7: more team things off the court than ever before, things
- 1:38:45Speaker 7: you might not even thought about in the months of
- 1:38:47Speaker 7: June or July in the past, You now have to
- 1:38:50Speaker 7: make it to forefront because they don't know each other.
- 1:38:52Speaker 7: We don't know each other. So we work hard in
- 1:38:54Speaker 7: that area. And I do think, though, you can't make
- 1:38:58Speaker 7: up for lost time. Our best days aren't going to
- 1:39:00Speaker 7: be in November, a lot like last year. We're going
- 1:39:02Speaker 7: to get better as the year goes on in large
- 1:39:05Speaker 7: part because we'll be more familiar.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: So there's some sound from Sean Miller, Texas men's basketball coach.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: We have more coming up here on this Yacht Rock
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: Wednesday on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. Here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday, the late,
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: great Robert Palmer. Because we're all every kind of people, right?
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: A couple of college football notes here. One, this is
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: weird and unfortunate if you care about the benefit of
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: the Oklahoma Sooners. You may not have heard about this.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: This happened on Monday's practice. David Stone is their outstanding
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: defensive tackle. And he suffered a knee injury on the
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: practice field. Now those things happen. But it didn't happen
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: in the normal way that you would expect it. It
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: happened when he collided with a scout team player on
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: their jog through.
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: Oh, that guy's got to feel sick to his stomach.
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: No doubt.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: And Brent Venables said yesterday that the knee, quote, kind
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: of popped out. The test results were positive. Stone reported
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: a pain level 2 out of 10. He was not
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: injured while playing offense. That was reported. initially, that they
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: were trying him out on offense because the offense has
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: had so much trouble. He said that did not happen
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: on the offense. Asked about the other options at Stone's position.
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: Venables indicated he's not ruling out Stone for that SEC
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: opener on Saturday at Georgia, but veterans Trent Wilson, Bishop Thomas,
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: and Nigel Smith III will be part of that defensive tackle.
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: Rotation.
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: He said the depth's okay there, but it's a weird deal.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: Stone already has 12 tackles this season, including two for loss,
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: one half sack through three games. This guy was the
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: number six overall recruit a couple of years ago and
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: was rated in the spring the number four defensive tackle prospect.
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: For next year's NFL draft. Really, really weird.
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: All right, we'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: of the program on 13 Under the Zone.
