- 0:22And this is about when a child wants us to guess things.
- 0:27So,
- 0:28the guessing game
- 0:29game in the playroom
- 0:31and how to handle that,
- 0:32what's going on,
- 0:34best practices,
- 0:35so on and so forth.
- 0:36So,
- 0:36Maddie,
- 0:36thank you for
- 0:37the email.
- 0:38I appreciate it.

- 0:50but I kinda wanna make sure that we kinda have it all in one fell swoop just so that
- 0:54new listeners and people that are new to the family
- 0:57kinda have a sense of what's going on.

- 1:13We communicate everything that's happening in the weekly newsletter.
- 1:16So,
- 1:16those are going to be your two places specifically that you
- 1:19need to peruse and make sure that you're signed up for.
- 1:23And just to kind of review and,
- 1:25and do a rundown here.
- 1:26We have our live event in New Jersey coming up the middle of October.
- 1:30So you still have some time to get signed up for that.
- 1:33We have a podcast meetup in Jersey.
- 1:36So,
- 1:36on Sunday the 18th,
- 1:38we are going to have unrelated to the conference event.
- 1:42A podcast meetup.
- 1:43So podcast listeners within driving distance of Jersey,
- 1:47which that's a lot of you.
- 1:48There's so many New Yorkers,
- 1:50so many New Jerseyans,
- 1:51there's so many in PA,
- 1:52there's so many in Connecticut,
- 1:54all y'all up there,
- 1:56New England people
- 1:58that can get to the New York,
- 2:00New Jersey line.
- 2:01We're going to have a podcast meet up on the 18th,
- 2:04Sunday.
- 2:05So,
- 2:06please make sure that you go to playtherapynow.com and register for that.
- 2:10We're really excited.
- 2:11That's something that I do when I travel so that I can meet you.
- 2:15And so,
- 2:16it's just hang out and spend time together and just
- 2:20have a lot of fun getting to know other CCPTs
- 2:23and hopefully make some community connections as well.
- 2:25But obviously,
- 2:26I get to meet you in different parts of the country.
- 2:28So,
- 2:29The meetup is gonna be on Sunday.
- 2:31The event is on Saturday.
- 2:33That's coming up.
- 2:34We also have Field of Dreams coming up in January,
- 2:36at the end of January in Tampa.
- 2:38That's our annual event.
- 2:39So 2nd annual Field of Dreams event.
- 2:41Many of you were not able to come last year,
- 2:44and many of you have said that you want to come this year.
- 2:46So,
- 2:46please make sure that you are aware that's coming.
- 2:49Start to think about,
- 2:50you know,
- 2:51tickets and planning and all of that.
- 2:53Excited to have you all come to my neck of the woods
- 2:56in January.
- 2:56Although last year it was so dang cold.
- 2:58I mean,
- 2:59I literally blame the northerners because it snowed in Florida
- 3:02at the Field of Dreams event after I promised that
- 3:05in January we normally have like 70 degree weather.
- 3:08So we had snow in Florida,
- 3:10which happens,
- 3:10I don't know,
- 3:113 times in my entire lifetime.
- 3:14So,
- 3:14that was crazy.
- 3:15I suspect this year maybe we will not have snow in January in Tampa,
- 3:19so
- 3:20please come hang out with me then.
- 3:22We have obviously the Parent Companion for Play Therapy book
- 3:26that is for sale.
- 3:27Many of you are buying that in bulk,
- 3:29so I'm so thrilled that you're using that in your practices.
- 3:32We have a new book coming out.
- 3:34Eric just released the Happily Ever Asperger book.
- 3:36I mean,
- 3:36there's just so much going on around here.
- 3:39So make sure that you go to playtherapynow.com to check it out.
- 3:42If you're interested in coaching,
- 3:43you can also find information about that there.
- 3:46All of the Corwell links if you want to get CEUs on demand.
- 3:50That's there.
- 3:51I've got info about the online community,
- 3:53the Collective,
- 3:54so
- 3:55just
- 3:56Hang out with me.
- 3:57It's the moral of the story.
- 3:59You know,
- 4:00I,
- 4:00I spend many,
- 4:01many hours of my life sitting staring at
- 4:05foam
- 4:06sound dampening panels when I podcast.
- 4:08I have a mic in front of me and I literally stare at gray sound dampening panels.
- 4:13But the way that I
- 4:14get through that is I imagine y'all's faces and what
- 4:18you're doing when you listen and where you live and,
- 4:20and,
- 4:20you know,
- 4:21what your experience is like with CCPT.
- 4:23So,
- 4:24it's easier for me to do that when I actually meet you in person.
- 4:27So,
- 4:27just know that there's lots of opportunities for you to connect
- 4:29with me and I'd love for you to do it.
- 4:31All right.
- 4:32Overview done.
- 4:33So,
- 4:33let me read parts of Maddie's email and then we'll dive in.
- 4:38Every session
- 4:39my 10 year old client at some point will say something like,
- 4:42Guess what I'm eating for lunch?
- 4:44or You have 3 guesses for what I just built,
- 4:47or 3 guesses for what I did yesterday.
- 4:49I often reflect her statements,
- 4:51noting that she likes knowing something that I don't,
- 4:54or that she wants me to guess even though she knows I don't know.
- 4:57But even after that,
- 4:58she insists,
- 5:00I guess 3 times.
- 5:01What is the correct CCPT approach to this and what does she actually want?
- 5:06All right.
- 5:06So,
- 5:06I'm really glad that you asked this.
- 5:08I'm not sure that we've talked about it often in the podcast.
- 5:11I know we talk about it in coaching and in the collective pretty regularly,
- 5:15but I'm not sure how often it's made its way to an episode.
- 5:17So,
- 5:18I think this is gonna be really helpful.
- 5:20One of the things that we need to understand about a scenario like this
- 5:23is there's always a why.
- 5:25And I think Maddie,
- 5:26you've already kind of acknowledged it.
- 5:28You
- 5:29are aware that she knows that you don't know,
- 5:31and she likes knowing something that you don't.
- 5:33So that lends itself toward it's a power and control thing.
- 5:37Because a lot of times kids
- 5:39will engage with us,
- 5:40ask us questions,
- 5:41ask us to guess things,
- 5:42and there are other motivations.
- 5:45And I don't want to get in the weeds here talking
- 5:47about something that's kind of unrelated to your specific question,
- 5:49but
- 5:50I just want to throw out some of those options.
- 5:52So,
- 5:52sometimes a kid will have us guess because
- 5:55they
- 5:56have low self-esteem
- 5:58and they're wanting to confirm or deny whether or not they
- 6:04Drew something that was understandable.
- 6:06So like,
- 6:07guess what I drew,
- 6:08and it's a self-esteem concern.
- 6:11In other words,
- 6:12if you can guess that it's a giraffe,
- 6:13then I drew a giraffe well.
- 6:16And if you can't guess that it's a giraffe,
- 6:17then I drew a giraffe poorly,
- 6:19and it's a self-esteem kind of thing.
- 6:22Sometimes they're asking us to guess because it's connective and relational.
- 6:26They want to
- 6:27involve us and have conversation with us
- 6:29in what's important to them.
- 6:31In this particular case,
- 6:32Maddie,
- 6:33it seems like it's a power and control thing,
- 6:34and there are other options for why a child behaves that way.
- 6:37Those were just kind of a few that I threw out there.
- 6:40But in this particular case,
- 6:42what I'm eating for lunch,
- 6:43what I built,
- 6:44what I did yesterday,
- 6:46OK,
- 6:46so I think there's a part of this,
- 6:48especially lunch and yesterday,
- 6:50she is letting you in outside of
- 6:53the playroom.
- 6:54In other words,
- 6:54I want you to be aware of what happens when I'm not with you.
- 6:59That can partially be relational and connective.
- 7:02However,
- 7:02the fact that she insists
- 7:04and that you acknowledge and you reflect and she still
- 7:07makes you guess three times,
- 7:09that feels more like power and control if we kind of had to rank those.
- 7:13So,
- 7:14you have two questions.
- 7:15What is the correct approach for CCPT and what does she actually want?
- 7:19OK,
- 7:19so in this particular case,
- 7:21since it seems as though it's power control driven,
- 7:24she wants to have
- 7:26the knowledge.
- 7:27And the control and the power and the authority
- 7:30and therefore you don't.
- 7:33So that's
- 7:34what she wants.
- 7:35It's serving a need for her.
- 7:36It's temporary.
- 7:37It won't last forever,
- 7:39but for right now,
- 7:41she needs to have that
- 7:43knowledge and power and control
- 7:45and make sure that you don't.
- 7:47What is the most helpful way to approach this from a CCPT perspective?
- 7:51You essentially
- 7:53wordsmith things.
- 7:54So,
- 7:55this is kind of that subtle nuance of CCPT that comes with
- 7:59more practice and higher levels of mastery.
- 8:01So,
- 8:02when a child says,
- 8:03OK,
- 8:03guess what I did yesterday?
- 8:06You
- 8:07reflect
- 8:08multiple times.
- 8:09You acknowledge that you're not sure.
- 8:11Oh,
- 8:12you really want me to guess.
- 8:13Oh,
- 8:14and so you're kind of stalling.
- 8:16One of the most helpful strategies in a scenario like this
- 8:19is you hem and you haw,
- 8:21and you kind of stall and you don't really give an actual answer.
- 8:24You can say lots of things without actually answering the question.
- 8:28Oh,
- 8:28you want me to guess what you did yesterday?
- 8:31Oh my goodness,
- 8:32there's so many things that you could have done yesterday.
- 8:35Hmm.
- 8:37Man,
- 8:37I mean,
- 8:38a whole day,
- 8:38there's so many options.
- 8:40I don't even know where I would begin to figure out what you did.
- 8:43And you literally talk about the answer without giving an answer.
- 8:46That's a pretty standard routine.
- 8:49And
- 8:50we're essentially acknowledging that she's wanting us to guess.
- 8:53She's acknowledging we're acknowledging that she's curious.
- 8:56We're acknowledging that she's hoping we
- 8:59will come up with an answer.
- 9:01So,
- 9:01we're filling in a lot of time and space,
- 9:03essentially.
- 9:03And what we're doing.
- 9:05is hoping that
- 9:07she gets so tired of you not answering
- 9:10that she either moves on or just tells you.
- 9:14That doesn't always work,
- 9:15but it works enough that that's a really helpful strategy.
- 9:19So we're going to continue to
- 9:22Kind of avoid answering the question,
- 9:24but we,
- 9:24it's actually important to not stay silent though.
- 9:27Here,
- 9:27let me make that distinction.
- 9:29So,
- 9:30often what will happen is I'll watch videos of CCPTs and coaching and
- 9:34they'll say,
- 9:35oh,
- 9:35you're wondering if I can guess.
- 9:40And they just sit there.
- 9:41And then the kid looks at them and nods their head like,
- 9:43uh-huh,
- 9:44with their eyebrows raised,
- 9:45like,
- 9:45what are you doing?
- 9:46And then the therapist says,
- 9:47hm,
- 9:48you're curious.
- 9:50If I know what you did yesterday.
- 9:54And then there's this other awkward pause,
- 9:56and then the kid goes,
- 9:57yeah,
- 9:57so guess what I did?
- 9:59And then the therapist goes,
- 10:00hm,
- 10:00you're really wanting me to guess.
- 10:03OK,
- 10:04so
- 10:05all of those are on target responses.
- 10:07They are adherent to the model,
- 10:09but they're not actually giving any answer.
- 10:13And so that is very frustrating for a child.
- 10:15It,
- 10:16it actually feels avoidant.
- 10:18And what happens,
- 10:19unfortunately is that sometimes creates a reverse power struggle
- 10:24where we have given the child power and control in the playroom.
- 10:27CCPT affords autonomy and freedom.
- 10:30And so we've basically said,
- 10:31you're in charge,
- 10:32and then the child says,
- 10:33good,
- 10:33guess what I did yesterday.
- 10:36And we don't give them an answer that seems like an answer,
- 10:40and they feel like we're refusing to let them have power and control
- 10:44because their power and control is
- 10:45yes.
- 10:47I'm in charge,
- 10:48so I'm telling you I want you to guess.
- 10:50And then when we don't,
- 10:52and it's just silent and it's awkward,
- 10:54that can be very frustrating for a child.
- 10:57So we want to give them enough in our response that
- 11:00it feels like we're answering even though we're not actually saying,
- 11:02I think you read a book.
- 11:05OK.
- 11:06Another strategy for this.
- 11:08Is
- 11:09you
- 11:10get more clues.
- 11:12So child's not going to let up,
- 11:14child's going to insist that you give a guess.
- 11:17So then you start trying to figure out like how to whittle down the options.
- 11:21So,
- 11:21oh,
- 11:22OK,
- 11:22so you want me to guess.
- 11:24I wonder if I'm guessing.
- 11:27Something that you did or something that you did
- 11:29or something that you said
- 11:31or no,
- 11:32no,
- 11:32no,
- 11:32no,
- 11:32it's something that I did.
- 11:33OK,
- 11:33so it's something that you did
- 11:37at
- 11:39home.
- 11:40At home.
- 11:41OK,
- 11:41so it's something that you did at home,
- 11:43and then at this point you're engaging enough,
- 11:46you're still not answering the question,
- 11:48but you're engaging enough that you're starting to get a
- 11:51clue as to where the child may be going with
- 11:54the question.
- 11:56And
- 11:57it again stalls for time.
- 12:00And so,
- 12:00you know,
- 12:01you can do that for a really long time.
- 12:03OK,
- 12:03it was something that you did at home.
- 12:06Hmm,
- 12:07I wonder if this was something that you did before school or after school.
- 12:11OK.
- 12:12And so I mean that's almost a never-ending
- 12:15conversation
- 12:16if you want it to be.
- 12:17And so eventually if the kid really starts to get frustrated,
- 12:22angry,
- 12:23upset,
- 12:23irritated,
- 12:24whatever,
- 12:25there's emotional IQ
- 12:27that we need to build.
- 12:28So child is really
- 12:30not handling that you are ignoring the answer.
- 12:33Then you might say,
- 12:35OK,
- 12:35so you just want me to choose something that you did at home after school,
- 12:40and you just want me to guess.
- 12:41Yes,
- 12:42hm,
- 12:43you
- 12:45Watch TV.
- 12:47OK.
- 12:48That is actually a practical answer for the clues that you've been given.
- 12:53It was after school,
- 12:54at home,
- 12:55something that the child did.
- 12:57Watching TV is a feasible response.
- 13:01And so you're trying to delay
- 13:04actually having to make a guess.
- 13:07But if it gets to a point where
- 13:10you can tell that it is actually kind of derailing or disrupting
- 13:15the session,
- 13:16this is kind of a clinical judgment call that we make.
- 13:18If this is disrupting the flow of the session,
- 13:22Then we throw out a very simple,
- 13:24appropriate guess.
- 13:27And then we start back if they go,
- 13:29nope.
- 13:30So she says,
- 13:30no,
- 13:31it wasn't watching TV
- 13:32then you're like,
- 13:33oh,
- 13:33OK,
- 13:34well,
- 13:34I told you there were so many options.
- 13:35I have no idea how I'm supposed to guess.
- 13:37And you go right back to,
- 13:40I'm avoiding answering the question and I'm stalling.
- 13:43So it becomes kind of this delicate dance that
- 13:45we do where we're honoring and respecting the child,
- 13:48why they're doing it,
- 13:49what they need,
- 13:50being adherent to the model,
- 13:51making sure that we're not drifting,
- 13:53making sure that we're not jumping too quickly to answer,
- 13:55making sure we're not avoiding the answer.
- 13:57So it's very nuanced,
- 13:59but
- 14:00there's a delicacy to it
- 14:02where
- 14:03we're kind of like,
- 14:04OK,
- 14:05I'm going to give the child enough.
- 14:08That it doesn't create a reverse power struggle,
- 14:10but I'm not going
- 14:11to
- 14:12dive in and make guesses because that can actually be disruptive as well.
- 14:16So I hope that that's helpful,
- 14:17Maddie.
- 14:18You know,
- 14:19it is kind of a very specific case by case kind of scenario because some kid,
- 14:23you could say,
- 14:24Oh,
- 14:24you're curious if I could guess,
- 14:25and then they go,
- 14:26Never mind,
- 14:27I'll just tell you.
- 14:28OK,
- 14:29so that,
- 14:30that,
- 14:30that's a totally different dynamic than a child that's going to do 20 minutes
- 14:34round and round and round with you insisting that you guess.
- 14:38So we kind of play each
- 14:39scenario by ear and,
- 14:41and then we have our strategies moving forward.
- 14:43So,
- 14:43thanks so much for the email,
- 14:44Maddie.
- 14:44I appreciate it.
- 14:45If y'all wanna reach out,
