Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / The Futility Of Existence With JOHNNY & RHYS From ESCARION
Transcript
- 0:00So I'm Reese I played bass in Scarion, and I'm Johnny I played guitar
- 0:05and vocals in a Scarion. New album just came out yesterday, October thirty
- 0:10first, and we're very excited to get this out into the world. It's
- 0:13been three years in the making, very keen for everyone to have listened to
- 0:17it and exciting times. Beattiful guys, Thanks for joining us tonight. Thank
- 0:23you for having us by pleasure. As you say. Scarian released your sophomore
- 0:28album, Towards the Future Existence only yesterday. I know it hasn't been too
- 0:32long, but how's the early reception been for it? Been really awesome.
- 0:35We've gotten two really good reviews so far, and yeah, everyone who came
- 0:41and listened to it has loved it. We had an album launch party last
- 0:45night. We actually hosted it where we usually rehearsed. We've got a few
- 0:50friends to come down have a listen. We had some drinks and it was
- 0:53great. Good. So, can you tell us a bit more about the
- 0:56album from a musical point of view and what are you going for with it?
- 1:00Well, so, with this album obviously coming off Pillars of the Faith,
- 1:03our first album, having a concept of the Seven Deadly Sins and a
- 1:10much more subjective approach to it. With this album, we've gone for the
- 1:15concept again, but this time in a more broader sense. We're sort of
- 1:19talking about side as a whole. We're talking about the objective view now,
- 1:22we're looking out towards the future and the bleakness of that. Really, it's
- 1:26very dark album, but nonetheless it's an awesome Yeah. No, I was
- 1:32just going to say that. I think it's a very unique album. It's
- 1:36very it's very different to the first album. It still has the heaviness,
- 1:40but we also have the ferial sort of like cleans and atmosphere now as well
- 1:44mixed in this album. We also recorded with seven shrink guitars, like we
- 1:48use seven string guitars when the first album was traditional six. So there's a
- 1:52bit of a shift in the songwriting process like that, And a lot of
- 1:55the songs were written over COVID too Lockdowns one, So that should give you
- 2:00an indication of like the style that we're riding in, just like the bleakness
- 2:06of society eating itself during lockdown? Is that what it took three years to
- 2:10do because he started writing then and you were sort of just we balancing it
- 2:15out or what takes that long. Just a lot of thought process behind it.
- 2:20Also, we had a lineup change. We got guy who plays keys
- 2:24and sings. We're looking for a clean sing iron a keyboarders for a while
- 2:30and we'll just put out the feelers that we put the feelers out. We
- 2:32didn't know whether it was going to be something that we seriously considered, but
- 2:38yeah, now it's We auditioned Guya and she was the one and done,
- 2:43like the first person we auditioned, and we were like, she fits us
- 2:46so well, so yeah, we just went with that and then it was
- 2:50just a molding process of well, we couldn't record or practice twenty one,
- 2:57so he took to about twenty twenty two to actually like fully start practicing and
- 3:00learning the album and writing. So you mentioned that you've added progressive and someponic
- 3:07elements to the sound. So why I decided to go down that path,
- 3:12Well, we I feel like for us, you know, because we're you
- 3:15know, you know, as musicians, like we all are on the same
- 3:20sort of pages each other. We want to keep moving, you know.
- 3:23With the first album being you know, very much death driven sort of music,
- 3:30you know, hard hitting riffs and complicated sort of song structures. I
- 3:34guess it's sort of the same with this album with complicated song strike. But
- 3:38we wanted more. We wanted to add a bit more spice to our sound
- 3:42as it's scary. We wanted to change for the better, you know,
- 3:45get get a lot more, you know, flexing those musical muscles out there
- 3:50basically you know the bigger lineup obviously, and you know, having the challenge
- 3:53of writing these songs as Johnny has written for us and Lewis as well.
- 3:59So it's it's I reckon it's been a good step for us, like going
- 4:03in this direction. As Reese just said, it's just an evolution of sound.
- 4:09We had what we had with the first album and very proud of it.
- 4:13I thought it was awesome. I think it is awesome. But yeah,
- 4:15just we all change as humans, and as we evolve as humans,
- 4:18we also evolve as songwriters as musicians, and it just made sense for us
- 4:23to go in that direction. And you mentioned introducing the clean vocals too,
- 4:28like how did you go with that? Like it was a trial and narrator
- 4:30sort of see how things fit and see what worked based for the band,
- 4:33or did it happen seamlessly. It kind of act happened seamlessly. As I
- 4:40was writing a lot of the songs, just some guitar throughout Covid, I
- 4:45wrote, I found myself writing a lot more clean parts. And then I
- 4:48was thinking a lot of them were extended, and I was thinking, either
- 4:54we're going to keep it extended and get a singer, or we're gonna make
- 4:57them a lot shorter and just have like malody on a guitar or another instrument.
- 5:01And we were tossing and turning between a couple of different options, and
- 5:05then we thought, as I said, we just put out the feelers,
- 5:10see if anyone actually wanted to join, or if there was actually a possibility
- 5:15of anyone merging with us. And Guia she came in first audition and she
- 5:21was in the band. The cover artwork's awesome to guys like It features shadowy
- 5:28figures in a dark landscape walking up a hill towards the large, foreboding looking
- 5:32tree, Like, what's going on there? It looks great? But what
- 5:35story is it? Other the story of the album? Yeah, towards it.
- 5:41It just we wanted to represent towards a feudal existence, so all these
- 5:46souls moving towards a final destination and it's bleak, so like a bleak destination,
- 5:51but also, Guya really wanted us to have like a little bit of
- 5:56a glimmer of hope. That's why the tree is kind of outlined by a
- 5:59bit of a light. So it's like moving towards a very bleak destination,
- 6:02but there is like a slimmer of hope for humanity, and that's what it
- 6:05sort of represents, even though, like a majority of the album lyric wise,
- 6:13is very bleak and very dark, but there's that small glimmer of hope
- 6:16in the album cover just for just for our audience safety a little bit there.
- 6:21It's just a touch. Yeah, yeah, it's touch. And at
- 6:27the same time as dropped the album, you also dropped the single zeit Guy.
- 6:30So just say that's all. Only one said a a scarion. Would
- 6:32you say that's a good stunt of representation of the album? Oh, hell's
- 6:35yeah, absolutely it is. I mean, you know, I I we
- 6:42definitely wanted Zeitgeist to be sort of a standout songs as well as the rest
- 6:46of them, but with Zeitgeist, you know, it features what should be
- 6:50the standard of the Scarry now, which is basically, you know, bleak
- 6:55lyrics, lots of heavy riffs, and you know, we have both the
- 6:59the equal standing of you know, Johnny's vocals and guys vocals, and if
- 7:03you listen to the chorus, you get a nice molding of you know,
- 7:10Johnny and Guy together and it sounds so great. I did the lyric video
- 7:15for Zeitgeist, and I just couldn't stop like listening to the chorus. Even
- 7:19though I had listened to it over and over again and I arsed it over
- 7:21and over again, I just couldn't stop listening to it. It was absolutely
- 7:27divine. I loved it. I loved it, and yeah, I think,
- 7:31you know, even Zeitgeist is sort of a representation for what we should
- 7:35be writing in the future, you know, more marriage of these vocals going
- 7:40forward. It's it's really exciting. Actually, even though, like, whilst
- 7:45doing the lyric video, I was just like, because there's a bridge bit
- 7:48in the song and Johnny's during the bridge he sing He's singing a lot of
- 7:53lyrics, and I'm just like, why did you write so many lyrics?
- 7:57I was getting really angry, no reason, because they're great lyrics. I'm
- 8:03just like the timing of it. I'm like, no, he doesn't say
- 8:05that they're no, No, he does say that I added, ah,
- 8:11that's the name of the game videos. Lyrically, Zeitgeist is my favorite song
- 8:15of the album. Lyrically, it's my favorite lyrics a lyrics that I've ever
- 8:18written. It's there's a lot of double and triple meanings with the lyrics within
- 8:26Zeitgeist. I like to write cryptically, especially with my lyrics. A lot
- 8:28of lyrics are very cryptic, so there's like double and triple meanings in some
- 8:35lines. It's really it's really fun, and I like to even hide it.
- 8:39Like even like there's a line called instacle in This Inventor which is Latin,
- 8:43and it's lastly Latin for a verse in the Bible which says in filth
- 8:48it will be found, and also in Genesis, apparently God made humans out
- 8:54of dirt and another word for dirt is like filth, so it's like in
- 8:58humanity it will be found. So it's like there's it's buried between from like
- 9:01the service level with Latin sounds cool, but then it's buried under like a
- 9:05Bible, like a line that's in English, which is also a Bible verse,
- 9:09which is also another metaphor reference to humanity. So there's like actually like
- 9:13a controllable, like you know, level to just one line. So I
- 9:18like to write a lot like that. I like to make it cryptic,
- 9:22mystical. You need to do a little bit of digging to actually get the
- 9:26true meaning behind some of the words and the lines within songs. And that's
- 9:31why I really like Zeigeist. I spent a lot of time sitting there actually
- 9:35crafting the lines making it sound poetic as well just by itself. So made
- 9:41the lyrics sound like really poetic play even put them into the music. That's
- 9:45what's the facial existence is out now does So what's next for a Scarion Wild
- 9:50gigs? We I and the band, you know, really I want to
- 9:56get out there and do some gigs. We've got two gigs lined up.
- 9:58We've got one in Bala rat on tenth at Bolta with all of Resists,
- 10:03and we have the eleventh straight pretty much to day after some resounds and studios
- 10:09with Hybrid Nightmare, and then after that we are looking to find a Melbourne
- 10:15gigs to launch this album. We really are hoping to find a venue that
- 10:20will take us or a band that will take us as well to watch this
- 10:22thing. We really want to do that and we are looking forward to doing
- 10:26that. So yeah, gigs, gigs, gigs basically yeah gigs, and
- 10:31we're going to start writing album number three, hopefully around January, I think
- 10:35Betty Boys. Yeah yo, Well, thanks very much for joining us today.
- 10:41It's been a pleasure as again to know. The album Towards the Future
