- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the Complete Stoic Death Meditation.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: This practice aims to help you confront and overcome the fear of death, thereby reducing other anxieties in your life as you do so.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: By facing our deepest fears, death being the primary one, we can live more fully and freely.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: This meditation draws upon the wisdom of Stoic philosophers like Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius, guiding you through a deeply transformative experience that is designed to shift the way you perceive death and dying.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: Many philosophers, particularly Stoics, believe that the root cause of all anxieties is the fear of death.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: The idea is if we can overcome this primal fear, other anxieties will diminish.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: The first step in dealing with any kind of anxiety, including death, is to sit with it, to familiarize ourselves with it, and to understand it deeply.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Seneca reminds us, quote, he who fears death will never do anything worthy of a living man.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: So let's start by examining the big picture of your life.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Think of the details that make you you Who are your key friends and key family members?
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: What are you passionate about?
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: What are some of your bad habits?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: What are your dreams and aspirations and stresses?
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Do you have any talents or gifts?
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: What are your memories and foods you love and foods you dislike?
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: All of these details will eventually fade into oblivion when you die.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Even if someone spent every day with you, they would never fully understand your unique experience.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: This story, your story, will go too.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Epictetus said, quote, It is not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Reflect on this as we proceed.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Imagine that you have ten years left to live?
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: How would you spend them?
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Would you do anything differently?
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Would you fear the approaching death?
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: Sit with this and be mindful of your breath as you contemplate your death in ten years.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: Visualize the actions you would take and see yourself making choices big and small to live those last ten years as fully as possible.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Death can happen anytime.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Statistically, you could die within the next year.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: How would that make you feel?
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: How would you spend the next year?
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: What would you change or keep the same?
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Consider these questions deeply.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Feel the gravity of this time frame.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Now let's increase the intensity.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Imagine you have just one day left.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Think about the stresses and anxieties you have.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: What do they mean knowing your life will end today?
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Are you happy with the life you've lived so far?
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Would you live today differently?
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Visualize spending your last day.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: What would you do?
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Who would you be with?
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: What words would you say?
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Feel the urgency and clarity that comes with this contemplation.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Now let's visualize your own death.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Imagine that you have died.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Look down at your body and see it starting to decay.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Flesh, blood, and bone will degrade into the earth.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Bones will turn to dust and be blown away in the wind.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: How do you feel looking at your body?
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Marcus Aurelius reminds us Consider that before long you will be nobody and nowhere, nor will anything which you now behold exist, nor one of those who are now alive.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Contemplate this truth without fear, recognizing it's just a part of nature.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Observe your body's transformation back into the earth.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Recognize this as a natural process.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: Feel the interconnectedness of all life and its cycles.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: How did you feel before you were born?
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: If not, why would you be unhappy about the end of life as you now know it?
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Seneca said that death is a release from all suffering.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Reflect on this and find peace in the natural cycle of life and death.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: Visualize the state before your birth.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Feel the calm of non-existence, and transfer that calm to your contemplation of death.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Before we end this visualization, try to fill your heart with love.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Think of someone in your life with whom you have an easy relationship.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Wish them well, wish them happiness, success, health, and safety.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Now remember that you are currently alive, and as Marcus Aurelius said, when you arise in the morning, think of what a privilege it is to be alive, to think, to enjoy, to love, and let this love fill you as we conclude our meditation.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Feel the warmth and lightness that this loving kindness brings to your heart.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Let it expand within you, and note that it is important to mix compassion with the difficult work we do on death, fear, anxiety, or grief.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: The opposite side of death is love, not life.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: That is the counterbalance.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Reflect on this truth as you go forward.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Contemplate now the balance between life's sorrows and joys, its endings and beginnings.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Carry this compassion with you, allowing it to soften your fears and anxieties.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Thank you for practicing with me today, and remember this meditation is not just an exercise but a way to live a life of tranquility, reason, and resilience.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: May you find strength in focusing on what you can control, and peace in accepting what you cannot.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Take a moment now to ground yourself, feel your body, and take a deep breath.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Slowly open your eyes whenever you're ready.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: This is the end of the meditation.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Have a serene and thoughtful day.
