- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Well, I was going to do some sports over the weekend,
- 0:09Speaker 2: but life.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Got, you know, hectic, and then of course yesterday no
- 0:13Speaker 3: sports because of October seventh. So today to break out
- 0:17Speaker 3: the sports talk again with my colleague and weekly co host,
- 0:21Speaker 3: lou Terminello.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It's Terminello's take, Louis, how are you.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Today, Alex's good to be with you, mixed sir. I'm well,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and it's a very very interesting Tuesday. For sure enough.
- 0:36Speaker 1: To start with the.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Fact that fifteen years ago it was announced I was
- 0:39Speaker 3: getting my own radio show, and here we are fifteen
- 0:42Speaker 3: years later, the Sports Hour became one leg up.
- 0:45Speaker 2: How about that? And you're part of that reinvention.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Louis, Well, thank you, thank you for having me as always,
- 0:51Speaker 1: and congratulations to you. We do a great job, not
- 0:53Speaker 1: only with the sports angle, but with all the other
- 0:58Speaker 1: all the other areas where you interviewed some terrific people
- 1:02Speaker 1: in the sports world and the political world and the
- 1:04Speaker 1: medical world. Obviously it's a well rounded, well rounded network
- 1:12Speaker 1: you've put together. And congratulations, thank.
- 1:15Speaker 2: You, thank you.
- 1:16Speaker 3: So let's talk about this because obviously the big news
- 1:18Speaker 3: of the day is out of what Floram Park, where
- 1:21Speaker 3: the Jets finally made the decision let go of Robert
- 1:25Speaker 3: Sala fire him. Apparently it was escort out of the
- 1:27Speaker 3: building to not even getting a chance to talk to
- 1:30Speaker 3: his team.
- 1:31Speaker 2: What a turn.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Of events after really a bad two weeks of football.
- 1:38Speaker 1: It wasn't bad two weeks of football. And you know,
- 1:40Speaker 1: the funny thing is as bad as the Denver game was,
- 1:45Speaker 1: which was played in that rainstorm, and as as inept
- 1:50Speaker 1: as the Broncos offense was, and the Jets couldn't couldn't
- 1:54Speaker 1: score a touchdown, which was incredible to me. If Greg
- 1:58Speaker 1: zerline that fifty yard field goal, I know it's fifty
- 2:02Speaker 1: yards in the rain, I understand it. I know we're
- 2:05Speaker 1: making fifty yarders into chip shots now. But if he
- 2:08Speaker 1: had made that shot, if he had made that field goal,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I who knows, if we might not be talking about
- 2:14Speaker 1: Stala being fired today. And you know they were a
- 2:17Speaker 1: play away if on Sunday, I don't know. On Sunday,
- 2:23Speaker 1: on that last Jet drive before the interception by Gilmore,
- 2:30Speaker 1: Garrett Wilson made a double move and Aaron Rodgers overthrew him. Now,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I don't know if they were not on the same
- 2:39Speaker 1: page if we're just a bad throw by Rogers, but
- 2:42Speaker 1: just to think, if he hits them, the Jets go
- 2:44Speaker 1: up in that game after being down seventeen to nothing.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And Salah probably isn't being mixed, scored scored out of
- 2:51Speaker 1: the building today. You know that being said there's this
- 2:57Speaker 1: is not a good day for the Jets. And I
- 2:59Speaker 1: know a lot of the gas bag pundits on ESPN
- 3:04Speaker 1: or Fox Sports won or on WFAN or ESPN eight
- 3:09Speaker 1: eighty in New York and nationwide. When you fire somebody,
- 3:17Speaker 1: it's failure, and the Jets, this is another mark of
- 3:21Speaker 1: failure for the New York Jets. You know, they say
- 3:25Speaker 1: he's a players coach. I don't know how much of
- 3:27Speaker 1: a player's coach was And you know I have Jet contacts.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Nobody ever told me that that the players walked all
- 3:35Speaker 1: over them. But you know, your record is what your
- 3:39Speaker 1: record is. And even though he never really had a
- 3:41Speaker 1: quarterback until this year, and this year he only had
- 3:44Speaker 1: that quarterback for five games, he's twenty and thirty six,
- 3:47Speaker 1: the expectations were greater. And I don't know what Jeff
- 3:53Speaker 1: Ulbrich is going to do. He's a terrific defensive coordinator.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Now he's going to have to handle a defense and
- 4:00Speaker 1: on the team. Obviously, I'll get some help from some
- 4:04Speaker 1: of the other defensive position coaches. I don't know if
- 4:07Speaker 1: they're going to add somebody bringing a defensive consultant or not.
- 4:12Speaker 1: But this is a big game coming up. They're one
- 4:14Speaker 1: game behind Buffalo. They went on Monday night for all
- 4:17Speaker 1: of the past two weeks, they went on Monday Night.
- 4:22Speaker 1: They had to tiewrit go with the Bills. Technically, they're
- 4:25Speaker 1: in first place after six weeks, so so.
- 4:29Speaker 3: I think I think they made this move because there
- 4:33Speaker 3: were some internal rumblings.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I'm sure.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I don't know if a rod is the Aaron Rodgers
- 4:38Speaker 3: the exact reason. But I want to mention to you
- 4:41Speaker 3: what what he Johnson said, because you mentioned about being.
- 4:43Speaker 2: A players coach.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Well, here's what Woodie Johnson said. Jeff Olbrick will serve
- 4:49Speaker 3: as our interim head coach for the remaining of the season.
- 4:52Speaker 3: He's a tough coach who has the respect of the
- 4:54Speaker 3: coaches and players on this team.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Is that a thing? It's salah be.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I mean, obviously here's the man who fired him today
- 5:05Speaker 1: and uh, these NFL owners, they don't like to lose
- 5:10Speaker 1: and what he's been losing for a long time. And uh,
- 5:14Speaker 1: he's you know, he's done his best to turn the
- 5:16Speaker 1: team around. Many people say he's a bad owner. Maybe
- 5:20Speaker 1: he is. I don't know how much owners unless uh
- 5:26Speaker 1: your tepper in Carolina have an effect on have an
- 5:31Speaker 1: effect on the team. But yeah, I would say, so
- 5:35Speaker 1: what you just read me, they might need somebody tougher
- 5:39Speaker 1: because Quincy Williams said Postgang and I was watching the
- 5:43Speaker 1: postgame on on s n Y said, somebody needs to
- 5:47Speaker 1: be accountable here, and there's too many guys both offensively
- 5:52Speaker 1: and defensively, and Alex the defense has done its job.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I mean they're all their second the league in giving
- 6:00Speaker 1: up yards per game, their second in the league in
- 6:04Speaker 1: points allowed per game. They gave up you know, they
- 6:09Speaker 1: gave up ten points to the Broncos, and they gave
- 6:11Speaker 1: up sixteen points to the Vikes, and the Vikings had
- 6:16Speaker 1: come in on a roll and Sam Donold had his
- 6:20Speaker 1: worst game on Sunday. That being said, the fact that
- 6:25Speaker 1: the Jets the last two weeks have dropped Aaron Rodgers
- 6:30Speaker 1: back one hundred and eight times and he threw fifty
- 6:34Speaker 1: seven passes on on Sunday or fifty seven dropbacks. You
- 6:40Speaker 1: do fifty four passes on Sunday after throwing forty two
- 6:43Speaker 1: last week. He got hit fourteen times. Last week, he
- 6:47Speaker 1: got hit eleven times last this week, that's twenty five
- 6:52Speaker 1: dropping back that many times each game. I don't care
- 6:56Speaker 1: if you're twenty five years old. I don't care if
- 6:58Speaker 1: you're forty years old. I don't care if you have
- 7:00Speaker 1: the best offensive line in the league, which the Jets
- 7:03Speaker 1: don't pass blocking. They've been okay, but you cannot win
- 7:08Speaker 1: that way at there's seventy one offensive plays on Sunday.
- 7:13Speaker 1: They ran only fourteen times. Yes, they ran only fourteen times,
- 7:17Speaker 1: probably because the offensive line can't even open a little
- 7:21Speaker 1: bit of a crack. Left talented guys like Breese Hall
- 7:26Speaker 1: or Braylen Allen run through. They used a short game
- 7:29Speaker 1: as a running game, rogers to a lot of short passes.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It's they got to get better, They got to get
- 7:37Speaker 1: more balanced on offense.
- 7:40Speaker 3: And I look at this move as something you mentioned
- 7:42Speaker 3: a little while ago, which is they're still in this So.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I look at this move as, hey know what.
- 7:46Speaker 3: We're going in a different direction now because we still
- 7:48Speaker 3: have a chance this season alone.
- 7:50Speaker 1: What do you think I think, I think you're right.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I think Woody Johnson, Joe Douglas, I'm sure. I consulted
- 7:57Speaker 1: with Joe Douglas, the general manager, and they want to
- 8:00Speaker 1: see the season get away. And as we watch these
- 8:03Speaker 1: NFL games each week, I mean, look again, what happens Sunday.
- 8:06Speaker 1: We talk about it every week. San Francisco blows at
- 8:09Speaker 1: ten point lead to the Arizona Cardinals at home. I mean,
- 8:14Speaker 1: you know, really, who would have who would have thought
- 8:16Speaker 1: thought that? So you anything can happen in these games.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And I know it's a cliche, anything can happen, but
- 8:25Speaker 1: anything can happen, and you gotta you gotta play it out.
- 8:29Speaker 1: How many times do Jets make the defense feel uncomfortable?
- 8:33Speaker 1: They don't make the defense feel uncomfortable. And that's the
- 8:36Speaker 1: thing that's been head scratching to me.
- 8:38Speaker 4: I thought we would see more of a diversified type offense,
- 8:44Speaker 4: and I know, going to see the offense that Nathaniel
- 8:47Speaker 4: Hackett and Aaron Rodgers.
- 8:49Speaker 1: Ran in Green Bay. But the NFL is different than
- 8:52Speaker 1: it was five years ago offensively, So they're doing nothing
- 8:56Speaker 1: to make the defense uncomfortable. The defense knows how to
- 9:00Speaker 1: figure out the Jet offense so far, but as you said,
- 9:03Speaker 1: there's still time. You know, I didn't think that sal
- 9:11Speaker 1: was gonna get fired this week. I wasn't sure if
- 9:14Speaker 1: you didn't that firing season because Whatody Johnson has never
- 9:16Speaker 1: done that in his twenty four years as owning the team.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Well, let's go across the stadium for a second, because yep,
- 9:24Speaker 3: there could have been another firing. I think you and
- 9:26Speaker 3: I talked about this earlier off air, and it's true
- 9:29Speaker 3: the Giants were a field goal block away from possibly
- 9:34Speaker 3: blowing another game in Seattle field goal block touchdown. But
- 9:38Speaker 3: if they did not win Sunday, if that did not happen,
- 9:42Speaker 3: are we seeing a different Giant coach too? I mean,
- 9:44Speaker 3: is that how chaotic it is an NFL football?
- 9:47Speaker 1: It's chaotic. I'm not sure about that because obviously the
- 9:51Speaker 1: expectations for the Giants are not going into the season
- 9:55Speaker 1: or not the expectations that the Jets had. I would
- 10:01Speaker 1: just say this if they had lost that game. Unfortunately
- 10:05Speaker 1: I didn't see I didn't see any of it except
- 10:08Speaker 1: one or two plays because I was focused on Mets
- 10:10Speaker 1: were playing at the same time. The seat that we
- 10:14Speaker 1: always talked about that was getting warmer, and Warmer would
- 10:17Speaker 1: have been getting hot. But that was a winnable game,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and they did a good job from what I saw
- 10:23Speaker 1: afterwards as I tried to piece everything together. They controlled
- 10:26Speaker 1: the clock for thirty seven minutes. And we talked about
- 10:29Speaker 1: last week how Seattle's defense is not very good. They
- 10:33Speaker 1: got they got walked on by Detroit for forty two points,
- 10:37Speaker 1: and the Giants took advantage of that by holding the
- 10:41Speaker 1: ball for thirty seven minutes. They did a great job.
- 10:44Speaker 1: The kid Tracy might be their best running back. He
- 10:48Speaker 1: might be their best running back, Alex we have to
- 10:50Speaker 1: look at him moving forward. You know, Singletary's a nice player,
- 10:53Speaker 1: but this kid might be a better running back. And
- 10:58Speaker 1: Daniel Jones, who I've always been a fan of, again
- 11:02Speaker 1: is he Is he an elite quarterback? No? Is he terrible? Novel?
- 11:06Speaker 1: He's not. You know, he's gonna be in his sleep
- 11:10Speaker 1: for a long time. And he played a fine game Sunday.
- 11:14Speaker 1: He played a fine game last week, you know, so
- 11:20Speaker 1: tonight and next week they play another winnable game against
- 11:24Speaker 1: the Bengals. Winnable because the Bengals can't stop anybody, and
- 11:27Speaker 1: if the Giants can hold the ball another thirty five
- 11:29Speaker 1: thirty six minutes to keep the ball away from from
- 11:33Speaker 1: Jeff Burrow, I mean Joe Burrow. They have a chance
- 11:38Speaker 1: to win the game. If they don't win the ballot
- 11:40Speaker 1: time possession, the Bengals will probably win a game. Not
- 11:44Speaker 1: because the Bengal defense is going to stop the Giants.
- 11:46Speaker 1: The Bengals are gonna just gonna score because they have
- 11:50Speaker 1: They have a terrific offensive team still, but their defense
- 11:53Speaker 1: is nowhere.
- 11:54Speaker 3: So as you know, I've been I've been critical at
- 11:57Speaker 3: times of Daniel Jones, but I feel bad for I
- 12:00Speaker 3: think the past drops have really increased this year, and
- 12:02Speaker 3: it's it's for no reason.
- 12:03Speaker 2: These guys catch the football for him.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Well, you're right, and uh, you know you just triggered something.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Even in the Jet game. Obviously Aaron Rodgers has as
- 12:15Speaker 1: chemistry with with Withlizard. But Lazard dropped four passes on
- 12:20Speaker 1: on on Sunday, Braylen Allen dropped one, and you're right,
- 12:24Speaker 1: he's got and they have the They all have these
- 12:27Speaker 1: gloves which are like bell crow. They gotta make these catches,
- 12:30Speaker 1: whether it's whether it's Rogers, Daniel Jones, whoever, they gotta
- 12:34Speaker 1: make those catches for Dylan Jumps. I'm telling you, I
- 12:37Speaker 1: I it's gonna be very interesting to see how this
- 12:39Speaker 1: Giant season plays out from the quarterback position, because as
- 12:42Speaker 1: they get closer to the end of the season, what
- 12:44Speaker 1: they're gonna do. Obviously they're ready to dump Daniel Jones
- 12:49Speaker 1: if they had draft, if they were able to move
- 12:51Speaker 1: up in the draft, and probably the guy they were
- 12:53Speaker 1: gonna look at was Drake Drake May. But I just
- 12:57Speaker 1: don't I mean, I don't know what the the total
- 13:02Speaker 1: criticism is of Daniel Jones. I really don't understand. Well.
- 13:08Speaker 3: I think now that the Commanders have a very certified
- 13:12Speaker 3: draft pick in Jane Daniels, it has a little pressure
- 13:15Speaker 3: to veterans like even Hurts and Jones and Prescott to
- 13:20Speaker 3: up their games. I think they're going to feel that
- 13:22Speaker 3: pressure from Washington more than other years in recent memory.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Loop. I mean, Alex, if you exit me, how much
- 13:32Speaker 1: you want to bet after five weeks the Washington Commanders
- 13:35Speaker 1: would be four and one, I would say I would
- 13:38Speaker 1: take that bet. So they surprised me. I mean, dan Quinn,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I was never a big fan of dan Quinn the coach,
- 13:44Speaker 1: but he's doing a fine job. They are a very
- 13:51Speaker 1: interesting launch. They really are. And all three quarterbacks played
- 13:55Speaker 1: well on on Sunday. All three rookie starting quarterbacks play
- 13:59Speaker 1: well on some And you know, I saw bon Nicks
- 14:03Speaker 1: live the week before Sunday. He was terrible. They won,
- 14:07Speaker 1: but he was terrible. I didn't see the game Sunday
- 14:11Speaker 1: except maybe a player or two, because again I was
- 14:13Speaker 1: focused on Mets. But from what I hear, and I'll
- 14:18Speaker 1: probably look at the replay at least highlight package this week,
- 14:22Speaker 1: it looked like bone Knicks has played a played a
- 14:25Speaker 1: terrific game and upped his game. And he has a
- 14:28Speaker 1: great offensive coach and a guy who's a great head
- 14:30Speaker 1: coach in Sean Payton, and the Broncos already have a
- 14:34Speaker 1: very solid defense. They'll be interesting to watch the next
- 14:39Speaker 1: couple of weeks.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Also, now you just mentioned the Mets, so perfect segue,
- 14:43Speaker 3: because this was supposed to be a big day at
- 14:46Speaker 3: City Field, not that it won't be, but the big
- 14:48Speaker 3: news they was supposed to be. The Mets are hosting
- 14:49Speaker 3: their first game at Cityfield in postseasons in twenty twenty two,
- 14:53Speaker 3: with a different kind of energy. Of course, the solid firing,
- 14:56Speaker 3: it's kind of taken away from that a little bit.
- 14:58Speaker 3: But nonetheless, tonight Game three, all LDS is tied at one.
- 15:03Speaker 3: But can the Mets break the ice and make it
- 15:05Speaker 3: two to one tonight?
- 15:07Speaker 1: Oh? I think they can. Like I said, I think
- 15:11Speaker 1: the Mets are as good as any team that's remaining
- 15:13Speaker 1: in the playoffs. Uh. I like the Padres. I think
- 15:17Speaker 1: they're really really good. But the Mets can beat anybody.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Uh it's when five oh waight comes tonight. Obviously everybody's
- 15:29Speaker 1: focused in New York is gonna be on this game.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Uh Solis firing by that Tin will be six to
- 15:33Speaker 1: seven fs all, then he'll be like old news. That's
- 15:37Speaker 1: how fast News tracked the news. Uh, the news topic's
- 15:40Speaker 1: last these days. Yeah, I think the Mets a great chance.
- 15:44Speaker 1: And I I mean Aaron Knowl is a terrific pitcher.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And I think that the Phillies have a tremendous starting rotation.
- 15:50Speaker 1: And can I see the Mets winging the next two games? Yes?
- 15:52Speaker 1: Can I see the Mets losing the next two games? Sure?
- 15:55Speaker 1: And if the Mets do lose the next two games,
- 15:56Speaker 1: will I be disappointed? I'll be disappointed, but I won't
- 15:59Speaker 1: be upset. This team has shown so much character. Just
- 16:03Speaker 1: coming back Sunday in the ninth inning, they found one
- 16:09Speaker 1: of their young players is now going to be uh,
- 16:12Speaker 1: you know, he's going to be a mainstay for the
- 16:13Speaker 1: next five ten years. And in Mark Vento's I mean,
- 16:18Speaker 1: I gotta and you know me, what.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Did I say last week? Call ab of the year?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Am I right?
- 16:23Speaker 1: Yeah? Oh? For the Mets, it absolutely was called up
- 16:25Speaker 1: of the year, no doubt about it, one hundred percent right,
- 16:28Speaker 1: And you scratched her head. He had a good training camp,
- 16:31Speaker 1: a good spring training. Uh, he was disappointed he didn't
- 16:34Speaker 1: come up with the with the team back at the
- 16:38Speaker 1: end of March. Maybe if he did, maybe that's would
- 16:40Speaker 1: have won a couple of more games. Same thing with
- 16:42Speaker 1: uh David Peterson, who I assume will start tomorrow again.
- 16:50Speaker 1: We've been waiting for David Peterson for a long time.
- 16:53Speaker 1: This year he it finally clicked. He had a fine year.
- 16:57Speaker 1: He missed the first seven weeks the season. If he
- 17:01Speaker 1: was there from the beginning of the year, how many
- 17:02Speaker 1: more wins would the Mets have? Just throwing it out there,
- 17:05Speaker 1: I mean, and you know, and and Francisco Alvarez I
- 17:09Speaker 1: think is just getting ready to take off. I mean,
- 17:13Speaker 1: I think you're gonna see a twenty five consistent thirty
- 17:16Speaker 1: home run hitter Alex I'd move his position. I would
- 17:21Speaker 1: move him to another position. What position, I don't know.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I don't know if he could DH because they'll be
- 17:26Speaker 1: looking for a new DH next year. J D. Martinez
- 17:30Speaker 1: is not going to be their DH, even though he's
- 17:33Speaker 1: done a good job, and he's done a good job
- 17:34Speaker 1: in the clubhouse. But you know, Alvarez is too valuable
- 17:41Speaker 1: to get foul tips on his shoulder to catch all
- 17:45Speaker 1: those games. If you want to make him the backup catcher,
- 17:47Speaker 1: maybe go out and get another catcher's a third string catcher.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I don't know. I would just I would move his
- 17:52Speaker 1: position where. That's something for the organization to figure out.
- 17:58Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, the last two years the Mets
- 18:02Speaker 1: have had a couple of good young people who have contributed.
- 18:06Speaker 1: And again they still have Brett Batty who broke his hand. Uh,
- 18:11Speaker 1: we'll see how he does next year or if they
- 18:14Speaker 1: use him in trade Bay. Oh, baby, that was the baby.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Was the one was the downfall?
- 18:22Speaker 3: No, Tonight's going to be exciting always when you're home
- 18:24Speaker 3: in the postseason again, I'm excited for how he Rose.
- 18:27Speaker 3: He was calling a home Mets game in the postseason,
- 18:31Speaker 3: his fifty year of radio. How cool is that for
- 18:33Speaker 3: a kid from Queens?
- 18:34Speaker 1: Am I right, Well, he's not. He's a He's a
- 18:38Speaker 1: kid from Queens. He's a meda historian. He's a fantastic
- 18:44Speaker 1: baseball play by play man. He uh the home run
- 18:50Speaker 1: that Peter A Lonso hit the other night. That call, anybody,
- 18:57Speaker 1: whether it's in all the all the broadcast, is that
- 19:00Speaker 1: being trained in Fordham, or at Syracuse, or anywhere in
- 19:03Speaker 1: a communications department throughout this country, they should get that call.
- 19:07Speaker 1: That call was perfect. That call was as perfect as
- 19:10Speaker 1: you can get. He described a home run. He described
- 19:13Speaker 1: him running around the base, He described the Mets waiting
- 19:16Speaker 1: at the home plate. He described as he walked into
- 19:18Speaker 1: the next doug Aut and other players were at the
- 19:20Speaker 1: top step. It was a perfect call by Howie Rose.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And I hope he has a couple more left than
- 19:24Speaker 1: them the rest of the series. And I'm sure he
- 19:27Speaker 1: does all right. Perfect call, Alex, perfect call.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Speaking on perfect calls, I want to just give a
- 19:32Speaker 3: shout out to mister Bob Wolfe, whose call will live
- 19:35Speaker 3: on forever of the perfect game today in nineteen fifty
- 19:38Speaker 3: six Don Larson's Perfect Game. I'm sure you know the
- 19:41Speaker 3: call that Bob Wolf did, and to call him a
- 19:43Speaker 3: friend was truly an honor and a privilege. And to
- 19:46Speaker 3: carry on his legacy every October eighth means something.
- 19:49Speaker 1: To me, Well it should. I was three and a
- 19:53Speaker 1: half years old on that day, so obviously I don't
- 19:58Speaker 1: remember that game, but I remember obviously I've seen the
- 20:02Speaker 1: clip thousand times, and I met Bob Wolf two or
- 20:05Speaker 1: three times briefly. But he was a gentleman even just
- 20:10Speaker 1: meeting him. Then. He was a great play by play announcer.
- 20:13Speaker 1: He called that game. He called the what many people
- 20:17Speaker 1: say is the greatest game in NFL history between the
- 20:21Speaker 1: Giants and the Colts, the nineteen fifty eight championship game,
- 20:25Speaker 1: the famous Amichi scores. That's him, That's Bob Wolf. He
- 20:29Speaker 1: was the play by play man on the Knicks nineteen
- 20:33Speaker 1: seventy team for TV Over the Era on Channel nine,
- 20:38Speaker 1: and he did a fantastic job. He was great. He
- 20:42Speaker 1: was great, and he was, like you say, with a
- 20:44Speaker 1: gentleman all the way through, all right.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Also a gentleman. Now we'll go to the Yankees series,
- 20:50Speaker 2: but also gentlemen way.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Over the years have been has been Bob Costas and
- 20:55Speaker 3: the under fire he's been getting, the the you know,
- 20:58Speaker 3: the the siege of attacks from even Yankee fans and
- 21:01Speaker 3: some baseball fans for the way he's called the series.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Has sad in me.
- 21:05Speaker 3: But I will say it's been a little tough to
- 21:07Speaker 3: listen to only because he starts getting on these tangents.
- 21:10Speaker 2: But I don't think I can follow.
- 21:12Speaker 3: But you know, I kind of feel bad for him
- 21:14Speaker 3: too because everybody's going after him. Have you been following
- 21:16Speaker 3: the backlash to Bob Goss's calling me seriod?
- 21:19Speaker 1: Actually it actually started last year during the Division Series,
- 21:24Speaker 1: and I think last year he did the last year
- 21:26Speaker 1: he did the NL Division Series and started it started
- 21:30Speaker 1: last started last year. Bob kass Is obviously is a
- 21:35Speaker 1: baseball historian. He's probably the best studio sports host of
- 21:40Speaker 1: all time. He's a very good play by play announcer. Yes,
- 21:46Speaker 1: I think he's lost a little bit off his play
- 21:48Speaker 1: by play fastball. I don't think the presence that a
- 21:52Speaker 1: that a play by play announcer has is there with
- 21:55Speaker 1: him like it used to be. But he's still he's
- 21:57Speaker 1: still a brilliant huncer. And I think sometimes what we
- 22:02Speaker 1: why we've seen people criticize him the last te years.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I think he's kind of lost his concentration. Instead of
- 22:07Speaker 1: just concentrating on on on the game itself, what's going
- 22:12Speaker 1: on on the field, he's trying to make the description
- 22:16Speaker 1: more flowered flowery than it should be. I mean, I mean,
- 22:22Speaker 1: I listened to a little bit of these of these games,
- 22:25Speaker 1: and yeah, he sounds a little bit off to me.
- 22:29Speaker 3: You know what it also could be is people forget
- 22:30Speaker 3: he was an interviewer after calling the Yankees World Series
- 22:34Speaker 3: running ninety eight and I think it was a ninety
- 22:36Speaker 3: nine as well, But then he went into the interviewing
- 22:38Speaker 3: world and maybe doing interviews for twenty years through him
- 22:41Speaker 3: of his play by play.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Is that possible?
- 22:43Speaker 1: It is possible, Alex, And he's a brilliant interviewer. I mean,
- 22:48Speaker 1: whether he did his national radio show every Sunday night, COSSA,
- 22:51Speaker 1: his Coast to Coast which was as a must listen
- 22:55Speaker 1: I listened to probably just about every Sunday night. His
- 23:00Speaker 1: power of recall is off the charts. But like you said,
- 23:04Speaker 1: he's not he doesn't do He's not doing one hundred
- 23:07Speaker 1: and forty games a year on TV like the Gary Cohen,
- 23:12Speaker 1: you know, or a Michael Kay or Dan Arcello. He's
- 23:17Speaker 1: just not and uh I think he also he's lost
- 23:19Speaker 1: a little bit off his play by play fastball. But
- 23:22Speaker 1: that being said, do I think he deserves the criticism
- 23:25Speaker 1: that he's been getting the last two postseasons, No, I
- 23:28Speaker 1: do not.
- 23:31Speaker 2: No, it's it's rough.
- 23:32Speaker 3: And you know, Ron Darling is always solid on s
- 23:34Speaker 3: n Y, but even I guess he's getting a little
- 23:37Speaker 3: heat too for his role as the color commentator.
- 23:40Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 23:41Speaker 3: When you're on the bigger stage, it's a different kind
- 23:43Speaker 3: of market you're dealing with, that's for sure.
- 23:45Speaker 2: But let's go to the game at hand.
- 23:46Speaker 3: I think the most interesting stats are the fact that
- 23:49Speaker 3: Judge and Witt Junior, the m v P and MVP
- 23:52Speaker 3: runner up, have completely struggled, which you called at least
- 23:56Speaker 3: on the uh on on the Judge side, I didn't
- 24:00Speaker 3: expect with Junior to also go cold.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Yeah. I figured with Junior as great as he is
- 24:06Speaker 1: and not that he's gonna be under the radar screen,
- 24:09Speaker 1: but would have been a little bit under the radar
- 24:11Speaker 1: in the first two games. Yeah, I mean, he's oh
- 24:13Speaker 1: for ten Judge has one hit and it's a ground bawl.
- 24:16Speaker 1: The third that he that he beat out a slower
- 24:19Speaker 1: roll of the third which broke I think an over
- 24:22Speaker 1: twenty two. Now the Yankees turn two out of three
- 24:25Speaker 1: alex And while the Yankees are still an overwhelming favorite
- 24:29Speaker 1: and still have a much better team than the Royals,
- 24:32Speaker 1: anything can happen in two out of three anything. We
- 24:35Speaker 1: saw it last week with Detroit and Houston. Detroit got
- 24:39Speaker 1: a great game from Tariq Scrubul again and they had
- 24:42Speaker 1: to win, just like Detroit got yesterday. And then the
- 24:46Speaker 1: next day they went to a bullpen game and De
- 24:49Speaker 1: Troy was able to win it against Houston. There's pressure
- 24:55Speaker 1: on the Yankees to be sure. Maybe getting away from
- 24:57Speaker 1: New York will be better for them. Sometimes teams play
- 25:00Speaker 1: Brett better on the road. Same thing for Philly. I
- 25:03Speaker 1: think Philly might play better at City Field than they
- 25:07Speaker 1: do at Citizens Ben Park because just look at Sunday's game.
- 25:11Speaker 1: The first two times up, Nick Castellanos made out he
- 25:15Speaker 1: was getting booed from the fans. In the last three
- 25:18Speaker 1: times up, he hit the home run, he got the
- 25:21Speaker 1: base it and then got to get winning base it.
- 25:24Speaker 1: All in rally innings, so it's sometimes tough to play
- 25:29Speaker 1: at home. So we'll see. But you know, obviously I also.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Think the Yangs should have gone with Heel yesterday or
- 25:37Speaker 3: Schmidt and not Rodn because I just thought Heel was
- 25:41Speaker 3: a stronger starter to go for in Game two.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you know what I think about Rodan.
- 25:48Speaker 1: As somebody said this morning, the Yankees have the highest
- 25:53Speaker 1: paid starring pitcher in baseball. They have the highest paid
- 25:55Speaker 1: number two pitcher in baseball and done. I mean, you
- 26:01Speaker 1: talk about it hitting this guy. I mean, you never
- 26:04Speaker 1: know what you're gonna get for this guy, anything for
- 26:06Speaker 1: any you know what you're gonna get. I would not
- 26:09Speaker 1: want my life on the line with him, at least
- 26:12Speaker 1: if it goes to Game five. They have Cole who
- 26:15Speaker 1: and you were there on Saturday and I cold it
- 26:17Speaker 1: and have it on Saturday night. He was he didn't
- 26:19Speaker 1: have a command, which was surprising to me because he
- 26:23Speaker 1: finished the season so well. So we'll see. But it's
- 26:27Speaker 1: two out of three, and if the Yankee starts squeezing
- 26:32Speaker 1: those bats tier come Saturday morning, come Friday night around
- 26:36Speaker 1: at eleven o'clock, it could be over. I don't think
- 26:40Speaker 1: it will be, but it could be.
- 26:42Speaker 2: And as I said my last show, they have the
- 26:44Speaker 2: home field advantage.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Just see what they do with it, right, So they
- 26:46Speaker 3: gotta they get bounds from the LDS.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Is that a firewall offense for Boone and Cashman or what.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I think? More for Boone than cash I would say,
- 27:00Speaker 1: But the Yankees love The Yankees love Boon. He fits
- 27:03Speaker 1: there their criteria, you know there there of following the analytics.
- 27:10Speaker 1: But again, let's face it, Alex, we talked about it
- 27:12Speaker 1: all year. It's last year. The one thing the Yankees,
- 27:16Speaker 1: the Yankees, the New York Yankees. The one thing that
- 27:18Speaker 1: that that they really aren't They don't pay attention to detail,
- 27:22Speaker 1: whether it's base running, whether it's a poor decision on
- 27:26Speaker 1: a on a throw, and that's got to be on
- 27:32Speaker 1: somebody's got to pay for that. That's and it's Boom
- 27:34Speaker 1: in all likelihood. But maybe they maybe they don't care
- 27:37Speaker 1: about that. Maybe they still would rather have Boon because
- 27:40Speaker 1: he fits there. Uh, you know, their profile working with
- 27:44Speaker 1: the analytics team, I don't know, but all I know
- 27:47Speaker 1: is that it's really hard to believe that. And again,
- 27:50Speaker 1: this is just the first year for Carlismandoza. He was
- 27:53Speaker 1: in the Yankee organization for fifteen years, and he's done
- 27:56Speaker 1: a very good job. Now I do question him how
- 27:59Speaker 1: he handled a Sunday with Diaz coming in and being
- 28:06Speaker 1: afraid to pitch to and and uh, the Mendozo don't
- 28:10Speaker 1: want to pitch to Bryce Harper. I don't get that.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I mean, he struck out on the first inning, he
- 28:15Speaker 1: made out the next time up, Yeah, hit the home run.
- 28:19Speaker 1: And if you're gonna put him on the eighth inning
- 28:21Speaker 1: when the Mets up four to three, why would you
- 28:24Speaker 1: have Diaz throw four pitches that I can get a
- 28:27Speaker 1: picture out of sync. Just walk them if you want
- 28:30Speaker 1: to do that, I woulded of. I would have tried
- 28:33Speaker 1: to get him out and if by some chance he
- 28:36Speaker 1: hits one out, it's four four. But by putting him on,
- 28:40Speaker 1: which basically wasn't intentional walk, then Castalanos got a hit.
- 28:44Speaker 1: And then then then Scott hit the triple down the
- 28:47Speaker 1: left field line, and that's But I'm just surprised that
- 28:52Speaker 1: the Yankees with Carlos Mendoza in their organization the last
- 28:56Speaker 1: fifteen years, the last four years as their bench coach,
- 29:00Speaker 1: I haven't taken a look at him because I'm very
- 29:02Speaker 1: impressed by by Carlos Mendoza.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Team all the way to the NLDS so far.
- 29:08Speaker 1: So there's that.
- 29:09Speaker 3: There's something to say about that. Hey, you know, interesting
- 29:13Speaker 3: storyline today, it's being a baseball because we always talk
- 29:17Speaker 3: about memories of nostalgia. Louis Tians unfortunately passing away today.
- 29:22Speaker 3: But any memories, Well I have you today on Terminelo's
- 29:24Speaker 3: take of Louis Tian.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Well, it's funny. It's funny you asked me about the
- 29:31Speaker 1: now late great Louis Tians. My first, my first major
- 29:35Speaker 1: league game they ever went to. It was in the
- 29:38Speaker 1: original Yankee Stadium, not the renovated one, the one that
- 29:42Speaker 1: was built in nineteen twenty three. It was. It was
- 29:44Speaker 1: June of nineteen sixty four. It was a Yankee doubleheader
- 29:48Speaker 1: against the then Cleveland Indians. The Yankees won the first
- 29:51Speaker 1: game six to two. In the second game, somebody was
- 29:57Speaker 1: making his first major league start for the Cleveland Indians.
- 30:00Speaker 1: It was a right handed by the name of Luis Tians.
- 30:04Speaker 1: He beat the Yankees three nothing. The Yankees won the
- 30:06Speaker 1: Pennant that year. The Indians were middle of the road team.
- 30:09Speaker 1: He pitched a complete game, three nothing shut out at
- 30:12Speaker 1: Yankee Statum it was also back day at Yankee Stadium,
- 30:15Speaker 1: over seventy one thousand people. Alex, I remember like it
- 30:18Speaker 1: was yesterday. So it's the fact that you asked me
- 30:20Speaker 1: that question. On memories of Louis Tian that's obviously my
- 30:24Speaker 1: last thing memory, my first memory of him. He was
- 30:27Speaker 1: a great clutch pitcher. He gave the Red Fits in
- 30:30Speaker 1: a play in that World Series in seventy five. He's
- 30:33Speaker 1: a great Red Sox. He's a great Indian and he
- 30:36Speaker 1: putched a little bit for the Yankees at the end. Yeah. Great.
- 30:40Speaker 1: He's one of those borderline Hall of Famers, the Hall
- 30:43Speaker 1: of very good, but an outstanding, an outstanding pitcher and
- 30:50Speaker 1: really hard to hit.
- 30:53Speaker 3: I have to go back and watch some of his
- 30:55Speaker 3: tape because I heard he was just an overall incredible player.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Hall of Famer, Right.
- 31:00Speaker 1: He's a borderline Hall of Fame. He hasn't. He hasn't.
- 31:03Speaker 1: He's not there yet, and I think it's gonna be
- 31:07Speaker 1: hard to him to get in. But again, all, let's
- 31:08Speaker 1: stick with everybody in the Hall of Fame these days.
- 31:10Speaker 1: So heyby one of these days we'll do a show
- 31:12Speaker 1: on on the Hall of Fame, the Baseball Hall of.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Fame, so all right, Well, one last thing I know
- 31:19Speaker 3: NHL starts this week is the rejection of an eight
- 31:21Speaker 3: year deal from Shusterkin A big deal yet, I.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Mean, you know he has one year left. Everybody's making
- 31:25Speaker 2: a big deal about this.
- 31:26Speaker 1: What do you think it's negotiation. It's not a big deal.
- 31:31Speaker 1: The Ranger are gonna sign them. He's the best player
- 31:34Speaker 1: on the team. They'll they'll work it out. There's no
- 31:39Speaker 1: way that the Rangers are gonna blow this, No way,
- 31:44Speaker 1: He's too good.
- 31:46Speaker 3: We might have a surprise guest from the Rangers ninety
- 31:49Speaker 3: four era. We have to keep people posted about that, right, Louis,
- 31:52Speaker 3: That would be exciting.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I would love I hopefully that comes through. That would
- 31:57Speaker 1: that would be that would be great if we get
- 32:01Speaker 1: we get the person from the nineteen ninety four Ranger team.
- 32:03Speaker 3: And again, actually, anyway, Louis, thanks for joining me today.
- 32:11Speaker 3: Any last thoughts this week on Terminilo's take?
- 32:15Speaker 1: No, I think obviously, next Monday night will be interesting
- 32:19Speaker 1: when Buffalo comes to MetLife Stadium the rest of the
- 32:22Speaker 1: week to see if when we talk next week, if
- 32:25Speaker 1: the Mets and Yankees will still be playing baseball. You know,
- 32:29Speaker 1: they both have a they both have a coin to
- 32:34Speaker 1: us chance of making it. The Yankees are like more
- 32:36Speaker 1: to advance than the Mets do. But it's it's gonna
- 32:40Speaker 1: be interesting week of sports. Like you said that the
- 32:42Speaker 1: hockey season starts this week and exciting times. October is
- 32:47Speaker 1: always exciting.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Well there you go, Lude, thanks for joining this week.
- 32:52Speaker 3: On your hit, Terminilo's take is why we do this
- 32:55Speaker 3: show fifteen years in the running because there's always news
- 32:58Speaker 3: breaking in the sports world.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Absolutely, Alex, it's what keeps us going. Thanks for joining, lou,
- 33:07Speaker 1: Thank you, Alex MHM.
