- 3:52Location, Vicksburg, Virginia, purpose well. It all started as an
- 3:55investigation of a burglary at the Plantation Hotel that was out of the way.
- 4:00I happened to run across a girl having an argument with a man in the
- 4:02hotel parking lot. She asked me to help her. I did. Girl
- 4:06suddenly gets sick and dies poison. I stay around to help find out who
- 4:11she is. I don't know that, but I do know that she had
- 4:15a thirty eight in her purse three bullets recently fired expense account. I to
- 4:20my two dollars camp fare from the Plantation Hotel the two miles into Vicksburg City
- 4:25Hall in Room two twenty, as per instructions of Sergeant Peter's I felt more
- 4:30than a little guilty by passing Lieutenant Jim Aikins, who had questioned me earlier
- 4:33about the case. Yes, Sergeant Peter's that's right. Going to help you,
- 4:39sir, I hope so like to know if this gun has been registered
- 4:43with you people you always have a look you just buy it? Uh?
- 4:47Yeah, got your bill to sail with you? What do you have to
- 4:50have one? You should? Who'd you buy it from? Oh that's all
- 4:55I met in a bar. Have you a permit to carry this weapon?
- 4:58Well? No, I haven't you going to carry it? Oh? No?
- 5:00No? Then why did you buy it? Oh? Just wanted it,
- 5:03that's ALLID Is there a law against there? No, no, that
- 5:09there's a law against practically every other thing about a gun. You you want
- 5:13to read those numbers oft to me? Sure? J JJ dash four seven,
- 5:18six, nine nine, and then there's an X okay make coat caliber
- 5:29thirty eight automatic seven shot. Yeah. Here, you'll have to fill this
- 5:33out. Pencils over there. This will take a minute for me to check
- 5:42it took fifteen minutes. In the meantime, I filled out the form which
- 5:46notified the Vicksburg Police that I was in possession of the above describe weapon,
- 5:49that I did not wish to apply for a permit to carry it, and
- 5:53so forth and so forth. After that I stood around and smoked a cigarette
- 5:57and wondered if I should step downstairs and tell Lieutenant Jimmy Akens that I had
- 6:00found Jane Doe's purse and the gun. But before I had time to make
- 6:03up my mind, here they go. The gun was purchased in nineteen fifty
- 6:09by the Piedmont Banking Service. That's a local armored truck outfit over on Maple
- 6:14Street. The gun was permitted for carrying to Raymond W. O'Connell, two
- 6:18thirty two Polk Street. This city, nice, Raymond O'Connell. Yeah,
- 6:24anything else, that's all. Thanks. That was when I could have,
- 6:32but didn't walk downstairs to Lieutenant Agan's office. Instead, I walked outside with
- 6:36a gun in my pocket on the slip of paper containing the name and address
- 6:40of the man who had carried it, Raymond O'Connell. Expense account item nine
- 6:45twenty five dollars deposit on a rented car to get me to two thirty two
- 6:48Polk Street. Oh, Paul, down, you're early. I'm hardly ready.
- 7:10Hello. Oh, I was expecting someone else. I'm so sorry you're
- 7:15not Paul, are you? I'm afraid not. My name is Johnny Dollar.
- 7:19Oh, mister Dollar. That's right. Well, what can I do
- 7:25for you, mister Dollar? I'm looking for Raymond O'Connell. Ray, Yes,
- 7:32coming inside, mister Dollar. Thank you. I really didn't mean to
- 7:38throw myself at you at the door. I thought you were someone else I'm
- 7:42expecting. Ah, I'm Terry, Terry, Teresa carry O'Connell. Mister Dollar.
- 7:51Oh, his wife, I'm Ray's widow. What raised dead? Mister
- 7:58Dollar passed away or a year ago? It was pneumonia. Oh, I'm
- 8:03sorry, missus O'Connor. Please call me Terry. You had no way of
- 8:07knowing about him, I'm sure, and please don't be uncomfortable. A great
- 8:11many of Ray's friends from the Service come by who have no idea that he's
- 8:15dead. Were you and his company too? Oh? Just a men of
- 8:16missus O'Connell. You had so many friends and met so many people while I
- 8:20was in the service, and really there was no way for you to not
- 8:22understand. Missus O'Connell, I never know to drink and we'll talk. Where
- 8:26did you serve with Ray? You know, he finally became a pilot.
- 8:31Would you like to drink? She was young and dark and very pretty,
- 8:39and as the widow of a man who died rather suddenly. She was doing
- 8:41her best to put me at my ease. I would have told her I
- 8:46was there checking out the registration on a thirty eighth that have been used by
- 8:48her dead husband. I would have told her. I found a gun in
- 8:50the purse of an unidentified dead girl I'd met the night before. But she
- 8:56was trying to be polite, mistaking me for a friend of her dead husband.
- 8:58And I saw the picture in the frame of the mantel, a broad,
- 9:01smiling face that belonged to a man I've met in the parking lot of
- 9:05the Plantation Hotel, an unidentified man who had been arguing with the dead girl.
- 9:09The words on the picture said to Terry, all my love. You
- 9:16know him Paul. Paul, Yes, Paul dmmon. I think I met
- 9:22him once. I really didn't know his name. Was he a friend of
- 9:26your husband of race? No? No, he never knew Ray. He's
- 9:31a dollar, mister, Paul, is a real dollar. After Ray died,
- 9:37I tried something very foolish. I tried to end my life and then
- 9:43Paul came into it. He's been very lovely to me. We're well.
- 9:50I don't know why. I shouldn't tell you we're going to be married.
- 9:56I think that's fine, Terry. Do you really sure? I'm glad you
- 10:01say that. I'm not the most courageous person in the world. I suppose
- 10:07Ray mentioned our lives together. It was perfect with Ray, mister Dawler,
- 10:11perfect. But now Ray's gone, and I've been able to face that.
- 10:18I think I'm going to find a new life with Paul. You must meet
- 10:22him. He'll be here soon. We're dining out to night. Perhaps you
- 10:26will join us. Well, thank you, mister o Connor, but I
- 10:28can't make it to night. How long will you be in Vicksburg? I
- 10:31don't know exactly where are you're staying the Plantation Hotel? Or perhaps I could
- 10:37give you a ring and we could make it another night. I know you
- 10:39won't talk about Ray. Of course Paul understands. I'm sure he does.
- 10:45He's truly a wonderful person. He hadn't looked very wonderful the night before,
- 10:54standing in the parking lot arguing with a girl who had died. But then
- 10:58that was my side of the picture. I wasn't complete, and somebody still
- 11:03had to explain the thirty eight of the three bullets missing I left Terry O'Connell,
- 11:07went outside and bought an evening paper, and then sat in my rented
- 11:09car reading it. The photographer at the morgue had done a good job.
- 11:13The unidentified girl's picture was on page one. I was reading the story over
- 11:18a second time when a dark business coupe pulled up behind me, and Paul
- 11:22Damren got out, heading for Terry O'Connell's doorway. Just a minute, just
- 11:28a minute, Oh Paul, what you? Yeah? Me and I love
- 11:33Damren? What are you doing here? How'd you know my name? Or
- 11:37are you some professional gun soul coming around to sock me again? I still
- 11:41don't stop it with you, Dammar. And my name's Johnny Dollar. I
- 11:43want you to tell me who that girl was last night in the parking lot,
- 11:46the one you had the big argument with. Eh. Oh, well
- 11:50you were the big hero there butting in where it was none of your business.
- 11:54I didn't like it then, night, right, simmred down, Well
- 11:56you who was she? Come on? What's her name to you? Okay,
- 12:01okay, it's Amy, Amy Durant, Amy Durant. Yeah, we
- 12:07work at the same office. Now, look, Buster, I'm not afraid
- 12:11of you, but I I don't want any trouble. See, So if
- 12:16you'll just go somewhere else in with you, how does Amy Duran tying with
- 12:20Teresa O'Connell. Look, I don't know who you are, what you're after,
- 12:24but you've certainly got your nerve of answering me. Pukay okay, Terry's
- 12:31Amy's sister satisfied. I don't know who are you anyhow, A policeman or
- 12:37something. My name is Johnny Dollar. I'm here because because if you aren't,
- 12:39I want to know what right you have to ask me all these questions?
- 12:41Cool off, will you? I've been trying to find out who she
- 12:45is because last night, after you went off, we had a drink together.
- 12:48Then she got sick and I took her to a hospital. She died
- 12:52there. She died. She's lying in the morgue right now, unidentified.
- 12:56It was some kind of poison that killed her. Amy dead. No,
- 13:03I don't believe it. It's in the paper the nights. The police are
- 13:09trying to identify her right now. I can't believe it. Poison, Oh
- 13:18Dollar, I didn't think Amy was that desperate. There was a way out.
- 13:24She could have solved it without this way out of what. There was
- 13:28no need for her to do this. I told her I'd help her.
- 13:33I had no ideas she poison to Terry. No, not yet. I've
- 13:41got to tell her before she sees it like this in the newspaper. It'll
- 13:46be awful for a dollar awful. But I apologize for the way I acted
- 13:50the way I was last night. I was upset. I can see now
- 13:56you're trying to help. Now, let me go in and break this to
- 14:01Terry. Call me later here my card, call me. I had to
- 14:11admit that Paul Dammeran's concern seemed as genuine as a surprise, he rushed up
- 14:16to be admitted to the O'Connell house. After he was inside the door,
- 14:18I went back to my car and took out the thirty eight automatic that had
- 14:22led me to the sister of Amy O'Connell. Three bullets still missing. I
- 14:26drove downtown to the Vicksburg Police station to turn the gun into Lieutenant Agins and
- 14:30tell him the whole story as I know it, how I'd found the gun
- 14:33and the dead girl's purse, how I'd managed to find out a name,
- 14:35The three missing bullets, and other unanswered questions were up to the police.
- 14:43Yeah. Well, oh, hi, Dolla, I thought you'd left town.
- 14:48Joel. All right, Joe. Soon as they cleared that place up,
- 14:50you notify the lad lieutenant. I'm trying to get to you. I
- 14:54think I have something that better be looked into excuously. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 15:01Well in about fifteen minutes. Right, I'm sorry, Dolla. What
- 15:05was't you was saying? Why all the hustles? Something big? A homicide
- 15:09happened yesterday summertime? Yeah? Who got it? A guy named Belden?
- 15:11Somebody shot him three times with a thirty eight Johnny Dollar. This is mister
- 15:33Oldfield calling sir. You left word at my office, mister Dollar. That's
- 15:37right, mister Oldfield. I think I'm gonna need an attorney divor civil suit.
- 15:41What mister Dollar withholding evidence murder? Let's take the murder first. Who
- 15:46did it? I don't know, but I'm pretty sure I have the murder
- 15:48weapon in my possession right now. Who was kidding? A man named Beldon?
- 15:52I think, what do you want me to do? So? Take
- 15:54my statement, notarize it, give me some legal advice. Police station and
- 15:58the paybooths down the hall of the homicide. I'll meet you there in five
- 16:00minutes. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location Vicksburg, Virginia
- 16:10to Special Investigator Johnny Dollar for personal reasons, Attention Chief account in Eastern Seaboard
- 16:17Casualty Insurance Corporation, Providence, Rhode Island. Did Jim, I'm attaching my
- 16:21own expense sheet to your bill for clarification purposes. Expense account item ten ten
- 16:29cents one cup of coffee at the counter and the lobby of the Vicksburg Police
- 16:32Station. While I waited for Samuel W. Oldfield, Attorney at law,
- 16:34to appear, he was there in exactly five minutes. That's right, Samlfield,
- 16:42You're the only one here in the lobby, so I figured you were
- 16:45the right man. Yeah, cup of coffee, mister Oldfield, who saying
- 16:48excuse me a hot burn? Now that was a pretty interesting phone call.
- 16:55Tell me who are you, sir, Johnny Dollar. I'm a private insurance
- 16:57investigator. How'd you get my name? I looked it up in the yellow
- 17:00pages of the telephone directory. You don't live here in Vigsboo, No,
- 17:04I'm from Hertford, Connecticut. All right, sir, Now tell me about
- 17:08the murder and the withholding of information. Maybe I better start from the top.
- 17:14Go right ahead anyway, life. Well, two days ago I flew
- 17:17down here to investigate a small burglary at the Plantation Hotel. It was already
- 17:21solved by the time my plane got in. Police. Yeah, I had
- 17:23nothing better to do, so I waited around the hotel bar for my return
- 17:27reservation back to Hartford, and then I happen to walk outside of the parking
- 17:30lot for a breath of fresh air. I saw a woman and a man
- 17:33standing there arguing. When I got close to them, the woman asked me
- 17:37to help her. I did, how do you mean? Well, the
- 17:40man she was with started to act like a kid. He got rough,
- 17:42so I shoved him away. Go on. Well, the woman was upset,
- 17:48so I took her inside the hotel and bought her a drink. After
- 17:49that, I put her in a cab and started to send her on her
- 17:52way. She started to w act sick about that. Wait, is this
- 17:56the woman whose picture was in the paper tonight, the one who died and
- 18:00the police don't know who she is? Yeah? I don't know who she
- 18:03is, mister Oldfield accepted her name's Amy Duran. I found out her name
- 18:10because I found her person. There was a gun in it, a thirty
- 18:12eight Colt registered to a man named O'Connell. I checked on the gun here
- 18:17at headquarters, went out to the address and found out O'Connell was a bank
- 18:19guard and it died about a year ago. I talked to his wife,
- 18:22Teresa O'Connell. While I was there. The man i'd seen the night before
- 18:26showed up. His name's Paul Damren. I didn't tell him or missus O'Connell
- 18:30about the gun. I came down here to give it to the police and
- 18:33tell them. But when I got here, Lieutenant Aikins was pretty busy trying
- 18:37to solve the murder of a man named Belden who had been shot with a
- 18:40thirty eight three times. There are three slugs missing from the gun. I
- 18:45found. You gotta lights it? Yeah, here you go. When you
- 18:55were found, Amy Durant's persh, why didn't you turn it over to the
- 19:00police? Oh? I thought, I Well, somehow I thought maybe I
- 19:04could help the girl. I mean, her last words before she died were
- 19:08helped me, and for some reason or other, I thought maybe I could.
- 19:14Do you have any cards or letters, anything like that, something that
- 19:17says you're what you say you are. Yeah, sure, let's see.
- 19:23Okay, dull, Now, as I see it, you probably hooked up
- 19:30with someone who did some shooting, and that's what worries. I want you
- 19:33to take my statement and notarize it before I turn the gun in. That'll
- 19:37protect you some. If they want to get nasty, they can though,
- 19:40you know that, yeah, I know, well, as I see it.
- 19:44The main job here is to try to keep you out of trouble,
- 19:47and the statement explaining your motive for participation in the whole affair might help.
- 19:51That's why I caught you, all right, did not well, yeah,
- 19:56you didn't shoot anybody to do No, okay, let's go over to my
- 20:02house. We did, and I made a necessary statement and mister Oldfield notarized
- 20:11it. After that, I went back to the Vicksburg Police station to talk
- 20:15to Lieutenant Aikins. The thirty eight i'd found in Navy Durant's first was still
- 20:18in my pocket and her words were still in my mind. Help me,
- 20:23please help me. Thought you were going back to heart for dolla. Oh.
- 20:36I decided to hang around and see what came up. Nothing so far,
- 20:40and the girl no one's recognized. The picture in the paper. Had
- 20:42to turn that over the missing persons. This murder case going to eat up
- 20:47all my time. What happened? Lieutenant oh Made at the department house where
- 20:52this man bellt And was staying, found him late this afternoon. He'd been
- 20:56dead about twenty four hours, shot with a thirty eight. I'm sure we
- 21:00did a post mortem right away. It's pretty set case. You uh,
- 21:07you know who shut him? Have a pretty good idea. See this Belden,
- 21:11He was an order to work on some books at the firm of textile
- 21:15wholesalers here, Richmond Limited. The paper scattered around in his apartment show he'd
- 21:19found a ten thousand dollars shortage going over their books. And the chief accountant
- 21:23for this Richmond company is missing. Yeah, well that does make it seem
- 21:29pretty clean that all we have to do is find that accountant. Had an
- 21:32app out for half an hour, and now I think we'll pick her up
- 21:34pretty soon. Her who, well, her dollar the chief accountant for Richmond
- 21:41Limited. She's a woman name of Amy dran To all appearances, Amy Durant
- 21:49had been guilty of embezzling money and murdering The order to Belden, who discovered
- 21:52the shortages in her books. I didn't tell Against that his suspect was the
- 21:56girl lying in the morgue at the moment unidentified. I knew that it was
- 22:00only a matter of minutes before her sister or Paul Damaran would be down to
- 22:04identify her. And for the third time, I didn't tell Lieutenant Agans about
- 22:08the gun. I know if I turned that over to him, it would
- 22:11be a close case all around, and somehow I didn't want it closed on
- 22:15Amy Duran, not that way. For that reason, I went back to
- 22:19my hotel room for a couple of hours, and then about nine o'clock that
- 22:22night, I found myself over on Polk Street at Teresa O'Connell's house once more.
- 22:38Oh hello, missus O'Connell. Oh, mister Dalla, Yes, oh
- 22:45mister Dolla. I had the most awful news tonight, My sister Amy,
- 22:52she's dead. You'll have to excuse me. May I come in. I'd
- 22:59like to talk to you about your sister, Missus O'Connell. Well, Paul
- 23:07came in with tonight's paper, showed me Amy's picture. He went down in
- 23:11the moug to identify I couldn't bear too sure. I feel somehow, in
- 23:18some way that you're a friend, mister dollar. Missus O'Connell, I am
- 23:21a friend in a way, but mostly I'm an insurance investigator. You thought
- 23:25I was a friend of your dead husband when I came here earlier. I'm
- 23:27not. I never even knew him. But mister Dolla, I don't understand.
- 23:30I met your sister Amy last night. I was the last one to
- 23:33speak to her before she died. I took her to the emergency hospital last
- 23:37night. Oh wait, wait, this is all very confusing, you say,
- 23:40your insurance investigator. Yes, now, when well, I got your
- 23:45address from a gun I found in your sister's purse. I traced it through
- 23:48the license to carry this kind of Missus O'Connell, your husband was licensed to
- 23:52carry when he worked for a banking firm. Do you recognize him? Oh
- 23:56yes, I suppose I do. Think it's one of Ray's guns. Please
- 24:02please let me find something out first. Believe me, I do want to
- 24:03help. Did you know your sister had this gun? Oh? No?
- 24:07What what would Amy want with a gun? I mean, but she could
- 24:12have picked it up here anytime she came over, and probably did. But
- 24:17why would Amy have a gun? In her purse, missus O'Connell, you
- 24:22better listen to me carefully. Sometime late yesterday afternoon or early evening, a
- 24:27man named Belden was shot and killed Claience Building. Yes, he worked with
- 24:34an audit infirm. Amy spoke of him. Wait no, wait, listen
- 24:41to the rest of this. Belden had been working on books for Richmond Limited.
- 24:45As I understand that your sister Amy was responsible for those books. Right
- 24:49now, the police have enough evidence to figure that your sister stole ten thousand
- 24:52dollars from Richmond Limited, Amy noconnell. They have that evidence in bulk form.
- 25:00I certainly have reason to assume, and they are assuming that your sister
- 25:02shot Belden to keep him quiet about the shortage. Can you say those things
- 25:06about Amy when she's not here to defend the sales, please, I'm just
- 25:08telling you what's going on downtown. What they've found. This gun they don't
- 25:12have yet, I've withheld it. It has been fired three times recently.
- 25:17Belden was shot three times. By now, your sister's body has no doubt
- 25:19been identified. They've already established that she died of poisoning, and they halfway
- 25:25have the idea that she committed suicide. No, don't you see, They'll
- 25:27say she shot Belden to cover up and keep it quiet, and then saw
- 25:30how useless it was, took poison and killed yourself to escape punishment. You're
- 25:34horrible, horrible, Go away, Go away from me. I'm sorry,
- 25:38but in the face of all this, I want to help her if I
- 25:41can, if it isn't too late, I want to help you. But
- 25:44missus O'Connell, you'll have to help me. Now. Why why would your
- 25:48sister steal? Why? I don't know. I think you do know.
- 25:52Tell me, please, for her sake, Missus O'Connell. Why what have
- 25:57you got to do with her? I met her only for a few minutes,
- 26:00but in that few minutes I got the idea that she was a pretty
- 26:03nice person. She didn't strike me as a thief, she didn't look like
- 26:06a killer, and most of all, she didn't look like a woman who
- 26:08take the suicide way out of things. Now, that's all I have,
- 26:12except that she asked me to help her, and I'm trying to do that
- 26:15now. Believe me, I want to help her if I can. I've
- 26:22always been an awful child, mister Dollar. When Ray died I tried to
- 26:27kill myself. Amy saved me. I remember then at the hospital. She
- 26:33was beside my bed and she said to me, I'll make you want to
- 26:37live again. I'll make you. Amy was always like that, kind and
- 26:42decent. You weren't wrong about her. She was decent, thoughtful, good.
- 26:51She did everything for me. She gave me these clothes and a car,
- 26:56introduced me to nice people from my office, like Paul Paul Damren.
- 27:00Yes, that must be where all the money went to, not on her
- 27:03self, but on me. For me. I'm the only reason I can
- 27:07think of that she'd take money from the firm. Yeah, yeah, I
- 27:14didn't know she was stealing from me. I didn't know. I wouldn't have
- 27:17let her do it. She didn't have to pamper me that much. I'm
- 27:19not that much of a child. She didn't have to do it. She
- 27:22didn't have to do it. Wait, wait a minute. She didn't kill
- 27:26herself, she didn't steal, she didn't murder that man. I did all
- 27:30those things because it was all for me. Now here's our star to tell
- 27:49you about the final intriguing episode of this week's story. Tomorrow, all the
- 27:53evidence comes true. A helpless dead girl gets her help join us, Won't
- 27:59you Yours Truly Johnny Dollar? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey,
- 28:22is transcribed in Hollywood, written by John Dawson. It is produced and directed
- 28:26by Jack Johnstone. Be sure to join us tomorrow night at same time and
- 28:32station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking
- 29:40welcome back. Well, either Johnny has a really big clue or he really
- 29:48doesn't like to see this woman keeping full skill on herself, perhaps a combination
- 29:56of both. Though it's kind of an odd exit, but we're certainly set
- 30:00for an interesting wind up in this case. It's definitely interesting to see Johnny
- 30:07writing a report to himself, and at first glance, this may seem a
- 30:11little bit odd behavior, but really it's not. The report is just a
- 30:22way that he is comfortable writing and chronicling events, and so writing a report
- 30:30to himself to kind of to kind of be clear on what he is thinking
- 30:37and what happened to him. I think that's perfectly reasonable, and even though
- 30:42he is status as insurance investigator has no relevance to the case, I think
- 30:49that it definitely does add some weight to what he says, so all right,
- 30:56Well, now we turn to listener comments and feedback ingrid rites. I
- 31:03Heeart Johnny Dollar, Rebecca I adds he is my favorite. And but Margie
- 31:11emailed me and says, I'm part of a group that does lot of performances
- 31:15of old time radio shows, and we recorded our performances for downloading from our
- 31:18website. Our shows are free as part of a community outreach. So if
- 31:22never worried too much about copety write issues, especially with the thirties and forties
- 31:26shows, but we were interested in doing Stan Freeburg's Christmas Dragon at Christmas parody
- 31:32for a December show, and I wondered how you handle getting rights to put
- 31:36it on your website or if it is in the public domain. Please share
- 31:41your thoughts on this. Well, thanks so much for the question, Margie.
- 31:45The Freeburg show wouldn't be considered radio old time radio and definitely wouldn't be
- 31:52the public domain. My best recommendation, given the kind of uncertain state,
- 32:01would be to go ahead and contact mister Freeburg, and I sent along the
- 32:09address for mister Freeburg's agency, the agency that represents him over in Studio City,
- 32:17because I know that particular parody is still you know, mister Freeburg still
- 32:23has CDs that are in print. In that particular parody which originally appeared on
- 32:29the LP not on radio, is still being sold commercially, so I would
- 32:37definitely recommend getting in touch with him on that. And thanks so much for
- 32:43keeping radio alive and re enacting it. I think it helps to give folks
- 32:47that experience and feel of listening and watching radio, and I haven't had that
- 32:52myself. I've been meaning to get over to Kirkland to see a recording of
- 32:58the Harry Nile Show and just have not been able to get around to it
- 33:01myself, but one of these days hopefully. All right, well, that
- 33:06will do it for today. We will be back tomorrow with Nick Carter,
- 33:10and then we wrap up both the Plant Agent Matter and Crime for King on
- 33:20Friday, so be sure and be back with us then. In the meantime,
