- 0:11Welcome to It's My Money.
- 0:12It's My Money is brought to you by Brenthurst Wealth, South Africa's
- 0:15multi-award winning boutique wealth manager.
- 0:18With me this week from Brenthurst Wealth in Pretoria is Cherise Biokas.
- 0:22Now, Cherise, you sent me an interesting article because this is a subject that...
- 0:26we've done so many times, or I've done so many times with both you and your
- 0:30colleagues, and it's all about investing
- 0:33in South Africa.
- 0:34And you've got a very interesting take on it.
- 0:36You just say, why not just invest in South Africa?
- 0:39And some of your headlines are really good because you say things like, your
- 0:42portfolio should not mirror your passport, a big fish
- 0:46in a small pond, etc.
- 0:48But people of a certain generation as well, I'm talking about here, Cherise.
- 0:54are familiar with South Africa.
- 0:55It's what they know.
- 0:56So they think, well, I'm going to stick to what I know.
- 0:59Is that something you come up against often?
- 1:02Hi, Lindsay.
- 1:02Yes, it's good to be here.
- 1:04So it is a question I get often, especially from, I wouldn't say it's
- 1:10limited to the
- 1:11younger generation, older generation as well.
- 1:14But what they tend to ask me is why should they invest offshore when All of their
- 1:21expenses, etc.
- 1:22is in South Africa and they understand South Africa.
- 1:25They live here, they know South Africa.
- 1:27I mean, the JSE hasn't done very badly.
- 1:30So why should they invest offshore?
- 1:33And then we would very often have to make a case for investing offshore.
- 1:38So yeah, it's definitely something we deal with quite often.
- 1:41But also some people might turn around and say, yes, I understand it.
- 1:44And also it's done well recently because I think I was speaking to an asset manager a
- 1:49couple of days ago.
- 1:50And he said to me that over one, three and five years, South African equities have
- 1:54outperformed global equities.
- 1:56So there is a case to be made statistically as well, Cherise.
- 2:01That's correct.
- 2:02So we have seen the JSE outperform over the past one, three and five years.
- 2:09But that's not the total picture that we're looking at.
- 2:12So if I were to take the JSE over the past decade.
- 2:18It did close to 12% or delivered close to 12% per annum in RAND terms.
- 2:23But if you were to take that RAND terms and divert it and take it to dollar,
- 2:28performance in dollar
- 2:29terms, that was about 2% in dollar terms.
- 2:33So, yes, in RAND terms, it didn't, you know, disappoint at all.
- 2:39But I think there's a bigger picture that we need to take into account here is that.
- 2:44We're not saying you should take all your money out of South Africa.
- 2:47I mean, local investments still have and always will have an important role because
- 2:52we live here.
- 2:53Most of our expenses are in rands.
- 2:54But the question should simply be whether all of your investments should be
- 3:01local and in rand and exposed to local factors.
- 3:05That headline I mentioned in my introduction, a big fish in a small pond,
- 3:08do you embellish that headline by saying?
- 3:11that the All Share Index holds 119 shares.
- 3:14So you're talking about size and also diversity and also choice because the
- 3:19MSCI, for example, has nearly
- 3:212,500 stocks.
- 3:23So it's a no-brainer, really.
- 3:25Yes, yes, definitely.
- 3:27So if you're thinking about diversifying, I mean, getting a diversified portfolio
- 3:33within
- 3:34only the JSE or local portfolio would be quite the task.
- 3:39The JSE or South Africa makes up below 1% of all global listed equities.
- 3:46So we're all fishing in the same shallow pond.
- 3:49And effectively, we're not really getting much diversification.
- 3:54So there's definitely, you know, room for improvement.
- 3:58The 10 largest shares on the JSE makes up about 60% of the shares.
- 4:03So if you only invest in the 10 largest shares, you've...
- 4:09invested in 60% of the JSE.
- 4:11And also the market is shrinking a bit because we don't get the listings that we
- 4:14used to.
- 4:15I don't know if you are old enough to remember the late 1990s when there was a
- 4:21boom of
- 4:22both small tech companies and small financial services companies coming to the
- 4:27JSE.
- 4:28It's not the case anymore.
- 4:29Listings are few and far between and delistings are more regular than listings.
- 4:34So there's fewer choice, but also there's a concentration risk.
- 4:37Now, I know concentration risk exists overseas as well with the AI stocks in
- 4:41particular dominating 2025.
- 4:44But in the JSC, on the JSC rather, it's more pronounced.
- 4:48I think around about a dozen or 10 of the really big stocks make up 50% of the major
- 4:54index.
- 4:57Yeah, that's true.
- 4:57As I said, so in the 1990s, that was obviously before I practiced,
- 5:05I was still in diapers.
- 5:06But you were looking at about around about 750 listed companies in South
- 5:13Africa, and that has declined to, or it's declined by almost 70% where it is today.
- 5:21Obviously, as we mentioned, the small pond or the shallow pond is very much a
- 5:26concentration risk for
- 5:28local shares.
- 5:29If you just look at the JSE, those top 10 shares, I mean, we can all name them by
- 5:34name.
- 5:35It's the NASPERS, Proces, the banks, your Anglo shares.
- 5:40Those are your most or your biggest shares in the JSE.
- 5:44So everyone has access to all of those same shares, be it in your RA.
- 5:49or your pension fund, or any local investment that you do have, you will have
- 5:54exposure to those because
- 5:56it's the same bond.
- 5:58What about the RAND?
- 5:59People try to trade the RAND.
- 6:01People say, well, the RAND is going to be stronger in the next couple of years and
- 6:06it's been behaving rather nicely over the
- 6:08period of 2025, 2026.
- 6:11So I'm going to keep my assets local and take advantage of that.
- 6:17me That is a warning sign.
- 6:20Yes, that's one we get very often.
- 6:23So now we've seen the client, the client has agreed to invest offshore or they see
- 6:28the value in investing offshore.
- 6:30And now they need to take their money offshore and invest physically in dollars.
- 6:34But now they want to wait for the RAND.
- 6:37And they kind of try and see what would be the best entry point from a Forex point of
- 6:43view.
- 6:44But that's something that's counterintuitive because at the end of the
- 6:46day, You can never predict where the RAND is going to go.
- 6:49It might go up.
- 6:50It might come down.
- 6:52No one knows.
- 6:54So the best strategy you can have is to just get invested.
- 6:59And we can even do a phase-in or phasing-in instruction for you, where we
- 7:04phase in your money
- 7:05over a period of time.
- 7:07And by that way, you get exposure to a weighted average in RAND.
- 7:13So, I mean, if you just look historically, A dollar cost us around
- 7:196.70 in 2010, 2011, whereas today it's 16.61.
- 7:25I just checked it before you phoned me.
- 7:28So that is roughly a 6% decline per year of the rand
- 7:35against the dollar.
- 7:36It's a powerful argument.
- 7:38Yes, it's a really powerful argument.
- 7:39I didn't realize it was that recent that it was below 7 to the US dollar.
- 7:44That's quite extraordinary.
- 7:46So, yeah, I mean, don't become a currency trader, I think, is the message that I'd
- 7:49like to put across here.
- 7:52You list a few questions here.
- 7:54We've mentioned the RAND, questions that you're asked.
- 7:57You've mentioned the RAND.
- 7:58And here's a comment from somebody that might be like this.
- 8:02It says the JSC looks cheaper than global markets.
- 8:05Yes, sometimes it does look cheaper.
- 8:07There are some really beaten up stocks on the JSC at the moment.
- 8:10What would your response to that be, Cherise?
- 8:13Yes.
- 8:14So obviously the JSE, if a client sits across from me and they say to you that
- 8:19the JSE is looking a bit
- 8:21cheaper than global markets, I would say that valuation obviously makes or it
- 8:27matters.
- 8:28Cheap markets can stay cheap for years.
- 8:30So you hold local value opportunities alongside global quality and growth
- 8:37opportunities rather than forcing all of your money into one basket.
- 8:43Almost like it's an all or nothing choice.
- 8:45It doesn't have to be either South Africa or either offshore.
- 8:49Why can't it be both?
- 8:50Why can't we diversify and have both?
- 8:53We've spoken about global concentration and JSC concentration.
- 8:57The one that is interesting to me right at the end is someone says, but my expenses
- 9:01are in rands.
- 9:02How do you counter that one?
- 9:04That's also, yeah, that's quite an interesting one.
- 9:07So, yes, your expenses are in rands.
- 9:09before you even...
- 9:11open an investment portfolio, you are already exposed heavily to the local
- 9:18market.
- 9:18I mean, just look at where you own your house, look at where you earn your salary,
- 9:21look at where you are investing your pension fund in.
- 9:25So already before even opening an investment portfolio, you are exposed to
- 9:30local assets.
- 9:31And it's not a bad thing.
- 9:33That's exactly why you have to keep those meaningful local assets.
- 9:37But why would you want to tie your long-term growth to one economy and one
- 9:43currency
- 9:45and not diversified.
- 9:46If you just look at travel expenses, any imports like technological imports, the
- 9:51cell phones, the laptops
- 9:53we use, all of them are priced in dollars.
- 9:56And that's why you need to keep up with that inflation.
- 10:00The final point that you make is about the offshore allowance.
- 10:04Now, we've still got exchange controls, we know that, but they've been relaxed in a
- 10:09remarkable way over the last
- 10:11decade or so.
- 10:12And we've had one this year as well, because in the 2026 budget, the single
- 10:16discretionary allowance went from one million to
- 10:19two million.
- 10:19It's quite a surprise, actually, a pleasant surprise.
- 10:21So there's no real excuse not to diversify overseas.
- 10:26Yes, I think that was a very welcome change in the budget this year, because if
- 10:33you look at one million rand five years ago or 10 years ago, it was worth much
- 10:39more than it
- 10:40is today.
- 10:41So we really welcomed it with open arms.
- 10:44All of our clients investing offshore have most of them have already used the
- 10:49allowance that is now two
- 10:51million rand per adult.
- 10:53And I think...
- 10:55That's what matters is the structure that you invest in.
- 10:58So obviously you can have offshore exposure by feeder funds or RAND,
- 11:03Denominated Global Fund,
- 11:05but it's not the same as physically owning externalized dollars and
- 11:11investing in physical dollars because your money will always have to come back to
- 11:16RAND if you just own it in a feeder
- 11:18fund, so to speak.
- 11:19So I think that's it.
- 11:21It was welcome.
- 11:23Much overdue and it's already been, we've used it for a few clients this year
- 11:29already.
- 11:30It's beyond the scope of this podcast, Cherise, but I think what the message is
- 11:33here, yes, consider diversifying
- 11:36geographically, go overseas.
- 11:38It's proved to be very profitable over the years, but also the way that you do it is
- 11:43very important.
- 11:44Getting the right structure.
- 11:45It's no point going overseas and trading yourself and making money if you don't
- 11:50have the right
- 11:51information about it.
- 11:52tax overseas and all sorts of other matters.
- 11:55But as I say, we can't speak about that now.
- 11:58What's your final message, please?
- 12:01So I think you're absolutely right in saying that, Lindsay.
- 12:04I mean, this is not something that a lot of people would want to do on their own
- 12:09because there are tax
- 12:11implications, there are exchange control implications, there are estate duty
- 12:16implications.
- 12:17So I think it would be best to maybe just see your financial planner.
- 12:21ask the question and see if it's something that will fit in your portfolio.
- 12:26Because nine times out of 10, I can guarantee you that there will be room in
- 12:32your portfolio for offshore
- 12:33exposure.
- 12:34And it would be advisable to take it on.
- 12:36So I think it's just very important to speak to your local advisor and see where
- 12:41you can fit it in and in what
- 12:42structures it can be invested in.
- 12:45Very good advice.
- 12:46Thank you very much for your time, Cherise.
