- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:06Our goal is to not only share our sermons, but to go beyond
- 0:09the sermon in conversations about what we're learning and
- 0:11what God is doing in our lives and our community.
- 0:15You can find out more information about our church at
- 0:17fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for joining us for this
- 0:21conversation. So I figured since our series is
- 0:29on money that I can live go through the balances on my
- 0:37church credit card one by. 1 by 1.
- 0:42Because I have to give it to William, and I need to give it
- 0:44to William today. So #1 local.
- 0:52Sheesh. Well, that's all cut.
- 0:53Now we can start back to our favorite game or only game and
- 1:00let the church say and this card I think lines up with with the
- 1:05sermons this week. So.
- 1:07Uh oh. It's OK for married couples to
- 1:10have secret bank accounts. No, I rebuke that.
- 1:16I also rebuke that. I thought you're going to say
- 1:19separate bank accounts, and while I don't think it's ideal,
- 1:23I I can understand that one. But then a secret came out.
- 1:26No, no, no, no, no. Yeah.
- 1:29Nope, I. Don't even know how that would
- 1:32be room for conversation on that one.
- 1:35Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's weird, very
- 1:39weird to me. Make your argument for the ideal
- 1:42separate bank accounts, or it's ideal not to have separate bank
- 1:46accounts. Yeah.
- 1:49I mean, I think when we talk about marriage, we're talking
- 1:53biblically, right, about two becoming 1.
- 1:56And I think that needs should is best if that includes every
- 2:02aspect of life and finances like them, hate them, whatever there.
- 2:08It's a major part of life. I feel like in those areas, the
- 2:14two should become one as well. Yeah.
- 2:17And finances are tricky because it's what second largest calls
- 2:21for divorce, I think, yeah, probably.
- 2:24I think kids is first or things regarding kids.
- 2:27Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:28I mean, even in our our wedding that we had in Mexico, part of
- 2:33the ceremony is the ceremonial coins where it's like like the
- 2:39his and hers and then it becomes one and then we put all the
- 2:42coins together. In little case.
- 2:44It's at my office if you're ever curious of looking at Mexican
- 2:48marital coins. OK, interesting.
- 2:51They're in my office. They're not worth anything.
- 2:53So don't try and steal from the church.
- 2:55If they were, I would say please try and steal from the church.
- 2:57Sure. You towed an interesting line
- 3:01that I don't think I've seen from the pulpit before, or at
- 3:05least not the way you attacked it.
- 3:07I would say when we're looking. At calling me a heretic.
- 3:11No, no, no, I'm implying you're a heretic.
- 3:16No, it's the, I don't know, it was really, really well done,
- 3:22but I want to make sure that people don't lean into the part
- 3:27that they liked because it's, you hear no tithing.
- 3:34We don't have to like hyper focus on 10% anymore.
- 3:37Yippee. And then it's genital.
- 3:41I'm feeling really generous with my 1%.
- 3:43And that's what Pastor Scott said.
- 3:45Like, yeah. Well, did you notice when I said
- 3:49that? You know, I'm not against
- 3:51tithing, I just don't think it goes far enough.
- 3:53There was like an audible suck in of air in the room.
- 3:58So people were like, oh, where's he going to go with that?
- 4:01And I think people thought I was going to set like some higher
- 4:04benchmark that they were supposed to read, which clearly,
- 4:09if you've listened to the sermon, was not my goal.
- 4:12Yes and yeah. I think it's one of those things
- 4:15that I've seen it go, yeah, where where people then switch
- 4:20to the generous, which is supposed to lead us into more
- 4:23intimate relationship with God and what he wants us to give and
- 4:28not feel limited within our giving.
- 4:32But then I think some people it's like, well, whatever I feel
- 4:35I can spare. If I give $1.00 more than what I
- 4:38feel like I can spare, then to me that's generous.
- 4:42And it's not really a generous heart.
- 4:44It's a how much can I keep for myself?
- 4:47Right, right. That's that's kind of the bare
- 4:49minimum mentality. Yeah, but if you give the extra
- 4:52dollar, then it's generous because it's more.
- 4:55I'm just saying I. I hear you.
- 4:57Been around people that have that have attempted to use that.
- 5:04But on the other side of that, you know, I've heard of churches
- 5:08who when you want to become a member, they're like, all right,
- 5:12bring in your pay stub and we're going to calculate together what
- 5:1710% is. And that's what we're going to
- 5:19expect from you at a minimum. Yep.
- 5:22And that is not, not, not not, I think, in line with Jesus and
- 5:30Paul's teaching. Yeah, in the.
- 5:33Giving with a generous heart and not under compulsion.
- 5:36I think it's the the Korean Methodist Church like in Korea,
- 5:40not like the Korean American where when they do tithes and
- 5:43offerings they like take up the amount and it's announced how
- 5:47much each person has given. Oh wow.
- 5:50On the spot in front of everybody and there's a viral
- 5:54video of a pastor that was doing like what I hate when it like
- 5:58get business terms. Was it like a campaign for
- 6:01trying to reach a certain goal? Yeah, like a capital campaign.
- 6:04Capital campaign and at one point he was like ushers close
- 6:08the doors. We're not leaving until we reach
- 6:11this certain amount of money. And so we've definitely seen
- 6:15within our culture and abuse in regards to finances when it
- 6:20comes to the church. And so people are like, OK, you
- 6:23want us to give generously or some give us 10% and say it's to
- 6:28God, but we feel like from our perspective, we're giving it to
- 6:32man. And you even acknowledge that
- 6:36like people think the more in the plates, the more in your
- 6:38pockets. Yeah, and that's not true.
- 6:40No, you and I split that money, right?
- 6:43No, it's not true, but it's already set.
- 6:45It doesn't change how much. No, my my 2009 Highlander is
- 6:49proof. Of that and so I want to I want
- 6:56you to touch on what and where could be counted towards giving
- 7:02back to God because I think normally it's like restricted
- 7:07and viewed as like it has to be. Given to your local church.
- 7:11Yes, yeah. And so is that all?
- 7:15Is that the like that's the tithings and then everything
- 7:21else is just charitable and it's still what we're called as
- 7:23Christians. Like if people gave, you know,
- 7:27half of their what maybe they, if they're used to the tithing
- 7:32concept, say they've been doing tithing all these years and they
- 7:35give half of it to Christian nonprofits or even other
- 7:38nonprofits, and then half to the church because, yeah.
- 7:42Could you touch on that? Yeah, I think for me, where I
- 7:47come down on it, and again, this isn't, you know, there's no
- 7:50chapter in verse. This is what you should give to
- 7:53your local church, that kind of thing.
- 7:57And I don't have any problem with the people supporting
- 8:00Christian nonprofits, missionaries, other ministries,
- 8:04things like that. We do it, you know, part of our
- 8:07giving goes to support specific things outside of the local
- 8:12church. That said, I do think we have a
- 8:19responsibility as as a part of a local church to give the
- 8:26majority of what we're giving to our local church.
- 8:30I think we should support the ministries church involved in,
- 8:35you know, the, the staff that the church has hired, you know,
- 8:38all that kind of stuff. And if we don't feel like with a
- 8:42clear heart, we can do that. There are deeper conversations
- 8:47that need to happen, you know, and, and that's why I mentioned
- 8:51at least once in the sermon of Sunday, like we're, we talked
- 8:55about giving and we talked about money, because it's an issue of
- 8:58discipleship, right? And and if there are things
- 9:04going on within your church or things they're not doing or
- 9:07whatever that you feel like you can't give to your local church,
- 9:13although that's a conversation that needs to happen because
- 9:17there's clearly some disconnect between what you feel called to
- 9:21and what you see happening in the church or vice versa.
- 9:25And so I think those things should be talked about honestly,
- 9:30confidentially. You know, I don't think it's a
- 9:33stand somebody up in front of the congregation and ask them
- 9:36why they aren't giving a larger percentage of their giving to
- 9:40the church. But, you know, there, there are
- 9:43people who have come to me and said with everything that's been
- 9:47going on with the United Methodist Church, with the
- 9:50changes that have been made at the General Conference level,
- 9:55with the things we see happening within our own annual
- 9:57conference, we can't in good faith give to the United Method,
- 10:06give to our church as a United Methodist Church.
- 10:10And I get that. I get it.
- 10:13You know, I think there are some people I've been able to have
- 10:16some conversation with and help them see, you know, what they
- 10:20give to the local church, where that actually goes and how much
- 10:24of that actually goes to the annual conference, which is not
- 10:29much at this point from our local church.
- 10:33And so, but I think those are our conversations we need to
- 10:36have so that we can all grow together.
- 10:38But I certainly don't hold it against anybody who says, you
- 10:43know, I really have a passion for, you know, this foreign
- 10:48nation or people group somewhere around the world.
- 10:52And so part of my giving, I feel like God has told me needs to be
- 10:56supporting Christian workers in those areas.
- 11:01Absolutely. You know, and maybe that can
- 11:03happen through our local church. Maybe maybe at this point it
- 11:06can't, you know, And so I think that would be my basic answer.
- 11:12But those are those are things people have to wrestle through
- 11:16as a family and figure out. If anyone in our congregation
- 11:22was going to be struck dead by God for their sin, who do you
- 11:27think's most? Likely top three, me and then
- 11:31you. That's true.
- 11:33Teachers are judged worse. Yep, and I'm not going any
- 11:37further than that. You ever hear a sermon on
- 11:42Ananias and Sphera before? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:47Yeah, OK, I've heard. But it wasn't, yeah, like I
- 11:50said, I think you handled it very well because people do
- 11:54focus more on the giving or the amount of giving versus the
- 12:01lying and deceiving and their heart behind the trying to look
- 12:06more righteous by doing similarly to who was it that?
- 12:11Barnabas. Barnabas, but he had a different
- 12:13name. Joseph.
- 12:14There you go. Where has God convicted you in
- 12:18regards to your finances before and you've had to make
- 12:22adjustments? Well, two things kind of come to
- 12:26mind. I think the biggest way I've
- 12:30felt convicted about money in the past has been in going out
- 12:37to eat. And how many times, you know,
- 12:40you're out and about and it's just easier to stop and grab
- 12:44something and pick it up and, you know, eat on the road or
- 12:47stop for a few minutes or whatever.
- 12:50And then realizing, you know, how much more that costs than a
- 12:56meal at home, buying groceries, all that kind of stuff.
- 13:00And, and realizing that, you know, there's a place for going
- 13:05out to eat. It's not wrong to go out to eat,
- 13:08especially, you know, you want to do something special, you're
- 13:10celebrating your fellowshipping with people, whatever.
- 13:13But the times when you're just out and about, maybe there are
- 13:17some better ways you can. That's how I felt.
- 13:20I'm not saying it for other people.
- 13:21I'm not trying to put that conviction on other people, but
- 13:23for me, that's one place where God has spoken to me.
- 13:26But the other thing that kind of comes to my mind is I had to
- 13:29wrestle when I I entered into pastoral ministry.
- 13:35What does it look like for me to be giving to the local church
- 13:41that I'm leading? Because, you know, one sense
- 13:45it's like, well, why don't you just take a salary reduction?
- 13:50Then you payless taxes and blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:53I'm like, well, that's that kind of misses the point.
- 13:57You know, I think, I think giving is supposed to hurt a
- 14:01little bit. You know, we're supposed to feel
- 14:03it. It's not really generosity or or
- 14:08self sacrifice if it doesn't cost you anything.
- 14:12And it's kind of like David when he was bringing the temple and
- 14:18like the whole administrative center of the Kingdom into
- 14:21Jerusalem and he wanted to buy a certain threshing floor, you
- 14:30know, where they would thresh the grain, getting, you know,
- 14:34the wheat in the chaff and all that kind of stuff.
- 14:37Those were often on the top of a hill where the wind could
- 14:40actually catch the chaff and blow it.
- 14:43And so it's. Like the big fork things, right?
- 14:45Yeah, yeah. Where they're like shoveling it
- 14:47up and the chaff blows away and the colonel's fall.
- 14:50And so he he goes to the guy and he says, I want to buy your land
- 14:53so we can build the temple here. And he's like, Oh my gosh, like,
- 14:57let me just give it to you. You know, if it's for God and
- 15:05Dave's like, no, I'm not going to offer a sacrifice to the Lord
- 15:09that cost me nothing because it's not really a sacrifice,
- 15:14right? And so, but then the other, it's
- 15:19weird, right, as a, as a pastor who gets paid by the church to
- 15:22give back to the local church. And so that's where we felt like
- 15:28there were some other things we wanted to be financially
- 15:31invested in as well in our giving.
- 15:35And so that's where we, you know, choose to do our our extra
- 15:41giving because we still feel like it's important for us to
- 15:45give to the local church because we believe in the mission of the
- 15:48local church. We support the local church.
- 15:51And I don't know how I could ever stand up in front of people
- 15:55and preach A sermon like I did yesterday if we didn't give to
- 15:59our local church. Yeah, so.
- 16:02Yeah, I think the the dynamic as a pastor has definitely shifted
- 16:08things and made things weird. I'm still adjusting.
- 16:14Even just the concept of like using church money for things,
- 16:19for ministry took me a long time to do because I was like, I
- 16:26don't want the church to have to pay for this like right.
- 16:29And like it's my idea to spend this money for the youth or for
- 16:31the whatever, but like they should have to pay for my my
- 16:35ideas. Yeah.
- 16:37And sometimes there's a sense in which it's like, well, if I was
- 16:40just a member of the church, I would just pay for this.
- 16:44Yeah, Yeah, I would just buy it and donate it and yeah, you
- 16:47know, be done with it. But it's past our.
- 16:50We can't. There's only so far we can take
- 16:53that. Yeah, no, no, I think, I think
- 16:56Ron gave me the advice of would you be doing it if you didn't
- 17:00have this job? Would you be paying for it?
- 17:03And so that's been my kind of like my benchmarker of like,
- 17:08well, now I wouldn't, right. I wouldn't be paying for that.
- 17:11I wouldn't go here, I wouldn't go wherever if I didn't have
- 17:14this job. And so that's been been helpful
- 17:17and. For instance, there have been
- 17:19times I've gone out for a meal with people who needed, you
- 17:22know, an opportunity to talk to me and around the table is a
- 17:25better opportunity than coming into the office or whatever.
- 17:29And that's been ministry and, you know, submitted that receipt
- 17:33to my pastoral discretionary fund, blah, blah, blah.
- 17:37There have been other times where I've invited someone out
- 17:39to a meal just because I wanted to invest in them or whatever,
- 17:43like a young person or whatever and, and I just pay that because
- 17:49that was my choice and would probably be my choice whether I
- 17:54was in this role or not. Yeah, just to.
- 17:56Give some practicality to that. For some reason, it's always a
- 17:59steakhouse. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:04It's been an interesting shift. And yeah, I think during COVID I
- 18:10found myself, I don't know, there was just like a 2 month
- 18:14period where I was just up till 1:00 AM.
- 18:17The algorithm had me every ad is exactly what I wanted and and
- 18:22they were always on like 70% off.
- 18:24And so how do you not how do you not get all the I'm basic.
- 18:28I'm basically getting paid is how I viewed it.
- 18:32Yeah. I mean, I was getting convicted
- 18:35and luckily at the time, Rebecca was more of the sugar Mama.
- 18:39This is pre kids. And she was like, you got to you
- 18:45got to take a step back on the spending and I was like, OK,
- 18:48done. And then I just didn't buy
- 18:50anything for months. Like it.
- 18:53Yeah, because I just assume we have infinite money because
- 18:55you're a nurse. And then I think that might have
- 18:59also birthed the financial went challenge that I'm sure I've
- 19:03mentioned before, but. Yeah, but tell us about that
- 19:05we've. Been podcasting for almost 4
- 19:09years now, yeah, with almost 9000 lessons and so maybe people
- 19:16haven't heard that far back, which is ridiculous.
- 19:20Anyway, I just came to terms like a month ago that I'm
- 19:25technically a podcaster, which is.
- 19:28Yeah, I keep getting emails from people who are like, your
- 19:32podcast has has more episodes than most podcasts ever get.
- 19:36You know, we we'd love to partner with you and improve
- 19:39your metrics and monetization. I'm like, it's not really what
- 19:42I'm in it. For yeah, yeah, we're, we're the
- 19:44anti podcaster podcasters, which I think is great.
- 19:49I like that press anyway. So this financial challenge I
- 19:53did and and some of our young adults had done years ago was
- 19:57essentially that you stock up on.
- 20:01Toiletries, house cleaning, all that kind of stuff that you
- 20:04don't really buy super often. And then after that you don't
- 20:09spend money on anything besides gas, utilities and bills.
- 20:15So if you already have like a subscription service or
- 20:17whatever, you keep that. So like subscription bills, gas
- 20:22and groceries? Notice he didn't say food
- 20:25because it included not going out to.
- 20:27Eat Yes, I see it has to be at a grocery store and obviously
- 20:31medical, if you have any medical apps, whatever.
- 20:34And so, yeah, you do that. We did that for all of land.
- 20:37I think we did that two years in a row.
- 20:39And it's just a great reset of like the I don't actually need
- 20:42that. It's a want and not a need.
- 20:44And you can you can get crazy. We, you know, have a little more
- 20:47fun with the grocery budget, but then you even realize like, oh,
- 20:51we can have really nice food at home and still save tons of
- 20:55money. And so unless you have 4.
- 20:58Boys. I just say you do the too good
- 21:04to go Amato Bros the bread thing and he just.
- 21:07You're eating 4 loaves of bread today.
- 21:09This is. And so yeah, that was a big help
- 21:13and a big shift. And it's also something that if
- 21:15you feel like that could be a healthy reset, doesn't have to
- 21:19be done at Lent, doesn't have to be done.
- 21:21Oh, mate, that sounds good for next year.
- 21:23Like you could just do a month, pick a month.
- 21:26And yeah, it was, it was very, very helpful, saved a lot of
- 21:31money. But then it also just gives you
- 21:33healthier habits moving forward. And kind of similar like when we
- 21:36do been doing the fasting class this Lent of the just working on
- 21:42self-control and then it helps you self-control in other areas
- 21:45as well. So yeah, that's definitely one
- 21:49thing that I'd highly recommend for anyone that is either
- 21:54feeling tighter on money or feeling like I just I'm
- 21:58collecting more and more stuff and then it's not satisfying.
- 22:01So I get more stuff and then and yeah.
- 22:05Kind of another, another thing I've heard suggested that we
- 22:09don't, we don't have at this point, but I know some pastors
- 22:15do at some other churches encourage it.
- 22:18Is that within, you know, your small group or your band or
- 22:22whatever, you you set a certain baseline amount that if a
- 22:30purchase is going to be over that amount, you don't make that
- 22:35purchase without checking with that group?
- 22:37Yeah. And, and providing some level of
- 22:40accountability and having to justify if you really need it
- 22:44or, you know, if you're just kind of spending money for the
- 22:49sake of spending money or, you know, whatever.
- 22:51And that's, that's always intrigued me, you know, and, and
- 22:56each group kind of sets what that limit is because different
- 23:01parts of the country, different, different context, you know,
- 23:02that's kind of different, but intriguing to me to have that
- 23:06kind of accountability in an area that we often tend to
- 23:13highly individualize and personalize.
- 23:17Like the $74,000 Tyndale Bible from 15.
- 23:22I think like 54 that I saw on eBay.
- 23:25Yeah, and I told you, no, you can't buy that.
- 23:27I. Was like but is there a line
- 23:29item in the in the church budget for also?
- 23:32No. Artifacts of the faith or I
- 23:35don't know. Yeah, I think that's that's a
- 23:37great 1. And I think it also kind of
- 23:40connects to accountability before the Lord of like praying
- 23:45on those bigger purchases, even if you're shooting to have a
- 23:48group like that until you get an accountability group like that
- 23:52to pray over bigger purchases, even to the minutia.
- 23:56I've been learning about self exam and self examination, yeah.
- 24:00Is that self examine? Yeah, the self exam.
- 24:03Yeah. And my Sacred Rhythms book.
- 24:05And it's essentially you might know better.
- 24:09I only read it once and did it once, but for me, if I remember
- 24:12correctly, it's like looking back at your day or your week.
- 24:18It doesn't have to be daily, could be weekly.
- 24:20And like literally going through all of the instances, like
- 24:24essentially everything that happened and like were you, I
- 24:31forget the difference between the two, but one is like, where
- 24:34were you not like Christ? Where did you fall short and
- 24:36sin? Where could you have been more
- 24:38loving and like Christ and where were opportunities that God
- 24:43invited you and to do something and maybe you didn't do it?
- 24:47Where were times that you did follow through?
- 24:51And yeah, I think that could also touch in on the finances as
- 24:56well as you're going through and be like, you know, would Christ
- 25:00have purchased the, I don't know, double espresso as my
- 25:06father-in-law would call it a maca chocolate.
- 25:09And you know, you're walking out $12.00 less and all this stuff
- 25:16in your body that's probably not best for you.
- 25:18At a wrestling tournament recently and there's a little
- 25:21stand set up selling 7-8 dollar lattes.
- 25:25I'm like. At a wrestling match.
- 25:27Yeah. Was it officially Starbucks?
- 25:30No, I was like, oh, I don't know what it was, but, you know, and
- 25:35that was like the base price. And it just went up from there
- 25:37with added things and, yeah, captive audience, you know.
- 25:41Yeah. And yeah, water is really good
- 25:44for. It is and.
- 25:45Three, it is here and also provides a lot of natural
- 25:50energy. Yeah.
- 25:51And so that's, you know, one of those other shifts that of May,
- 25:56but that's more, yeah. Just touching on that more daily
- 25:58exam and we've mentioned the Electio 365.
- 26:03Yep. Is that what it is?
- 26:05Yeah, Electric 265 app, their evening prayer every day is a
- 26:11form of the exam and and so if you're interested in trying it,
- 26:14that might be a great place to just kind.
- 26:16Of yeah, I noticed that, yeah, because we've been doing the
- 26:20night time every night for a few months now.
- 26:23And after reading that, I was like, oh, did they slip?
- 26:26That in there, taking all kinds of that stuff, practices in
- 26:31here, that stuff. Just like Theo Davina, they're
- 26:34tricking us. Yeah, they're tricking us.
- 26:36But but it's it's good And and it's a great introduction to it.
- 26:40Yeah. I think if you're reading it,
- 26:43yes, it's great. If you're doing the audio
- 26:44version, it's not enough time to really go through.
- 26:47Yeah. Like it's like ponder back on
- 26:49the day of this. They can tell you if you need
- 26:51more time, you should pause it, yeah.
- 26:53I mean, yes, you can definitely do that for us.
- 26:56It's like the we're falling asleep and it's like the phone's
- 26:59down and we're not touching it again.
- 27:01But yeah, it's, there's a lot of really beautiful disciplines
- 27:05that I don't think get enough mention.
- 27:10Yeah, 'cause it's just pray, read Bible, pray, read Bible,
- 27:13pray, read Bible. But there's so many beautiful
- 27:15ways to pray and spend time with God and communicate with God.
- 27:20And to even read your Bible, right, like when you're talking
- 27:22about Electia, it's bringing the two together.
- 27:24And reflect on things with God and.
- 27:28Because I think that's the biggest thing, even when it if
- 27:31we were just to narrow it down to money and finances, like just
- 27:36get a little more intentional about it and ask God and you
- 27:41might be surprised at where he takes that.
- 27:45Well, that's our conversation for today.
- 27:47But that doesn't mean the conversation is over.
- 27:50We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
