- 0:03It's Monday, and you know what that means. Welcome to Have Faith. Let it begin.
- 0:10Podcast of inspiration.
- 0:13It's a podcast of hope. It's a podcast of faith, and it's a podcast of friendship.
- 0:20Here is your host, Angel Santana, and special co-host, Dr. E.
- 0:25We're a three-point last time. That's it, man. Let's rock and roll in 3, 2, 1.
- 0:33Hello, everyone, and welcome to Half-Aid, Let It Begin. It's the first time
- 0:36we're doing an actual introduction at the same time.
- 0:39I wanted to do it here, but just in case if it messes up, it's only on my platform and not Dr.
- 0:44E's, which, by the way, is a great segment because guess what?
- 0:48Dr. E is back. It's Half-Aid, Let It Begin. This is Angel.
- 0:51And, of course, the amazing Dr. E is—I just got done recording a great episode
- 0:56that you need to check out.
- 0:57It's on CrossFit. crockvip.com. You will love it.
- 1:01Subscribe to that. Citizens Reunited to Overcome Cancer.
- 1:04Today's episode hits like this.
- 1:07It's very close to home because I just spoke with Dr. Eid about it and it's
- 1:11a personal one. So we're going to go a little personal. It's about feeling overwhelmed.
- 1:15That heavy pressure that life can bring when you're juggling family,
- 1:20work, responsibilities, and faith.
- 1:23It's all at once. But here's the good news. God never asked us to carry those burdens alone.
- 1:30So Dr. E, it's great to have you back. I am just curious to know,
- 1:35lately I've been struggling and being overwhelmed myself between my responsibilities
- 1:38at home and parenting, ministry, and this podcast and our podcast.
- 1:43I found myself hitting a wall and there were days I felt drained mentally and
- 1:47spiritually and even today.
- 1:50And it wasn't until I confided in you, which is part of the reason why I wanted
- 1:54to talk about this, a friend, someone who really listens that I know I realized
- 1:59something powerful just moments ago.
- 2:01Sometimes God sends the right people into your life to remind you that you're
- 2:04not meant to do it all on your own.
- 2:07So Dr. E was able to be there with me. And that's why today I wanted to talk
- 2:11about this important episode of reaching out and not bottling things up with
- 2:16your emotions or pretending that everything is fine.
- 2:19Dr. E, as someone who works with so many people on your field dealing with either
- 2:24mental, emotional, spiritual stress? What would you say to someone who feels
- 2:30like they can't talk about what they're going through?
- 2:33Well, Angel, first and foremost, I thank you for your honesty and for sharing
- 2:38because, you know, we here at Half Faith do feel that we are a family and we do feel that you are.
- 2:46You know, although you are our leader, you know, you're also one of us.
- 2:50So you kind of lead from the middle.
- 2:52You don't lead from the front. You don't lead from the back. You're right with us.
- 2:55You always express your humanity, your frailties.
- 2:59You know, the trials and tribulations you go through as a young father,
- 3:03as someone who's studying in, you know, in your theology school in order to
- 3:09get your pastorship and then also working a full time job as well as being a husband,
- 3:14as well as, you know, taking care of all the things that go wrong in an old house.
- 3:18You know you've got a lot on your plate kid and and
- 3:22you know I guess the first thing I would say
- 3:25is I admire the fact that you're
- 3:28able to express yourself when
- 3:32you feel overwhelmed because I have to tell you something that my wife would
- 3:35be the first one to you know jump on jump on this bandwagon with this admission
- 3:40but I am a terrible communicator you know when I walk in the house I could have
- 3:44had absolutely like an ax put in the back of my head and someone will say,
- 3:49you know, she'll say, Hey, did you have a good day?
- 3:51I'll say, yeah, just another day, you know, no, no, nothing.
- 3:55I didn't get an ax in my, Oh, what's that ax in the back of your head? Oh, an ax.
- 3:59I don't know. I don't, I have no idea how that could have possibly happened.
- 4:03So, you know, being a good communicator, being someone who is acknowledging
- 4:08your human journey, right? So God never promised us that it was going to be a smooth ride.
- 4:16You know, life, you know, being the human experience is like a roller coaster.
- 4:22There's ups and there's downs and there's all arounds and
- 4:25there's flippity flops and all sorts of different sort of blood curdling and
- 4:31scary and frightening and terrifying and sad and grievous times that we have
- 4:37to put up with and get through as well as that mix and match with just the joyous,
- 4:43glorious days, you know, and, and, you know, I live through,
- 4:46I look at you as sort of like, almost like a, a time capsule of,
- 4:51of my life 30 years ago, you know, when my kids were little and,
- 4:55you know, they would scream and yell and have tempered tantrums.
- 4:58And while I was studying for my boards or trying to do this or that,
- 5:02trying to get things done, you know, just so many distractions.
- 5:06So that was kind of a long way of saying thank you.
- 5:10Yeah. You know, and I appreciate that. You know, I think that I,
- 5:13and I have a follow-up question for you.
- 5:15You said you bottle things up and you wouldn't even know, is there,
- 5:18is, was there, is there a point in time where you finally just let it out or.
- 5:24What, what, if you don't mind me asking, how do you do it?
- 5:27How do you vent? Some people go to the gym, some people read,
- 5:31some people take a bath. I don't know. What does Dr. E do?
- 5:35Yeah. So I think a lot of it is also my training in school, you know,
- 5:39doctors are taught, you know, that you can, you know, you're taking care of
- 5:43sick people and your own problems and issues have to become secondarily.
- 5:49And then as a father, exactly the same. And as a husband, exactly the same.
- 5:54So we're kind of taught, you know, societal, you know, role models,
- 5:59you know, teach us to try to be strong and brave and silent.
- 6:03And, and I think that, you know, that's not healthy, right? So I think the new
- 6:08generation is getting better with their feelings.
- 6:11So to answer your question, nature.
- 6:14So I'm a nature guy. So getting on the bike, getting on a hike,
- 6:18putting on hiking shoes and going down to the Goshen trail, very simple,
- 6:22simple stuff, treating yourself well.
- 6:24You and I mentioned about just you not having time for yourself,
- 6:28you know, trying to make that time.
- 6:30There are, there are times when I notice, you know, that, and you have to be proactive.
- 6:35So for instance, if I know at work that I'm going to have a really long day
- 6:39and then I have meetings at night and I can't do any exercise or take care of myself,
- 6:44then I'll go to the Goshen trail at four 30 in the morning to do just a 45 minute something.
- 6:51Um, and then get to work on time in order to get my day going. But.
- 6:57I've already paid myself first, right? So I've already taken care of myself
- 7:00and my health needs before I have to go through the strenuous day and then the
- 7:04meetings and things like that.
- 7:06So that's one bit of advice, Angel, is to make sure that you don't let everything
- 7:11that's overwhelming you take priority over yourself.
- 7:14Now, today, your mom was your savior, right? So your mom for a bit allowed you
- 7:20to catch up with your work, you know, with your schooling, with your pastor
- 7:23school, get your assignments and your quizzes done.
- 7:26And, you know, you mentioned about not having, you know, not getting to the
- 7:30gym in a while and you look great by the way, but that doesn't mean that you, you have to stop.
- 7:35You have to continue to go take care of your health.
- 7:38I have to eat right. I know that you've lost a ton of weight and you look beautiful,
- 7:42but you still need to eat.
- 7:43You need that energy, right? So it's almost like, again, we use the analogy
- 7:48again and again, either on your podcast or my podcast. That's the analogy of
- 7:52the airplane that loses pressure and the oxygen masks come down.
- 7:58They say, don't put the oxygen mask on the child first, put the oxygen mask
- 8:03on yourself first, get yourself stable, and then you could attend to the needs of the others.
- 8:09So whether my patients or your children or whatever you're schooling,
- 8:13if you're not the best version of yourself, then you're not going to be able to help anybody.
- 8:19Well said. And, you know, I think I'm going to tie this all up,
- 8:22of course, because I know at this point somebody's going to say,
- 8:25well, I'm curious how he's going to turn this into a motivational, spiritual spot, right?
- 8:30Before I do that, I think I also want to, and I think you'll back me on this,
- 8:34as a husband, too, you know, your number one supporter should be your spouse.
- 8:41And one of the things that I need to work on is also being a better example
- 8:46of communicating when I am down.
- 8:49My biggest thing is I don't want to bring her down. I don't want to bring your
- 8:54spouse down but guess what?
- 8:55You marry that person because of these reasons because at the end of the day,
- 9:00when things go bad, they need you to be there to pick themselves up and I always
- 9:07feel like I have to be that person but you know what? I got to put my wife to do that for me.
- 9:11Yeah. And also don't forget, like there's always like, you know,
- 9:14the math is the math, right?
- 9:15So if you try to hide something or if you try to, you know, be too stoic and
- 9:20you're overwhelmed and you're not sharing it, then what will happen is she'll
- 9:24say, honey, can you pass the salt?
- 9:26And you'll say, what? What are you talking about?
- 9:29Salt is right there. Get it yourself. And like, she'll be like,
- 9:33wow, you know, where'd that come from?
- 9:35And it's like, it's not because she wanted the salt and she didn't grab it herself.
- 9:39Because you have everything that's still in you that you haven't gotten out.
- 9:44I agree. And that's why I will say the best line I've ever heard and still use
- 9:48today is, when you're right and you're rude, then you're wrong.
- 9:52So don't do that, husbands.
- 9:53Let me point out to what I'm gonna do with spiritually.
- 9:56In my mind, since I've actually been studying this, it reminds me of Galatians.
- 10:00Galatians chapter six, verse number two, which says, and I'm paraphrasing here
- 10:05because I gotta go by my memory.
- 10:06Carry each other's burdens and
- 10:09in the way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
- 10:14And it's a beautiful reminder that God never intended for us to carry our struggles alone.
- 10:20He calls us to support one another, to be that friend, that voice,
- 10:25that hand to lift someone up when they fall.
- 10:29And let me tell you, none of us will, if we feel like you're falling,
- 10:32the hand is now there for you to be picked up.
- 10:36If you're Like you've been too much lately. Please know this.
- 10:41You're not forgotten and you are not alone.
- 10:44Find a friend, confide in them, and most importantly, confide in God.
- 10:49He's waiting for your call. So just call out to him. Let's pray.
- 10:53Heavenly Father, thank you for being with us today. And we welcome you before
- 10:56us today with heavy hearts. So many of us are overwhelmed.
- 10:59I know I am. I'm tired and unsure of what tomorrow will hold.
- 11:03But we know that you are our strength and our comfort and our peace.
- 11:09So Lord, remind us to lean on one another, to open up and to be honest and to
- 11:15trust in your timing and lift every burden that we've carried alone and fill
- 11:20us with your peace that passes all understandings in your precious name as we
- 11:25pray and say thank you. Amen.
- 11:28Friends, as you start this week, remember your struggles. don't define you.
- 11:34Again, your struggles don't define you. Your faith does.
- 11:38Confide, connect, and trust that God's hand is already guiding you through it
- 11:44because you matter. And never forget.
