- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday. If you can see us, which I
- 0:13assume that you can, you'll recognize the gentleman.
- 0:16I guess that's on your far right.
- 0:18That's Rob Peetz, our movie guy, truly our live event guy and
- 0:22he's back this week to discuss with Jason and IA movie called
- 0:26The Bride. Jason, great to see you.
- 0:28And Rob, welcome back. I my hat to the I'm, I'm doing,
- 0:34I'm doing OK. I'm doing OK.
- 0:36We saw a movie on the weekend. It was called The Bride and
- 0:39we're going to talk about it. We're going to talk the F out of
- 0:42it. As usual, I did not see it, so I
- 0:45will ask many questions so that I can leave here thinking I have
- 0:48seen it and the way we like to start these things off, Rob,
- 0:52just to familiarize you with the format, we do two shots during
- 0:54the show so it. Can be two.
- 0:56Shots of anything or nothing, but yeah, it's your choice.
- 0:59That's how flexible it is. Barry, why don't you kick us
- 1:01off? What is your first shot of this
- 1:03healthy episode for you? Yeah, this is a sober one.
- 1:05It's some of that pre workout, the ground up clitoris of
- 1:09Godzilla and it tastes like fresh boysenberry.
- 1:12So I'm very excited about that. Rob, what have you got?
- 1:14Probably something similar. Very similar if I know you.
- 1:17Strawberry bubbly basically where I'm at.
- 1:20Yeah, good. Thanks and I'm in support.
- 1:24I am drinking water with a lemon squeezy in a little travel
- 1:28bottle for some reason in case I want to go for a little walk
- 1:30around while you're talking about the show.
- 1:32Well, that's your post workout, right?
- 1:34I mean you, you've already had it.
- 1:35I. Did a workout, You're right.
- 1:36So it's post workout with the lemon.
- 1:37Squeezy or not, lemon. Cheers, Chin.
- 1:40Chin. All right, gentlemen, let's give
- 1:44a bride. Let's.
- 1:46I'm just going to turn you guys loose who would like to start
- 1:48off. Talking about this cinematic
- 1:50feast, I was very excited about this movie, and Rob knows I was
- 1:54very excited. This was a Rob pick though, but
- 1:56I was very excited. The trailer left me hopeful.
- 1:58I thought we were going to see something brand new.
- 2:00We saw something new, all right, but it was not anything all that
- 2:04interesting. Rob, why don't you take it from
- 2:07here? Well, it's it's kind of a what
- 2:11if kind of situation. It, it, it's about Frankenstein
- 2:15and what if Frankenstein was still alive 100 years after he
- 2:19was born? And he's kind of just out there
- 2:20doing his thing because he's, he's able to be and he is
- 2:24really, really needing a partner of some kind.
- 2:26The, you know, the, the, the original bride of Frankenstein
- 2:29never happened in this case. So he is now out there in 1930s
- 2:33Chicagoland looking for a bride. And he comes, he knows a doctor,
- 2:38he's been reading, he's a smart guy to some degree, he's a
- 2:40little smart. So he's been reading this, this
- 2:43particular doctor, her books on on this stuff.
- 2:47And he thinks she can probably do this for him.
- 2:50So she comes to him or he comes to her and and asks if if she
- 2:54can help him get a bride basically, basically like the
- 2:58original movie to some degree. So a bunch of like coincidences
- 3:02and circumstances allow that to happen very quickly, which is
- 3:05kind of part of why this movie is a bit weird and a little bit
- 3:09understated and, and how it's been put together.
- 3:11But it just kind of happens. And we get this this bride
- 3:16character that comes in and she's quite chaotic and fun to
- 3:19watch. And the two of them are really
- 3:21fun together for the most part. But the movie has about 5
- 3:25different plot lines going at the same time, which really
- 3:27makes it kind of a little bit too much Barry and I.
- 3:31I think what I wanted was gangster version of a, a, a
- 3:36version of Frankenstein that lives in gangsterville in the
- 3:3830s in Chicago, gets a bride. And then they go on sort of a
- 3:45Bonnie and Clyde style thing where they rob banks, they do
- 3:47stuff and they're always being chased 'cause that's what the
- 3:50monsters are anyway, They're always being chased.
- 3:52So that was kind of a theme in this movie, but it didn't really
- 3:56do that. It was a bunch of other things.
- 3:57There was like sort of a, a, a detective story.
- 4:01There was like a what else was? There was like a dog.
- 4:03The story of the Doctor Who helped raise her from the dead.
- 4:08There was now this. Was a Maggie Gyllenhaal
- 4:11production, wasn't it? And who, who was in it?
- 4:14I I didn't even really pay that close attention to it.
- 4:19Yeah, it's Christian Bale. It's the Moss.
- 4:20Right. Christian Bale?
- 4:22Yeah. And then I don't remember the
- 4:24the bride. I've never seen her before, but
- 4:25she's like a Scottish actress. Jesse Buckley.
- 4:28I'm, I'm looking it up right now, Jesse.
- 4:30Buckley That's right. And then Jake Gyllenhaal is
- 4:33shoehorned into this movie as well.
- 4:34Maggie's brother. He gets to play like a 1920s
- 4:37dancing vaudeville *. Like superstars.
- 4:40Right. There's like 5 different things
- 4:42going on in this movie and none of them are particularly of
- 4:45interest. And the scenes are very flat.
- 4:47There's no emotion. The dialogue is very stilted.
- 4:52I don't remember a time when I've been to the movies recently
- 4:54where Rob has leaned over to me so many different times during
- 4:57the movie to comment on the scene we just watched.
- 5:00Yeah. That's how it like, he wasn't
- 5:02holding your attention, Rob, very much because you were
- 5:04commenting way more than you ever have because you were, I
- 5:07think, bored. And I was kind of bored too.
- 5:09Like if this movie was stitched together like Frankenstein's
- 5:12face and it doesn't really hang together all that great.
- 5:16And frankly, I was just like, what is going on?
- 5:18This detective story that they shoehorned in with penélope Cruz
- 5:23and this other kind of wanker guy that they paired him up
- 5:26with. There was a zero chemistry
- 5:28between these two it. Was Peter 0 like nobody other
- 5:31guy? Yeah.
- 5:32We didn't care about anything that they were doing, any of
- 5:34their exchanges in the car. It was.
- 5:37Just. It was just.
- 5:38So there's a couple of ties. There's a couple of ties with
- 5:41them. Yeah, it wasn't great.
- 5:42There was. There was some ties with them to
- 5:44the main story. The detective has a tie and the
- 5:48penélope Cruz character who's like a detective, but because
- 5:52she's a woman, she's not really being taken seriously.
- 5:55And that's all sort of part of this feminist uprising that
- 5:59happens after the bride becomes exposed.
- 6:02And that is very shoehorned in. That could have been a lot
- 6:05better. They could have just made that
- 6:07the story, made that up the Side Story to the main love story
- 6:11between the two of them. And it would have been fine.
- 6:13But instead they tossed in the detective, the, the woman, the
- 6:17the woman scientist. And it just kind of becomes like
- 6:20we're, we're hearing, why are we even talk?
- 6:22Why are we with these detectives?
- 6:24I don't care about these guys. I want to see Frankenstein and
- 6:26the Bride do more Frankenstein and the Bride stuff.
- 6:29Did the do you think any of those were shoehorned in?
- 6:33Like put in after maybe audiences reacted to a test
- 6:36screening and they went back in and needed some more stuff.
- 6:39It's hard to say. I mean, it's hard to I, I does
- 6:42feel like it's a two hour and 7 minute long movie.
- 6:44So maybe it was supposed to be a longer movie, but I just, there
- 6:49was a couple of moments where I felt like that.
- 6:50Was out of and you feel every. Minute they edited that out of
- 6:54sequence yeah there was like yeah, just a couple of moments
- 6:57what why why did we why are we here we just saw this and
- 7:01shouldn't that have happened before that happened well.
- 7:04That's what I'm saying. You mentioned a few times during
- 7:06the movie like there was too many conveniences, like the
- 7:10detective overhearing critical plot information that again, we
- 7:14weren't being shown the plot. We were being explained the plot
- 7:19throughout almost the entire movie.
- 7:21It was like all a lot of talking and very little in the way of
- 7:24delivering the action. And so that was frustrating too.
- 7:27The whole thing was a mess. This was just like a a plate of
- 7:30spaghetti on the floor. This sounds like primate like
- 7:34when you explain primate no. Primate was better than this.
- 7:37Well, that I'll, I'll take that. But my point being you said it
- 7:40was like it things were explained to you very quickly to
- 7:42kind of move things along as opposed to shown.
- 7:44I would agree with that. I I actually said this exact
- 7:47thing to Barry on the way out. To me it was it was similar in a
- 7:50way. The other one was a lot more
- 7:51cohesive because it was so simple, but this is a much more
- 7:54fun. Entertaining.
- 7:55This is a much more complex, complex story that they're that
- 7:59they're trying to tell and it doesn't really deliver in the
- 8:02end. However, however, that all said,
- 8:05it was a, it had beautiful moments, like visually beautiful
- 8:09moments, some great 1930s stuff in it, some some great period
- 8:14like costumes and pieces and moments.
- 8:16I thought Frankenstein was Christian Bale's Frankenstein
- 8:20was, was interesting. He was fun.
- 8:22He was an interesting version of that.
- 8:24And the bride I thought was, was great.
- 8:26I just wish, I wish there was more consistency there, you
- 8:30know? Right.
- 8:31Did he have the bolts? He, no, he didn't have the
- 8:34bolts, but he what he did have the he did have a Flathead and
- 8:36it was, he was stitched. Yeah, but it was a it was.
- 8:39A Warner Brothers. Yeah, it's a Warner Brothers
- 8:42movie. So they couldn't they couldn't
- 8:43really steal the Universal kind of look, right, But it's close
- 8:47enough because Frank it. Was.
- 8:49Close, right? Yeah, Frankenstein's in the
- 8:51public domain, but not the Frankenstein.
- 8:53With the bolts. I got it.
- 8:55OK, you got to pay up for the Bolts, Jay.
- 8:57Well. You know how many bolts
- 8:58Frankenstein has 2 bolts on his neck.
- 9:01And in our show, we do two shots, so.
- 9:03Flawless, dude. You really are the maestro.
- 9:07Let's go. Kick us off what have you got
- 9:10for shot #2? Strawberry bubbly.
- 9:14Nice. Barry, I'm sticking with the pre
- 9:17workout Jay. At the post post workout.
- 9:20Gentlemen love it. Cheers, Chin.
- 9:22Chin. Here's to you guys.
- 9:26So yeah, you know, I wouldn't rush out and see it.
- 9:31Also, another thing that Rob noticed was there's a shifting
- 9:35aspect ratio. When you see this in IMAX, some
- 9:38of it is an IMAX full screen and then some of it isn't.
- 9:41And some of the stuff that is full screen, you're wondering
- 9:44why full screen. It's like a close up of like
- 9:47Frankenstein in the car. It's like he's just driving or
- 9:50he's just sitting there as a passenger.
- 9:51Like it's like, why is this IMAX?
- 9:54But they you know it, just like I said, it's a mess.
- 9:59A total, not her mess. It is all I.
- 10:02Enjoyed primate so much better. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:05Primate 10 out of 10 and compared to that just slog and
- 10:10Jay, you would have felt every minute of that two O 7.
- 10:14In fact, I I would. I could see you getting up and
- 10:16saying, you know what? I'm out.
- 10:18I'm good. You would have been.
- 10:19Yeah. It's just.
- 10:20I'm sorry. I'm bored.
- 10:21I mean, as much as Rob. Rob said it.
- 10:23It looks fantastic. Beautiful.
- 10:26They spent money on the and. The bride, the bride is fabulous
- 10:29and all that stuff. She's great and she could have
- 10:31been. She's the only.
- 10:32Thing that's in a better movie and.
- 10:35One more thing we should we should touch on this really
- 10:37quickly. There was a cool plot device.
- 10:39They actually put Mary Shelley the writer.
- 10:41That was really her spirit is the one who inhabits the body of
- 10:46this bridewoman. So she has like a dual
- 10:48personality and she's flipping back and forth between Mary
- 10:51Shelley, like 1818 Mary Shelley with her British accent.
- 10:55And then she flips back to being just an American girl from
- 10:58Chicago. So that was cool.
- 10:59She's like a thesaurus. She actually like.
- 11:02So basically, while she's alive, Mary Shelley is is kind of a
- 11:05spirit and she comes to the movie viewer as a spirit talking
- 11:09in this pitch dark, sort of 1810 looking kind of visual and
- 11:14stuff. And she's like, I I want to make
- 11:16I want to make the real story. You know, that I want to tell
- 11:19the real story. Like a Frankenstein was just
- 11:21something I was kind of forced to do.
- 11:23I'm going to tell the real story.
- 11:24I'm going to do it for real. And she actually kind of
- 11:26inhabits this girl as she's alive, kind of puts herself into
- 11:30her, and she kind of is flashing in and out of being this Mary
- 11:34Shelley character back to herself again, who's also a bit
- 11:37of a crazy. She's, you know, she's a bit
- 11:39over the top as a character anyway.
- 11:41You know, it's probably like a flapper of that era or something
- 11:43who's a little bit yay, you know, party girl.
- 11:47Just to clarify for me, like so Mary Shelley, the writer of
- 11:51Frankenstein is in the book and Frankenstein is is a real
- 11:55monster though, like how does that work if she wrote the book
- 11:58about Frankenstein and then. Yeah, I, I it's all a fantasy.
- 12:02That's where there's no answers to any of this stuff.
- 12:04It's just OK, really. That seems like.
- 12:07AI really love, I love the idea of Mary Shelley inhabiting the
- 12:10bride and sort of being a part of that personality because it
- 12:14really does sort of sort of like come out in in erratic, fun
- 12:16ways. That makes sense.
- 12:18Yeah. But but and and the actress
- 12:20again portrayed that it would beautifully like she was fucking
- 12:23great but. Coming back and forth.
- 12:25It was good. Yeah, she was.
- 12:26Like the dark half that Barry knows that and you know, it's
- 12:30like the Stephen King character that was well in the book.
- 12:34That was the only difference is that's a George RR or a Romero
- 12:38film and that was well done versus this is just a steaming
- 12:41bowl of dribble anyway. But let me.
- 12:44Let me think we should add. I wanted to add the, the one
- 12:46thing about the, the we, we turned, there's a, there's a
- 12:48couple of musical numbers in here.
- 12:50They're not really, really singing, but they're, they're
- 12:52dancing. And, and at one point I, I
- 12:54looked at, I looked at them and I said, like on the second
- 12:56number or somebody like, are we watching Joker 2?
- 13:00This is like Joker 2. It's Harlequin and the Joker,
- 13:03but they're just people. But it's Frankenstein.
- 13:05And there was also a nod to what?
- 13:09What's the Mel Brooks movie again?
- 13:11Baseball saddles. No.
- 13:14Neither of those two. Young Frankenstein Young.
- 13:16Frankenstein. Oh yeah.
- 13:17Right. Where where Christian Christian
- 13:20Bale says putting on the Ritz was was was a the big dance
- 13:23number in in in in that movie. But, well, that was all.
- 13:27Here's. This movie.
- 13:29He also does a fair bit of crying.
- 13:31The Frankenstein monster really shouldn't be crying.
- 13:34Like he's a bit of a wimp. Like he has one scene where he
- 13:36beats a couple of guys to death. That's great.
- 13:39That's what you expect from Frankenstein.
- 13:40And then a few scenes later, he's having a meltdown about
- 13:43something else. Like, you know, Oh my, my cheese
- 13:45sandwich is undercooked. It was something so stupid that
- 13:48you're like, well, what are we talk?
- 13:49What are we talking about here? That didn't bother me so much.
- 13:52I didn't mind having emotion with with that character, but I
- 13:55understand why. No one.
- 13:57Why even connect the tear ducts when you're putting them back
- 13:59together? No, you just leave those undone.
- 14:03Before we get to star ratings and I can guess, yeah, hold on,
- 14:08hold that thought. I I heard as we were going
- 14:10through the weekend when it debuted that it did not do well
- 14:13like it quite underperformed expectations.
- 14:15So it like people just got the word that just don't go see this
- 14:20movie on. Ron already had the word on our
- 14:22way to the theater. I was.
- 14:23Like I'm so. Excited.
- 14:24It's getting great reviews. He's like, no, it's not.
- 14:26I mean, it's getting very, very average reviews, I think.
- 14:29I think the problem is, is that I think part of why I really
- 14:32wanted to see it is because to me, it seemed like an original
- 14:35idea. And you don't see anymore,
- 14:37right? So I was like, I'm on board for
- 14:38an original idea. And that was my selling point to
- 14:40Barry. Seems like an original movie.
- 14:42That's why not? Why not?
- 14:43They deserve money that if they're trying things, right?
- 14:45So yeah, yeah. And it was original, but it was
- 14:49also kind of, they could have just, since it could have just
- 14:51been better, you know? Yeah, it was just poorly
- 14:53executed, but they still get full marks for trying to do
- 14:56something original. Yeah, 100.
- 14:59Percent. OK, let's go to star ratings
- 15:02then. Barry, why don't you kick us off
- 15:03'cause I don't think you could hold that back any longer.
- 15:05You know what at? 12 out of seven, yeah.
- 15:08It's not my usual glowing review.
- 15:10I usually like everything that I see, as you guys well know, but
- 15:13this one I just felt I I felt out of it because the the scenes
- 15:17were just really flat. The dialogue was flat.
- 15:19The the acting, aside from what we've already touched on, the
- 15:22bride being absolutely the stand out.
- 15:24I mean, even Christian Bale, who's extremely skilled, he
- 15:27couldn't save this train wreck of a movie.
- 15:29It was just messy and like they were shoehorning way too many
- 15:33plots into this story. They could have just simplified
- 15:35it. They could have taken the the
- 15:37primate approach and it would have been very enjoyable, but
- 15:40they didn't so. Right to the end.
- 15:41Yeah, 100%, yeah. You know, sadly, I just it's
- 15:45boring and it is very much like Joker 2.
- 15:47Like Rob said, it's so that if you saw that, then avoid this
- 15:51one. I'm I'm giving this one like
- 15:52it's a one out of five. It's just bad.
- 15:54Lowest star rating ever on the show.
- 15:56It's terrible. That is easily the lowest star
- 15:57rating I've ever heard you give in my life.
- 15:59Yeah, I know. And I, it gives me no pleasure
- 16:01to do it. I.
- 16:02Don't. Like it?
- 16:03I got to be honest with you. But who can't?
- 16:05Sucked. Rob, how about you?
- 16:06I'll give you the real score and this, this is the, this is the
- 16:10real score. I would say, I would say, I
- 16:15would say this is probably a 2 1/2 or a three.
- 16:19And I think it may be a three because it is visually stunning.
- 16:23There is enough, there is enough good acting in it from, from,
- 16:26from the bride and from Christian Bale here and there
- 16:29that I, I think is, I think you can sit back at home and watch
- 16:33it and be OK with it. You might want put it split into
- 16:35two parts, but I don't think it's, it's worse than that.
- 16:38I think it's it's, it's got enough good stuff in it.
- 16:41It is just a bit long and too many plot lines.
- 16:44That's it. But I think you gave like
- 16:45Superman, a three star. Yeah, this isn't.
- 16:49This isn't tying up unless you saw.
- 16:51That's a big difference between like, yeah, OK.
- 16:54I got, I mean, it's like to me it's a six.
- 16:56It's a six out of 10. It's like a just above average,
- 16:59but not by much, you know? Well then, before we go, Rob,
- 17:03give us what is instead of this Frankenstein movie.
- 17:05What's the best Frankenstein movie to check out?
- 17:07For our viewers. And listeners.
- 17:10Probably the probably the original.
- 17:12Just the original Universal Frankenstein movie.
- 17:14It was just a great movie. It's fun to watch.
- 17:16I just watched it last Halloween for the first time in a while.
- 17:20Enjoyed it? It's very short too, right?
- 17:22It's like an hour long. Yeah, yeah, they're.
- 17:23All very short. That would be great to watch.
- 17:26And Barry, why don't you take us out, Let us know what's coming
- 17:28up because I know you guys have got some other movies coming up
- 17:30that you're going to see. Maybe you'll review them on the
- 17:32show here. Yes, we will.
- 17:34We have a couple scheduled for April at the time of this
- 17:37recording. So we have nothing more for this
- 17:39month. We had talked talked about going
- 17:40to see Hail Mary, but that is just not lining up with our
- 17:43individual schedules. But I think, Rob, you and I are
- 17:45going to go check out the Super Mario Galaxy, and I think there
- 17:48was one other one you were wanted to see in April.
- 17:50Yeah, maybe. I don't remember what it was,
- 17:52but yeah, it's. Some The Mummy We're going to
- 17:54wait and see at The Mummy. Mummy.
