- 1:17journey through Matthew 14, 22 through 33, revealing the need to keep our focus
- 1:23on Jesus and not our circumstances.
- 1:26Come follow us through the scriptures
- 1:28as we dive deeply into our responsibility to get out of the boat.
- 1:34Hello, and thank you for joining us in this podcast of Woman at the Well Ministries. Let's pray.
- 1:40Our kind and most gracious, dear Heavenly Father, Lord, we come to you earnestly
- 1:44asking for your presence upon this message, that you would clean our hearts
- 1:49out and that you would remove anything that doesn't belong.
- 1:53Lord, we ask you to search the crevices, the closed doors, the very corners
- 1:59of our hearts to purify them, to make them what you would have them to be.
- 2:05Lord, prepare our hearts and our minds for this message.
- 2:09Remove me from it and may you be fully seen and high and lifted up.
- 2:14Lord, we ask for your blessings and your favor.
- 2:18And may you help us hear exactly what you would have for each of us to hear.
- 2:24In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
- 2:28We're going to talk about a very familiar scripture tonight,
- 2:32especially if you listen to me at all.
- 2:35You know, I talk often about Peter on the water, and it comes out of Matthew
- 2:40chapter 14, verses 22 through 33.
- 2:43But before we do, I want to draw your attention to a truth that's going to frame
- 2:50this account in Matthew 14, 22-33.
- 2:56And that verse in James 4, 8 says this, draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
- 3:05So as you take a step towards God, you can be absolutely certain that God is moving towards you.
- 3:13He is chasing after you because he loves you.
- 3:16And he wishes that none should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
- 3:22And he tells us that we are to cleanse our hands, ye sinners.
- 3:27In other words, he's saying, give yourself over to the ways of the Lord.
- 3:31Allow the Lord to touch you and cleanse you from the top of your head to the
- 3:37bottom of your feet and purify every part of your hearts.
- 3:41And don't be distracted by the things of this world and be careful to place me first.
- 3:49Purpose in your heart to stay focused on Jesus, because he tells us that we
- 3:56need to cleanse ourselves and to purify ourselves and to not be double-minded.
- 4:03It's time that we get busy doing the work of the Lord, Serving God with our greatest efforts.
- 4:13Loving him with our whole mind, strength, body, and soul.
- 4:17And allowing him to be not only God, because he is, but God of our life.
- 4:24Lord of our life. King of our heart.
- 4:28This is what Matthew 14, 22-33 teaches us.
- 4:34It teaches us to get
- 4:37out of the boat we
- 4:41all have a work to do we all
- 4:44have a calling on our life we all have
- 4:47gifts and skills that he's given us for the good of the kingdom to glorify him
- 4:54to teach and preach the gospel to those around us to share his love his joy
- 5:01his peace and his goodness to all.
- 5:05This is what it means to get out of the boat.
- 5:11And when we take one step of courage, when we take one step of faith.
- 5:18When we do what he's asked us to do, he not only meets us where we are,
- 5:23he comes to us and takes us to where we need to be.
- 5:27And that is clearly demonstrated in Matthew 14, verses 22 through 33.
- 5:35Read with me, please.
- 5:37And straightway Jesus constrains his disciples to get into a ship and to go
- 5:43before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
- 5:48And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray.
- 5:56And when the evening was come, he was there alone.
- 6:01But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves,
- 6:06for the wind was contrary.
- 6:08And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus went unto them walking on the sea.
- 6:12And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit.
- 6:19And they cried out for fear.
- 6:22But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer. It is I, be not afraid.
- 6:31And I and Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto
- 6:36thee on the water. And he said, Come.
- 6:39And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
- 6:45But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid. And beginning to sink,
- 6:50he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
- 6:55And immediately, and immediately, Jesus stretched forth his hand and caught
- 7:01him and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
- 7:06And when they were coming to the ship, the wind ceased.
- 7:11Then they that were in the ship came and worshiped him, saying of a truth,
- 7:16Thou art the Son of God. May the Lord have his richest blessing on the reading of his word.
- 7:23When we begin to start teasing out the pieces of Matthew chapter 14,
- 7:32verses 22 through 33, this account of Peter doing the miraculous.
- 7:38We often miss the opening, and the opening is all about obedience.
- 7:46And if you want to do big and mighty and great things for the Lord,
- 7:51you're going to have to be obedient.
- 7:52You're going to have to go where he says go.
- 7:55You're going to have to trust him to provide the way, and you're going to have
- 7:59to trust him for the results.
- 8:02You've got to get out of the boat, the boat of your calling,
- 8:07the boat of your comfort, the boat of what you know, the boat of your pride,
- 8:13and the boat of you being captain.
- 8:18You've got to get out of the boat, be focused on Jesus Christ,
- 8:23and you must follow him in all his ways.
- 8:28When you see him say that Jesus constrained his disciples to get in a ship,
- 8:35what he's saying is that Jesus directs the disciples to get in a ship,
- 8:40and he sends them off ahead of himself.
- 8:44And you say to yourself, well, what's important about that? Well,
- 8:47here's what's important about that, and we'll talk more about it later.
- 8:51But he wasn't going to be in the ship with them,
- 8:55and it wasn't all that long ago that he
- 8:58had been in a ship asleep when the
- 9:01boys were in the boat and had a problem but they could go wake him up and then
- 9:08he said peace be still and the winds and the waves they ceased but now he's
- 9:14sending them off by themselves and he's not going to be physically present with them.
- 9:22I also believe that it took some obedience because they loved him.
- 9:27They loved him a lot. Jesus loved them.
- 9:32And no doubt, some of them were saying, I don't want to leave him here with
- 9:37a multitude all by themselves.
- 9:39I don't want to be wondering if he's okay, wondering if he has what he needs,
- 9:46how's he going to get across to the other side.
- 9:48I don't want to do that. I need to be with him. I need to be in his presence.
- 9:54In Exodus 33, 15, we are told, And he said unto him, If thy presence go not
- 10:01with me, carry us not up hence.
- 10:03This is such an important piece to understand,
- 10:07because I believe the disciples were in the same place mentally and emotionally
- 10:13that Moses was when he wanted God's presence and God's leadership more than
- 10:20he wanted the destination of the promised land.
- 10:23And so Moses declares to the Israelites that they shouldn't proceed. Don't go.
- 10:29See, the disciples knew the value of the presence of God.
- 10:35They understood the comfort and the care that comes from being in God's presence.
- 10:43And they simply didn't want to go.
- 10:47But he had directed them to go. And so the question remains,
- 10:53do you want to be without his presence?
- 10:57Are you reluctant to proceed without God's visible presence in your situation?
- 11:05Are you a person that just goes headstrong on your own?
- 11:10These boys had learned the value of having God's presence in their life.
- 11:17No doubt you say to me, Kimmy, we don't have him physically here.
- 11:23He never leaves us or forsakes us.
- 11:25He says, call unto me and I will
- 11:27answer thee and show the great and mighty things which thou knowest not.
- 11:30Every situation, every circumstance that you find yourself in,
- 11:35God wants to be part of it.
- 11:37He says, behold, I stand at the door knocking. If you open, I'll come in and you.
- 11:42Hey, I'm knocking on his door in very difficult situations.
- 11:46I'm knocking on his door that he will come and fellowship and sup with me when
- 11:51I am afraid because perfect love casts out all fear.
- 11:56Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
- 12:01And so often we are just as happy as we can be,
- 12:08to go on about our circumstances and not invite God into them. But he says.
- 12:18That we are to be anxious for nothing, but in everything with prayer and thanksgiving,
- 12:22let your requests be made known unto God, and the peace of God will keep your
- 12:25hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
- 12:27He says to be anxious about nothing, but in everything.
- 12:32So every circumstance, every situation, good, bad, or ugly,
- 12:37we need him to be there, and he will be because he never leaves us,
- 12:42but we have to invite his presence to have a role and a place in our life.
- 12:48Too many of us have put him on as Sunday and Wednesday companions.
- 12:55We take him to church with us. We're meeting when we're there.
- 12:59But things that we decide are too simple, we don't ask him about.
- 13:06And situations that we think we can control and we are relying upon our own
- 13:12intelligence, our own knowledge, our own data, well, we just don't bother him with it.
- 13:18But I want you to know he's bigger than any mountain, and he's small enough
- 13:24to live inside your heart, and he loves you from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet,
- 13:30created you in his image, and he's knocking on your heart's door asking you to hang with him.
- 13:38The problem is so many of us right here would not have obeyed because we would
- 13:46have thought it would have been better to stay.
- 13:48And some of us would have obeyed because we don't value who God is.
- 13:54But these disciples were obedient.
- 13:59And even though they knew that they had had a problem previously when they did not have God.
- 14:06They still went. And I think to myself, how difficult must that have been?
- 14:17But more importantly, I think to myself, how difficult is it for us to leave Jesus behind?
- 14:25Do you long to be in his presence? Careful how you answer that.
- 14:30Because he's got wide open arms begging you to call unto him,
- 14:34I'm begging you to give him your burdens and he'll make them light.
- 14:38Begging you to spend time with him.
- 14:40Can you honestly say that you're
- 14:44reluctant to proceed without his presence being seen in your situation?
- 14:49I'm afraid that's not always the case.
- 14:53I think sometimes we leave him behind, not out of obedience,
- 14:58but because we ignored him.
- 15:01But these disciples are teaching us the way to live in his presence And to do
- 15:10miraculous things And it begins with obedience,
- 15:16And as we continue in the passage, it says this It says, and when he had sent
- 15:23the multitudes away He went up into the mountain apart to pray And when the evening was come,
- 15:29he was there alone.
- 15:33There's a lot to learn here. Jesus was fully man, and Jesus was fully God, and he had to pray.
- 15:42How much more do we need to pray if the Son of God found it necessary to pray?
- 15:49And listen, he prayed a long time because he sends them off,
- 15:54and then the multitude goes away, and then he goes out to the other side to
- 15:58pray, and he's still by himself,
- 16:04Praying, when they see him at 3 a.m., he's now moved to abide over the water.
- 16:16So from the time he left to the time at 3 a.m., Jesus is praying.
- 16:24Though he was God, he prayed as a man and found it necessary to petition God through prayer.
- 16:33For strength and answers. The very person that people pray to.
- 16:39Himself as man, prayed to God.
- 16:43We as children of God with a great invitation to come to Him in all ways and
- 16:49all things, we must spend time in prayer, and we must spend time alone.
- 16:59We have got to want to be with Jesus.
- 17:04To the point we don't want to leave him as the disciples did it,
- 17:09to the point that we want to talk to him about all the things in our lives.
- 17:15In Matthew 6, 6, he says that we're to pray in a closet and,
- 17:22the Father will reward you openly. It's wonderful to have prayer partners. I do.
- 17:29And they have a tremendous place in our life of prayer.
- 17:33But there are just some things that you have to pray about between you and God.
- 17:38There's just some business you have to do that's just you and God.
- 17:44And as a result of that, we must spend some time alone in prayer.
- 17:49I once heard as a child that seven days makes
- 17:53one w-e-e-k week and
- 17:58seven days without prayer makes one week w-e-a-k we need to pray without ceasing
- 18:08we need to be instant in season and out of season we need to pray within our
- 18:14hearts and we need to live with an attitude of prayer.
- 18:18How much do you pray?
- 18:21When do you pray? Do you have set times that you pray?
- 18:25As we continue to look, it says, but the ship was now tossed in the midst of
- 18:32the sea, and the wind, it was contrary.
- 18:36It was boisterous. It was kicking up. In my mind, I see massive waves,
- 18:42and no doubt they're afraid.
- 18:46They were afraid when he was asleep.
- 18:49How much more afraid are they now that he's not with them physically?
- 18:55And they didn't have the Holy Spirit inside of them. Holy Spirit at that time just lit on people.
- 19:02But here they are. They're in the midst of the storm. He's nowhere to be seen.
- 19:06He's not physically with them.
- 19:09In their mind, they are without him.
- 19:13But they look out of the boat, and there on the sea, he is.
- 19:21They just spent all day with him. They've walked with him.
- 19:26They've watched him do incredible miracles, but they could not recognize him.
- 19:32And before we get so self-righteous and wonder how could that be,
- 19:36there are so many times that God is in our midst, his hand is working on our
- 19:41problems, he's blessing us immeasurably,
- 19:45and we simply don't see him at work.
- 19:49We don't recognize him. Part of it is we're not looking for him.
- 19:54Part of it is that we are so caught up in our own selves that we don't have
- 19:59any time to see anything else.
- 20:01But these individuals were afraid, and fear causes us to think illogically.
- 20:08It causes us to make big errors, and it's not of God because perfect love casts out all fear.
- 20:16So Peter's in the boat. The other disciples are in the boat.
- 20:19They look out and they see the Spirit. They're afraid of everything.
- 20:26And Jesus begins to speak. And he says, be of good cheer.
- 20:33It is I. Be not afraid.
- 20:38In John 14, verse 1, he says, let not thy heart be troubled.
- 20:42You believe in God, believe also in me.
- 20:45They're not able to recognize Jesus in the storm, but then he speaks and he says, be of good cheer.
- 20:53And we've heard that before. He tells us in John, be of good cheer.
- 20:58You might have trouble in trials in this world, but be of good cheer for I've overcome the world.
- 21:04And so there's a couple of problems going on right here.
- 21:08And one of them is they don't recognize him, but he reveals who he is.
- 21:12If you are seeking God and you are in his presence, he's going to reveal himself
- 21:18to you. He doesn't want to stay hidden.
- 21:20It's not his goal to be elusive.
- 21:25He wants a relationship with you, a personal relationship with you.
- 21:29And so he will draw nigh to you as you draw nigh to him.
- 21:33But do you trust him in the storm? peter is
- 21:38so sure that if god
- 21:41is speaking and god is on
- 21:44the scene and god is in control that he can do miraculous things and so peter
- 21:51says if it be you lord bid me come So Peter's now on the edge of the boat.
- 22:02The only thing that has changed is he now has an emotional, mental,
- 22:10physical belief that that being is God.
- 22:16So he's gone from not recognizing him to recognizing him. And then...
- 22:25Jesus says, come. And we're faced now with the realization that once you realize
- 22:33who God is, do you trust what he says?
- 22:38That's a big ask. Then we come. Well, that seems like a good idea until you
- 22:44get ready to step in the water, I'm sure.
- 22:46Remember, the storm is still raging. And so in your storm,
- 22:53when you're on the edge of the boat, do you step out as Peter does and trust what he says?
- 23:05Or do you do it your way and shrink and cower and remain in fear?
- 23:12I guess what I'm asking you is, are you a fair weather Christian?
- 23:17He's in the midst of our storms and friends
- 23:21you may start out a day smooth sailing everything going exactly the way you
- 23:26want it everything as it should be but then all of a sudden the winds start
- 23:32blowing the waves start raging the storm is rising and you are in a mess.
- 23:40You recognize him? Because I promise you, I've said it before, and I believe it.
- 23:44You're either in a storm now, you just got out of a storm, or you're on your way into a storm.
- 23:50Because he said a man born of a woman and a few days full of trouble.
- 23:54He said this world is not our home.
- 23:58He explained that the world despised him, and they will despise us.
- 24:03We shouldn't be comfortable.
- 24:06Problems are going to arise. But do you recognize him in your storm?
- 24:12And when he speaks and tells you what to do, are you willing to step out of
- 24:18the boat? Do you trust what he says?
- 24:22In Proverbs 3, 5, 6, and 7, he says that we are to trust in the Lord with all
- 24:27thine heart and to lean not into thine own understanding and in all thy ways
- 24:32acknowledge him and he shall direct thy path.
- 24:35Be not wise in thine own eyes. Fear the Lord and depart from evil.
- 24:42Again, we go back to that James 4, 8.
- 24:45That's the word to cleanse our hands, ye sinners.
- 24:49Purify our hearts and not be double-minded.
- 24:54Here we're told to depart from evil. It's pretty direct. Correct.
- 25:00Walk in the ways of the Lord, not in the ways of the devil or the world.
- 25:06Peter is at the edge of the boat, and if he's like some of us,
- 25:11he'd never get out, because it sounds like a bad idea.
- 25:16Everybody knows you can't walk on water. See, logic will kill you every time.
- 25:23Logic has no faith in it, and in faith, there's no place for logic.
- 25:29Faith is just believing that because God is God, what he says is right.
- 25:38Faith is taking that step out
- 25:41of the boat when you're not even sure where that step is going to land.
- 25:47But he said, Go, and so you go.
- 25:51It's important that you trust what he says in the storm.
- 25:58And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
- 26:05My friend, the anchor holds.
- 26:10Is in the boat, and he's placing the anchor of his life in the hands of Jesus Christ.
- 26:19He takes him at his word when he says, be not afraid.
- 26:23And so as he's keeping his eyes upon Jesus,
- 26:28as he's walking on the water,
- 26:31because he knows in whom he believes,
- 26:35he's persuaded that he will keep it and complete it he knows that he is god
- 26:41and god has asked him to come and so as long as he's following the ways of the
- 26:47lord he understands he can do miraculous things,
- 26:53see we are that same person he's not a respecter of persons when we keep our
- 26:58eyes on the lord we need to know that we will not perish.
- 27:04Psalms 118.6 says, the Lord is on my side. I will not fear.
- 27:10What can man do unto me? In the midst of your storm, sometimes we take our eyes
- 27:17off of Jesus and begin to look at the storm.
- 27:20As long as Peter had his anchor in Jesus, He was doing the miraculous.
- 27:27In John 14, 27, he says, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you,
- 27:33not as the world give I unto you.
- 27:35Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
- 27:39The world didn't give it to you, so the world can't take it away.
- 27:42You have to dump your face and thereby dump your peace.
- 27:47But Peter is walking. He's doing what he cannot do, the miraculous.
- 27:56Anchor holds when the anchor's in Jesus.
- 28:00He says in John 16, 33, These things I have written or spoken unto you,
- 28:05that in me you might have peace.
- 28:08In the world you'll have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I've overcome the world.
- 28:14These words of truth keep Peter firmly on the strength of faith.
- 28:23The disciples are right
- 28:26there in the midst of the storm they've done
- 28:30exactly what god said do they've gone
- 28:33on before him they're in a boat he's no longer with them on their duty to do
- 28:38what god has told them to do they've met a problem they went where they were
- 28:44instructed to go they were afraid they were confused they're doing what they're
- 28:48supposed to do and now they're facing a storm.
- 28:53How many times has that caused us to take our eyes off of Jesus,
- 28:58to not look directly at him, to put on blinders to the world?
- 29:05How many times have we failed to walk by faith and instead walked by sight?
- 29:14Jesus had taken him through the storm before, but now he's not in the boat with him.
- 29:21Doubt. Then he taught them who he was, but he's increasing their faith with each event.
- 29:31He's growing them spiritually, emotionally, physically.
- 29:37He's allowing them to see the depth and breadth of what faith can do.
- 29:41It was faith in Jesus when they awoke him that he used his power to cease the winds and the waves.
- 29:50But he was right there.
- 29:52Now he's not right there in the boat with them, but he's still giving them the
- 29:57power that he has because he's never left them.
- 30:01And now their faith has to be stronger because the storm, the test, is far more difficult.
- 30:11And that's when Peter kicks it up.
- 30:14That's what we have to do. We have to kick up our faith.
- 30:18We've got to get out of the boat, and we've got to remember all that he's brought
- 30:22us through, because without faith it is impossible to please him,
- 30:26and you must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
- 30:32You've got to face your way through.
- 30:35This is what we're told. As the winds kick up as the storms get bad.
- 30:41In Philippians 3, 13 through 14, we are told, Brethren, I count not myself to
- 30:46have apprehended, but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are
- 30:50behind and reaching forth to those things which are before.
- 30:57Pressed toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
- 31:04We've got to leave the world behind. In 2 Corinthians 5, 17,
- 31:09he says, Behold, we are new creatures. Old things are passed away.
- 31:13As we build our muscles of faith by watching him deliver us time and time again,
- 31:20we have to leave our fears behind because he's always with us.
- 31:27We don't need to be jealous of what anybody else has, because we have Jesus,
- 31:32and he's more than enough.
- 31:34And he said, I'll never leave you nor forsake you.
- 31:38Jesus came that night to where they were.
- 31:43He met them where they were, and their faith, as Peter steps out on the boat,
- 31:50he comes towards them, and he came in great power.
- 31:55See, he's not just out there helpless or in the same shape they are in.
- 32:02No, Jesus comes to where you are with great power.
- 32:071 Corinthians 15, 27 tells us that,
- 32:11for he hath put all things under his feet, but when he saith all things under
- 32:15him, is not God, but every other thing is put under him.
- 32:23The winds and the waves, they obey his voice and they bow to his commands.
- 32:29He parts the Red Sea and makes room for the Israelites.
- 32:34He made iron swim. He's created all things under our feet and he allows Peter
- 32:42to walk when Peter's face is in Christ to keep him afloat.
- 32:48But the story doesn't end there. And I'm glad it doesn't.
- 32:53All of us have moments of doubt. And if we didn't know how this story went,
- 33:01we might feel as if we're hopeless and helpless.
- 33:07But Peter, when he saw the wind was boisterous, he sinks.
- 33:15He was afraid because he began to say, no doubt, I can't walk on water.
- 33:21Man cannot walk on water. And he took his eyes off of Jesus.
- 33:27He's out of the boat, but he's trying to do it his way.
- 33:32When we step out of the boat in faith, we've got to commit to walk by face and not by sight.
- 33:39We've got to commit to do it God's way.
- 33:44We've got to commit to trust with all thine heart.
- 33:48We've got to commit to not be wise in our own eyes or to lean into our own understanding.
- 33:54But when we fail, 1 John 1.9 says he's faithful and just to forgive us our sins
- 34:01and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 34:06Friends, you need to be of good cheer.
- 34:08Can you recognize him? Do you believe what he says?
- 34:14You got to get out of the boat. You got to be purposeful in your obedience.
- 34:20That's what God rewards.
- 34:22You've got to believe that you can do miraculous things when you keep your eyes
- 34:30on Jesus and do it his way and you allow him to fight your battle.
- 34:35There's unconditional forgiveness.
- 34:38He's not asking for perfection, but he sure requires a heart that is purposed
- 34:46to follow, A life that is habitually holy.
- 34:54Keep our eyes on him. It all started with obedience.
- 35:011 Samuel 15, 22 says, And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great a delight in burnt
- 35:08offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
- 35:13Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice and to hearken than the fat of rams.
- 35:20Obedience set these disciples on the course for growth and to have miraculous
- 35:29power and to be delivered from the storms they were facing.
- 35:36Tonight, we've got to be obedient.
- 35:41And we've got to keep our focus on Jesus and not on our circumstances.
- 35:47We can't look left or right. We can't employ logic.
- 35:52Faith is what happens when Jesus
- 35:55is on the scene and you believe him for who he is and what he can do.
- 36:01The Lord is on my side.
- 36:03Oh, how he loves you. And oh, how he loves me.
- 36:08You got to show up and you got to get out of the boat if you're going to be
- 36:13effective for the kingdom. You have to obey and follow.
- 36:20It's really that simple. And our entire message can be summed with those words.
- 36:28Obey and follow.
- 36:31Don't look left or right. Keep fully focused on the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
- 36:40You gotta get out of the boat.
