- 0:00Speaker 1: What does a successful student look like to you? Success
- 0:06Speaker 1: might look like an A on an assignment or all
- 0:08Speaker 1: A's in a semester or keeping a perfect 4.0 GPA.
- 0:14Speaker 1: So you stress yourself out. You think that in order
- 0:17Speaker 1: to be successful, you have to strive for perfection. You
- 0:22Speaker 1: have to get all A's. I'm not surprised you are
- 0:25Speaker 1: so stressed out. You've been encouraged to chase perfection your
- 0:29Speaker 1: whole life. Success does not just fall into our lap.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It does take work. It takes focus. It takes dedication.
- 0:38Speaker 1: It takes determination. Most importantly, it takes time. The one
- 0:43Speaker 1: thing it does not take is perfection.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I've discovered that if you get to the root of perfectionism,
- 0:51Speaker 2: you will find fear. You will find fear of failing,
- 0:55Speaker 2: fear of making a mistake, fear of not being good enough,
- 1:00Speaker 2: fear of being judged and those fears can keep you
- 1:04Speaker 2: stuck in a pattern of overthinking and over analyzing everything.
- 1:11Speaker 1: I know the struggle of feeling like you have to
- 1:14Speaker 1: prove yourself because you already know the cards are stacked
- 1:18Speaker 1: against you and you feel the pressure of finishing because
- 1:22Speaker 1: you are so afraid you might fail. That desire to
- 1:27Speaker 1: be successful in the face of so much opposition is
- 1:30Speaker 1: an overwhelming feeling. It's enough to push you into falsely
- 1:35Speaker 1: believing that you must be perfect in everything you do.
- 1:40Speaker 1: But perfection is not a requirement for success. I needed
- 1:45Speaker 1: to let go of the idea that I had to
- 1:48Speaker 1: be perfect in everything I did.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Getting results that don't meet your expectations doesn't mean that
- 1:55Speaker 2: you are on the wrong track. And so far too often,
- 1:59Speaker 2: we expect our rough draft to be perfect. But a
- 2:02Speaker 2: rough draft is a rough draft. It's supposed to be
- 2:06Speaker 2: revised and refined over time. And so you will attempt
- 2:12Speaker 2: some shots and miss, but you will miss 100% of
- 2:15Speaker 2: the shots you never take. Overachievers and perfectionists are extremely
- 2:29Speaker 2: tough on themselves. Being ambitious and wanting to do well
- 2:35Speaker 2: is a great trait. However, being an overachiever can also
- 2:40Speaker 2: work against you. And this is why I want you
- 2:43Speaker 2: to pursue progress instead of pursuing perfection. Giving your best
- 2:52Speaker 2: doesn't guarantee the outcome that you desire. However, your best
- 2:59Speaker 2: is all you can offer. So when you give your best,
- 3:04Speaker 2: just feel good about the fact that you did your best.
- 3:09Speaker 2: It doesn't mean that you're not cut out for this.
- 3:13Speaker 2: It doesn't mean that you have permission to have a
- 3:16Speaker 2: pity party. It doesn't mean that you have permission to self-criticize.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Just feel good about the fact that you believed in
- 3:24Speaker 2: yourself enough to go after a goal that you really
- 3:29Speaker 2: wanted to achieve. Perfectionists are typically also high achievers. And
- 3:35Speaker 2: this means that perfectionists tend to have very high expectations
- 3:40Speaker 2: of themselves. They again, it's a great trait, but it
- 3:45Speaker 2: also means that they are more likely to experience anxiety
- 3:50Speaker 2: and sadness. when a project doesn't turn out the way
- 3:53Speaker 2: they envisioned. And when I find myself falling back into
- 3:57Speaker 2: a pattern of perfectionism, I remind myself to practice self-compassion.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I also try to give myself the same grace and
- 4:08Speaker 2: compassion that I would give to someone else. When you're
- 4:13Speaker 2: a perfectionist, you focus more on your deficits than on
- 4:18Speaker 2: your positive qualities. And even when you put forth a
- 4:22Speaker 2: lot of effort, you might still feel like you didn't
- 4:26Speaker 2: do enough.
- 4:28Speaker 1: We're all a work in progress. It may seem to
- 4:31Speaker 1: you like others have it better. It may seem like
- 4:33Speaker 1: they have it easier. It may seem like the grass
- 4:36Speaker 1: is greener on the other side. That is until you
- 4:39Speaker 1: look at it more closely and realize that it's fake.
- 4:43Speaker 1: But hey, maybe it is real. Still, they are no
- 4:47Speaker 1: better than you or I. So Don't worry about what
- 4:50Speaker 1: others are doing or what they have done. Don't compare
- 4:53Speaker 1: your progress to theirs because they are on a different
- 4:57Speaker 1: journey from you. You didn't get to see their failures,
- 5:01Speaker 1: their lessons learned, their setbacks. You only see the end result.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Don't allow the end result to fool you into thinking, okay,
- 5:11Speaker 1: if I do everything exactly right, make the right choices,
- 5:14Speaker 1: make the right impressions, make the right grades, then I
- 5:17Speaker 1: too will finally have it made. This is a false
- 5:21Speaker 1: narrative of the worst kind. Do not fall for it.
- 5:25Speaker 1: The only person you have to compete with is yourself.
- 5:29Speaker 1: You are not perfect and that is perfectly okay. As
- 5:33Speaker 1: long as you are better today than you were yesterday,
- 5:36Speaker 1: you are progressing.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I want to challenge you to really focus on making progress.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Having a goal of making progress means that you are
- 5:53Speaker 2: focusing on needle moving activities. Making progress means that you
- 6:00Speaker 2: are not critiquing and revising your work for hours. And listen,
- 6:05Speaker 2: progress does not have to be huge. Making progress simply
- 6:11Speaker 2: means that you are taking small steps every day that
- 6:15Speaker 2: will bring you closer to your goals. So instead of
- 6:20Speaker 2: allowing self-doubt to hold you back, begin to take imperfect action.
- 6:26Speaker 2: And in doing so, you will discover that small wins
- 6:31Speaker 2: add up to bigger wins. Do not sweat the small stuff.
- 6:39Speaker 2: I'm gonna have to say that again. Do not sweat
- 6:45Speaker 2: the small stuff.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Contrary to popular belief, practice does not make perfect. It
- 6:53Speaker 1: makes better. If you want proof, just check out any
- 6:57Speaker 1: professional sports team, any professional athlete, any professional musician, any
- 7:03Speaker 1: professional singer, any professional actor. Despite the hours upon hours
- 7:10Speaker 1: of practice, mistakes are made. Games are lost. Wrong notes
- 7:17Speaker 1: are played. Lines are forgotten. Yet the world still somehow
- 7:23Speaker 1: manages to keep spinning. When a mistake is made, learn
- 7:27Speaker 1: from it. Apply those lessons and keep practicing. If you
- 7:33Speaker 1: practice to make better instead of perfect, you will continue
- 7:38Speaker 1: to see progress. When life gets busy, pause, take a breath,
