  The button's big.
• 0:13
[upbeat music] Good afternoon, morning, evening, fair listener. It is Full Spectrum Cycling Goodness number 205. Ah. It says Goodness on the top of the Google Doc.
• 0:31
Goodness. Full Spectrum Cycling Goodness. 205. Yeah. Boy, that's a, that's a couple of, two or three shows there, eh? Where's my documents again? Oh. Can't find them. Can't find the documents.
• 0:41
Yeah, you better look into the documents on your- Don't know what, don't know what we're gonna talk about today... portable computer. Wah, wonder what happening. Eh. Portable computer. So. Um, warm. [laughs] Warm.
• 0:52
It was warm. It's nice. It's been warm out there. It's been nice. Actually rode my bike a couple times in the last week, which I feel good about. How's the shoulder? That is getting better. It's after, after...
• 1:03
What did we? We did something. We rode somewhere, and then it was a little sore the next day, but- Oh, uh- Yeah... frozen snot. Oh, yeah. Frozen snot. That was a couple weeks ago now, wasn't it?
• 1:13
I am actually climbing- It was last week... the hill right now, and oddly enough, still managing to open a beer and tell everyone else to get to the tablets. [laughs] Yeah. You're talented that way. I am.
• 1:23
Uh- He is not... I, I don't even know what, what do we got here? I'm just gonna start at the top of the list. I can't find my documents. [laughs] So last, last week we had the, uh, Motorhead... Was that last week? Yeah.
• 1:36
The Motorhead. Motorhead beer. Motorhead Road Crew beer and- Yeah... at that time it was Ale Asylum- [laughs]... brewed that one, and then I'd noticed that Ale Asylum had been closed for, like, a year- Yeah...
• 1:47
year and a half or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, uh, that one had been around for a little bit and it, it was still drinkable. Yeah. Yeah. It wasn't- Um... fully cured.
• 1:56
Thank you for it being in a can rather than a bottle. Right. Somebody else, some other brewery has taken over brewing that. Uh, Carbon Four. But not the Motorhead beer, I think. Somebody else had a...
• 2:06
I don't know, whatever. Yeah. But Carbon Four- Yeah, yeah... is taking over the Alam- Ale, Ale Asylum... A- Ale, Aleum, the Aleum Asylum- Alam... brand- Oh, I found my documents...
• 2:14
and will bring it back to the market with a renewed focus on its flagship beer, Hoppilicious. Hoppilicious is good. I- It really is. It, it, it's a, it, it's a pretty fantastic IPA.
• 2:26
It's their old- I'll drink- It's in the conversation of ordering. Unfortunately, it's heavy. Eh, I don't get it. I mean, it, it packs a punch. So I don't know what happened with Ale Asylum.
• 2:34
I, well, they were pretty heavily a restaurant-y joint too, weren't they? I think, well, yeah. And then- Well, COVID hurt a lot... well, they kinda transitioned to that. Yeah.
• 2:41
And they probably soaked more money than they thought- Right. So-... into that... well, it's good that Carbon Four's taken it over, 'cause I do like a lot of Carbon Four beers. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
• 2:49
And hopefully they can- I haven't had a Carbon Four for a while... make a go of it. Um- Yeah...
• 2:53
lots of, lots of places kinda closing and things happening that are, I think, still related to the bullshittery of the couple years ago.
• 3:02
But the one that I learned about today, I don't know if anybody else saw it, Kitsbow Clothing Company- I did see that. Yep... is, is shutting down. And by cracky, they, those are some good shirts.
• 3:14
I mean, yes, they're a little spendy, but boy, I love my, I love my Kitsbow.
• 3:19
And they do have a, a going out of business sale, but I checked it out thinking I might score one more shirt, and they were sold out of just what everything I was looking at. But you never know. Wow.
• 3:31
You know, if you're a super extra triple large or you're a very petite person- [laughs]... you may find- Yeah... something still in stock Well, rolling through to the other end [laughs] The triple X category.
• 3:43
On my note there from the show is, you know, triple X Sam is building himself another fat bike. Yeah. It's, I think it's already built up. Um, but he wants to now electrify it.
• 3:54
And as you're saying, that's, that's why he got a bike, is to- Yeah, that's one of them... make one of them electric. One of them, make it electric for coming down and- Our friend's electric... having fun and
• 4:04
then being able to ride home without being exhausted. Well, he's trying to figure out which one, either the Wyatt or the ice cream truck. No, I think that, that's stupid. You, you make the foreign bike electric.
• 4:14
I don't know. I'm thinking that the, the Wyatt would be, you know, that, they're- That'd be cool as shit... they're built well. But- They're strong as hell. I think, uh, why... And he's got that- Why not Wyatt?
• 4:22
He's got that big ass shock on there. You make a good point. Yeah, I don't know. So on the electric... It's been electric bike week here at the, uh, shop. We had a Bare, Barry? B-A-E-R-E. Ba, bar. Barr. It's a Barr.
• 4:40
I think it's a Barr. Sometimes eat at a bar. Uh, sort of cargo-y thing or a kid carrier that has, like, a big box on the front and a- Oh... I'll have a picture of it in the show notes if you wanna see what it is.
• 4:50
But they sent, they send this bike to the consumer and expect the consumer to assemble it or take it to a bike shop, in which, which is what they ended up doing, and they should have just brought it here.
• 5:03
They had already tried- Instead... Yeah... to assemble it themselves. And it was kinda close, but she couldn't get the brakes done in the front. And there was a couple things wrong.
• 5:11
Once we got the brakes working, discovered that the pivot that's underneath this huge box that you have to take apart was really loose, so it was just, eh, probably would've been about the same price to just bring it here- Every year...
• 5:23
and have us assemble it. Right. Um, and so- How was it?
• 5:27
So we c- [laughs] Steven and I ripped around on that thing quite a bit because it's got two wheels in the front and each has a disc brake, and trying to dial that in so it doesn't pull one side or the other side- [laughs]...
• 5:38
was kind of a challenge. Right. Because they're not super spectacular brakes. It's Scandinavian inspired. Oh. Oh. However- Hydraulic?... not made in Scandinavia. No, the bike itself. And, and so the- Oh...
• 5:51
the parts on it are, you know, they're- Mediocre... at best. Uh, but we kinda got it close enough. I said, "You guys are gonna have to be aware that it may pull to one side or the other.
• 6:00
You might wanna consider using just the rear brake for now, and then if you, you know-" What was the price point- "... wear it in"... on this thing? Uh, well, it's 34, but it was on sale for 25.
• 6:09
And it's with an elec- electric motor Um, hub or mid- Hub, rear, rear hub Okay.
• 6:15
Yeah Pretty good size rack mounted battery At, on, uh, on campus today I saw the, what I'm guessing is somewhere in the six plus thousand dollar electric cargo bike rear loader, so long tail.
• 6:29
Had mid drive, belt, Elfin eight. Like, I'm, I'm like, and I, I'm, I think it looked like a Bosch drive. I wasn't sure, but I'm like, "Oh yeah, this is a pricey, short commuter bike." Hmm.
• 6:45
Sounds interesting Uh, cargo bike. It was pretty cool. But it was obviously very, very expensive. Yeah. I, I, I don't know how many of these consumer direct places are, you know...
• 6:55
It, s- w- another thing that was wrong with this, the bar, was the, it only has a cadence sensor. So- Mm-hmm...
• 7:03
it has a disc that has magnets in it that go by another magnet to tell the motor to put power down, but it was so far off kilter that it would only give power for about half a revolution.
• 7:13
So it'd be like, "Er, er, er, er, er, er." Oh, oh, that'd be super annoying. And we could only get it up to, like, eight or 10 miles an hour because it wasn't giving power the whole time.
• 7:23
And then got that figured out, and Steven took it out for a rip, and he was, he said, "Nobody should ride this thing going 20 miles an hour." [laughs] Because it's kinda tippy and it's, you know- Oh, sure...
• 7:33
so we had to figure out how to- But he got it to 20 miles an hour... yeah, had to figure out how to dial back the, uh, the power. I, so we set it on eco mode, and it goes, like, 12, which I think is, is plenty.
• 7:44
Um- Interesting... so that was that thing. Then we ordered Steven's CYC X3 Stealth Gen 5 or 3 or whatever the Super Zoot motor is for his Bullet. Nice. And then the next day, uh, I mean- Is that a mid-drive?
• 8:01
It is a mid-drive. Yeah. And then the next day, Jake came in, Jake Newborn came in and did a different version of a similar drive for his Bullet, so we're gonna be doing a couple of the e-Bullets if anybody's
• 8:12
interest- interested in that. And we will have photos, I would imagine, on the website at some point. That's cool. That's exciting. Yeah.
• 8:22
So it, and then, uh- E-cargo bikes just make sense It's one of the, uh, best uses for it, I would think- Right... for sure. Oh, I remember seeing Peter ripping around the Shorewood zone.
• 8:33
Yeah, he's- That, that bike hauls Whee, whee, whee, holy Christ, does it- Yeah, he's got the, the big- Before it-... hub motor that we put on a, a Zize. Yep. That insanity motor. Yeah, on a cargo bike.
• 8:45
That I- I remember catching that before I realized it was-... that I sent, I sent that down the road to someone somewhere via eBay and- Lucky you-... bye bye to you, motor... 'cause good God, that thing was frightening.
• 8:55
And he- I, I just couldn't rem- like, the first time I saw him, like, ripping, I was like, "What the hell?" Oh, he hauls. K- well, it d- it didn't make... I, I was unawares of the, uh, electrification- Yeah... of it.
• 9:05
Right And I'm just like, "Son, what are his, like, [laughs] calves, like-" Yeah, he-... the size of- He routinely is, is above-... my body... 20 on that bike, and probably many times closer to 30. He's got it.
• 9:19
He's gonna get a bunch of- He rips, man... my 18 650s. I, I hung out with him during the Riverwest '24 meet and greet. Uh, which by the way- I just haven't seen that guy for years...
• 9:28
let's roll into that, the empanada restaurant right up the street, phenomenal. The Casino del Sol. Uh, Sol, yeah. Have not been in yet.
• 9:38
Not- I, I still have a bad taste in my mouth from when it was Riverwest Filling Station. It's not that anymore. No, no, this is- Screw that. No, it is, get rid of it I know, it's just the building.
• 9:44
The building- Crossover... I can't. It just- You can crossover... Brian yelling and making bartenders cry just made me- These empanadas are delicious... made me sad. So sad. And they have ceviche. Ah.
• 9:55
[smacks lips] I could do ceviche. Yeah, hey, see. I'm not a seafood guy, but I do understand some people, including Cleone and Molly, love ceviche. On occasion. I'll let them know. On occasion.
• 10:04
If it lands right and it's done well, boom. Right. When it's like, "Here, have some of this 'cause I can't eat it," kinda thing [laughs] I'm like- I, I-... "Oh, yes. I'm just having shrimp and lime juice right now."
• 10:18
Just a lot of lime juice. I w- I was doing a, uh- Oh my God. [laughs]... I was doing a, a, let's just call it an American tour in Costa Rica, and coming back the tour guide said, "Does anyone like ceviche?"
• 10:29
And Cleone raised her hand hard. She's like, "That guy on that bike right there sells the best ceviche in all of Costa Rica." Fair enough. So we got off and- And he is my cousin... uh, probably. But, but- [laughs]...
• 10:42
we- I had a, I had a similar adventure in Morocco actually [laughs] We got off and we ordered s- we grabbed a container of ceviche from this guy, and it was pretty outstanding ceviche. [laughs] Okay.
• 10:56
I, I, I didn't know where you were gonna lead with this. So yeah, you, you're- You were gonna go tip one way or the other on that one. It's like- On that-... "And we had the worst food poisoning." No.
• 11:02
[laughs] No, it was delicious. Uh-oh. What's going on, Greg? [bell ringing] You guys finally made it. To the top of the hill. Whoa. What you got going over there? Um, a logic bomb that didn't wanna, doesn't wanna open.
• 11:17
Oh, boy. Uh, today- [laughs]... this week we are, are, are going through the rest of the 12 pack of Surly beers- Leftover day... from, yeah, from last week.
• 11:29
So- But I've even gone off track and have the last, uh, It's Not Normal, uh, Zombie Ice from 3 Floyds. Zombie Ice. Undead pale ale. All right. So there's two Surlys and a 3 Floyds 'cause- 8.5...
• 11:44
I'm doing the one man mosh pit. Yeah. The day of- Got a logic bomb, so-... the day of the zombie was pre-gamed with zombie dust. Yeah. You didn't, uh, really get deeply into that beer at all. [burps] Oh my God, no.
• 12:00
So, uh, yeah- So-... it's-... good Lord. You cannot- Wow, you've, you've molested the heck out of that, dude. Yeah. You need a, you need an opener. There's a rag or a towel over there. Where's that?
• 12:11
There's tools in the other room too. Tony, yeah, Tony towel thing. That'll, that'll take care of that a little bit It's a pipe? Well, it's a handlebar end. Ah, there you go. Hey, drink up, Peter.
• 12:22
Cut your finger o- Oh, geez, he's gonna have to go to the hospital after that finger. Ah! [laughs] It's bleeding everywhere, Pete. Oh. I, I don't, I don't think blood's supposed to spurt like that out of there.
• 12:31
Ah, I've got enough scar tissue, it ain't going through anywhere. [laughs] Good on ya, mate. [laughs] So yeah, so I d- you know, the, it's good beer. I don't know that we have to- Mm...
• 12:41
get into it, but, uh- Ooh, it's a little pointy. Yeah. [laughs] Learn how to open your can, sir. Now his limb's bleeding too. Hey, I, I'm... Shit, dude, all I did was do this and it didn't wanna pop it open.
• 12:54
Well, you're good now. So- As long as you can get the liquid out of there... the beer is delicious. Uh, the can, hmm, not so much. Not so much. So I'm trying to get... Uh, there's an event coming up on May 6th.
• 13:08
I don't know, May Day's May 5th, right? I don't know. May Day is May 1st- Oh, May 1st... technically. [laughs] Yeah. Is it? Yeah, it's always May 1st. Star Wars Day is May 4th. May Day.
• 13:17
And then- Uh, may the force be with you. Well, this is in- Oh, you're right, River West 24 registration is the Saturday after May Day... which this would be m- may the Sith be with you or something.
• 13:28
[laughs] Right, Revenge of the 5th. Remember the, Revenge of the 5th? Well, uh- All right... so this is actually the 6th in Osage, Iowa, which is just about an hour west of Decorah, and it is a clunker/
• 13:43
go to the beer bar place ride. But I think Spinner and Chewy and Kayla and Lunz, hopefully, and a few other folks are gonna get together and try and do this thing, so I have to ride my clunker around a little bit.
• 14:00
After it threw me on the ground, I'm a little, [laughs] a little gun shy on that thing. Yeah. Dude, it threw you on the ground because you rode it the totally wrong time. Well, whatever.
• 14:08
Do not blame the clunker, blame the, the player. The, the pilot. [laughs] Well, and the- But it looks like a lot of fun... and the terrain. Guess what? You're not gonna have sheets of ice in May. Well- You won't...
• 14:19
you would think you won't... you won't. We've had snow in May in Wisconsin. You won't. Snow may- Mr. Potato Head, Mr. Potato Head- Snow may... we will not have [laughs] ice in May.
• 14:29
May snow is, uh- We've had, we've had May snow in the past. Yes, we have. I know. I know that March is the new December, so you know. But yeah, hopefully there will be no snow on May the 6th in Osage, Iowa.
• 14:42
But if you're of a m- mind, you might consider going to that event and s- [laughs] I'm s- I'm sure we can ruin that town. It's not that big. [laughs] It's smaller than Decorah, for sure. Spread the suave.
• 14:53
Yeah, you know, let's, let's make sure that they know what Wisconsin's about over there in Iowa. Oh, they'll recognize. I'll have a, a, a, a flyer thingy in the show notes, but also, uh,
• 15:07
we're trying to get the, the, Dan, the organizer, on the show, and I think within the next week or two we should be able to make that happen somehow. Uh, I don't know what else is coming up, really.
• 15:20
Most of my other stuff is in June, Bike Week, and then July, River West 24. I- [laughs] I put in the notes about the, and I, and I, I've, I've... Since I put in the notes, I thought about it, but
• 15:32
Selle Anatomica sells the rubber version of their seat. Yeah, the R, R2. I think it's a, I, I- G2... I found it quite interesting until I realized- Deep boob... rubber gets really hot in the sun.
• 15:46
I s- We've sold a few of them, and I don't have a really good report back on them, but I f- the, the number one thing about them is all the other leather Selle Anatomicas, you can't leave them out in the rain at all.
• 15:58
  No, I know.
• 15:59
And, you know, so if it, if it's an all-season or, uh, if it's a commuter bike or something that you're just, you have to leave outside, you either gotta get a baggie or a rain cover or whatever for your leather- Right.
• 16:11
Well, you know, I know... Selle Anatomica. Bread bags, baby. Bread bags. Yeah, that's what happens. Bread bags. They're, they're not just for feet anymore. [laughs] Right. No, newspaper bags. It'll cover.
• 16:20
Got the bread bags for my feet. I don't want bread. I'm [laughs] gluten-free. Man, I'm just gonna say it again. This is good beer right here. [laughs] All right. Right. Which one is that?
• 16:29
This is the, uh- Oh, the mosh pit? Surly Hazy... Selle I, I, one man mosh pit. Yeah. I am mosh pitting over here by myself. Oi, oi, oi. Yeah. As long as you're not hitting us, you do what you gotta do.
• 16:42
Oh, speaking of Daikaiju, I [clears throat]... There was... Last time at X-Ray, there was a, uh, there was a young gentleman who was loving the mosh pit a little- Too much... too much and- And-...
• 16:58
didn't really know the- Etiquette of mosh pitting?... etiquette whatsoever. I don't think the young people know. And he got, he got like little bounce around and whatever, you know?
• 17:06
C- I mean, 'cause essentially you're doing derby, you know? Right, right. Like contain, contain- Right... contain. Right. And motherfucker bo- [laughs] bumped into me
• 17:16
more than a couple times, and he was just being a dick in the whatever. In the pit. Oh, man. So when he did come over, [laughs] I remember just grabbing him by the collar in one of those, like when you pull and you can
• 17:31
hear and feel that you have torn the fabric. [laughs] Just like, "Fucking be cool, dude," and push back in. And then he just spins back around like, "What?" And then you get caught in a whirlpool of shit.
• 17:43
[laughs] I was like, "Yes, this is how you, this is how you-" That guy sure is. This is the old, this is like the old man version of the mosh pit. Right. You don't have to get in the pit.
• 17:51
You just have to fuck with people as they bounce into you. Well, you just be on the edge. [laughs] This is the April 20th- I, I, I more contain, I contain the mosh pit at this point on the edge. Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 18:00
Just get people back into the middle where they belong and try not to get stepped on by big, big boots of terror. Yeah, you gotta read the pit. Yeah. You gotta completely read the pit. Right, right. Read the pit.
• 18:10
And then Ziegel comes in from the side. [laughs] Goes all the way through it. Again, it's, yeah- Der- derby-esque. It is very derby-esque. Well, yeah. I gotta say, it is.
• 18:19
It's pretty funny that way So yeah, 4/20 for we got a, we got a 4/20 date with Dai Kaju Yeah, it's gonna be a good show. Yep. Be a good show. So my, my 20% of the arrival of potential party crashers did not occur.
• 18:37
[laughs] What? Cool. The, uh- Oh, oh, oh, oh. We had a, we had a- [laughs] The Lloyd and the, uh- Yeah, yeah... we had a category one Lloyd sighting and- T and T...
• 18:48
[clears throat] that could've been a, could've been a thing. And Martin from Soup. Sup. Sup Design. Design. Soup Design. Uh, it would be- Oh, wait. I didn't know that was Martin. Okay, I know that dude. Yeah.
• 19:00
It would be good to have, uh, both of them on the show. Maybe not simultaneously perhaps, but, uh- [laughs] Or at the same time...
• 19:06
Lloyd, Lloyd is, he just was doing a magazine shoot somewhere for something- Yeah, yeah... down at the beach... for the, uh, beach ambassador stuff. Yeah, beach.
• 19:13
Yeah, he's the beach, the beach ambassador down there at the Wisconsin- Good for him... Milwaukee lakefront-y thing. And I don't know what the shoot was exactly about, but it was at Bradford, so. Yeah, yeah.
• 19:25
I'm going to push some buttons. You talk amongst yourselves. [laughs] Is it, like, shirtless Lloyd, or- I... That is a very good question. Yeah. I'm not sure. Is that what they're looking for? I
• 19:38
don't know if I wanna- Er... I don't know if I wanna... I wasn't at this photo shoot, so. It's a beach ambassador, uh, ca- uh, calendar. Is he... Yeah, is it a calendar? [laughs] For next holiday season.
• 19:47
[laughs] Uh, well, one of the things about Lloyd is that he doesn't own a car, and he rides his bike everywhere. Oh.
• 19:54
I'm surprised that his bike lives as long as it lives, because he puts a lot on- I'm also very happy he rides his bike everywhere, but- Rides a lot of miles. What's he currently got? Some... It's an Orange thing.
• 20:03
Uh, specialized. Yeah, an Orange specialized. He's had forever. Is it a, is it a Specialised? Yeah. Yep. He had a Kona for a while, you know. Yeah, he's had some decent bikes because- Oh, yeah.
• 20:12
I had a Ridis- Well- I had a Ridis Kona because it got... Yeah, that one got stolen, I think. But then recovered, heh. [blows raspberry] Oh, you dirty human. [laughs] Somebody st- Whoa, come on, son. That wasn't... Yeah.
• 20:29
[laughs] You m- [laughs] Ooh, your fumes are making me turn into Jerry Reed. [laughs] Ooh, the vapors. The vapors. Ah. How do you say? Hmm.
• 20:39
[laughs] I was gonna say, oh, uh, Lloyd was looking at the, the Wu-Tang, uh, coaster bike. I go- Yeah... "I don't think that bike's for you. I'm not sure it can handle the Lloyd and all the Lloyd has to offer."
• 20:52
Well, no, that would be a different riding style Lloyd than- Well, he'd have to be- Yeah, he, he- Even, even Lloyd is- It would be dead Lloyd... yeah, he'd have to be on the super mellow style. Oh, yeah.
• 21:01
He would have to, you know- Which is never. How did... How's this thing work? I'm, I'm moving my arrow. I'm moving my arrow to the green talk button. Hey, welcome to the radio program. Caller, who do we have on the line?
• 21:14
This is Mark Peterson from Ogden, Utah. How are you guys doing today? Oh, boy. Oh. Really? Wow, Mark has- Ogden, Utah... I didn't know you had a radio voice, 'cause it's coming across very s- Amazing...
• 21:24
very sultry and wonderful. Really? Smoky. Oh, yeah, today anyway. Smoky. We have a good connection for some reason- That sounds wonderful... all the way from Utah. How are you, man? Oh, yeah. Fantastic.
• 21:35
How are you guys doing? You guys getting any snow? No. I think we're not quite done with snow, but we didn't get any this week. I think we're done with the measurables. We're, we're above 40. Really? Well, you got...
• 21:47
Did you just get a bunch of snow? Oh, we're getting dumped on as we speak. Oh, sure. Oh, nice. Yeah, I, I was read... Is the atmospheric river over s- the Great Salt Lake at this point?
• 21:58
[laughs] Yeah, something along those lines, I think. Uh, it is, it's a lot of snow, but I'm, I'm all in. I love it. Absolutely. De- define a lot of snow for us, please. Well, um,
• 22:12
normally we don't see any snow around these parts in the winter. Um, we will get one or two or three inches, and it'll hang out for a day, and then it'll melt away.
• 22:23
But lately we've been getting four, five, six inches of snow- Nice... on, on the regular, and it's covering my lawn, and I haven't seen my lawn for, like, three months. So I'm still doing that. Nice. Wow.
• 22:39
So I mean, real snow to happens not far away from you up in the hills, correct? Mountains. Absolutely. Absolutely. There's actually- The Wasatch up there in the Wasatch Range.
• 22:50
Well, they're getting huge amounts of snow right now up there. So what kind of PSI are you running then considering you're riding fatty? Um, I, I would say probably about nine. Nice. Nice. Nine. The nine. Nine times.
• 23:06
Nine pounds. Nine. Nine times. H- uh, so, uh- [laughs] Mr. Dave Schlabowski stopped through Milwaukee last week and picked up a piece of gear to try some video stuff with from me.
• 23:20
But then today he's like, "I, I'm not calling in today." I'm like, "I didn't know you were." But then he did say, "Could you ask Mr. Mark Peterson a question?"
• 23:27
And I said, "Well, yes, 'cause he's calling in today," and by cracky, here you are. Um, so there was a... I think this particular story was NPR
• 23:38
bound, but it's climate change and a population boom could dry up the Great Salt Lake in five years. What do you think of that? [laughs] Uh, I think they're jumping the gun a little bit.
• 23:50
I think that, like, people get excited about kinda sensational, you know, headlines and- Of course. Absolutely... they get all excited and stuff. But I, I, I, you never know.
• 24:03
I mean, I guess it's not impossible, but I don't see it happening. Like, totally dried up I don't see it happening either, but, you know, it's definitely been- Yeah... shrinking for the last, what, 50 years or something.
• 24:16
Oh, yeah. It's not like- Absolutely... it's not like- I mean, well, that's, that's just more places to ride your... or, uh, to drive a car at huge amount of speed.
• 24:25
So I, you know I've been out there a bunch of times what with the family being out from there at one point in the past. Uh, and I was at- Yeah...
• 24:33
I went out to the Bonneville Salt Flats in my minivan, it was awesome, to see how fast my minivan would go. All right. Which by the way was 108. I don't know if it...
• 24:41
It wouldn't go any faster, but I also wanted to fly my- Cool...
• 24:44
model RC airplane out there in the middle of, you know, the desert, but it was just a little bit damp, little bit wet salt, and when I got back off the salt flats onto the highway, I noticed there was about, I don't know, three inches of salt packed underneath the vehicle, 'cause it was s- you know, wet- [laughs]...
• 25:03
and kinda sticky. So I went over there to Wendover to a U Wash It place and tried to get it off, but that, that van rusted really badly, and I, I blame it on that one- Yeah...
• 25:14
trip on the lake, because I don't think I ever got all- I, I agree... of that that got packed [laughs] on there out of there. Out of it. [laughs] Yeah. I must concur, sir. I, I, I agree. That's what, that's what did it.
• 25:25
[laughs] Without doubt. Do you guys ride, uh, bikes on the salt flats, or the, on the, the salt r- rim of the lake around the edge of the water? No, no.
• 25:36
Um, I, I, I'm, I'm sure a couple people have, or do occasionally, but by no means is it like an attraction or a trail that you're like, "Yeah, let's go do this."
• 25:48
Um, I've always wanted to go do some kind of exploratory stuff. There's, um, a, a gentleman, um, down south in, in Utah that, uh, is it Daniel Burton? I think that is his name.
• 26:02
Um, he's one of the guys that was one of the first or second to try to get to the center of Antarctica or something like that on a fat bike. Um- Yeah, it sounds familiar. Yeah, yeah.
• 26:13
Anyhow, he, he lives down on Salt Lake, and he used to, he would ride across, um, you know, um, Utah Lake when it was frozen in the middle of winter, and it would seem like he would be the kinda dude that would go out and explore around the outsides, the, the perimeters of the Great Salt Lake.
• 26:29
But it's just so, it's so inaccessible on so many different levels, and if you get out there and you get stuck, you're in, you're in deep shit. [laughs] Yeah.
• 26:39
There's a lotta military presence in various spots around the lake too, so I would think that would make it somewhat less than hospitable for normal humans. Yeah, yeah.
• 26:50
Yeah, I guess there would be some of that, but I, I'm not familiar with a whole bunch of that. But yeah, so- Well, you- You guys, you guys aren't getting just slammed with snow out there? Or- No...
• 26:59
what's going on out there? Zero, dude. No, you get the snow. It's- Zero... it's all gone by the time it gets here... it's, it's above 40 right now- But Bill, I thought you guys were supposed to get winter...
• 27:07
and anything we're getting is rain. It sucks. Oh, man. Yeah. It sucks. [laughs] Well- We're having no fun...
• 27:14
okay, so we'd, March w- like March is the new December we were talking about earlier, and we're only about two inches of snow less than our seasonal average, which is in the 45- Where's it coming, pins? Yeah.
• 27:27
It just, it's, it hasn't really- It's bullshit... done what it would normally do. You gotta go a good two to three hours- Hm...
• 27:34
north of where we are up into the Northern Wisconsin area to get- Where they're getting real-... significant snow that stays, and they can groom it for fat biking- Yeah...
• 27:42
or whatever, uh, whatever winter sport is your thing. Uh, you might, you might even wanna do, like, Busch Light curling perhaps. I don't know. Right, right. Last week's- Ooh... salon chair. Sounds like fun.
• 27:54
Yeah, 30, 30 packs of Busch Light with a wooden handle lashed to the top with, like, strapping tape or something. [laughs] They use them as- Che- check out, uh, check out- [laughs]...
• 28:03
last week's episode, and the- This is a Minnesota thing, though. Don't blame Wisconsin on this one... the Minnesota, it, this is entertaining. I listened to it this week. It's very entertaining. Tuesday morning?
• 28:14
Uh, of course. [laughs] During Dr. Seuss's- How did you know? Oh, I don't know. [laughs] Uh, Mark, how's, how's things at Pronghorn? How's the, how's the shop doing? [coughs] Oh, man.
• 28:24
Um, just this last Saturday we had our grand opening. Um, until recently I didn't realize that there was a soft opening, a hard opening, and a grand opening when you open a shop. [laughs] Fair enough, yeah.
• 28:36
Um, these are a, a variety- A classic opening, yeah... of openings, but [laughs] right? I, I'm wondering which kind of opening we're doing next.
• 28:43
[laughs] But we just recently had our grand opening, and, uh, we gave away several bicycles, and we had raffles, and we did a great big spinning wheel, and, uh, we raised a whole bunch of money for the local, um, high school Scholastic mountain biking.
• 29:00
Um, uh, I, I don't know whether you call them groups or clubs or something- Gangs... along those lines. Um- Gangs. Yeah. It's like the, the NICA. Yeah, yeah. You got a NICA team there for the- Yeah. Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
• 29:15
It, just like that, all, all kinds of teams, and we ended up raising a bunch of money and had about probably, probably there was 300, 350 people that came through the shop the other day. And, but that was fantastic.
• 29:27
Nice. Nice. Yeah, it sounds good. That's a problem with bike shops. Sometimes people wanna come to them. I know. I hate that when that happens. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. They wanna buy shit and stuff.
• 29:36
Well, it, it was so cool. It, it's such a cool feeling to see something, like, actually that the community really wants.
• 29:42
That's what people kept echoing over and over and over again, was that, "Finally, there is a shop close to us, we, where we don't have to drive a half hour or 45 minutes to go get our bikes taken care of."
• 29:55
And that's really cool. Yeah. Yeah.
• 29:58
I d- I don't know the lay of the land on the, on the bike shops out your direction, but you've got a hu- it's a long ways from Bountiful down to, uh, whatever on the south end of the, of the valley there, isn't it?
• 30:11
Yeah, yeah. I, I mean, i- it's absolutely a half hour to, uh, the next bike shop. Oh, right on. There you go. Well, that's- You know what I mean?... that's what you want.
• 30:19
We're, we're dumb enough to put a bike shop where there- Yeah, and there's like- In the middle of, like, 18 others... there's all these- Yeah... housing developments, all these houses going up...
• 30:23
we're, like, we're like two miles away from I don't know how many [laughs] bike shops. Yeah Are they, uh... Well, the, so this goes back to that population boom out there.
• 30:32
Uh, is it, uh, is it mostly people from California, or are they coming from everywhere? Oh, geez. I have no idea. I'm gonna have to go out and sample a, a couple people and ask them- And then-...
• 30:42
exactly where the hell are you from? "Hey, are you from California? Go back home. We don't want you here." [laughs] There, come on now. There, there. You're raising our, you're raising our property values too much.
• 30:54
I, I, I, it's, it's really kinda cool, because, um, Utah and Ogden and this area, um, the cost of living is apparently way lower than in other places, and the, the r- uh, wages are much higher.
• 31:08
So you come here, you get lower cost housing, you get higher wages, and you get cooler location, so win, win, win. Win, win, win. So- Yeah... I guess that's why.
• 31:18
Well, we just, we started working with a place that's in, I don't know what little... It's not in Draper. I don't...
• 31:24
It's somewhere in, it's somewhere in the valley there somewhere, uh, that's called electrifybike.com to do- Yeah, very juicy...
• 31:32
they're a C- they're the CYC distributor for a really cool e-bike motor, and they've been very friendly.
• 31:39
Um, and I've been very happy to work with them on the several kits we've ordered recently, so that's somewhere south of you. I just don't know exactly where. Yeah, yeah, good picks in Utah, all of them. All of them.
• 31:53
Right on. Uh, what do you got? Do you guys- So I, I, I got a question for you guys. Uh, I, I got into something recently, and I don't know whether you guys are into it or not, but have you heard of bike polo?
• 32:06
[laughs] Yes. Like, where you ride around- Yeah, we-... and play polo on bikes? We, we got lots of bike polo in Milwaukee... yeah, we actually have a, a city park- I, yeah... that has a really good bike polo area.
• 32:16
Um, and it's been- Yeah... it's been ba- it's been big here for 15- Yeah, they're, we competed-... maybe 20 years even... in the nationals actually. Yeah. Yeah, there's a pretty good group of them in our area.
• 32:26
Yeah, I figured, I figured you guys were, like, old school and stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but I'm just getting into it, and I am so stoked on this idea of riding around on a bike and hitting a ball with a mallet.
• 32:37
[laughs] I, I, I agree 100%. It, it- I, I saw you guys were building some bikes to do it. I saw your test mallet, and you're whacking the water bottle or whatever you're wa- whacking around. Yep, yep, yep.
• 32:47
Um, one, one thing I noticed about- That was me, that was me being a dingleberry...
• 32:50
[laughs] one thing I noticed about the people who are really good and also, uh, w- don't wanna crash a bunch is they use either a cover or some kinda disc front wheel so you can't stick the mallet in there and- Yeah...
• 33:02
flip the guy over the handlebars. [laughs] Yeah, yeah. Yep. Yep, yep. That, that's what I do. Cardboard works. Are you, are you riding a s- It's gonna happen. It's gonna happen... endo justice...
• 33:10
are you riding a single speed or a fixed gear? Or are you riding fixed? Yeah, single speed, single speed. Um, but it's not fixie.
• 33:17
I've, uh, I've been watching a lot of polo matches and just kinda been getting into it, and I am amazed at the skill set these guys have, how they can get up on, on the front wheel, up with one hand on the bars, y- hitting the brakes, going into an endo, and then do a, kind of a pirouette around, and then up on the rear tire and using the cranks, you know, as, you know, bre- 'cause you don't have- Brakes...
• 33:42
any brakes in the back, and then be able to do a 180-degree turn in nothing flat with one hand on the bars. Just amazing. Yeah, f- fixie people are a different breed. I think maybe that's like skateboarding.
• 33:52
You wanna learn that when you're really young so that you don't- Trust me... you, you don't get that hurt when you break your shit all up for- Trust me... about the first five years of when you do it. [laughs] Trust me.
• 34:03
Oh, I guess my timing's all fucked up. You can still whack water bottles. It's not a big deal. I, you know, we d- we do, uh- Oh, hell yeah. Oh... it's like I love hitting stuff.
• 34:12
W- A, you got a beer can on the road in front of you, it's all flattened from a car, and you try- You gotta get hit...
• 34:16
and you try and hit it with your back wheel so you skid on that little tiny thing so you got your good control of your brakes. Be good that, too. Be good that. Or you- Yeah, yeah...
• 34:23
you might have a beer can or a water bottle that's, you know, kind of still new, and you just flick it with your front wheel into your buddy who's riding next to you and try and hit him with it.
• 34:31
Right, right, right, right. There's a lot of good, there's a lot of good games you can do just on a normal group ride. It's true. Hey, speaking of beer, what are you guys drinking tonight?
• 34:39
Uh, tonight is a- A mixed bag... we, we, we cleaned the fridge- Leftovers... our leftover beer night today.
• 34:45
[laughs] I got Zombie Ice at 8 point- Don't you guys have, like, connoisseur beers and shit normally at your shop? Eh, no. Yeah, yeah, of course. Or even, like, craft beers? I don't know connoisseur.
• 34:53
Uh, yeah, we just like to drink beer. More like kinda sewer. Kinda sewer. Uh, today, I'm clever. Well, today, uh, my, I'm drinking Surly's, uh, uh, One Man Mosh Pit Hazy IPA, which is really tasty. Yes.
• 35:06
And I'm doing the Surly Logic Bomb, which is a juicy pale ale. Yeah. What are you getting? What are you- And, and I get to drink It's Not Normal- Well, well, I'm going with more of a... Go ahead. Go ahead. Go ahead.
• 35:18
Uh, I'm drinking It's Not Normal Three Floyds Zombie Ice at 8.4. Oh, yeah. Oh, man. That, yeah. Oh, yeah. That's a kneecapper. That's bad. That's bad. [laughs] And you? He's a big boy.
• 35:28
So, um, I, I, I went all out and went and got me some Busch. Mm. Ooh. [laughs] Light? Well, we do have, we do have the Fluffer beer, which is always Ham's here, so. Yeah.
• 35:40
[laughs] That's, that's the one you wanna get when you're- With Busch- Yeah... yeah, you're, you're down there. Yeah, for sure. It's- And it, it's, it's like water- Right... mm-hmm. It is... with a little alcohol in it.
• 35:50
Well, it's- It's actually safe water... yeah, if you're going to Mexico, you would drink it. I mean, well- Don't drink the water... Beer Saved the World, if you've watched that documentary, is
• 36:00
the fact that the Egyptians left water out that accidentally got fermented because it had rice in it, and- Yeah... lo and behold, no one got sick. Yep. So yeah, it, it, Beer Saved the World, and- Yeah...
• 36:13
Busch is probably as close to that as you're gonna get. So, so how does it work in Utah now? Is it- Amen... is it still 3.2 beer out there, or d- can you actually get a real good beer now?
• 36:23
No, you can get a real good beer now. Um, uh, w- the deal is, is if you're gonna buy it at a gas station, it's gonna be 3.2. If you're gonna go anything higher, it's gotta come from the liquor store.
• 36:32
It's kinda fucked up, but that's the way it is. Like a- California... yeah, they have state liquor stores, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's simple. Yeah, yeah.
• 36:37
I rem- I remember going to a, to a bar, I, I don't, it might've been in the hotel we were staying in, but- Bar...
• 36:43
you had to, you had to p- Be a member, so you had to pay, like, five bucks for that day to be a member of it, and then if you wanted, like, a double rum and coke or something, they would only put one shot in, and they would put another shot next to it, and you had to pour your own shot- Yeah, sidecar...
• 36:57
into your, your own drink. Sidecar. And like... Yeah, a sidecar. Uh, that, uh, s- well, I g- [laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah...
• 37:02
I mean, I don't know, I guess there's a way to skate around anything, but that's how- [clears throat]... they skated around it in that particular situation. That's pretty funny. Yeah, yeah, people are weird.
• 37:12
Life's weird. Ah. All right, Mark. Yeah, it is super weird, super weird. So I, I wanted to share with you guys, just, like, really quickly, um, I had something that, like, kinda melted my heart recently.
• 37:25
Um, about five or six years ago in 2019, um, I had hit a hard patch and I had to sell one of my bikes, and it was my first generation Rat Fink. And, uh, it's an Electra Rat Fink, kind of a chopper-type bike.
• 37:40
And, um, I loved this bike, and I didn't wanna sell it, but it was the only one that I had that had any kind of resell marketable value.
• 37:48
And a gentleman from Texas who is a Facebook friend, um, he, he bought this bike from me, and said he was gonna come, come pick it up from me, like, later on in the summer, like four or five months later.
• 38:01
And he sent me $500 for it, made it so I could pay my rent that month. Nice.
• 38:07
So later in the year he comes out, and I get to meet him and his, his girlfriend, and we go on mountain bike rides, and they, they take this bike away, you know?
• 38:15
And, um, he says, "I- if, if I can, I'll be up here next year and I'll sell it back to you for what, what I bought it for." And I was like, "Right on. Thank you, dude," 'cause I really didn't wanna sell it.
• 38:26
It was part of my soul. Nice. [laughs] Nice. Yeah. And, um, f- four, four years go by where there's hard times, and I just can't. He's coming up every summer, he comes up, but I, I c- I can't buy it back.
• 38:38
Um, just recently, after, like, the night that we talked on the show most, most recently, I believe- A couple weeks ago, yeah, yeah... the night before that. Um, yeah, yeah. Um, the last time I was on the show, um,
• 38:53
I went into work at Pronghorn, and there was a box for me. My buddies were grinning ear to ear, and they were, like, pointing at it. I was like, "Okay, yeah, what the fuck? Are we... Is this a build?
• 39:04
Is this something I'm building up that's coming from the management?" They're like, "No, look at the name on the address." And it was, like, addressed to me. And I was like, "What? What?" [laughs] This dude
• 39:16
sent me back my bike from Texas, and I... Do you know how much it is to ship a bike? Yes. [laughs] Very expensive these days. [laughs] Yeah. So he shipped me back a fully bubble-wrapped, individually pieced-out Rat Fink
• 39:34
with a note that says... Oh, wait, it's sitting right here in front of me. Nice. "Hey man, wanted to send you the Rat Fink back so you could enjoy it.
• 39:43
I added, uh, I added a bell, but kept the chain guard for the wall of my shop." [laughs] "My condition is never part with it again. Enjoy, my brother. Peace and love, Rusty." Nice.
• 39:56
Dude, that's, that's just classic goodness right there. That is... Yep, yep. It's like, like a $800 gift out of the blue from the bicycle gods that continue to kiss me on the head every night.
• 40:10
[laughs] They give you a job. And it's not a good-looking head, dude. [laughs] Oh, you haven't- I've seen that head... come on, haven't you seen how handsome he was when he was doing videos for us- Yeah, I'm-...
• 40:19
back in the olden days? Of course I have. [laughs] Oh, he, he is such a handsome... That's- Oh, I don't know about that shit, but- [laughs]... my weight's only fluctuated by about- Just giving you grief, dude...
• 40:28
400 pounds in, in between then and now, but- Yeah, man That's so exciting... well, I just thought that it, it is cool to know that there are people out there that do good shit. Right. That you, do... You know?
• 40:40
I wanna be that dude. You will be. You are, actually, in a way, because you inspire people, and especially... I'm not a... You're a Facebook god. I...
• 40:51
You just are so giving of yourself, and, and, uh, you put yourself out there, and I'm, I'm too chicken to put myself out there on Facebook. I'm an asshole. But, yeah, I'm an asshole, right? I'm an asshole on Facebook.
• 41:02
Oh, I'm an asshole. [laughs] [laughs] But- I just shoot pictures- No, I like, I like that... of the lake in the morning. Yeah, yeah. [laughs] JK does one thing, and he does it well.
• 41:10
[laughs] Takes pictures of our hopefully receding slightly lake shoreline. So we can start riding out again. It's either that or something, "Hey, this came out this day 35 years ago."
• 41:21
[laughs] Well, actually, yes, of this recording- When we were kids... it was, uh, Head Like a Hole by, uh, uh- [laughs]... Nine Inch Nails came out today. Oh, well, there, there you go. So.
• 41:30
Well, that is a s- [laughs] I mean, I'm stoked. There we go. [laughs] That, that's an awesome story. I, I, I can't- It is a fantastic story... it's like it was destined to come back to you apparently, because it did.
• 41:39
Uh, apparently. The karmic- I mean, it, it is... Yeah, I d- I've got enough bikes. I, I promise you, I have- [laughs]... enough bikes. I didn't need any more.
• 41:52
But this is the one that when it came back I am, was, like, I, I had to, like, stop myself from crying in front of my bros, you know? [laughs] I mean, not that I... Who cares if I c- Right...
• 42:04
cry a little bit when someone sends that kind of thing back to you? Oh, I cried. But it, it was, it was very- Just squirt one out there. Squirt a tear a little bit... s- sentimental, you know? Yeah. For real.
• 42:14
And, and, and, uh, I hope that you guys think about the people that are around you, your friends, y- y- y- the guys that you hang out with- I hate those guys...
• 42:23
people that listen to this- Yeah, they're all assholes anyway... you know, podcast. Yeah. You know? We're family, man. We need to care for each other, take care of each other, love each other, love on each other way big.
• 42:35
Get your ass up here so we can love on you. Yeah, we got... You sh- you sh- we can come out there, but you know I've been out there. You should come here someday. Yeah, yeah. We'll love on you. We'll love on you.
• 42:44
Well, I'm, I'm hoping so. I'm hoping so. I, things are looking good along those lines. Cool. Let's just leave it there. Yeah. All right, Mark. Well, awesome that you could call in tonight. Uh, you're welcome anytime.
• 42:54
Uh, and we'll- Yeah... hopefully catch up with you in not too distant future. Yeah. Thank you for having me again. Uh, come on out to Pronghorn Cycles in Syracuse, Utah, 2432 West 1700 South in Ogden...
• 43:10
or in Syracuse, Utah. Come out and say hi to me, and say hi to the rest of the family. Right on, man. Cool. All right. Okay. Love you guys. Peace. Have a great night. Thanks, Mark. Love you too. Peace. Bye. Bye. Peace.
• 43:22
There we did it. Hey, everybody. That's Mark Peterson right there. Out there from, uh, well, Ogden for him, but Syracuse for Pronghorn, so. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's an awesome... He is an awesome dude. I, I mean, I've...
• 43:35
Not just a Facebook buddy, but we've hung out- He's a, he's a cool dude... several times, and he was very, uh, welcoming when we were out there for a saddle drive and, and other times. So
• 43:46
if you're out that way, look up Mark at Pronghorn there in Syracuse. I think, by cracky, that- He did it again... he made our show again.
• 43:56
So we're gonna let you all go and, uh, get back to your laundry or your, uh, you know- Trailer Park Boys. Shove- Greasy Money. Shoving- If you play the game, check it out. I will have a question- Oh, yeah...
• 44:09
in the event... JK has a question in- Yeah... yeah. Greasy- Ricky's giving out more advice to you shit hawks. Comment your question and where you're from for a chance to see your name in the game, and I've been selected.
• 44:21
I haven't... I'll, I'll have to play just to see JK- Yeah... in a, an actual game you can download from Apple or Android stores. There, it's just a fun time killer. I got... I was into it for a couple years- Yeah...
• 44:33
and then I was just... I, I don't know when it sort of was like... Did I stop? Whatever. So the question, cheater, will be how do islands not float away? Islands. What are you saying? What are you doing? Islands.
