- 0:00Hey, this is Steven Brodsky from the band Cavin. We are super stoked
- 0:04to tour Australia for the first time with the Ocean and l L R R.
- 0:11So anyone who's planning on coming out to this thing, I'm stoked to
- 0:16see you. We're all stoked to see you and uh yeah, just a
- 0:20few months away now, so very exciting. Hey it is night. Thanks
- 0:24for joining us today, Thank you, thanks for having me. No,
- 0:29I think you should maybe check you calder a bit, Mike, because it's
- 0:33not a couple of months ago. It's only about less than three weeks.
- 0:37What April. It just starts on Jane's Jane. I again, I've got
- 0:43my night's written down here. Wrong, I've got April. But it's Jane,
- 0:46isn't it. You scared me a lot of singing need it is a
- 0:52heart attack. I'm talking during a marathon. I'm like, man, yeah
- 0:56right, And I'm like, I know that there's a date time difference over
- 0:59there. You're not losing a couple of months coming over. Well, now
- 1:06that I've just managed to ruin your morning. Australia with the Ocean in ll
- 1:11Rah in June for Runna shows studying in Brisbane on the fifth, then you
- 1:17go through Newcastle, Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, finishing Adelaide on the fifth
- 1:21geenth mate, So but what do you are you? Are you a light
- 1:23pack of might a you're going to leave to the last minute jam everything in
- 1:26or you got everything ready ready to go pretty much? Now? Oh oh
- 1:33we haven't even rehearsed as Caven started here. So yeah, there's no way
- 1:42in hell that I would also have my backpack for that. But it was
- 1:46a busy year last year, and I have to say I got pretty quick
- 1:52at doing a last minute pack. In fact, I kind of did one
- 1:55for this recent tour that I went on with my other band, Mutoyd Man.
- 1:59So you know, look, as long as you remember your passport everything
- 2:05else, even if you forget all your underwear, like you know, I'll
- 2:10just I'll just have some some new assy drawers to bring back home to the
- 2:14c As you mentioned it, it's gonna be your first ever tour of this
- 2:21country. So I guess the big question is why have you neglected us for
- 2:24so long? Oh that is a great question. Well, it will be
- 2:29my second time over there. Another band that I play in called Old Man
- 2:34Gloom tour there with Converge about ten years ago. Uh, but yeah,
- 2:39I do remember in my travels with Old Man Gloom and Converge, there are
- 2:44definitely some Caven fans like when you're gonna bring Caven over man, we've been
- 2:49waiting, And I mean that was ten years ago. So you know,
- 2:53sometimes it's just especially with like international tours for bands at our level, uh,
- 3:02to work out something where we're not like just breaking even or like eating
- 3:08it. It's just hard. Those offers don't come our way very often.
- 3:15So we're able to work something out for this one, and we're all very
- 3:21stoked on all the all the logistics and all the all the inner workings of
- 3:27of the offer itself, and it made sense and so yeah, finally doing
- 3:34it, you know, you know, the idea just had to marinate a
- 3:38little bit and really like this point, what about this time is ight?
- 3:45Is it? How are you remembering all the names of these bands that you're
- 3:46in, Like we're only two questions in and you already want ahead with bands,
- 3:53I have the hardest time keeping track, I really do. Yeah,
- 3:58don't even want to talk about scheduling or looking at a calendar like that just
- 4:04makes my eyes go across eyes sometimes, but yeah, you know, but
- 4:11also playing in different bands and kind of mixing it up with different people.
- 4:16It's good for the mind, I think, and you know, we don't
- 4:19get sick of each other as quickly, and like you said, you give
- 4:27into a strya before my but for the rest of the band as a whole,
- 4:30it's gonna be their first on tour and here, like you just do
- 4:32a bit of research on the place first, Like do you talk to people
- 4:35to be here before and ask what to expect or do you just come out
- 4:39of here and wing it and see what happens a little of both, Yeah,
- 4:45I might. You know, well, you've got to research like what
- 4:51the the temperature is going to be like and the weather, because last time
- 4:56I went it was I left, it was an the winter here, so
- 5:02it was like full blown summer in Australia and at the time I was really
- 5:09into watching Downton nabby remember that show. So everyone in down Nabbey is like
- 5:15rolling with these baller pajamas, and I was like, I'm going to get
- 5:20some baller pajamas. So I got these really nice like cotton pajamas, not
- 5:27just bottoms, but I got like button down top and I thought it was
- 5:32super cool with my new baller down nabby pajamas, and I packed those.
- 5:38And I get to Australia and it's like fucking you know, triple digit temperatures
- 5:44and I've got my pajamas on. I'm determined to wear them because I brought
- 5:47them all the way across the pond, you know. But I'm like sweating
- 5:51my ass off, and I'm like, all right, I just had to
- 5:56give up the pajamas. Unfortunately I gave. I gave them a shot,
- 6:00but it was like the probably the stupidest thing I could have packed for a
- 6:05trip, like hie for even trying, mate, that's not a bad effort.
- 6:13Oh and I got a lot of ship from my pajamas. It was.
- 6:15It was the subject of ridicule for the whole tour. I'm just glad
- 6:19he gave everybody something to make fun of. You know. That's the real
- 6:23raison that's made ten years, and it might because it's taking you that long
- 6:26to get over it. Yeah, I still feel the sting a little bit.
- 6:33So I'm getting some big question then there, rod is what can fans
- 6:36expect from Kaivan? Might say? And I haven't seen it here before.
- 6:41Uh not Pajamas, not the Cotton Ones anyway, No Downtown Abbeys. No,
- 6:48that's a great question. I mean I think you know, we we
- 6:56try to do unless it's like a special show, we try to do a
- 7:00pretty well rounded set. We try to represent something from all the different eras
- 7:06of the band. You know, we're like sort of this rock and roll
- 7:10chameleon and we've sort of changed colors and shed skin many times throughout our you
- 7:16know, thirty year I guess career as a band. And yeah, so
- 7:27it you know, really depends on how long we have to play. Like
- 7:30I don't even know what our set length is, so but well it's gonna
- 7:34be all killer, no filler. You know, we're only going to bring
- 7:38the best for our first time in Australia and definitely stuff from the new records.
- 7:44If you don't know Heavy Pendulum, you better start brushing up on that
- 7:46now. And yeah, we're just going to be thrilled to be somewhere new
- 7:55because you know, it's not too often that we get to go to like
- 8:00jit new places and we're all excited for that. Great I guess on the
- 8:05flip side of that, mate, it is like you guys don't really know
- 8:07what to expect from Australian fans, Like we're a bit of a different mob
- 8:11at you. Yeah, yes, I mean I got a taste of it
- 8:16with old Man Gloom ten years ago, but you know, with with Caven,
- 8:20I have no idea and that's that's pretty exciting too. Now you're coming
- 8:28down with the Ocean, who had been here before and label mates with an
- 8:31unpronounceable name l L L or R. So what what makes you three a
- 8:37good touring unit? I guess uh, you know, I think, uh,
- 8:46we've talked about doing stuff with The Ocean in the past, maybe once
- 8:50or twice. I seem to remember, like planning a possible UK run,
- 8:56maybe like twenty years ago or something. But yeah, I think sonically there's
- 9:03there's definitely some crossover. Uh, there's probably crossover with our fans too.
- 9:09I might be getting this wrong, and I'll feel really stupid if I am.
- 9:13But I believe I believe that Caleb Schofield, our former bass player in
- 9:24Cavan, who's unfortunately no longer with us. I believe that he did a
- 9:31guest spot, He did a guest vocal on one of their records. But
- 9:35I could be totally wrong. I could be thinking of another band. So
- 9:37but if I'm right, then there's another connection. You can bet your lot.
- 9:41There's probably thousands of internet trolls out there right now gone is he right?
- 9:46Is he right? Waiting to crucify me if I fuck up? Why
- 9:54throw cotton for jobs at you? When you hit the study bet? Talking
- 10:03about your latest album, which you mentioned came out before, Like, it
- 10:05came out in twenty twenty two, and the album was Heavy Pendulum. So
- 10:09that album that you put that out after being on a bit of a hiatus
- 10:13for a while, and you mentioned caleeb which is part of the reason why
- 10:16you came back. But that album combined elements of everything that you've done before.
- 10:20So they've done a bit of metalcor this and psychedelic sort of rock type
- 10:22thing. Like was that I guess was it a conscious effort to do that?
- 10:28Like? Was it signifying the rebirth of a band in some aspects by
- 10:31putting everything that you've done together before for one record. Yeah, there's probably
- 10:37some of that idea going on moving forward, getting into the whole sort of
- 10:43psyche of why we're doing the band, The fact that we can still do
- 10:50it, which is crazy. But a lot of it has to do with
- 10:54Nate Newton being able and willing to join the band and to be part of
- 11:01the creative process and to really throw himself into it. So yeah, all
- 11:07that plays into it. We also had done quite a bit of touring before
- 11:11we started writing the record, so like, you know, like I was
- 11:16saying earlier, like when we go out and play shows, unless it's something
- 11:20like a special show, we try to sort of pull from different areas of
- 11:26the band and represent it in our set. And so all that was like
- 11:30fresh in our minds when we started writing, Like we were very much in
- 11:33touch with like the best of you know, all the different eras of Caven
- 11:37and so you know, when it went into when we went into writing new
- 11:41stuff, it was easy to like draw up on our own influence, so
- 11:48to speak, like to rip ourselves off. You better put it that way.
- 11:56I mean, there's no better person to rip off than yourself. Really,
- 12:00that's equitt of the year, mate. I'm going to remember that one,
- 12:05all right, Steven. I'd love to keep chatting, mate, but
- 12:07our time together has come to an end of it. Cavin will be hitting
- 12:09Australia in June, not in April, so you can go back to bed
- 12:13for a bit and looking forward to seeing it made up hop along the Brisbane
- 12:16Show and Sila. Oh please do Chris, thanks for your time and we'll
- 12:22see you all very soon
