- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Tristan, the off season is over with, my friend.
- 0:55SPEAKER_08: Thank the Lord.
- 0:57SPEAKER_08: And if you're asking how I'm feeling right now, I am still battling the hangover that was your engagement party.
- 1:04SPEAKER_08: So please allow me to open up this episode with good vibes and congratulate you on your engagement with this wonderful woman that we've known for years and you've been dating for quite a while now.
- 1:15SPEAKER_08: Uh, nothing but love to both of you.
- 1:17SPEAKER_08: Couldn't be happier.
- 1:18SPEAKER_08: And I know our listeners are feeling the same way.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Thank you, my friend.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: Um, it was a great party.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, I I really appreciate everybody for coming out, for making it happen.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: My family, friends, I really, and and of course, to my beautiful fiancee, Kristen.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Thank you for saying yes.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, yeah, this is yeah, this is a great weekend.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: I'm glad I got to share it with you guys and uh and everybody.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: So I appreciate that.
- 1:42SPEAKER_08: Now we just need a season to follow that up with.
- 1:44SPEAKER_08: Let's let's ride this high because both the talking tech boys are officially off the market, and a whole zero women are heartbroken from it.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: So I was about to say, I don't, you know, I don't know if that's that's really a big surprise that we're both now locked down.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, all to all the ladies that love talking tech out there, we are off the market.
- 2:07SPEAKER_08: It was a very psychotic relationship from the start.
- 2:11SPEAKER_01: So let's move on because they don't want to hear any more about uh this whole nonsense.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Let's move to some sports, to some talking Texas Tech sports.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Let's talk soccer and volleyball to start off this episode.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: We are gonna have a bunch of stuff throughout this episode.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: It's loaded.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Obviously, the Houston game is coming up on Saturday, so we're gonna give you a preview for that game.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: We're gonna give you kind of a breakdown.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: I know we've been breaking down all of Texas Tech's positional groups throughout the offseason, but we're just gonna kind of give you a little abbreviated thing, uh, a little abbreviated short preview for Texas Tech football.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk some red raiders in the NFL, and we are gonna give you a schedule breakdown, kind of our thoughts on Texas Tech schedule, maybe some predictions, all that sort of good stuff.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: But let's start off by talking about some soccer and volleyball because we have sports that have already started here at Texas Tech.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, soccer went 2-0 uh in their last two games, a win against Hartford and a big time win against Abilene Christian.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: We killed the Wildcats.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Very sorry for that, ACU.
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: Very sorry to my sister Victoria, a noted alum of Abilene Christian.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Proud alum.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Proud alum, not really.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: She could care less about what goes on over there, but uh big time win, uh, two and oh on the week.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: You can't be sad about it.
- 3:34SPEAKER_08: We are two and oh against our West Texas rivals, these enormous foes stored against the the University of Texas Tech.
- 3:42SPEAKER_08: As I I'm a recruit saying that.
- 3:46SPEAKER_08: Um, I guess we just held it in the tank because we only beat Hartford by one.
- 3:51SPEAKER_08: We and then we tie a game against UC San Diego 1-1, and we beat UTEP by one, and then we're just like opening all guns onto Abilene Christian.
- 4:01SPEAKER_08: I I don't I understand like what turned on with our ladies to just absolutely destroy our friends in Abilene.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: I know star Kristen Davis was out for I think the Hartford game, so that probably had something to do with it, but I mean Abilene Christian, we just absolutely destroyed them.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, a 6-0 soccer score is just insane.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, it's big time for the soccer team.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Girls are getting off to a pretty good start.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: We have we haven't lost yet, we just have the one tie.
- 4:33SPEAKER_08: Let's see the spectacular defense that we've seen all four games translate to the gridiron.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: Yes, absolutely.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: So, up next for soccer, they have Cal State Fullerton coming up and UTSA, the hometown squad for us.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Um, that's gonna be big time.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, we get another two dubs on the board.
- 4:51SPEAKER_08: And we we can't return to San Antonio without getting that huge dub against the runners.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: We need to, you know, the runners always root for them, but not when they're playing Texas Tech.
- 5:01SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 5:02SPEAKER_08: So we love it, ladies.
- 5:04SPEAKER_08: Let's keep up the momentum because it's a great way to kick into this fall season.
- 5:08SPEAKER_08: It's I'm just excited to have sports back ready to catch them on ESPN Plus.
- 5:11SPEAKER_08: A lot of these are on ESPN Plus, y'all.
- 5:13SPEAKER_08: So uh pay the five bucks a month and and catch our catch our folks.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And you know what else is on ESPN Plus is volleyball.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: We started our volleyball season.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: We are three and one.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: We have played four games since our last recording.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, we have wins over East Tennessee State, NC State, and of course Abilene Christian.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, we are just beating the Wildcats and all sorts of stuff to start off the fall.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but we did lose to Tennessee.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: We lost to the Volunteers.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: So we are three and one, though.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Up next, we have the Red Raider Classic, where we play Texas State, Rhode Island, and the Ohio State University, the number six Ohio University.
- 5:53SPEAKER_08: Wow, wait, we got an ACU all over the place here.
- 5:56SPEAKER_08: Did it are we sure it's Stephen F.
- 5:57SPEAKER_08: Austin on the football schedule, or is is that the right purple team we're talking about here?
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Because it's a purple team, and we're gonna beat them.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: We're gonna beat them by a lot.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: So, you know, what's really the difference?
- 6:08SPEAKER_08: This this is good to see because our uh last season with the volleyball ladies, it was a little lackluster.
- 6:13SPEAKER_08: Um, it'll it it's it's a new transition here.
- 6:16SPEAKER_08: Um, so I'm excited to see how we rebound here at home, uh, especially against the Ohio State game.
- 6:21SPEAKER_08: Obviously, you want to top over Texas State because you obviously expect to win games like that.
- 6:25SPEAKER_08: Um, but number six, huge test.
- 6:28SPEAKER_08: Um, and uh we're one and one against power five.
- 6:31SPEAKER_08: I don't know if that really applies to volleyball, but let's let's go ahead and make that two and one.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: So go, ladies, in both of these sports.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: We're always rooting for you here on Talk and Tech.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: So we're giving y'all the shouts out, but let's also talk about some professional stuff because we have the NFL rosters that are finalized for right now, the 53-man roster after all the cuts of the offseason.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: And we have 14 red raiders in the NFL this season, uh, with some others that have potential to move up from practice squads and all sorts of stuff to get picked up throughout the season.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna run down a list of everybody that went to Texas Tech that is gonna be on an NFL roster.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Let's start with, of course, Cliff Kingsbury's Cardinals, Antoine Wesley, uh, the wide receiver, made the 53-man team for the Cardinals, and Cliff Broderick Washington, gonna be with the Ravens, Terrence Steele and TJ Vasher for the Cowboys.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: So TJ Vasher is a little weird of a of a story right now.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: He's on the reserveslash non-football injury list.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure what that means necessarily, but I know he was not waived or cut from the cowboys.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: So uh maybe we'll see TJ Vasher this season, maybe not.
- 7:44SPEAKER_01: Um, Dakota Allen with the Jaguars, of course.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: This uh this guy named Patrick Mahomes with the Chiefs, uh Sam Sam Aguovian Aguovoan.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure how to say it, but he's with the Dolphins.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Uh Jaem Grant, of course, made the 53-man roster for the Dolphins as well.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Cody Davis with the Patriots, uh, my boy Zach McPherson with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jordan Brooks with the Seahawks, Carrie Hyder with the Seahawks, Cam Batson with the Titans, and Dylan Cantrell.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: I think he's on on IR for the for the Washington football team.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure if he made the team or not, but he's hurt.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: He's on IR.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: I've seen different things.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: So, right now we have 14 Red Raiders on NFL rosters.
- 8:26SPEAKER_08: Catch your breath because man, you had to list them off.
- 8:30SPEAKER_08: That's what I love to hear, man.
- 8:32SPEAKER_08: That's that's excellent news.
- 8:34SPEAKER_08: Um, the only negative I heard is that Kiki Cootie, yeah, this hot talent out of Texas tech was recently cut from the Houston Texans.
- 8:45SPEAKER_08: I just I can't believe this because I no matter what, the only the only decision I would have liked to hear out of the Houston Texans is that he's ready to go in a starting position because otherwise, I don't that I don't think that organization knows how to make any sort of rational decision because that just seems unbelievable.
- 9:02SPEAKER_08: Because I thought that guy had a lot of potential in that organization.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, it's honestly a blessing to be cut from that dumpster fire of an organization at this point.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So uh he did get picked up by the Indianapolis Colts.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be on their practice squad this coming season.
- 9:17SPEAKER_01: So uh we'll see how that works out.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: Jack Anderson was also cut from the Bills uh as a seventh round pick, but he is hopefully going to be taken on to their practice squad.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: So injuries happen, guys get called up throughout the year.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's a seventh round pick.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: It's it's tough out there for these guys.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Uh Raven Clark was also cut from the Eagles, and our boy Davis Webb was cut from the Bills as well.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: So the Bills are really out to get Texas Tech these days.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, cutting two of our boys.
- 9:44SPEAKER_08: Wow, L'Raven Clark, that one's actually some real news.
- 9:47SPEAKER_08: That's that's that's really surprising because that guy's had a nice long career with the NFL lately.
- 9:52SPEAKER_08: Um, and I'm I'm not we're not trying to see a rag on the Houston Texans, it's just it's really surprising to hear that Kiki got cut because I just really thought that guy was a shining star to be.
- 10:01SPEAKER_08: Um, and I thought that was the trend.
- 10:04SPEAKER_08: So, but it's but other than that, man, you listed 14 guys that are out there, and I mean we would be remiss to just glaze over like you did.
- 10:14SPEAKER_08: Um, we recently in the new NFL top 100 rankings.
- 10:18SPEAKER_08: Your Texas Tech former quarterback, uh Patrick Mahomes is number one in the entire NFL.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: It wasn't Davis Webb.
- 10:29SPEAKER_08: We like our boy Davis Webb.
- 10:30SPEAKER_08: Does it, but does he fall more into the Cal category, especially now that he's cut?
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: When he gets cut, he's a former Cal player.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: When he's on a team, he's a former so is Baker Mayfield on that list then stop it.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: We're never gonna we're we're never gonna accept Baker Mayfield as one of ours.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: So he's not on the he's no, he doesn't count.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, but like you said, Patrick Moams does count, and he is the number one uh NFL player going into the season.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: I think that's voted on by all of the NFL players, so you know, take that for what it is.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: But uh it's big time.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Everybody knows Patrick Moams, what he is, what he's going to be.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, he's a he's a future Hall of Famer.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: So shouts out to him.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Good for him for being voted number one.
- 11:14SPEAKER_08: And and huge props to him lately.
- 11:15SPEAKER_08: He just opened up his uh his youth program in in Kansas City and he dedicated it to Luke Siegel.
- 11:21SPEAKER_08: Um, just I love how humble the young man is and how true to his roots he is.
- 11:27SPEAKER_08: He he's the most famous athlete in the country save LeBron James, and he's still as humble as he was from that boy out in East Texas, and it's just it makes you really proud to see as a red raider.
- 11:41SPEAKER_08: So huge props to him.
- 11:42SPEAKER_08: And um, it was really cool to see this like tweet that Fox tweeted out that um uh they they listed the top 10 players of the NFL, and there's only one five-star player, and that was Derrick Henry um out of college.
- 11:54SPEAKER_08: And yeah, the Patch Holmes is a three-star player, lost the three stars, and some not even ranked, and it just comes to show that a lot of these young men don't get the credit they deserve.
- 12:03SPEAKER_08: And Patrick Holmes is one of them.
- 12:05SPEAKER_08: And uh, we I'm just glad that we got that uncut gem.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was cool uh looking at that top 10 list because you only saw really two guys come from two blue blood programs in Alabama and Michigan.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, so everybody else came from, you know, you're you're mid-tier, you're Texas Techs of the World, and even below that.
- 12:25SPEAKER_01: So uh NFL guys, they can if you know, professional players, they can find success no matter where you came from.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: And Patrick Mahomes is is proof of that.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: So uh shouts out to him.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, that was really cool to see.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: But let's move on to Texas Tech.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: We're not going to talk NFL anymore, we're talking Texas Tech.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: We're gonna give you kind of a quick, short and sweet right before the season starts.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Football preview for you guys.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: We told you we would do that.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: So, Tristan, let's get this started.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Let's get this going.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Let's start with the quarterbacks.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Of course, we have our guys right there, Tyler Shuck, named QB1, Henry Columbi backing them up.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: We got a couple of young guys.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: How do you feel about this quarterback unit going forward with the season?
- 13:07SPEAKER_08: Gosh, I don't want to deja boo our last our episode this time last year, saying that we feel good about this QB room, but no, I really do feel really good about this QB room, especially at QB one.
- 13:20SPEAKER_08: Um, I think this this Tyler Schutt guy, he is a raw talent.
- 13:25SPEAKER_08: Um I think that the Sunday coming uh system will be good for him.
- 13:28SPEAKER_08: Uh, I really do hope he's gonna be stepping into the Patrick Mahomes legacy.
- 13:31SPEAKER_08: It's it was interesting listening to you on the tortillas and takes episode talking about this this exact topic about um who is gonna fill that mahomes shoes or who has since then.
- 13:44SPEAKER_08: And I don't think there's ever been a more perfect time to do it than Tyler Shuck.
- 13:48SPEAKER_08: Like this this guy has it all, he he has the ability to do it.
- 13:52SPEAKER_08: I just hope he's mentally there and ready to prove himself.
- 13:55SPEAKER_08: I hope he comes in with this chip on his shoulder.
- 13:57SPEAKER_08: Having to go from a pedigree program like Oregon, which really is.
- 14:02SPEAKER_08: I know they're not a blue blood, I don't want to get into any of that high grass, but they are one of the premier programs in college sports and to lose his job there and come to a mid-tier program like Texas Tech, I feel like there's some chip there, and I want to see it on the field.
- 14:17SPEAKER_08: I want to see him succeed, and I think he's gonna be really hungry for it.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I I had a great time going on with the tortillas and takes guys talking uh some offense.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: So if I reiterate some of that stuff, uh, you know, uh it is what it is, but uh yeah, I I'm I'm high on Tyler Shuck.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: I think he's gonna be awesome.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: I think a change of scenery does a lot for a young guy like that.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: So uh hyped about that.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: You've always said good stuff about Henry Columbi being your backup.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: You think he's an ideal backup.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: I agree with you on that stance.
- 14:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then these other young guys that we have on this on this quarterback room.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, Donovan Smith and Baron Morton, these are two guys that I really think could potentially step in if we do have a disastrous turn of events with some injuries and stuff like that.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: So I thought that was worth mentioning.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: I think those guys are gonna be future uh really good quarterbacks in college football.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: So uh wanted to shout out them because they're you know, everybody's gonna be talking about Tyler Shuck and Henry Columbi right now.
- 15:12SPEAKER_08: Yeah, thanks for bringing them up because the definitive they are the definition of young, raw talent.
- 15:18SPEAKER_08: Like they they just they just they have the potential to be wonderful.
- 15:22SPEAKER_08: Both of them, the the the Lubbock products and the four-star products.
- 15:26SPEAKER_08: I think they both I think that's gonna be a QB battle to watch this coming year, these coming years for the Texas Tech program, and that's a great thing to know.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: So let's move on from quarterbacks.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about some running backs, which if you listen to that tortillas and takes episode, I think this is the deepest unit on the offense.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: I think top to bottom, we have really solid guys at this position.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: And it's not often you get four to five running backs that could play meaningful snaps in Big 12 football.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: So, Tristan, what are your thoughts on the running back room?
- 15:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah, no, I was surprised when he said that.
- 16:00SPEAKER_08: But once I thought about it, I I agreed with you.
- 16:02SPEAKER_08: Um, the names that are listed for the running back room, I feel a little more confident than even the wide receiver room, which is weird because as I say pretty much every freaking episode is that this is a wide receiver school.
- 16:14SPEAKER_08: This that's a it's a group that you are never gonna be worried about, and I'm not worried about it.
- 16:19SPEAKER_08: It's just that this running back room is just that good.
- 16:23SPEAKER_08: And the great news is up.
- 16:25SPEAKER_08: I know we're not previewing the game yet, but we think that Sir Roderick is going to be ready for the Houston game.
- 16:33SPEAKER_08: So I think right out of the gate, we're gonna be able to see what this running back room has to offer.
- 16:37SPEAKER_08: And I think you're right.
- 16:38SPEAKER_08: I think this is this is gonna be the most reliable running back unit we've seen at Texas Tech ever, probably.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, uh, we should uh as young fans, yeah, absolutely.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: We should say that uh Sir Roderick is not confirmed nor denied for the Houston game yet.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be a game time decision, according to Matt Wells.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: That is the latest update from his uh press conference that he just had uh yesterday.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: So, but yeah, I mean, uh these guys top to bottom, Sir Roderick Thompson, Chaj Brooks, uh Xavier White, Shadarius Townsend, and even the true freshman Cameron Valdez.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: I think all these guys can play meaningful snaps throughout the season.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: You'll see a lot of each one of these guys, maybe except for Valdez, he's a true freshman, so he may not see a lot of playing time.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: But I think these other four guys uh are gonna get snaps and are gonna see the field this season.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: So uh I think this is a really good, really, really good unit for us.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, let's go to wide receivers, though, because that, like you said, is the most reliable position at Texas Tech.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: It always has been for the most part.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Um, Eric Ezucama is the guy you need to talk about first because he's our star.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: He is the guy when you think of this wide receiver unit.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: So uh Tristan, what are your thoughts?
- 17:49SPEAKER_08: What can you say, but all American potential out of easy?
- 17:52SPEAKER_08: Um, like you said before, you if there's a 50-50 ball, you're throwing it to him because that 50-50 ball became an 80-20 ball.
- 17:59SPEAKER_08: So I this this man is gonna be the best wide receiver in the Big 12, and I really do believe that.
- 18:07SPEAKER_08: Um, and that's the one position that you shouldn't be surprised of in Texas Tech.
- 18:11SPEAKER_08: Uh, but he's also got a lot of talent behind him.
- 18:14SPEAKER_08: Um, so like I've said on my optimism and and pessimisms is I think for Texas Tech to make the step that we're finally ready for, is it's right here.
- 18:24SPEAKER_08: It's it's we're ready for a quarterback wide receiver chemistry that we're looking for between Chuck and Easy.
- 18:30SPEAKER_08: And man, if you whenever you say those two names in succession, I think there's a lot of potential for greatness.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: And I think some other guys to look out for on this wide receiver course.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Um, McClain Mannix, Miles Price, uh Kaylin Geiger, the Troy transfer.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: I think he the all three of these guys are going to be huge uh for this offense.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: And even a Trey Cleveland or potentially uh JJ Sparkman, a Loic Fungi, all these types of guys, uh true freshman Duran Bradley.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: We just have a lot of guys uh at wide receiver right now that Matt Wells and Sonny Cumbee both believe in at this point.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Uh so if one if one guy were to go out, I think uh another guy can step in and fill that role nicely.
- 19:13SPEAKER_08: I love that we have Geiger.
- 19:14SPEAKER_08: Like that I love the G5 excellence added to where he was clearly overlooked to a P5 program.
- 19:23SPEAKER_08: And I just I can't wait for him to come home and tear up these Big 12 defenses because I think it's gonna happen.
- 19:30SPEAKER_08: I really think it's gonna translate well.
- 19:32SPEAKER_08: He's definitely a transfer I'm really excited for.
- 19:34SPEAKER_08: Um, even though it's it's usually you're excited about the transfers out of the P5 programs, like like a like a like an LLC with Monroe or Duke with Muddy Waters.
- 19:42SPEAKER_08: But yeah, it's Troy, but dang, am I excited for him to slice and dice?
- 19:48SPEAKER_01: Well, and it's a guy who has experience, it's a guy who has already proved it that he can be good at in college football.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: You know, Trey Cleveland, all these guys we believe in, but they haven't shown it yet necessarily.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: So getting Kalen Geiger here, showing that that quickness that he's already shown uh at the G5 level, hopefully it translates to the P5 level, but uh getting that experience is always welcomed in a in a pretty young unit overall.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I think that's a good point there.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Talent is talent.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: So what's next?
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: No doubt.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: Let's go to tight ends, something that uh we haven't really had to talk about much at Texas Tech um before.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: But this is a this is a unit that's gonna be utilized this year, uh, a position group that uh we have not seen for a long time at Texas Tech, but it's going to be a big part.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: And it starts with Travis Kunz.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be your starter, he's the experienced guy, he's gonna be using his COVID year, using his extra year of eligibility.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's a great pass blocker, he's a great run blocker.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, he can catch the occasional long ball, uh, take off for a pretty big play.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Um, and then we have a bunch of young guys at this position, Jed Castles and Mason Tharp in particular.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Mason Tharp sitting at about six nine, uh, huge dude, uh, supposedly getting a ton of love from the coaching staff, uh, and could potentially play big minutes as a true freshman.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: So, what are your thoughts on the tight end group here at tech?
- 21:13SPEAKER_08: Two things excite me about the tight end group uh at tech is it's one, uh I feel weird even talking about tight ends right now.
- 21:20SPEAKER_08: Uh that's number one is I'm excited to talk about tight ends.
- 21:23SPEAKER_08: And two is we actually have a debate going on in that position, too.
- 21:28SPEAKER_08: Yep, we we were talking about which player is gonna provide more at the position.
- 21:33SPEAKER_08: Is it gonna be Tharp or is it gonna be Coot's?
- 21:35SPEAKER_08: And that's that's cool to talk about.
- 21:37SPEAKER_08: Like, like to talk about a position that where we have no experience with, at least of late, um, and to to battle it out on the field, it's gonna be it's gonna be exciting to watch.
- 21:47SPEAKER_08: So I it's gonna be weird to see the implement into the system like truly this time, because I think Sunny Gummy's really gonna go at it with it.
- 21:54SPEAKER_08: Um, but it's it's it's good, it looks good on paper for me, um, but I'm ready to see it on the field.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: So, and if anything, it adds another blocker out there for the running backs and for all this to make it flow and and to look like a true, you know, football team.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: So uh excited to see that.
- 22:13SPEAKER_01: But let's go to the last positional group of the offense.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about some O-line, uh, the big boys up front, as you like to say.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Um, I I I like this unit.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: I uh talk about a unit that I've kind of done the most.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: Uh it swayed my opinion the most from the start of the offseason to the end of the offseason.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: I like our front five.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: I think they're really solid, I think they're a really good group.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, they're to protect Tyler Shuck.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: I'm a little worried after that if one guy were to go down with injury because injuries happen throughout the season.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: It's an unfortunate thing about football, but it happens uh to everybody.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: And so um, you know, I I'm worried about the depth at this position, but I think our starting five are really solid.
- 22:57SPEAKER_08: It's not an unpopular take to say that this is the most underrated unit in football at any level.
- 23:04SPEAKER_08: So, and at Texas Tech, we're just we're just used to watching the quarterback run for the lives.
- 23:10SPEAKER_08: Um, the good news is our front seat quarterbacks use their legs, so even if they need to move around a bit, they can do so.
- 23:19SPEAKER_08: But the most successful quarterbacks have some time to react, unless you're Patrick Mahomes, but obviously he's just a freak of freaking nature.
- 23:25SPEAKER_08: So um, it's I'm with you.
- 23:27SPEAKER_08: It's just it the the veteran sea is nice, the size is nice.
- 23:32SPEAKER_08: It's it's there, it's a bigger unit than we're used to at Texas Tech.
- 23:35SPEAKER_08: Um, but it's just I'm ready to see it against a Houston defense here, see how they can put up against it, and uh hopefully they'll be engaged for the rest of the season because it's one that we're often nervous about, just from what we've known from this past decade.
- 23:48SPEAKER_08: So I think we're all just ready to see it.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think what you said there about veterancy is the key point here.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: I mean, Dawson Deedon, Josh Burger, uh TJ Stormman, all three of these guys have a lot of experience in power five football.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: So, and then you add a guy like Caleb Rogers, who was added to that.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Um, Matt Wells, uh, he he gifted, or I don't know, he he gave like 11 guys on the roster like uh leadership, some some sort of leadership role.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: You know, we saw it on Twitter, he announced everybody and it was a big deal.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: And Caleb Rogers was one of those underclassmen that got one of those roles.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: So him, Weston Wright, I mean, I think it's a really solid uh five right there to start off for us.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, let's just hope for no injuries at that position because it could get really, really bad really quick if if a TJ Stormman or a Dawson Deadon were to go down.
- 24:40SPEAKER_08: It's where the offense starts, and that's that's our bread and butter, ain't it?
- 24:44SPEAKER_08: So uh I I I do feel I'm with you though.
- 24:46SPEAKER_08: I feel good about it.
- 24:47SPEAKER_08: I feel better than last year.
- 24:48SPEAKER_08: I feel a little better than pretty much any year I've been a fan.
- 24:51SPEAKER_08: So if that says anything, I hope it says it all.
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: No doubt, man.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: So let's go to some defense, let's talk some Texas Tech defense, which I think at pretty much every unit will be improved.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: Um, it's it's exciting to talk about defense this year when it really hasn't in the past.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: So uh let's start with the big boys.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: We were just talking about big boys, let's go to the defensive big boys right here at defensive line.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, this unit will be the most improved potentially of the defense.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: I'm a I'm still a little worried about the defensive backs, but the linebackers, we know the linebackers, they're gonna be solid.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: But this defensive line, the guys we have on it, it's no longer just like three or four, maybe.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: This goes six, seven deep on the defensive line with guys that could potentially make an impact.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: And it starts with our two guys, uh, the nose tackles, Jalen Hutchings and Tony Bradford.
- 25:42SPEAKER_01: Those guys are elite and they have really taken on that leadership role.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Um, I think they're really gonna be big and huge for this team and getting to the quarterbacks.
- 25:55SPEAKER_08: No, absolutely.
- 25:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I like your point of this being the most improved units because it like we were just talking about the offensive line is TechStech is just not known for the bigger guys, the bigger units.
- 26:08SPEAKER_08: So we we've really rely the reason why one of the reasons why our linebackers have been so awesome, it's not a knock on their talent at all, is that they've had to make up a lot of slack from the D line.
- 26:18SPEAKER_08: So I'm I'm with you in that.
- 26:20SPEAKER_08: It's just I'm ready to see the slack be given away from the linebackers, and I think we're finally gonna be able to see a bit of that in this unit because I've really liked the way this defense has progressed during the Wells era.
- 26:32SPEAKER_08: You can say anything you want about the Wells era, but it's been a progress on the defensive side on all units.
- 26:39SPEAKER_08: So if it's gonna begin anywhere, it's gotta begin here in the trenches because the trenches do win you defensive games.
- 26:46SPEAKER_08: So I'm ready to see it.
- 26:48SPEAKER_08: And uh I unfortunately, I just I don't think I can go further into that because I'm just on the more side of everybody else.
- 26:55SPEAKER_08: Just let's see it already.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: And and credit to Keith Patterson as well, the defensive coordinator.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: He's really done a good job since he's arrived on campus.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, this defensive unit has been a lot better than what it was under Cliff Kingsbury.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: So uh, got to give them credit for that.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, some other guys to watch out for.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: Tyree Wilson is really gonna be a beast on this team.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: The the Texas AM transfer kind of came into the program a little later in the year last season, uh, but already has shown insane progress.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: He's gotten bigger, uh, and he's gonna be a guy on the end there that's gonna be getting to that quarterback a lot quicker than the middle guys there.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: So, him, Devin Drew, he's a uh a JUCO transfer.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: He's getting the starting uh nod uh according to the first um uh roster that Matt Wells and Co.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: have put out.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: So I think there's some dudes on here, and then there's some young guys as well: Philip Blitz, LB Moore, Amarion Banks.
- 27:53SPEAKER_01: There's other guys that are out here that could potentially make an impact that we haven't seen yet.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I I think this unit's very deep, a lot more deep than it's been in past years.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: So I'm hyped for this defensive line.
- 28:05SPEAKER_08: I'd love to hear that energy.
- 28:07SPEAKER_08: So I know we're gonna be the NRG and seeing it firsthand.
- 28:10SPEAKER_08: So let's let's let's let it happen.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: Let's do it, man.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: But let's talk about the most hype position of the defense and of the entire team, really, is the linebacking core.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: This linebacking core is outrageous.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Every time I look at it, I'm impressed even more with the depth and the the top dogs.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, the top this is this has potential to be the best linebacking core in the Big 12.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: I I know Iowa State really is going to be solid, Oklahoma as well.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then Oklahoma State has some good linebackers, but uh, I think through and through with your top three guys, I mean Krishan Merriweather with Colin Schooler and with Rico Jeppers, there's not a lot of other units that go uh at least at the top, are that good.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: You know, three guys that really add so much to your team and so much uh to the defense and are leaders and have experience and everything like that.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm just really this is the best unit of the entire team.
- 29:09SPEAKER_08: Don't look at it directly because it will blind you.
- 29:12SPEAKER_08: It's like looking at the sun whenever you're looking at the defense at Texas Tech, right?
- 29:16SPEAKER_08: Um, it's that bright.
- 29:18SPEAKER_08: And it's not just on a Texas Tech field where this linebacking core has shown they're the real deal, it's in the NFL as well.
- 29:25SPEAKER_08: So I'm definitely be paying close attention to the Seattle Seahawks this season, that's for sure.
- 29:29SPEAKER_08: Um, but man, it's it's we don't have to sell it to our listeners because we all know if if if you even watch a game or two of Texas Tech, is that any defensive breakthroughs that happen, it's on the linebacking core.
- 29:41SPEAKER_08: So I'm really excited to see them.
- 29:43SPEAKER_08: It's pretty much a it's a very veteran group, and I'm really ready to see them make that next step of just holding down that spot because if if we can have some space with the linebacking core, God knows what kind of progress we can make as a defensive unit as a whole when the linebacking isn't just watching the the line the whole time.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm I'm hyped for them.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: I think uh even guys like Brandon Boyer Randall and Jacob Morgenstern could start on a lot of teams, and so they're gonna be backing up our main three guys.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: Uh uh Tyreek Matthews, you throw in a few other dudes.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: Uh it's just gonna be really solid through and through, even if there are injuries.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, of course, you don't want injuries, but if they they do happen, and so having the depth is is really exceptional, and I think is going to be a huge part of this team.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, but let's go on to defensive back, something that has been uh very low for Texas Tech, not a bright spart, uh bright spart, a bright spot for Texas Tech in the previous years.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I think it will be improved.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's going to be quite as improved as the defensive line, but it's gonna be a unit that is better than what we put out on the field last season.
- 30:54SPEAKER_08: Well, I like I like the term improved.
- 30:57SPEAKER_08: Improved.
- 30:57SPEAKER_08: What'd you say?
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Imperved, improved, spart, spark, maybe improved, maybe I've had a beer or two, who knows?
- 31:05SPEAKER_08: No, no, no, man.
- 31:06SPEAKER_08: Anyways, it's just uh I Muddy Waters is a guy that Matt Wells adores.
- 31:12SPEAKER_08: And if if a coach adores a D back and at Texas Tech, I think that says something.
- 31:17SPEAKER_08: And then we're really high on this guy, and I know he's just one DB, but if we can just have one star db, I'm very happy because this is a conference full of star power wide receivers.
- 31:28SPEAKER_08: So if we can have that man on some absolute score killers, I'm very happy about it.
- 31:34SPEAKER_08: So yeah, and I know as a Texas Tech fan, this is the bane of our existence.
- 31:40SPEAKER_08: Because if you go back this whole decade, well, pretty much uh we know the Cliff era the best.
- 31:45SPEAKER_08: Go back to the Cliff era.
- 31:47SPEAKER_08: If we had just had some sort of decent defensive back unit, we would be in an amazing team.
- 31:54SPEAKER_08: So we're just waiting for that moment, and I think we're finally moving towards a decent core, um, especially with the players we're picking up.
- 32:01SPEAKER_08: Yeah, he's from Duke, he's a play, but he's a power five player, and the guy has the numbers to back him up, and he looks like a winner.
- 32:07SPEAKER_08: So I'm I'm really into it.
- 32:09SPEAKER_08: I think this is gonna be a unit that we can be a little more excited about, or we're not just like absolutely banging our heads heads against the nearest hard surface, but it's it's it's some this defensive unit is actually something that we're not gonna be drinking our sorrows away, finally, is what I'm trying to say.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Well, and it's the unit that has the most transfers, which I think is gonna be really good because we don't have so many returners.
- 32:35SPEAKER_08: We don't throw them well.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: No, we don't, and and you know, shout out Zach McPherson.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: He really was awesome last season at that defensive back, and of course, to DeMarcus Fields, who's gonna be on this year's team, who is a really solid corner.
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: But getting these transfers and and a guy that I have just become increasingly more hyped about is Reggie Pearson.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be a starter at safety for us.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: The former Wisconsin Badger had some injury, uh, unlucky injury history with the Badgers, decided to transfer to Texas Tech.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Um, is going to be a star.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: He's already named a starter.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: He didn't even play spring ball with us, and he's already named a starter.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's hard hitting, he's awesome.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: I'm really eye on Reggie Pearson as well as Muddy Waters.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: And then you get those two cornerback transfers from UCLA and Ray Shad Williams, and the NC State transfer, Malik Dunlap.
- 33:25SPEAKER_01: Him, we have some other young guys that could potentially take that role as well.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: I'm just hyped.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: I think uh their size at this position, that's something that we haven't had in a while.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: We have guys that are 6'2, 6'3, bigger dudes that can compete with the big receivers of the Big 12.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: So I'm hyped about this unit.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: I I I'm really I'm really happy with it.
- 33:45SPEAKER_08: No, me too.
- 33:46SPEAKER_08: I I think I think we both laid it out there.
- 33:48SPEAKER_08: Uh, it's something we could finally sort of be okay with.
- 33:51SPEAKER_08: I'm not saying that this is gonna be the the be all be all, but I mean, I will for sure put every stock I own into a Wisconsin defensive transfer.
- 34:02SPEAKER_08: That's that's for dang sure, especially for a guy that never really got his chance because of uh because of health reasons, and it's just not fair.
- 34:08SPEAKER_08: I'm glad that Texas Tech gave him a chance, um, because he deserves it.
- 34:12SPEAKER_08: I'm glad that he's immediately started because that says this guy is the real deal.
- 34:15SPEAKER_08: So I'm hoping Buddy Waters is a guy right there next to him that's just gonna be shutting down these passes.
- 34:20SPEAKER_08: So I'm looking forward to it.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: So uh let's end her off with the preview with some special teams.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: We just talked about it in our previous episode, but we do have a kicker name.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Jonathan Garabay is going to be our place kicker uh for the season.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be kicking the field goals.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: Trey Wolf is gonna be doing the kickoffs.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Um, so uh, I mean, obviously, Matt Wells and Co.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: took this down to the wire here, and Jonathan Garabay is going to be the guy kicking field goals.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, I gotta say, I'm I'm happy with that.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, Trey Wolf had a very impressive uh 2019 season, but with Jonathan Garabay, we saw it in person at the Baylor game.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: Uh, kicking those field goals in crunch time in heated moments, uh, it was was really good and and was solid and won a game for us.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm happy with that choice.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna trust uh Matt Wells and and the special teams coordinator Mike Tomerdall with that decision.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: So uh we do have a field goal kicker, so that's cool.
- 35:20SPEAKER_08: I mean, I was about to say the the the hero of the Baylor game, besides Colin Schooler, of course, who's the true hero of it.
- 35:27SPEAKER_08: Um yeah, I'm I'm glad to hear that we have a kicker finally announced, and and you're right, it unfortunately Trey Wolf did kind of take a slouch from that season.
- 35:36SPEAKER_08: Um, but it's it's good to know that we finally have some stability there.
- 35:40SPEAKER_08: And uh it it's a it's a position that stings when it doesn't work out.
- 35:45SPEAKER_08: So I really do hope that Jonathan's got it together.
- 35:48SPEAKER_08: Um, he proved it before, so I'm just ready to see that continue.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: And then uh, you know, we don't really have to talk about the punter.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: Austin McMara is awesome.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: He's uh he's fantastic, he's one of the best players on the team.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: He's he's one of the best punters on the country, he's a friend of the pod, he's the best thing ever.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: So Austin McNamara is gonna be awesome as long as he stays healthy, which he will, which we're all hoping.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: He's he's he's the best.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Austin McMara shouts out to him.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, returning kicks, gonna be kind of a combination of a lot of guys.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: McLean Mannix is gonna be returning a lot of punts.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: Uh Miles Price is gonna be returning some things, Jadarius Townsend.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, so it we're all over.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: We have a lot of speed on this team as well.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: So uh hopefully we can you know get a few uh stolen touchdowns off these punt returns and kick returns.
- 36:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it was interesting to see McLean Mannix pick up both the uh the the main slot receiver position and the punt return position.
- 36:44SPEAKER_08: Um, so excited to see it happen.
- 36:46SPEAKER_08: I guess they got a lot of faith in him.
- 36:47SPEAKER_08: Um, because it's gonna be interesting to see this guy kind of get back into it.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we yeah, he missed all of last season.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: So I I know he's excited to get on the field, and I'm excited to see him.
- 36:58SPEAKER_08: Oh no, no doubt.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so that's it.
- 37:01SPEAKER_01: That's our that's our quick little breakdown to get you ready for the Houston game this Saturday.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm uh dude, I'm I'm so excited.
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm so I'm done with the offseason.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: We have talked so much about this team.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: I'm ready to actually see it on the field, and we're gonna be there for the Houston game at NRG this weekend.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm I'm hyped, bro.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: I'm hype.
- 37:21SPEAKER_08: No, dude, I am so excited because we got we got two huge Texas football brands opening up on the flagship channel of ESPN at 6 p.m.
- 37:31SPEAKER_08: The the prime channel.
- 37:32SPEAKER_08: We're gonna be on in every single bar in the country that is playing sports, and I could not be more excited because this is this is gonna be really exciting.
- 37:40SPEAKER_08: It's a fun little rivalry we have, it's been it's been going on for a few decades, and it it's I'm excited to be there, you're excited to be there, and I know a ton of our listeners are gonna be there, and yeah, I'm ready for it.
- 37:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 37:54SPEAKER_01: And so we'll get into the Houston game in just a second.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk a little schedule breakdown before that.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk about Texas Tech schedule where we see uh some wins coming, where we see a more difficult stretch coming.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, but let's get into it because uh we start off with Houston, it's a neutral side game.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: I think it's uh uh up in the air.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: I think if I you know, and we'll get into our Houston predictions here in a second, but uh for you and for me, I think that Houston game is gonna be a dub for Texas Tech.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: I think with the talent on this team, uh it just overmatches them.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: And I think if Matt Wells can put it together, if Sonny Cumbee is an improvement over David Yost, which I think he will be, if Keith Patterson keeps doing what he's doing, uh I think it's gonna be a dub for us um with the Houston game.
- 38:37SPEAKER_01: And I think we have a uh a pretty easy slate overall in the non-conference.
- 38:42SPEAKER_08: No, no, I'm with you.
- 38:43SPEAKER_08: I think that's a dub.
- 38:44SPEAKER_08: I I think this it's a tight Vegas has it very tight.
- 38:49SPEAKER_08: Um, but I think we win fairly comfortably, personally.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then the other two non-conference games they really don't have to be talked about much.
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna easily beat Stephen F.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: Austin and Florida International.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: I know the Houston Baptist game last season.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: I know COVID and COVID.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: Let's strike it up to COVID.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Let's strike it up to COVID, please.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: We we were missing a lot of guys that game, but uh, I think Stephen F.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: Austin is a respectable FCS program.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: Um, and then uh Florida International is just straight up terrible.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: So uh both of those should be easy dubs for us.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, I think that's a good way to start out.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: It's not a ton of competition, but Houston's better than a lot of G5 teams.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: So um it could be better this non-conference slate.
- 39:34SPEAKER_01: I've always complained about Texas Tech's non-conference and how we don't make it difficult enough and how we don't uh schedule good enough teams.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I think this is a decent non-conference.
- 39:44SPEAKER_08: Well, well, I it's it's the first year out of the COVID year that kind of wrecked a lot of scheduling things, and you can consider Houston a pea pibe team.
- 39:52SPEAKER_08: You really can.
- 39:53SPEAKER_08: Like whenever you're on your out of conference schedule, I say consider them as a as a power pipe team.
- 39:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah, Steven F.
- 39:59SPEAKER_08: Austin, you're gonna have a Texas FCS team.
- 40:01SPEAKER_08: It's gonna happen, and FIU completely disappointing, but I'll give them the pass year one out of uh out of COVID year.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: Sure, sure.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: So uh hopefully we start three and oh there, but then we start Big 12 play with two away games that are really gonna determine how we do this season.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: This Houston game is huge for us, obviously.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: But after that, Big 12 play, we start off at Texas in Austin, uh at DKR.
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is such a huge game, and then right after that, we go at West Virginia in Morgantown.
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: So uh I don't know what you think about these two games, but I think if we get one of them, I'm happy.
- 40:39SPEAKER_08: I'm happy if we get one of them, yes.
- 40:41SPEAKER_08: But I think the potential to get both of them is there.
- 40:44SPEAKER_08: Um, we don't know what we're getting with UT right now.
- 40:47SPEAKER_08: Uh, we don't know if this Stark hire is better than Tom Herman at all, and it's a brand new team, so that like opens up a whole case of vulnerability.
- 40:57SPEAKER_08: So I mean I'm excited about that.
- 40:58SPEAKER_08: And getting Texas early, we should have beat them game one this past season in the conference.
- 41:04SPEAKER_08: Um, so I feel good about it.
- 41:06SPEAKER_08: I I really do.
- 41:07SPEAKER_08: And same with the West Virginia game, we've had their number lately.
- 41:10SPEAKER_08: Um, Neil Brown apparently he's highly regarded in the uh in the sports media area, but I do feel good about us continuing the streak.
- 41:19SPEAKER_08: I can see us winning both these games and being four and oh, or I mean should say five and oh.
- 41:24SPEAKER_08: Um, but I would agree with you, I'd be very happy with one and one because the fact of the matter is with the UT game, is it could be the last time we ever play them.
- 41:34SPEAKER_08: So it's it's there's a lot on the line going to Austin this season.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: It's really significant.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: They're gonna have a brand new quarterback.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: Hudson Card was named the quarterback over there.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: Uh for the Longhorns, they obviously have Bijan Robinson.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: We'll get into a full breakdown once it gets to that week, but uh their talent is there as it is always.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, Steve Sarkeesian has uh shown that uh you know, been disappointing at other head coaching opportunities uh before, and a lot of factors played into that.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, Texas I think is more of an up in the air game than I think a lot of uh people would say it is.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: I think a lot of people just give Texas the credit because they're typical, typical, but uh I think that is is honestly it could be a 50-50 game.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Some people, you know, 60-40, whatever you want to call it, but I think it's gonna be uh uh kind of a coin toss with that one.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: West Virginia the same way.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm not thrilled about starting off Big 12 play with two away games, but um, you know, I think these could potentially be uh two and oh could be one and one and one.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: I'm happy with one and one.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: So let's move on to our first home game of the Big 12 slate, which is TCU, a team that's gonna be pretty solid this season.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: They're solid every single year under Gary Patterson.
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: So uh this is a big one at home.
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: This is homecoming.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: This is a big time game for Texas Tech, and and you know, I I just I really hope we get a dub here.
- 42:55SPEAKER_08: It's home, yeah.
- 42:56SPEAKER_08: We got homecoming with TCU.
- 42:58SPEAKER_08: Um it's a lot of people are pretty high on them, and that's that's it's they're higher on them than they are, say, West Virginia.
- 43:07SPEAKER_08: So it's it's gonna be a tough game.
- 43:08SPEAKER_08: It always is against TCU, but TCU has always been one of those where we've truly always had a fighting chance.
- 43:14SPEAKER_08: Like, even we're really bad, we can sometimes sometimes beat TCU.
- 43:18SPEAKER_08: Um, and I I again it's just the thing about these next two teams that we're talking about with TCU and Kansas is it kind of it's kind of similar with Texas's West Virginia, same Kansas.
- 43:30SPEAKER_08: Yeah, well, I hope, but um, it's it's it's barely 50-50 because I could totally see us winning this game, but it's not uh reasonable to believe that we will take the L as well.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 43:43SPEAKER_01: And so with this Texas West Virginia TCU, we get two of them.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: I'm over the moon.
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 43:49SPEAKER_01: Honestly, like if we go one and two, I'm pretty happy.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty satisfied.
- 43:53SPEAKER_01: I'm not happy, but I'm satisfied.
- 43:55SPEAKER_08: Like there's still hope with one and two, yeah, no doubt.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: So this is a tough stretch to.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Start off Big 12 play, but uh definitely something that I think we can do and compete with.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, and like you like you mentioned, we go to Kansas after this.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, Kansas is going to be a bottom feeder of the Big 12.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: I do not think it's going to be as close as it has been in recent years with the Jayhawks.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, they have another coaching change, they have another brand new team with a bunch of young guys.
- 44:21SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't think it's going to be close, uh, to be honest.
- 44:25SPEAKER_08: It better not be.
- 44:26SPEAKER_08: It's it's year one with the new coach with Lance.
- 44:29SPEAKER_08: So, I mean, a lot of people are pretty high on Lance.
- 44:31SPEAKER_08: Apparently, he's a good coach uh at Buffalo, which is obviously saying something.
- 44:35SPEAKER_08: It takes a lot to build a program like that, but it's not gonna happen year one.
- 44:38SPEAKER_08: And a lot of their teams are a lot of transfers from Buffalo.
- 44:42SPEAKER_08: I'm not knocking on a G5 program.
- 44:44SPEAKER_08: I mean, I was just high on one of our G5 transfers, but Buffalo in the Mac, I don't think is exactly the same as Troy in the Sunbelts.
- 44:52SPEAKER_08: So I don't think a team of that is really gonna make a huge difference.
- 44:56SPEAKER_08: Um, so the real discussion is Texas, West Virginia, and TCU because Kansas should be an automatic dub.
- 45:02SPEAKER_08: I know we lost in Lawrence last time we went there, but it should be an automatic dub.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: And you know what I think, yeah, exactly.
- 45:10SPEAKER_01: Well, like you said, but you know what else I think is going to be an automatic dub, and this might be a hot take.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: I don't like Kansas State.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: I don't think Kansas State is going to be good this year.
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: As an I know I know that's a hot take.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: I really I'm after breaking down these positional groups, they have Skyler Thompson who's solid, and they have Deuce Bawn who's good.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: After that, who do they have on this team?
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: And I really I think Kansas State will be the easiest outside of Kansas that may come back and bite me in the butt, but I really think this Kansas State game at home after we come back from Lawrence is gonna be another dub for us.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: I really do.
- 45:48SPEAKER_08: I disagree with you saying that K-State's the easiest outside of Kansas because I think that's Baylor.
- 45:53SPEAKER_08: I think Baylor is still very deep in the hole right now.
- 45:57SPEAKER_08: Um, K-State just has a very good coaching pro.
- 46:03SPEAKER_08: So, like they they they always know, they always have a guy that at least can get them through situations with lesser talent.
- 46:09SPEAKER_08: Um, and good and tech stech hasn't exactly had the best time with Kansas State this this decade, maybe even last decade.
- 46:15SPEAKER_08: Um, so I'm not gonna just strike that up as a W.
- 46:18SPEAKER_08: The good news is I don't think it's an L either.
- 46:20SPEAKER_08: Uh, I I feel the same way about Kansas State that I do about say West Virginia.
- 46:25SPEAKER_08: Like I feel pretty good about it, but I don't feel great.
- 46:28SPEAKER_08: Uh, I would say like 6040.
- 46:30SPEAKER_08: Like I'm feeling 6040 on West Virginia and Kansas State.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: See, I think the talent level with West Virginia is higher, and that's what I based all this on.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: You know, you can talk about past history, you can talk about Texas should be 100-0, right?
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: The the Bill Snyder effect or whatever, he's no longer there.
- 46:47SPEAKER_01: They have Chris Kleiman there, who I think is a good coach, but I just don't see nobody's high on this defense right now.
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: I think this defense is gonna be straight up bad for Kansas State, so their offense may make up for that, but that's something that Kansas State has not had as a bad defense in a while.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: So I I think that's gonna be the difference here.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: And I think can't I'm not high on Kansas State really at all, but um, you know, I would chalk that up as a dub.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, but then what I'm not gonna chalk up as a dub is right after that we go to Norman and play Oklahoma.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's gonna be a loss.
- 47:22SPEAKER_01: Oklahoma's awesome.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: Uh, I have really no faith that Texas Tech has a chance in this game, but that's more of a credit to OU than it is to us.
- 47:31SPEAKER_08: No, completely agreed.
- 47:32SPEAKER_08: This is like a 90-10 game to me.
- 47:34SPEAKER_08: Like 90 Oklahoma wins, 10 tech wins because there's always a chance.
- 47:39SPEAKER_01: Um, there's just too much talent, there's too much talent on OU's roster.
- 47:45SPEAKER_08: The OU team could win it all.
- 47:47SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and the thing is, I wish they won it all three years ago, so we wouldn't have this wouldn't have these Big 12 conversations because I think if OEU is a national champion, nothing changes.
- 47:57SPEAKER_08: But this could be the year where they do it, which is so ironic.
- 48:02SPEAKER_08: Um, but I I don't see it really happening, and that's okay.
- 48:06SPEAKER_08: And which, but it that would mean 10 years in a row that we've lost to OEU, which used to be a pretty competitive rivalry.
- 48:13SPEAKER_08: We used to be we used to exchange blows with the Sooners in the early 2000s, but unfortunately, those dates have been long gone with a lot of teams.
- 48:22SPEAKER_08: But it's it's it's an L.
- 48:24SPEAKER_08: There's really no way around it.
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 48:27SPEAKER_01: And you know, I've been surprised before, so who knows?
- 48:30SPEAKER_01: But uh, after the OU game, we have a bye week, so we have two weeks to prepare for Iowa State who comes to Lubbock.
- 48:38SPEAKER_01: This is a very interesting game.
- 48:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, Iowa State is fantastic, they're gonna be great this year.
- 48:43SPEAKER_01: They're I think they're seven in the preseason.
- 48:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, they're gonna be right there with OU competing for that Big 12 conference championship and potentially a playoff spot.
- 48:51SPEAKER_01: But for us to have two weeks to prepare for them, for them to have to come to Lubbock, and this is a sneaky game that could potentially you could see an upset here.
- 49:01SPEAKER_08: It's funny.
- 49:02SPEAKER_08: Like, let's keep going back to your your episode with the Tortezen takes, which is great.
- 49:06SPEAKER_08: Is this this as they were saying, this is the con, this is the definition of a trap game.
- 49:11SPEAKER_08: Um, because this Iowa State and OU play the week before this, right?
- 49:16SPEAKER_08: I think that's the case, and so that's probably an L for Iowa State.
- 49:21SPEAKER_08: I'm not gonna just go ahead and mark it for it, but uh the odds are it is, and I would love to catch them in in low spirits in in that in that situation because that's or or catch them in high spirits.
- 49:34SPEAKER_01: Imagine they beat Oklahoma and they're just they've been so focused on that game, and they don't even they haven't even prepared for Texas Tech the next the following week.
- 49:43SPEAKER_01: So who knows, man?
- 49:45SPEAKER_01: This could be I'm just happy we have two weeks to prepare.
- 49:48SPEAKER_08: Well, you're talking about morale, it's just such a non-mathematical question because you can say that the L is a tougher thing to face, or the W is a tougher thing to face.
- 49:59SPEAKER_08: Because with the W, my mind it's just like this is a machine, they're like on a train and they're ready to freight train through anything, but with an L, they're like, Okay, fine, I guess where this isn't what we thought it was, kind of thing.
- 50:11SPEAKER_08: But either way, there's no right answer to it because I do think this is has the making of a trade uh of a trap game, and if they're ranked really high, the good news is there's a high chance it's at night as well.
- 50:21SPEAKER_08: Because ESBN does like putting high-ranking games at night in Lubbock because it's a great ass atmosphere.
- 50:29SPEAKER_08: We'd like to show up for those.
- 50:31SPEAKER_08: So if this is a trap game, I really do feel good about it.
- 50:34SPEAKER_08: I feel way better about it since it's Iowa State than it is Oklahoma, because I think Oklahoma is just a a well-oiled war machine, while I would say it's more of a Texas Tech in the situation, like just like a plucky underdog that is like just really out to show themselves.
- 50:51SPEAKER_08: It's just not as it's not the same level.
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: Sure, sure.
- 50:54SPEAKER_01: I agree with you.
- 50:55SPEAKER_01: So uh that's a potential upset candidate.
- 50:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm not gonna I'm not gonna call that a win by any means for Texas Tech, but uh it has the potential to be really fun for the Red Raiders.
- 51:06SPEAKER_01: So uh the following week, we have Oklahoma State come into town, which I think will be a much more even match game.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: Uh Oklahoma State has does not have the talent on this year's team that they've had in the past in terms of their skill position guys.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: They don't have a Chuba Hubbard anymore, they don't have a Tylan Wallace anymore, they don't have that elite receiver or elite running back that they always seem to have had the last 10 years under Gundy.
- 51:30SPEAKER_01: Um, and even further back than that.
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: But uh I I'm I'm not as high on Oklahoma State, I'm not high on a lot of these mid-tier Big 12 teams that I have been in the past.
- 51:40SPEAKER_01: So I think this one could be, I think it's a 50-50 at this point.
- 51:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm with you.
- 51:44SPEAKER_08: I would roll 50-50 as well.
- 51:47SPEAKER_08: Um, like I said, it's gonna be a very evenly matched team, and we've we've actually got them these past few years.
- 51:54SPEAKER_08: We've we've been able to actually punch them here in time and two, because that wasn't the case before.
- 51:59SPEAKER_08: Uh, they've really had us for the past time.
- 52:02SPEAKER_08: Um, but I do think having them in Lubbock is nice for uh for senior day.
- 52:06SPEAKER_08: I hope our record is good so we can have a nice, great crowd there, a good time for it as well.
- 52:11SPEAKER_08: Um, because I I think if we have a good environment, I think that pushes us a little over 50-50.
- 52:17SPEAKER_08: So, because I'm I'm pretty bullish on this team, I really am.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: And and and hopefully by this point in the season, we're already looking at a bowl game, if not right on the line.
- 52:27SPEAKER_01: So, you know, that could be even more motivation for us to be like, hey, if we get this dub right now, we're bull eligible.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: So that's another thing to think about.
- 52:36SPEAKER_08: I really hope we're already bull eligible at this point.
- 52:38SPEAKER_08: I hope so too.
- 52:39SPEAKER_08: But you need the stars are on our side there, but you're right with this this tech team.
- 52:44SPEAKER_08: These this pretty much as long as we've been a fan, it's improving that it could just assume that's the case, which is funny because Texas Tech goes to bowls like Sunday morning, right?
- 52:55SPEAKER_01: But well, well, but you know, take out the last 10 years.
- 52:58SPEAKER_08: That's what I'm saying.
- 52:59SPEAKER_08: Like, before before we were invested, TexTech always went to bowls.
- 53:03SPEAKER_08: Um, but it's again this is a good rivalry, it's gonna be it's gonna be a fun game no matter what, it's gonna be close.
- 53:08SPEAKER_08: I don't think it's a blowout either way.
- 53:10SPEAKER_08: So um it's 50-50 to me.
- 53:13SPEAKER_08: I I don't see how either way you can talk you can chop that up.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: And then we finish off the year with Baylor going to Waco.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: Uh we haven't played them.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: We played them there what two seasons ago.
- 53:25SPEAKER_01: But before and we should have beat him.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: That was a blown the ref blew it.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: The ref blew it.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: We should have beat a really good Baylor team that year, actually.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: Um, uh, but uh yeah, we go to Baylor, go to Waco.
- 53:38SPEAKER_01: Uh Baylor, I'm not high on as well.
- 53:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's gonna be a theme with some of these mid-tier Big 12 teams.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm not high on Baylor.
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: I think this this has potential to be a pretty good dub for Texas Tech.
- 53:51SPEAKER_08: The thing about the the Baylor game is it depending on what media outlet you listen to, either Texas Tech or Baylor is number nine in the Big 12.
- 53:58SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 53:59SPEAKER_08: But I think they're radically wrong, and I think this should be an absolute win for Texas Tech.
- 54:06SPEAKER_08: I think there's no excuse for losing this game.
- 54:09SPEAKER_08: So I think this tops off a good season at the very end.
- 54:12SPEAKER_08: We better be bowl eligible at this point.
- 54:15SPEAKER_08: Um, I I can't look at this game without thinking a win because it better happen.
- 54:21SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 54:22SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, it seems like you feel with Baylor what I feel with Kansas State.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: So um, I think both of those teams, we have a lot of potential for a win there.
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think we should be better.
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: The talent is much better than both of those teams.
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: So uh that's it.
- 54:37SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be the ender off.
- 54:39SPEAKER_01: Tristan, I'm gonna ask you a question here.
- 54:42SPEAKER_01: What is your record prediction for Texas Tech this season?
- 54:46SPEAKER_08: I'm bullish.
- 54:47SPEAKER_08: I feel really good about this team.
- 54:49SPEAKER_08: I'm thinking this is Matt Wells' redemption story.
- 54:52SPEAKER_08: I think he fixes the wrongs that lost him his close games, his games where you're just railing your head against a solid surface.
- 55:00SPEAKER_08: I think we go eight and four.
- 55:02SPEAKER_08: I really do.
- 55:03SPEAKER_08: I think this is gonna be the biggest surprise in the Big 12.
- 55:06SPEAKER_08: I think we're the story in the Big 12 outside of the winners.
- 55:10SPEAKER_08: Um, I really do think that we're the plucky underdogs.
- 55:13SPEAKER_08: I think we're gonna get there, get to a bowl easily.
- 55:15SPEAKER_08: I think we're gonna bowl in October at latest November.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I'm I'm I'm right there with you, dude.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: If you listen to the tortillas and takes episode, I predicted eight and four as well.
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, I I predict eight and four, five and four in the Big 12.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: I think uh wins are gonna come against Houston, Stephen F.
- 55:33SPEAKER_01: Austin, Florida, Atlantic at West Virginia, at Kansas, Kansas State at home, Oklahoma State at home, and then add Baylor.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: I think those are our eight wins right there uh for Texas Tech, could potentially be nine and four, including the bowl game.
- 55:47SPEAKER_01: And I think we are going to have an Alamo Bowl appearance in San Antonio.
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: I think that's what I'm that's what I'm predicting right now.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, I know that is hard to believe knowing how Texas Tech has been the past few years, but I really am high on this team, and I am going to be really disappointed if we end up being, you know, just at that level again.
- 56:11SPEAKER_08: I think the fans are expecting seven wins realistically, which is a good realistic to kind of base it on.
- 56:19SPEAKER_08: But if Matt Wells is not going bowling, it's the end of the Matt Wells era, and I know he knows that.
- 56:24SPEAKER_08: I know Kirby Hokutt knows that.
- 56:26SPEAKER_08: I know the boosters are making Kirby Hocut know that.
- 56:29SPEAKER_08: Um, so I really do think this is gonna be an eight-win season.
- 56:32SPEAKER_08: Um, Matt Wells has shown greatness in the Mountain West conference with his Utah State Aggies, and the Utah State is not known for being a stellar football program.
- 56:41SPEAKER_08: And I know it's the Mountain West, y'all can say that like all day, but it's all relative.
- 56:46SPEAKER_08: And the Utah State Aggies are not known for being stellar, and that guy put Jordan Love into the NFL.
- 56:52SPEAKER_08: So I think there's real potential to happen here, and I think Tyler Shuck's gonna be the guy he's looking for that's in the Jordan Love in Texas Tech.
- 57:00SPEAKER_08: So he he he he was good enough to start at Oregon, y'all.
- 57:04SPEAKER_08: So I I really feel I just want to reinforce that I feel so good about this season because we have to.
- 57:11SPEAKER_08: This is a very important season in a lot of ways, not just Matt Wells, but for Texas Tech and the Big 12.
- 57:18SPEAKER_08: I it because I'm gonna be rooting for the big eight and every everyone they play because I'm not saying that Texas Tech's going to the Pac 12 anymore as it was announced, but I want this to be the best conference that Texas Tech can be in because it could be a lot of fun, it can be really competitive, and we need to make sure that we put the best product on the field, and I expect to see it.
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, we forgot to mention that Talking Tech is no longer a Pac-12 podcast.
- 57:42SPEAKER_01: Uh that happened so early on in the week.
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: I almost forgot about it.
- 57:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, yeah, you know, it was a good run as a Pac-12 podcast, but uh since the Pac 12 has decided not to expand, uh, we are no longer there, and we are a fan of uh we're a Texas Tech podcast again.
- 57:58SPEAKER_01: Uh a big eight, you know.
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: Let's let's I guess we're gonna rebuild this Big 12 again.
- 58:03SPEAKER_01: Uh, we'll get into that as the season goes on.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: We hear some more stuff.
- 58:06SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, man, I I back to back to Texas Tech.
- 58:10SPEAKER_01: I'm high on this team.
- 58:11SPEAKER_01: I think eight wins is realistic and even potentially more.
- 58:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh, I named off some of those schools that I think are gonna be wins here.
- 58:19SPEAKER_01: I could even see a win at Texas, I could see a win TCU at home, I could you know see a potential maybe upset win against Iowa State at home after having a bye week, right before that, having two weeks to prepare.
- 58:31SPEAKER_01: So I think eight and four is is my prediction.
- 58:35SPEAKER_01: I I don't necessarily think that's the ceiling, which is really weird to say.
- 58:39SPEAKER_08: No, I'm right there with you because uh before we got on this podcast, I said we are potentially looking at an eight and oh start to OU.
- 58:48SPEAKER_08: Um, I'm not saying that's gonna happen.
- 58:50SPEAKER_08: It's a bold take, it is a bold take, but there's no team you're looking at this in this where you're saying that's an automatic L.
- 58:57SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 58:57SPEAKER_08: Um, because the only two teams that pop out at me are Texas and TCU.
- 59:02SPEAKER_08: Obviously, our two rivals that are gonna pop out here.
- 59:05SPEAKER_08: But it if we're gonna take L's, I think that's where it's gonna be.
- 59:10SPEAKER_08: Um, so it if we start out eight and oh, I think that means that Texas Tech's in a great spot.
- 59:16SPEAKER_08: We can lose every game from there, and I think Tex Tech's in a great spot.
- 59:19SPEAKER_08: And I think Tex that finally we can say that Kirby Hoke made the ride higher because I'm so proud of Kirby Hoke for leading this, the Big 12.
- 59:27SPEAKER_08: He's literally the leader of the Big 12 at this moment because he's the head of the expansion community.
- 59:33SPEAKER_08: Um, and that's awesome.
- 59:34SPEAKER_08: Because I think what's great about that is, and with the announcement from the Big 12 today, is I think the Big Eight are committed to staying together, and I think that's the good move at this point, it's the right move at this point because I think this is literally the only option, and we are more valuable together than we are apart.
- 59:53SPEAKER_08: So I'm excited to see where it goes from there.
- 59:55SPEAKER_08: I'm glad Texas Tech's at the front of it, and that's where we belong.
- 59:58SPEAKER_08: I think one of the most valuable programs at this point, but back to the football, I do think that there's potential for a really great season.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_08: And on this podcast, we'd like to say positive, but I think it's actually there this time.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: We are very optimistic here on Talk and Tech.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_01: That's what you come here for.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_01: You come to hear that Texas Tech is going to be eight and four and make a pretty solid bowl game.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: So uh we'll see how the season goes.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: It starts this weekend with Houston.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about Houston, let's talk about Houston.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, the Cougars, it is going to be Saturday, September 4th, 6 p.m.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: on ESPN, the flagship ESPN, main ESPN.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_01: We are gonna have all eyes on us at 6 p.m.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_01: on Saturday, week one of college football, NRG Stadium, neutral site game, technically in Houston, Texas.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_01: Texas Tech is a one-point favorite at this point from what we looked at.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, dude, how hyped are you for this?
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_08: Bro, we're gonna be there.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna be like out of my chair the entire game.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_08: And I have a very Rob Bro question to ask you.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_08: What's that?
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_08: It is U of H a rival?
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: I U of H, I I guess I'd consider them a rival.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_01: I that's that's a difficult, that's that's tough because I like the Houston game.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_01: I like playing the University of Houston.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_01: I just don't I just don't know if it's quite a game I get up for as much as my as the other rivals of Texas Tech.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_08: See, this is kind of how I feel about it.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_08: Like whenever I'm breaking it down in my head, there's literally no other G5 school that I'm up for more than you of age.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: Okay, but does that I mean, would you I what's would you consider them on the same level of rivalry as say at TCU?
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_08: No.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_08: Okay, yeah, that's how I feel because I feel like I'd rather be TCU and Baylor.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: Well, okay.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_01: I'm I probably uh to be honest, I probably I probably get up for the Oklahoma State game more than I get up for the U of Age.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I was a little surprised when he said that OSU was the biggest rival of Texas Tick after after UT.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_08: Well, no, no, no.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: The question was outside of Texas.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah, that was an easy, easily OSU.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_08: If it's not if it's not OSU, it's OU.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_01: So uh no, I I mean I'm not gonna say Houston's a rival necessarily.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, I do like that game.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm not like sure I get up for them more than any other G5 team, but that's G5, you know, that's a it's a step below.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_08: You say that, but there's some stellar G5 teams out there are there playing UCF or Boise State.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_08: I would not I'm not not care.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_08: It's not that I don't care, but I would care more to beat U of H than literally any others, or even SMU.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_08: I'd rather beat U of H than SMU.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_01: I'd I'd rather beat Cincinnati than U of H at this point.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_01: No, no, oh yeah, uh especially with how good that team's gonna be.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_08: I understand that, but like as a cultural from a cultural standpoint, yeah, I'd rather be beating U of H.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: So you would rather lose to like if say we're playing in the same season, you would rather uh lose to Cincinnati and beat U of H than lose to U of H and beat Cincinnati this year in 2021.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, probably no.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_01: I go better team here.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_01: I don't, I truly don't care that much about U of H.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_01: I like the game, I like that they're in the state of Texas, but I'm not gonna consider them a huge rival for us.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_08: Wow.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_08: So that that means that's like an anti-endorsement to be added to the Big 12 from Steven.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm not big on U of H to the Big 12.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_01: They're like my sixth or seventh choice at this point.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, I know that's kind of that might be a hot take for some people.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't want another Texas team in the Big 12.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_01: I really don't.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_01: It it competes with recruiting for us.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: It uh I don't I don't know how much room U of H has to grow, but uh you know I I'd I'd rather them in the Big 12 than a lot of other teams.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_01: That's right, but maybe not those five or six above them.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: But uh we can get into expansion talk later.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_01: We're talking U of H Texas Tech right now this year in a few days, in a few days.
- 1:04:25SPEAKER_01: In uh I mean I'm leaving for Houston in two days.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_01: This is extremely electric.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to be at the Ramlin Raiders tailgate.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to be I'm excited to be outside of NRG.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to see Texas Tech play for the first time this season.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_01: So U of H, man, they are uh mixed reviews here.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_01: They're solid.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, they have been for the last few, well, not necessarily the last couple of years, but before that, U of H has always been pretty good.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_01: So last season, COVID year, everybody kind of said they were gonna forget about last season, but they still take it into account.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_01: Uh U of H was three and five last season.
- 1:05:06SPEAKER_01: They had COVID issues, they had two games that were canceled um last season.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, they returned a lot of guys, they have a lot of pretty uh pretty good players on this team.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, they were projected fourth in the to finish fourth in the American conference in the preseason poll.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_01: We all know preseason polls don't really matter, but uh U of H, man, what do you think about them?
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_08: I mean, it it's it's absolutely a team that you can't overlook.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_08: I like a lot you and I were talking about this before we entered this podcast is you're you're a little disappointed in the offseason record, like the off, I mean the offseason schedule, saying how it's nothing but G5 and FCS teams.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_08: But I told you that I could consider U of H a power five program in the offseason schedule because that's the skill they're bringing to the table.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_08: That's the at least the competition.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_08: They're bringing to the table.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_08: They want to beat us way more than they want to, we want to beat them.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_08: So if we're just talking about this single game, it's dangerous.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_08: This we last time we played the last couple of times we played U of H, we've got them.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_08: Shockingly.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_08: But they do have a new coach, and they have a coach that's gotten the best of us in at U at West Virginia.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_08: And this new coach at West Virginia hasn't figured it out.
- 1:06:27SPEAKER_08: And they fired the coach that we had figured out at U of H with Clint Cliffs Kingsbury of all people.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_08: So um it's tough to say, but I don't think Dana has it under control.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_08: I think they're in a a lull uh at U of H that they're not used to, they're not used to losing this many games because they're used to owning the American and they're not going to do it this season.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_08: They didn't last season.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_08: And I think uh there's a lot of hot seats going around in that program.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and there's a lot of good teams in the American this year.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_01: Cincinnati is a projected preseason, I think, top 10 teams.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_01: Make the playoff.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_01: You know, let's go.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_01: I, you know, Cincy, uh, come to the Big 12.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_01: I'm a hype for it.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, they have to go against Cincinnati, UCF, Memphis.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's a tough slate of games.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_01: And and I would right now, I agree that those three teams that are probably gonna finish above Houston.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_01: Um, I I I still think Houston's gonna put a good product on the field this year.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna be a solid team.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, players to watch for them.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_01: Their quarterback, Clayton Toon.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_01: If anything, he's experienced.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_01: He started seven games in 2019, started every game for Houston last season.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's got a big arm.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, he's he's solid.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_01: He throws a lot of interceptions, and we'll get into that when we talk about um Texas Tech keys to winning.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_01: But uh Clayton Toots got to watch out for.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_01: The experience worries me a little bit.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it it it the quarterback position battle is gonna be something to watch.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_08: It's the the biggest question in any football game.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_08: Uh, but I do think we have the edge.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_08: I think we have a more talented quarterback on that, uh, on that spectrum.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_08: So I'm gonna go us on that one.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, we need to talk about him.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_01: Keyshawn Carter is with the Houston Cougars this season.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_01: That's nice.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_01: A guy who was on Texas Tech last season and was very good for Texas Tech uh when he wasn't hurt.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, he's he's really talented, he's fast as heck, he can play the slot, he can play outside, he's going to be an impact guy for the Cougars this season and might finish as the wide receiver one.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_01: Uh, it could be another, it could be other guys, but I would bet Keyshawn Carter, I think he's going back.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_01: I think he's from Houston originally.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_01: So going back to that hometown team, some guys just really uh get a boost from that, you know, going back to Houston and going playing in front of family and friends all the time.
- 1:08:49SPEAKER_01: Uh, they're gonna be at the game at NRG.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, he was the second leading receiver last season for Texas Tech, and he's he's just really good, he's just really solid.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: I would have loved to have brought him back, but he's gonna be a guy we have to watch out for.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_08: Yeah, what is with that weird pipeline between tech and U of H transfers?
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_01: I know it's weird, but they they love going back with uh like him and Kyler Edwards and Tazan Henry, and all the all these guys seem to go when it doesn't work out at Texas Tech, they go straight to U of H.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_01: And and most of it is just guys wanting to go back home.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, we get a lot of recruits from the Houston area, so as soon as they decide to leave Texas Tech, that's probably their number one choice.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, he's gonna be dangerous, but uh it's not like our wide receiver room is lacking as well.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_01: It's true, it's true, and we have a much better defensive back unit to uh respond uh to Keyshawn Carter this season.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_01: So uh another guy that I I did some research on U of H, uh their tight end, uh Christian Trahan.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, looks like he has NFL potential.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_01: He's a guy to look out for.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_01: They have a linebacker in Donovan Mutton, who is uh he was hurt most of last season, which is a huge part of their bad record in 2020.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, 61 tackles in 2019, the year previous.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_01: So he's a guy that's gonna be back.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_01: He's an impact player on that linebacking core.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, and then there are two cornerbacks, Marcus Jones and Demarion Williams, uh, two guys that are uh extremely elite uh back there.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_01: Uh Marcus Jones is gonna be the guy that has the Ezukama assignment.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: He's gonna be shadowing uh Easy E pretty much the entire game.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_01: So uh watch out for that matchup.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be exciting because we have a really good corner and a really good wide receiver going one-on-one against each other.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_08: Well, that's good.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_08: I like to hear that because it's a good test for Easy at the very beginning of the season.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_08: I'm glad we're not just like walking him into some sort of baby game, he's gonna be put up against the grindstone immediately, and we know he's gonna meet that challenge because this guy is literally gonna be the best in the in the Big 12, and I'm calling it right now.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_08: So if he can dunk on the Big 12, he's gonna be able to dunk on a UH, and that's no knock on that man, but but easy is gonna just kill anyone around him.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I mean, even even to this point, even I know easy's gonna do his thing, but this really is impactful for the other receivers to get involved because having a lockdown corner on your main receiver is a tough deal no matter what.
- 1:11:11SPEAKER_01: So, uh, having Kaylin Geiger get involved, having McLean Mannix, having Trey Cleveland potentially uh Miles Price, these guys need to make an impact as that second receiver, uh, to Eric Azukama.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_01: So uh this will be interesting, it'll be an interesting matchup.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna be really fun watching these two guys go at it.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_08: Oh, for sure.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_08: Uh, that's a good point to bring up saying that like just because a man has some sort of jail guard on him doesn't mean he can't throw it to the other guys, right?
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_08: Exactly.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_08: So what's what's so fun about this game, and that's why I asked you before we entered this conversation is that is this a rivalry game?
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_08: Is that there's gonna be a lot of high blood pressure on the field.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_08: So it's just I think these guys both sides want to win it so badly, and I think a little more so on the Couge side.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_08: So, because they weren't recruited to Texas Tech, or they thought that saying home was a better move, or they previously played for Texas Tech, yeah, and they kind of had that revenge deal going on, yeah.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_08: Exactly, exactly.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_08: So it's gonna be really fun to watch because I think both sides will be tested to their max immediately.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_01: It's it's a huge game, it's it's such a huge game for us to start off the year and for us to make uh noise and to just get a big time dub immediately to start off the year one and oh, it just does wonders for the morale and for the coaching staff and for all these players moving forward.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_01: So I really hope we get one here in Houston.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_01: Let's talk about some keys to winning.
- 1:12:39SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is uh it's just there's I have three written down.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_01: I think there's three things that we really need to take care of in this U of H game um to really get this dub and to start off the season one and oh.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: And that first one is have Clayton Toon make quick decisions.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_01: The guy throws a ton of interceptions in 2020.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_01: He threw 10 interceptions to just 15 touchdowns.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_01: The year previous, he threw nine interceptions to just 11 touchdowns.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_01: He throws a lot of interceptions, so you make him make quick decisions, he's probably gonna make a mistake.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_01: So we need these defensive linemen to get to him as quickly as possible.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_01: Jalen Hutchings, uh, Tyree Wilson, Devin Drew, uh, um Tony Bradford.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_01: These guys are gonna be such an impactful group here.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_01: They need to make him make bad decisions.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_08: Oh, I'm ready to hear muddy waters grab some interceptions right off the bat.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_08: That's what I'm all I was thinking of was Muddy Waters jumping up and grabbing that ball.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, please.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_08: That's good to hear.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_08: Um, it because it's it's nice to be able to test your defensive guys like up against a uh an anxiety-rittered quarterback.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_08: So I'm I'm like that's good to that's good to hear.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_08: Um, because we want to be able to test both sides of the ball, but you probably can't rely on that because that's more of an experience thing.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_08: So he might be able to improve on itself there, but it's obviously something to address.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_01: Sure, absolutely.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_01: So I just I was pretty mind blown by those stats, how many interceptions he has thrown in his career.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_01: So uh hopefully that trend continues with this one.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, the second key to the game I have is getting the running backs engaged early and often with this Texas Tech team.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_01: Whether or not Sir Roderick Thompson plays, whoever takes that role takes the first few snaps, let's get them involved early.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_01: Let's make this a game where we have to grind it out or where they have to grind out a really tough rushing attack.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, whether it's Taj Brooks or Xavier White or Sir Roderick Thompson.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, we need to get these running backs involved early and get the and keep them involved throughout the whole game.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_01: Let's not make this a Tyler Shook show and have him throw the ball a ton and go right back to what we were with Cliff Kingsbury.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_08: For sure.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_08: I mean, that's what we keep looking forward to with this running back unit is not relying on the quarterback and wide receivers.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_08: If you can fall back on a running back group, that brings up so much pressure up against the uh the slinging unit.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_08: So I'm looking forward to seeing that because it'd be so great if we got Sir Roderick out there because that's a huge statement.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_08: Because that guy could probably run a train through them defensive boys in the U in U of H town.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I mean, we've seen the big playability from Sir Roderick.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_01: He can you blink and he's off 70 yards for a touchdown.
- 1:15:29SPEAKER_01: So uh hopefully we see one or two of those this game.
- 1:15:32SPEAKER_01: If not, Tosh Brooks and those guys, I think they can fill in just nicely.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_01: So let's get them involved early and keep them involved.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_01: Uh and then the third one, Tyler Shuck.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_01: It's easy.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm I'm excited to see how Tyler Shuck goes in his first game in a Red Raider uniform.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, I want to see him be accurate.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_01: I want to see him uh potentially take some shots down the field uh and not just a bunch of check downs, easy stuff.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, I want to see him be accurate, but also uh, you know, take take some shots, man.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_01: Let's do it.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_01: Let's see that arm that you're let's see that four-star ability that you were recruited to Oregon for.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_08: Look, I fell in love with Tyler Shuck this past week because the guy was giving all the love to Lubbock, Texas, Texas Tech University, because that's what I want most to have a player.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_08: I want I want them to really embrace West Texas and give all the love they can to the region and the university because and and that's what he's really given.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_08: Um, so I'm really excited to see that, and I think he's gonna bring in an edge that we haven't seen before because this guy is looking for an NFL career, and I really can't say the last time we saw a player that's really looking for that, you know.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_08: What I can't, I literally cannot name a player that was really looking for that.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_08: So um I'm really excited about that because it's he's gonna add an edge to him.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_08: Um, and I expect to put red Raiders in the NFL, so it's it's gonna be fun to see, especially Patrick Mahomes has thankfully set a precedent of quarterbacks in the NFL for Texas Tech, and I'm sure he's that's one of the reasons why he followed it.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_08: And I'm ready to see him prove it, I'm ready to see him lead a team, and I'm ready to see him bring us out of the dark ages because now's the time.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_01: Please let's do it.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_01: Do you have any more thoughts on Houston, the Cougars, or this weekend in general?
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_08: Yes, I I uh my thoughts are there's gonna be at least two extra degenerates creeping their lungs out at the game during defense.
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, uh buying overpriced uh beers at the concession stands.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_08: That's that's my take.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, that's what's gonna happen.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_01: That's absolutely if anything, this for you know, we're talking predictions and everything.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_01: That's not a prediction, that's what's going to happen.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_01: We can guarantee you that us two idiots are gonna be buying ten dollar beers at NRG.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, and and we're gonna have a hell of a time no matter what, man.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm excited to go see Ramblin at their tailgate, hang out with some people, meet some people, uh, potential listeners again.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, you know, come up to us and say, Hey, we're we would be hyped to you know meet y'all and and uh you know just interact and see everybody who listens to the podcast.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_08: If if y'all say that you recognize us, then we'll use that with our fiancés to the end of our lives.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_08: Be like, hey, y'all, y'all noticed us that one time at a tailgate for another podcast.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_01: No, we would play that, we would play that for the rest of our lives.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_08: But uh thank y'all thank y'all so much for sticking it with us because we've made it to the end of the offseason, and now it's finally time to hit the ground running.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_08: We don't have to pretend anymore.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_08: We actually get to react, and I'm ready for it.
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_01: Okay, so we have two things left on this episode.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_01: What this one score prediction.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_01: What do you got, Tristan?
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_01: For the Texas Tech Houston game.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_01: What is your score prediction?
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_08: I'm doing a very mathematical one.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_08: I'm doing halfys, I'm doing doubles, I'm doing 40 to 25.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_01: 40 to wow, okay.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_01: So you're thinking it's gonna be it's gonna be a pretty dang good game and a pretty good win for Texas Tech here.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm thinking in the later half of the game, we we the the Texas Tech talent takes off.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_08: So I'm looking forward to seeing in the third and fourth quarter us just like really putting some great plays together and beating out the talent on U of H.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_08: That's why I'm going with 20 uh with 4025.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_01: 4025, that's bold.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_01: Um, I I'm I'm not so uh close with that.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_01: I have 33-24 Texas Tech here.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_01: I have us winning by nine.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_01: Um, it's a I I think it'll be a pretty decent game for the most part, but I think we are gonna overcome them there at the end.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_01: Uh, win by a touchdown plus a little more um here against Houston.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_01: And you know, uh that's that's not saying that I don't think this Texas Tech team could potentially be very good and be much better than Houston this year.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_01: I just think first game, there's gonna be some jitters with some of these guys.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_01: So I think it may be uh, you know, the first few drives may not be necessarily what we want to see, but that's just college guys being college guys, you know.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_01: Uh first game of the year.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_08: I'm baking on the veterancy.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_08: That's what I'm going on.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_08: So I don't man.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_08: I'm uh it's gonna be a good game no matter what.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_08: I just think in the second half we're gonna really establish ourselves, and that's what I'm looking forward to.
- 1:20:25SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_01: So Tristan says 40-25.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_01: I say 33-24.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_01: We both have Texas Tech winning this game, uh, and that's our prediction.
- 1:20:33SPEAKER_01: So, oh man, it's fun to have a first game prediction right here going on, dude.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm giddy now.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_08: For sure, man.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_08: I'm just I'm ready to be amongst our fellow Red Raiders and just cheering the hell out of our boys.
- 1:20:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so we're hyped about it.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're gonna end off this pod like we always do with a song of the week, and we have a little bit of a theme for this song of the week.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_01: We were trying to find uh something for a theme uh to get y'all ready, and we ended up on we think Texas Tech is really gonna change uh really the perception of Texas Tech football with this season.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_01: So we're doing kind of a change song of the week, something that we just uh are are ready to to turn the knob on uh this these previous 10 years and get back to what we were here at Texas Tech.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_01: So, Tristan, what is your change song of the week?
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_08: Whenever you ask me for change, I immediately thought cover.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_08: And you know us, we love us some covers.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_08: So with my cover, I'm doing actually a really popular pop song, a guy we both like, a lot of people like is Post Malone.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_08: Um, a song covered, a post-malone song covered by a country band called the Cadillac Three, a pretty good national band.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_08: It's it's in the song that's covered by Post Malone is or or the postmalone song covered, I should say, is Circles by the Cadillac Three.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_08: And that's what I'm going change with because I think that's a jam of a song, and that's all I you know, that's what I'm going with.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_06: Run away, but we run in circles, run away, run away.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_01: I know, man.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_01: I'll have to check that one out.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_01: I didn't, I you know, a country spin.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_01: We've seen Post Malone sing a little country music.
- 1:22:24SPEAKER_01: I think that's what I thought that's what you were going with it, but uh this kind of the opposite of that.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_01: So you're really changing up the game here.
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_01: Bingo, man.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_08: It's a it I like that one.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_08: It's a great take on the song, it's very tasteful.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_08: It doesn't try to like over-country it.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_08: It's a really good uh country cover of circles.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_01: Very nice, very nice.
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_01: So mine's a little more literal.
- 1:22:43SPEAKER_01: Uh my song is called Changes by Tupac.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is a uh I haven't done a lot of a lot of rap.
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm I'm a big rap and hip-hop fan, even old school stuff, new school stuff, whatever.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, I haven't done a Tupac song yet, so I thought Changes by Tupac.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_01: It's one of my favorites by him.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_01: Uh, that's my song of the week is Changes.
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_07: They got a war on drugs, so the police can bother me.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_07: And I never did a crime, I have to do.
- 1:23:18SPEAKER_07: But now back with the black movie back to you.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_08: Well, you know me.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_08: I I know nothing of rap.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_08: So every time you bring it up, it's a new one for me.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_08: So I'm excited to hear it.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_01: Hey, man, it's a classic.
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_01: Tupac always is a classic.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_01: So uh that's it, man.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_01: That's it for our for our episode.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_01: It was a long one, but I hope we get you all prepared for this U of H game and for Texas Tech football this season.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_01: And I hope you're as optimistic as me and Tristan are because we really are.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_01: We uh, this is the highest I've been on Texas Tech football in I get probably since I've been a fan.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_01: So uh the talent's there and we're just ready to roll, we're ready to get into football season.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_08: That's the difference, is you'll usually get nothing but we're gonna win the national championship for me.
- 1:23:59SPEAKER_08: But with Steven, he's actually real, he'll tell you what he actually thinks.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_08: And if he thinks this is gonna be a good ass theme, I think I feel good about those chances.
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_01: So, no doubt.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_01: So, uh man, we're gonna end it off with some plugs.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_01: Like always, we appreciate y'all listening.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_01: Hope you stay with us throughout the entirety of the Texas Tech College football season and beyond.
- 1:24:20SPEAKER_01: But you can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_01: Tristan is at Tristy Mick.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_01: I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_01: Follow the pod on Twitter.
- 1:24:28SPEAKER_01: We're over 700 followers on Twitter now.
- 1:24:30SPEAKER_01: Uh, we appreciate all y'all for following and giving us uh, you know, that love on Twitter that is at talking tech pod.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_01: Uh, you can follow our songs of the week playlist.
- 1:24:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, we are gonna have that on Spotify and Apple Music.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_01: We'll post it on Twitter after every week.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_01: Um, and really we just appreciate all y'all.
- 1:24:49SPEAKER_01: We're ready to take on football season with y'all here on Talking Tech.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_01: Always Wreck Em Tech.
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_03: Wreck'em Tech.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_03: Uh Wow.
- 1:24:57SPEAKER_03: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_03: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but I also love West Texas, and I love Steven and Tristan.
- 1:25:12SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:25:16SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_02: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan thanks for coming out.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_04: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_04: Uh we fed off of it.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_04: I think it goes back and forth, but tremendous.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_04: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
