- 0:22SPEAKER_00: One of the most pervasive ideas in Western culture is the concept of finding your dreams.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Nobody knows for sure where this crazy idea came from.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: It's probably been around in some form for as long as there have been stories about heroes and their goals.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: The idea of finding your dreams goes something like this.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: The main purpose of your life, vocationally speaking, is to find your dream and go after it.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: The dream is what you're meant to do.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: It's granted by some otherworldly force or power.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: And your task, should you choose to accept it, is to keep seeking and searching, defeating obstacles and naysayers until your dream becomes a reality.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Now, there is some truth to this narrative.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Anybody who's achieved anything worthwhile has defeated obstacles and they've ignored the naysayers.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: But the main fault in this philosophy is that your dream is, quote unquote, out there somewhere.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And if you work hard enough and you seek it, you'll eventually find it.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: That's, I think, a bad philosophy.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Because the truth is that dreams are not found out there somewhere outside of yourself.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: A dream does not exist out there randomly somewhere in the universe.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: The whole idea of finding your dream is based on the idea that you are some kind of passive observer to your own life, and you're not really going to be fulfilled until you stumble upon your dream that's out there somewhere.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: The truth is that a dream doesn't exist anywhere outside of yourself.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: A dream is created from within.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: A lot of writers spend years or even decades passively waiting for their dreams to come true.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Maybe they'll get discovered by an agent or a publisher.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Maybe that book will magically get written.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Maybe somebody will hand them that opportunity they've been waiting for.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: But the truth is that's not how any of this stuff works.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Yes, people do get discovered sometimes and their dreams come true.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: But for the vast majority of us, our dreams become reality because we just stink and work for them.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: We did the work, we put in the years of effort to build our platform, our business, and our success one day at a time.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And this is just the cold hard truth of how things actually work.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: But I think it's the most liberating thing you could possibly hear.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Again, your dreams are not out there somewhere.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Your dreams are in here.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: They're in your mind and your heart.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: But it's up to you to do the work and to take those dreams from the realm of possibility into the realm of reality.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Do you find this truth frustrating or liberating?
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: And why or why not?
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Hey, as always, my friend, I would love to hear from you.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: You can shoot me an email at Kent at DailyRiderLife.com anytime, day or night, doesn't mean I'm going to answer it at night, of course.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Um, I do have a life and I have a business, and I'm ghostwriting books and all that stuff, so I don't always answer that very second, but I do try to be prompt in my replies.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: I would love to hear from you, and I would love to hear what your dream as a writer is.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: I love hearing from listeners of the podcast and people who are in my email list and friends and just people that I run across.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: So I would genuinely love to hear from you and hear about what your dream for your writing is.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: So again, feel free to shoot me an email, Kent at dailyriderlife.com.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: I would love to hear from you.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: All right, as always, thanks for listening, and I will see you next time.
