Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Jacksonville Jaguar fans, welcome into Duval.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: Daily, presented by GenJag.com.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Jordan Luda, thanks so much for being here Monday, March 9th, as we get ready to take on.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: The legal tampering period in the NFL kicks off at noon, recording this right now 1150.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_00]: The Jacksonville Jaguars announced they have resigned.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: Linebacker.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: Dennis Gardeck and Linebacker is a
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's an interesting term.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: And Dennis Gardeck is now speaking with the media.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_00]: So they're doing all this virtually, and the timing is all weird and stuff.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not on that call right now.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: I was just on the Quentin Morris call, but it's a hectic crazy day right now.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: But the Jaguars have recign linebacker Dennis Gardeck did expect him to be back a player that I valued
- 0:48[SPEAKER_00]: The Jaguar is clearly valued.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that this is going to be a big price point for Dennis Gardeck, just because he's a very specific player.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_00]: And the Jaguars within their defense, this Anthony Campanylei defense, they found a very specific role for him.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: Now there's some versatility within that role, but he's a very specific player.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think he did a great job for the Jaguars and he was like game playing dependent on how much he was actually going to play in a given game based on what the opponent was doing how the Jaguars were trying to attack and dictate that they're opponent all that different stuff we'll dive into it.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to have a lot of content here today already talked about the Buster Brown extension so the Jaguars now have brought back Quentin Morris DJ Dallas Keith Taylor
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: Matt Dickerson, Buster Brown, probably missing somebody.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: They've been very active in bringing back guys.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, Buster Brown is the biggest name from the group that they've brought back so far, but they've been bringing back a bunch of the guys that they brought in last year that really fit their system from a character and
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: teammate in the locker room on the practice field standpoint, but also a production profile standpoint.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: Dennis Gardeck, he played a hybrid edge slash off ball linebacker position kind of like a Sam linebacker in a lot of ways where he would drop into coverage at times, he would also blitz, he would also set the edge, he would do a lot of different things for them and he came over last year a little bit later on and I was excited about the signing when it happened.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: the reason he was available late into the summer last year was because he was coming off of an ACL and he's had two ACL tears in his career so obviously at 30 years old last year when he was signed there was a little bit of concern about age, wear and tear, all that stuff but it was a good low risk really no risk signing by the Jaguars for a guy that they knew
- 2:51[SPEAKER_00]: on the field like Liam Cohen had coached against him in LA.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_00]: He was in Arizona as whole career before that.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: Dennis Kardec was.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: And James Latzon had been on the other side of that with LA as well.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: And so they had seen this guy as a special teamer, as a pass rusher, as just a versatile,
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: player.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they called him the barbarian in Arizona.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: I believe that's what his nickname was.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, just plays like a banshee, plays like a barbarian, whatever you want to call it.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: And a guy who, again, was a really good tackler for the Jack Wars last year, was a good blitzer and past Russia.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like, he would blitz at times, but he would also legitimately just rush the
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: He had 165 run defense naps, 135 pass rush naps, 146 coverage naps.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: When he was out there on the field, offenses didn't know exactly what he was going to do.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: And that versatility within the Jaguar scheme and his ability to execute in all those phases, to me, was really good.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think that the weakest part of his game is coverage is what you would expect, right?
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: but he's also, again, if you need him to be a core force special teamer.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: Beyond those defensive snaps I mentioned, he had 84 kicker turn snaps, 102 kick coverage snaps, 25 turn snaps, 29 punt coverage snaps, 43, field goal block snaps.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he was doing it all.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_00]: So an extremely valuable piece for the Jack Wars in 2025 and they're going to be relying on him in 2026 as their top guy at that spot, again the pseudo off ball linebacker Ed Shedder spot.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think that they have other guys that they've brought in as well that can do that.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: I think you see Rob Dula isn't that mold?
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: You also talk about, they drafted Jalen McCloud last year who he was able to start practicing a little bit towards the end of the season, didn't really play, he was on injured reserve most of the year, Jalen McCloud was, but he'll be a factor in that position group as well.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: But guardack.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's your guy in that, and that mold for 2026, easily.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: And that was something the Jaguars needed to address in my opinion.
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: I thought that they would bring Dennis Gardeck back, and be watching him have our coverage.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: I thought he would be back for the team.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: But he's such an interesting guy.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: He's like,
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: Funnily enough, his most defensive snaps this past year was against the Cardinals.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: He had 53 defensive snaps.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: He had other games where he had 33, 33, 37 defensive snaps.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: But then there was also some games where he just wasn't as much in the game plan because of, again, specific schemes that opponents are running or what the Jag was trying to do to attack their opponent.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: He only had seven reps against the Bengals.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: He only had
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: 16 reps against the Colts in week 17, 18 against the Titans in week 18 in the wildcard around he had 23.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_00]: So like he's a high variance usage player on defense, but even when he's not playing defense for you he is making an impact positive impact on special teams and that's very valuable.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: So just a guy you really like to see
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: another one who likes so many of these guys that the Jaguars have resigned or extended over the last three, four, five months as Murray's trying to get in the camera here say hello.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: So many of those guys.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: undrafted free agents, late round picks, but they come to work, they do their job, and they're excellent at their job.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: Dennis Gardeck certainly fits in that mold.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited, he's back, but I am excited now that, you know, J.L.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: McCloud will have a chance to be on the practice field more with Dennis Gardeck and learn more from Dennis Gardeck.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: I really liked the J.L.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: McCloud pick, because he's a player who played off ball linebacker.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: played on the edge as well.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: So he can really learn a lot from Dennis Gardeck if he follows him.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_00]: And you see your Abdullah is a good player too.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: He will be going into the final year of his rookie deals.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know if he'll be in the future plans, but I think as a another guy who can play special teams,
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: and compete behind Dennis Gardeck, you see Rob Dula make sense in that role.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: So they've got a nice rotation of guys for that, if you want to call it Sam, if you want to call it hybrid edge slash off ball landbacker, whatever it is, they've got a really good group for that.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: Now, at linebacker, because this is a linebacker position, you're still looking at potentially losing dev and Lloyd.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: So if that is the case, do you replace him in free agency?
- 7:37[SPEAKER_00]: Do you add to the group in free agency?
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: and Jack Kaiser and another guy be competing.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: Do you wait till the draft?
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of different moving parts there.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: I still think the Jaguar's absolutely want to and need to upgrade their pass rush.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: They need more guys.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: They can really get after the quarterback.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: Dennis Gardeck does help in that regard.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: So that's a good thing.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: Buster Brown solidifies that corner back room.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: What's going to happen at running back with Travis CTN?
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: We're about to find out a lot of answers and this is things getting kicked off.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's 1159 as I'm finishing up this recording.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: So I do really appreciate y'all supporting the channel.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_00]: Keep it locked here.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: We'll keep you updated all day long.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: Have a good one.
