- 0:00Speaker 1: The defense carried. Day two a Patriots training camp. We're
- 0:02Speaker 1: here to break it down for you.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Let's do it. Welcome everybody to the.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Patriots Training Camp cast presented by New Balance. And we're
- 0:16Speaker 1: back day two. And the good news is my voice
- 0:19Speaker 1: is back to a little bit. Gonn power through this one.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I think we should be fine by tomorrow, Paul, But
- 0:23Speaker 1: thoughts in prayers. But let's start at the top a
- 0:26Speaker 1: little bit of housekeeping stuff. Team officially announced Gabe Acis
- 0:29Speaker 1: did sign. We had that report yesterday, so good news.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We know he's in the building from the picture, and
- 0:34Speaker 1: hopefully we see him on the field soon.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I'm sure he's doing some of the
- 0:38Speaker 2: rehab work and getting himself ready. And I think Evan,
- 0:41Speaker 2: I think you said on Saturday, you know that that
- 0:45Speaker 2: first padded practice, if we could somehow maybe see him
- 0:48Speaker 2: by that time, I think you can. You can play
- 0:50Speaker 2: catch up and get up to speed. But yeah, good sign.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Officially he's on board, So crisis averted now.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Anyway, Gonzol back out there too, fully participating.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been really kind of just surprised by how
- 1:04Speaker 3: much he is participating. And he looks like he's in
- 1:06Speaker 3: mid season form got his hands on the pass again
- 1:08Speaker 3: today undercut a route by Kaishan Boody almost picked it off.
- 1:11Speaker 3: So yesterday he had pretty tight coverage on that Aj
- 1:14Speaker 3: Brown in completion, today he almost has a pick. He
- 1:17Speaker 3: looks like he's having a ball out there too, Like
- 1:20Speaker 3: guy's got a smile all over his face everywhere he goes.
- 1:23Speaker 2: He does not look at all.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Like somebody who has disgruntled over a contract negotiation. So
- 1:29Speaker 3: that tells I think all of us have kind of
- 1:31Speaker 3: said the same thing, is are they closer than maybe
- 1:34Speaker 3: it appears? And this is I wonder coming down the
- 1:37Speaker 3: shoot sometime soon, you know, looking at like Wednesday is
- 1:40Speaker 3: the first off day of camp or something like that,
- 1:43Speaker 3: because he seems like he's having a great grand old
- 1:46Speaker 3: time out there for somebody that is supposed to be
- 1:48Speaker 3: in this like stalemate of a contract negotiating.
- 1:52Speaker 2: And that would be again like we just said with
- 1:54Speaker 2: achis that would be a good barometer that first off
- 1:57Speaker 2: day and Wednesday, because after that is Thursday, pass come
- 2:00Speaker 2: on and if there's no contract, I like to see
- 2:04Speaker 2: if maybe the mindset of the attitude changes a little bit.
- 2:06Speaker 2: But I couldn't agree more with everything Evin said, if
- 2:09Speaker 2: you're just watching practice, I almost wonder if it's already
- 2:12Speaker 2: a done deal and they or at least they're very close.
- 2:14Speaker 2: The sides are very close. It's signed.
- 2:16Speaker 1: A couple more housekeeping things in terms of attendance. Reggie Gilliam,
- 2:19Speaker 1: the fullback, was not in attendance. Jeremiah web as well.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You wonder if the team signing Acus, maybe that's connected.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Jeremiah Webb, who's down the receiving depth chart a little bit.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Morgan Moses had one of his days where you see
- 2:31Speaker 1: him for a little bit and then he goes and
- 2:32Speaker 1: does his own thing. I think we're used to that now,
- 2:35Speaker 1: but overall the day guys not uncommon to see the
- 2:39Speaker 1: defense have kind of carry the days early in practice. Yeah,
- 2:41Speaker 1: we heard from Kevin Byer, but you know, afterwards he said,
- 2:44Speaker 1: this is kind of usually how it goes. But you
- 2:46Speaker 1: mentioned a nice pass breakup by Gonzalez, also went from
- 2:49Speaker 1: Carlton Davis. Craig Woodson was in the mix as well
- 2:52Speaker 1: on a tip pass off at AJ Brown, So, you know,
- 2:54Speaker 1: just good sign from the defense. We've heard a lot
- 2:56Speaker 1: about wanting to make plays on the ball this year.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Forced turnovers. They were on the today, Yeah, no doubt
- 3:01Speaker 2: about it.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And Milan Williams got his hand on a pass to
- 3:03Speaker 3: the line of scrimmage too, So four or five pass
- 3:06Speaker 3: breakups in this practice A pick it was depends on
- 3:10Speaker 3: how you look at it, right, But always with these practices,
- 3:13Speaker 3: it's like, is this a slobby day for the offense
- 3:15Speaker 3: or was it a great day for the defense. I
- 3:17Speaker 3: think that you can look at it either way. The
- 3:19Speaker 3: beauty's in the eye of the beholder. But my view
- 3:22Speaker 3: on it, I thought Drake may was a little bit
- 3:24Speaker 3: inaccurate today. Sailed a couple of passes. We see that
- 3:27Speaker 3: from time to time with him, especially early on in
- 3:29Speaker 3: training camp when he's trying to get adjusted to some
- 3:32Speaker 3: new faces in the offense. You know, passes to AJ
- 3:36Speaker 3: Brown and Eli Reridan weren't exactly on target. So maybe
- 3:39Speaker 3: those guys are still working on things. I saw after
- 3:43Speaker 3: he threw the pick to Woodson AJ Brown and him
- 3:46Speaker 3: running the same route against the air and just kind
- 3:49Speaker 3: of doing it again against air. So that tells me
- 3:51Speaker 3: that maybe they're still trying to figure out landmarks and
- 3:54Speaker 3: where exactly depths and things like that. So those are
- 3:57Speaker 3: all early day things. I don't think any of us
- 4:00Speaker 3: concerned at all about Drake may one little, small, small,
- 4:04Speaker 3: small seed concern for me, though I haven't been dazzled
- 4:07Speaker 3: by Romeo Dobbs yet, And maybe that's a practice player
- 4:10Speaker 3: versus game player kind of thing.
- 4:12Speaker 2: He is a physical guy.
- 4:13Speaker 3: This isn't really that time of year, but Carlon Davis
- 4:16Speaker 3: was in his hip pocket on a pass breakup. You
- 4:18Speaker 3: just would like to see a little bit more separation there.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I would agree with Evan on that, And I thought
- 4:23Speaker 2: yesterday on Saturday, I thought there was some signs that
- 4:26Speaker 2: he looked more comfortable than what we had seen in
- 4:28Speaker 2: the spring. But today again I thought, basically what Evan said,
- 4:32Speaker 2: he looks a little, I don't want to say, a
- 4:34Speaker 2: step slow, but maybe still a little unsure of himself.
- 4:37Speaker 2: The play that we're talking about with Carlton Davis was
- 4:38Speaker 2: terrific coverage, but I also thought that maybe the receiver
- 4:41Speaker 2: could have done a little bit more to come back
- 4:43Speaker 2: to the ball or sort of body him out, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 2: make sure that he was able to make the catch.
- 4:47Speaker 2: But you know, I'm sure he's still learning the system
- 4:50Speaker 2: and getting comfortable and things like that. But I would
- 4:53Speaker 2: agree with Evan's overall assessment of dont Yeah, that's a
- 4:55Speaker 2: fair point.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Maybe he's playing a little bit slower because he's mentally
- 4:58Speaker 3: trying to go through the routes and things like that. Still,
- 5:00Speaker 3: and we talked to him yesterday and he mentioned that
- 5:03Speaker 3: this is a totally different system than the one he
- 5:05Speaker 3: was in in Green Bay West Coast offense with Matt Lafleur.
- 5:08Speaker 3: But you know, verbiage, route tree adjustments, all that type
- 5:13Speaker 3: of stuff is very, very different. So maybe he's still
- 5:16Speaker 3: kind of catching up on that.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about a positive though. At the wide
- 5:19Speaker 2: receiver position, which is Kaishan Boody.
- 5:21Speaker 1: We have a streak of two days of nice downfield
- 5:23Speaker 1: catches and his helmet pops off, but we.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Got to keep the helmet off. Yeah, I mean, I
- 5:27Speaker 2: don't know what's going on with the helmet, but yeah,
- 5:29Speaker 2: you know, and Bayer talked, you know, you know, afterwards
- 5:32Speaker 2: about him as well, and we know this is the
- 5:34Speaker 2: way Kevin Bayer talk. We know he's a deep threat,
- 5:37Speaker 2: we know we can get downfield. We saw the plays
- 5:39Speaker 2: that they made last year. Again, not a lot of
- 5:42Speaker 2: volume for Kashan Boody, but when he's called upon, he
- 5:44Speaker 2: generally delivers. Yeah, one more guys.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Just wanted to bring up guys and you mentioned him already, Evan,
- 5:48Speaker 1: and he hasn't really sparked with a play yet, but
- 5:50Speaker 1: Eli rare it and just feels like he's getting opportunities.
- 5:53Speaker 2: He's getting some run with the ones. It's a lot
- 5:54Speaker 2: of do with the depth.
- 5:56Speaker 1: You know, Paul's always has he done any He hasn't
- 5:57Speaker 1: really done anything yet, but I'd like to see him start.
- 6:00Speaker 2: With add to that, Tanner Tanner Tanner Arkins uh reps
- 6:07Speaker 2: with the with the regulars, So yeah, there's obviously opportunities
- 6:12Speaker 2: there Behind Hunter, Henry C. J. Deprie is a guy
- 6:15Speaker 2: who has some experience. He hasn't been on the practice
- 6:17Speaker 2: field yet. He's on pup so uh, I just made
- 6:21Speaker 2: note of Arkin being out there. It was a quick screen,
- 6:23Speaker 2: so obviously they had him out why they're looking to
- 6:25Speaker 2: get him in the blocking aspect that but he's a
- 6:27Speaker 2: bigger guy. Get my eye on him too.
- 6:29Speaker 1: He caught my eye to just coming across the formation
- 6:32Speaker 1: blocking somebody with I mean, it's it's probably close to
- 6:34Speaker 1: the edge as you can get with this kind of
- 6:36Speaker 1: like helmets and shells like, yeah, but you can see
- 6:38Speaker 1: he's got that kind of blocking fire that you know,
- 6:40Speaker 1: maybe that's an opportunity for him. With Julian Hill out,
- 6:43Speaker 1: even as a blocker, maybe he sneaks into the into
- 6:45Speaker 1: the roster.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean he turned on his tap at Illinois,
- 6:47Speaker 3: and this is an impact blocker. It's a guy that
- 6:50Speaker 3: really looked like an extra offensive lineman for that offense.
- 6:53Speaker 3: And that's how he was used, handing the dirt end
- 6:55Speaker 3: of the line of scrimmage, you know, digging out the
- 6:57Speaker 3: nickel Paul, digging out.
- 6:58Speaker 2: The nine technicals he saw him take like that. You know,
- 7:01Speaker 2: that's what he is. Now, you do.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Don't want to be too predictable, right like if eli
- 7:06Speaker 3: Ardan's on the field were passing, if Arkins on the
- 7:08Speaker 3: field were running.
- 7:09Speaker 2: But that's what he does, that's who he is. And
- 7:12Speaker 2: you lose a guy like Julian Hill.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Who was supposed to do that and fill that role.
- 7:16Speaker 3: The third tight end you're going to be blocking, You're
- 7:19Speaker 3: going to be on field goal protection, you're going to
- 7:20Speaker 3: be doing all that stuff. So maybe that blocking role
- 7:23Speaker 3: is there for Tanner. Arkin definitely at the top of
- 7:27Speaker 3: the list I would say of the udfas to maybe
- 7:29Speaker 3: make the roster here.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and one last thing real quick, Mike, before you
- 7:32Speaker 2: wrap it, I would say I did note that, you know,
- 7:35Speaker 2: Lomo playing right tackle with Mogan Moses certainly being monitored
- 7:39Speaker 2: today or on his program program, I didn't notice that
- 7:43Speaker 2: Marcus Bryant would come in when they wanted to use
- 7:45Speaker 2: the extra offensive lineman as the right tackle and Lomo
- 7:48Speaker 2: would stay as that sixth offensive lineman. So that's clearly
- 7:51Speaker 2: a role they have targeted for Lomo right out of
- 7:54Speaker 2: the shoot right well, when Moses comes back and it's
- 7:57Speaker 2: the right time and they have a regular starting five
- 7:58Speaker 2: in the offensive line, my guest today he was the
- 8:02Speaker 2: right tackle, but we still want to use him as
- 8:04Speaker 2: that extra offensive lineman because that's what he's going to
- 8:06Speaker 2: start the season game.
- 8:07Speaker 3: He's on the Nate Soulder plan right now. You know
- 8:09Speaker 3: he's going to play backup right tackle, sixth offensive lineman,
- 8:13Speaker 3: jumbo tight end, and if somebody gets hurt, obviously he'll play.
- 8:16Speaker 3: But you know that's what they're doing with him right now,
- 8:18Speaker 3: and I think that's the right approach. The six offensive
- 8:22Speaker 3: lineman role is getting bigger and bigger in the NFL now,
- 8:24Speaker 3: and that's still going to get him his feet wet
- 8:27Speaker 3: in the NFL as a rookie before they probably turn
- 8:30Speaker 3: it over to him in twenty twenty seven.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Yeah, one off the field thing was that low I
- 8:33Speaker 1: noticed Lomo and Cronover did like a hype lap right
- 8:36Speaker 1: as they broke up and stretching, Low and Crownover went
- 8:39Speaker 1: running around the field to make the blogs get in
- 8:40Speaker 1: the crowd. So it was a kind of a fun
- 8:42Speaker 1: moment there. But Day two in the books, good one
- 8:44Speaker 1: for the defense. We'll see if the offense can bounce
- 8:46Speaker 1: back in Day three.
