- 0:01Everything we do represents an action of will.
- 0:05Even inaction winds up being a willed action.
- 0:10We are provided a choice at each moment as to how to respond to
- 0:14circumstances, pressures, events, opportunities that lie
- 0:20before us. In many cases, however, we do
- 0:23not recognize the power of choice, as we feel compelled to
- 0:28respond in a particular way through instinct, habit or
- 0:34conditioned trained behaviour. If we observe closely the
- 0:39process of developing a habit and the influence of habits on
- 0:43our behaviour, we see that it starts with an observation, a
- 0:48connection that creates either an attraction or a repulsion in
- 0:53our vital being. As we choose our response, we
- 0:57create a neural pathway, a groove if you will, that makes
- 1:02it easier for the same response to arise in connection with a
- 1:06similar circumstance in the future.
- 1:09The more we actively choose, or at least passively permit this
- 1:15response, it develops into a more or less fixed action, and
- 1:20we have then a habitual pattern that begins to condition our
- 1:25action in the world. The more ingrained that set
- 1:28pattern is, the more effort of will is required to change it.
- 1:34Therefore, it is best to make positive choices at the
- 1:37beginning of the process, when the response is yet in its seed
- 1:42form, and before it becomes a fully grown habit.
- 1:48Just as a habit is created, it can be dissolved.
- 1:52We have programmed the habit into our being so that the mind
- 1:56accepts it, the vital nature is drawn to it, and the body
- 2:00expects it. The detailed operation of
- 2:04neurotransmitters, hormone release, and physical
- 2:08experiences of craving are the manner in which habits become
- 2:12embedded in the being. Yet all of these things can be
- 2:16changed through operation of will.
- 2:19The exertion of willpower is something that can be trained
- 2:23and systematically developed over time through repeated
- 2:27effort. While it may not fully succeed
- 2:30in immediately overcoming a deeply ingrained pattern, over
- 2:35time it succeeds in modifying the behaviour.
- 2:40Certain habits go on to become physical addictions.
- 2:44This can be an addiction to intoxicating beverages, drugs,
- 2:48or even the stimulation and gratification that can come to
- 2:52the vital being from exciting actions or from sexual activity,
- 2:58or from dominating behaviour such as bullying, or from
- 3:02excessive interaction with immersive video games or
- 3:06television programming. Whatever the form or source of
- 3:10the addiction, we are observing embedded deep grooves in the
- 3:15being that utilize neurotransmitters and hormone
- 3:19release as a mechanism to create deep physical reactions of need,
- 3:25and any attempt to change these addictions creates withdrawal
- 3:29symptoms. In this case the issue is the
- 3:33same once the addiction is in place, which started with an
- 3:38approval of the action the first time.
- 3:42It needs an effort of will combined with implementation of
- 3:46methodologies to systematically break down the addiction and
- 3:50move the body, life, mind to a new pathway forward.
- 3:56A simple example, we have a habit of taking a refreshment, a
- 4:01snack in the mid morning or mid afternoon between meals.
- 4:06We may start doing this as an exception, perhaps in a period
- 4:10of high exertion and the body requesting an energy boost.
- 4:15If we repeat this daily, it becomes a habit whether or not
- 4:20the body needs it. If we try to change this habit,
- 4:24we then can observe that there is a subtle pull or what we may
- 4:28call a physical craving that tells us that it is snack time.
- 4:33In some cases, we give in to the craving and go and obtain the
- 4:38expected refreshment. In other cases, however, we can
- 4:42use our will to reprogram this trained habit through
- 4:46substitution of a different action, such as an exercise
- 4:50program or a focus on some subject of intense interest, or
- 4:56through a type of conditioning, either through the use of reward
- 5:00or punishment, or through a type of education of the body.
- 5:04Life Mind complex to recognize that this snack is not required
- 5:09and is actually not helpful as it will tend to increase weight
- 5:14and decrease our health over time.
- 5:18Another method is to provide the refreshment but reduce the
- 5:21quantity or change the constituent foods such that the
- 5:26body's expectation is reduced and eventually can be
- 5:30eliminated. One way or another, with
- 5:34perseverance and patient exercise of the active will, the
- 5:38change can occur. Another example was related by
- 5:43an individual about his experience in monitoring and
- 5:46controlling the impulse of speech.
- 5:49He undertook a practice for a period of time to not speak
- 5:52socially. He had a pad and pen and wrote
- 5:55responses to all social inquiries during that time.
- 5:59However, he determined to speak if speech was necessary in
- 6:04relation to the specific work he was given to undertake.
- 6:09This practice forced him to observe how the impulse to
- 6:12speech arose within him and forced him to make variable
- 6:17choices depending on the circumstance under which speech
- 6:21either would or would not be required.
- 6:25He reported learning a great deal about the rising of
- 6:28impulses within the being generally and the use of
- 6:32willpower to guide and direct which impulses would be
- 6:35fulfilled and which would be denied.
- 6:39The mother observes quote. There is always a moment when
- 6:44everyone has self-control, and if one had not said yes once, if
- 6:50one had not taken the decision, one would not have done it.
- 6:55There is not one human being who is not the energy and capacity
- 6:59to resist something imposed upon him if he is left free to do so.
- 7:05People tell you I can't do otherwise.
- 7:08It is because in the depths of their heart they do not want to
- 7:12do otherwise. They have accepted to be the
- 7:15slaves of their vice. There is a moment when one
- 7:19accepts it. End Quote Reference Sri Orobindo
