Transcript
- 0:00America like I feel like catches like it sticks on to stuff
- 0:02that's a little less, I guess. I don't know if the serious is
- 0:05the right word, but America loves like party scene and
- 0:08things like that and where stuff can be taken lightly and not
- 0:11like so heavy all the time and not like black metal has to be
- 0:14serious every second of the day. But you know, it demands like a
- 0:17certain it demands a certain thing from people that are into
- 0:20it or like, you know, or the way you follow it.
- 0:22So like you can listen to some bands, but as far as being part
- 0:25like if you really get into it, it's not like the same as like,
- 0:27you know, say, if you're into kind of like what's going on
- 0:30death metal right now, like modern death metal or whatever
- 0:32you want to call it, stuff like a it's all, it's like there's a
- 0:34different thing than like some people getting into that and
- 0:36then actually being into black metal, I think.
- 0:44What's up everybody? It's Kefi of Ghostco mag.com.
- 0:47I'm joined once again by Christian of Necro Fire.
- 0:50How are you doing, man? Good man, how are you?
- 0:52I'm great. I joked with you last time when
- 0:54I met you in person a few years ago, I was like, I never know if
- 0:57I need to use your black metal name or your property name.
- 1:01Is also my middle name, so. Oh word, I didn't know that.
- 1:04That's super cool. We learned something about you
- 1:06today beside talking about this new album.
- 1:09Super stoked to catch up with you.
- 1:11You know a new album, Transcend Into Oblivion, is coming soon
- 1:15from Metal Blade, so maybe that's a good place to start.
- 1:19You have season a miss. Great label, did a great job
- 1:23with the early portion of your career.
- 1:25How did you guys, you know, get aligned with Metal Blade in the
- 1:281st place before we talk about the new music?
- 1:30Metal Blade had kind of been after us for a little while, or
- 1:33they just were, you know, like we're interested whenever you
- 1:35guys are available and then we end up splitting ways with
- 1:39Season of Mist and then it kind of just it all worked out.
- 1:42Thankfully, nice work. Yeah, metal blade.
- 1:44Still one of the greatest labels.
- 1:46Oh yeah, I mean, it's real. Like I'm like, like we're on
- 1:49metal blade. Like fuck.
- 1:50Right your your label mates with Cannibal Corpse and a Monomarth.
- 1:54It's wild and and a bunch of, I mean, you know, goat horror, so
- 1:58many killer bands. Slayer's original label.
- 2:01Yeah, I know. Yeah.
- 2:02Like Slayer and Merciful Fate are on this label.
- 2:04It's just crazy. I mean, yeah, it probably still
- 2:06is, but you know, it's like, yeah, the history of Metal Blade
- 2:09and just all that stuff in the lore is is, you know, it's nuts.
- 2:12Right on. I hope.
- 2:13I don't know if you have personally had a chance to, but
- 2:16I sincerely hope you and everybody else out there has a
- 2:18chance to go to the sort of metal museum, metal blade museum
- 2:22pop up in Vegas. Not yet, I need to go.
- 2:24So fun. Occasionally Brian does the walk
- 2:28and talk and curation, but it's all, you know, clearly put
- 2:32together by Brian and Michael and everybody over there, like
- 2:35with a lot of love. And they have lost some stuff
- 2:38over the years. There was the big earthquake in
- 2:4089 and some stuff was lost to antiquity.
- 2:42But there's so much. I mean, they have the original
- 2:46metal massacre tape. They have the kill the right the
- 2:49no life to leather demo in a lock box.
- 2:52Yeah, I was like, I was like some of that shit better if you
- 2:54have fucking life like a lock. Box, Yeah.
- 2:56Put Yeah. Paul's original drum kit from,
- 2:59you know, eating back to life is there.
- 3:02Like, it's insane, man. It's so insane.
- 3:05But yeah, man. Killer new album.
- 3:07I'm so proud of you and proud of the band for this record.
- 3:11You know, we've followed you guys for a long time and I feel
- 3:14like I've said this before, I feel like American metal heads
- 3:17have caught up to black metal finally.
- 3:20Like, you know, not in a pandering way, but like in a way
- 3:24where like the American black metal scene now has so many
- 3:27great bands that we are now on par with the rest of the world
- 3:31where they have been for decades.
- 3:33And fans tastes I think have matured too.
- 3:35And there's sort of not in a gatekeeper E way, like what
- 3:38isn't what isn't black metal. But I feel like Necra Fire is
- 3:40one of these bands on the front lines, sort of hold it, you
- 3:43know, waving that flag in the US, which I'm really happy
- 3:46about. Yeah, like there's more of US
- 3:48stuff that's going right now that's good and like people and
- 3:52like, besides good people are getting into.
- 3:54So it's nice to see because I mean, in the past there's always
- 3:56been American black metal bands except the reception.
- 3:59And then, you know, things like that are like they're, they're
- 4:01never around or like looped into the same groups, like at same
- 4:04time kind of thing, you know? So even though the United States
- 4:08is a big spot, the yeah, there's, there's a lot of good
- 4:11stuff going on, right? Now, yeah.
- 4:12And I think it's critical that, you know, like it's not seen as
- 4:16a gimmicky genre anymore. I think that for a long time
- 4:19other metal heads, whatever be a death metal mainstream fans,
- 4:24it's not like, oh, it's a fad or it's a thing to get into.
- 4:28Like it's a culture and A and a style and a legit way of, you
- 4:33know, a legit sub genre, not just kind of like a passing
- 4:36thing for people. I think that's.
- 4:37What some of the stuff like with black metal, I think is why a
- 4:40lot of people in America are always it doesn't catch on as
- 4:42much or like, you know, where it is where it is.
- 4:44It's like not America like I feel like catches like it sticks
- 4:47on to stuff. It's a little less, I guess.
- 4:49I don't know if the serious is the right word, but America
- 4:52loves like party scene and things like that and where stuff
- 4:55can be taken lightly and not like so heavy all the time and
- 4:58not like black metal has to be serious every second of the day.
- 5:01But you know, it demands like a certain it demands a certain
- 5:04thing from people that are into it or like you know, or a way
- 5:07you follow it. So like you can listen to some
- 5:09bands, but as far as being part like if you really get into it,
- 5:11it's not like the same as like, you know, say, if you're into
- 5:14kind of like what's going on in death metal right now, like
- 5:16modern death metal or whatever you want to call it, stuff like
- 5:18a it's, it's like there's a different thing than like some
- 5:21people getting into that and then actually being into black
- 5:23metal. I.
- 5:23Think right on. I don't think there's a Lorna
- 5:25Shore of true black metal, right, Which is which is fine.
- 5:29And I think Lorna Shore is great and I love their last record,
- 5:31but I also think like it's important that there isn't that
- 5:35kind of band right now. Like it's cool that a lot of
- 5:38people people are discovering Luna shore and getting like
- 5:40brain exploded by Will's vocals, but like we've also been like in
- 5:44the scene for a very long time. And like, that's not, you know,
- 5:47it's just he's so, you know, like so present and so same with
- 5:51Singh Singh, Risa Gabag, like in the in the culture of the moment
- 5:55of mainstream fans have discovered that band and that's
- 5:58awesome because I think that helps all or, you know, rising
- 6:02tide, all ships, etcetera. Cliche, but I think it's
- 6:05important that like the highest quality American black metal
- 6:08right now does not have a Lorna Shore.
- 6:10There is no, there's not a one to.
- 6:12One for that I mean, I don't I don't know if it actually would
- 6:15be possible for something because I don't feel like like
- 6:17we were saying like it's not like culturally there where I
- 6:19feel like it would cross in looks like some of that does,
- 6:21but that like, but something like Lorna shore getting big
- 6:24does I feel like expand stuff for more people, especially kids
- 6:28are exposed to more extreme music and it it works out in
- 6:30that way where it trickles down into other things or you know,
- 6:33like things like that. So I mean, I mean, overall,
- 6:35yeah, it's heavier bands becoming popular across the
- 6:38board is usually better for like everything.
- 6:41Right. And I'm not calling anybody out.
- 6:42Of course, we have huge fans of all those bands and I've
- 6:45interviewed those bands and like we had one of the first
- 6:47interviews with Will when he came in that band.
- 6:49So like, no shade. I'm just making the sort of a
- 6:51comparison. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 6:53Who may watch our channel that you know we.
- 6:56Are discussing much black metal stuff so anybody that's into
- 6:58this is probably like fucking Lorna Shore.
- 7:00Like what the fuck? So you don't?
- 7:01I mean, I wouldn't express it. Death metal bra.
- 7:05But yeah, man, fires of the apocalypse.
- 7:09I wanted to talk about the the like so the album construction,
- 7:12right is it seemed, you know, possibly a concept record
- 7:16definitely has like suites of songs and I feel like it opens
- 7:20up so strong, maybe like the strongest opening ever for the
- 7:24band. And I love this fires of the
- 7:25apocalypse, like my path. And actually, I think my
- 7:28favorite riff of the year is the next to last riff in light my
- 7:32path three, that real slow, groovy riff for whatever.
- 7:36It's just so killer and I love the transitions in and out of
- 7:40that section. But in general, like let's talk
- 7:42about the album as a whole. Is it a concept record like you?
- 7:45It's these. So did did you always have this
- 7:48in mind to write these sweets? Did it just come out that way?
- 7:51Let's let's start there. So it started off as I mean,
- 7:54this record was the first thing like really in like the the
- 7:57intent was to go in with a theme of the record and the records
- 8:01like at the records of the Luciferian dark night of the
- 8:03soul is the concept where and it's broken it like originally
- 8:06it was not broken into like movements or anything.
- 8:09And then somewhere along the line it did, which kind of like
- 8:13opened up to a bunch of different things.
- 8:15Like first I was like, hey, we're looking at it.
- 8:18I don't remember exactly how it came up.
- 8:19Like then it was then it became like, oh, OK, well the concept
- 8:22of the record is this so we can move it into like the first part
- 8:25is like awakening and then like like kind of thing and then
- 8:30ascension. So it was like, OK, so then it
- 8:32was like the record of moved into three parts.
- 8:35And then along with that, when we started in the middle, when
- 8:38we were middle recording, we did all the the interlude tracks,
- 8:41which interlude tracks end up being everything kind of like it
- 8:44was like an organic. It was like originally for some
- 8:47intent and then moved into organically where it was like
- 8:49third record that has three movements.
- 8:51It has three. So like that kind of stuff where
- 8:54like stuff happens and it's kind of like you start some stuff
- 8:56with something and then it becomes it's like magic happens
- 8:59and it all kind of flows together like that.
- 9:01But the concept worked really well to flow together like that.
- 9:04And I feel like the the flows are like it's really nice as one
- 9:08piece, like where I feel like the record is it's it's like
- 9:10meant to be listened to as one thing and kind of go together
- 9:13opposed to just being like, Hey, cool.
- 9:15I really like track 4 of this album from X band, you know,
- 9:19kind of thing. Or, you know, are you like a
- 9:20couple tracks? Like, I mean, you can not saying
- 9:23that that can't happen, but at the same time, I feel like this
- 9:25is it has like a continued feel throughout in a flow where it's
- 9:28like it's a feel like it's almost meant to be done like
- 9:31that. Right on.
- 9:31It definitely works and has a flow.
- 9:34I'm still a person that listens to whole albums.
- 9:36I love a whole album, not a piece, you know?
- 9:38I understand that. Like, you know, music is broken
- 9:41up into parts and commoditize, but I'm in town.
- 9:44I listen. I still listen to whole albums
- 9:46whenever possible. So I love listening to this
- 9:48thing. 3 is the magic number, by the way, of course, in so many
- 9:53ways. And I really appreciate that the
- 9:55lyrics were included with the record because I was able to one
- 9:58listen through. I just kind of read along and I
- 10:01do feel like these are some of your strongest lyrics ever.
- 10:03And, you know, not necessarily, I don't want to alarm anyone.
- 10:06Concept records and lyrics and concept themes.
- 10:08Not too flowery or necessarily poetic, but it's very
- 10:13meaningful. I found a lot of meaning and and
- 10:16phenomenal storytelling that. So like Congrats on that.
- 10:19Great job. And I didn't know if that was
- 10:21something you had in mind. There was just just a natural
- 10:24progression of your journey. A little bit of both in that
- 10:28it's like I was trying to step up stuff where it more was like
- 10:30there was personal stuff into it with like kind of like the
- 10:33spiritual stuff I usually kind of like or usually sing about
- 10:37and things like that. And more directly because I I
- 10:39usually on some other like previous albums and stuff like
- 10:42that. A lot of things I try to sing
- 10:43about, like I try to relate some kind of experience or if it's
- 10:46like, say about something, like I try to like at least
- 10:50experience something around it or see something has to do, you
- 10:52know, like, kind of dive into like the subject matter as as
- 10:55much as I can, depending on what it is.
- 10:57But this one was the first one where it was like, here's the
- 10:59concept. It's personal, but it's also
- 11:01spiritual. And this thing is it goes along
- 11:03with all the things I've done before.
- 11:04So like, yeah, I mean, it was like a natural thing, but also
- 11:07was it like it was intended to do that as well?
- 11:09Right on in terms of the writing and I I imagine that this the
- 11:13record label switch was also going on while you were, you
- 11:16know, culling tracks to put together on this, you know, did
- 11:20it kind of, you know, it's musically, you know, did you
- 11:23have some of these, you know, linchpin type tracks and then
- 11:27built around them? How did you, you know, do you
- 11:29save up like all guitar players? Do you just save up riffs and
- 11:32song parts and song? It depends on like, uh, usually
- 11:37because I'll like, I'll, I'll like save riffs and then some.
- 11:39Like usually for me, it's a point where it's like song time.
- 11:42So then I'll just start messing with the song and demoing stuff
- 11:46until like I, you know, like I'll do something put together
- 11:48and then I, I bounce it and send it to myself and jam it.
- 11:51And then I listen to it. I'm like Ant or I'm like, oh,
- 11:53this is good. OK, which change this.
- 11:55So I mean, like, basically I've just been working on stuff for a
- 11:58while and it hit the point with like me and everyone else, we
- 12:01have enough songs where I was like, OK, cool, let's look
- 12:03through all these things and it's like, all right, here we
- 12:05go. Right on.
- 12:05Do you do? Do you do the car test for the
- 12:07demos? Yeah, always.
- 12:09Because another thing with demos is it's like if I demo it and I
- 12:12want to hear it again, then I feel like it's we're going the
- 12:14right direction, you know? Right.
- 12:16If it makes you cringe, it's out.
- 12:17Yeah, if I'm just like this, Oh yeah.
- 12:19If it cringe, it's like this. What the fuck is this?
- 12:21Or if it's like all that's cool. But yeah, that's to be like, all
- 12:24right, that's not fucking talking about.
- 12:26Then it's like, all right, cool. This is just move into like the
- 12:28folder of like. All right, we're gonna mess with
- 12:30this. Right on.
- 12:31There's a lot of sort of that meme with the like the Chris
- 12:36Pratt in Parks and Rec. Like, oh, there's a lot of those
- 12:39parts on the guitars. There's a great guitar album and
- 12:42like, I'm so pumped for this. You know it's going to be it's
- 12:46already shaping up to be a killer year of extreme music.
- 12:49This is already like one of my favorite records, but there's so
- 12:52much good guitar shit on here just all across the board that I
- 12:56I'm just like the the guitar nerd to me.
- 12:58It's just like, so happy. Yeah, finally there was like
- 13:02some extra stuff in wanting to do and also tones, especially
- 13:05for like tremolo parts and stuff that we hadn't done before that
- 13:08I was more like, OK, but I really, we got on this one, you
- 13:11know, because like I was, I always wanted like with black
- 13:14metal to like be, of course it needs to be like dirty and like
- 13:18like decent amount of reverb to affect where it needs to go.
- 13:21But also there's like a couple other things I used where it
- 13:23kind of gives it like almost like a psychedelic feel to it.
- 13:25Like like slightly where it's not, I mean, not like where it's
- 13:28like you ate like 15 mushrooms. And here's how the guitar track
- 13:31sounds. But it's like you know enough
- 13:32where you're like, it's like where you're kind of like, OK,
- 13:34all right. It's it gives it like a weird
- 13:36hypnotic to movement in it where it's like you sometimes maybe
- 13:40know it's there, sometimes you don't.
- 13:41But like it gives it like life. Right on.
- 13:43It gave me some early Wolves in the Throne Room vibes, which I'm
- 13:47always a huge fan of and their guitar stuff.
- 13:50And, and I I feel like your band hasn't overdone these wide
- 13:54reaching experimental type guitar parts or even just
- 13:57straight up overdone the tremolo picking.
- 13:59Like a very, a very trophy, you know, mode of black metal.
- 14:03I don't think you've overdone it.
- 14:04So if you did it extra on this record, I think it's going to be
- 14:06noticeable and appreciated. Except I feel like we want more.
- 14:10I got some of that stuff would go more heavy metal or we'd like
- 14:13lean into, we'd lean into different aspects of black metal
- 14:15in the previous records. And then on this one we leaned
- 14:17more into like just especially with the aggression and the
- 14:20drums and things like where the parts are.
- 14:22I feel like it really, it's really it's a lot more
- 14:25aggressive and a lot more raw. Right on.
- 14:27Let's talk about this artwork for a second.
- 14:29Because if you've got an album that's got a concept, you need
- 14:31the artwork to sell it and to look cool on the layouts and
- 14:35shirts and things. I didn't know if you had a
- 14:38specific vision for this artwork First off before.
- 14:40Not Jose did the art and Jose does.
- 14:43He's done a couple different bands, but he's also like he
- 14:46does tons and tons of just like a cult literature, like non like
- 14:49so many different books and things.
- 14:51And I've always loved his art. So it was a real honor to have
- 14:53him do it. And I didn't give him any
- 14:55direction besides I was like, here is the concept of the
- 14:57record and what's it about? And like, I feel like it turned
- 14:59out. Perfect.
- 15:00I mean like. He's one of like, there's few
- 15:02like, you know, like there's a lot of good artists out there.
- 15:05But I feel like if especially with him, like I knew whatever
- 15:08he did would be the best. So I like and I knew exactly if
- 15:12I gave him a concept that was in this world that he would know
- 15:16where to go with it, like without question.
- 15:18I love that so much. It's tough.
- 15:19It's tough out there to, you know, I don't know if you have a
- 15:23take on this. I'm, I don't want to say I'm
- 15:25fully anti AI because that makes me sound like a boomer, but I'm
- 15:28definitely anti AI use for music.
- 15:31Obviously. Look, machine learning and AI
- 15:34has been part of our culture and stuff.
- 15:36I mean, like as far as AI, I think has its will have its like
- 15:40points and things like I would say more like medical and things
- 15:44like or whatever. Like is probably where it like
- 15:46the best part like would be used like in regular life in music.
- 15:49I feel like there's I guess I mean like bands that are AI is
- 15:52just kind of laughable art. That's AI is laughable as well.
- 15:55Some of the video stuff is here or there.
- 15:57It's still like has a look to it where it like it doesn't like it
- 16:00still doesn't look right. And it's you know, I mean, but I
- 16:04feel like it the most part, it lacks like a human feel, which
- 16:07you can really tell or especially feel.
- 16:09Maybe not in the pop world, because I feel like a lot of
- 16:11those things are already tuned enough and done almost in an AI
- 16:14fashion, like the way they're produced that like the this
- 16:18distinguishing is different. I mean, it's just like I feel
- 16:21like it kind of just defeats the whole purpose of it other than
- 16:23people that just want to like release music.
- 16:25It's like or they want to release music because it's going
- 16:28to make them popular or whatever.
- 16:29Like like, I mean, art music is all found and not like it's
- 16:33like, you know, like if you're doing it for other people and
- 16:35this and that, it's not really worth your time or anybody
- 16:38else's time anyway. So AI stuff just kind of in that
- 16:40range is just strange. And I understand like why people
- 16:43like old dudes are like this fucking album cover cost me 50
- 16:46bucks, but you know, like it's also like it looks like a $50
- 16:50album cover and you're a fucking legendary band.
- 16:52That's not like. Don't do it, you get what you
- 16:54pay for. And also I just think the over
- 16:56reliance and over hype of AI is antithetical to especially heavy
- 17:02music. It's not who we are, it's not
- 17:04what we do. And if you need to rush a thing
- 17:07out or cut a corner, rethink what you're doing.
- 17:10Everybody not from the new bands to the legends, just think, you
- 17:15know, move carefully. And when you over rely on AI,
- 17:18especially for art, you're taking a job away from someone.
- 17:21And I don't like that at. All because there's, I mean, on
- 17:24some of that, I feel like it's just, there's certain stuff
- 17:26like, you know, like when like I'm a big fan of like weird 90s
- 17:29digital art currently, like gateways and stuff, kind of
- 17:32stuff. And I'm all like, I mean, well,
- 17:34I'm sure those people think like a lot of people think,
- 17:36especially guys that used to do that think that's probably so
- 17:39atrocious or it's whatever. But so like, you know, like I
- 17:41feel like some of the things like you can do some digital
- 17:43things that are that look cool or like very stylistic of a time
- 17:47and things like that. But like, I feel like when you
- 17:49use AI just loses even stuff like that where it's like
- 17:52because AI doesn't look, I feel like cheesy.
- 17:54It just doesn't look right. You know, it's, it's yeah, it
- 17:58just, I mean, basically I think it just, it boils down to its
- 18:01losing human touch. I don't even know how to
- 18:02describe it, you know? No, that's right.
- 18:04And now I also think we're seeing a trend where even the
- 18:07artwork done by humans is starting to kind of like mirror
- 18:11AI in a weird lawnmower man type of way that I don't love
- 18:15because. There's people like, I mean, AI
- 18:17stuff is going to be like more prevalent like as whatever goes,
- 18:21obviously, but and I'll sneak into like people watching fake
- 18:23videos of like stuff that doesn't exist to make the world
- 18:26more insane and believing the real, except we won't be able to
- 18:30tell. But this stuff, I mean, but
- 18:32people, there's so much of the AI stuff out there because it's
- 18:34easy just to do. Like people can just crank some
- 18:36stuff out and then people think that's the way it is.
- 18:38It's like the way people look on Instagram with filters, and then
- 18:41people are trying to start looking like that because that's
- 18:43how they think they're supposed to look, you know, like
- 18:45culturally or like, you know, or stuff like that.
- 18:47Right on. Sorry to Boomer sidetrack there.
- 18:50So the album comes out February 27th.
- 18:53What's going? You got a lot of touring, Heroes
- 18:57Festival, of course. What's going on?
- 19:00We're doing like a we're doing a big show after the record comes
- 19:02out with Acid Bath and Obituary and High On Fire here working on
- 19:06some tours for America. Nothing is like is finished yet
- 19:10to like talk about or whatever. We're going to Europe in October
- 19:13or September, which still can't talk about either, but that's
- 19:15still happening. And then we're playing like
- 19:16Maryland Death Fest and we're playing San Luis Metal Festival
- 19:19in Mexico, which would be fucking insane.
- 19:21So but those are like the three shows we have.
- 19:23They're actually announced, I guess would be the right word
- 19:26for it. Amazing and another amazing
- 19:28Hell's Heroes lineup coming up. Very proud of you.
- 19:31With that we've we've been following that for a long time.
- 19:35Who you especially excited to see and play with this year?
- 19:38The blood fire death should be. I mean I saw it before and it
- 19:40was amazing so I'm really stoked to see that again.
- 19:42That enslave sets can be amazing loudness.
- 19:46Excited to see one and 9. Is that actually seen them play
- 19:48before? That new record down is really
- 19:50good. There's what else is on there at
- 19:52Sanctuary set should be rad because they're playing like the
- 19:54old set on here I think. I mean it's gonna be good fast.
- 19:57I'm excited. Right on Sanctuary.
- 19:59I think they've been quiet until this year for a couple of years,
- 20:01so yeah. They, they went like they were,
- 20:03they canceled a bunch of stuff a couple years ago and then now
- 20:06they're they see me back like they're playing some stuff in
- 20:08Europe, they're playing like hell zeros and a couple things
- 20:10in the state so. Fantastic, uh, Christian man,
- 20:12always a pleasure to chop it up with you.
- 20:14Congratulations on the Transcend into Oblivion coming out on
- 20:18Metal Blade Records February 27th.
- 20:20Always a pleasure my dude. I'll catch up with you on tour
- 20:23or somewhere else in the world. Soon, I'll do you soon for sure.
