- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 9th of
- 0:16January and I'm delighted that you have brought me into your
- 0:20day so that you and I can continue this epic story.
- 0:24And boy, yesterday's chapter was epic not only in its scope and
- 0:29what it represented and brought to fulfilment, but it was a long
- 0:33one too. And what is fascinating is that
- 0:36these writings are so uncommon, so uncharacteristic of the
- 0:41writings of the ancient Near East, where most of the writings
- 0:44were just lauding the powerful kings of those lands.
- 0:48And we see yesterday that long prayer where Solomon lowers
- 0:53himself and raises God up. And then today we see the follow
- 0:57up where God responds. And then it talks about the
- 1:00achievements of Solomon. And that is just a fraction, a
- 1:03fraction of the length of the author's attention on God's
- 1:07greatness. Very, very unusual for writing
- 1:09of that time. But this is an unusual book, and
- 1:13it is an unusual God that we serve because he keeps on
- 1:17subverting what we think he would be doing or should be
- 1:20doing or could be doing. So, friends, I hope you're going
- 1:23well. And I hope that with me you can
- 1:25settle in and you can hear how God responds to such a beautiful
- 1:29prayer and then how Solomon continues to live in this
- 1:32incredible blessing as we read together.
- 1:35First Kings Chapter 9. So Solomon finished building the
- 1:48temple of the Lord as well as the royal palace.
- 1:52He completed everything he had planned to do.
- 1:55Then the Lord appeared to Solomon a second time, as he had
- 1:58done before at Gibeon. The Lord said to him, I have
- 2:02heard your prayer and your petition.
- 2:05I have set this temple apart to be holy.
- 2:09This place you have built, where my name will be honoured
- 2:11forever, I will always watch over it, for it is dear to my
- 2:16heart. As for you, if you will follow
- 2:19me with integrity and godliness, as David your father did,
- 2:23obeying all my commands, decrees and regulations, then I will
- 2:28establish the throne of your dynasty over Israel forever.
- 2:33For I made this promise to your father David.
- 2:36One of your descendants will always sit on the throne of
- 2:39Israel. But if you or your descendants
- 2:42abandoned me and disobey the commands and decrees I have
- 2:46given you, and if you serve and worship other gods, then I will
- 2:51uproot Israel from this land that I have given them.
- 2:55I will reject this temple that I have made wholly to honour my
- 2:58name. I will make Israel an object of
- 3:01mockery and ridicule among the nations.
- 3:04And though this temple is impressive now, all who pass by
- 3:08will be appalled and will gasp in horror.
- 3:11They will ask why did the Lord do such terrible things to this
- 3:15land and to this temple? And the answer will be because
- 3:19his people abandoned the Lord their God who brought their
- 3:23ancestors out of Egypt, and they worshipped other gods instead
- 3:27and bowed down to them. That is why the Lord brought all
- 3:32these disasters on them. It took Solomon 20 years to
- 3:37build the Lord's temple and his own royal palace.
- 3:41At the end of that time, he gave 20 towns in the land of Galilee
- 3:45to King Haram of Tyre. Haram had previously provided
- 3:49all the cedar and Cypress timber and gold that Solomon had
- 3:52requested. But when Haram came from Tyre to
- 3:56see the town Solomon had given him, he was not at all pleased
- 4:00with them. What kind of towns are these, my
- 4:03brother? He asked.
- 4:05So Haram called that area Kabul, which means worthless as it is
- 4:11still known today. Nevertheless, Haram paid Solomon
- 4:159000 lbs of gold. This is the account of the
- 4:19forced labour that King Solomon conscripted to build the Lord's
- 4:23Temple, the Royal Palace, the supporting terraces, the wall of
- 4:27Jerusalem and the cities of Hazor, Megadot and Gessa.
- 4:31Pharaoh, the King of Egypt, had attacked and captured Gessa,
- 4:35killing the Canaanite population and burning it down.
- 4:38He gave the city to his daughter as a wedding gift when she
- 4:41married Solomon. So Solomon rebuilt the city of
- 4:44Gazza. He also built up the towns of
- 4:46Lower Beth, Horan, Bailarth and Tamar in the wilderness.
- 4:50Within his land, he built towns as supply centres and
- 4:54constructed towns where his Chariots and horses could be
- 4:57stationed. He built everything he desired
- 5:00in Jerusalem and Lebanon and throughout his entire realm.
- 5:05There were still some people living in the land who were not
- 5:08Israelites, including Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites
- 5:13and Jebusites. These were descendants of the
- 5:16nations whom the people of Israel had not completely
- 5:19destroyed, so Solomon conscripted them as slaves, and
- 5:24they serve as forced labour to this day.
- 5:26But Solomon did not conscript any of the Israelites for forced
- 5:30labour. Instead, he assigned them to
- 5:32serve as fighting men, government officials, officers
- 5:36and captains in his army, commanders of his Chariots, and
- 5:39charioteers. Solomon appointed 550 of them to
- 5:44supervise the people working on his various projects.
- 5:48Solomon moved his wife, Pharaoh's daughter, from the
- 5:51city of David to the new palace he had built for her.
- 5:55Then he constructed the supporting terraces.
- 5:58Three times each year, Solomon presented burnt offerings and
- 6:02peace offerings on the altar he had built for the Lord.
- 6:05He also burned incense to the Lord, and so he finished the
- 6:09work of building the temple. King Solomon also built a fleet
- 6:13of ships at Eziongeba, at a port near Elath in the land of Edom
- 6:18along the shore of the Red Sea. Haram sent experienced crews of
- 6:23sailors to sail the ships with Solomon's men.
- 6:26They sailed to OFA and brought back to Solomon some 16 tonnes
- 6:31of gold. Our Lord, we hear through this
- 6:42reading of your great desire for your people to remain true to
- 6:46you. Lord, I pray that You would
- 6:49continue to shape our hearts, continue to give us the fruits
- 6:54of Your Spirit so that we can grow more and more like Jesus
- 6:58every day, and that we might continue to bring Your Kingdom
- 7:03to be a reality here around us in our lives as You would want
- 7:07it to be. We thank You that even before we
- 7:11turned to You, You reached out and saved us.
- 7:16You reached out across that incredible chasm that was
- 7:19between US and you. And through your love and
- 7:22through Jesus sacrifice, you have drawn us back to yourself
- 7:28so that we can have that precious relationship with you,
- 7:31our Maker, our Redeemer, and our God and our King.
- 7:37We just praise you and we thank you for all that you have done
- 7:39for us. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
