- 0:07We hope you enjoy the show. Hello and welcome to the long
- 0:15and short of it. The podcast where we discuss
- 0:18each of the games on the Metacritic top 100 list.
- 0:22My name is Lawrence and I'm joined by this is Dan.
- 0:25Welcome to the podcast, welcome back.
- 0:28We've had a little bit of a break little week off after
- 0:30persona, but we are refreshed and raring to go.
- 0:34You've been on a little holiday, haven't you?
- 0:37I have ya. Got back on Saturday.
- 0:41Had a lovely treat, North Korea, was it?
- 0:46Not this time. Maybe next time they I'm bad and
- 0:49of course course and where was it?
- 0:51You went into lovely Manchester Airport and lovely holiday to
- 0:56Manchester and all the trains were not running because trade
- 1:01strike, so had to pay for a lovely taxi from Manchester
- 1:06Airport to Lancaster. Lovely costing quite literally
- 1:10hundreds of power. Excellent.
- 1:13Yes. It's just what you need after
- 1:14advice holiday. But where did you go?
- 1:17I went to Austria. Bloody lovely.
- 1:20Yes, it was very nice. Yes.
- 1:22Well, excellent, but now we must come back.
- 1:25Yes, quite but at least you had a fun game to take away with
- 1:29you. Yes.
- 1:31See. See how that?
- 1:32That was a nice little segue. I did there was a good link.
- 1:34That was that was? I wasn't it.
- 1:36So without further Ado, we'll we'll discuss the game that you
- 1:40took away. With you to Austria this week.
- 1:43We are talking single game. I only took one guy.
- 1:45Only one game. You can't take more can only
- 1:47take one. Can't fit it in your bag.
- 1:49All right, just the one game and that one game was Tetris effect
- 1:53connected. So we've we've discussed this
- 1:57for a few weeks because I was absolutely outraged at the cost
- 2:00of this game and I still somewhat am outraged.
- 2:04Yeah, we had to pay for this but it was released in October 20,
- 2:0921 and Are two entries on to the Metacritic list for connected.
- 2:14There might be three actually but the two that I saw was the
- 2:17switch, which has a score of 94 and the PS5, which had a score
- 2:22of 93. So it was developed by monstars
- 2:27ink and resin are. And like we said released in
- 2:30October 20, 21. So firstly, what is your
- 2:35experience with Tetris effect or Tetris effect connected?
- 2:40Nothing with this version of Tetris, but I think anybody who
- 2:46played Gameboy as a child had Tetris, we had Tetris, we had a
- 2:54few other games Mario, Land, 1 and 2's.
- 2:57Oh dr. Maria canning.
- 2:59I didn't have dr. Mario actually still It's a
- 3:05shame that is it is maybe you can help.
- 3:08You can add that to your games on the list.
- 3:10When I get drunk, maybe that'd be nice, wouldn't it?
- 3:13Yeah. It's a Tetris was one of the
- 3:15games that I had on the Game Boy and I mean, Tetris is Tetris
- 3:19synonymous with games and it's really quite surprising that
- 3:25there is not another entry for Tetris on this list.
- 3:28I think we discussed in one of the episodes.
- 3:30How Tetris did in some form deserve to be here and Tetris
- 3:34Tetris, everyone knows Tetris, the, I believe it's the best
- 3:40selling franchise in terms of video games ever.
- 3:43Yeah, so for it, not to be represented on this list would
- 3:47have been a bit, a bit of a misstep.
- 3:50So I remember playing that game. It had before soundtracks,
- 3:56including the classic doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo,
- 3:59everyone's favorite? Yes.
- 4:01And yeah, the game Is undergone various iterations over the
- 4:07years but fundamentally is still Tetris.
- 4:10You still got your your five tournaments lose.
- 4:14Yeah, you five sorts of shapes block shapes that you've got?
- 4:18I think, I think it's five. And you are, I mean jumping
- 4:23ahead now. I know I'm not going to jump
- 4:25ahead. Actually, I'm gonna, I'm gonna
- 4:25backtrack, I'm going to ask you what your experience with Tetris
- 4:29as a Series has very little I Didn't have the game boy,
- 4:35version, as you mentioned there, most people probably got
- 4:40particularly people, our age probably got their, their first
- 4:43exposure to Tetris on the Gameboy.
- 4:46And there has recently been a film that came out about how
- 4:50Tetris became what it is. But before that, there is a very
- 4:55good video on YouTube that I do urge people to watch.
- 4:58If you're interested by the gaming historian, which is a
- 5:02very, very good Channel. And he goes into a lot of depth
- 5:06about how the Japanese and the Americans managed to get the
- 5:11rights for Tetris, from from the Soviet Union.
- 5:14Because obviously, it was, it was 1986, I think in Russia and
- 5:21obviously communist Russia, at the time wasn't really about
- 5:25exporting its goods. So there's a really interesting
- 5:29story behind it, but Tetris is it was never Really a game that
- 5:34I played that much. And I'll be honest with you, I'm
- 5:37absolutely kak at Tetris, I'm so bad.
- 5:41I just something about it. I just can't, I struggle with it
- 5:45massively. So I've played Tetris and bits
- 5:49and Bobs before maybe on a few different consoles.
- 5:52May be playing it on my friends Game Boy.
- 5:54Perhaps, when I was younger and I agree with you Tetris, is the
- 5:58synonymous video game. And if aliens came to Earth, And
- 6:03said, right? Show us what your concept of
- 6:04gaming is the game that you would be best suited to show
- 6:07them. It wouldn't be Mario.
- 6:08It would be something like Tetris.
- 6:09So it is important. And as some people have
- 6:13described, the only perfect, yeah, video gets a perfect video
- 6:17game. I'd say that alongside maybe
- 6:19pong, but even so, Tetris is even more simple than that, to a
- 6:25big extent. But no, not much history or
- 6:29Tetris because I suck at it, so therefore, I don't enjoy it.
- 6:32Dang it. And yeah, this is my first time
- 6:36playing Tetris effect connected, which has got a few gimmicks
- 6:39that are a bit different from normal Tetris.
- 6:41Yeah, so why don't we talk a little bit about what you do in
- 6:46this game for anyone? That doesn't know what Tetris
- 6:48is. As Dan said, you have different
- 6:52shaped Tetra nomos. I struggle to say that word
- 6:57which are constantly falling from the sky and you have to
- 7:01arrange JH, the blocks for anyone that gets that reference,
- 7:06which I don't think I've ever sent to you.
- 7:08Either is a Tetris related video on the history of the USSR which
- 7:14is very funny about the man who arranges the blocks.
- 7:18But Tetris is a game where the blocks fall from the sky, you
- 7:21arrange them and you basically have to form complete lines.
- 7:26And once you do that, the line will disappear meaning that you
- 7:31can continue to build. But because the different shapes
- 7:34it can sometimes be difficult and it can get a bit
- 7:36overwhelming and you will then miss maybe a spot or two and a
- 7:39line. Meaning you can't clear it and
- 7:41it then turns into complete chaos.
- 7:43I say swear words and stop playing it for a bit.
- 7:46Is the main basis of Tetris. I mean anything to add there,
- 7:51the shapes are randomized and you're basically in a way trying
- 7:54to build a wall without any gaps in.
- 7:57And if you do manage to create a line without gaps, it will
- 8:01disappear. And you want to keep your blocks
- 8:04down. And if you, if your blocks get
- 8:06too high as you say it's game over.
- 8:09Yes. Quite so what's the gimmick
- 8:13here? Because tetris-like, we say, is
- 8:15Tetris 99% of people that have ever heard of a videogame.
- 8:19No of Tetris will know how Tetris works but what makes this
- 8:23one so special besides the look and the visuals and the sound,
- 8:26which we'll get onto a bit later.
- 8:29So to me, I may Maybe I'm Wrong. Maybe I misunderstood the
- 8:34gimmick here, but the gimmick to me is that you, you're racking
- 8:39up as score. You can get combos and various
- 8:41things, and once you finished a level, once you've you've
- 8:47eradicated, I think it's so on on the beginner difficulty,
- 8:51which I dropped it down to because this game is quite
- 8:53solid. I've got about probably thirty
- 8:57three percent of the way through and yeah, drop the difficulty.
- 9:01And it on the beginning. Difficulty, you have to
- 9:04eradicate, 36 Rose, I think it is or 34.
- 9:08And once you've done that, you are very quickly whisked off
- 9:14straight into another level and the score that you've built up
- 9:19from the first level will be carried over to the second.
- 9:22So, not only you trying to build a combo in the level that you're
- 9:27in, but you're also trying to chain together levels.
- 9:31Yes, and if you fail, you lose your score.
- 9:34You can start again from the level that you were wrong, but
- 9:36you lose your score. So it's all about getting a high
- 9:39score over, say four or five levels that are linked together.
- 9:46And there is very little in the way of loading between the
- 9:49levels. You are quite literally whisked
- 9:52from one level to the next. I don't know if that's the
- 9:56gimmick, you referring to know. So there is there is another
- 9:59gimmick in this game, which isn't in Normal.
- 10:01Trish. So usually it's the case because
- 10:03tetrarch Tetra nomos are only four blocks in length or height.
- 10:09You can only really ever knock out a line of for if, you know,
- 10:13if you do well in your perfect, however, this game brings in
- 10:17another Elements which is called The Zone.
- 10:20And I'd because it isn't really explain to you.
- 10:23The start, the game that I watched a few videos, it was
- 10:25only after I played it for an hour or so that I watched a few
- 10:28videos. I was like, oh, okay, I didn't
- 10:29realize that was a, that was an element.
- 10:31Out of it on the bottom left of the screen.
- 10:33You've got something called The Zone bar, which fills up as you
- 10:36knocked down lines and the gimmick.
- 10:39With this version of Tetris, is the fact that once you've got
- 10:42the Zone bar filled, you can then go into like a focus mode,
- 10:46which effectively stops time until your Zone bar runs out and
- 10:51you can then basically clear additional lines.
- 10:56So that once your Zone M empties.
- 11:01You saying, I've only cleared for tetrominoes, you can get it
- 11:04up to I think like 30 or 32 lines in one go.
- 11:09I never managed to do it because I'm not good enough at Tetris.
- 11:13I wasn't even aware of it so I don't know if there's a special
- 11:15button, I'm sure I built up the meter at some point.
- 11:17Yeah, you would have done this on it's either b or the
- 11:22triggers. I always get confused with the
- 11:23switch but yeah, that's how you do it and you go into the focus
- 11:27mode which from watching videos, like I managed to get it once.
- 11:31Even though my bar was only half full and I didn't take full
- 11:34advantage of it because again, I'm shocking at Tetris.
- 11:38But I mean seeing people that are good at Tetris playing this
- 11:42game on YouTube doing the stuff that I physically couldn't do is
- 11:46very satisfying to watch. And I think that anyone that is
- 11:49a Tetris head probably really like that element.
- 11:54The other element that you've got in this new version of
- 11:56Tetris is the multiplayer stuff and you can play with two,
- 11:58three, four people. And you can have a Zone bottom.
- 12:04Once you fill up, you each take it in turns to, you know, clear
- 12:06the lines. So there is a big element of
- 12:09multiplayer in this version of Tetris, which I think is quite
- 12:13cool because the, the last kind of version of Tetris, I remember
- 12:18that had a bit of a gimmick was Tetris 99 was very cool.
- 12:22Yeah. Which released on the switch,
- 12:24maybe two or three years ago, which was you playing Tetris
- 12:28with 99 other people. And as you can, Cleared lines.
- 12:31It would be thrown on someone else's screen until it was only
- 12:34two or one left. Just to rub salt in the wound.
- 12:37That was free. Yeah, it was free.
- 12:38Yeah, so there are a million versions of Tetris and, you
- 12:45know, this is one of the oldest Concept in terms of games on the
- 12:50list. Like I said, I think the
- 12:51original was released in 86 so it's back to the Ice Age it
- 12:56does, it does State back to the ice age when you Any footage
- 13:01that you watch of like Tetris founder, I've mentioned a few
- 13:04times, his name is Alexey pajitnov, he walks around in
- 13:09this suit and the design on the suit is obviously made of two
- 13:12truck Tetra Nemo's. I'll get used to saying that
- 13:15word soon, but yeah, there's so much history and there's so much
- 13:19background in Tetris and I even watched a video on YouTube of
- 13:25like the the number one Tetris player, or like the fastest
- 13:28Tetris player from when he was a kid.
- 13:30Is it mr. Blobby Be it was mr.
- 13:31Blobby and instead of Techtron ammos, it was blobs.
- 13:38So blocking most that blah. Yeah.
- 13:40Blobby mode getting into the blobs own sounds off.
- 13:46Yeah, it sounds awful. They are.
- 13:48You can you can imagine that but other than obviously watching
- 13:52mr. Blobby play it.
- 13:53I did also watch like a world record Champion, playing Tetris
- 13:58connected, and And watching him play was quite something, and he
- 14:04played it twice, he played it once on a controller on a PS4, I
- 14:08think before it came over to PS5 and then he played it again but
- 14:12in VR and amazingly in VR, he was even better and it was
- 14:17really interesting to watch, you know, I urge anyone to watch it
- 14:22but Tetris doesn't have a story. Tetris does have a plot Tetris
- 14:25Tetris as I keep saying? So, Can you please?
- 14:29King is Tetris effect connected fun?
- 14:32Yeah, I enjoyed. So I played through the, there's
- 14:37a journey mode. Yes, I'm applied through the
- 14:39Journey mode to the last level. We had on beginner difficulty,
- 14:43admittedly, we had to eradicate. I think my 90's and I got to
- 14:49like, 76 and gave up. Yeah, so I got a played this
- 14:54quite a lot and it was it's just a very enjoyable game to dip in
- 14:58and out. A out of it's quite a good
- 15:00palate cleanser. So if you're playing a big game
- 15:02or something just to go away and switch off and play a bit of
- 15:07Tetris. So yeah, I think to me I think
- 15:11it's really fun to play. Yeah, I'd agree with you.
- 15:14I, I find this game very frustrating but it's the kind of
- 15:21game that I can dip in and out of so that I don't really have
- 15:24games on my phone. I don't really play mobile
- 15:28games. Games are often the only one
- 15:30that I've got on my phone is Candy Crush.
- 15:32And the only reason that it's still on my phone is I'll
- 15:34occasionally jump into it when I've got like 10 minutes spare
- 15:39or it's a classic sitting on the toilet game, Candy Crush and
- 15:44I've got to like level I do 1900 might I might be into the 2000s.
- 15:49Now my save file has been going on for about seven years and
- 15:54Tetris. This version of Tetris, really
- 15:58makes me think of Candy Crush, because this isn't the kind of
- 16:01game. I can sit there for, you know, a
- 16:02good hour plowing time into. It's the kind of game that I can
- 16:05play, until I lose my temper with its top and then I'll go
- 16:08back. Maybe half an hour later.
- 16:10And although, it's frustrating, there is something, obviously
- 16:13quite fun about it because it kept me.
- 16:15Going back, anyone that's listening to this podcast for
- 16:17any amount of time. Will know that if I think a
- 16:21games rubbish or something or I'm not enjoying it, it's very
- 16:24easy for me to fall off. And just blah.
- 16:26I just can't. And this game did keep me coming
- 16:30back, which, you know, shows that there is something to that
- 16:34small games like this on the podcast, where you want to just
- 16:39put in the bare minimum, and not the Pac-Man game that we did for
- 16:42you. Yeah.
- 16:43And this one, I wish they were more normal levels, but they
- 16:49kind of ran out. And I got to this tough level at
- 16:51the end. But I wish there were more
- 16:53normal levels so I could play more of it without Having to
- 16:57replay the same levels. So, yeah, that's gotta be a
- 16:59complement to this game. Yeah, 100%.
- 17:03So, what there's no favorite move, because it is Tetris, but
- 17:09what is your favorite element t-shape?
- 17:11You like the T-shirt? I was personally a fan of just a
- 17:14Long Tall one which do ya around to all the other ones that
- 17:18you're always waiting for, you've always got your always
- 17:23get your four lines together and you try and space it.
- 17:25So, You're waiting for a yeah. A line.
- 17:27And it never comes up a bloody shirt.
- 17:30Designs to come left less often than all the other ones selfish
- 17:34really. But what's your favorite
- 17:35elements of this game? I like the fact that you can,
- 17:38I'm sure this is in many other Tetris games, but I like the
- 17:41fact that you can store a piece. Yeah, it is.
- 17:45So you can say if you've got that line and it comes too early
- 17:49and you're not ready for it, you can store it.
- 17:51So I always had a line in back up and ready to you.
- 17:55So when I needed it I just think that adds another layer to it,
- 17:58doesn't it? Yeah.
- 17:59Then the speed makes things quite interesting.
- 18:03So in my experience it could go higher than this.
- 18:06It went up to ten speed, and at that point, you need to be
- 18:11looking ahead. You can't be looking at the
- 18:14block that's going down. You need to be looking at the
- 18:15next block before it comes and planning ahead, because it moves
- 18:18so fast that if you don't do that.
- 18:21So Tetris, although it's super simple.
- 18:25And really understandable to just about anyone.
- 18:29There's a steep learning the layers to it.
- 18:32Yeah. And those people that that
- 18:34Master it like you say it's fascinating to watch and you can
- 18:39see how much stress do this game has.
- 18:42Yes, yeah, that's cool. Yeah.
- 18:45I mean, my favorite element of this game, it doesn't really
- 18:49come down to the gameplay and I think that, you know, there's
- 18:52own feature on, it is quite cool.
- 18:55I think the Multiplayer function is quite cool if I'd have played
- 18:58multiplayer at all, but I didn't want to embarrass myself that
- 19:01heavily that my favorite feature of this game is the, the visuals
- 19:06and the sound. Yeah, it's awesome.
- 19:08And it really stands out and that brings me on to our next
- 19:11section, which is the look in the sound.
- 19:13Can you explain this look to me and what this sound is?
- 19:19Dubstep, drugs and dubstep on LSD.
- 19:24So, this game is really. Built designed to basically
- 19:31Hammer your senses and what I mean by that visually it's very,
- 19:37very striking. It's colorful.
- 19:39It's sharp its Punchy and it has these backdrops to each level.
- 19:44It could be a desert or it could be the sky or a deep ocean
- 19:49backdrop. Yeah.
- 19:51And it's a theme and it doesn't necessarily add to what you're
- 19:56doing, but But it just is really refreshing.
- 20:00It feels it just looks so good and the blocks themselves will
- 20:05change depending on the level that you're in an accompanying
- 20:08that you've got. As you say, you've got the
- 20:10audio, you've got a great great soundtrack.
- 20:16Yeah, of original songs I believe he hasn't Each each
- 20:22theme matches, the level that you're in.
- 20:24So if you're in, there's a level, which is sort of Native
- 20:28American, and there's this Native American theme in the
- 20:31background. It sounds like Tarak, and it's
- 20:34just cool. And it's, and what's great about
- 20:37it is that this game moves along with you.
- 20:42So the tempo of the music ramps up.
- 20:47When you're placing block, yes, you're you're clearing row.
- 20:50Once you've done like 10 lines or whatever, the music will amp
- 20:52up a little bit and then once you get to 20 at a peeve and
- 20:55more and like the baby tiny place a block.
- 20:58There's that there's a beats that.
- 20:59Yeah. Part of the soundtracks, it's
- 21:01like you're creating the soundtrack and a company that
- 21:04further you've got the switches Joy con vibration.
- 21:10I can't remember what they call it.
- 21:12I can't remember. But yeah, basically it was it's
- 21:15it's better than a lot of other vibration and it may not be the
- 21:19haptic. Feedback that the PS5 has.
- 21:21No, I imagine that would be cool to play with this game but it's
- 21:24a step above what you imagined Rumble to be and the switch can
- 21:31literally be vibrating in your hands.
- 21:34And then your you've got the Beats as you're laying down the
- 21:37blocks and you've got the music, which is up and down and speeds
- 21:40up when the level speeds up and slows down when the level speed
- 21:44slows down. So you you've kind of got this
- 21:46these calm moments and these really high Tempo moments.
- 21:50And then you've got the the visuals which kind of Pop
- 21:54alongside the beat and it's just this blend of sensory overload
- 22:00and yes, it's great. That's that's the best way I can
- 22:03describe it. Yeah, it is.
- 22:05I think that's a good word for a century overload and I can
- 22:08understand why the switch version has one point more.
- 22:11Like one Higher Metacritic Point than the PS5 does, is this game
- 22:15is made for switch like made for headphones as well?
- 22:18Yes it is. I do to use.
- 22:19Yeah. Yeah, they encourage game and
- 22:22particularly playing this game on the OLED version of the
- 22:24switch. Yeah, it was a real visual
- 22:27visual treat. I wasn't expecting it.
- 22:30Completely unexpected. Yeah, it was you and me talked
- 22:34about it a bit and we're alert it's it's Tetris.
- 22:38You know what what what can we expect?
- 22:40I think both of us were I wasn't too surprised by it because I
- 22:44knew what it was going inside. Watched a few videos on it in
- 22:46the past but It was definitely a nice not surprise for me but it
- 22:54was a nice realization that this was actually a pretty decent
- 22:57game that my biggest gripe with it and it was my biggest gripe
- 23:02for it. I've been going on for weeks as
- 23:03the price this. Yeah this game on the switch.
- 23:08I think it cost me 35 quid same and that's That's not cheap
- 23:15expensive. Yeah, I'm from 20 21.
- 23:18That is not that long obviously depending on how much time you
- 23:24put in. Yeah.
- 23:26Yeah, it it feels like a nice product.
- 23:30It feels like it's got a lot of Polish.
- 23:32Yes. But yeah the price I mean I'd
- 23:35have been much happier. I I would have felt happy with
- 23:39the final product if it costs a £20 yes, absolutely. 20 pounds.
- 23:45I think would have been a fair would have been a fair shell on
- 23:49it because 35 quid for this game.
- 23:51It's too much. Yeah, but alas, the cost is, of
- 23:55course, And it doesn't ever seem to go on sale, which was the
- 23:58another, the other irritating things we have this off for a
- 24:00while a few times but yeah, it hasn't gone on sale for.
- 24:04Yeah, it's rare. I'm so the question of the week
- 24:08today, what I wanted to kind of ask is what else do you think
- 24:14that Tetris can do? Like, we mentioned, you've got
- 24:16the original Tetris, you've got Tetris 99, you've got this,
- 24:20there are probably other version of Tetris, that you owe me,
- 24:22don't know about, but what else do you think Tetris can do?
- 24:24Because I don't think Tetris is in a fight to stay relevant
- 24:28because Tetris will always be there as what it is.
- 24:31And it doesn't need to reinvent itself every you know, few years
- 24:35because it's just constant. But what do you think Tetris
- 24:39could do? That would be interesting.
- 24:44I didn't think Tetris is ever going to be what it once was.
- 24:47Which knows that cutting-edge game that everyone was clamoring
- 24:53to play. It's never going to be that
- 24:55again. No, I think we have to accept
- 24:57that I think. Tetris effect connected.
- 25:04Really does a good job of modernizing.
- 25:06Tetris and probably does a good job of showing newer players why
- 25:11it was relevant to begin with with that coat of paint.
- 25:16That fantastic. Soundtrack the soundtrack which
- 25:18makes me want to go and play it. Yeah, that's how good the
- 25:21soundtrack is. It's honestly, it's brilliant.
- 25:27So they really did a good job of modernizing it and making it
- 25:30feel like a fresh. Product and you compared it to
- 25:37Pac-Man. And I think that's a really
- 25:39interesting comparison because Pac-Man didn't have nearly the
- 25:42same effect on me as this did know.
- 25:45And and that version that man was somewhat similar, wasn't it?
- 25:48Like, you know yeah. Bright neon lights, all that
- 25:50kind of stuff and a similar similar lineage between these.
- 25:53Yeah, legendary games but to me, Tetris effect connected
- 25:58connected a lot more with me as for what it can do in the
- 26:03future. Short of Another Time, 3D Tetris
- 26:08and things like that before and short of adding new shapes, I
- 26:11don't really know. My answer was going to be re
- 26:15focusing on making 3D Tetris good because from what I
- 26:18understand, feet 3D Tetris is dire really.
- 26:23So I don't know if that is the case, but I would say that if
- 26:26they want to reinvent it further or, you know, tweak it then
- 26:30focus on 3D Tetris and do something with VR.
- 26:34Because 3D textures and VR because I know there was a 3D
- 26:38version of Tetris on the virtual boy back in the 90s and it
- 26:42looked like a migraine, it was just so different answer.
- 26:49Okay. So, when you think about Tetris
- 26:54is sort of a geometric puzzle game, yes.
- 26:57When you think about other puzzle games and you think about
- 27:00games that have puzzle elements, what do they do to keep it fresh
- 27:03between games? They change the scenario.
- 27:06They they change the setting or they changed the characters that
- 27:12portal think important? Yeah, well so yeah, that's a
- 27:16good example portal. So maybe what you do to make
- 27:20Tetris. and again as you change the format you change maybe
- 27:25you're trying to make a very wide row or something and or
- 27:30maybe you're trying to Make a row, which is a t-shape what?
- 27:35Like what I mean is, maybe the stage isn't shaped like a
- 27:38rectangle may be the shape of the stage is different and due
- 27:42to that every stage would be a different challenge.
- 27:47I know that puzzle games in the past have dabbled with adding
- 27:51story elements between things and yep, I think that can be
- 27:54quite interesting if they do it, right?
- 27:56If they do a story, that's thematically relevant to Tetris,
- 28:01which I don't know what is Is maybe something involving
- 28:06Russia? I don't know.
- 28:08I mean it's not Tetris related but when we get to yours and
- 28:12mine mine in your 15 games, I've got a shape based puzzle game
- 28:20that will be playing called Thomas Was Alone and that is
- 28:24effectively. Like I said, it's not Tetris,
- 28:26it's a platformer but that is what you do when you give a
- 28:29storyline to shapes and characters to shapes And it's
- 28:34it's a really lovely little game.
- 28:37I don't know how you could do that with Tetris, but I think
- 28:39you raise a good point, you know, if you could do something
- 28:42along those lines with that, I think it would not reinvent.
- 28:44Its like we say that wouldn't happen but it would give it a
- 28:48different perspective. I guess if you can change the
- 28:51challenge without just increasing the speed, that would
- 28:55be interesting. Yeah, I feel like a lot of the
- 28:59difficulty around Tetris. Is around the speed that it goes
- 29:02at. Yeah.
- 29:03And if you take that element away or you change the
- 29:07parameters of that, I think you've got some interesting
- 29:12possibilities. Whether they'll do that, I don't
- 29:13know. Yeah.
- 29:16But you think about any puzzle game, they what they do is they
- 29:19they all to some aspects and they change the challenge.
- 29:23I think that would be the answer here.
- 29:25As I said, maybe it's changing the shape of the stages.
- 29:27I'm sure they might have done that in the past.
- 29:29This is no ring. The cetera.
- 29:31So many, yeah, there are so many Tetris games that I've not even,
- 29:37I'm not even aware of probably 95% of them.
- 29:41So it's an interesting question and I think it's probably the
- 29:46question that all puzzle games have to face.
- 29:49Yeah, I'm with any sequel so and as you said portal to did a
- 29:54great job of it. Hmm.
- 29:56But what will Portal 3 do? Yeah.
- 29:58How were they keep pushing that envelope?
- 30:01Like I think it's a bit more challenging or a bit more of an
- 30:04interesting question for puzzle games because you can't just
- 30:07extend the storyline and show what happens next to the
- 30:09characters now, because I don't really want to know what happens
- 30:13next to that t shape. So, no quite yeah.
- 30:16Other than making me boil over with frustration and anger.
- 30:19Yeah, that is included quite so, obviously with it being a game,
- 30:26like, this is a bit of a shorter episode, but what are your final
- 30:30thoughts? What do you Think Tetris effect
- 30:31connected deserves to be in the list.
- 30:33We didn't give it a position obviously because this is one of
- 30:36the the latter editions after we'd finalized our list.
- 30:38So we're just covering it as a game that's been added in, but
- 30:42with the score of 94, you know, it's going to be, you know, not
- 30:45not low down, you know? It's going to probably be midway
- 30:49through. So do you think it deserves its
- 30:50place? I think Tetris as a franchisee
- 30:54absolutely deserves to be represented on this list.
- 30:58Looking at some of the other games that are represented And
- 31:01possibly over represented on this list.
- 31:03Yeah, this there's no doubt in my mind that a Tetris game
- 31:08deserves to be here. Of course, the argument is,
- 31:11whether it should be the original, but for me, I would
- 31:14rather play this version of Tetris any day.
- 31:17So two other versions. Yeah, so I'm quite happy for
- 31:21this game to be on the list. I would say, I mean, you could
- 31:24make an argument that it should be higher up.
- 31:26I would say, maybe the top 30. Yeah, we're in there.
- 31:29And I'll be quite happy for this game to be there.
- 31:31R. Yeah I agree with that
- 31:32completely top 30 I think will be absolutely fair enough and it
- 31:36does deserve representation on this list compared to as you say
- 31:39games are over represented here. So yes I think that it has
- 31:43earned a spot and this is a good game not for me.
- 31:47Unless you know, I'm looking to exceed my blood pressure limits,
- 31:52but go away and listen to the soundtrack.
- 31:54I probably would, I probably would call sounds good.
- 31:59Yeah, that that will help relieve the blood pressure
- 32:01Maybe. So yeah, I think we both enjoyed
- 32:05this game and I don't think we were expecting much from it and
- 32:08I don't think it's over like overly over-delivered, but I
- 32:12think that we were satisfied with what we played.
- 32:15Yeah. For one of these smaller games,
- 32:17it was a pleasant surprise. Yes.
- 32:19And that's, that's a rarity with the smaller games that we cover
- 32:22sometimes. So, what have we got coming up
- 32:25next week? I believe it's quite a big game,
- 32:27isn't it? Yeah, this is one.
- 32:29We've been waiting for some time about three years.
- 32:34Maybe, maybe not quite that long but yeah, we've definitely been
- 32:38talking about this game for a long time and I've referenced it
- 32:41quite a few times in the podcast.
- 32:43So next game, we're doing is the Legend of Zelda breath of the
- 32:48wild? Now, I know you may not have
- 32:51completed it by the time, we record because it is a big game.
- 32:55I've now sunk 165 hours into it overall, as massive, massive
- 33:02game, Don't think most people seen that much time into it, but
- 33:05I really played this game to hell and back when it came out.
- 33:10So, yeah. Your challenge, obviously,
- 33:15there's no timeline on this and it's still one.
- 33:17I think it's old again that you've got.
- 33:18Yeah, it's wallet princess. Yeah, it is to finish the Zelda
- 33:22games and I will hold you to that but like I said, there's no
- 33:25deadline to that. Yeah.
- 33:26And I don't think I will have finished this game.
- 33:29By the time we get to this Ive, put 25 hours into it so far.
- 33:33You making good progress. But yeah.
- 33:34It's a big game. Yeah, I've got to Divine beats
- 33:37left and then the endgame. But there's just so much to
- 33:40explore and do that. I keep finding myself being
- 33:42distracted, which that's a great thing though, isn't?
- 33:45Yeah. It is, which I'm sure will go
- 33:47into a lot more detail of when we talk about it next week.
- 33:50I think it's going to be a very interesting thing.
- 33:51So it's worth sharing. The tip that I gave you before
- 33:56starting was let this game. Take you, ya don't ya?
- 34:02Just explore. Which is what happened.
- 34:04Aim that is that the best word to describe breath of the wild
- 34:08exploration. Yes and yeah.
- 34:11So I think that's quite good. I don't know what I'm looking
- 34:16for anyway. Yes it's a good, something
- 34:20that's the word I was like, yes. And as we've covered pretty much
- 34:24all of the main lines out at games in the in the list other
- 34:27than Skyward Sword. I think that you know, this is
- 34:32it's a big one. For us, and we wanted to leave
- 34:34breath of the wild to. We did want to leave it to the
- 34:36very last episode of the top 100, but with issues with
- 34:39Half-Life Alex and the additions of the others, we thought, we'll
- 34:42just we'll just do it and get it done.
- 34:44Yeah, I mean, it's our podcast is now basically been extended
- 34:50due to the addition of an another list, if definitely it
- 34:53away all the time, software games, baby.
- 34:57Yes, and lots of others. Yes, so join us next week for
- 35:02breath of the wild. I think it's going to Very
- 35:03interesting episode and it will be a, the end of an era to a
- 35:10game series that we started relatively early on.
- 35:13After we started this podcast in 2020, you say that.
- 35:16But there's obviously, the addition of Tears of the later
- 35:19sold again, which I started last night, and I'm very much
- 35:24enjoying it so far. I do love me.
- 35:25There we go. Minecraft, Minecraft Zelda so
- 35:29dungeons Elder face. That's right.
