- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always Luna is here with me. Luna: Hey everyone! I'm so ready to learn more Swahili. Last time we covered how to say sorry and excuse me. Today feels like something new. Lucas: Exactly. We've ordered a lot of things at cafés and markets — chai, cake, chapati. But what if you're not a fan of something? Today we'll learn how to say what you like and what you don't like. Luna: Oh, that's so useful. I can already say 'Nataka chai' — 'I want tea'. But how do I say 'I like tea'? Lucas: Great question. For 'I like', we use the word 'napenda'. So 'Napenda chai' means 'I like tea'. Let's say it together: Napenda chai. Luna: Napenda chai. That feels good. So 'Napenda chai' is 'I like tea'. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want to say 'I don't like', you say 'sipendi'. So 'Sipendi kahawa' — 'I don't like coffee'. Try it. Luna: Sipendi kahawa. Oof, that's a mouthful. Sipendi kahawa. Lucas: You've got it. 'Sipendi' is just 'si' plus 'penda' — the negative form. Now let's hear you say both: Napenda chai, sipendi kahawa. Luna: Napenda chai, sipendi kahawa. Yeah! I love that contrast. Lucas: And if Fexingo has been helping you make real progress with Swahili, listener support is what keeps this show ad-free. You can buy us a coffee at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo — it really helps us keep going. Luna: Absolutely. Even a small gesture goes a long way. Now back to our likes and dislikes — can we ask someone else what they like? Lucas: Of course. To ask 'Do you like tea?', you say 'Unapenda chai?' Unapenda chai. Luna: Unapenda chai? So 'u' is for 'you'. Unapenda chai? And if I want to say yes, I can say 'Napenda chai'. Lucas: Right. And if you want to be more specific, like 'I like tea but I don't like milk', you can say 'Napenda chai, lakini sipendi maziwa.' Lakini means 'but'. Luna: Napenda chai, lakini sipendi maziwa. That's a whole sentence! Napenda chai, lakini sipendi maziwa. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's do a quick practice. I'll ask you, Luna: Unapenda chai? Luna: Napenda chai, lakini sipendi kahawa. Lucas: Excellent. And for our listeners, try answering that question about your own preferences. Unapenda chai? Napenda chai. Or sipendi chai — it's your choice. Luna: I love how simple it is. So today we learned napenda and sipendi, and how to ask unapenda. That's enough to start talking about what you like in Swahili! Lucas: Right. Practice these phrases, and next time you're at a café, you can say what you really enjoy. Thanks for joining us on Learn Swahili with Fexingo. We'll be back with more soon.
