Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Come in to the power to here on college football addiction.
- 0:03Speaker 1: We had an entire recap show lined up for you
- 0:05Speaker 1: and then breaking news as Cole brought us as I
- 0:11Speaker 1: was trying to get the show up and going Florida
- 0:13Speaker 1: State making huge changes at the top.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Was it Andrea Adelson that reported it Cole?
- 0:21Speaker 3: Andrea Adelson of ESPN has officially reported that athletic director,
- 0:25Speaker 3: Michael Alford and the school president at Florida state have
- 0:29Speaker 3: been fired ahead of the week three matchup against Alabama,
- 0:33Speaker 3: which as TJ has pointed out, maybe the final days
- 0:36Speaker 3: of what we have in the Mike Norvell era.
- 0:38Speaker 2: So, okay.
- 0:39Speaker 1: So let's, let me clarify. It is just Alford. The
- 0:42Speaker 1: president was only telling Adelson.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Um, So just just Alford.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Not the president, which, yeah, that was confused by that,
- 0:52Speaker 1: because I think he's done a lot of really good things.
- 0:54Speaker 2: I don't think he's done anything that. So I was
- 0:56Speaker 2: confused by that.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We were, you know, just kind of reading quickly, literally
- 0:59Speaker 1: getting this news and going live, which we had a
- 1:01Speaker 1: bunch of recaps to do. We'll still get to all
- 1:03Speaker 1: of them, but we'll talk about Florida State here for
- 1:05Speaker 1: a few minutes and then move on to what the
- 1:07Speaker 1: what the weekend was like, obviously, you know. you can
- 1:12Speaker 1: make the best plans in the world and then, uh,
- 1:15Speaker 1: life happens. So, and apparently that has happened at Florida
- 1:18Speaker 1: state today. We are presented by prize picks. We appreciate
- 1:20Speaker 1: them for all of their support.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I mean, I've been talking to you guys about this.
- 1:23Speaker 1: We can jump right into it and you guys can
- 1:25Speaker 1: pound any questions off of me. I don't know why
- 1:27Speaker 1: I use the word pound there, but.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You know, I'm going to go pound a beer instead
- 1:32Speaker 2: of a, uh, yeah, you know what?
- 1:36Speaker 4: It's not am it's fine. It's celebration time.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I don't know what the, uh, YouTube rules are for
- 1:42Speaker 1: certain things, but we're, uh.
- 1:44Speaker 4: Do you have champagne? Cause I think that you can
- 1:46Speaker 4: celebrate with the show.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I'm more of a bourbon guy just to let you know.
- 1:49Speaker 1: So nine 17 Eastern here on the coast.
- 1:54Speaker 5: The cover three guys drink Modelo on their instant reaction show.
- 1:58Speaker 5: So I think it'd be fine.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I mean, just a beautiful sip in the morning to
- 2:01Speaker 3: realize that the days of Mike Norvell are coming to
- 2:04Speaker 3: an end TJ.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Um, Yeah, it's done.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I had some conversations yesterday, and I'll tell you guys,
- 2:10Speaker 1: just now that some of this has come out, I
- 2:12Speaker 1: had a video planned for Double Fries today that is
- 2:15Speaker 1: not going to now happen, where I blamed the athletic
- 2:19Speaker 1: department for a lot of things.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Well, at least Florida State shows that they give a
- 2:22Speaker 2: damn about football now.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I've talked with you guys about this,
- 2:25Speaker 1: but the problems have been top-down, in my opinion.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And I'll tell you this. I'll be very transparent. I think.
- 2:34Speaker 1: that getting a new coach and a new athletic director
- 2:37Speaker 1: are what's best for Florida State. I will tell you,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I think there are other problems at Florida State that
- 2:44Speaker 1: need to be resolved. I think there needs to be
- 2:46Speaker 1: better alignment. I think there are just structural issues. There's
- 2:51Speaker 1: a lot of, and this is probably not uncommon to FSU,
- 2:55Speaker 1: But there's a lot of old guard that needs to.
- 2:59Speaker 1: I'm not wishing that people will die. But just die off.
- 3:03Speaker 1: You need new blood in there. And whether that's physically
- 3:08Speaker 1: old people dying and new people coming in, or just
- 3:11Speaker 1: kind of a changing of the guard, I think that
- 3:14Speaker 1: needs to happen in a lot of places. A lot
- 3:17Speaker 1: of these colleges have had a lot of success over
- 3:20Speaker 1: the last few decades.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And they have just.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Old leadership and old voices and old ways of doing
- 3:29Speaker 1: things that are not necessarily modernized, whereas, man, there are
- 3:32Speaker 1: probably some new programs out there that don't really have
- 3:36Speaker 1: that problem because they don't, you know, for instance, and
- 3:39Speaker 1: we don't have to go into it, you know, in
- 3:41Speaker 1: a lengthy way, it would not surprise me. If there
- 3:45Speaker 1: are some power struggle things that happen at places like
- 3:48Speaker 1: Alabama and LSU and just like this deep South, like
- 3:52Speaker 1: the rich old men have the money, have the power,
- 3:55Speaker 1: make the decisions. And how much do those guys want
- 3:59Speaker 1: to be in the middle of things? And how much
- 4:02Speaker 1: do they just kind of say, here's my money and
- 4:04Speaker 1: move on? Florida State definitely has a lot of people
- 4:06Speaker 1: that are too in the middle of everything that's going on. Um,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and they, they need to adjust some of that and
- 4:13Speaker 1: they need to modernize some of the ways they do things.
- 4:16Speaker 1: All that said, I ultimately think this is really good
- 4:19Speaker 1: news for FSU athletics. You look at, we obviously talk
- 4:24Speaker 1: about football, but you just look at where Florida state's
- 4:26Speaker 1: athletics are overall. My buddy, Brendan Sunone over at 24
- 4:30Speaker 1: seven sports did a, just literally a graph and you
- 4:33Speaker 1: can watch the last six years of every sport in
- 4:37Speaker 1: FSU's athletic department, with the exception of, um, with the
- 4:42Speaker 1: exception of soccer, which won a national championship last year,
- 4:46Speaker 1: has downward declined over the last six years.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Well, the last six years, you've had a new athletic director.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And I understand that good times and bad times, but
- 4:56Speaker 1: for every single sport to decline over that stretch, somebody's
- 5:01Speaker 1: got to pay the price for that, especially when the
- 5:05Speaker 1: one that makes you all of your money Florida State
- 5:07Speaker 1: is not a basketball school. They're proud of their baseball program,
- 5:11Speaker 1: which has been very good for a long time. They
- 5:13Speaker 1: do great in softball. They've got a great beach volleyball team. Again,
- 5:15Speaker 1: soccer's won five, I think, since 2014 national championships.
- 5:19Speaker 2: They've got good programs otherwise.
- 5:21Speaker 1: But when the one that's not making money is failing
- 5:26Speaker 1: and you are letting it fail, then that puts you
- 5:30Speaker 1: in a tough spot as a department that needs to
- 5:33Speaker 1: generate more revenue. So Yeah, ultimately a good step. I
- 5:36Speaker 1: would expect Mike Norvell is on his way out pretty quickly, too.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I would not be surprised based on, one, conversations I
- 5:43Speaker 1: had yesterday, and then, two, this morning's news. If he
- 5:48Speaker 1: has not gone after the Alabama game, I could see
- 5:51Speaker 1: if that game was within the spread, which is 18.5.
- 5:54Speaker 1: We'll talk about it on Wednesday. If that game is
- 5:57Speaker 1: within the spread, you lose by 10, I could see
- 6:00Speaker 1: them not making a move then. But then I just
- 6:02Speaker 1: think his... Literally my prediction is his next, his next
- 6:06Speaker 1: bad loss, whether that's a bad loss to Bama this weekend,
- 6:09Speaker 1: obviously if you lost to central Arkansas, his alma mater, they,
- 6:12Speaker 1: they would make a move. Then if you lost by
- 6:16Speaker 1: really any amount, I think to Virginia, I think that
- 6:19Speaker 1: would be where they would pull the plug.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Now I'll say this.
- 6:22Speaker 1: If you beat Virginia and then beat Louisville, you start
- 6:24Speaker 1: to run into a, okay, what are we doing here?
- 6:27Speaker 2: I have no thoughts that they can beat any of
- 6:29Speaker 2: those teams.
- 6:30Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean, ultimately you are, you are starting
- 6:33Speaker 1: over in Tallahassee and you're ripping the bandaid off and
- 6:36Speaker 1: starting from the top down.
- 6:37Speaker 2: And so that's, that's good news.
- 6:38Speaker 5: I think if Norville loses to central Arkansas, can they
- 6:41Speaker 5: fire him for cause?
- 6:42Speaker 4: Like, I mean, does he even do the press conference?
- 6:46Speaker 4: That's the big question.
- 6:47Speaker 1: You know, just before we go on, I will give
- 6:49Speaker 1: some love to our friends over at prize picks. Hopefully
- 6:52Speaker 1: you're enjoying this clip from the power to here on
- 6:54Speaker 1: college football addiction. We are only showing one game so
- 6:58Speaker 1: far for Friday night football, but it is Miami.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Against wake forest. And we got some picks for you.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I tease all of these.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So I lowered the mints of passing yards to 24.5.
- 7:09Speaker 1: He's hitting the more on that. I got geo Lopez
- 7:11Speaker 1: throwing one touchdown. So wake does score a touchdown through
- 7:15Speaker 1: the air against Miami. I got Malachi Tony's receiving yards
- 7:18Speaker 1: at 69 and a half. He's blowing that total out
- 7:21Speaker 1: of the water. Give me the more on that. I
- 7:22Speaker 1: got Mark Fletcher, 49 and a half rushing yards. Miami's
- 7:25Speaker 1: offense is going to feast. Give me the more on
- 7:27Speaker 1: that one as well. Give me all three Miami ones.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Give me the geo Lopez. Don't get mad at me,
- 7:32Speaker 1: Canes fans. For the more on touchdowns, I'll do more
- 7:35Speaker 1: picks throughout the week. One showing so far, but lock
- 7:38Speaker 1: it in early before these lines change. I'm telling you,
- 7:40Speaker 1: Miami's offense ain't going to be held down. Go get
- 7:42Speaker 1: the picks before it's too late. Use code HMA.
- 7:44Speaker 2: All new users who do.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Get $ 150 in lineups instantly if they win their first
- 7:49Speaker 1: $ 5 lineup again on the PrizePicks app.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Now back to the clip.
- 7:53Speaker 4: No, I mean, does he do the press conference?
- 7:54Speaker 3: Or do you have at that point the school president
- 7:56Speaker 3: or whoever you will be, the interim coach, be like, guys,
- 7:59Speaker 3: it's done. The on-field result there was enough for us
- 8:02Speaker 3: to say, we can't even let him back in the building.
- 8:05Speaker 5: I would do an inverse Holly Rowe, Steve Sarkeesian, and
- 8:07Speaker 5: then I'd have Holly Rowe inform Mike.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Norvell that way.
- 8:13Speaker 5: And he was fine.
- 8:15Speaker 1: But it wouldn't be Holly. It would be like the,
- 8:17Speaker 1: not even the C-list. It'd be the D-list reporter for
- 8:19Speaker 1: Central Arkansas.
- 8:21Speaker 3: It would be somebody who works on the D crew
- 8:24Speaker 3: that literally has a job working in Cedar Rapids, Iowa,
- 8:27Speaker 3: that's doing ESPN Plus or ACC Network Plus.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Here's what we know.
- 8:32Speaker 3: When you get a new athletic director, you are starting fresh. Basically,
- 8:35Speaker 3: nine times out of ten, unless the athletic director is
- 8:38Speaker 3: retiring on their own accord. So, perfect example of this
- 8:40Speaker 3: is like Oklahoma. Oklahoma's athletic director, Joe Castiglione, decided to
- 8:44Speaker 3: step on down after this season. They get a deal
- 8:47Speaker 3: done in place for Brent Menables, which... I understand the
- 8:50Speaker 3: reasoning why he wasn't on a hot seat, but regardless,
- 8:53Speaker 3: he gets a new deal done.
- 8:54Speaker 4: That's a different case in this scenario.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Think of it such as a GM and a quarterback
- 8:59Speaker 3: in the NFL, I mean a head coach in the NFL.
- 9:01Speaker 3: When they go into a new program, they want their guy.
- 9:04Speaker 4: They want their personnel.
- 9:06Speaker 3: They want their person that they are leaning into to
- 9:08Speaker 3: be the face underneath their regime. And so the bygones
- 9:12Speaker 3: and the stragglers and the dwindlers that are left behind
- 9:15Speaker 3: are are unfortunately thrown to the door. But this is
- 9:18Speaker 3: not thrown to the door because it is a straggler behind.
- 9:20Speaker 3: This is thrown to the door because it is a
- 9:22Speaker 3: necessary move. Mike Norvell went about a game plan that
- 9:26Speaker 3: for two years worked entirely for Florida State to be
- 9:29Speaker 3: able to be viewed as a contender. They went big
- 9:32Speaker 3: in the transfer portal. They hit in the transfer portal.
- 9:35Speaker 3: They found talent that was able to elevate the status
- 9:37Speaker 3: of what they would be in the ACC with guys
- 9:40Speaker 3: like Keon Coleman and guys like Jared Verse. And they
- 9:43Speaker 3: were able to find a really solid quarterback in Jordan Travis.
- 9:46Speaker 3: But then, they relied so heavily on the transfer portal
- 9:49Speaker 3: that they missed on those players and they weren't developing
- 9:51Speaker 3: talent in the recruiting trail, which a lot of it
- 9:54Speaker 3: seemed like Miami and it seemed like Florida, to start
- 9:56Speaker 3: taking over the state. And ultimately, the results on the
- 9:59Speaker 3: field didn't help the case. You went 2-10, and then 5-7,
- 10:02Speaker 3: and you're well on a pathway to be 5-7 once again.
- 10:05Speaker 3: And you have to throw in, I think, the grand
- 10:06Speaker 3: scheme of the Mike Norvell tenure down in Tallahassee, which TJ,
- 10:10Speaker 3: you know very good damn well.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Before the 10-3 season, Mike Norvell was awful.
- 10:15Speaker 3: So it's like, it's not like we're just sitting here
- 10:17Speaker 3: and saying, oh, he's just been bad the last two years.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Mike Norvell had no life or no recollection going into
- 10:23Speaker 3: his tenure.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And then before that, it was really taggart.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Here's what I will tell you about that.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I also think like where Florida State was take when
- 10:30Speaker 1: he took them over, it was terrible. But I, I
- 10:34Speaker 1: do give some grace for the fact that he won
- 10:36Speaker 1: three games into the COVID year, won five games in
- 10:39Speaker 1: the second year. They started out 0-4 that second year,
- 10:42Speaker 1: and then he went 5-3 down the stretch. He did
- 10:46Speaker 1: have two losing records, but I will say there was
- 10:48Speaker 1: a clear build from where he started. So the last
- 10:52Speaker 1: two and change years, to me, are not comparable with
- 10:56Speaker 1: the first two.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Fair.
- 10:58Speaker 1: I mean, and you know that I'm not sitting here
- 11:00Speaker 1: to give Mike Norvell a lot of grace, but I
- 11:02Speaker 1: will give him that grace. He was building in those
- 11:05Speaker 1: first two years. You started out poorly. It looked like Mario.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Mario went five and seven his first year.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Sure.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Okay.
- 11:14Speaker 1: And then you saw a 10-win season for Mario, and
- 11:16Speaker 1: then he got better and better. Well, he went five wins,
- 11:19Speaker 1: seven wins, 10 wins. But I'll give Mike that grace.
- 11:22Speaker 1: It was not perfect the first two years by any means,
- 11:24Speaker 1: but there was a progression of increasing success.
- 11:28Speaker 3: But there are two things I will say about the
- 11:30Speaker 3: Mario tenure. Number one, the Mario tenure, you continue to
- 11:32Speaker 3: see progress. And I think that we're only going to
- 11:34Speaker 3: continue to see more progress. This is a team that
- 11:36Speaker 3: now in the ACC should be viewed as a favorite
- 11:39Speaker 3: to win the conference every single year.
- 11:40Speaker 4: They should be a favorite to win the college football playoff.
- 11:42Speaker 3: But the bigger thing is that Mario used the transfer portal.
- 11:46Speaker 4: For what it's supposed to be.
- 11:48Speaker 3: An asset to elevate certain holes on the roster without
- 11:51Speaker 3: taking away from the development of talent of young players.
- 11:55Speaker 3: It's why Miami right now is killing it in the
- 11:57Speaker 3: recruiting side of things. They have dominated in the standpoint
- 12:00Speaker 3: of being able to say, we bring talent to Coral
- 12:03Speaker 3: Gables to be developed underneath our regime.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Mike Norvell doesn't have that.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Mike Norvell has the transfer portal, and he used the
- 12:11Speaker 3: transfer portal to be able to not just back piece
- 12:13Speaker 3: into pieces, but to elevate the status of the entire roster.
- 12:17Speaker 3: And there were moments where it hit, and there were
- 12:19Speaker 3: moments where it didn't. And recruiting has not been up
- 12:21Speaker 3: to the same par. So to me, when you look
- 12:24Speaker 3: at the losing record and the downward spiral over the
- 12:27Speaker 3: last three seasons, and the inability to be able to
- 12:29Speaker 3: win when it comes to recruiting talent, Guys, you have
- 12:34Speaker 3: to change up your philosophy. And if you don't want
- 12:36Speaker 3: to believe me on that one, think about this for
- 12:37Speaker 3: a second. We had one losing season of Dan Mullen.
- 12:41Speaker 3: One losing season of Dan Mullen. And the guy didn't
- 12:43Speaker 3: want to recruit. And he was not recruiting in the SEC.
- 12:46Speaker 3: And they said, okay, we're done.
- 12:48Speaker 4: We're moving off and we're getting Billy Napier to come
- 12:49Speaker 4: on in.
- 12:50Speaker 3: If you don't want to do half of the job
- 12:52Speaker 3: in today's day and age, and you're trying to find
- 12:55Speaker 3: cheat codes or shortcuts to be able to build your roster,
- 12:58Speaker 3: then you better have the results on the field. And
- 13:00Speaker 3: if you don't, this is what happens. Athletic directors are
- 13:03Speaker 3: fired and new head coaches are brought into play.
- 13:05Speaker 2: You're exactly right about the way that Mario built.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Mario used the portal as a band-aid to help to start,
- 13:13Speaker 1: and now he uses it very selectively. Mike tried to
- 13:15Speaker 1: build his roster that way and refused. Well, I don't
- 13:20Speaker 1: know if refused is the right word because they were
- 13:22Speaker 1: in for a lot of elite guys, but they couldn't
- 13:24Speaker 1: land them, right?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Always the bridesmaid, never the bride type thing.
- 13:27Speaker 1: So I don't know if he, I think half of
- 13:30Speaker 1: it was like an over-reliance and then half of it
- 13:32Speaker 1: was like, he couldn't get high school recruits to say yes.
- 13:35Speaker 1: So wherever that falls on the spectrum of like, can
- 13:37Speaker 1: you do it or are you refusing to do it or,
- 13:40Speaker 1: or whatever? Yeah.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Like it was a very different strategy that went about it.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I think that, you know, they Norvell and we'll diagnose
- 13:48Speaker 1: his tenure hopefully next Monday when this is done or Sunday.
- 13:53Speaker 2: But Norvell, He became a.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I forget the name of the phrase or whatever it is.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Not a scapegoat, but.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Well, no, you become a product of your own success.
- 14:04Speaker 1: You become a failure because of your own success. The
- 14:06Speaker 1: portal works too well for him in those couple of
- 14:09Speaker 1: years that it worked really well, that it was like, oh, shoot,
- 14:12Speaker 1: this is always going to be... This is always going
- 14:15Speaker 1: to be what we've got going. This is great news.
- 14:18Speaker 2: It almost.
- 14:19Speaker 1: it almost like needed to fail a little bit for
- 14:21Speaker 1: him to where they just went like eight, nine wins
- 14:23Speaker 1: instead of 10 or 13 so that he could see like,
- 14:26Speaker 1: Oh no, we actually have to do this the right
- 14:27Speaker 1: way because they went three wins, five wins, 10 wins,
- 14:30Speaker 1: 13 wins.
- 14:31Speaker 2: If they had just gone three, five, eight, nine, no,
- 14:36Speaker 2: he wasn't getting fired.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Like that's a, that's a slower, but a very clear progression,
- 14:40Speaker 1: but it might've emphasized like, yeah, you got to recruit
- 14:42Speaker 1: through you.
- 14:43Speaker 2: You can get good in the portal.
- 14:45Speaker 1: You'll never get great in the portal, but, It might
- 14:47Speaker 1: have actually helped him had they not had the success.
- 14:50Speaker 1: But once they had the success in the portal, you know,
- 14:53Speaker 1: obviously he was like, oh, shoot, I can just do
- 14:55Speaker 1: this all day, every day. So but ultimately, you know,
- 14:58Speaker 1: I do think this is good for FSU. Like they
- 15:01Speaker 1: it seems like they give a damn about football at
- 15:03Speaker 1: this at least this morning.
- 15:04Speaker 4: You know what happened?
- 15:05Speaker 3: Mario Cristobal went in and used the bandaid method, as
- 15:08Speaker 3: you said, for the recruiting. Florida state went into the
- 15:11Speaker 3: doctor in need of brain surgery and they slapped on
- 15:14Speaker 3: some gauze and a bandaid and said, that'll do.
- 15:16Speaker 4: There you go. Go back out into society. People like that,
- 15:18Speaker 4: like that was it.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Any overarching thoughts, questions, comments. And if not, we will.
- 15:26Speaker 4: When do you set, when is the fire date? I
- 15:28Speaker 4: guess is the question.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Do you believe it will come on Sunday or do
- 15:31Speaker 3: you think it will be after the central Arkansas performance
- 15:33Speaker 3: or what?
- 15:35Speaker 1: I don't think they'll do it after a win against
- 15:37Speaker 1: central Arkansas. If, I think if Bama covers the spread.
- 15:41Speaker 2: It happens on Sunday.
- 15:42Speaker 4: I'm going to say the Virginia game.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I think it'd be difficult to do it. I mean,
- 15:50Speaker 1: at the end of the day, you're going to do
- 15:51Speaker 1: it anyway. To me, there's no reason not to just
- 15:54Speaker 1: do it this morning. If you want to not interrupt
- 15:57Speaker 1: prep of a game week where you're a three-score dog,
- 15:59Speaker 1: then I guess that's important.
- 16:02Speaker 2: You are dealing with other things. I don't know... this
- 16:08Speaker 2: season they punted on anyway.
- 16:10Speaker 1: That's to me, that's part of why this needed to
- 16:12Speaker 1: happen and why, you know, Michael Alford, in my opinion,
- 16:15Speaker 1: I'm not trying to give him a lot of grace
- 16:17Speaker 1: on this either. But in my opinion, Michael Alford should
- 16:21Speaker 1: not have been allowed to make the decision to bring
- 16:24Speaker 1: Mike Norvell.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Back like that.
- 16:25Speaker 1: And that's why I say, I think Florida state has
- 16:27Speaker 1: bigger structural issues than just an AD and a coach.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Everyone in the world could see the way that this
- 16:32Speaker 1: thing was trending. And so to bring him back, for
- 16:36Speaker 1: this year and punt on this season, you know, tell
- 16:39Speaker 1: your fans to basically eat a shit sandwich is the
- 16:41Speaker 1: way I've been saying it.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Is disrespectful to the fan base.
- 16:45Speaker 1: And I think that's why Florida State has bigger leadership
- 16:47Speaker 1: problems than just the AD and the president, or I'm sorry,
- 16:49Speaker 1: just the AD and the coach.
- 16:51Speaker 2: And so I wonder a little bit about the.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Just is a new AD as a new coach going
- 17:02Speaker 1: to help that said, if you're going to do it anyway,
- 17:05Speaker 1: I don't, I don't, I think firing Norvell today or
- 17:08Speaker 1: after Bama would just be throwing a bone to your
- 17:11Speaker 1: fan base. Like it would just be like, okay, you
- 17:12Speaker 1: guys want this. We're going to do it eventually. Let's
- 17:14Speaker 1: just get it over with now so that you can.
- 17:17Speaker 1: enjoy the rest of the season. We won't have to
- 17:18Speaker 1: have booze. When we play central Arkansas at home, we
- 17:22Speaker 1: can just enjoy football. It won't be very good football
- 17:25Speaker 1: at the same time. I don't think that firing Norvell,
- 17:28Speaker 1: as long as the locker room is still bought in, right?
- 17:30Speaker 1: That that's probably the big caveat, but, I don't think
- 17:33Speaker 1: firing Norvell today increases your chances of wins down the road.
- 17:38Speaker 5: No, it's a lawsuit.
- 17:40Speaker 1: So if your justification as an administration at this point
- 17:44Speaker 1: is like, hey, we're going to keep Mike for a
- 17:45Speaker 1: few more games to kind of keep the team engaged
- 17:48Speaker 1: and give us a better chance to win a few games,
- 17:51Speaker 1: I'm okay with that. It is very clear what's happening.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Mike Norvell will not be the coach in Tallahassee. Watch
- 17:56Speaker 1: him go beat Alabama now that I've.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Said all this stuff. Oh, don't worry.
- 17:59Speaker 4: I mean, trust me.
- 18:00Speaker 3: It's like, it's, it's, it's poetic that Alabama's defense showed
- 18:03Speaker 3: up in the second half only for Mike Norvell and
- 18:06Speaker 3: Ashton Daniels to come on.
- 18:09Speaker 2: But if you're Florida state, I think that's why you
- 18:10Speaker 2: should probably do it today.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Just in case that was to happen, you know, like,
- 18:15Speaker 1: you know, like, cause if they, if they beat Bama
- 18:17Speaker 1: on Saturday, could you imagine going into Tuscaloosa and beating
- 18:19Speaker 1: Bama and then they fire him Sunday anyway, like, because
- 18:21Speaker 1: that's coming. That would be, I mean, Jimbo got fired
- 18:24Speaker 1: after a win. So it would be the wildest thing ever.
- 18:26Speaker 1: But how do you fire?
- 18:27Speaker 4: Billy got fired after a win last year.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yeah. How do you fire a coach after a three?
- 18:32Speaker 1: He's a three score dog and he goes in and
- 18:33Speaker 1: wins on the road. And then you fire him the
- 18:35Speaker 1: next week.
- 18:36Speaker 4: You take a dog.
- 18:37Speaker 3: Okay.
- 18:37Speaker 4: I mean, I hate to be, I hate to use
- 18:38Speaker 4: this scenario. I do.
- 18:40Speaker 3: But you let a dog go out on a high note,
- 18:42Speaker 3: let him eat chocolate for the first time and then.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Put him to sleep. Same thing.
- 18:45Speaker 3: It's a horrible theory, but like sometimes going out on
- 18:49Speaker 3: the highest of levels, it's the best way to do it.
- 18:52Speaker 5: It's just an awful thing to say this early in
- 18:54Speaker 5: the morning.
- 18:56Speaker 4: We got, listen, the bourbon is flowing through us. I'm
- 18:59Speaker 4: getting a second wind from DJ. That's what it is.
- 19:01Speaker 4: It's the alcohol talking.
- 19:03Speaker 5: To cap this off, one of my favorite quotes about
- 19:05Speaker 5: college athletics, I believe it's credited to Scott Barnes, who's
- 19:08Speaker 5: the AD at Oregon State nowadays. Athletics are the front
- 19:11Speaker 5: porch of the university. It's not the most important room
- 19:14Speaker 5: in the house, but it is the most visible. Florida
- 19:16Speaker 5: State sports have been declining for quite some time. So
- 19:20Speaker 5: this move makes a lot of sense. And it's not
- 19:22Speaker 5: just about football. It's trying to monetize. And I know
- 19:25Speaker 5: people don't like to talk about that this time of year.
- 19:27Speaker 2: It's like, hey, there's games. Let's talk about the games.
- 19:29Speaker 5: But you have to be able to make money off
- 19:31Speaker 5: your major sports, football, basketball. Volleyball has become a lot
- 19:34Speaker 5: more lucrative. Wrestling has become much more lucrative as time
- 19:37Speaker 5: has gone on. So Florida State's got to correct those things.
- 19:40Speaker 5: And they have the potential to do all these things.
- 19:42Speaker 5: I've said for a long time, this is a blue
- 19:44Speaker 5: blood program. This should be a desirable job. Right now,
- 19:48Speaker 5: it's not. Does this go to Tom Herndon? just to
- 19:50Speaker 5: finish out the year and then you clean house in
- 19:52Speaker 5: the offseason? You really have to regroup. I think it's
- 19:55Speaker 5: going to be a coveted job. And Florida State's future
- 19:57Speaker 5: is going to hinge on what this next hire is.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Without a doubt, it'll be fun. We'll continue to talk
- 20:02Speaker 1: about it. Sorry that that segment was probably all over
- 20:05Speaker 1: the place. We got the news as we were going live.
- 20:08Speaker 1: DJ's been drinking, and he's been home.
- 20:10Speaker 2: I was like, well, I guess I got to change
- 20:13Speaker 2: the thumbnail around.
- 20:14Speaker 1: All right, what we actually showed up to talk about today,
- 20:16Speaker 1: we appreciate all those that tuned in, and maybe that's
- 20:19Speaker 1: a good segue into, if you're not already subscribed, make
- 20:21Speaker 1: sure that you are.
