Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Best case scenario for Iowa football, Cubs rolls Cards, Big 12 Football Win Totals, Bill Seals Talks Cyclones
Transcript
- 0:06All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:09a Thursday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:12Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next couple of hours we get
- 0:15things rolling. Turn things over the drive at 2
- 0:18Lucas strain and do be determined Co host will take you
- 0:24from until 5:00 and then overtime.
- 0:26I were at that point as Heather is on vacation.
- 0:29She's in Alaska. She had an up close and personal
- 0:32with a bear. I think there was a fence
- 0:33between. Them you think so?
- 0:34Or a cage. Yeah, that seemed.
- 0:36Awfully close. It did seem awful close, but
- 0:38she's on an Alaskan cruise and good for her getting away and
- 0:42having some time to do that. But anyways, Lucas will be in
- 0:47here at 2:00. Here's what's coming up with
- 0:48Trent and I. Yesterday we were just full.
- 0:52We didn't have a chance to talk about the Cyclones and TJ
- 0:54Otzelberger's press conference from Tuesday of this week.
- 0:58So today Bill Seals will join us.
- 1:00Catch up with Bill Seals. He was part of it, of course.
- 1:03And we'll get the latest on the doings at Iowa State with Bill
- 1:07Seals, cyclonereport.com, as they get set to emerge to part
- 1:12of the On Three network. That should be any day.
- 1:15So if you're a subscriber to either one, you'll get them both
- 1:17for the price of 1, which is good news.
- 1:20At least I see it from from the paying subscribers out there.
- 1:23So Bill seals the bottom of the hour, hour number two.
- 1:26We're going to take a look at the Big 10 and do so with a guy
- 1:29that covers Oregon. I think we can do a lot of these
- 1:32in the old weeks leading up to the to August to fall camp.
- 1:38Maybe different voices from around the country and how they
- 1:42see the leagues that move the needle here in the state of
- 1:45Iowa. We'll get some guys that to
- 1:47cover a team in the Big 12. Chris Level comes to mind from
- 1:50Texas Tech. We'll get him today.
- 1:52We've got a guy that covers, as I mentioned, Oregon from
- 1:55lockdown. What's his name?
- 1:56Spencer. Spencer McLaughlin.
- 1:57Spencer McLaughlin. So actually did a crossover
- 2:00episode with Spencer's. We're going through our team
- 2:02previews, whoever I was matching up with throughout the course of
- 2:05the year, and I'll have those next week when I'm on vacation,
- 2:07so. Every one of them.
- 2:08So I'll have Indiana and Oregon, I have those already in the can
- 2:11ready to go next week. And a little crossover edition,
- 2:13getting to know the opponent a little bit.
- 2:15Spencer also is the host of Locked on College Football, the
- 2:18daily college football podcast. Is he?
- 2:19Really. And he is the voice of the
- 2:21Southern Utah football guy. He is.
- 2:24Spencer is really fun. He's really goofy.
- 2:28You either will get a kick out of him or he'll annoy the crap
- 2:30out of you. But he is.
- 2:32So if he's back on these airwaves, you don't know which
- 2:34way. You know exactly what it is.
- 2:36Ken sometimes can be a little bit slow, as we learned a couple
- 2:39years ago with Boog in the booth.
- 2:41He didn't like a marquee and now he's beloved.
- 2:43So we'll see how things go with Spencer, but I think our our
- 2:45listeners will get a kick out of him.
- 2:47Knows the big 10 incredibly well.
- 2:49Obviously the connection to Oregon and he hosts our big time
- 2:53squad show from time to time that we do when all of us get
- 2:55together, at least half the teams get together.
- 2:57So he has a a good mind in college football.
- 3:00And Kenneth, we're going through Oregon, Iowa coming up this
- 3:04year. That's a really big game.
- 3:06It's a game that when you're looking at if Iowa has a special
- 3:10season, you know, I want to put it this way, if Iowa goes 10:00
- 3:14and 2:00. I won't be shocked.
- 3:16But both their losses are to Oregon and Penn State.
- 3:20Is there enough depth in the resume?
- 3:22Because you can already hear the naysayers come November, right?
- 3:25Didn't play Michigan, didn't play Ohio State.
- 3:27Not their fault. Lost to Oregon, lost to Penn
- 3:30State. Not going to be in the Big 10
- 3:31championship game to to help build up that resume.
- 3:35Last year nine and three got in with that last spot.
- 3:38A10 and two Iowa team that loses to the two heavyweights and
- 3:41let's say Indiana takes a step back in their seven and five and
- 3:43Iowa State has a. Seven, they got a really good
- 3:45quarterback. They do.
- 3:46I love Mendoza but they the rest of those teams also there isn't
- 3:50a signature win in there. Is it enough?
- 3:53You know, I on the surface I want to say yes, but not knowing
- 3:57how everybody else's season, yes.
- 3:59It's not a vacuum, right? It's depended on everybody else.
- 4:03I can just hear the narrative already, can't you?
- 4:05You've heard it before. Yes, you lost to the two teams.
- 4:07Just post it right behind me. Yes, you lost to the two teams.
- 4:10You played with the Pulse. The rest of your teams.
- 4:12There isn't a signature victory on there.
- 4:13Oh, you went to Iowa State in Wisconsin and and Nebraska and
- 4:16who cares? That's what the national
- 4:18conversation will be. We know here how difficult that
- 4:20will be. And again, it could be a year
- 4:22where that easily gets them in, it gets them an eighth seed, or
- 4:25it could be a year where they're fighting and then we get into a
- 4:2810 and two Iowa team versus a nine and three SEC team A9 and
- 4:32three Tennessee team, A9 and three South Carolina.
- 4:35I would. Love to have that argument in
- 4:36that debate. So are they closer to a 10 and
- 4:38two team, or a six and six? Team six and six, I think so
- 4:41too. I mean, we're we're going to the
- 4:43other direction because I think we're there.
- 4:45This team's going to be OK. I didn't even know if they were
- 4:48going to be a six and six team before Kanowski.
- 4:50Yeah, true. But yeah, I think they're closer
- 4:53to 6:00 and 6:00 than they are 10 and 2.
- 4:54Yeah, the number is now down to 6 1/2 at a lot of places.
- 4:57It opened at 7 1/2. The number I'm referring to is
- 4:59the wind total that's been assigned to their 2012 season.
- 5:03You bet the over or the under. And now that number is at 6 1/2,
- 5:06but it's heavily juiced to the over at 6 1/2.
- 5:09We shall see. Iowa State's remains at 7 1/2.
- 5:12So we look forward to that with Spencer McLaughlin.
- 5:14And then we'll take a look back. Our friend Chris Monster from up
- 5:17in the Twin Cities area. He does a lot of college
- 5:19basketball, but he has a lot of the college basketball into the
- 5:22NBA lot of really, I, I think a good resource when it comes to
- 5:27the draft. We'll talk about him.
- 5:28Did you watch much of it last night?
- 5:30I got in late, it was after 9. I was just like pick 26.
- 5:33I saw the back-to-back Brooklyn picks towards the end there I
- 5:36was not into. 27, yeah. I guess I did flip it out right
- 5:40away. Yeah, I saw Danny Wolf crying.
- 5:42Saw. His brother.
- 5:44Yes, the emotion that was covered there, but overall, I
- 5:48don't know why. He can't blows Trent.
- 5:50Is it as simple as that? I think it is.
- 5:52I think it's as simple as that. You just just enough Stephen A
- 5:55Smith. I mean, we we just would force
- 5:56fed him. This guy makes 20 million a
- 5:59year, makes $20 million and good for him.
- 6:02More power to him for doing it. Not my cup of tea, not my cup of
- 6:05tea. But apparently he must move a
- 6:07needle because the four letter network is is I mean that that's
- 6:10huge money obviously for what he does.
- 6:13And then the guy former GMI can't think.
- 6:17Of his Myers. Bob Myers, he's the guy with the
- 6:19squirrel on his. He's got the worst.
- 6:21Squirrel. I mean, it's, it's just awful.
- 6:26I mean if he needs to go see Leon.
- 6:27He does. And you know what?
- 6:29When you put the thing on top of your head, make it match the,
- 6:31you know, the actual hair that you have, the crown of your
- 6:34head. It's so obvious.
- 6:36But anyways, vague vanity aside, it's just not good.
- 6:44Do you think it is? It's not my AND, and I like Jay
- 6:47Billis. He's terrific, I really.
- 6:49And where's Fran for Schiller, who covers college basketball?
- 6:52Right, he's there, he's in buildings, he talks to people
- 6:55and not just goes to call a game, right?
- 6:57That's a guy that is in the. Lives and after soft days he
- 7:00goes watch his games. I thought the most compelling
- 7:02part, though, was Ace Bailey. Yeah, the 5T boy was he pissed
- 7:06off. Oh yeah, I mean, just trying to
- 7:08dictate where he wants. He wanted to go to a big market
- 7:10and he ends up in salt. Lake goes to Salt Lake City of
- 7:13all the places. Too fun.
- 7:15There you go. Big city life, No Salt Lake City
- 7:19I've heard. The sidewalks at 6:00.
- 7:21I've heard Salt Lake City is a beautiful city.
- 7:24I've. Only been to the airport.
- 7:25And. It's a beautiful airport.
- 7:27It's a vault. It's not what we well, you.
- 7:29Couldn't I don't think, and I could be wrong.
- 7:31Maybe this was just hearsay and I I thought it was a dry city.
- 7:35Not anymore, right? You.
- 7:36Couldn't get a beer? Right.
- 7:38And those laws drink have relaxed.
- 7:41It is. I know you can't bet on sports
- 7:42there. Well, and they'll be state #50
- 7:45right? A number, yes, I believe it will
- 7:47be state 50. Not that that's the be all end
- 7:50all, but this is. Kind of maybe just for us, yeah.
- 7:53Really. Yeah, Our show wouldn't play
- 7:55well there. No, not at all.
- 7:58Oh, we hope it does here. But yeah, but Ace Bailey going
- 8:01going to Utah of all places, just cracked.
- 8:04Yeah, he was pissed off. You know what pic I liked?
- 8:07I liked what the Timberwolves did.
- 8:09And I know nothing about the guy.
- 8:10OK, I I'll be. Honest.
- 8:11Tell me. Joan Behringer is his name.
- 8:13I think that's it means Joan, and that's Joan.
- 8:16Right, there's Joan here. It's my mom's name, Joan, but
- 8:19the late my, my, my, my late mother, 18 years old, won't be
- 8:2319 until November, right? So he's young.
- 8:27He is a kid that's played basketball all of four years,
- 8:31Four years he played soccer. And the reason he switched to
- 8:34basketball, he couldn't get shoes big enough to fit him.
- 8:37He's a Frenchman. He's from France.
- 8:40Who's going to tutor him? Rudy Gobert from France.
- 8:44This guy is as raw as raw can be.
- 8:46But if you're drafting on the come, I like the pick.
- 8:51What does this do for Luca Garza?
- 8:53No, yeah. You know, as you take it to
- 8:55another, 'cause he's under contract this year.
- 8:58Garza is, yes. Well, I think this is his final.
- 9:01Didn't he sign a two year deal? It was, I don't know if it was
- 9:03league minimum. It was, it was over $2,000,000.
- 9:05I'm not sure what league minimum. 4.5 over the two years.
- 9:08OK. Would that be league minimum 22
- 9:10million in that league? I bet it might be.
- 9:12Pretty close, right? And that's probably what he's
- 9:14like, yeah, he'll be an, he'll be an unrestricted free agent
- 9:17though after this year, right. So he's got one more year under
- 9:19contract, one more year with the T Wolves.
- 9:21But yeah, that's probably another one where you say
- 9:24developmental guy Luca Garza's not going to be a rotational
- 9:28piece for us. Right.
- 9:29A professional, good cheerleader, Yep, can go in and
- 9:32get buckets. And that's where he plays the
- 9:34five two and as an undersized 5. And but he is he's got a chance
- 9:38to opt out. So we'll see where it goes.
- 9:40But Luca Garza may be moving on. Who knows, maybe he might be
- 9:43back. He's certainly got a a cap
- 9:46friendly contract if nothing else.
- 9:47So as we go from our college knowledge of things into the NBA
- 9:51and careful walking in, reading up mock drafts, and I saw a guy
- 9:58that I absolutely love, I think it's going to be a stud, Jace
- 10:00Richardson. And he was mocked, you know, in
- 10:02the 15. I'm like, what?
- 10:03That seems low, 15 to 20, Like that seems low.
- 10:05And when I flipped it on, who's still available, really?
- 10:08Jace Richardson, he goes 25 to the Magic, who needed shooting.
- 10:12They went out and got Does Pain to help out with that.
- 10:15I don't think Jason Richardson's going to be an All Star, but I
- 10:19think he is going to be a rotational.
- 10:21Piece enough of him at Spartyville.
- 10:22I I love the dude. I know he's not real tall.
- 10:26He's not a point. How old is he?
- 10:27He's 19, OK, he's 63632. Guards are tough, I get that.
- 10:33But think of those rotational pieces, those those guys that
- 10:35come in and go way back to Vinnie, Microwave, Johnson and
- 10:38and go forward from there. Those kind of players off the
- 10:41bench that are important pieces on good playoff teams.
- 10:44I think Jason Richardson's going to be one of those guests.
- 10:46Not right away, but I think that's what he's going to
- 10:48develop into. Well, something worth watching.
- 10:52The thing that one of the other aspects of the draft, Dylan
- 10:55Harper, Ron's kid, obviously we know Rutgers.
- 10:58Rutgers had the 2nd and the 5th pick and they won in games in
- 11:00conference. That's tough to do.
- 11:03Dylan Harper's contracts going to be, I think, like $56
- 11:06million. Ron Harper and his career made
- 11:0836 million. I saw that tweet last night. 5
- 11:11championship rate, 5 for Harper coupled with the Lakers.
- 11:14Come follow with the. With the Bulls, three with the
- 11:16Bulls, three with the Bulls and two with the Lakers.
- 11:19And I loved him on the Bulls. I thought he was a huge piece
- 11:22defensively in particular on those.
- 11:25He was the post baseball Bulls for Jordan, right?
- 11:29Jordan came back to basketball and then Ron Harper was there
- 11:32and he played in the Mac, didn't he not?
- 11:34He did, yeah. He was a Miami of Ohio.
- 11:36Was he? I'm really good.
- 11:37Miami of Ohio teams must have been.
- 11:39So when he was at Cleveland, that was a dude that could get
- 11:41buckets, too. I mean, you go back to the
- 11:43beginning of his career and he morphed into this defensive
- 11:46wizard. And people talk about Pippen and
- 11:48Jordan, but also with the length and the athleticism that you had
- 11:51with Ron Harper. There's a reason that team,
- 11:53yeah, they scored, but why? They were still good
- 11:55defensively, Ron. Harper was a big part.
- 11:57He was a huge part of that. A guy with that kind of size
- 12:01AT6465 that could guard point guards that could.
- 12:04In that era of basketball, there weren't many guys like that.
- 12:08Kids going to put his name on a contract and instantly be 20
- 12:12million up on pops, but not the rings.
- 12:15I mean that to this point's got a ring for every finger on on
- 12:19one of his hands. Good stuff there.
- 12:20Let's switch to baseball anymore on the NBAII didn't spend a ton
- 12:24of time on a trend again. I just, the ESPN stuff, just I,
- 12:27I, I tried, I tried the Cubs and the Cards were on last night and
- 12:32I got most of my attention throughout the game last night.
- 12:35Cubs bats woke up. Boyd was terrific in the game.
- 12:39They'll play the getaway game today as the Cubs try to even up
- 12:42the series or the Cardinals try to make up some ground as they
- 12:46would take three out of four on the on the Cubs.
- 12:50And a big take away at the end of the game.
- 12:52Who comes in there for the final inning?
- 12:54Porter Hodge. Yeah, good to see.
- 12:55About there. I wonder what they're going to
- 12:57do with him. You know, leverage wise, if he
- 12:59comes back, he's fine. He's back to that mid 90s
- 13:02fastball live arm ton of upside going forward because the
- 13:07bullpens been so good and do you want to?
- 13:09MO yeah, they've had a little bit of a hiccup, but overall, I
- 13:13agree. Yes, overall they've been really
- 13:14better than anybody thought. I think they have the best ERA
- 13:17in baseball. Bullpen ERA.
- 13:19Keller. 'S been great, field bar's been
- 13:21great, Palencia that I think they found their closer and even
- 13:23pomerance. Yes, yeah.
- 13:25I mean, guys that you wouldn't expect him definitely stepped
- 13:28up. So kind of how you ease him back
- 13:30in because ultimately and most of those veterans that you
- 13:33mentioned, Porter Hodges, you'd anticipate a guy you'd rather
- 13:37have in there in a big 8th inning compared to those guys
- 13:40just when you're looking at overall track record and what
- 13:43they still can be. So that was one to keep in
- 13:45there. Gave up a hit but got in there
- 13:47and got the final three outs of the ball game because going for.
- 13:50Did you watch Marquis or did you watch Chip Carey?
- 13:52Marquis? Yeah, me too.
- 13:53Yeah, me too. But Yep, I I agree with you.
- 13:58And and where do the Cubs go this weekend, do you know?
- 14:00The Cubs are in Houston. Oh, that's right, because Kyle
- 14:03Tucker's going back to Houston. They made a big deal about that
- 14:06in the Brighton. Horton gets the ball in game one
- 14:08on Friday. Is it?
- 14:09Yeah. Horton against Walter.
- 14:12Good stuff. Caitlin Clark is hurt.
- 14:14Again. Again, and this time it's a
- 14:17groin. Twitter says it happened late in
- 14:21the basketball game. Where were they last Seattle in
- 14:26the Seattle game where they they won the game that she was back
- 14:30on the floor up up a dozen points with like less than 10
- 14:34seconds left. And I and I guess she got in a
- 14:37collision with one of the Seattle players.
- 14:38And apparently it might may have happened then, but I don't know.
- 14:44I don't know if we can pinpoint this groin injury and say this
- 14:48is the reason she's won for 23 as a lot of her, you know, her
- 14:52fans want to do. I I don't think I can go there.
- 14:56Is it something, though, going back to Monday?
- 15:00Tyrese Halliburton? A Sunday night?
- 15:02Sure. An injury that wasn't maybe was
- 15:05because another injury that leads to a second injury and
- 15:10that's where we're going and that's where my mind went right
- 15:12away because I didn't see what the injury was right away.
- 15:14Just heard that, got the little alert thing that she was going
- 15:17to be out tonight and my thought was, well, it's probably back to
- 15:20the quad strain and that's what it was.
- 15:22No, this is a new injury. But is it a new injury?
- 15:25Well, the fair, fair question. I'm I'm not sure listening to
- 15:30Stephanie White, it seems like it's a new injury, but I'm just
- 15:34kind of, you know, looking at it from 30,000 feet, if you will.
- 15:38I don't know. She says she's a fast healer.
- 15:41I'm not sure what that means. Does this mean she's going to be
- 15:44back? She's only going to miss
- 15:45tonight's game, but obviously not having the the second season
- 15:50that she thought that a lot of her what the league, well the
- 15:53ones that care about the league wanted her to have.
- 15:55So they have back to backs. They are in Indiana.
- 15:58Play tonight and tomorrow. Night and they play tomorrow in
- 16:01Dallas against Page Becker's. Now we know the WNBA wants
- 16:05Caitlin there. Yeah, get back to the narrative
- 16:07going back to their freshman years.
- 16:08Should be. I'd be shocked if she plays
- 16:10tomorrow because I play today. Then they're off again.
- 16:12They don't play again until July 3rd next Thursday.
- 16:16You know what don't they hit? Well, hang on a second.
- 16:17When is the what's that got that made-up championship in the
- 16:21middle of the season that they're playing for?
- 16:22Yes. When is that?
- 16:25I don't know. I thought that was early next
- 16:27week. I am not sure because what is it
- 16:30Minnesota against Indiana? Yes, yeah, I'm not sure when
- 16:33that one is because they they have a big break at least in the
- 16:36schedule that I'm looking. At I think that made-up
- 16:38Championship has grown. What is that?
- 16:40The Commissioners Cup? Is that what they call it?
- 16:42Idea what it's called. The WNBA Commissioners Cup 2025.
- 16:47Here it is took place. Championship game will be on
- 16:50July 1st. There it is so.
- 16:51Nothing my WNBA knowledge. Mr. WNBA over there.
- 16:55So that will be Tuesday night. Well, now you got to sit her
- 16:58down. Both these games.
- 16:59Yeah, for sure. There's no way you play her
- 17:00tomorrow night against Dallas. No, they're safely in the
- 17:03playoffs, right? Even though the record's not as
- 17:05shiny as it once was. Right.
- 17:08Yeah, because 88 make it. Yeah, they're good.
- 17:12Connecticut, no chance. Chicago, No chance.
- 17:15Sparks and Wings? Doubtful.
- 17:17There's 4 right there. It would take a well, one of
- 17:21these teams is going to be out. That's around 500.
- 17:23I still have confidence in the next 30 games that they're going
- 17:26to be OK. Yeah, I I do too.
- 17:28So player in the Championship game.
- 17:31Player July 1st against the links, going the wrong way.
- 17:36Collier's hurt, Banged up. So she's out for the
- 17:41championship. No, no, no, she's just.
- 17:42She was leading the league in scoring.
- 17:44She was, but she hasn't played in over a week now.
- 17:48Oh wow, that's not good for them.
- 17:50That's a good score. What kind of year is Bridget
- 17:51Carlton having a good. Question, don't see anything
- 17:58haven't seen it's fever only for the most part for me till.
- 18:02Tuesday, yes, that would be another team on the court.
- 18:05We don't know if Caitlin will be able to answer the bell or not
- 18:08in that one, but I would be shocked if she and you're right,
- 18:11the league does want to see Paige V Caitlin tomorrow night.
- 18:14And Paige Becker's off to a terrific start in her career.
- 18:17She really is. She's a nice player.
- 18:19And obviously television networks who had that one.
- 18:23It's not, it's not one of the big networks, is it?
- 18:25Ion has. Oh Ion, yes.
- 18:30Still, they got numbers. They do.
- 18:32Numbers that they've never seen before.
- 18:33Eye on at. Least they did last year.
- 18:35At least they did last year. Good stuff.
- 18:37Did you make any wagers yesterday after you left the
- 18:40stage? Did you get into any NFL props
- 18:43or did dig into any college stuff or anything like that?
- 18:46I told you yesterday, I started to look a little bit at the game
- 18:49of the year spreads that were out there, looked at the locals.
- 18:51Of course we get Kansas State, Iowa State, that's been out
- 18:54there for a long time now and that thing kind of continues to
- 18:58tick up because wasn't it 2 1/2 at one point?
- 19:00Yes, it was. And now it's up to 3 1/2.
- 19:03Is it the Avery Johnson love that we were sold, sold a bill
- 19:06of goods with last year in Vegas?
- 19:08Is it just Avery Johnson? What is it about Kansas State at
- 19:11a neutral field that they should be a 3 1/2 point favorite
- 19:14against this Iowa State team? Because I can't get it.
- 19:16I, I cannot wrap my mind around 2 1/2.
- 19:18OK, 3 1/2 I'm not there. It seems like as the game's so
- 19:24important that this, I know we say about the Cyhawk every year
- 19:28that you know, both teams, both schools, one school will
- 19:32obviously that will propel them to who knows where the other
- 19:35team's going to have some ground to make up.
- 19:37This is this is right off the bat.
- 19:40Both of these schools get thrown into the deep end in my opinion,
- 19:43because K State's going to be a factor in the Big 12.
- 19:45I don't think there's any doubt about that.
- 19:47K State is a major player in this league.
- 19:50I'd, I'd be shocked if they weren't.
- 19:54I was stayed beaten by what last year?
- 19:55Touchdown that game, that game was here.
- 20:03Is that the final game of the year?
- 20:05It was final game of the regular season.
- 20:06Yeah, 2921. Big Fox had it on that Saturday.
- 20:10Did they? Had the snow game the year
- 20:12before. Yeah, that was awesome.
- 20:14The obvious awesome game. So here's the reason that I'm
- 20:17ready to poke some holes. Avery Johnson was not the guy I
- 20:20thought he was going. To be no, he did not live up to
- 20:23it, I agree. So this team returns quite a bit
- 20:26of starters defensively. Six and three for Bridget
- 20:27Carlton, apparently. Thank you, Ben.
- 20:29Benny. They bring in three transfer
- 20:33offense alignment. OK.
- 20:37In August, Yep, this offensive line is going to be up and
- 20:41humming, coupled with a couple of transfer wide receivers and
- 20:44and they're talented guys. You know, I know they're left
- 20:46tackle. He came from Wagner, but it was
- 20:48a guy that was very highly coveted in the portal.
- 20:51Still 3 transfer offensive lineman, still a very young raw
- 20:54quarterback. And Avery Johnson.
- 20:58I I look at it and I just I can't get there with Kansas
- 21:00State and when I was looking at their future numbers and some of
- 21:03the over unders and to win the Big 12 and things like that did.
- 21:05You shoot your members of 8 1/2 I.
- 21:07Think it was. Right around Iowa State.
- 21:09It was, yeah. I'm just not as sold as in
- 21:13Kansas State being that good of it.
- 21:14They'll be 8 and four, probably again.
- 21:16Can you pull up the Big 12 win totals?
- 21:19Yes, yes, I can find them. I'm anxious to see if there's
- 21:22one that's before you look OK. Will there be one that's greater
- 21:28than 10? Will there be a 10 1/2?
- 21:30No, I think so either. I don't even know if they'll be
- 21:32in they'll. Because somebody will have 9
- 21:341/2. There's just so much parity in
- 21:36this league. All right.
- 21:37I got them up here and these are from FanDuel.
- 21:40That's where they first popped up, Arizona State.
- 21:43And these are just listed alphabetically, so we can just
- 21:45bounce around a little bit. I'm going to guess before I
- 21:47click OK, this is the 8 1/2 that Arizona State will be. 8 1/2
- 21:51back though, you're probably. Yeah, you're right.
- 21:59It is 8 1/2 -. 128 on the under over is plus one O 4.
- 22:04Who would be the next choice? Is it?
- 22:07BYU or Texas Tech. Utah was awful last year.
- 22:14I don't think they're going to get, I don't think they're going
- 22:16to get the love heaped on him, on them.
- 22:18There's a lot of folks that like TCU.
- 22:20There's a lot of folks that like Baylor.
- 22:21They've got a quarterback. I like Baylor.
- 22:24Of those two, I like Baylor more.
- 22:26I'll say BYU's next. BYU over under 8 1/2.
- 22:30Juiced under -170 OK Texas Tech also 8 1/2 juiced under.
- 22:37Everybody's going to be 8 1/2. 8 1/2 Let's see Kansas State
- 22:42again. These are from FanDuel. 8 1/2
- 22:44for. Iowa State 7 and a.
- 22:46Half Iowa State is 7 1/2 Who? Are we missing?
- 22:50Where's Baylor and TCU? Baylor's 7 1/2.
- 22:53TCU is 6 1/2, Oklahoma State's 5 1/2, Utah 7 1/2.
- 23:02There's one that surprised me. West Virginia was 5 1/2 and it
- 23:04just popped. Off Take the under.
- 23:06They're going to be that bad. I think, yeah.
- 23:09This is this conference, though. This is what it's going to be. 8
- 23:141/2 is the is the is the. Greatest number?
- 23:18That's wild. 9 and three, six and two.
- 23:20Very well could get you in the Big 12.
- 23:21You could go through the other Power 4 conferences and there's
- 23:23nobody, it's even close. I mean, I would think that for
- 23:27sure somebody's 10 1/2 in the SEC.
- 23:29Yes, for sure, for sure. Somebody's 10 1/2 in the both
- 23:33the ACC and the Big 10. Ohio State 10 1/2.
- 23:37Oregon 10 1/2, Penn State 10 1/2.
- 23:41So you got three right there off the top that are at 10 1/2.
- 23:45Go go to the SEC because maybe they're more because George is
- 23:47down a tick. And their schedule's really
- 23:49tough. They're 9 1/2, as is Alabama.
- 23:53How many times has that happened recently?
- 23:54But neither of those teams are at 10 1/2.
- 23:56But you do have, let's see here, Texas.
- 24:00Texas. Texas isn't 10.
- 24:01And a half 9 1/2 for the Longhorns.
- 24:05A&M 7 1/2 S Carolina, who people like put 7 1/2 for them.
- 24:09The Sooners are 6 and. 1/2 there.
- 24:11There won't be a 10 1/2 in that conference.
- 24:12No, there's not. Where's LSU?
- 24:148 1/2 LSU is. 8 1/2. OK, go to the ACC real quick and
- 24:19then we'll get Bill Seals in here 'cause I, I, I have to
- 24:21believe Clemson, they have to be 10 1/2. 9 1/2 Wow, now the over
- 24:26is juiced at -188 so you're laying a price there, but you.
- 24:30Almost have to go to 10 1/2 at this point.
- 24:32They're they would be getting very once it gets to two to one,
- 24:35I'd be almost every single time. So you got them.
- 24:38Miami is also at 9 1/2. SMU was the girl with the
- 24:42curling in that conference last year. 8 1/2 for the Mustangs
- 24:45this season. Louisville.
- 24:47I like them. 8 1/2 though. See, I look at that surprises
- 24:50me. I thought there would be more 10
- 24:51and a halfs out there in their respective conferences just.
- 24:54Got to be in the Big 10. Got to be in the Big 10 and
- 24:56you'll find them there. 8 1/2 is the highest win total in the in
- 25:00the in the Big 12. A lot of close football games, a
- 25:04lot of team, a lot of at any given Saturday, right?
- 25:07Going to be some upsets, at least point spread wise.
- 25:09We'll take your time out. Before we do that though, let's
- 25:12give you an opportunity to win $1000 in this bonus box

- 25:39Bill Seals. Next, it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 25:41Radio Network. Melody Condon, Welcome back,
- 25:51Iowa Sports Radio Network. We take you until 2:00.
- 25:54Let's talk to Bill Seals. He covers Iowa State for
- 25:57cyclonereport.com. I guess we can stay for a couple
- 26:00more days. Part of the Rivals network or
- 26:01can we? Bill Seals, are you officially
- 26:03moved over to On Three Media yet?
- 26:06Well, it's going to be July 1st guys.
- 26:08And that's also thanks for having me.
- 26:09Appreciate that. So yeah, the the full roll out
- 26:12will be on July 1st and just now this week kind of getting into
- 26:17some of the steps involved with that.
- 26:19So exciting time and lots to look forward to.
- 26:24Yeah, no doubt about it. Then on three does not have an
- 26:26Iowa State site. So that will be you and you'll
- 26:29fill that role and do so in professional manners.
- 26:32You always do Bill and I think that the view are the readers
- 26:36rather will benefit from that as I am a non 3 subscriber.
- 26:39So that means I'll get to read your stuff, right?
- 26:42Outstanding. Yeah, it'll be, it'll be great.
- 26:44You, you ought to get on the forum a little bit and, and
- 26:47start, you know, conversing with some of these Cyclone fans.
- 26:50You never know, you never know Bill.
- 26:53So let's obviously want to recap TJS first immediate availability
- 26:57from earlier in the week that was Tuesday.
- 26:59I guess where I want to start with you is, is the uncertainty
- 27:02of maybe that's over the top because I think Pluto is going
- 27:05to get here just just timeline just not sure right.
- 27:09I guess he's done all of the paperwork now it's just waiting
- 27:12to make it through the process, which may take a little bit
- 27:16longer now, who knows, but and any clarity on when plea may get
- 27:21here and once he does, does he hit the ground running right
- 27:24away, Bill? Yeah, I think he does.
- 27:26They it it talking to TJ the other day, I did ask him about
- 27:30Pleta and it sounds like it's imminent here.
- 27:32It at any time It's it's been approved.
- 27:35There's no there are no issues there.
- 27:37He's just waiting on the the go ahead to go pick it up.
- 27:40And then I think he'll have his bag packed and ready to go and
- 27:44they're going to need to get him up to speed.
- 27:46I think he's going to be an important part of it, this team
- 27:50with with what his skill set is. He's going to be Joshua
- 27:54Jefferson, obviously a very skilled forward.
- 27:58I think Pleida also lots of lots of skill to his game as well as
- 28:04we we've seen that in the German game.
- 28:06So yeah, I think it's kind of a similar deal maybe to what
- 28:11Hassan Ward dealt with. If you'll, if you'll remember
- 28:13when they signed him, it was a visa issue as well.
- 28:17And and he was kind of a few weeks late getting to summer
- 28:21workouts. Now.
- 28:21I, I hope that the ramp process isn't what it was with the song
- 28:26because basically it seemed like he was a couple months then
- 28:30before he really got rolling. And I I think with plea that
- 28:33they they need him to play some minutes this year as a first
- 28:37year player. I know you may not know the
- 28:39answer. I'll ask it with the house
- 28:41settlement. I guess one of the one of the
- 28:44issues that was lingering out there was the fact that foreign
- 28:47born players, they apparently weren't able to share in that
- 28:50house settlement. They weren't allowed to make any
- 28:52money and that they were going to go back and try and, you
- 28:55know, tweak that and and do the right thing.
- 28:57Do you know if that was, if that's been done, Bill, not an
- 29:01Iowa State thing. This was a this is a, you know,
- 29:04a college basketball thing or sports wide.
- 29:07Not that I'm I'm aware of I and I don't think it's really
- 29:10affecting Pletus status with Iowa State.
- 29:13So I think it's just something that'll that'll need to get it
- 29:16it's way worked out. But I, I would imagine that they
- 29:19will and in due time with with everything else that they're
- 29:23working through all the the wrinkles with that.
- 29:25So I would imagine at some point, but as far as him to Iowa
- 29:29State, I don't think that's really playing a role right now
- 29:32and in not being a part of that. Can you walk us through the
- 29:36timeline as you I know it. So Mason Williams injury, they
- 29:39knew there was some kind of injury.
- 29:41Was he on campus? Had he had been medically,
- 29:43medically checked out? Because then he'd go to the
- 29:45Dominic Nelson, which it it seemed like for 2-3 weeks, I
- 29:48would say it was kind of out on and then all of a sudden they
- 29:50came back in. So was it as simple as, hey,
- 29:52this Mason Williams injury is a lot more serious.
- 29:55We got to find some more money to go out and get somebody else
- 29:57and we kind of reinvigorate with Nelson.
- 29:59Do do I have it kind of right? Help us out with the timeline of
- 30:01all that. I think you're probably right.
- 30:04That was another another one of the first things asked to TJ on
- 30:08on Tuesday is is about how that whole thing played out.
- 30:11I think that the staff had an idea that there was some sort of
- 30:16pre-existing injury with him. I think until he got to Ames
- 30:21full time that even over his visit, I don't think they really
- 30:26did a like a physical or any like extensive health check up
- 30:30then. So think when they got him here
- 30:32full time, had the the medical staff take a look and, and
- 30:36determine that the severity of that, that they, I don't think
- 30:41they realized just kind of what they were looking at.
- 30:43So I think all along Dominic Nelson, if the numbers worked
- 30:47out, they would they wanted to have him a part of this class.
- 30:50It seemed like things that hit hot and heavy, I guess if you
- 30:55want to call it with Nelson when he was first rumored to be
- 30:59coming on a visit that that then was canceled.
- 31:01They moved it back a couple weeks and then things ramped up
- 31:05from there with Nelson. And we've seen that they've done
- 31:08a great job with those last entries from the portal.
- 31:12Like Curtis Jones was another one.
- 31:13They kind of waffled around with a little bit coming out of
- 31:16Buffalo and we've seen how that worked out.
- 31:19And and I think another positive with Nelson is he got here a few
- 31:23weeks early as well and kind of started that ramp up process and
- 31:27tweaking a shot. And I think you'll see a much
- 31:29better outside shooter than than what he's shown so far.
- 31:33I thought it had to do with Joshua Jefferson because when it
- 31:37seemed like they couldn't afford him, Nelson was on the radar.
- 31:41And when Jefferson decided to forgo, was it LSU that was going
- 31:44to throw the money at him, then it seemed like they couldn't
- 31:47afford Nelson and maybe he came back at a lesser rate.
- 31:50But I think I thought the Jefferson and Nelson kind of
- 31:54comings and goings were related. Bill, do you recall that?
- 31:58Not that I not that I recall. I think that mainly it was
- 32:02Nelson kind of being intertwined with Williams.
- 32:05You know, they were also involved with another guard as
- 32:08well that Andrew Roadie ended up at Wisconsin.
- 32:12I thought Iowa State, a lot of people thought that he'd Iowa
- 32:16State was a foregone conclusion until the Badgers kind of
- 32:20stepped up their pursuit. So I think that probably Roadie
- 32:24cost a little bit more money maybe than than the Nelson.
- 32:29So that, yeah, just that work, that working the numbers around.
- 32:32But yeah, I do think they probably had to open up the
- 32:35checkbook a little bit more with Jefferson.
- 32:37And then there's probably also a trickle down effect too.
- 32:40They can't go out and and pay Jefferson X amount more dollars
- 32:44without maybe giving Milan and and payment a raise.
- 32:48Otherwise, that creates a whole other set of problems.
- 32:51So question for you and and this could just be reading through a
- 32:55transcript. Wild speculation, but he brought
- 32:57up to Miriam Bateman and when you bring up a freshman, my ears
- 33:01perk up a little bit. They need shooting on this team
- 33:03and certainly now if we see the highest that we saw the last 10
- 33:06games, that's one thing. But if we saw the ones that we
- 33:08saw for the 1st 25, they need more shooting on the floor.
- 33:11Is Bateman that guy? Is he the odds on favorite of
- 33:14the young guard swing guys that's going to be getting
- 33:17playing time in your mind? No doubt and and he's been one
- 33:20that I've I've heard from the very start of summer workouts
- 33:25that he's looked at outstanding. So that carried over into T JS
- 33:30comments to us on on Tuesday. I think he's been as far as
- 33:35probably all around game. I think he's been maybe the most
- 33:39impressive in in that I think he's able to probably play
- 33:44enough defense to get himself on the floor.
- 33:47He's showing more of an all round game.
- 33:49I think Killian Torre defensively, it's hard to argue
- 33:53what he brings, but they're going to want to see maybe a
- 33:56little more often out of him. So I think Bateman probably a
- 34:00little closer to that all around type of player as a freshman
- 34:05than Torre is, But I think they still really like both.
- 34:08But yeah, I agree, Trent, even even with what we saw the last
- 34:1210 games of of Isy's season, they're still going to need
- 34:16someone like Bateman to step been.
- 34:19And you know, after kind of the way the way things shook out and
- 34:24then losing Jones's shooting touch, yeah, they, they, they're
- 34:28going to need a lot more than just Heisey's contributions.
- 34:31And I think Bateman's that guy. Yeah, Is Heisman maybe Heisey or
- 34:36'cause I'm sure they both do, 'cause Montjolovic's got to have
- 34:39expectations that you need both of them to take one more step,
- 34:43right? As Trent said, you need Heisey
- 34:45to be the tight, the Heisey of the final ten games of the year
- 34:48and Monchilovich just more consistency perhaps on a because
- 34:52we know he's got that game, we've seen it, but we don't, we
- 34:55don't see it consistently enough from where I sit.
- 34:58Yeah, I think consistency is the name of the game there, Kenny.
- 35:02One one thing is that, I mean, TJ really heaped a lot of praise
- 35:07or like heavy expectations on Milan on Tuesday.
- 35:12He said that he's a guy he expects to average instead of
- 35:15two threes a game to hit 3 threes a game this year and do
- 35:20it at over a 40% clip. So I think T JS expecting a big
- 35:24jump out of Milan and and yeah, they they'll, they'll probably
- 35:28get that, but hopefully with fewer peaks and valleys because
- 35:33we've when Milan's been at his best, he's led the Cyclones to
- 35:37some huge wins. He's put the the offense on his
- 35:40back, but there have also been some dips there too where they
- 35:44really had to account for some cold shooting there and get it
- 35:48from other areas. But the way this team is
- 35:51structured, they they need him to be a big time contributor and
- 35:55outside shooter. Over to some football recruiting
- 35:58wrapping up as a dead period is upon us with it.
- 36:01Of course, the big news for of this last month was what we saw
- 36:05from the decommitment of Jet Tamala.
- 36:07What can you tell us at the quarterback spot?
- 36:09Easton Webb was the name that we've talked about with you
- 36:11before, Bill, his timeline and the quarterback position as a
- 36:15whole recruiting for 2026. Yeah, I had, I had originally
- 36:19thought that maybe they could move pretty quickly on Easton
- 36:22web and and maybe get a commitment out of him within
- 36:26maybe a week or so after offering.
- 36:28I think we're we're still, I believe still inside that weak
- 36:31window from when they had offered him I think right at a
- 36:34week because it was Iowa State and Georgia Tech with him.
- 36:38It's still Iowa State and Georgia Tech, but he's in he's
- 36:41an Oklahoma kid. His dad played at Oklahoma
- 36:44State. I I would think that playing in
- 36:46that Big 12 print would probably put ISU in front for him right
- 36:51now. But now I'm kind of getting the
- 36:52sense he wants to play the process out a little bit.
- 36:56And I think this thing is going to carry into July and and maybe
- 36:59August, I get the the idea maybe some more powerful offers might
- 37:05be headed his way now the the words out to college coaches
- 37:10that he's interested in focusing on football at the next level.
- 37:14So I think it's it's just going to be a thing here where they
- 37:18and really they're, they're still pretty early in their
- 37:20recruitment of him as well. So maybe looking just to build
- 37:23that relationship out with him a little bit.
- 37:26They've got some other guys that they're they're taking a look at
- 37:30right now. No offers to any of those right
- 37:32now. I think Easton Web still though
- 37:34the priority, but it's going to take some time.
- 37:36Bill Seals cyclonereport.com Bill, thanks.
- 37:39When's your next basketball media availability?
- 37:42Is it on the schedule yet? It's not on the schedule yet,
- 37:46but I would anticipate maybe, maybe next week they're going to
- 37:50get one more in the following week will be Big 12 football
- 37:55media day week, so probably want to, they'll probably want to
- 37:58squeeze in one more football before taking that week off.
- 38:01So should be more good stuff though.
- 38:05The Dominic Nelson interview though, that was a great one.
- 38:08I'm going to have a feature up on him here in the next couple
- 38:10days. But yeah, that was a great
- 38:12interview with him. So lots of good stuff and we'll
- 38:16get some more input probably out of more of those players.
- 38:19We just talked about Milan, so probably get him as well at some
- 38:23point. Good stuff, Bill Seals.
- 38:24We'll talk to you next week. Thanks for doing this, Bill.
- 38:26Appreciate it. Thanks guys.
- 38:28Have a good one. Yeah, you do the same, Bill
- 38:29Seals, cyclereport.com as we check in on Iowa State.
- 38:33Take your time out, come back, finish up our number one.
- 38:36It's Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:39Hi, Mallory Condon, welcome back.
- 38:41Final couple of minutes. First hour of the program.
- 38:43I love when sports leagues listen to their fanbase.
- 38:47The NHL is going to expand their regular season.
- 38:51What? Can you believe it?
- 38:53What are we doing? This is 84 games now, 84
- 38:57expanding from 82. Who asked for that?
- 39:00Nobody. All right.
- 39:01And I love. Hockey.
- 39:01I know you too. I thought we were going the
- 39:05other way. Well, I thought so too.
- 39:06I mean, I don't want the I, I think I'm the one that likes
- 39:10June hockey. You know, the people that cover
- 39:12the sport wanted to be done around Immemorial Day.
- 39:15Get it done at no, no, no, keep it going.
- 39:17But good God, what's next? That is the longest season,
- 39:21right? From on the calendar, it starts
- 39:24preseason starts in like the 21st of September.
- 39:27That's stupid. And they crowned the champ in
- 39:29June. Right there is.
- 39:31No dime time in that. Last last week of June, the
- 39:34champion had their parade. Are they good God?
- 39:38So is it, hey, we're going to play in other places.
- 39:41There's going to be some special events.
- 39:42I just don't. Know that part.
- 39:44I know they're going to take away a couple of preseason
- 39:46games. OK.
- 39:47Get it? Yeah, but still, 84 regular
- 39:50season games. Gotta get that cash, I guess.
- 39:54Hour 2 is coming up next. We're going to take a good look
- 39:56at the Big 10. We're going to do more of this
- 39:58in the weeks ahead. Not just the Big 10, the Big 12
- 40:00as well. From other voices.
- 40:02We'll hear how the some people in the other parts of the
- 40:04country, well within the footprint of those respective
- 40:07conferences, how they see it. We'll start with the guy that is
- 40:11locked on Oregon, locked on college football.
- 40:14Spencer McLaughlin will join us to kick off hour number two.
- 40:18More on the NBA draft as well Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports
- 40:21Radio Network.
