Transcript
- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to the Spy Trader podcast !
- 0:04It is 2:30 pm on Monday , August 24th , 2026 , here in the Pacific time zone .
- 0:12I am your host , Barnaby Bullish , and I am so glad you could join me for our midday market checkin .
- 0:18It has been a bit of a whirlwind out there today as the market tries to find its footing .
- 0:24We are seeing a classic rotation where investors are moving away from the highflying tech names and tucking their money into safer , more traditional spots .
- 0:34The Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to gain about a quarter of a percent today , closing at 53,417.16 .
- 0:45However , the S&P 500 slipped just over a quarter percent to 7,652.86 , and the Nasdaq Composite really felt the heat , dropping pointsevensix percent .
- 0:57It seems like the big growth stocks are taking a breather while defensive sectors like Consumer Staples , through the XLP ETF , and Financials , via the XLF , actually had a pretty good day .
- 1:09Why the sudden shift ?
- 1:11Well , we have a huge week ahead .
- 1:14Everyone is holding their breath for Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh's speech at Jackson Hole this Friday .
- 1:20There is a lot of talk about a potential rate hike in September to keep inflation in check .
- 1:25On top of that , trade news is making waves .
- 1:29We just heard about fifty percent tariffs on Canadian cars and steel set for 2027 , which is making industrial companies a bit nervous .
- 1:39We also have the national debt crossing the forty trillion dollar mark , which pushed Gold , specifically the GLD ETF , to a threemonth high today .
- 1:49Looking at individual stocks , all eyes are on Nvidia .
- 1:52Shares fell nearly three percent today to about two hundred and eight dollars .
- 1:56That is a sevenday losing streak right before their big earnings report this Wednesday !
- 2:01Meanwhile , Micron tumbled nearly six percent , leading a selloff in memory chips .
- 2:07It was a tale of two retailers today as well .
- 2:10Target shares jumped over four percent after they used tariff refunds to lower prices for customers , while Walmart shares dropped over nine percent after a rare miss on their sales numbers .
- 2:21So , what should we be doing with our portfolios ?
- 2:25First , it might be time to look abroad .
- 2:28U.S.
- 2:28stock prices are looking a bit stretched , so consider something like the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF , ticker VXUS .
- 2:38It gives you exposure to international leaders like ASML at a much better price than many U.S.
- 2:43tech giants right now .
- 2:45Second , for the brave souls out there , this semiconductor dip could be an opportunity .
- 2:50If Nvidia hits a home run with their earnings on Wednesday , the iShares Semiconductor ETF , or SOXX , could bounce back fast .
- 2:59It is a highrisk play , but the AI demand is still very real .
- 3:03Third , don't forget your umbrella for this rainy market weather .
- 3:08I like SPDR Gold Shares , ticker GLD , as a hedge .
- 3:12With the national debt rising and global tensions high , gold is acting as a great safety net .
- 3:18Finally , if you are looking for steady income while we wait for the Fed , check out the iShares Core U.S.
- 3:24Aggregate Bond ETF , known as AGG .
- 3:27It is offering a reliable four percent yield without the wild swings of longterm bonds .
- 3:33That is all for this update !
- 3:35Thanks for hanging out with me on Spy Trader .
- 3:38I am Barnaby Bullish , reminding you to stay calm and keep an eye on the charts .
- 3:43See you next time !
