Transcript
- 0:02S1: A listener. Production.
- 0:08S2: Box set. Matt Okine and Alex Dyson.
- 0:14S3: Going for bronze.
- 0:17S4: Yes. And your boys, Matt and Alex are taking a
- 0:19S4: different look at Paris all week. It's up to a Friday.
- 0:22S4: What a week of action that's been. Matt Okine sitting
- 0:25S4: fourth on the medal tally and importantly, a few bronze
- 0:28S4: starting to get into the mix which, if you represent Australia,
- 0:31S4: will net you $10,000 in a little bit of a bonus, uh, bonus.
- 0:36S4: Cash bonus. Uh, but yeah, if you're from New Zealand,
- 0:40S4: it's donuts. That's a shame, isn't it? Uh, they don't
- 0:43S4: get anything.
- 0:44S5: We. I mean, should we set up a sort of
- 0:45S5: fund to help our our fellow athletes across the ditch to, uh,
- 0:50S5: you know, bring home a bit of bacon?
- 0:52S4: Yeah, I could look into it. We'll see. But a
- 0:54S4: lot of athletes are struggling, you know, not the few
- 0:57S4: of the big ones the golfers started. You know, they
- 0:58S4: get paid pretty well. The tennis players outside of things
- 1:00S4: get paid pretty well. But people like, um, Veronica Fraley here, um,
- 1:04S4: like American discus thrower, put up a tweet saying I
- 1:06S4: compete in the Olympic Games tomorrow and can't even pay
- 1:09S4: my rent. My school only sends about 75% of my rent. Um,
- 1:13S4: but they pay football players who haven't won anything to
- 1:15S4: buy new cars and houses. puts that, puts that up
- 1:18S4: on mine. Guess who? Guess who? Matt responds to it.
- 1:22S5: Who? Flavor Flav saved the water polo team.
- 1:25S4: It's our boy.
- 1:25S5: Flavor. Are you kidding? Flavor.
- 1:27S4: Right back on it saying I got you. DM me.
- 1:30S4: I'll send payment today so you don't have to worry
- 1:32S4: about it tomorrow. I'ma be rooting for you. Let's go.
- 1:36S5: Well, look, she could have taken things into her own hands.
- 1:38S5: Like the New Zealand rower did Robbie Manson. He has
- 1:41S5: set himself up with an OnlyFans account. Yeah, so. And
- 1:46S5: he said he's making it probably double what he makes
- 1:48S5: as an athlete on the on the off. So there
- 1:51S5: you go.
- 1:52S4: In both he's working with a cox. So that's that's good.
- 1:58S4: Good for him. Hey we got Georgie Parker joining us.
- 2:02S4: She's an Olympian. She knows what she's doing.
- 2:03S5: But now it's just us. Matt and Alex going for bronze.
- 2:06S6: Let's get this show on the road.
- 2:08S7: Let's go. Here we go, here we go, here we go.
- 2:11S4: And an integral part of the team is joining us
- 2:13S4: in the studio right now with a nine wide World
- 2:17S4: of Sports baseball cap atop her head. It's our commentator
- 2:21S4: and former Hockeyroo Olympian Georgie Parker today. G'day, Georgie. Hello.
- 2:26S8: I'm a company lady. That's what I am.
- 2:28S5: Yeah, the old salary, man. Love it, love it. Uh,
- 2:32S5: repping the colours at all time. Now, Georgie, were you
- 2:35S5: ever a little athletics person?
- 2:37S8: No, I wasn't I couldn't handle that pressure. I remember
- 2:40S8: doing my first 400 and then throwing up after, and
- 2:43S8: I was like, I'm sick. Worked out that it was just, uh, exertion, like,
- 2:47S8: you see, with the triathletes after. So. No, I worked
- 2:51S8: out that was the worst part of sport, and I
- 2:53S8: don't know why anyone wants to do that for their sport.
- 2:57S8: They're just nuts.
- 2:58S4: I remember wonderful little athletics, tried javelin for the first time,
- 3:01S4: go through, throw, hit myself in the back of the
- 3:03S4: head with the pole. I'm like, don't think this event
- 3:06S4: is for me.
- 3:06S8: Well, I wonder how some of them get involved in it.
- 3:09S8: Like pole jump. Who's who's doing that?
- 3:11S5: Yeah. Who. Pole vault. Yeah. It's it's difficult to get
- 3:13S5: into but Nina Kennedy looking very very good for hopefully
- 3:17S5: a medal. We've got everything crossed for the Aussies that
- 3:19S5: hit the track and field, uh, across the next seven days.
- 3:23S5: But Georgie, uh, we were watching The Walking last night.
- 3:26S5: What's going on?
- 3:27S8: Well, we won a bronze medal, but did you get
- 3:31S8: did you get PTSD? Do you get PTSD when you
- 3:34S8: watch walking? Yes.
- 3:36S5: Oh, bro I because when I found out that the Aussie, uh,
- 3:40S5: Jemima montag got the gold in the 20 K walk, I.
- 3:44S5: Where did you go? Yes, got the bronze and I
- 3:47S5: immediately I immediately went back. Georgie, I know what you're
- 3:51S5: talking about.
- 3:52S8: Two year 2000. When we think of 2000, in athletics,
- 3:55S8: we think of Cathy Wu. Cathy in the bodysuit winning.
- 3:59S8: We forget about Jane Saville. Oh my goodness.
- 4:03S4: Walking into Homebush Stadium, her hometown home Olympics miles ahead
- 4:09S4: walking for gold. She had about what, 450m to go.
- 4:14S4: About to go into the tunnel.
- 4:14S5: In the stadium.
- 4:15S4: And the the judge on the side holds up her
- 4:18S4: third red paddle. She's out. And then she's inconsolable, crying,
- 4:22S4: and there's no one around. Okay. Can we imagine.
- 4:25S8: Being that massive party pooper home Olympics?
- 4:29S5: No. Do you know what? I reckon whoever it was,
- 4:32S5: I reckon they were sick with power. Yeah, I reckon
- 4:35S5: they were absolutely frothing. They would have, they would have said,
- 4:39S5: I cannot wait to show this paddle because I.
- 4:42S4: Know how she felt, because same back at the Warrnambool
- 4:45S4: Athletics Club. Um, doing my walk, me and Billy Hernan
- 4:48S4: got disqualified red card and I was in tears afterwards
- 4:52S4: like I was walking.
- 4:53S8: Were you winning?
- 4:55S4: Uh. Probably not.
- 4:57S5: Well, look, it probably.
- 4:57S4: Wasn't the Olympic Games. It was a grass track. It was, um,
- 5:02S4: I mean, a little bit low key.
- 5:03S5: We've got to remember that for the for the walking judge,
- 5:07S5: that's their Olympics. To like this would have been. This
- 5:11S5: would have been their moment. Like, oh my God, I'm
- 5:14S5: about to disqualify someone on the biggest stage of my career.
- 5:18S5: This is the biggest disqualification ever.
- 5:21S8: They're on the phone to their mum. Quick, mum, put
- 5:23S8: the TV on. I'm about to go live.
- 5:25S5: I'm about to ruin someone's dream. Please watch it hit
- 5:27S5: record on the VCR. Please. Mum.
- 5:30S4: That's actually probably a pretty good, uh, good, um, profession
- 5:33S4: to get into because I judge how fast people walk
- 5:35S4: all the time, like they're in front of me. I'm like,
- 5:37S4: can you guys hurry up, please?
- 5:39S8: My walkers. I go for races when you're in the
- 5:41S8: airport and they take the travelators and I'm like, oh, guys, please.
- 5:46S8: Do you think that's walking? Yeah.
- 5:48S5: Well, look, there's been a few other disqualifications in the
- 5:51S5: in this year's games which we're going to get to
- 5:54S5: up next. Men, today we are in the studio with
- 6:01S5: Georgie Parker, our good friend. Hello, Georgie.
- 6:03S8: Good friend. Is that where we're moving to pretty quick.
- 6:05S5: Oh, mate. Oh, we're bros now. I'm loving this. I
- 6:09S5: want us to, you know, do this every day. We
- 6:12S5: don't need to do it for the Olympics. Exactly.
- 6:14S4: Let's Olympics ends. Why wait four years? We can talk rubbish.
- 6:19S4: We can judge all to one.
- 6:20S5: In the world. Um, now, look, Georgie, we forgot to
- 6:23S5: mention we were talking during the song that, uh, that
- 6:25S5: we didn't give Jane Savile the credit that she deserves for, um,
- 6:29S5: after the after getting disqualified at the Sydney Olympics.
- 6:33S8: Yeah, she did win a bronze four years later. So
- 6:36S8: we should mention that particularly on this show where we're
- 6:38S8: all striving for that greatness of the bronze medal. Exactly.
- 6:41S4: Bravo. Good work. But that's the thing. In the Olympics,
- 6:43S4: sometimes the judging, the false starts. I was watching the.
- 6:46S4: I mean, the Aussie girls in the four by 200
- 6:48S4: meter swimming last night. Got the gold. Brilliant stuff. But
- 6:51S4: I was watching the heats and I saw a changeover.
- 6:56S4: I thought, she's gone early.
- 6:58S8: 0.3 seconds.
- 7:00S4: 0.03 seconds, three hundredths of a second. The contact between
- 7:04S4: the wall when the feet left the podium to jump in.
- 7:07S4: It was so close to not getting that gold in
- 7:09S4: the heats.
- 7:10S8: Yeah, absolutely. And a British swimmer actually got, uh, disqualified
- 7:14S8: after his event. So he was swimming and he ended
- 7:18S8: up actually going underneath the water from the push off
- 7:21S8: of the wall on his turn for too long. So
- 7:23S8: he was just too strong. You know what?
- 7:26S5: I hate that you can get disqualified for swimming too
- 7:30S5: far underwater like that should be a gold medal in itself.
- 7:35S5: Like you're showing off. Well done.
- 7:36S4: Well, we were talking about sports that used to be
- 7:38S4: in the Olympics. Swimming as far as you can. Underwater.
- 7:40S4: Used to be one. Like a guy got 60m back
- 7:43S4: in the early 1900s, 60m underwater. It took him about
- 7:47S4: a minute, 68.4 seconds.
- 7:49S5: Yeah. Congratulations to gold medal winner of the 1900 Olympics,
- 7:53S5: Charles Devin de Ville from France.
- 7:56S8: That's a 1900s name, isn't it? Guys, I have a
- 8:00S8: bit of an admission, though, from nearly. Well, we made
- 8:04S8: a final, but we shouldn't have. Yeah. This is a
- 8:07S8: world exclusive. This is a world exclusive. I've actually never
- 8:10S8: admitted this anywhere before.
- 8:12S5: Are you. Is this. Oh my God. Okay, this is
- 8:14S5: on the edge of my seat. Go on.
- 8:17S4: This scene.
- 8:18S8: Forensics. But it was a World Cup and it was
- 8:20S8: a semi-final. And we went to penalty shootout. So in hockey,
- 8:23S8: it's eight seconds. You have one player against the goalkeeper.
- 8:27S8: And I was one of these players, obviously as a
- 8:30S8: star with this hockey side and uh, we're playing the
- 8:33S8: Yanks and they scored a goal very late. That shouldn't
- 8:36S8: have been a goal. And you get referrals in hockey.
- 8:38S8: But we'd already used ours and they got this goal
- 8:41S8: and equalised. And then we went to penalties. Anyway, it
- 8:44S8: was my turn to take it and I hit it
- 8:46S8: in and I walked back very quickly to my teammates,
- 8:50S8: and a teammate came up to me and goes, did
- 8:53S8: that hit the back of your stick? And I looked
- 8:56S8: at it and I go, I think so. And in hockey,
- 8:59S8: it's not meant to hit the back of your stick
- 9:01S8: or no one picked up on it. We made it
- 9:04S8: to the final. But my the way I can live
- 9:09S8: with myself if they shouldn't have got there in the
- 9:11S8: first place.
- 9:12S4: Oh, okay.
- 9:12S5: It was the way they always talk.
- 9:14S4: About the footy gods. The hockey gods smiled upon you
- 9:17S4: that day and even things up. Even the ledger.
- 9:20S8: I felt like Stuart Broad just standing there in 2013. Ashes.
- 9:25S8: That's how I felt. And so I try to keep
- 9:27S8: quiet about that.
- 9:28S5: Right. That's it. Yeah. You just zip the lips. Don't
- 9:31S5: say a word. And if the ref didn't pick up
- 9:33S5: on it, there's the chips, man. That's the game.
- 9:36S8: Exactly, exactly. But my one friend, Ash Nelson, she saw it.
- 9:39S8: She goes, did that hit the back? I think so.
- 9:43S5: How can you sleep at night, Georgie? Very well.
- 9:46S4: Uh uh, except for during these games, because you are
- 9:51S4: commentating late at night on the hockey. If you want
- 9:53S4: to watch it, George, you'll be picking up every tap
- 9:55S4: of the back of the stick. Uh, courtesy of channel nine.
- 9:58S4: Thank you very much, Georgie. It's always a pleasure to
- 10:00S4: hang out.
- 10:04S5: Matt and Alex, we are going for bronze. Hope you
- 10:08S5: having a good Friday and Alex Dyson. My Friday just
- 10:10S5: got better when I realized that the women's high jump
- 10:13S5: is on tonight. Two Aussies in the group stages, Nicola
- 10:17S5: Olieslagers and Eleanor Patterson. Thankfully they're not in the same groups,
- 10:23S5: so hopefully they'll face off against each other in the final.
- 10:26S4: Maybe do what the, um, men did three years ago.
- 10:28S4: Share a gold medal was the first time in high
- 10:30S4: jump history. Remember the Qatari and the Italian share in
- 10:33S4: that gold?
- 10:34S5: Absolutely I do. Yep. Snapped it right in half. Eight.
- 10:36S5: The chocolate in between. Loved it. Loved seeing them share
- 10:40S5: that one that was in.
- 10:41S4: There's so much great stuff coming out of the games
- 10:43S4: and lots of photos, great photos coming out of the
- 10:45S4: games like that. Brazilian Olympic surfer Gabriel Medina, who was
- 10:50S4: pictured after, you know, shooting off an excellent wave. This
- 10:54S4: French photographer took a photo of him finger to the sky,
- 10:57S4: levitating next to his board, which was also levitating at Chapu.
- 11:01S4: That was incredible. The photo of the, uh, the five four, uh,
- 11:05S4: Japanese basketballer Yuki Togashi, next to the seven four Victor
- 11:10S4: Wembanyama from.
- 11:11S5: Have you seen this? It's like the Japanese guard, I swear,
- 11:14S5: is up to Victor's waist. Like how you were supposed
- 11:18S5: to defend events against someone like that is unbelievable.
- 11:21S4: You need two Yuki's in a trench coat to equal
- 11:24S4: equal one victor in that one. Uh, but there is
- 11:27S4: one photo mat which has gotten an Australian in hot water. Yeah,
- 11:33S4: it was a photo that was posted, uh, by Australian
- 11:36S4: surfing judge Ben Lo.
- 11:39S5: Yeah. I feel so bad for Ben Lo. Um, Australian
- 11:42S5: surfing judge. It's. He's been removed of his duties at
- 11:46S5: the Paris Olympics after being photographed posing with, uh, Australian
- 11:50S5: surf star Ethan Ewing. Um. And he also took a
- 11:54S5: photo next to the coach, Bede Durbidge. Uh, they're all
- 11:57S5: in Tahiti, obviously. Yeah. And and he's. And, um, the judge,
- 12:02S5: Ben Low, is just, you know, the photo says three
- 12:04S5: straddie boys doing their stuff at the Olympics.
- 12:07S4: Yeah. shout out, it's shouting out Stradbroke Island, I guess
- 12:09S4: where they're all from. But when you're in the Olympics
- 12:12S4: and you're an Olympic judge, you need to remain impartial.
- 12:15S4: I mean, we all know the jokes about the Russian
- 12:16S4: judge in the diving seems to be giving a lot
- 12:19S4: of leniency, uh, to the country, men and women. So
- 12:24S4: the the boss has seen this and said, oh, you
- 12:27S4: can't be posting photos like that. We shall remove you
- 12:30S4: of your duty.
- 12:31S5: What do you reckon? I reckon that's so harsh. I mean,
- 12:33S5: it's not. He's not giving them a perfect ten. He's
- 12:36S5: just taking a snap with them.
- 12:37S4: Well, people have these policies, Matt, that you need to
- 12:40S4: stick with. I mean, even yesterday here on, uh, going
- 12:43S4: for bronze, which we did give, we're talking about the, um,
- 12:46S4: the water in Camperdown. We gave the load of water
- 12:48S4: authority a call to ask him about it, though. Oh, sorry.
- 12:51S4: We need these kind of requests. Take 3 to 4
- 12:53S4: days to go through, which is fair enough. You know,
- 12:56S4: when the government's involved, you've got to make sure that you're, uh,
- 12:58S4: you're doing and saying the right thing. So they checked
- 13:00S4: with their bosses. Um, so maybe, uh, poor old Ben
- 13:04S4: Low should have checked with the higher ups as well.
- 13:07S5: Yeah, absolutely. Uh, but, you know, we asked you, when
- 13:11S5: have you checked with when should you have checked with
- 13:14S5: your boss?
- 13:14S4: Yeah. We want you to get in touch right now.
- 13:16S4: When should you have checked with the boss but didn't?
- 13:18S4: We'd love to hear your stories when you're building a
- 13:21S4: house and build it with the wrong roof. Well, you're
- 13:24S4: digging a hole and you dug it in the wrong trench.
- 13:27S4: Whatever it is, let us know. Here on triple M,
- 13:30S4: you're with Matt and Alex. Drippy and we're going for
- 13:49S4: bronze as part of the big Paris Games. A little
- 13:52S4: unofficial look at what's going on, and I'll tell you what.
- 13:55S4: Out of the medal tally, Matt Okine Australian surfing judge
- 13:57S4: Ben Low has been removed of his duties for posting
- 14:01S4: a photo with the Aussie competitors. You don't want to
- 14:03S4: have a conflict of interest, and you don't want to
- 14:05S4: appear to have a conflict of interest. So instead of
- 14:08S4: asking the boss, go and always alright, if I chuck
- 14:10S4: up a selfie with the other strategy boys, he's just
- 14:13S4: gone and done it and it's cost him his job
- 14:15S4: at the games. So, uh, we've asked you when should
- 14:19S4: you have checked with the higher ups at work? Nick
- 14:23S4: has given us a ring. G'day, Nick. How are you going, mate?
- 14:26S9: Good. Matt and Alex. How are you?
- 14:28S5: Oh, good. Thanks, Nick. Uh, very excited to hear. Why?
- 14:32S5: Why did you, uh, you know, get in trouble? What?
- 14:34S5: Should you have checked with the boss first?
- 14:36S9: Well, I used to. I was a storeman for a, uh,
- 14:39S9: for a mining company, and we had, like, lots of
- 14:41S9: sites out west, and and, uh, my boss asked me
- 14:44S9: to send something out urgently. You know, we sent things
- 14:46S9: on freight, on trucks and and planes all the time.
- 14:50S9: So I've, um. I booked this thing onto a plane,
- 14:52S9: not knowing what it was. And, uh, anyway, it got
- 14:56S9: out there, everything was fine. And about, uh, four weeks later,
- 15:00S9: the boss comes to me and she's like, what's this
- 15:02S9: invoice for? Um, it turns out that the pallet weighed
- 15:05S9: about three tons and they dropped it on a plane,
- 15:08S9: and they charged us $15,000 to send this thing out
- 15:11S9: to say.
- 15:12S5: Oh, no, that's just for the freight. That's just for
- 15:16S5: the freight. Yeah.
- 15:18S4: Oh, a $15,000 courier there, Nick. So, uh, you should
- 15:24S4: have checked which kind of transport we should be freighting
- 15:27S4: this with.
- 15:27S9: Yeah, I probably should have checked with the boss. Yeah.
- 15:31S5: Mate, at $15,000, I would have bundled myself into that
- 15:34S5: package and had a free holiday. Yeah.
- 15:37S4: Travel in first class on your nick. Good stuff, mate.
- 15:40S4: Thanks for the call. We've also got Chris from Hawthorn. Chris,
- 15:44S4: what happened at the tree company?
- 15:46S10: Nat and Alex, love your work. Um, yeah. I used
- 15:48S10: to work for a tree company in late 90s, and
- 15:50S10: we had to go to unit two number three, and
- 15:54S10: we actually went to number 23. Now, I was just
- 15:56S10: a bag, a branch dragger. I wasn't I wasn't the boss, but, uh,
- 16:00S10: we cut down this, um, a tree. This guy had
- 16:02S10: grown for 40 years.
- 16:04S11: This beautiful flowered.
- 16:05S10: Tree.
- 16:05S11: That.
- 16:06S10: His.
- 16:06S11: Father had.
- 16:06S10: Planted who'd passed. And. Yeah. And we cut that down
- 16:10S10: and then. Yeah, but I guess somebody just should have
- 16:12S10: checked with the bus guys. You know what I mean? Chris.
- 16:15S4: You you cut you cut down the the deceased dad
- 16:19S4: memorial tree by mistake.
- 16:21S10: Year old tree was beautiful, had these beautiful flowers. And
- 16:24S10: I was thinking, why are we cutting that look so healthy?
- 16:30S4: And you're just trying to carrying the limbs off. Oh goodness.
- 16:33S12: Me.
- 16:34S5: Well, kicking it in the old churner up. Just hope
- 16:36S5: you gave him a big pile of wood chips in
- 16:39S5: an urn. Said. There you go. Sorry, mate. Hope they did.
- 16:44S5: So thanks.
- 16:45S4: Chris. And if you're out working today, maybe just give
- 16:48S4: that extra check to the boss right now. You listen.
- 16:50S12: To Matt. Now this is going for bronze.
- 16:57S5: Mitt is your boys, Matt and Alex, and we've been
- 16:59S5: going for gold this week and next as part of
- 17:03S5: the big Paris Games on Triple M.
- 17:05S4: But mainly bronze. Yeah, we'll let we'll let the professionals
- 17:08S4: go for gold. Matt. We're the kings of low expectations.
- 17:11S4: So we're going for bronze.
- 17:12S5: Gold. I mean you can find it in VCR cables.
- 17:15S5: You know, it's it's it's nothing fancy about that. I
- 17:19S5: want the good stuff.
- 17:20S4: Whereas bronze had its own age, the Bronze Age. So
- 17:23S4: there you go. That's what we're doing this week. It
- 17:25S4: is a Friday, so we've got to take you into
- 17:27S4: the weekend with a little bit more sports commentary. And
- 17:30S4: if you've been listening in you might have heard that. Yeah.
- 17:32S4: All the good all the good ones were taken. You know,
- 17:34S4: Bruce Mcavaney, he's already got the gig. Georgie Parker's already
- 17:36S4: commentating The Hockey on Channel nine, so we had to
- 17:38S4: look far and wide for the third best, the bronze
- 17:42S4: medal commentators, and we found them commentating. Bingo. Uh, over
- 17:47S4: at the old, uh, Caroline Springs RSL. Uh, there from
- 17:51S4: Granny Bingo. So let's see what sport they're checking in
- 17:55S4: with right now. Over to you, grannies.
- 17:57S13: And thank you, Matt and Alex. It is, uh, Edith
- 17:59S13: and Maureen here with Nange Wide World of Sport coming
- 18:02S13: to you from the Melbourne end of parish. And, uh,
- 18:04S13: today we are taking a look at the road cycling.
- 18:09S14: Road cycling of course a hot favourite for Australia in
- 18:12S14: the gold medal. I mean, Edith, you are a champion
- 18:15S14: through and through of this sport.
- 18:17S13: Yes, I have played quite a few. I'm very excited.
- 18:19S13: We've got a few hot contenders here, of course, from
- 18:21S13: Uzbekistan we've got Hussein Zubatov and uh, Jackie Hansen, uh,
- 18:26S13: from Australia. That little Pauline's nephew? Yes. Plucky little player from, uh,
- 18:31S13: up north up in Cairns. Should be doing very well.
- 18:34S13: Road cycling. Some countries, it's traffic. Other countries it's a sport.
- 18:39S14: The Netherlands, they they turn this off.
- 18:41S13: They would. They would say why I'm watching. That's right.
- 18:44S13: I'm watching a video of me riding to work. That's
- 18:46S13: boring for me. But for us it's exciting. Of course,
- 18:49S13: they do like to train in Melbourne, uh, because you
- 18:51S13: have to dodge the cars and the trams and there
- 18:55S13: is no bike path. No bike anywhere. so the Aussies
- 18:58S13: are a bit of an advantage with that training.
- 19:01S14: Often you see at the world on the world stage,
- 19:04S14: Australians turning up for road cycling and not really knowing
- 19:06S14: what to do. That's right. Yeah. They just sort of
- 19:09S14: get to go on and then and then all of
- 19:11S14: a sudden someone honks them and then they freak out
- 19:13S14: and get the train instead. And I don't think getting
- 19:15S14: the train I'm not an expert in this sport either,
- 19:18S14: but I don't.
- 19:19S13: Oh, he's just taken a little tumble there. Yeah. No, that's, uh,
- 19:23S13: that's going to take several layers of skin off that.
- 19:26S14: I just wish they'd bloody slow down a little. And
- 19:29S14: I've got another question.
- 19:30S13: See the one now? See that motorbike in the background?
- 19:32S13: He will lose points for riding a motorbike. Uh, that's
- 19:36S13: not that's not permitted.
- 19:37S14: I get my dinner delivered sometimes from the app on
- 19:40S14: my phone, and sometimes it says they're going to be
- 19:43S14: on a bike, but they come in a car.
- 19:44S13: Yes, similar thing can happen.
- 19:46S14: One star. Yes. I don't like the lying. Yeah.
- 19:49S13: Interesting move. They're coming around that corner. Uh, I it's
- 19:53S13: been a long time since I've played. I am a
- 19:55S13: world champion. Of course, I did win the 1956, uh,
- 19:59S13: road cycling champions here in Melbourne. I commentated that, Maureen.
- 20:02S13: I know, I've got to be honest with you. I
- 20:04S13: know nothing about this sport whatsoever. The win that I
- 20:08S13: had in 56 was purely by accident. Of course, Melbourne
- 20:11S13: was hosting the Olympics. It was very exciting. Some of
- 20:13S13: you might be old enough to remember, and I was
- 20:17S13: just down at Coles New World in Fitzroy, picking up
- 20:19S13: some groceries before I picked the kids up from school.
- 20:22S13: And I was on my bicycle and I came up
- 20:25S13: Elgin Street. I turned left on Nicholson Street. I didn't
- 20:28S13: realise I was in the bloody race. I had the
- 20:30S13: milk in my in my little basket. I had the
- 20:32S13: bread hanging off the handlebars and made little tassels flapping
- 20:35S13: in the wind. I was like to pick the kids
- 20:37S13: up from school. That's why I was riding so fast.
- 20:40S14: There's a podium ceremony. They go.
- 20:42S13: On forever. They go on forever. So, you know, that's.
- 20:44S13: That's actually how I won. It was a complete accident,
- 20:47S13: and I.
- 20:47S14: Noticed there was no shopping on their handlebars here.
- 20:50S13: So they have it a lot easier these days. These
- 20:52S13: young competitors. Yeah.
- 20:54S14: These sports, they've gone a bit soft.
- 20:55S13: I think they have. I think they have anyway.
- 20:58S14: We'll have more of the games, more road cycling tomorrow
- 21:03S14: and mountain biking, which, uh, for those of you that
- 21:05S14: will have a screen access to the games for mountain biking,
- 21:09S14: just looks like a bunch of people having a midlife crisis.
- 21:12S14: And they bought a new bike and ridden through the
- 21:14S14: dandenongs for it. We'll bring all of that to you.
- 21:17S14: Back to you, Matt and Alex.
- 21:22S4: And together, we've put together a big old week of games.
- 21:26S4: Adjacent contents. When it comes to what's happening in Paris.
- 21:31S4: And it's been a marathon. Matt Okine are we going
- 21:33S4: to be finishing with a gold medal, or are we
- 21:36S4: going to be finishing, like, the guy who died, who
- 21:38S4: invented the marathon by running from marathon to say, what
- 21:41S4: did he say to the Greeks again, said, oh, there's
- 21:44S4: a battle or something, I.
- 21:46S5: Don't know, but he should have used a rideshare anyways. Look,
- 21:49S5: are we at the end of every single show? We
- 21:51S5: like to give out our own medals to people we
- 21:54S5: think are deserving of our very important awards. And today's
- 21:59S5: got bronze medal. Um, you know, you might have seen
- 22:02S5: that the United States have gotten a little bit of
- 22:04S5: a boost in the medal tally. They currently coming second
- 22:06S5: with nine gold just underneath China. Uh, they have overtaken us.
- 22:10S5: Finally took him some time though, but I couldn't help
- 22:13S5: but have a little chuckle at, uh, this Instagram clip
- 22:17S5: from the Ugandan actor Abby Tumusiime.
- 22:20S15: If the USA is so great, then why did someone
- 22:24S15: make a USB?
- 22:27S4: Perfect.
- 22:28S5: Very good question, Abby. Good question.
- 22:31S4: Silver today goes to tennis legend Andy Murray, who officially
- 22:36S4: called his retirement after a loss in the doubles of
- 22:38S4: the quarterfinals of Paris. And it did not take him
- 22:41S4: long to throw his entire career in the trash bin.
- 22:46S4: He's 37. He's the only tennis player to win two
- 22:48S4: Olympic singles golds London 2012 and 2016. Um, plus his
- 22:53S4: three Grand Slam singles titles. And, um. As soon as
- 22:57S4: the game was over, he got online and he put
- 23:00S4: on his Twitter account. Never even liked tennis. Anyway, uh,
- 23:04S4: changing his bio from I play tennis to I played tennis. So, uh,
- 23:09S4: Eddie dropping it like it's hot when it comes to
- 23:12S4: a glittering tennis career.
- 23:16S5: Which leaves us with only the gold to give out.
- 23:19S5: And who could we look past? But, uh, the Italian
- 23:22S5: athlete Giorgia Villa, who recently got a silver medal in
- 23:25S5: the artistic gymnastics at this year's games but has gone
- 23:28S5: on to get a little bit of viral fame because
- 23:32S5: she's actually sponsored by a parmesan cheese company. So I'm pretty.
- 23:38S4: Sure just by parmesan cheese, like, is there a cup?
- 23:42S4: I think by like the type of cheese she's sponsored by. Parmesan, cheese.
- 23:46S4: Unless it's a brand name, you can only say it
- 23:48S4: in France.
- 23:48S5: That's true. Well, there's just all of these pictures with
- 23:50S5: her and cheese. Like big wheels of cheese. They're all
- 23:54S5: over the internet. Uh, I've never seen cheese look so good.
- 23:58S5: So this today's gold medal goes to a wheel of
- 24:03S5: parmesan cheese. Congratulations to the wheel of cheese.
- 24:06S4: I mean, I've always been powered by cheese, but I've
- 24:08S4: never been sponsored by cheese. That's the next step to
- 24:11S4: to glory, isn't it?
- 24:12S5: Here's here's the question, though. When you take a photo
- 24:14S5: with a wheel of cheese, what do you say to
- 24:17S5: the cheese to make it smile?
- 24:21S4: Are you saying because you just can't just say cheese? And.
- 24:23S12: Yeah, the cheese say cheese.
- 24:25S5: The cheese. Like I'm here.
- 24:27S4: Beautiful.
- 24:27S5: What do you want me to do?
- 24:28S4: Well, just like the marathon runner. We died at the end. Um, absolutely.
- 24:34S4: Carked it there. But thank you for listening this week.
- 24:36S4: If you missed any of the show, if you missed
- 24:37S4: the grannies, you missed Georgie Parker. The Matinales podcast is
- 24:40S4: continuing as normal. Uh, so jump on the listener app,
- 24:43S4: jump wherever you get your podcasts, and have a tune in.
- 24:46S4: Until then, we'll see you midday on Monday to wrap
- 24:50S4: up the weekend of games action. Until then, have a
- 24:53S4: good one. Got something to add to the show?
- 24:55S1: Slide into our DMs at Matt, Dot and Alex.
