- 1:30Speaker 1: fifty eight and the title is The Carson Arson Matter.
- 1:36Speaker 2: From Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar. This is
- 1:43Speaker 2: Jim Parrison Worldwide Mutual. Don't tell me, Jim, let me
- 1:46Speaker 2: guess what are you talking about the reason you call me.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I can smell a smoke all the way over here
- 1:51Speaker 2: at my apartment. Also, I heard something about the fire
- 1:53Speaker 2: on a news broadcast a few minutes ago. Yeah, somewhere
- 1:56Speaker 2: out on Albany Avenue. He said, Yes, it's.
- 1:58Speaker 3: The cash and Same market over the other side, out
- 2:00Speaker 3: of town.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And since your company ensured it, you want me to
- 2:02Speaker 2: go over and take a look, A good look, Johnny?
- 2:04Speaker 2: You're thinking if possible? Arson? I am okay.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Why that store is just one of a chain Hartford, Boston, Providence, Springfield.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I see, But how does that make it?
- 2:15Speaker 3: Arson? This is the fourth one to go up in
- 2:17Speaker 3: as many weeks.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Oh, the outfit that owns them having financial troubles. The
- 2:21Speaker 2: outfit that owns them is one man, Oh, John Wakefield.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Carson.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Then I repeat my.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Question, Johnny, if he is burning up his own markets,
- 2:28Speaker 3: if you can prove it, you can save our company
- 2:31Speaker 3: a lot of money.
- 2:31Speaker 2: That might cost you a lot of money. Jim, what
- 2:33Speaker 2: do you mean? Wait, do you see my expense account? Oh?
- 2:43Speaker 2: Bob Bailey in the Exciting Adventures of the Man with
- 2:47Speaker 2: the Action Packed Expense Account, America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance investigators
- 2:52Speaker 2: truly Johnny Dollar expense account submitted by special Investigator Johnny
- 3:10Speaker 2: Dollar that the Worldwide Mutual Insurance Company home office, Hartford, Connecticut,
- 3:15Speaker 2: following as an account of expenses incurred during my investigation
- 3:18Speaker 2: of the Carson Arson matter. Expense account had a one
- 3:26Speaker 2: a dollar and a quarter for a taxi from my
- 3:28Speaker 2: apartment to the offices of Worldwide, where I hope Jim
- 3:31Speaker 2: Perris could give me a little more to go on.
- 3:33Speaker 2: He did very little.
- 3:35Speaker 3: First loss four and a half weeks ago was the
- 3:37Speaker 3: market up in Thompsonville. How much loss in Thompsonville forty
- 3:41Speaker 3: one two hundred and four dollars. That was the smallest
- 3:44Speaker 3: one in the chain. The following week the one over
- 3:48Speaker 3: and four River burned to the ground, and the claim
- 3:50Speaker 3: on that some fifty eight thousand dollars dollars.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Nothing odd about that much, though.
- 3:56Speaker 3: The loss in Lowell was a bit over sixty fourth.
- 4:01Speaker 3: How much the claim would be on this one here
- 4:02Speaker 3: in Hartford remains to be seen.
- 4:04Speaker 2: How much coverage does he have on it?
- 4:06Speaker 3: Around one hundred thousand, I believe, yes, one hundred and
- 4:10Speaker 3: six thousand, and.
- 4:11Speaker 2: That's probably what he's gonna claim. Look, you can still
- 4:15Speaker 2: see the smoke out there.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Yes, And the telephone report I just got says it
- 4:19Speaker 3: looks like a total loss. Will you go over and
- 4:22Speaker 3: take a look at it? Sean Wakefield curse that's right.
- 4:25Speaker 3: His office is up in Boston. That's where his newest,
- 4:27Speaker 3: biggest market is.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Ah. How much insurance on that one?
- 4:30Speaker 3: Nearly half a million. It's one of the largest, most modern.
- 4:33Speaker 3: So I'm better get over and see.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Him in a hurry. You want me to get there
- 4:37Speaker 2: before that one goes up? Don't you expense accunt item
- 4:44Speaker 2: two four point fifty for a cab to the scene
- 4:46Speaker 2: of the fire. Way out on Albany Row. Three or
- 4:49Speaker 2: four fire companies were hard at it, but it was
- 4:52Speaker 2: easy to see there wasn't a chance of saving much.
- 4:55Speaker 2: It struck me that this location and part of a
- 4:57Speaker 2: brand new residential area, was about his fire and established
- 5:00Speaker 2: fire companies that could be. I wondered for a moment
- 5:03Speaker 2: if this was deliberate. I finally ran down Hal Gibbons,
- 5:07Speaker 2: an old palell and one of the best men a
- 5:08Speaker 2: Narson squad ever had. Take your nose up in the air,
- 5:11Speaker 2: take it deep. When Johnny you smell it, well, it's
- 5:15Speaker 2: not kerosene. Howe, I don't think it's cancelinge either. No,
- 5:20Speaker 2: but it's something highly implammable. The boys of that chemical
- 5:24Speaker 2: truck could get it out, might learn something first. These
- 5:27Speaker 2: stores always stuck a lot of cleaning flots stuff like that,
- 5:29Speaker 2: and lost of them are not implammable. Well, how much
- 5:32Speaker 2: honey look out? Yeah? Hey, hey, we better move back away? Yeah?
- 5:45Speaker 2: Must he get a pretty big start on the farm.
- 5:48Speaker 2: And Howe jo because it's so far out. It's like
- 5:51Speaker 2: the markets and Thompsonville and Paul River Lowell too. Oh
- 5:55Speaker 2: gonna makes you wonder, doesn't it. At this point, I'm
- 5:57Speaker 2: more than just wondering, Johnny, have you come up with anything?
- 6:00Speaker 2: Those other towns are out of my bailey, Rick, But
- 6:03Speaker 2: I know all the boys in the departments. Have they
- 6:04Speaker 2: come up with anything? No? And that's why I feel
- 6:07Speaker 2: I've got to get the first lead, if there is
- 6:09Speaker 2: one right here. As old man Carson showed up, No,
- 6:13Speaker 2: not doing any of the fires. He just sits calmly
- 6:16Speaker 2: in his office in Boston, mutters something philosophical about the
- 6:19Speaker 2: Virgaria's of fortune. Lets you go at that, and files
- 6:22Speaker 2: a big fan of insurance claim. I think I want
- 6:25Speaker 2: to see that guy, Carson. I don't think it'll do
- 6:27Speaker 2: you any good, but go to it. Know anything about
- 6:29Speaker 2: his financial situation. He's loaded multi millionaire? And boy what
- 6:33Speaker 2: I quail one? What's that meaning? A regular nut? Always
- 6:36Speaker 2: quote in Shakespeare, the Bible poetry. But a good business
- 6:39Speaker 2: man is sure he hasn't got some big investments something
- 6:42Speaker 2: like that that went bad on him recently. I'm sure
- 6:45Speaker 2: there has to be. Sorry.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I'll tell you. You gotta stay back of the lot.
- 6:48Speaker 2: I want to keep your job. You tell your chief.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I'm here, and I want to know why they fired
- 6:51Speaker 2: that out of hair. Oh who's that?
- 6:53Speaker 3: Now?
- 6:53Speaker 2: Look, mass I got order chalk on them. It's all right, Jerry.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I'll take care of her. Whatever you're say, mister Gibbons,
- 6:58Speaker 2: but I got order. Okay, Oh miss Casson, it looks
- 7:02Speaker 2: like you're losing another market, the fourth one, the fourth
- 7:05Speaker 2: one in a little over up. Hey, don't I know you?
- 7:10Speaker 2: I'm afraid I haven't had the pleasure. It's Margaret Carson.
- 7:12Speaker 2: This is Johnny Dollar, the insurance investigators. Good now, maybe
- 7:16Speaker 2: we'll get somewhere. Oh this is Walter Walter. Oh, yes,
- 7:23Speaker 2: Margaret Walter Smith written Hello all old mister Gibbon. Well,
- 7:28Speaker 2: the handles the legal end of things for Dad. Oh,
- 7:30Speaker 2: I see next, president of the company water, I in
- 7:35Speaker 2: the grocery business. Oh no, no, sir, thank you. The
- 7:39Speaker 2: legal end is enough for me. What do you think
- 7:41Speaker 2: about these fires for in a row? And well, if
- 7:43Speaker 2: I were you, mister Dollar, I'd suspect Urson's water someone
- 7:48Speaker 2: trying to put mister Carson out of business, something like
- 7:50Speaker 2: that father out of business with a couple of fires.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Mis Carson Man Walder. We've seen all. We need to
- 7:57Speaker 2: make the final report to Dad to buy mister Dollar now, Yeah,
- 8:01Speaker 2: I see you like a motive Johnny and Waller character.
- 8:07Speaker 2: If he marries Margaret Casson and he doesn't seem to
- 8:12Speaker 2: like the grocery business, yeah, but if he could get
- 8:14Speaker 2: the money from it. Yeah, I see what you mean.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Fact two of yours, truly Johnny Dollar in a moment.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Our flag now numbers fifty stars, and behind each star
- 8:42Speaker 4: there stands yet another flag representing one of the fifty states.
- 8:46Speaker 4: South Dakota state flag was inspired by a song. South
- 8:50Speaker 4: Dakota is the Sunshine state. A stenographer named Ida Ending
- 8:55Speaker 4: designed the flag with a sky blue background and the
- 8:58Speaker 4: blazing sun in the and the words South Dakota, the
- 9:02Speaker 4: Sunshine State in gold around the sun. Later, the state
- 9:07Speaker 4: seal was inserted over the sun, a seal representing mining
- 9:12Speaker 4: and agriculture, the prime pursuits of the state. The state's
- 9:16Speaker 4: banner also carries the motto under God the People rule.
- 9:21Speaker 4: South Dakota State Flag, the flag of the fortieth state
- 9:24Speaker 4: to enter the Union, was adopted on March eighth, nineteen
- 9:28Speaker 4: oh nine.
- 9:29Speaker 2: And now Act two of Yours Truly. Johnny Dollar and
- 9:32Speaker 2: the Carson Arson Matter Expense con adem three to twenty cents.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Phone call from a booth near the scene of the fire.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I wanted more information from Jim Paris at Worldwide Mutual
- 9:48Speaker 2: Information about the policies covering the thirteen cash and Save markets,
- 9:52Speaker 2: four of which had recently gone up in flames. I
- 9:55Speaker 2: wait in the phone booth until Jim call me back. Johnny, Dilly,
- 10:02Speaker 2: Jimmy here, Oh good, all right.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Here's the list of markets, Johnny, and the order of
- 10:06Speaker 3: insurance coverage, starting with the smallest demand go ahead, Thompsonville,
- 10:10Speaker 3: Faur River, Lowell, Hartford.
- 10:13Speaker 2: That's the same order in which they burned exactly, Okay,
- 10:16Speaker 2: which remaining store has the next biggest coverage, Salem. Okay,
- 10:19Speaker 2: I'll start with Salem. What are you thinking of, Johnny,
- 10:22Speaker 2: It's just to Hunts Jim. But well, i'll call you lady.
- 10:32Speaker 2: I had them four or five dollars in a quarter
- 10:34Speaker 2: for camp back to my apartment. I had them five
- 10:36Speaker 2: twenty one dollars even manage in my own car Hertford
- 10:38Speaker 2: to Salem, mass Despite bringing up the highway, it was
- 10:41Speaker 2: almost dark when I pulled out. The Salem was well
- 10:44Speaker 2: after dark when I finally located the Cash and Save
- 10:46Speaker 2: market again. The store was far outside of town and
- 10:50Speaker 2: it was a long way the nearest firehouse. I don't
- 10:54Speaker 2: know exactly why I went there instead of the main
- 10:56Speaker 2: office in Boston. After all, it was the same day
- 10:59Speaker 2: as the Heartfred fire, and the others had all been
- 11:01Speaker 2: about a week apart. As I said before, colored a hunch.
- 11:06Speaker 2: But as I pulled up in front of the place,
- 11:08Speaker 2: I saw the shadow of a man darve furtively around
- 11:11Speaker 2: the back of the building. As I reached the far
- 11:17Speaker 2: corner the building, I stopped, but with only the sliver
- 11:20Speaker 2: of a crescent moon, I could see no one Somewhere
- 11:26Speaker 2: ahead of me. I heard a door open, then silence again,
- 11:31Speaker 2: but somebody had entered that building. Slowly, cautiously, I felt
- 11:36Speaker 2: my way along the wall, and then I came to it,
- 11:39Speaker 2: an open door storeroom, but inside it was pitch black.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I drew my gun and carefully quietly fell around for
- 11:48Speaker 2: a light switch. After stumbling gently against a big packing case,
- 11:52Speaker 2: I found it. I hunched down behind the case, inflicted on.
- 11:58Speaker 3: All right?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Where I.
- 12:02Speaker 3: I heard you?
- 12:02Speaker 2: I saw you come in here. Now look, I got
- 12:07Speaker 2: a gun, so I don't try it ain't funny.
- 12:11Speaker 3: You'll hear me? Where are you?
- 12:13Speaker 2: Right over your head? I must have been on a
- 12:22Speaker 2: long time. I came too, lying on a cot in
- 12:25Speaker 2: the back room of single police headquarters. A couple of
- 12:28Speaker 2: gallon jars?
- 12:30Speaker 3: Can you hear me? Yeah?
- 12:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I can hear you.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Well, it was a couple of big gallon jars of
- 12:37Speaker 2: kosher pickles that he dropped on top of your head.
- 12:40Speaker 2: He officer, I'd like to split your head open. So
- 12:43Speaker 2: he brought you in here to headquarters and had the
- 12:45Speaker 2: doc look you over. He's now. Doc says no permanent
- 12:51Speaker 2: harm done, and give you a shot to make you
- 12:53Speaker 2: sleep and rest.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Now, how about this cup of hot coffee? Yeah?
- 12:57Speaker 2: Sure, about a dozen half friends. My head feels like
- 13:01Speaker 2: here you are nice, But you you said he according
- 13:09Speaker 2: to Ham, you left yourself wide open when you sneaked
- 13:11Speaker 2: in there after him and then to turn on the lights. Son,
- 13:15Speaker 2: you've got a lot to learn. Okay, So I pulled
- 13:17Speaker 2: a boo. But do you know who it was? It'
- 13:21Speaker 2: slugly of course, son? He brought you here? Who owner
- 13:25Speaker 2: of the market? What mister John Wakefield Carson? I am
- 13:33Speaker 2: six two dollars more knowledge on my car, this time
- 13:35Speaker 2: down to Boston and the main office of Cash and
- 13:37Speaker 2: Save Markets, to the private office of John Wakefield Carson.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Please be calm of mind, all passion spent, mister dollar.
- 13:45Speaker 2: What that's from Milton?
- 13:47Speaker 3: He said?
- 13:49Speaker 2: Now, look, mister Carson, about last night ad Off placed
- 13:52Speaker 2: tricks upon us. All he did zone bringing us together
- 13:55Speaker 2: last night. How did you know I was going to
- 13:57Speaker 2: investigate that market of yours up in Salem. I didn't, no,
- 14:00Speaker 2: But look you young man. Yeah, the fires which destroyed
- 14:04Speaker 2: those four markets did so and order their value to me.
- 14:07Speaker 2: So I found out possibly then the next to go
- 14:10Speaker 2: would be the store in Salem. Well, that indeed is
- 14:13Speaker 2: next in order of value. It figures or perhaps twas
- 14:16Speaker 2: mere coincidence. Those accidents occurred in that order accidents. Remember,
- 14:21Speaker 2: coincidence breeds further coincidence. That's a quotation from Bresco. Now
- 14:25Speaker 2: listen to me, mister Carson. So that reason I decided
- 14:27Speaker 2: to inspect the Salem store. Myself inspected, and to make
- 14:31Speaker 2: sure there'd be no possibility of spontaneous combustion there. Let's
- 14:35Speaker 2: get one thing straight right now, mister Carson. I think
- 14:39Speaker 2: those fires were set, and if you'll come down to earth, possible.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I suppose it Shakespeare who said fire answers fire through
- 14:47Speaker 2: their palely flames, each seized the other's unbu face. Listen
- 14:50Speaker 2: to me, will you?
- 14:52Speaker 5: Oh?
- 14:52Speaker 2: Of course, I think you set those fires, or had
- 14:55Speaker 2: them set. I think you were going to burn down
- 14:57Speaker 2: the store and Salem until I came along. When I
- 15:00Speaker 2: I saw you there, I thought that was surant. Oh sure, sure,
- 15:05Speaker 2: all right? Tell me this, what are you planning to
- 15:07Speaker 2: do with the insurance money if you get it? Rebuild
- 15:11Speaker 2: bigger and better stores where the old ones stood? No,
- 15:14Speaker 2: or did you find out you hadn't made them big
- 15:16Speaker 2: and modern enough for those real estate developments where they
- 15:19Speaker 2: were located? And decided the cheapest way for you know,
- 15:23Speaker 2: no to build again with tragic dealt the faith. I
- 15:27Speaker 2: guess the fancy quotes and answer my questions. Said you
- 15:30Speaker 2: tread upon my patience, sir. Look, it's most enough to
- 15:33Speaker 2: make a deacon swear, answered by James Russell. It's to Carson,
- 15:36Speaker 2: what disposition of the funds I choose to make is
- 15:39Speaker 2: mine alone to settle? And from my heart, Canson, enough,
- 15:45Speaker 2: I've had enough of this and I'll be on your way.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Oh wait a minute, gone, Dollar and dirt me. No,
- 15:51Speaker 2: no more, you wait from your heart you said, Now
- 15:55Speaker 2: I have said enough. Henceforth my lips are seen. Okay, okay,
- 15:59Speaker 2: but you know something I think you've told me who
- 16:02Speaker 2: might have set those fires? And if you'll answer me
- 16:05Speaker 2: just one more question now? Okay, we'll see act three
- 16:22Speaker 2: of yours, truly Johnny Dollar in a moment.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Sometimes we may wonder why a football team doesn't quit
- 16:28Speaker 5: playing and walk off the field when it finds itself
- 16:30Speaker 5: fifty points behind with only a few minutes of play
- 16:33Speaker 5: to go. What is that indomitable spirit that fills men
- 16:37Speaker 5: with hope and keeps them going in spite of terrific gods?
- 16:41Speaker 5: Keeps them going just to play the game according to
- 16:43Speaker 5: the rules, just to get the job done as well
- 16:46Speaker 5: as they know how. This kind of spirit pervaded the
- 16:49Speaker 5: feelings of heavy bomber crews of the Night There Force
- 16:52Speaker 5: on that day of Glory August first, nineteen forty three,
- 16:55Speaker 5: the day of one of the most secretly planned surprise
- 16:58Speaker 5: bombing missions of World War Two. Up the day of
- 17:01Speaker 5: the low level attack on the Romanian oil refineries at Roeshte,
- 17:06Speaker 5: more than one hundred seventy be twenty four heavily loaded
- 17:08Speaker 5: bombers took off in a swirl of red dust from Benghazi, Libya,
- 17:12Speaker 5: to bomb a highly defended priority target. The element of
- 17:15Speaker 5: surprise in the low level attack was to be one
- 17:18Speaker 5: of their greatest weapons, but things went wrong from the start.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Three planes exploded during takeoff operations, eleven more aborted due
- 17:26Speaker 5: to engine trouble. Of those that reached the target area,
- 17:29Speaker 5: less than one third returned to home base. The leaders
- 17:33Speaker 5: of the mission encountered navigation difficulties and difficulty in identifying
- 17:37Speaker 5: the specific targets, and due to the loss of that
- 17:39Speaker 5: elemental hope surprise, they also encountered devastating enemy firepower from
- 17:45Speaker 5: flak and fighters. The mission was partially successful, but a
- 17:50Speaker 5: horrifying experience. Five medals of Honor were awarded to the
- 17:54Speaker 5: heroes of the ployche To Raid for valorous action above
- 17:57Speaker 5: and beyond the call of duty. Anytime the men would
- 18:00Speaker 5: have been justified in turning back, but they had a
- 18:04Speaker 5: code of conduct that made them want to see the
- 18:06Speaker 5: unequal game through to the end. It was a job
- 18:09Speaker 5: that had to be done. A charge of the light
- 18:12Speaker 5: brigade in the air as they flew down the valley
- 18:14Speaker 5: of death to glory and no act three of yours truly,
- 18:18Speaker 5: Johnny Dollar and the Carson Arson Matter.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Expense account. I hadem seven eighty cents phone called the
- 18:32Speaker 2: hell Gibbons and the Arson squad back in Hartford.
- 18:34Speaker 6: Yeah, Johnny, I finally found plenty in the remains of
- 18:37Speaker 6: that fire, and it was arson by some rank amateur.
- 18:41Speaker 3: That's where it was hard to spot.
- 18:42Speaker 2: What do you mean when a pro sense of blaze,
- 18:45Speaker 2: we know what to look for. I see what about
- 18:48Speaker 2: the other three fires?
- 18:49Speaker 6: I call the boys in those cities. Immediately heard back
- 18:53Speaker 6: from them this morning, same story.
- 18:55Speaker 2: All right, have you checked on Waller what's his name?
- 18:57Speaker 2: The fiance of Carson's daughter. Your main stepdaughter, stepdaughter I have,
- 19:03Speaker 2: and that's what stops me alibis huh perfect?
- 19:06Speaker 6: Walter Smitton couldn't possibly have started those fires.
- 19:09Speaker 2: I didn't think so. Now that boy may call himself
- 19:12Speaker 2: a lawyer, how but he just hasn't the nerve, the gumption.
- 19:14Speaker 6: But who else he stuns the benefit if he marries
- 19:18Speaker 6: Margaret Carson? Surely you don't think Carson himself.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Call a Boston police. Will you have to meet me
- 19:25Speaker 2: at Carson's office? What far? Maybe to make an arrest?
- 19:29Speaker 3: Do that for me? Will you.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Munch? Maybe it was more than a munch now. Sure,
- 19:40Speaker 2: I know there was no real clues in the case,
- 19:43Speaker 2: but maybe for once I could get along without them.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I went back to Carson's office, and I must confess
- 19:48Speaker 2: tried a little bluff court. You'd hailed me into court.
- 19:52Speaker 2: That's right, unless you open up and tell me what
- 19:54Speaker 2: I want to know. Very well, speak to me as
- 19:57Speaker 2: to thy thinkings, as thou dost, and you can forget
- 20:00Speaker 2: the quotations. Walace Smitten is your lawyer.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Isn't he a.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Timid but an eager lad who saved me many a fall?
- 20:06Speaker 2: You'll like him like a son? Why would he wear
- 20:09Speaker 2: my son? Or, as the Bible says, a wise son
- 20:12Speaker 2: maketh a hide all right, h yes, yes you have
- 20:15Speaker 2: a stepdaughter, Margaret alas I have. Okay, Now, who is
- 20:21Speaker 2: to get the insurance money? You may collect? All that
- 20:23Speaker 2: there is none of your concern. You're going to talk now,
- 20:26Speaker 2: mister Carson, and family matter. Who gets it?
- 20:33Speaker 3: Hi?
- 20:34Speaker 2: I pledged my wife before she died, Margaret would have
- 20:37Speaker 2: all money is from any profit, any monetary gain of
- 20:40Speaker 2: any kind of any of my ventures, that would include
- 20:44Speaker 2: the insurance money. I see that, mister Dollar, was my pledge.
- 20:48Speaker 2: You know how I have rut it. Why do you
- 20:51Speaker 2: say that she's not of my blood, mister Dollar? She
- 20:54Speaker 2: has no soul for art of poetry, and since she's
- 20:58Speaker 2: come of age, she's made so many man's upon me
- 21:01Speaker 2: Monday Monday money. That's all she thinks of. Unlike water,
- 21:05Speaker 2: She's so bold, aggressive, headstrong. Were it not for Walter,
- 21:10Speaker 2: I'd mistrust her every move. But if he's in love
- 21:12Speaker 2: with her, because she demands, he'd be and why so
- 21:16Speaker 2: she can use his legal guidance in her fight to
- 21:19Speaker 2: take this business away from me. All right, mister Carson,
- 21:23Speaker 2: I haven't notified the authorities yet, but I've found proof
- 21:26Speaker 2: that Margaret is the one who started those fires. You what,
- 21:30Speaker 2: and you just told me why because the money would
- 21:33Speaker 2: go to her. Oh, mister, I'm glad I've suspected. Yes,
- 21:39Speaker 2: but because of family honor. No, no, no, I'm glad
- 21:41Speaker 2: you have proof long last. It will take her. Take
- 21:45Speaker 2: this millstone from about my neck proof? Mark, Well, allah,
- 21:50Speaker 2: you'll never live to tell the authorities that gun. Unless
- 21:54Speaker 2: you'd like to make a deal, Johnny, it'd be with
- 21:57Speaker 2: a lot of money to you. I'd even promise not
- 21:59Speaker 2: to set anymore. Oh, you are right, mister dollar. Unless
- 22:02Speaker 2: I'm mistaken Margaret. The man who just came in what
- 22:06Speaker 2: you heard your little confession is from the police department.
- 22:08Speaker 6: You're trying to make me look around so you can
- 22:10Speaker 6: grab for this gun.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Oh no, Bak remains. He's standing right in the back
- 22:14Speaker 2: of you.
- 22:15Speaker 3: That's right, Mark.
- 22:16Speaker 2: No, Oh, my head, my hand, how shopper than a
- 22:24Speaker 2: serpent's tooth. Is an ungrateful child. Yeah, the company won't
- 22:37Speaker 2: have to pay on those four markets, and the courts
- 22:40Speaker 2: will have to take care of market. I'm sure they will.
- 22:43Speaker 2: And next time we'll give me something clean to work on.
- 22:47Speaker 2: I hate this kind of stuff expensive count total including
- 22:50Speaker 2: the trip home fifty six dollars ninety cents. Yours, truly,
- 22:54Speaker 2: Johnny Dollar. Our star will return in just a moment.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Our flag now numbers fifty stars, and behind each star
- 23:15Speaker 2: there stands yet another flag, representing one of the fifty states.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Oklahoma's state flag depicts an osage warrior's circular buckskin shield
- 23:25Speaker 2: from which hang seven eagle feathers. Across the shield is
- 23:29Speaker 2: the Indian's calumet or pithe of peace, crossed with a
- 23:33Speaker 2: white man's peace symbol. The olive branch. On the shield
- 23:37Speaker 2: are small crosses the Indians graphics sign for stars, indicating
- 23:42Speaker 2: lofty ideals or a purpose for high endeavor. The background of.
- 23:47Speaker 4: The flag is a field of blue, the blue of
- 23:50Speaker 4: the Oklahoma sky, signifying loyalty and devotion. The important symbols, however,
- 23:56Speaker 4: are the calumet and the olive branch. The override the
- 24:01Speaker 4: shield the symbol of war, and we speak a predominant
- 24:04Speaker 4: love of peace by a United people. Oklahoma state flag,
- 24:09Speaker 4: the flag of the forty sixth state to enter the Union,
- 24:12Speaker 4: was adopted on April second, nineteen twenty five. Now here's
- 24:16Speaker 4: our star to tell you about next week's story.

- 27:37Speaker 8: That's OTR Westerns dot com slash Live. You're listening to
- 27:41Speaker 8: the great detectives of old time Radio with Adam Graham
- 27:44Speaker 8: and now let's get back into the show.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Welcome back. I have to give Jack Johnstone credit. Too
- 27:57Speaker 1: often in the past, he's in it inexplicable policeman showing
- 28:04Speaker 1: up in the nick of time. This time he firmly
- 28:07Speaker 1: established that there'll be a policeman there, so that's all good.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I was taken in by the commercials the public service
- 28:15Speaker 1: announcement for South Dakota, particularly the reference to it as
- 28:20Speaker 1: the Sunshine State, because I typically apply that to Florida,
- 28:26Speaker 1: but researching it, that was a big thing in South Dakota.
- 28:31Speaker 1: How about nineteen ninety two when their flag changed to
- 28:36Speaker 1: reflect it as the Rushmore State. The state motto had
- 28:40Speaker 1: actually changed the Rushmore State in nineteen eighty three, but
- 28:45Speaker 1: the state flag lagged for several years. Actually, the flag
- 28:50Speaker 1: does give us a little bit of a clue as
- 28:52Speaker 1: to win. This program was rebroadcast because we know that
- 28:57Speaker 1: the original commercial broadcast of this episode of Johnny Dollar
- 29:01Speaker 1: was over CBS. But when was this broadcast the recording
- 29:07Speaker 1: we're listening to sent out over the Armed Forces Radio
- 29:10Speaker 1: and Television Service, Well, it was sometime after nineteen sixty three.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Because the changes to the flag that they described occurred
- 29:21Speaker 1: in nineteen sixty three, and this may be another part
- 29:25Speaker 1: of the reason of what makes Johnny Dollar so popular.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Is it finished airing in the US in the United
- 29:35Speaker 1: States on civilian radio in nineteen sixty two, but it
- 29:40Speaker 1: continued to air overseas on military installations through the Armed
- 29:46Speaker 1: Forces Radio and Television Service for many years after that
- 29:51Speaker 1: into the even the nineteen seventies. But at any rate,
- 29:55Speaker 1: we do turn to some listener comments and feedback. Have
- 29:59Speaker 1: a comment from Rebecca who writes, I love the Johnny
- 30:04Speaker 1: Dollar episodes. My seven year old listens to them with
- 30:07Speaker 1: me all the time. Well, it's great to be able
- 30:09Speaker 1: to offer us program that people can listen to with
- 30:13Speaker 1: their children. Thanks so much for listening out there, Rebecca
- 30:17Speaker 1: and child. And then we do have a comment from Donald,
- 30:25Speaker 1: who writes, I listened to the second app extra from
- 30:29Speaker 1: August twenty thirteen last night. It was the story of
- 30:32Speaker 1: Basil Izzy, who floated in a raft for eighty three
- 30:36Speaker 1: days after being torpedoed in World War Two. I googled
- 30:41Speaker 1: Basil Izzy and found a bridge dedication to him in
- 30:44Speaker 1: mate of this year. It takes quite a while for
- 30:47Speaker 1: some people to be recognized well, thanks so much. I'm
- 30:50Speaker 1: glad you enjoyed the app extra, Donald, And in one way,
- 30:56Speaker 1: I'm glad when I hear of something being dedicated to
- 30:59Speaker 1: a war World War two hero, even if they're no
- 31:03Speaker 1: longer around to enjoy it. It's a sign that people
- 31:06Speaker 1: I still remember, and I think that one thing that
- 31:13Speaker 1: concerns me is just losing that history. I will say
- 31:18Speaker 1: that app extras were kind of part of my impetus
- 31:23Speaker 1: and foundation of doing the war, because when I do
- 31:27Speaker 1: the extras for the app and for the premium sit
- 31:31Speaker 1: I generally will go out and pick out programs in
- 31:34Speaker 1: which the leak characters in our detective programs appear in
- 31:40Speaker 1: some other role. And I think long Clark appeared in
- 31:43Speaker 1: that lawn Clark also appeared and Death Comes to Adolf Hitler,
- 31:48Speaker 1: which was the only probably one of my favorite ghost stars,
- 31:52Speaker 1: and I don't care for him much, but I could
- 31:55Speaker 1: definitely understand the appeal, particularly during World War Two. And
- 31:59Speaker 1: if you do enjoy World War Two stories, I do
- 32:02Speaker 1: encourage listeners check out The War the War dot Great
- 32:06Speaker 1: Detectives dot net. It's two hundred and seventy six episodes
- 32:10Speaker 1: of wartime programs. The News speeches, dramas, comedies, music, We

- 32:36Speaker 1: do encourage you. If you're interested in that era, or
