- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy into the world. So welcome to the Coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. Let's do a little talk about
- 0:31business since it's the end of the year and we're wrapping
- 0:33things up. A lot of people are asking
- 0:36questions about building their business or working with the
- 0:39people within their business, whether it's their business and
- 0:42they're trying to lead A-Team or they work among A-Team.
- 0:45Lots of these questions are coming up.
- 0:47So I would like to address the very first and foremost
- 0:49important one in my mind, which is do your, do your teams or do
- 0:55your people really trust you? It's a very, very touchy
- 0:59question because most people want to say, yes, of course they
- 1:01trust me. And that's probably not
- 1:04accurate. The truth is that most people
- 1:08believe other people trust them and that they're saying that
- 1:12what whatever is happening in their head, they're telling the
- 1:15truth. The reality is that's not what's
- 1:17happening most of the time. I'll go so far as to say 90% of
- 1:23the time people are filtering, they're constantly filtering.
- 1:28And those that don't filter are the ones that we think are
- 1:31crazy. Like Can you believe that he
- 1:32said that? Can you believe she acted that
- 1:34way? What were they thinking?
- 1:36You know, whatever it is it it's we, we tend to say that we're
- 1:41not filtering, but we are. We're proceeding with caution.
- 1:45We're making sure we're speaking.
- 1:47And I'll be the first one to say that all the business clients
- 1:51that I coach, I am constantly working with them.
- 1:55And I do mean that constantly working with them on how to
- 2:01direct an answer, how to frame an answer, how to scope an
- 2:04answer because it's that important how you want to say
- 2:08something. What you, what language are you
- 2:10using? Remember, the word spelling
- 2:14really is about casting spells with words.
- 2:17That's where it came from. That's the root of that word.
- 2:20So you are casting spells with your words.
- 2:23I can't stress that enough. It's crazy, but it's true.
- 2:27So when somebody appears to be saying, oh, sure, yeah, I trust
- 2:34you, there's probably a lot of dishonesty in that because they
- 2:40don't feel safe in the environment or they don't feel
- 2:43valued, or they feel like they will give an idea and it will be
- 2:47taken away, or they'll give an honest answer and it will be
- 2:51Retribution 101 coming their way quickly.
- 2:55So often we miss out on getting the most from our people.
- 2:59And that is so sad because I really do believe that people
- 3:04want to be, you know, contributing.
- 3:07They want to be offering the highest level of themselves.
- 3:10They want to give value. They want to show that they can,
- 3:14you know, achieve that next level, if you will.
- 3:18But it sucks because you've got to get through that emotional
- 3:23barrier first. If you don't get through that,
- 3:26you you just aren't going to get the best of your people.
- 3:29And I don't care if it's like a simple thing like someone who
- 3:32works in an ice cream shop or you know, they're the cashier at
- 3:37the ice cream shop, They're the cashier at the counter, they're
- 3:39bagging groceries. I don't care if it's the
- 3:41simplest things. If they don't trust, they won't
- 3:44say anything. Now, here's interesting.
- 3:45Is something interesting. My son, who is 16, is
- 3:49apprenticing to become a plumber and three days a week this is
- 3:53what he does. And he will come back and he
- 3:56will talk to me because he's, he's that kid that loves to talk
- 4:00about stuff. And he'll tell me how this was
- 4:04going on or that was going on at a job and he noticed something,
- 4:08blah, blah, blah. And I say, did you, did you say
- 4:11something to whoever he was with that day?
- 4:13And he'll say, no, I was with so and so and so he didn't say
- 4:17anything to that plumber because that particular plumber is not
- 4:21someone that's open to hearing it.
- 4:23According to him. He's like, Oh no, no, he
- 4:24doesn't. He doesn't want me to do that
- 4:26kind of stuff. He just wants me to like, watch
- 4:28him and not not really interact or give him any ideas.
- 4:33Now, there is one plumber that he works with that is a younger
- 4:37guy, and they pitch and catch all the time.
- 4:40They come up with ideas and he loves to hear what Lucas has to
- 4:44say. So he's kind of taking in that
- 4:47energy and he'll come back and he'll be like, oh, it was really
- 4:50great. We had this.
- 4:51And then I saw this and I was able to give him an idea.
- 4:54And then he said, yeah, that could work, however, it might be
- 4:57because of this. And then I learned something I
- 4:58didn't know. He wasn't upset at all because
- 5:01he was able to pitch and catch. And the other guy is totally
- 5:05open to it because he knows that he's Lucas is actually thinking.
- 5:10And this is such a microcosm of what we run into out in the
- 5:13world. So Thought for the Day is are
- 5:17you getting the best from your people because they can trust
- 5:22you? And if they don't, how do you
- 5:24rectify that? What do you do right away?
- 5:27Well, you start making an open environment for that and you
- 5:30start appreciating what you hear.
- 5:32Even if you're not going to use it, you start appreciating it.
- 5:36My rule has always been you can give ideas, doesn't mean that
- 5:40I'm going to use them, but give the ideas.
- 5:43I appreciate all ideas. I appreciate all creativity.
- 5:46Doesn't mean it's not going to it's going to get used, but what
- 5:49it could mean is it's going to lead to something else and that
- 5:51starts to foster it and that's the beginning of it.
- 5:54So go out and try to open up that little portal with your
- 5:59teams and your people and even with yourself because it makes a
- 6:02massive difference. OK my friends, I hope you have a
- 6:05blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:07Bye.
