Speaker A: Foreign.

Speaker B: Thanks for tuning in to the undercuts review of the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. Please rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and enjoy the show.
0:19
Speaker C: By being a racing driver, you are on the risk all the time. By being a racing driver means you are racing with other people. And if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you no longer racing driver.
0:32
Speaker A: All right, boys. Well, the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix has come and gone and another Mercedes has won the race, but not Kimmy this time. George finally able to come back and I. He won the first race of the year.
0:47
Speaker D: Right.
0:47
Speaker A: So his second race win of the season. Um, and it seems, I mean, to correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the championship picture is kind of blown open at this point.
1:01
Speaker D: Yeah, I mean, back on. Yeah, I mean, Kimmy, did he win four or five on the bounce? I think it's five. Is this race eight of the season? Yeah. So it's. George won the first and then Kimmy had a run of five and that, then Lewis and then now George. So the lead is 40 points. So it's still more than a race and a third place. So there's still a lot of ground to make up. But this has got to be a boost for George because I think he was starting to suffer a little bit from whether it be a little bit of performance or some misfortune or bad timing on the part of virtual safety cars and safety cars, but this time he's won one. So over the last two weekends, he's picked up what, how many? So he picked up 10 on. On last time out and no, 18 last time and then 10 on him on Kimmy this week. So he's picked up a good, a good number of points over his teammate.
2:05
Speaker E: Yeah, I mean, it's definitely got to be a huge emotional boost to George, just that, you know, know, get another win under his belt. He can't. He can do it. You know, Kimmy's not invincible and, and his luck held out. I must admit, I was kind of with the, the heat that was. They were talking about this weekend or this week. It's been crazy hot in Europe, like, I don't know, well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, 40 degree centigrade. I was waiting for some, some cars to, to break or drive us to break, you know, under the extreme pressure. But, you know, for Mercedes, they've had issues with reliability, but it didn't. Didn't come to fruition. And George ran, I mean, he ran a Pretty flawless weekend, right? He, you know, from pole position and then was he ever, I mean, apart from, I guess with the shuffling of pit stops and stuff. But he was never really not in the lead, was he, George, during the
2:59
Speaker D: race now he was out front and pretty much dictating, obviously. The poll came at a bit of a strange moment with Max Verstappen spinning on the final corner right at the end after time had expired and everyone's on their fast laps. Kimi Antonelli backed out, he aborted his lap. George observed what was at the time a single yellow flag rather than a double waved yellow, which is be prepared to stop. So he backed off, he lifted and just enough for the stewards to say, okay, it stands. It was shortly after that that they upgraded it to a double yellow. And. But by that point, you know, it was, it was kind of. It was all over anyway and George had the, the pole position. But I think that there was quite a bit of discourse, shall we say, online. You know, the George haters out there were.
4:00
Speaker E: Had a. I mean, I'm not a George hater, I'm a Ferrari fan. Right, because it was, it was Leclerc who had the. Had the pole at the time. Right, yeah, yeah. Thinking. Thinking that he'd. He'd got it done and Max had crashed and that's it, everybody's laps are done, nobody can beat it. And then suddenly George comes steaming through, but Jason, on the chat, Jason's like, no, he's going to get deleted, he'll be fine. But then we're just waiting and waiting. Delete it.
4:26
Speaker D: Then there was a sort of 2008 kind of moment where you got the guys in the Ferrari garage celebrating and then something happens and they're like, no, no, no.
4:39
Speaker E: Oh, why'd you have to bring. Why'd you have to bring that up? I don't like to think about that Massa's dad jumping around. Yeah,
4:49
Speaker D: they find out, you know, because everyone saw Max is in the wall. Everyone was assuming that it was end of. The one person who really had his wits about him to know that this is the situation you give up. I think he eased off like one and a half tenths, so that's what he says. He did observably do what he needed to do for the yellow flag, which is to kind of take yourself off the edge of performance while you go past, which is, you know, F1 is slightly different from other forms of motorsport in that yellow flags are a little bit different. I can't say that I agree with A little. Oh, you've done a little lift on the yellow. In any circumstances you should be like, really, you know, when you're going past an incident, you shouldn't be going flat out, which I guess is when you're an F1 driver, you're kind of better than others, so you deserve probably to be able to be a bit closer to that limit. But it was, yeah, there were some people online, like I said, that weren't particularly happy with the fact that that stood well.
5:57
Speaker A: And he was also like, I, I backed off like 4, 10 of a, 4/10 of a second of a lap afterwards. He was like, I could have had another 3/10, 4/10 on my lap after if I hadn't.
6:08
Speaker E: He did and he said that, he said that pretty quickly, didn't he, in the interview right afterwards. He was coming hot with the excuses or not the, or like the reasons not to disqualify him. Um, but I mean, fair play to him. If, if he really did lift that much and he had that much in his back pocket, he was going to smash, you know, leclerc's time, you know, for the pole and you know, to still get the pole even with a, a lift. Supposed lift in the, in the last corner. Impressive stuff, but maybe, maybe at the end of the day wouldn't have made much difference because, I mean, George just took control of the race anyway. It doesn't look like the Ferraris were. Although without thinking.
6:48
Speaker A: Go ahead.
6:49
Speaker E: Well, I was just going to say the Ferraris came with an engine upgrade, I think, but over the race distance it just didn't seem to.
6:55
Speaker D: Yeah, I don't know how much of that is due to, I mean, it's altitude, which doesn't bode particularly well for Mexico given it's got an even longer straight and it's even higher. So let's not put Ferraris in our coupes. F1 when it comes to Mexico. Um, but it was, Yeah, I, I think that the biggest issue that, that Ferrari had this weekend, not only to jump straight on to, to Ferrari bashing, is that they, they were just burning out their tires. They just could not, they just, they, they were struggling with the tires and, and that pushed them into a three stop, which was obviously a lot slower and even then they had to manage the pace.
7:38
Speaker A: Yeah, that was sad from Ferrari. Martin, I'm sure you were sad too, but I'm kind of like a Lewis fan. If the McLarens aren't involved, I'm going to root for Lewis and if he's up in the championship hunt, of course, I'm going to try and root for him to get that eighth right.
7:53
Speaker E: Yeah. I mean, last. Last week, you know, Mercedes reacted to Ferrari pitting when they probably shouldn't have done, you know, when they brought Lewis in and then they brought Russell in last week and Russell could have stayed out this, this week, maybe they learned their lesson that the Ferraris can do that. We can just stay out and drive away, you know, we're not going to get undercut. We've got this gate, we've got this in hand, you know, and, yeah, and everything that the Ferraris, you know, did, you know, didn't. Didn't really work.
8:23
Speaker D: And on the day, it was the closest, you know, the closest challenger was Max Verstappen, which was a little surprising to many, obviously. I think Max has always been very, very good in Austria, but we talk about George being out in front. At the end of the race, it was only, I think there was 2 1/2 seconds between George and Kimmy with Max Verstappen in the middle. So it got very, you know, with offset strategies. I mean, there wasn't opportunity for Verstappen to undercut George, but I think the Mercedes had the measure of it and we're maybe keeping an eye on things. Were people getting tires ready in the Red Bull Pit and then just come in straight away? So I think that they covered off that pretty well and then that took the undercut away from Verstappen, which meant he had to go for an offset. So he went long, cost himself probably about 10 seconds doing that, but then came out with fresher tires and tried to make a run of it at the end, but he just really kind of run out of tyre advantage just at the. Just in the last couple of laps of the race. And you had Kimmy coming, doing a similar sort of strategy to him with tyres slightly fresher and, yeah, putting Max under pressure. I think, you know, Kimmy became George's best friend towards the end there, as he was closing up on Max and getting to the point where Max was starting to look a bit more in his rearview mirror rather than focusing on attacking the car in front of.
9:54
Speaker E: Yeah, for sure. I mean, yeah, it was cl. It was close at the end, but I've got to feel like that Mercedes were somewhat managing it. Antonelli was charging for sure, but I think Russell kind of had it. He could have gone a little bit quicker, I think if he needed. He was just managing and he didn't
10:09
Speaker D: have a drinks bottle. His drinks system Malfunctioned, so he was kind of thirsty at the end.
10:13
Speaker E: Oh, did it. I did not hear that. Oh, when did that. Like the whole race? No, not.
10:18
Speaker D: I don't know exactly when it happened, but when he was coming into the pits, you heard him say, oh on the, on the radio, it's like, well done, everyone. Everything worked perfectly except the drinks bottle. I'm gonna need a drink when I get there.
10:32
Speaker A: Wow.
10:32
Speaker E: Oh, that's really bad.
10:35
Speaker D: Did you see David Coulthard doing the interviews at the end, like with the guys when they finished and George disappeared off and D.C. is like, where are you going? You gotta come back. And he came back with a big old drinks bottle.
10:48
Speaker E: Okay, good. Wow. I mean, that's. I mean, I don't know, I want. I don't want to say how dangerous that is, but. Yeah, I mean, these guys lose. I mean it was a. That was very, very hot race. They sweat like crazy. If he was really without drink for a significant portion of the race, even, even fairer play to him, I guess.
11:08
Speaker A: Yeah. And I mean, another team racing bulls has really kind of put themselves in the fight. I mean, it looked like Alpine was really that team that was the best of the rest. But racing bulls multiple race weekends in a row, getting both the cars in the points, really, really great for them.
11:27
Speaker D: Yeah. I think one thing that I didn't notice when the race was going on, but I've since learned after the fact is that Arvid Lindblad ignored team instructions after the first pit stops and overtook Lawson, who'd been told to manage his brake temperatures. And then in the second round of pit stops, they basically engineered Lawson to go back in front by undercutting.
11:55
Speaker E: Right.
11:57
Speaker D: So yeah, you didn't really. I don't think it kind of came through, but I since learned that that's actually the case, which is a bit, bit of a. Bit of a. No, no. Especially over one point or two points. So I'm sure that they had a quiet word with Arvid after that.
12:17
Speaker A: Yeah, well, I guess it worked out in the end and it worked out for my Coops team too.
12:23
Speaker E: Me too.
12:24
Speaker D: I think I had. I had Lawson, Lindblad, 9th and 10th. I don't know how you.
12:27
Speaker E: Oh, nice. Okay. Yeah, they're the new. They're the new Alpines at the moment. I mean, they're closing the gap. That's only. It's still like, what was that? 13 points between them, which take. Can take a while to get when you're only picking up a couple of points a race. But yeah, they're moving in the right direction for sure.
12:46
Speaker D: Yeah.
12:47
Speaker C: Yeah.
12:47
Speaker A: And I mean, other than this race, we've seen lots of cars at the top, at least have one or two cars go out, so that gets pushed up a couple more points as well. Which leads me to Audi, who. Huh?
13:03
Speaker D: How did you never seem to score any points. They've only got like two points and that was from. From Melbourne. I don't know. It seems like they have a great weekend on weekends when none of the leaders retire.
13:14
Speaker A: Exactly. They brought a big upgrade this weekend. Right. Like a bunch of upgrades.
13:20
Speaker D: They did have some and I think they actually had a good. A good race. They've that, you know, the. I didn't really see too much of them during the race, but it seemed like they were best of the rest. Just outside the points. Yeah, well, but just in the points and we've kind of.
13:38
Speaker E: We.
13:38
Speaker D: We've talked about one Ferrari, we haven't talked really about the other Ferrari because we talked a little bit about Lewis, although I was sad to see him drop down to really fifth, wasn't it, behind Piastri and maybe we can come to the McLarens in a second. But Charlotte Claire was just going backwards all weekend off the back of what was looking to be a great qualifying in the race. It seemed like he was just the guy being overtaken all the time, which is sad to see because we all know how fast he is.
14:09
Speaker E: Yeah, I mean, he had similar pit stop strategy to Hamilton. Right. They were doing the three stop with him. He stopped early, but he just couldn't get it hooked up, I guess.
14:19
Speaker D: Did they give him soft tyres too? I don't know. They gave Lewis soft tyres. That was.
14:24
Speaker E: They gave Leclerc soft tyres at the end. He had a used set soft that he finished on. But I mean, the beginning of the race was kind of wacky. Right. It was Russell pole with Leclerc second. But down into the first corner, Hamilton and Leclerc were fighting very hard with each other. Russell had kind of pulled ahead and Antonelli was just going wide at every.
14:52
Speaker D: He didn't keep it on the track. He did drop. I think he was qualif. He qualified in fourth and dropped back to fifth, I think. But he got to keep it on the island, man.
15:01
Speaker E: He went off. I think he went wide at like three turns on the. On the first lap alone. Ended up having to give up a spot. But yeah, you know, Antonelli kind of went backwards because of that. Hamilton took Leclerc, but Russell was. Was gone by that point.
15:19
Speaker D: Yeah. And then there was a really great battle between Verstappen and Hamilton. Verstappen came on the radio moaning about something. But I honestly, that was such good racing. It was really close and they were both elbows out. Obviously the stewards didn't even look at it. I don't think. I think it was referred, but they just ruled it straight out. It was noted by the race director, but it wasn't picked up by the stewards because they didn't feel the need to investigate on that.
15:50
Speaker E: Yeah, Verstappen said that that's a penalty. Obviously the Stewards, the stewards didn't agree. And then Hamilton post race said, you don't drive around the outside of a champion. He was behind the apex and should have backed out. I left him enough room, but, I mean, but later on, Verstappen got, Got. Got his revenge. Right. Because he did end up taking Hamilton.
16:13
Speaker A: They did the same thing to each other.
16:15
Speaker E: Exactly. And Verstappen just drifted his car out a little bit in front of Hamilton. Hamilton had to either not tap the brakes probably, but just back off the power a little bit.
16:27
Speaker D: It was a good move. He stuck his car on the inside and that was that. That's the one thing that I've found about Lewis and you saw it back in 20, 21, especially in that last race, he didn't really cover the inside very well. So you've got to make a move on the inside of Lewis and he did. And he got by. He was going to get by anyway because like I said, the terrible tyre situation, Ferrari meant that they just couldn't get. They couldn't keep the pace.
16:52
Speaker E: Yeah, I mean, yeah, when Hamilton was in second for a hot minute there at the beginning, and then he just. Yeah, tires got burnt up and he couldn't get anything going.
17:00
Speaker D: And he made his last stop on the same lap as Piastri, who was up behind trying to get by. And then obviously he continued to go backwards. He made his second stop onto the soft tyres during the virtual safety car for it was Carlos Science, wasn't it? Whose science went into lawnmower mode
17:24
Speaker E: on
17:24
Speaker D: the F1TV broadcast, which I thought was quite funny because I go, Mitchell. It saved Lewis 10 seconds. So if you look at that in the context of his overall race, he'd have been a little bit further back, still ahead of Charles. But I think it had been behind others as well. But yeah, not the best day for Ferrari. Piastri, good race to finish fourth, honest. On a track where I always saw Lando as being One of the top drivers at this circuit, you know, say we got Verstappen and even going back, obviously, the last couple of years with Lando and Max, you know, racing for the title. Even back before that, you'd got last lap Lando, and he was always really gone well here, so I don't quite know why he was so far behind Piastri. Any. Any word, Jason?
18:18
Speaker A: I don't think that McLaren did very well this weekend. I think that Ferrari did bad, which gave McLaren better positions. I don't. I don't think that McLaren. They didn't even show them on the. They barely showed them until they were like. It was like Lewis coming up to the back of Piastri at the end. Or else you didn't see them the whole race.
18:38
Speaker D: Yeah, it'. It's funny because I didn't actually watch the end of the race, the last sort of 10 laps or so.
18:45
Speaker A: Didn't miss anything.
18:46
Speaker D: I went to go play golf. It missed a club championship this weekend. I played very well on Saturday, not so well on Sunday, thanks for asking. But I was listening to it on the radio on the way to the club and I couldn't. They were talking about the top three, and they were talking about Lewis in fifth, and then they were talking about all things that were happening behind. They didn't even mention Piastri at all on the radio. And I had to look up on my phone on Live Target because I, for the life of me, I was trying to figure out who was in fourth that they weren't talking about.
19:20
Speaker E: Yeah, he had a. Yeah. Very uninteresting race for the McLarens. They barely mentioned either of them. Lando were just, just present, I guess, almost like.
19:31
Speaker D: Yes, Miss.
19:32
Speaker E: Yeah, yeah. Don't forget about me. Yeah, yeah.
19:37
Speaker A: He's like. And that's really the number one on my car.
19:39
Speaker D: Yeah, yeah, he's fine.
19:41
Speaker E: He's.
19:41
Speaker D: I don't feel sorry for him at all. But, yeah, I think that's really the last couple of races where, I don't know, McLaren's just seen a little bit lost at sea, you know, not keeping up with. With development, not being able to move forward, which is something that we've obviously seen from McLaren a lot over the last couple of years, is their rate of development and everything that they put on the car on the car working like we talked about. The front wing that they brought to Miami and Canada and didn't run and then didn't try it at Monaco, but did put it on the car for Spain. Didn't really Seem to move them up the field that much. They brought a new rear wing as well that they were trying out here. I don't know if that was on the car for the race. I don't think it was. I think they just use it in FP1. But yeah, it's strange to see McLaren not making a lot of headway at this point in the season.
20:40
Speaker A: Yeah, it's certainly disappointing, but one thing we did get during this race was awesome drone shots during that. I don't remember what exactly those corners were. Where Max and Lewis were having the. The battle was right where they were showing those shots.
20:57
Speaker D: I don't know, man. Some of those were making me a little bit seasick.
21:03
Speaker E: I liked it. I almost felt like I was racing a little bit. It's like, come on, go faster. Overtake the F1.
21:08
Speaker A: You're right there.
21:10
Speaker D: I was just looking at the TV with my head tilted to the side trying to. What's going on? Really flying along next to the cars were very good, but maybe they've got to get a. What do you call the things that keep things on the level, the track, a gyroscope on it or something to kind of keep it, you know, a bit more steady.
21:33
Speaker E: You've just got Nick. Basically what you've done is you've turned your living room into one of those Thorpe park rides that they used to have in the 1980s with a huge screen where it would make you look like you were going on a roller coaster or something. It'd make you tip over
21:50
Speaker D: a fire engine rushing through town.
21:51
Speaker E: Right, exactly. Rushing through town, yeah. You know Nick has a hundred inch television, don't you Nick?
21:59
Speaker C: Or something.
21:59
Speaker E: It's huge and you're sitting, you know, five feet away from it. No wonder you're feeling sick. I think that's more of the reason
22:08
Speaker A: maybe it's life size in your living room.
22:12
Speaker D: It's great for watching sport. It really is. It's like My son, my 8 year old boy stands next to it and it's like it's taller than him.
22:22
Speaker E: You have to choose where to look on the TV when you're at his house to like watch. You can't watch the whole screen at once. You have to choose which side of the screen am I going to look at.
22:31
Speaker D: It was really good for the penalty shootout just then, by the way.
22:34
Speaker A: I bet, I bet. Yeah. Well, I guess there's a couple losers we didn't really talk about. We can just kind of briefly talk about them. I mean, Alpine underperformed. Haas didn't do very well. Williams obviously we talked about Carlos and Albon was nowhere. Nowhere. And what Cadillac had both their cars retire in the first two laps.
22:54
Speaker D: Yeah, yeah. Cadillac brake problems, I think Botas on like lap two, Perez on lap. Not too many after that.
23:04
Speaker E: But no, yeah, like yeah, lap five or zone four.
23:06
Speaker D: No development parts. And I don't quite know how they've tracked but it seemed like it would have been all right. But they obviously didn't get a chance to race them. Alpine, no idea what happened to them, to be honest with you. And Haas have the Ferrari engine which I think is, you know, maybe the small turbo doesn't suck enough air in at those kind of altitudes to be able to really pump it out. Because I think at the end of the straight they were, they were down on pace and just getting picked off.
23:35
Speaker E: Yeah, I mean, yeah, I think they had. Ocon ended up being. Yeah. Two laps down. Ocon and Albon by the end were two laps down on the finishes. And Alonso three laps down. I guess Alonso did finish, but he was, he was. Lap. Was he really three laps down? Jeez.
23:52
Speaker A: He was, yes.
23:53
Speaker E: Oh my God. And Stroll obviously. Yeah. Retired.
23:56
Speaker D: Was he there? What happened to Stroll? I don't remember.
23:59
Speaker E: He retired around lap 45.
24:01
Speaker A: I think he should become a. No Aston Martin podcast.
24:07
Speaker D: Yeah. Because actually about 45 was when I left the house. So that was maybe as I was getting in my car to leave and it was like, I don't, I didn't probably realize that Stroll started so I certainly didn't notice when he didn't finish.
24:19
Speaker A: Yeah, I mean they're not finishers.
24:23
Speaker E: They truly are a non entity as a team at least. You know, Cadillac are, you know, trying to do something new. You know,
24:32
Speaker D: Aston have always said Spa is when they're going to be bringing a big upgrade. So that's only two races. That's only two races from now. So we got, we got the British Grand Prix next weekend, well, this coming weekend and then two weeks until Spa. So we'll see how they go.
24:49
Speaker A: Why wouldn't they bring them to Silverstone?
24:51
Speaker D: Not really.
24:51
Speaker A: Is that their home race?
24:53
Speaker D: Well, it's just across the street. Like literally just across the street.
24:57
Speaker A: It doesn't make any sense. All right, well anyway, I guess that brings us to Coops.
25:06
Speaker E: Coops. F1. Yeah. So top scores this week. Oh my goodness. How do you even say. Some of these names
25:13
Speaker A: are fun for us to listen. Try and say them.
25:17
Speaker E: Agrasheim, 265 points. Levi 09, 263 and Pablotus 260, which are decent, you know, we got. It was the same, you know, top top 10 as we, as we normally get or the top six, you know, the big six, you know, all finished or big eight. So that helps boost the scores. Overall standings. No change in the top three. Viva Taro first, Toto under Vash second and fight to win. Hangs out in third. But big move up the table from our podcast leader, jay Lazzie. Up 12 spots to 14th.
25:56
Speaker A: Let's go.
25:57
Speaker E: Making a move back. And so you're on 1,308 points. So yeah, only like 80 points behind third, which, you know, just like in the regular season. Plenty to go. Yeah, well, I moved up four spots to 40th.
26:15
Speaker D: I moved up 64 spots.
26:17
Speaker E: Nisk Nick.
26:18
Speaker C: Nice.
26:19
Speaker E: A massive leap. 64 spots up to 79th. It's because you're dragging all those cups next to your name behind you. They weigh you down. Those silver, silver and gold cups that you've got next to your name make you a little slower. But the salary cap. So we're all, we're all, we're all moving in the right direction.
26:39
Speaker A: The cost cap. Nick has to, you know, spend a little bit less on development this season.
26:45
Speaker E: Yeah. And it's, yeah, it's a quick, quick turnaround and the guys just, well, they all drive their, their car parts home and ready for the British Grand Prix, which is like you said, down the road from a lot of the places where these cars are built. For many of the teams, Sky's already
27:02
Speaker A: hyping an all British podium before the race has started. They're like it's going to be the same podium as it was in the last race weekend. Oh, right, yeah, yeah, Silverstone.
27:13
Speaker E: That would be awesome.
27:14
Speaker D: I mean, I think that Mercedes are going to be the class of the field on, on this one. In, in Silverstone, it's just there's not a whole lot of point and squirt. You know, slow corners are not a thing in Silverstone. It's a lot of high speed, a lot of medium speed. So anything. I really don't see Ferrari doing much in Silverstone, unfortunately. I think it's going to be Mercedes, especially George because he's a fast corners kind of guy. So my money's going to be. My money's on George.
27:48
Speaker E: Lando says, Lando says just being at your home race gives you like an extra between half a second, tenth of a second to half a second a lap faster just because you're with your fans roaring you on. So, so George, my money's on George, too. Yeah, my money's on George, too.

Speaker E: Oh, on the same. Oh, in the afternoon.
29:08
Speaker A: Talk about the altitude.
29:10
Speaker E: It's altitude, but the weather's nice there. It's not so hot. Like, actually, even though it's in Mexico, it's quite. Because it's higher, it's cooler. So that might work for us. We'll see.
