- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.

- 0:27Today we're kicking off a new series, A
- 0:30Mysterious Business, bringing ministry and marketplace wisdom together.
- 0:36And we'll get more into what I mean
- 0:38by a mysterious business, but first a question
- 0:40for you.
- 0:41Do you have any special memories from being
- 0:45in a shopping mall?
- 0:47Maybe when you were a kid or if
- 0:49you had a kid with you.
- 0:50For me, I grew up in the 90s
- 0:52and shopping malls were still a big deal
- 0:54then.
- 0:55I had a kind of adopted grandmother.
- 0:57She wasn't biologically related to us, but she
- 1:00was an older lady at church named Louise.
- 1:03So we called her Grandma Louise.
- 1:04And because all my grandparents were hundreds of
- 1:07miles away, she kind of filled that role
- 1:09for me and my brother Benjamin growing up.
- 1:11And whenever we had a birthday, rather than
- 1:14buying us a present, she would say, let
- 1:16me take you to the mall and we
- 1:18would pick out our own toy, whatever we
- 1:20wanted, our present, and then she would buy
- 1:22it for us.
- 1:23And that was a master stroke on her
- 1:25part because not only did it solve the
- 1:29problem of would we like the gift or
- 1:30not, but it also created one-on-one
- 1:32time with her.
- 1:33It was like this special outing with Grandma
- 1:35Louise, which, you know, as I remember back,
- 1:37I don't remember what toys I got at
- 1:39the shopping mall, but I remember being with
- 1:41her in her presence.
- 1:43It was this gift of love and her
- 1:46grandmotherly presence.
- 1:48So for me, that's a special memory from
- 1:51a shopping mall.
- 1:51Do you have anything like that?
- 1:53Being in a brick-and-mortar store, not
- 1:55online, buying something for someone or receiving a
- 2:00gift from someone?
- 2:02Now, if you're much younger than me, the
- 2:04answer might be no, right?
- 2:06Because malls were still a thing in the
- 2:08nineties, but then the internet has eroded the
- 2:11presence and the vibrancy of shopping malls.
- 2:13And now you might've had this experience.
- 2:15Have you ever gone to a shopping mall
- 2:17that's basically empty?
- 2:19It's kind of creepy, right?
- 2:21Like there's maybe a couple stores, but then
- 2:23a lot of the shops are just closed.
- 2:25Sometimes there's a movie theater that's still in
- 2:27business, but the rest of them all really
- 2:29isn't.
- 2:29And you walk around and it's just like
- 2:31this husk of what it was meant to
- 2:33be.
- 2:34It's this big structure.
- 2:35The structure is still there, but it's empty.
- 2:37There's no life inside.
- 2:40Even just walking around, we get this visceral
- 2:43sense of like, this is not the way
- 2:44it's supposed to be.
- 2:45A structure like this should be full of
- 2:47life.
- 2:48It should be full of the things that
- 2:49really matter.
- 2:51Well, I think there's a clue there in
- 2:54our experience, even just walking around businesses that
- 2:57are now derelict or not as thriving in
- 3:00the structures they once had.
- 3:02A clue about life in the kingdom of
- 3:05God.
- 3:06And I know this might seem strange, but
- 3:07the kingdom of God includes structures.
- 3:12Okay, now my dad is an electrical engineer.
- 3:15He's a guy that thinks a lot about
- 3:16structures.
- 3:17He thinks about how things connect to each
- 3:20other.
- 3:20And maybe you have someone like this in
- 3:22your life, or like you're walking with them
- 3:23around a building, and they're like, oh, that's
- 3:25how that part of the building works.
- 3:27That's so interesting.
- 3:29So my dad is like this, and our
- 3:30church building was originally built as a plastics
- 3:33factory.
- 3:34It was a structure for plastics manufacturing.
- 3:38But then when we were converting it into
- 3:40a sanctuary, we realized, okay, we can build
- 3:43the sanctuary in this part, but there were
- 3:44these pillars, these steel columns coming down every
- 3:47so often, and it would disrupt the sight
- 3:49lines in the sanctuary, two of them.
- 3:51So they built this truss where they cut
- 3:53off the pillars only so many feet down
- 3:56from the ceiling.
- 3:56And then they built these steel cylinders kind
- 4:00of going from the corners attached to the
- 4:02other pillars to then support those middle pillars
- 4:05with the truss.
- 4:06And so it's still got like the structural
- 4:08integrity, but now the space where the people
- 4:10are in the sanctuary is open.
- 4:12My dad loved that.
- 4:13When he goes around that church, he still
- 4:15notices, he's like, see what they did.
- 4:17My dad loves structures.
- 4:20Structures really matter.
- 4:22Structures really matter.
- 4:23And yet a structure like an empty shopping
- 4:27mall that no longer has life is eerie.
- 4:30It's not right.
- 4:31It's not the way things are supposed to
- 4:32be.
- 4:33Okay, so we're starting this series and we're
- 4:36calling it a mysterious business to talk about
- 4:40the structures of the kingdom of God, including
- 4:44the structure of business.
- 4:47I think that business is a structure in
- 4:49the kingdom of God.
- 4:50And I'm drawing here on the work of,
- 4:52you guessed it, Dallas Willard.
- 4:54So I'm just going to read a couple
- 4:56quick quotes from his excellent book, Called to
- 4:59Business.
- 4:59It's a collection of some of his earlier
- 5:01essays published posthumously.
- 5:04Let me just read a couple of things
- 5:05he says here.
- 5:06Business is God's arrangement.
- 5:08Human beings didn't think it up.
- 5:10They put some variations on it, but it
- 5:12is a part of God's design by which
- 5:15human beings love and serve one another.
- 5:17It is an extension of the basic human
- 5:20relationships that we have in family, which reach
- 5:22out to neighbors and communities.
- 5:24And it is a fundamental structure of love
- 5:27in the kingdom of God.
- 5:29I'll say that again.
- 5:31Business is a fundamental structure of love in
- 5:33the kingdom of God.
- 5:35And then Dallas goes on to say a
- 5:38little bit about the purpose of business.
- 5:40God gives us a point of reference for
- 5:42determining what is good for people, independently of
- 5:45what they want.
- 5:46That's why it's so important in the family
- 5:48to have this point of reference, but it's
- 5:50equally important in the schools and it's equally
- 5:52important in business.
- 5:54If you look at it historically, if you
- 5:55look at the literature regarding business, you will
- 5:58see that the aim of business is to
- 6:00make provision for the needs of the people
- 6:02in an area.
- 6:04If a business actually does make that provision,
- 6:06it is successful.
- 6:08Well immediately the response comes back, but does
- 6:10it make a lot of money?
- 6:11Here I'm going to say something that will
- 6:13strike many people as heretical.
- 6:15The aim of businesses is not to make
- 6:17money, just like the aim of churches is
- 6:19not to attract people.
- 6:20Is it important to make money?
- 6:22Yes, it is.
- 6:22Is it important to attract people to church?
- 6:24Yes, it is.
- 6:25But that's not the mark of success.
- 6:28And that's where we have to have a
- 6:29different place to stand.
- 6:32I say to you very simply that the
- 6:33only place we can stand is in the
- 6:34teachings of Jesus Christ.
- 6:37Okay, whoa, there's so much going on there.
- 6:40And we're going to have a whole series
- 6:41to kind of unpack these ideas.
- 6:43But I want to just pull out a
- 6:45few ideas from Dallas there.
- 6:46And then I want to turn to a
- 6:47scripture passage that can help us unpack this
- 6:50further.
- 6:51So he calls business a fundamental structure of
- 6:54love in the kingdom of God.
- 6:56So note what he's doing there.
- 6:58He's saying business is a structure.
- 6:59It's like a container.
- 7:01It's a place where things happen.
- 7:02But then what's the point?
- 7:03The point is love.
- 7:06And then when he unpacks that in terms
- 7:08of the purpose of business, he says, the
- 7:10aim of business is to make provision for
- 7:11the needs of the people in an area.
- 7:15So business, it creates this structure, right?
- 7:17It's profitable.
- 7:19It creates jobs.
- 7:20It provides goods or services.
- 7:22People can make purchases there, right?
- 7:24There's this structure.
- 7:25But then the purpose, if the purpose is
- 7:28love, the idea is that the goods and
- 7:32services being provided are meeting real human needs
- 7:34in a given area.
- 7:35So that's good, right?
- 7:37It was good that I could walk into
- 7:39that shopping mall with Grandma Louise and she
- 7:41could buy a present for me, a birthday
- 7:44gift, a toy, something that was part of
- 7:46the love and our relationship.
- 7:47That's a good thing.
- 7:49It's good that you can go out to
- 7:50a restaurant and celebrate with family and friends.
- 7:52It's good that you can go to a
- 7:53hardware store and get the screws and the
- 7:55wood that you need.
- 7:55These things are good.
- 7:57They meet real human needs.
- 7:59But the retort that comes back, Dallas says,
- 8:02is, but does it make a lot of
- 8:04money?
- 8:04We have this assumption in our culture that
- 8:08the point of business is to make money.
- 8:10And Dallas is challenging that.
- 8:11Dallas is saying, as disciples of Jesus, if
- 8:14we're in business, we gotta think about the
- 8:16point of our business being love.
- 8:18The point of the business is to meet
- 8:20the needs of people, not to make money.
- 8:21Although making money is important for the business
- 8:23to be able to meet the needs of
- 8:25people.
- 8:25Money is a means to an end, not
- 8:27an end in itself.
- 8:28So you see how, how Dallas is saying
- 8:30that the structure of business can hold the
- 8:33love of God.
- 8:34If we stand in the place of the
- 8:36teachings of Jesus Christ, business becomes a place
- 8:39that can hold the presence of God.
- 8:42Wow, that's, that's really remarkable.
- 8:44Okay, so now I wanna pivot to the
- 8:46Bible and look at this word mystery that's
- 8:49in the Bible.
- 8:50Again, we're talking about a mysterious business.
- 8:52What do I mean by a mysterious business?
- 8:54Well, I don't want you to think about
- 8:55like Agatha Christie novels or Rian Johnson movies,
- 8:59right?
- 8:59Don't think about murder mysteries.
- 9:01That's not the kind of mystery we're talking
- 9:02about.
- 9:03We're talking about something that's hidden and then
- 9:07is revealed.
- 9:07So this is from Colossians chapter one.
- 9:10Paul's talking about his calling and what God
- 9:13has him to do.
- 9:14And he says that his calling is, quote,
- 9:16to make the word of God fully known,
- 9:19the mystery hidden for ages and generations, but
- 9:23now revealed to his saints.
- 9:26The mystery hidden for ages and generations, but
- 9:29now revealed to his saints.
- 9:31So mystery is a Bible word.
- 9:33Mystery is a word that shows up.
- 9:35It's in the Old Testament.
- 9:36It's in the New Testament.
- 9:37And Paul's using it here to saying, there's
- 9:39a mystery that was something that was hidden
- 9:42that now God has revealed to his people.
- 9:46That's what mystery means.
- 9:47It means something hidden that's revealed.
- 9:49So the question is, what is hidden that
- 9:50was revealed?
- 9:52Well, Paul goes on to link this to
- 9:54the ministry of Jesus.
- 9:55So think about all of the Hebrew scriptures,
- 9:58how they have these images of like the
- 10:00servant of the Lord in Isaiah, or these,
- 10:02these messianic prophecies that indicate like someone's going
- 10:06to be born in Bethlehem, these images of
- 10:09a new Jerusalem, like in Ezekiel, the new
- 10:13temple, and the sense of somehow God's going
- 10:15to dwell with his people in this new
- 10:16way.
- 10:16There's all these hints and these metaphors and
- 10:19these prophecies, but it's not, it's not totally
- 10:21clear.
- 10:22There's still something hidden there.
- 10:24It's like, how is this all going to
- 10:25work?
- 10:25Then Jesus comes and he brings the kingdom
- 10:29of God, wherever he goes and his teaching
- 10:31and his healing and delivering from evil spirits,
- 10:35and then he, he dies on the cross.
- 10:37He rises from the dead three days later,
- 10:39he appears to his disciples.
- 10:40He ascends into heaven and they're reflecting all
- 10:42that.
- 10:42And they're like, he was the Messiah.
- 10:44That's what this all was about.
- 10:45That suffering servant in Isaiah, that was Jesus.
- 10:48It was something that was hidden, but now
- 10:50it's revealed.
- 10:50That was about Jesus.
- 10:51That, that new Jerusalem, that temple, a heaven
- 10:54on earth.
- 10:55Jesus is that new temple.
- 10:57He brings the presence of God wherever he
- 10:59goes.
- 10:59And someday he's going to return and bring
- 11:01heaven and earth together.
- 11:02This was hidden.
- 11:03We got a, we got a taste of
- 11:05it in the Hebrew scriptures, but now it's
- 11:07revealed in Jesus Christ and Jesus, the Messiah
- 11:10of Israel.
- 11:12Okay.
- 11:12So in a way you can think of
- 11:15a mysterious business as a Jesus business.
- 11:19A mysterious business is a business that has
- 11:21something inside of it.
- 11:23That's hidden that can then be revealed.
- 11:26And that something is the presence of Jesus.
- 11:28And think about this when you go to
- 11:30different businesses, right?
- 11:31I don't mean that the business is going
- 11:34to necessarily have like a little evangelical fish
- 11:37logo, right?
- 11:38On its advertising, or it's going to have
- 11:40Bible verses pasted on the walls.
- 11:42Although some businesses do, and that's okay, right?
- 11:44The people who are in the business are
- 11:47doing the business filled with the love of
- 11:49God.
- 11:49They're running the business in order to serve
- 11:52real needs in the community.
- 11:54Those people are the people of God.
- 11:57Those people, if they're following Jesus are bringing
- 12:01the mystery of Jesus into the business.
- 12:04It's hidden.
- 12:05It might not be immediately obvious, but when
- 12:07you're in there, it's, it's being revealed, this
- 12:09is something we talked about in our other
- 12:10series, how in your everyday work, you are
- 12:12revealing something about the presence of God to
- 12:14the people around you just by doing it
- 12:16well, by doing it out of love for
- 12:18God, for your neighbors.
- 12:20So this becomes true of the business as
- 12:22a whole as well.
- 12:23If the people who are running the business
- 12:24are doing it out of love, the business
- 12:26becomes a mysterious business, right?
- 12:29It's a container for this hidden presence of
- 12:32God that can then be revealed.
- 12:36Okay.
- 12:37So that's what I mean by a mysterious
- 12:38business.
- 12:40And what we're going to be looking at
- 12:42in this series is how do we keep
- 12:44the mystery in the business?
- 12:46How do we keep the mystery in the
- 12:48business?
- 12:48And I mean that two ways.
- 12:49One is literally with businesses.
- 12:51So we're going to have interviews with some
- 12:53people who work in business, talking about what
- 12:56it means to them to have Jesus there,
- 12:59motivating them, guiding them, enlivening them as they
- 13:02do the work of business to serve needs
- 13:04in their communities.
- 13:06So the business itself, if you're leading a
- 13:09business as a disciple of Jesus, the question
- 13:10is how do we keep the business mysterious?
- 13:12How can it not just be a business
- 13:13that that's like that empty husk, right?
- 13:16The shopping mall that's empty of life, not
- 13:18fulfilling its purpose.
- 13:19If you've got the business and you're only
- 13:22focused on making money, it's not going to
- 13:23be what it's meant to be.
- 13:25But if it's a mysterious business, if it's
- 13:27a business filled with the presence of God
- 13:29and hidden ways, then it can be what
- 13:31it's really meant to be.
- 13:33Then it can become a mysterious business, a
- 13:36business full of the life of God.
- 13:38And then the second thing is to talk
- 13:40about church that way.
- 13:41There is a sense in which church also
- 13:43has structures, right?
- 13:45If business is a structure of the kingdom
- 13:46of God, certainly the nuts and bolts of
- 13:48church are also a structure in the kingdom
- 13:50of God.
- 13:51And you notice this when, when Jesus came,
- 13:53he came and he created new structures.
- 13:56He, he changed how people thought about the
- 13:58Torah and he commissioned his apostles to kind
- 14:01of start this new movement.
- 14:02And we'll unpack that more in, in future
- 14:03episodes, the study of new structures in the
- 14:06kingdom of God.
- 14:07But the church also has structure.
- 14:10The church also has a container for the
- 14:13life of God.
- 14:14And in that sense, the church is a
- 14:15business, not in the sense that the church
- 14:16is a for-profit business, but it's like
- 14:18a, it's an organization.
- 14:19It's an institution.
- 14:20It has nuts and bolts.
- 14:21It has features.
- 14:22All right.
- 14:23And yet the church too can be empty
- 14:26of that life.
- 14:27This is even more discouraging to me than
- 14:28being in an empty shopping mall, going into
- 14:30a church and realizing this church is just
- 14:32dead, right?
- 14:33The people here, they're not connected to the
- 14:35life of God.
- 14:35There's still a building maybe, or there's still
- 14:38a kind of an institution here, but people
- 14:40don't know the power of the living God
- 14:42here.
- 14:42It's, it's so discouraging.
- 14:43If you've ever attended a worship service in
- 14:45a place like that, where it's like people
- 14:47are trying to hang on to a tradition,
- 14:48but it's like they don't really know it.
- 14:50And yet that's not what the church is
- 14:51meant to be.
- 14:52The church is meant to be the structure
- 14:53that contains the life of God.
- 14:55And so the church too is a mysterious
- 14:58business.
- 15:00And so that's why I've made the subtitle
- 15:02of this series, uh, bringing ministry and marketplace
- 15:05wisdom together.
- 15:07Because some of us, right.
- 15:09As disciples of Jesus, we spend more of
- 15:11our lives in businessy businesses.
- 15:13We're working in quote unquote, secular workplaces or
- 15:15in organizations outside the structure and the institution
- 15:18of the local church.
- 15:20Others of us as disciples of Jesus are
- 15:23working full time in a Christian ministry or
- 15:25in the local church.
- 15:26Or even if that's not our job, a
- 15:28lot of us spend a lot of time
- 15:29in the local church, just as part of
- 15:31our community.
- 15:31Right.
- 15:32And, and there are insights there that can
- 15:35inform each other, right?
- 15:36In as much as business people know the
- 15:38structure side of things, they can help church
- 15:42people with that part of church, the business
- 15:44side of church, so to speak.
- 15:46They're valid insights, real wisdom from the marketplace
- 15:50that do apply to church.
- 15:52But then similarly, right.
- 15:54In as much as church people are in
- 15:56touch with that wisdom of God, that presence
- 15:59of God in Jesus Christ, they can help
- 16:01the business people keep the mystery in their
- 16:04business, make the business itself mysterious.
- 16:07So we want business to be a mysterious
- 16:08business and we want church to be a
- 16:10mysterious business and we can learn from each
- 16:12other and I say business people and church
- 16:13people, but often they're the same people, right?
- 16:15We're, we're learning from each other in these
- 16:17different areas of our life and in our
- 16:19different giftings and callings.
- 16:21It's not like these are two discreet, mutually
- 16:24exclusive categories.
- 16:25There's a lot of overlap here.
- 16:27And, and I want to say this just
- 16:30to clarify too.
- 16:32Sometimes the church messes up by trying to
- 16:36be a business and losing the mystery.
- 16:38We've seen this and we'll talk about this
- 16:40too, where, where a church starts paying attention,
- 16:42like Dallas said to how do we get
- 16:43people in the door?
- 16:44And that becomes the definition of success rather
- 16:47than we're a dwelling place of God on
- 16:50the earth.
- 16:51We're a place where heaven touches earth and
- 16:54where people come to know the living God.
- 16:57If you make the, the nuts and bolts
- 16:59metrics, the heart of your, your church life,
- 17:03then you lose the mystery.
- 17:05And some churches have fallen into that trap,
- 17:07but on the other side, right?
- 17:09There are some churches that really committed to
- 17:11like, we want to be a dwelling place
- 17:13of God on the earth, but they don't
- 17:14necessarily have healthy structures, right?
- 17:16They don't necessarily have those nuts and bolts
- 17:17things and accountability measures in place that can
- 17:19really help.
- 17:20Um, one way I think I've used this,
- 17:22this image before is I think about a
- 17:24human body, right?
- 17:25What if your human body had no skeleton?
- 17:28You'd just be a pile of, of, you
- 17:30know, organs and blood and skin at the,
- 17:32you know, it'd be, it would be a
- 17:34mess.
- 17:34It wouldn't work.
- 17:34Right.
- 17:35But what if you're a skeleton with no
- 17:37life?
- 17:38Then you're just a skeleton, right?
- 17:39What we need is the skeleton, the healthy
- 17:41structure and the life, right?
- 17:44That, that mystery of the presence of God,
- 17:46the real life of the kingdom in our
- 17:49institutions.
- 17:50Whether those institutions are businesses or churches.
- 17:53So I'm really excited to dig into this,
- 17:55uh, with you all over the next, uh,
- 17:57several episodes.
- 17:58Uh, again, we'll, we'll have some interviews.
- 17:59I'll be unpacking some more of these ideas
- 18:01from the scriptures.
- 18:02Uh, but just to give you something practical
- 18:04to leave with today.
- 18:05I want you to think about what your
- 18:07business is today.
- 18:08What's your work today?
- 18:10Are you working in a business?
- 18:11Are you working at a church?
- 18:13Are you working in your home?
- 18:14What's your business?
- 18:16And how can you welcome the mystery of
- 18:18God today into that business?
- 18:21Maybe it's just as you start your work,
- 18:23opening up your hands and saying, Jesus, I
- 18:25welcome your presence here today.
- 18:27Let me reveal some of who you are
- 18:30to the people around me today.
- 18:33God wants to make your business, whatever it
- 18:36is, a mysterious business full of his life
- 18:39in Jesus Christ.
- 18:43Lord Jesus, thank you that the mystery has
- 18:46been revealed, but we know we can find
- 18:47the true fullness of God in you and
- 18:52that that connects to every aspect of our
- 18:54lives and our real daily work, whatever it
- 18:57is, we ask that you would help us
- 18:59to open ourselves to that mystery and to
- 19:02attend to the structures that are there for
- 19:05us in your kingdom with wisdom and with
- 19:08insight and with diligence, show us how to
- 19:10bring those things together.
- 19:12Do your work on us as we do
- 19:13our work.
- 19:19Thanks for listening.
