- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:14It's a Thursday. It is the 13th of June.
- 0:19Hello. I hope you're going well because
- 0:22here we are getting closer to the end of another week.
- 0:26It's Thursday and today we are going to evoke the spirit of
- 0:31Alanis Morissette. Yes, today we are going to talk
- 0:34all about irony. Isn't it ironic?
- 0:37Remember that song from the 90s? It was huge.
- 0:40Or maybe you weren't around in the 90s, in which case you can
- 0:43look it up. It's quite an ironic song, pun
- 0:46intended. And here we are listening to the
- 0:49author of Ecclesiastes, who is going to give us his very own
- 0:53version of that song, sharing a number of ironic paradoxes from
- 0:58life. So this is a wonderful chapter.
- 1:01So read it together. Yes, we shall.
- 1:03You ready? Great.
- 1:05Me too. Let us read together
- 1:07Ecclesiastes chapter 10. As dead flies cause even a
- 1:22bottle of perfume to stink, so a little foolishness spoils great
- 1:27wisdom and honour. A wise person chooses the right
- 1:31Rd, a fool takes the wrong one. You can identify fools just by
- 1:37the way they walk down the street.
- 1:40If your boss is angry at you, don't quit.
- 1:43A quiet spirit can overcome even great mistakes.
- 1:47There is another evil I've seen under the sun.
- 1:50Kings and rulers make a grave mistake when they give greater
- 1:54authority to foolish people and low positions to people of
- 1:59proven worth. I have seen servants riding
- 2:02horseback like princesses, and princes walking like servants.
- 2:09When you dig a well, you might fall in.
- 2:13When you demolish an old wall, you could be bitten by a snake.
- 2:18When you work in a quarry, stones might fall and crush you.
- 2:23When you chop wood, there is danger with each stroke of your
- 2:27axe. Using a dull axe requires great
- 2:31strength. So sharpen the blade.
- 2:34That's the value of wisdom. It helps you succeed if a snake
- 2:39bites before you charm it. What's the use of being a snake
- 2:43charmer? Wise words bring approval, but
- 2:48fools are destroyed by their own words.
- 2:51Fools base their thoughts on foolish assumptions, so their
- 2:55conclusions will be wicked madness.
- 2:58They chatter on and on. No one really knows what is
- 3:03going to happen. No one can predict the future.
- 3:06Fools are so exhausted by little work that they can't even find
- 3:11their way home. Watch sorrow for the land ruled
- 3:15by a servant, the land whose leaders feast in the morning.
- 3:20Happy is the land whose king is a noble leader and whose leaders
- 3:25feast at the proper time to gain strength for their work, not to
- 3:29get drunk. Laziness leads to a sagging
- 3:33roof. Idleness leads to a leaky house,
- 3:38a party gives laughter, wine gives happiness, and money gives
- 3:43everything. Never make light of the king
- 3:47even in your thoughts, and don't make fun of the powerful even in
- 3:52your own bedroom, for a little bird might deliver your message
- 3:57and tell them what you said. Lord, the author of Ecclesiastes
- 4:13makes us so clear that we are to be the same wherever we are,
- 4:19whoever we're speaking with, or even when we buy ourselves.
- 4:23Lord, what wonderful advice and what a wonderful model we have
- 4:28in you. You who are so consistent, Your
- 4:32yes means yes and your no means no, and your ways stretch
- 4:38forward and backward through time till eternity, and you
- 4:42never change. Thank you that we can depend
- 4:46wholeheartedly and entirely on you and everything you say,
- 4:51because your words are truth. Help us similarly to be people
- 4:57of consistency and trustworthiness so that those
- 5:01who know us will ask why it is that our words are so consistent
- 5:09and that we don't say one thing and then do another.
- 5:12And then we can point them back to you and say, well, I serve a
- 5:16God who is way better than this than I am, so that we can give
- 5:20you the glory, because all glory belongs to you, Lord.
- 5:26So shape us and make us more like you, day by day by day,
- 5:30starting today, starting right now.
- 5:33Holy Spirit, come transform our hearts from our fickle humanity
- 5:39to Your divine consistency so that we can shine glory back to
- 5:45Your majesty and Your throne. And we pray all of this and the
- 5:49saving name of Jesus, Amen.
