- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: Jacksonville, Jack Worst fans, welcome into Duval Daily, presented by Gen Jack.com.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm Jordan Aluga, thanks so much for being here Wednesday, October 8, late night edition of the show, just after 10, 15 p.m.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Eastern time here.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: I am exhausted, but we have breaking news.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: The marathon continues.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: The Jack Wars are making another trade.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: They're trading.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: Cornerback Tyson Campbell, too.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: The Cleveland Browns.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is a blockbuster of a trade.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to break it down as I mentioned I am exhausted.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: Had a pop-up event earlier today, had press conferences, had...
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: Lots of work to do, it's been a marathon, you know, since Monday, obviously, but I had to get on here and chat with y'all.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: So really appreciate you being here.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_00]: Please like, comment, subscribe, all the stuff.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: Let me know what you think, and we'll break down this trade here.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: My thoughts on it.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really have a script or a plan for this one.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: Just gonna be chatting with you also, again, really appreciate you being here.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: So the Jaguars are receiving cornerback, Greg Newsom, and the Jets, 2026, six round pick from the Browns.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: Mind you.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_00]: So the second big tray of the Jaguars is done with the Browns this year.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: The Browns are getting cornerback, Tyson Campbell.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: in Eagles, 2026, seventh round pick from the Jaguars.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: So, when you look at this trade, the Jaguars, based on their compensation and what they are giving up, player for player, Greg News and for Tyson Campbell, the Jaguars feel that Greg Newsman, his skill set is more valuable than Tyson Campbell's skill set in my opinion.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: Now, they also get a six round pick and a change for a seventh round pick, right?
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: But overall, the major calculus on this is Greg Newsom's contract and his ability, the Jag war is like more than cornerback, Tyson Campbell's contract and his ability.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: What are the contract details for Greg Newsom?
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: I'm asking this right now, and I'm going to answer this right now.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Newsom, talking about him as a player,
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: really appreciated his game.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: A corner out of Northwestern who kind of got a lot of press and excitement around him late in the process throughout the draft a few years back.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: And to me, he's battled some injuries, right?
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: But he is a very, very good player, 25 years old.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_00]: about the same age as Tyson Campbell.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_00]: Think he came in the same year as Tyson Campbell, actually.
- 3:10[SPEAKER_00]: Had him higher ranked in my draft rankings than I did Tyson Campbell for sure.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_00]: I really liked his game and this is an interesting one.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_00]: So he is still on his rookie deal.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: The Browns picked up his fifth year option for this year, I believe.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: 2025 is his fifth year option deal.
- 3:39[SPEAKER_00]: And sorry, this isn't perfect podcasting, this isn't a perfect show.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: We're doing this live, okay?
- 3:44[SPEAKER_00]: We're doing this as we're getting the information and processing everything all at once.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: making sure that the fifth year option that I'm talking about is accurate.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_00]: On April 3, 2024, the Cleveland Browns exercise, Greg Newsom's fifth year option.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: So, what does this do?
- 4:04[SPEAKER_00]: I believe that this gives the Jack Wars a corner back who are they, who they are more confident in.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_00]: Right now, for 2025, where the remainder of this season,
- 4:17[SPEAKER_00]: in a cornerback who they can then decide what they want to do about his contract following the year.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: They can decide they want to try to resign him.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: They can decide do they want to try to go in a different direction at the cornerback position outside of the guys they really like that they have including Travis Hunter.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: Believe Buster Brown is set to be a free agent,
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: but y'all obviously have Jordan Lewis at nickel.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: Travis Hunter going to be a fixture, right?
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: Darian Jones still in the mix as well.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: I can confirm about Buster Brown's contract right now.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: But I believe he is also set to be a free agent.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: Let's focus on the now.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: The Jaguar is now have a new top outside corner.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: Same as Greg News, and somehow PFF already has it, he's a Jacksonville Jaguar player.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: This is a guy that, again, not been perfect throughout his career, but to me is probably a better fit overall because I think he, I think he has better ball skills, I think he's
- 5:44[SPEAKER_00]: He's not as big but he's not a small guy either.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_00]: Six one, buck 95, we can go to his spider chart as well from the draft.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, he's a hell of an athlete.
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: I loved his college.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: Day by loved a lot of the things I've seen him do in Cleveland as a Cleveland Brown.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's been a big part of why they've been so good.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: I'm honestly
- 6:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'm honestly shocked that the Cleveland Browns wanted to make this trade, not because I don't believe in what Tyson Campbell can be and what Tyson Campbell has shown he can be at times, but because I think you just have a much more complete player in Greg Newsom.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: Now are they doing some roster calculus in saying, if we believe Tyson Campbell can be a CB2,
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: because they obviously have Denzel Ward.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_00]: Do we think maybe we're getting a deal on what he can be?
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: Cause again, he's $20 million per year.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: You look at the top corners now, they're getting 30 plus.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: So when he signed that deal, that was kind of an advantageous moment to sign a corner back to a big contract.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: Has he lived up to that contract by no means?
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: And I've been a Tyson Campbell defender to an extent.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: And this is not going to be like, oh, Jordan's flipping the script on Tyson Campbell because of Jaguar's trading him.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's not what this is going to be.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_00]: Tyson Campbell is a great run defender.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: He is a physical football player.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: He has gone.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: He has had ups and downs and coverage down the field.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_00]: And what, a season in which he was incredible, there's been a lot more downs than ups in his coverage down the field.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's the facts of the matter.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I've been critical of Tyson.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: I've talked about it this year.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: Tyson Campbell has had a lot of good moments.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: I mean,
- 8:00[SPEAKER_00]: Love Hacker.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: He was talking about this with Gus earlier, the Houston game, talked about, well, Jack Wars don't win that game if he doesn't get that ball out, right?
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they're not in the position to lose the game if he doesn't get beat on a 51-yard touchdown by Nico Collins because he bit on a double move, right?
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: So it goes both ways.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: He obviously cannot keep up with the best receivers
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I think the Jaguars, again, they now, they probably, my opinion is the Jaguars probably think Greg Newsom is a better player and their system right now in terms of covering opposing receivers.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: I believe the Jaguars did not want to pay Tyson Campbell the duration of his contract.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_00]: They did not want to be tied to that expensive contract for a player that they probably didn't feel could live up to it.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: Now you look at
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Newsom's stats against Tyson Campbell's stats this year.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_00]: If you want to go down that rabbit hole, which I don't think is always the right way to analyze things, but we can do that too, right?
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: Tyson Campbell's stats from a reception percentage standpoint are better.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_00]: He's allowed a 51.4 completion percentage, 37 targets, 19 completions, right?
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Newsom has allowed a 65% completion percentage.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_00]: And he's been aligned almost exclusively at outside corner this year.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: He does have a lot of experience in the slot.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: Prior to this year, he played almost as much slot corner as he did outside corner.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: So there's some births to tell you there, which is obviously always a good thing.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: But he's allowed 65% completion.
- 10:10[SPEAKER_00]: 15 catches on 23 targets.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: But here is the kicker.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's allowed 15 catches right on 23 targets.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: Ticing Campbell's allowed 19 on 37 targets.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: On those 19 targets, Tyson Campbell has allowed 312 yards receiving.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Newsom on those, and I said targets.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_00]: On those 19 receptions,
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: 312 yards receiving.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: On Greg Newsom's 15 receptions allowed, he is allowed 195 yards receiving.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_00]: He's allowing 13 yards per catch, Tyson Campbell is allowing 16.5.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: Tyson Campbell has given up in four straight weeks a completion of over 30 yards, 42 yards against Teahigins, two touchdowns in that game.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_00]: He allowed 50 yards against the Houston Texans,
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: 31 yards and 50 yards was the Nico Collins touchdown I refer to 31 yards against Ricky Pierce all 34 yards against Taekwant Thornton and I also love hack and I'm not criticizing him.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_00]: I just this is fresh on my mind because he was talking about it today.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: Talked about how you know Taekwant Thornton had to come back to that football against the Jags on Monday night football.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: If that throw was on the money and it wasn't on the money because Patrick and my homes was getting rocked.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_00]: If that throw was on the money, it looks even worse on Tyson Campbell because it's a touchdown.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: Tyson Campbell got burnt on that play.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: He did.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, I think Tyson Campbell's a pretty good player.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: So obviously dealt with a lot of injuries throughout his career.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is a player for player swap that the Jaguars probably feel like they're getting a little bit of a better player right now.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: I've always thought Greg Newsom was a little bit better than Tyson Campbell just from a talent perspective.
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: I think the biggest thing for the Jaguars right now is the way they feel about
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: the contract.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Newsome, his contract expires after the 2025 season.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_00]: Tyson Campbell's contract is a big one.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: We can pull it up right now.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: The Jaguar signed him to this contract before the 2024 campaign.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a four-year deal that began
- 13:02[SPEAKER_00]: and 2024, and the CAPS situation wouldn't pretty on it, right?
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: Dead money in 2025, 39 million, it remains to be seen exactly how that will play out, but it doesn't matter because they didn't do this to clear CAPS space for now.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_00]: They did to clear CAPS space for the future and give themselves more flexibility for the future.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: twenty twenty six cap hit our dead money I should say twenty twenty six dead money thirty two million dollars twenty twenty seven dead money thirteen point eight and then you could have ten million dollars in cap savings obviously you do post June one these numbers change a little bit um getting into twenty twenty seven so the browns cannot save money on Tyson Campbell's contract until twenty twenty seven
- 13:52[SPEAKER_00]: Again, we mentioned what it would be, pre-junone, cut post-junone if they decided to move on from Tyson Campbell.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: They would have a $5.68 million debt cap hit in an $18.3 million cap savings.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: So that is effectively when the Cleveland Browns could move on from Tyson Campbell, whereas
- 14:21[SPEAKER_00]: Beyond 2025, and, in my opinion, they probably got a player, they feel a little bit more comfortable with, or just as comfortable with, as Tyson, and Greg Newsom.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how to feel about this one exactly for the Browns.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to overanalyze that side.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel confident in saying that the Jaguars did this to give themselves a player they like and Greg Newsom and Cap Flex ability at the position moving for they will leave in Travis Hunter.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: They will leave in Buster Brown.
- 14:59[SPEAKER_00]: They will leave in Jordan Lewis.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: I think they like Jarion.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think that they also will potentially add more to the mix next year.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe you keep Buster, maybe you keep Greg, maybe you keep both.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_00]: But now they don't have to be tied to that and beholden to that, Tyson Campbell contract that has not aged very well.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, it has not aged very well and they're no longer beholden to that.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_00]: Now, Tyson Campbell, hard worker, good football player, tough football player, speed, length, physicality, good run defender.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: usually very good.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: But when he gets beat, he gets beat badly.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_00]: Again, you're allowed 51% reception percentage.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: That's great.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_00]: But 312 yards on 19 receptions allowed is a trotace.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: Again, 42 yards to need to
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: 50-yard, touchdown, Nico Collins.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_00]: Not even close on either of those routes.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_00]: San Francisco against Ricky Pierce all he was in decent position, but he had no clue where the ball was.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: Same thing against Chiefs, type one, Thorin.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they feel comfortable with him out there on an island, right?
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: His passer rating allowed right now is 107 this year.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: He's also drawn multiple penalties.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: Greg Newsson's passer rating allowed
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: also drawn two penalties.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: The bottom line is I think Greg Newsom's a more natural player.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: Tyson Campbell might have more impressive physical gifts when you combine the length and the strength and the speed, but Greg Newsom I think is a more natural corner back.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_00]: I really do.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: I've always thought that.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_00]: I loved him in the draft.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited he's in Jacksonville, but I'm also trying to be very objective and provide insight onto what I believe the jackwares are thinking here.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_00]: So he measured six foot, 192, pre-draft, wingspan of 73 and three quarters, which is not bulky length, ain't bulky, but arm length is actually 31 and eighth, which is not bad.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's not great, but it's not bad at all.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: 10 yards split 1.5 seconds, 40 yard dash, 4.39 seconds, vertical jump, 40 inches, broad jump, 1.23, three-cundrel, 6.9, that's 60th percentile.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: You did have 18 bench press reps.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty good.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_00]: This is a guy that I think has more losing focus here on the camera.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think he has more upside.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think you can be a better player than Tyson Campbell, but I think it ultimately comes down to giving yourself a player that you think can be as good as Campbell while also giving yourself the flexibility to figure it out in the meantime.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: And they can now do that.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: They're not beholden to that massive couple of dead money hits to the cap that Tyson Campbell is about to have in 2026 and 2027.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_00]: And with that, we'll pretty much go ahead and wrap it up all.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: Make sure there's nothing else to report here on this situation.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_00]: But again, Jaguar is getting a six-rounder, and hey, here's something to report.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Jack Wars sending that 7th rounder, brown sending a 6 rounder.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_00]: I like that too.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think this is, I think it's a good trade for the checks, which of course, good old James Gladstone.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty much all he does is hit.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_00]: That's wild.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_00]: Let me know what y'all think in the comment section below.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_00]: If you enjoy the content, please like and subscribe.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be back tomorrow morning.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: Y'all have a good night.
