- 0:20We are back with the burgers again.
- 0:23I always love catching up with you guys.
- 0:26Likewise.
- 0:27We're deep in the Masters
- 0:28CrossFit Games season.
- 0:30Lynette, you've done some other things,
- 0:32so I want to catch up with
- 0:34some of the things you've done.
- 0:35I want to talk about the
- 0:36Masters Games and kind of
- 0:38how the season is going so far.
- 0:42So let's start with,
- 0:44you're in kind of this big lull.
- 0:49How hard is it to stay
- 0:50motivated for three months
- 0:54while you're waiting for
- 0:55the games to come up?
- 0:57Yeah,
- 0:57so like 12 weeks from qualification
- 1:02to the games,
- 1:03which is four or five weeks
- 1:04longer than normal.
- 1:06We kind of took the approach
- 1:07that in the beginning,
- 1:08we're going to take a
- 1:09couple of weeks to kind of breathe in.
- 1:11We still work out,
- 1:12just kind of take the
- 1:13intensity down just to
- 1:14start to warm up to the season.
- 1:17And then once we get out to
- 1:18that 10 to eight weeks range,
- 1:19we'll start to ramp it up.
- 1:21And so that kind of gave me a little bit
- 1:23more mental break of like, hey,
- 1:25we'll do fitness once a day.
- 1:28It's much easier on the
- 1:29schedule and just kind of
- 1:30start touching special stuff,
- 1:33minimizing the time.
- 1:34And that gave me a pretty good refresh.
- 1:37But overall, how do I keep sane?
- 1:39How do I keep going?
- 1:40Lynette helps the logistics
- 1:43behind this of getting training partners,
- 1:45going to different gyms, going
- 1:46you know,
- 1:47traveling and working out with
- 1:49the pan chicks, like changing things up,
- 1:51making it different, knowing, hey,
- 1:53this is games training.
- 1:54We're going to do things
- 1:55different and just going
- 1:56into that with that mentality.
- 1:57Yeah.
- 1:58And you should also mention
- 1:59your fitness outside of the gym lately.
- 2:02Oh, yeah.
- 2:03What's that?
- 2:05And we have a distraction.
- 2:07That was my next question.
- 2:08Okay, there you go.
- 2:10On the same wavelength.
- 2:11There you go.
- 2:13Climbing ladders, carrying odd objects.
- 2:15We partnered with a friend
- 2:16and bought a property that
- 2:17had an older barn,
- 2:18and we're refurbishing the
- 2:20barn into a gym,
- 2:23just like a personal workout space.
- 2:24And so Lynette has to really
- 2:27pull me from it because I
- 2:28would work on it all day, every day.
- 2:29But we started with the rule
- 2:32that training first,
- 2:33get the training done,
- 2:34then whatever energy I have
- 2:35left over after training, family, work,
- 2:37I can go work on the barn.
- 2:39So it's slow progress.
- 2:40So we're at the end of June right now.
- 2:44So there's still eight weeks
- 2:46before the games.
- 2:47Yeah.
- 2:48You're not even to that six-week mark yet.
- 2:50Right.
- 2:51So it's kind of the ideal
- 2:53time to do other stuff.
- 2:56Yeah.
- 2:57Yeah, sure.
- 2:58Yeah, it is.
- 3:01Why the barn?
- 3:04I know that's a loaded question.
- 3:07It goes back to his childhood.
- 3:09Yeah.
- 3:10His parents had a property
- 3:11with a big barn.
- 3:12I had a big barn.
- 3:13And I think it has nostalgia to it.
- 3:15Yeah.
- 3:16And we live in kind of a
- 3:18tight neighborhood,
- 3:18and I always wanted to have
- 3:20some property and literally a barn.
- 3:23And it used to be that would
- 3:24be a shop where I would
- 3:25repair cars and build wood
- 3:28and build things out of wood.
- 3:29Now it's, okay, well,
- 3:30that's going to be my home gym because...
- 3:33you know, we've kind of,
- 3:35we're outgrowing our space here,
- 3:37our home gym in the garage,
- 3:39or our corner in the basement,
- 3:40and it just made sense, hey,
- 3:41let's get a property that's, you know,
- 3:43just a little bit of drive
- 3:44outside the country,
- 3:45and then we can go out and train,
- 3:46and it just creates this
- 3:48space that we can focus on it.
- 3:50Because we, like, during the cold months,
- 3:53we move everything to the
- 3:54basement and then we move everything.
- 3:56It's a lot of work.
- 3:57Like,
- 3:59it's not really a choice because of
- 4:02his work.
- 4:03It's not realistic that we
- 4:04can make it to the gym we love,
- 4:06Choctaw's.
- 4:07That's still going to be our community,
- 4:09our actual gym where we
- 4:10would do qualifiers.
- 4:12I mean, nothing replaces that community.
- 4:15Stop asking my questions
- 4:17before I get to ask them.
- 4:18We just.
- 4:19we just know each other too
- 4:20well but like the reality
- 4:22of it is if we have a
- 4:24window in the morning
- 4:25before his meetings or a
- 4:26lunchtime break that we can
- 4:28get something done here
- 4:29it's just something
- 4:30convenient and so kind of
- 4:32having that one space that
- 4:34he can work from and work
- 4:36out you know it will make
- 4:38it yeah very very
- 4:40convenient so is there a
- 4:42house on the property there is yeah
- 4:44Are you doing anything with the house?
- 4:46So yes, we, the goal is to have it rented.
- 4:49Um,
- 4:50it's funny cause we tell this story
- 4:52that we bought a barn that
- 4:53came with the house.
- 4:55Um,
- 4:55but we actually have to do something
- 4:56with the house.
- 4:57So like he said,
- 4:57we partnered with our good friend.
- 4:59He's also a realtor,
- 5:00so he has a lot of
- 5:01experience and that's why
- 5:02we actually went into this.
- 5:03I think by ourselves with
- 5:04everything we have going on,
- 5:06we couldn't have pulled it off.
- 5:07But so we are rehabbing the
- 5:08house currently and
- 5:10hopefully we can have it
- 5:10rented and hopefully we can
- 5:12have some really cool, um,
- 5:14people that move in there
- 5:16and get the whole working
- 5:18out thing in a barn that is
- 5:19behind the property.
- 5:20Yeah, don't bother the renters.
- 5:23Yeah, that would come with a little bit of
- 5:27Possible conflict if you
- 5:28don't have the right tenant, right?
- 5:30Yeah,
- 5:30but it's like the way it's laid out
- 5:31is actually on its own like
- 5:33parcel like so it It's in a
- 5:37two acre lot and it backs up to the wood.
- 5:39So Yes, it's kind of weird.
- 5:42But at the same time it's
- 5:43out of the way the garage
- 5:45doors will be in on the
- 5:46back of the barn So it like
- 5:48we won't have it shouldn't
- 5:49be on their face, you know,
- 5:51I mean so and we'll be good good people.
- 5:54Yeah, I
- 5:55So, speaking of chalk dust,
- 5:57I know that's your community,
- 5:58that's your gym, that you love that.
- 6:01And you say you're not doing
- 6:02this to like get away from that.
- 6:03This is just your home gym, right?
- 6:08Do you ever feel guilty
- 6:10about some of the time you
- 6:12spend at chalk dust like
- 6:14it's not class time or not...
- 6:19Yeah, so for sure.
- 6:21So we are very good friends
- 6:23with Mike and Caitlin.
- 6:24And from the beginning,
- 6:25they have been super accommodating.
- 6:27They've always opened the
- 6:28gym to basically anything we needed.
- 6:31But sometimes, you know, for example,
- 6:34if we are working out at
- 6:35noon and we need the rings,
- 6:38that is a particular
- 6:39member's square that he always goes to.
- 6:42So we're like, oh.
- 6:44And everybody's like, oh my gosh, please,
- 6:46go ahead.
- 6:47There's never a hesitation
- 6:49and we work around it
- 6:50really as much as we can.
- 6:52But there's always this like,
- 6:54don't want to interrupt classes,
- 6:55don't want to take
- 6:56importance away from what
- 6:57the members need.
- 6:58And that,
- 6:59I don't think it has been an
- 7:00issue at all.
- 7:02I think it's, I mean,
- 7:03the community saw us grow
- 7:05from day one there.
- 7:06So I think there's a very...
- 7:08great like working
- 7:09relationship but sometimes
- 7:11it's like if the gym is
- 7:12packed and Rudy's like
- 7:14moving equipment around it
- 7:15just feel like we're
- 7:17invading people's space so
- 7:19um again it's not something
- 7:20that they ever make us feel
- 7:22that way but it's just
- 7:23something that we're like oh like
- 7:25yeah you know yeah it's
- 7:27natural it's it's not your
- 7:29space even though as a
- 7:31crosser you always feel
- 7:32like your gym is part of
- 7:34yours right yeah yeah I
- 7:36mean it's like our second
- 7:37home like our kids grew up
- 7:39there like it's literally
- 7:41yeah so it is really fun
- 7:43like we I think he trains
- 7:45there probably three times a week yeah
- 7:49so it's really nice to see
- 7:50like sometimes we drop in
- 7:51during the noon class
- 7:53sometimes it's the evening
- 7:54so we get to see kind of
- 7:55everybody um and the the
- 7:58the goal is to make this
- 7:59barn like an extension of
- 8:00the community so right now
- 8:02there is really only work
- 8:04to be done there not any
- 8:05workouts but once we have
- 8:07it in good enough shape
- 8:09that we like we want to
- 8:10host everybody like anybody
- 8:11that wants to come change
- 8:13it up and work out with us
- 8:15on the weekends or whatever
- 8:16is more than welcome too yeah
- 8:19So I was watching an
- 8:20interview with Saxon
- 8:21Panczyk and Dave Castro today.
- 8:23And I just talked to Saxon a
- 8:25couple of weeks ago.
- 8:27So he's really into,
- 8:30after that year of injury,
- 8:32like getting more connected
- 8:33with the community.
- 8:34He learned that like not
- 8:36being connected with the
- 8:37community actually was hurtful to him.
- 8:40Especially when you get hurt
- 8:42and there's like nobody around, right?
- 8:45So he asked Dave Castro if
- 8:50in order to win the prize
- 8:52money at the games,
- 8:53should it be a requirement
- 8:55that the person have their L1?
- 8:59Dave Gastro said, I think it should be.
- 9:02We need to get that
- 9:03connection back with the
- 9:06elite athletes and their community,
- 9:08which is why it's so cool
- 9:09watching you guys at Chalk
- 9:11Dust in that community you have.
- 9:16Is it a stress release when
- 9:18you kind of get to go just
- 9:19drop in on a class?
- 9:21Oh my gosh, yeah.
- 9:22This week, I've made it to the 6.15 a.m.
- 9:25class three days, and on my notes,
- 9:29more than the score or the
- 9:31actual workout I get,
- 9:32it's just so refreshing to
- 9:33start the day with friendly faces that
- 9:36I don't know,
- 9:37it just sets your day up to
- 9:39be a better day.
- 9:40So for sure.
- 9:42I personally, I program for Rudy.
- 9:44I program for other people.
- 9:46And I don't want to program for myself.
- 9:48I program for the kids.
- 9:50I just want to show up and
- 9:51do what's written.
- 9:53So for me, when I'm programming here,
- 9:56I tend to overthink things for myself.
- 10:00And then I just end up doing
- 10:01something that, I don't know,
- 10:03is probably very biased for myself.
- 10:05So taking that away from my
- 10:07plate and just going to
- 10:08class is personally my favorite.
- 10:12He knows that.
- 10:12615 is like most recently
- 10:16the class I could make
- 10:17because the day gets kind
- 10:18of busy and I get back
- 10:20before his first training session.
- 10:22So I love it.
- 10:23It's the best way to start my day.
- 10:25Rudy and I were talking
- 10:26before we hit record on
- 10:28this camera about that
- 10:30sometimes you forget what
- 10:31this is all about, right?
- 10:33It's about being healthy.
- 10:34Yes.
- 10:35Being mobile into your latter years.
- 10:38Being able to run around
- 10:39with your kids and grandkids.
- 10:40Yep.
- 10:42By being connected with the community,
- 10:45lose sight of that for sure
- 10:47yeah for sure and like I
- 10:50guess our story is not
- 10:51necessarily the traditional
- 10:53individual elite story
- 10:54right um it's more like you
- 10:57know we had this goal in
- 10:58our community saw us like
- 11:00come up with this goal and
- 11:02support us all the way
- 11:03through winning the first
- 11:05game so like it really felt
- 11:07like everybody's investment
- 11:09was in from day one yeah
- 11:12like at first I'm sure that
- 11:13some members were like what what
- 11:15What are they doing like why
- 11:17is it working out so much
- 11:18and then they started to
- 11:18get it and so it's just
- 11:20been this journey that we
- 11:23Like I can't even picture
- 11:26not having a community like
- 11:28that's not even something
- 11:29that it Would make sense
- 11:31for us like I feel it's
- 11:33it's I'm part of that community.
- 11:35It's my community and I know
- 11:36the community feels like a
- 11:39I am one of them.
- 11:40And that's why I think they
- 11:41have such a strong connection,
- 11:42because they're like, oh,
- 11:43that's one of us.
- 11:44We're going to Madison to watch Rudy.
- 11:46It's one of us.
- 11:47So it's strong.
- 11:49Yeah,
- 11:49Saxon told me that one of the best
- 11:50things he ever did was go
- 11:51back to coaching.
- 11:53That's cool.
- 11:54That's cool.
- 11:55And it gave him that
- 11:56connection with the
- 11:57community that he missed.
- 11:59That's cool.
- 12:00And you guys know the story.
- 12:01He had an affiliate that he
- 12:02owned and coached and
- 12:04programmed for and all that.
- 12:05And that got kind of taken away from him.
- 12:08So it's cool that he's found his way back.
- 12:10That's really cool, yeah.
- 12:12So one last question about the barn.
- 12:14I watch you guys on
- 12:15Instagram like a hawk and I
- 12:17see like these structures
- 12:20that look like they're outside the barn.
- 12:24Yes.
- 12:25Is that like rings, rope climb, fire tower,
- 12:31skyscraper?
- 12:32What's going on there?
- 12:34Just like any other good
- 12:36home renovation project,
- 12:38we've had some scope creep.
- 12:40And the size of the barn
- 12:42extend it a little bit,
- 12:43extend it some more,
- 12:45and then at a certain point we're like,
- 12:46well,
- 12:47I want to be able to do 50 feet of things,
- 12:49because that's such a CrossFit standard.
- 12:51It's got to be longer than 50 feet,
- 12:52so it kept growing.
- 12:54And then the inside,
- 12:55I designed an area that had
- 12:57basically a 17-foot truss
- 12:59with very open space so
- 13:00that we can have rope
- 13:02climbs in the rings and all that.
- 13:05So yes, it is by design.
- 13:08So I work with systems all day.
- 13:10I hear the term scope creep
- 13:13probably 30 times a day.
- 13:15Correct.
- 13:16And usually that comes with a no,
- 13:19you can't do that.
- 13:20That was me until I said, fine, fine.
- 13:24I give up.
- 13:25Like, sure, have this barn.
- 13:28Now it's like double the size.
- 13:30But if you look at it from the side,
- 13:32it's just like half a barn
- 13:34and then dirt and poles
- 13:35sticking up at this point.
- 13:37Right now.
- 13:38And I am like his
- 13:40construction partner apparently.
- 13:43And he puts a lot more trust
- 13:44in my abilities.
- 13:46She's fantastic.
- 13:49Lots of trust in ladders I saw.
- 13:50Yeah.
- 13:51Yeah.
- 13:52Yeah.
- 13:55He said, let's go do a little framing.
- 13:57That's not the framing I had in mind.
- 14:00I think the real episode we
- 14:02should have done is out
- 14:03live at the site of the barn.
- 14:04We should.
- 14:05Next time.
- 14:07I thought about it, but I was like,
- 14:08I don't even know if
- 14:09there's like internet
- 14:10connection out there or if
- 14:12we don't have wifi.
- 14:13We will, we will have wifi.
- 14:15Not yet.
- 14:16Yeah.
- 14:16All right.
- 14:17So,
- 14:18so let's get into a little bit of the
- 14:20master's CrossFit news.
- 14:21This is the first year of
- 14:22your split off from the games.
- 14:26I've talked to Jason Grubb,
- 14:28I've talked to people who
- 14:29have been to the games several times,
- 14:30talked to you.
- 14:32They're not as affected
- 14:33about the split off as
- 14:34people who have never made it.
- 14:37And there seems to be a
- 14:38clear delineation about
- 14:40that because they feel
- 14:42cheated that they don't get
- 14:44the experience that you all
- 14:46got being at the big show
- 14:49with the big kit.
- 14:52I think the big kit is the
- 14:54straw that broke the camel's back.
- 14:57You're talking the gear kit.
- 14:59Correct.
- 15:01Okay.
- 15:02So it's been announced that, well,
- 15:05it's been assumed that
- 15:07based on the survey,
- 15:08you all will get three tops,
- 15:11three bottoms, and some other stuff.
- 15:14One wristband, which for him,
- 15:16I don't know.
- 15:17The sweatbands, yes.
- 15:18Yes.
- 15:19And that it is required that
- 15:21you wear this uniform for all events.
- 15:23Correct.
- 15:24I've known you a long time now, Rudy.
- 15:27You sweat like nobody's business.
- 15:30Yes.
- 15:30It's going to be a challenge.
- 15:32Who is going to run your
- 15:34stuff to laundry in between
- 15:36events so that people can
- 15:40bear to watch you finish the event?
- 15:43Well, that might be part of strategy.
- 15:44Because if I get ripe enough,
- 15:46it'll affect my competitors.
- 15:48He will.
- 15:49Yeah, I mean,
- 15:51we'll just have to do laundry quick.
- 15:52We'll have to pick up some
- 15:53extra stuff just to be prepared.
- 15:58At the same time,
- 15:58I'm still grateful for this opportunity.
- 16:01Yes,
- 16:02those that are just joining us this
- 16:04year from a master's perspective,
- 16:07it is different it's a new
- 16:08thing but I think it's an
- 16:09opportunity where this this
- 16:11will be the better thing I
- 16:12really I really do and I
- 16:13would say it I i can
- 16:15absolutely understand
- 16:17people that are comparing
- 16:19you know what they got for
- 16:21the last however many years
- 16:23to versus what they're
- 16:24getting now and I don't
- 16:27want to sound like I'm
- 16:28complaining but I think
- 16:30like with the expansion of the
- 16:34the athletes, I mean,
- 16:36it's going to have to be
- 16:38different because the
- 16:39budget has to be different.
- 16:42And I know there's a big
- 16:43controversy around all of that.
- 16:46And all I'm just going to say, like,
- 16:49If they have to make some
- 16:50cuts on the things that
- 16:51they're giving the athletes,
- 16:53then I feel like they
- 16:54should make some
- 16:55concessions too as to what
- 16:57they're allowed to wear.
- 16:58So for example,
- 16:59if they're not giving out
- 17:00hats or headbands or more
- 17:03than one pair of wristbands,
- 17:04then allow the athletes to
- 17:06wear their own.
- 17:07So there has to be some kind
- 17:09of a compromise because...
- 17:10Here's my proposal.
- 17:14Every day there's one
- 17:15highlighted event that you
- 17:16must wear your uniform for.
- 17:19On the other events,
- 17:21wear what you need to to
- 17:22get through the weekend.
- 17:25So this is our highlighted event.
- 17:27Everybody's going to be in uniform.
- 17:29It's going to look cool.
- 17:31And then on the other ones, Hey,
- 17:33You can wear your sponsor
- 17:34stuff so you might be able
- 17:35to make some money to get yourself here.
- 17:37Yeah, exactly.
- 17:38Yeah, that's true.
- 17:39And help pay for these trips.
- 17:41Yeah.
- 17:42I think there just has to be
- 17:43some compromise.
- 17:44You know,
- 17:45it should not be so rigid where
- 17:48you're not giving them what
- 17:50they have gotten in the past,
- 17:51yet you expect them to have
- 17:53fresh clothing for every day.
- 17:55Like, that's a little bit tricky.
- 17:57Yeah.
- 17:58I mean, like, it's a first world problem,
- 18:01right?
- 18:01Like...
- 18:02It's not the end of the world.
- 18:04I think what happens in the
- 18:06CrossFit space is we get
- 18:08into these arguments and
- 18:09it's either all the way
- 18:10over here or all the way over here.
- 18:14Why can't we meet in the middle and say,
- 18:16you know what?
- 18:17We're streaming this.
- 18:18This is going to be the prime time thing.
- 18:20Wear your uniform for that.
- 18:22Exactly.
- 18:22That's a great idea.
- 18:25I mean,
- 18:26we're here to find the fittest people.
- 18:28What you're wearing doesn't
- 18:29really matter that much.
- 18:31And at the end of the day,
- 18:32if you're stinky, you're stinky.
- 18:34It's just what it is.
- 18:35Yeah.
- 18:37And you could have like a
- 18:37dress code policy that you
- 18:39must wear at least a pair of shorts and,
- 18:42you know,
- 18:43just to make sure nobody goes
- 18:44completely off the rails.
- 18:47Yes.
- 18:47I mean,
- 18:48most of the field takes their shirt
- 18:49off anyway.
- 18:50So it's like,
- 18:51why does it really matter that much?
- 18:52Right.
- 18:53You're right.
- 18:53Right.
- 18:55So it's in Birmingham, Alabama.
- 18:58Do we know,
- 18:59have they told you guys what
- 19:01the facility is?
- 19:03I mean, they told us where it's at.
- 19:06I forget the name,
- 19:07but they said it's at this place.
- 19:09I'm trying to remember the name.
- 19:11Some guy's name.
- 19:12Yeah, some guy's name.
- 19:13But from what I understand,
- 19:15that's where it's at.
- 19:16That's where it's going to
- 19:17be completely contained,
- 19:18unless there's some crazy
- 19:19thing with like a swim or a
- 19:21trail run that we aren't aware of.
- 19:23But I would expect it to be
- 19:24all at that one facility,
- 19:26the convention center.
- 19:27I talked to Joe,
- 19:28I've talked to him a couple
- 19:30of times in the last couple of weeks,
- 19:32and he's super excited.
- 19:34Like the venue they got, he said,
- 19:35is really nice.
- 19:37So I'm excited.
- 19:38I take him at his word.
- 19:40Legends this year was at a
- 19:41beautiful facility.
- 19:43Yeah, I heard.
- 19:44So I take him at his word
- 19:45for that because they
- 19:47followed through on that.
- 19:49My hope is that I get to do
- 19:50behind the scenes at the Masters Games.
- 19:53That's why I've been talking
- 19:54to him so much.
- 19:55I'll find out tomorrow.
- 19:56Okay.
- 19:57If we have full-blown coverage.
- 20:00Media access.
- 20:01Good.
- 20:01Yeah, so I hope we can do that.
- 20:05So you're going to ramp up mid-July.
- 20:09Yeah.
- 20:10We're kind of starting to
- 20:11just throw a little bit
- 20:12extra spice here and there,
- 20:14but nothing really too crazy yet.
- 20:17Yep.
- 20:17Do you do any kind of odd
- 20:19object training more now
- 20:20than you do during the rest of the year?
- 20:22I would say yes because, you know,
- 20:25earlier on in the season we
- 20:26focus on what is likely to come up.
- 20:29So sandbags are typically not a thing or,
- 20:32you know, carries outside.
- 20:34So, yeah,
- 20:35I would say that the training
- 20:36changes the closer we get to the games.
- 20:39Totally.
- 20:41So I want to move away from...
- 20:43that piece and I want to
- 20:44talk about kind of what's
- 20:45been going on around you
- 20:46guys this year your
- 20:48daughter got to compete in
- 20:50the open for the first time
- 20:51ever that was really cool
- 20:54um your kids are they're so
- 20:57involved in so many things
- 20:59I get to watch track meets
- 21:01and cross country and all
- 21:03this stuff on instagram and
- 21:03it's so cool seeing how you
- 21:06guys have set the example
- 21:07for them and how that's
- 21:09working leah did awesome in
- 21:11the open thank you
- 21:12But you guys made the choice
- 21:14to kind of take a step back
- 21:15this year and let her do
- 21:18her school thing.
- 21:20When we look around the CrossFit space,
- 21:21a lot of young girls are
- 21:24backing out of the sport.
- 21:28Does that weigh heavy on
- 21:29your mind when you see your
- 21:31kids moving into this CrossFit thing?
- 21:33Yeah,
- 21:34I think that it would be silly not to
- 21:37learn from what other very
- 21:39successful teenagers in the
- 21:41sport have gone through and
- 21:43for sure take some red flags that,
- 21:46you know, say, hey, you know,
- 21:47for us it's like CrossFit
- 21:49is going to be there.
- 21:51You only get to do middle
- 21:52school track once or cross country once.
- 21:56And while CrossFit has been
- 21:58part of their lives since
- 22:00they were three and four,
- 22:02I mean,
- 22:03we have old videos of them doing
- 22:05toes to bar in the basement
- 22:06when they were toddlers.
- 22:09It's not that we don't want
- 22:11to take it seriously,
- 22:12it's just that we see it as
- 22:14a compliment to the sport
- 22:16that they're working on.
- 22:18and when they decide to you
- 22:21know take it on a little
- 22:23bit more competitively
- 22:25we'll be there to help them
- 22:26but I think they see the
- 22:29hard work that goes in and
- 22:30the dedication that
- 22:33It's almost like, you know,
- 22:34if they don't feel like training with dad,
- 22:36I don't make them train.
- 22:38But they know that if they
- 22:40want to do really well,
- 22:41they're going to have to
- 22:42make choices that are
- 22:43different than what they're making today.
- 22:45And so, for example,
- 22:46with Leah doing really well
- 22:47in the open and qualifying for quarters,
- 22:51it happened that it was the
- 22:52same week as like a big
- 22:53track meet she had.
- 22:55And if the workouts would
- 22:57have been different and she
- 22:58wanted to do them,
- 22:59I would have been open to let her try,
- 23:02but they were very leg heavy.
- 23:04And I was like,
- 23:04the last thing I want is
- 23:06her to be lined up on that
- 23:07start line on Saturday
- 23:09morning and like feel unprepared or
- 23:13her confidence be shaky
- 23:15because of the workout she
- 23:16did that she didn't really have to do.
- 23:18So it was an easy choice that, hey,
- 23:21focus on track and CrossFit
- 23:22will be there.
- 23:23Because they have so many
- 23:26external pressures nowadays
- 23:28that adding to that and
- 23:30what they have to deal with
- 23:31is just not something we want to do.
- 23:34The other thing that helped you avoid,
- 23:36and I know this wasn't the intention,
- 23:38is that if she would have made the games,
- 23:41those would have been on
- 23:42the same weekend.
- 23:42Oh my gosh, that is so stressful.
- 23:45We did talk about that.
- 23:46Mason asked me, he's like,
- 23:47who would you have chosen?
- 23:49And I'm like, duh, Leah.
- 23:52I have to be there for her first.
- 23:53And then he's like, who would be with Dad?
- 23:55I'm like...
- 23:56you he's like me so um coach
- 24:00mason there you go jump on
- 24:02the phone yeah call mom so
- 24:04no it would have been extra
- 24:07challenging for us yeah
- 24:08yeah but yeah yeah so I was
- 24:11actually talking to tony
- 24:12tursky who qualified I
- 24:14think 55 to 60 okay uh and
- 24:17he coaches a mother and
- 24:19daughter who both meet oh wow
- 24:22and we're actually going to
- 24:22try to get both of them on
- 24:24as to what this
- 24:25complication does to them.
- 24:28Another proposal I'd like to make is
- 24:31It's all age group.
- 24:32Why not have them in the
- 24:33same place at the same time?
- 24:35I agree.
- 24:36And get all the eyes in one location.
- 24:38Yes.
- 24:39I agree with that.
- 24:40That's a really great suggestion.
- 24:41Yeah, for sure.
- 24:42And pool the budgets.
- 24:44Yeah.
- 24:45Then you only have to pay for one facility,
- 24:46not two.
- 24:47Yeah.
- 24:48Equipment is all the same.
- 24:49Right.
- 24:50Yeah.
- 24:50No, that's a great idea.
- 24:51It is.
- 24:52Yeah.
- 24:53Yeah.
- 24:53And like you said,
- 24:54it's like separating like the...
- 24:57The potential for viewers to
- 25:00keep track of two things,
- 25:02it's much lower than if you just said,
- 25:05you know, stay tuned for,
- 25:08you're gonna see teenagers
- 25:10through 60 plus compete.
- 25:13I think that's much more
- 25:15attractive than two.
- 25:17While I'm on my proposal riff,
- 25:18I'm gonna go with,
- 25:20you guys should've competed
- 25:21before the Indians.
- 25:25The way it's set up in
- 25:26Dallas now that some
- 25:28information's been released,
- 25:30the vendor village is going
- 25:31to have the beer garden and
- 25:32the big screen TV.
- 25:34Well, with all the elites going and team,
- 25:36there's going to be a lot
- 25:37of breaks during the day.
- 25:39Why not have you guys
- 25:40compete ahead of time and show,
- 25:42re-air the events in that
- 25:45beer garden in between all those events?
- 25:49And then you guys are all highlighted.
- 25:52Still on the big stage.
- 25:53At least in some way.
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:55Yeah.
- 25:55I agree.
- 25:56Yeah.
- 25:57I mean,
- 25:58I feel like there is a risk with
- 25:59people being, like,
- 26:00CrossFit out by the time
- 26:02the Masters compete.
- 26:03You know, like, people... I don't know.
- 26:06Another reason to go first.
- 26:07Yeah.
- 26:08So, how long do the Olympics last?
- 26:11Have we talked about the
- 26:12fact that the Olympics start, what,
- 26:14July 26th?
- 26:15And when do the CrossFit Games start?
- 26:18Oh, smack dab in the middle.
- 26:19Yeah.
- 26:19So, like, we...
- 26:21we're okay we're after all
- 26:23that you know that's a
- 26:24labor day so yeah I will
- 26:26say I think I saw that the
- 26:28um uh adaptive olympics I
- 26:31don't think that's the right
- 26:33The Paralympics?
- 26:34Yes.
- 26:35Are the same weekend as the Masters.
- 26:38Really?
- 26:38I believe.
- 26:39I'm almost positive that that is the case,
- 26:42which I see it as like a
- 26:44great opportunity for inspiration.
- 26:45You know,
- 26:46we watch the Golden Girls every
- 26:48night before bed when he's competing.
- 26:50That's what he chooses to watch.
- 26:52I think this is the nugget
- 26:54from the interview.
- 26:55There you go.
- 26:56Rudy watches the Golden Girls to relax.
- 26:58Yeah.
- 26:58Hey,
- 26:59next time you can wear his Golden
- 27:00Girls shirt.
- 27:01Yeah, you can have a shirt.
- 27:02Yeah.
- 27:03Who's your favorite Golden Girl or kid?
- 27:07The old lady.
- 27:07What's her name?
- 27:08The mom?
- 27:09The mom.
- 27:12I forget her name.
- 27:14I have no idea.
- 27:14I only knew of the Golden
- 27:16Girls when he told me.
- 27:17He's like,
- 27:18let's find the Golden Girls on TV.
- 27:20And I'm like, the who?
- 27:22Yeah.
- 27:22So it's a thing now.
- 27:24My go-to is Friends.
- 27:25I've seen it so many times
- 27:26that I can fall asleep to
- 27:27it and not feel like I'm
- 27:28missing anything.
- 27:29Mine is The Office.
- 27:30I love it.
- 27:31It never gets old.
- 27:34Now it's going to kill me
- 27:35until it comes to my head who that is.
- 27:39Sophia?
- 27:40Sophia, yes.
- 27:40Oh, really?
- 27:41Okay.
- 27:41That's the old lady.
- 27:44In real life,
- 27:45she was actually younger than
- 27:46all of the other ones.
- 27:46That's so funny.
- 27:47That was the cool thing.
- 27:50She was in the,
- 27:50now we're just way off the tracks,
- 27:53but in the Stallone movie, Stop Her,
- 27:55My Mom Will Shoot.
- 27:55Yes, exactly.
- 27:57Maybe she played the mom to
- 27:58semester school.
- 27:59Oh, yeah.
- 28:10I want to talk about Lynette
- 28:11and some of the additional
- 28:12things you've taken on.
- 28:15It kind of started last year
- 28:16with Emma Tall at the games.
- 28:20And we talked about that
- 28:21post-games last year.
- 28:23But now I find out,
- 28:26not from my friend Lynette,
- 28:29but from Max himself,
- 28:31that he had hired you as his coach.
- 28:33Yes.
- 28:34And then I called you,
- 28:36I texted you right after that going,
- 28:38how come I have to hear
- 28:39this news from someone other than you?
- 28:42It's so funny timing because
- 28:44I think it happened like
- 28:45two days before that interview.
- 28:47And I was like, I don't know.
- 28:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:50I know, excuses.
- 28:51I'm sorry, Scott.
- 28:53But yeah, Max, super exciting.
- 28:56So it's funny because...
- 28:59We've been following Max's
- 29:00career for a couple of
- 29:01years because Jamie picked
- 29:03him as a dark horse two
- 29:06years ago at the Orlando semifinal.
- 29:09And he almost made it.
- 29:11And he's so close, so close.
- 29:14So he said that he needed
- 29:16somebody to kind of take
- 29:18over some of the thought
- 29:20process and let him just train.
- 29:24And I thought, well, you didn't pick any,
- 29:26you couldn't have picked anybody better.
- 29:28Thank you.
- 29:29So what exactly do you do for Max?
- 29:33So I would say right now
- 29:35we're kind of in the learning process.
- 29:38So when he first called me up,
- 29:40I was super honored.
- 29:42And honestly,
- 29:43I didn't expect it because
- 29:45I'm in the master space.
- 29:47So he's an individual.
- 29:49But I interacted with Max at
- 29:53Southland camp.
- 29:54So kind of everything goes
- 29:55back to Southland, which is great.
- 29:57um and you know I think that
- 30:01he was a really great guy
- 30:03great athlete and we kind
- 30:04of stayed in touch a little
- 30:05bit and when he called me
- 30:07up I was like totally I
- 30:09can't like it's really hard
- 30:11for me to not to like want
- 30:13to jump in and help people
- 30:15that are amazing humans so
- 30:18I was totally in from the
- 30:19beginning I was like then
- 30:20we'll just figure out how
- 30:20to make it work but yes
- 30:22And so it was,
- 30:23I think like maybe three
- 30:25weeks before semifinals.
- 30:27So at that point, you know,
- 30:28we weren't really changing anything,
- 30:30right?
- 30:31The fitness was done.
- 30:32The fitness was in the bar.
- 30:34There's not much you can do at that point.
- 30:35And what I just started
- 30:37working with him on was like, Hey,
- 30:39the workouts are released.
- 30:41You're going to test them, send them,
- 30:42send me videos,
- 30:43and then we'll break them
- 30:44down and talk about it.
- 30:45So that was something that
- 30:47I'm comfortable with
- 30:48because it's the same process for Rudy.
- 30:50So we just kind of hit it
- 30:52off that way and shared strategies.
- 30:55It's a very collaborative process.
- 30:57I mean,
- 30:58I respect the way he thinks and how
- 31:01he approaches things.
- 31:02And I am more than anything
- 31:04just trying to bring a
- 31:05different perspective.
- 31:07to challenge his thinking a
- 31:08little bit and just, you know,
- 31:10maybe pick up on certain
- 31:11biases or things that he
- 31:13might not be noticing.
- 31:15So that was kind of the
- 31:16initial work together.
- 31:19Then he's like, hey,
- 31:20do you think you can come to Semis?
- 31:21And I'm like, yes, we'll make it work.
- 31:24So it was Leah's last day of
- 31:26middle school.
- 31:27So it was a little tricky
- 31:29leaving town a little late,
- 31:31but made it there before his first event.
- 31:34And seriously,
- 31:36I am so proud of how he
- 31:39performed at semifinals.
- 31:41He did so great.
- 31:43And what I brought to the table,
- 31:45like I said, fitness was already done.
- 31:47He knows what he's doing.
- 31:48It was more about trying to
- 31:50take things off of his
- 31:51plate so he could focus on
- 31:53just performing and executing his best.
- 31:56You know, I did all his timing for, okay,
- 32:00this is when you need to eat.
- 32:01This is when you need to start warming up.
- 32:02This is when you need to go
- 32:04to the bathroom before they call you.
- 32:07Basically,
- 32:07forcing him to eat more than he
- 32:09wanted to.
- 32:10And scheduling his, like...
- 32:13recovery appointments and
- 32:15just more like the
- 32:15logistics of it and also
- 32:18that kind of support in the
- 32:19warm-up area of like hey
- 32:22you're looking down when
- 32:23you're about to snatch or
- 32:25some things that you know
- 32:26from a coaching perspective
- 32:28are details that the
- 32:29athlete has so many things
- 32:30going on that it just helps
- 32:31to have that person there
- 32:33to you know be there to support you yeah
- 32:37I can't help but notice that
- 32:38Rudy is nodding his head as
- 32:40you're going through the
- 32:41list of things you do.
- 32:42Because I'm assuming he's
- 32:44been through this a number of times.
- 32:47Rudy,
- 32:48it's just been you and Lynette for a
- 32:49long time.
- 32:50And now she has other athletes.
- 32:55How does that make you feel?
- 32:57I love it because it's
- 32:59giving her the opportunity to grow.
- 33:01She started as an understudy
- 33:03under Scott Panczyk,
- 33:05one of the greatest coach
- 33:06programmers of all time.
- 33:08And so now it's like, all right,
- 33:10you've been taught all these things.
- 33:12Spread your wings and help others.
- 33:14And like she said,
- 33:15she's only going to do this
- 33:16for people that are
- 33:18fantastic and that she knows well,
- 33:20at least right now.
- 33:21Anyways,
- 33:21we'll see how wide those wings can
- 33:24spread.
- 33:24But I love it.
- 33:25She actually had me test a
- 33:26couple paces for the semifinals for Max.
- 33:29So that was kind of fun.
- 33:31But yeah, I love it.
- 33:32I want to see her grow.
- 33:34So athletes make the worst spectators.
- 33:36I agree.
- 33:37So she's not on the floor,
- 33:39but like her success depends on Max.
- 33:43When you're watching that,
- 33:45how nervous did you get?
- 33:47Very nervous.
- 33:50I felt like I was on Max's team,
- 33:55and I actually was texting
- 33:57Lynette all the times from
- 33:59the previous heats and
- 34:01trying to make myself useful.
- 34:02I was like, hey,
- 34:03I need to try to help
- 34:04something from just a
- 34:06support perspective.
- 34:08It was, yeah, I was very involved,
- 34:10absolutely.
- 34:12And you've been blessed to
- 34:14have an athlete that has
- 34:16won the games every time he's tried,
- 34:19right?
- 34:19Yes.
- 34:20Now you have an athlete
- 34:21that's trying to get over
- 34:28to be crazy when you're
- 34:30there mm-hmm I would say
- 34:32yes and I and maybe is
- 34:33because we our relationship
- 34:35is so recent you know that
- 34:38when we broke down the
- 34:39workouts he outperformed
- 34:41the things that he was
- 34:42going to crush and then he
- 34:44executed about the the
- 34:46performance that we
- 34:47expected on the events that
- 34:48were not his strengths so
- 34:51regardless of the outcome
- 34:52like the execution
- 34:54was really well done and so
- 34:57you know while the ultimate
- 34:59goal is to make it to the
- 35:00crossfit games I think
- 35:02right now the goal was to
- 35:05say okay let's kind of
- 35:07identify what are those
- 35:08areas that we need to focus
- 35:10on and then just hammer
- 35:11them and not from the
- 35:13traditional approach of
- 35:14doing necessarily more it's
- 35:17like let's solve it to root
- 35:18cause so he's actually visiting um
- 35:22early july so in a couple
- 35:24weeks he's gonna stay with
- 35:26us our our kids love him
- 35:27because he is a taylor
- 35:29swift fan so just by that
- 35:31and at southland they yeah
- 35:33they spend so much time
- 35:35doing the ramp the
- 35:36handstand walk ramp yeah
- 35:37every every time we looked
- 35:38in this corner there's max
- 35:40and mason and there's max
- 35:41and mason like battling so
- 35:43they're looking forward to
- 35:44hanging out with man they
- 35:45already know him well it's
- 35:47wild so we are going to you
- 35:49know like as you know i
- 35:52like I am very resourceful
- 35:54and so when I don't know
- 35:55something I am not really
- 35:57um embarrassed or ashamed
- 35:59to say I don't know the
- 36:00answer to that so my goal
- 36:02for his visit here is to
- 36:04link him up with people
- 36:05that we trust that help us
- 36:07identify all right this is
- 36:09what he needs to focus on
- 36:10and then we're going to
- 36:11execute on those things so
- 36:14it's going to be a fun visit
- 36:16So this is going to be an
- 36:17interesting question
- 36:18because I've been around
- 36:19you for a couple years
- 36:20documenting the journey.
- 36:22For Rudy, you only need a look, right?
- 36:27Now you have new clients
- 36:29that I'm not sure that's
- 36:31the technique that's going to work.
- 36:33So how much better of a
- 36:34coach are you becoming because it's
- 36:40other ways of communication.
- 36:41Yes, that is a very great point.
- 36:44And maybe I just got lucky,
- 36:46but Max's and Rudy's
- 36:49personality are very
- 36:51similar in a way on the
- 36:54competition floor in how
- 36:55they approach things.
- 36:56They're both very calm.
- 36:58They don't really get flustered.
- 37:01They manage stress really well.
- 37:04So from that perspective,
- 37:05our communication was
- 37:06fairly kind of smooth from the get-go.
- 37:09I did get a little excited
- 37:11the first day because I'm
- 37:13used to the master's
- 37:14timeline for warming up.
- 37:17And you know,
- 37:17Rudy needs a solid hour
- 37:19before he's even like touching anything.
- 37:22And Max is like rolling in
- 37:24with like 40 minutes to go and I'm like,
- 37:26you're making me really nervous.
- 37:27And then I'm like, okay,
- 37:28he's half Rudy's age.
- 37:30Younger muscles, younger muscles.
- 37:34But yeah.
- 37:35Yeah.
- 37:36So anyways,
- 37:36there was a little bit of a
- 37:38learning curve, um, for that.
- 37:40And then the,
- 37:42what I loved about being
- 37:43there is that I got to see him
- 37:46You know through the highs
- 37:47and the lows and got to
- 37:49learn about how he handles
- 37:51all of that Which is not easy,
- 37:53especially by yourself Like
- 37:55I don't know how anybody
- 37:56does this without a coach
- 37:58by them whether that coach
- 38:00is your spouse or some
- 38:01close friend that you trust
- 38:03but there has to be
- 38:04something kind of Somebody
- 38:05there for you to kind of
- 38:07celebrate with you and also
- 38:08kind of pick you up when
- 38:10when things don't go your
- 38:11way so the fact that he's
- 38:12done this by himself is
- 38:14it's kind of you know
- 38:15impressive on its own but
- 38:18it was great after every
- 38:19event we took a walk kind
- 38:20of like a cool down walk
- 38:21and we debriefed and
- 38:23celebrated things that went
- 38:24well and kind of took notes
- 38:27of things that we need to
- 38:28work on and then we moved
- 38:30on so it was kind of like I
- 38:32said I got lucky because
- 38:33he's not a really emotional
- 38:35person kind of gives you the same look
- 38:39whether things are good or not so good.
- 38:42So, yeah, it's like him.
- 38:43Except, you know,
- 38:44I can kind of boss him
- 38:46around a little more.
- 38:47Max, I have to, you know,
- 38:49be a little more professional.
- 38:52So,
- 38:53the only time I saw Max get emotional
- 38:55when I talked to him was
- 38:57when we talked about Taylor Swift.
- 38:59Yes, he, like, right now, I saw that.
- 39:02Yeah, so...
- 39:04Leah, actually,
- 39:05I had these like little
- 39:06ideas to kind of occupy our
- 39:09time when we were in
- 39:10between events or killing time.
- 39:12So Leah made Taylor Swift
- 39:13trivia for him and his wife.
- 39:15And they have some work to do.
- 39:19I told Leah, I'm like,
- 39:20make it hard because
- 39:21they're like top five fans.
- 39:24Not only did she do Taylor Swift trivia,
- 39:25she did CrossFit trivia for
- 39:27like the whole group that you were with.
- 39:29Yeah.
- 39:29You know, the...
- 39:30let's call it the southland
- 39:31crew like brandon and his
- 39:32wife are all there so she
- 39:34had a pretty good crossfit
- 39:36trivia that she sent there
- 39:37yeah it's cool it's always
- 39:39a family so speaking of
- 39:41family the southland group
- 39:42has become a family of
- 39:44yours oh yeah yeah um I had
- 39:46brandon on last night and
- 39:48he talked about how you've
- 39:49become an integral part and
- 39:51are part of the planning
- 39:53and uh he relies on you so much
- 39:57So here you are at this
- 39:59iconic place in California
- 40:02where the games used to be held.
- 40:04And you have Scott Tetlow, Brandon Luckett,
- 40:07Max Krieg, Bill Leahy,
- 40:12all there hanging out.
- 40:15When you're there competing,
- 40:18is it still a family?
- 40:20Or do they kind of go to
- 40:21their separate corners?
- 40:23for the weekend?
- 40:24No, it truly felt like a family.
- 40:27I got so many hugs.
- 40:29I loved hanging out with Scott.
- 40:31He's such a great guy.
- 40:32I missed the briefing
- 40:35because I was flying in
- 40:36late and they changed the
- 40:38run for the event one,
- 40:40kind of last minute,
- 40:41and Scott is the one who
- 40:43took me to the new course to see it.
- 40:46Yes, they're competitors on the field,
- 40:48but everybody wants to do their best.
- 40:52And like Brandon said yesterday,
- 40:55they just push each other.
- 40:57They set the standard,
- 40:58and they have their
- 40:59strengths and their weaknesses,
- 41:01and they just use that to
- 41:02really make each other better.
- 41:04a better athlete yeah so
- 41:06yeah it was it was really
- 41:07great to be with the crew
- 41:09um roy uh was uh brandon's
- 41:11coach so roy and I oh my
- 41:13gosh we were like like this
- 41:15is stressful because it's a
- 41:17big deal like the countdown
- 41:20of what before they
- 41:20announced who made it like
- 41:22I think roy and I were like
- 41:24like this we're like
- 41:25sweating we're like you
- 41:27know he was texting us all
- 41:29I have to say is so I was
- 41:30keeping score from
- 41:33remotely in ohio and I had a
- 41:34spreadsheet with all the
- 41:36scores so I technically
- 41:38knew before they announced
- 41:40I was like all right
- 41:41brandon's good but it's not
- 41:43until you hear it that's
- 41:45what you're like anyways
- 41:46yeah so no it was really
- 41:48great it was a great
- 41:49experience that's cool well
- 41:50the part about that weight
- 41:51and every athlete I've
- 41:52talked to that weight is
- 41:53just miserable but there
- 41:56are there could be a
- 41:57penalty there could be an
- 41:59appeal there could be
- 42:01And so what you think
- 42:02happened on the floor may
- 42:03not have happened and you're waiting
- 42:07And I swear your brain just like,
- 42:09like you look at the
- 42:10leaderboard and then you,
- 42:12you have so many thoughts
- 42:13going through your mind that you like,
- 42:15I don't want to rely on my
- 42:16math and I will not be the
- 42:18one to tell Brandon he made it.
- 42:20And then something is not
- 42:22right or the opposite, you know?
- 42:24So it's just like, everybody kind of knows,
- 42:26but nobody is certain until
- 42:29that is announced.
- 42:30So, yeah.
- 42:31Yeah.
- 42:32It's.
- 42:33And I think like the masters
- 42:35don't get that feel because
- 42:37You do it at home and you
- 42:38wait for the leaderboard to be released,
- 42:40right?
- 42:41And then you wait two more
- 42:42weeks through video review,
- 42:43which who knows what's
- 42:44going to happen there.
- 42:45I have told my listeners repeatedly,
- 42:49the best time to go watch
- 42:50CrossFit Live is at the semifinals.
- 42:53Way more tension, way more stress,
- 42:56and everybody's accessible.
- 42:58Everybody's hanging out.
- 43:00At the games,
- 43:00they have everybody on lockdown.
- 43:02Yeah, they do.
- 43:03You know, where they're like,
- 43:04everybody's just hanging out,
- 43:05having a good time until Sunday.
- 43:08And then it becomes really
- 43:09tense and you're watching it all,
- 43:13especially this year with that last event,
- 43:15fall apart on that last event.
- 43:18Especially this year too,
- 43:19with being kind of like day
- 43:22three had just as many
- 43:23points up for grabs than
- 43:25the previous two days.
- 43:26So, you know, it was like,
- 43:30like there was nothing set
- 43:31in stone until maybe for
- 43:34some people at the top,
- 43:35but like there's a lot of
- 43:36movement that could happen on day three.
- 43:39So yeah, it was, it was fun.
- 43:41So my last question is about
- 43:43this is do you have other
- 43:44athletes or do I have to go
- 43:45interview a bunch of people
- 43:46until I find out?
- 43:48Nope.
- 43:48That is the only elite athlete.
- 43:50I have other athletes that
- 43:52are not as competitive, um,
- 43:55but are more like local competitive, um,
- 43:58working athletes, so yeah.
- 44:00Okay,
- 44:01so do you have plans for Max in the
- 44:03off season to do maybe some
- 44:05of the bigger events?
- 44:07Yeah,
- 44:07so we actually just met on Monday to
- 44:09talk about some of those dates.
- 44:12He is kind of looking at the
- 44:13calendar and prioritizing
- 44:14some events he may want to do.
- 44:17One that we're looking at is
- 44:18the Desert City Classic.
- 44:20I'm biased towards that
- 44:21because I know that what's
- 44:22got behind the programming
- 44:24is going to be amazing.
- 44:26Like it's going to be a
- 44:27really good test of fitness.
- 44:29And if there was like an
- 44:30open or a master's division,
- 44:32Rudy would be doing it too.
- 44:34But yeah,
- 44:36I am encouraging Max to do that one.
- 44:38And it's at the same
- 44:39location as Legends was last year.
- 44:42Oh, okay.
- 44:43I didn't realize that.
- 44:44I knew it was in the same city,
- 44:46but I didn't know the venue was the same.
- 44:48Yeah,
- 44:48actually Desert City tested it first.
- 44:51Okay.
- 44:52Then Legends went their second.
- 44:55And I think they both signed
- 44:56a two-year contract.
- 44:58I do remember that.
- 44:59And I think it would be
- 45:00really cool to see if he
- 45:02wants to do Rogue.
- 45:05So yeah, some maybe big things.
- 45:07A little Scotland trip.
- 45:09Hey, I tell him, like,
- 45:10I got to go to that.
- 45:12You need your coach there.
- 45:14Of course he does.
- 45:16Rogue pays for the athlete
- 45:17to go if you make it.
- 45:19It would be really cool.
- 45:23So now we're back to Rudy.
- 45:27You've won it two times in a row,
- 45:29but you're getting old in this division.
- 45:32I know.
- 45:33I know.
- 45:33And there's a lot of guys,
- 45:35young guys coming up from the 35 to 39,
- 45:37which is a really competitive age group.
- 45:41Does that give you pause, stress?
- 45:44It gives me more fire, honestly.
- 45:46I can't settle for where I
- 45:48was at last year or the year before.
- 45:50I know.
- 45:51I have to keep pushing my
- 45:53fitness and keep progressing, which, yeah,
- 45:56when the years start to tick on,
- 45:58it gets more challenging,
- 45:59but I'm not concerned.
- 46:01We just add 15 minutes to the warm-up.
- 46:04We just warm up a lot longer.
- 46:05No joke.
- 46:07A lot more warm up.
- 46:08And it just, it makes it to where,
- 46:11you know, we're very detail oriented,
- 46:13but we focus on more and more details.
- 46:15And there's just more things
- 46:16that you can uncover, you know,
- 46:18from recovery and nutrition
- 46:19and just balancing the
- 46:21stress load of work and
- 46:23family and exercise.
- 46:25So I know how data driven you guys are.
- 46:29It's hard when you keep
- 46:31winning to figure out where
- 46:33you need to be.
- 46:35And the target is moving now, right?
- 46:37It is.
- 46:37You're getting older.
- 46:38Younger kids are coming up
- 46:39into your division.
- 46:41Do you dip down into 35 to
- 46:4339 to see kind of what's
- 46:44happening so that you have a target?
- 46:48Or do you just worry about
- 46:50yourself and getting better?
- 46:52I think personally, I, you know,
- 46:55what we do is, you know,
- 46:56after a competition,
- 46:57whether in live or online,
- 47:01we debrief and we pick
- 47:03those things that weren't as successful.
- 47:06And, you know, maybe two years ago,
- 47:08I was fine with, you know,
- 47:10how many double-unders I could string.
- 47:12But like this year, I said, hey,
- 47:14I felt more fatigued on
- 47:15those than I feel I should have.
- 47:17I wasn't the most competitive.
- 47:19We need to dig into those.
- 47:20And so it's really,
- 47:21it's almost like what
- 47:23Glassman and Castro say, where it's like,
- 47:25all right, if you get good at something,
- 47:27start back over on the fundamentals.
- 47:30And if you want to get better,
- 47:31it's like you have to start,
- 47:32deconstruct it,
- 47:34and start from the
- 47:35beginning again to then progress.
- 47:37So that's really what we're doing.
- 47:38And that also keeps it more
- 47:41fun and interesting, too.
- 47:42And I will say, on the data point,
- 47:46I think like something that
- 47:48I've done and it's because
- 47:50until the leaderboard is final,
- 47:51I can't relax because it's just, you know,
- 47:55it's a waiting process.
- 47:57I do like compare his scores
- 47:59to the 35 to 39.
- 48:00So kind of get an idea of
- 48:02would he have moved on if
- 48:04he was in that age group?
- 48:05So I can't say that I do
- 48:07that a lot or do it consistently,
- 48:09but every once in a while
- 48:11there might be an event that I'm like,
- 48:12Hi,
- 48:13I wonder how he would have ranked in
- 48:14this younger age group.
- 48:16So, but yeah,
- 48:17it's not something that we do
- 48:18all the time.
- 48:20So my last question about
- 48:21data is for the last couple of years,
- 48:24it's either my boss or Dave
- 48:25that have done the
- 48:26programming for your CrossFit Games.
- 48:29This year it is Bob and Joe.
- 48:32Correct.
- 48:35Do you go back and look at
- 48:36the legends workouts?
- 48:39I know our stats and info person, Holly,
- 48:42which you guys have become-
- 48:44Holly is amazing.
- 48:45Yeah.
- 48:46So she actually posted like
- 48:48all the legends modalities,
- 48:51all the legends timeframes, all that.
- 48:54Do you look at that data
- 48:55more than what you've seen at the games?
- 48:58So to be honest,
- 48:59I haven't dug into that yet,
- 49:02but I probably will a
- 49:04little bit more as we get closer.
- 49:08Yeah,
- 49:10we probably need a long time to talk
- 49:12about this,
- 49:13because I have a lot of
- 49:14opinions on this topic.
- 49:17But what I'm trusting is
- 49:19that there's collaboration
- 49:21to make the tests really balanced.
- 49:34right now like I said hasn't
- 49:36been a huge focus but
- 49:38definitely as the season
- 49:40gets a little bit more
- 49:42critical towards games
- 49:43preparation we'll look at
- 49:45past events and just maybe
- 49:47pick up some trends or you
- 49:49know potential movements
- 49:51that we haven't tested but
- 49:53at the end of the day we
- 49:54want to be balanced you
- 49:55know the tests are going to
- 49:57be what they're going to be and
- 50:00We can't predict that.
- 50:01So trying to stay as
- 50:04balanced as possible is
- 50:05going to be the goal.
- 50:07So my last question on
- 50:08programming is the games
- 50:11seem to be going back to
- 50:12cross-finish type workouts.
- 50:14Yeah.
- 50:14Back to like 2014, 2015 era style.
- 50:20Is that better for you guys
- 50:22or do you like the newer
- 50:24let's throw in some new
- 50:25stuff here and there?
- 50:28I mean.
- 50:28What do you think?
- 50:31I don't think I care that much.
- 50:35I roll with it.
- 50:37Let's go classic.
- 50:38Let's go new.
- 50:41The only thing I will say is
- 50:42I'm not a huge fan of
- 50:44overly creative things just
- 50:46to make it weird.
- 50:49I think just keep it to what
- 50:52really needs to be tested.
- 50:53Make it challenging,
- 50:54but nothing so weird that it's just...
- 50:58Almost unsafe.
- 50:59You know, that's where I draw the line.
- 51:01Like, let's test the fitness,
- 51:03keep it safe.
- 51:04Yeah.
- 51:05It has to come down to a test of fitness,
- 51:07not who can figure this out, which,
- 51:10you know, we've experienced that.
- 51:12So there is some form of
- 51:13athleticism about figuring it out.
- 51:16Sure.
- 51:16Do you think you're strong in athleticism?
- 51:19Um, yeah.
- 51:22I think under pressure,
- 51:25I will say three years ago,
- 51:28probably not as much.
- 51:30Three years ago,
- 51:31let's say he had in his
- 51:33head that he was going to
- 51:34do a set of 10 of something.
- 51:37And he got up there and did
- 51:38two and came down.
- 51:40That was more like, oh,
- 51:41that didn't go to plan.
- 51:43Less ability to pivot and kind of adapt.
- 51:47Obviously, as we got serious...
- 51:49Adapting is a critical part of the game.
- 51:52So,
- 51:53I would say he's been getting a lot of
- 51:54practice doing that over the years.
- 51:56So,
- 51:57people I would say are strong in
- 51:58athleticism are like Scott Pancheck,
- 52:00like Dan Bailey, like Paige Semenza,
- 52:05Carolyn Prevost.
- 52:06These are people that played
- 52:07other sports their whole lives.
- 52:09They're going to slide under a pole.
- 52:11They're going to... Yeah.
- 52:12Right.
- 52:13Do you have that in you?
- 52:16I think I do.
- 52:17Yeah.
- 52:18Cutting?
- 52:20I mean,
- 52:21my hips may get a little sore at
- 52:24this age.
- 52:25As long as you have an hour to warm up.
- 52:27As long as I warm up for an hour.
- 52:28I would say if volleyball
- 52:30shows up at the games,
- 52:31we might be in trouble.
- 52:33We may have to add some
- 52:34volleyball drills just in case.
- 52:37What else?
- 52:38Softball maybe?
- 52:39Softball, yeah.
- 52:41Oh, football throws.
- 52:42Please don't put those in the games.
- 52:44That would not.
- 52:45We may have to like FaceTime
- 52:46Scott for like a urgent tutorial.
- 52:51Yeah,
- 52:51I don't think any throws are coming
- 52:52back ever again after the softball throw.
- 52:55You were a wrestler growing up, right?
- 52:58I was.
- 53:00Brandon and I talked about
- 53:01that a lot last night.
- 53:01The correlation of pain
- 53:03threshold and being a
- 53:05wrestler and there are a lot of
- 53:08really good athletes out
- 53:10there in the CrossFit space
- 53:11who came with that wrestling background.
- 53:13Absolutely.
- 53:13How much do you attribute to that?
- 53:15A lot.
- 53:17I mean, so when I was growing up,
- 53:19I had three older sisters,
- 53:20so I didn't like have a rough household.
- 53:23But when I joined wrestling,
- 53:25I learned I had this other
- 53:26gear or this just
- 53:28grittiness of being able to continue
- 53:31with a lot of discomfort, right?
- 53:33If you're put in a position
- 53:34and you're very uncomfortable,
- 53:36you gotta fight through it
- 53:37and just live with it.
- 53:39And what I learned from that
- 53:40in wrestling definitely
- 53:42plays out in the CrossFit world.
- 53:44Yeah, it does.
- 53:45Yeah, I say it all the time.
- 53:46One of my first ever
- 53:46interviews was Chris Feeler,
- 53:48who was a college wrestler.
- 53:50And he said,
- 53:51wrestling is all about being
- 53:52in positions that are not comfortable.
- 53:54Right.
- 53:55And that's what CrossFit is.
- 53:57It is.
- 53:58It is.
- 53:59Yeah.
- 53:59Yeah.
- 54:00One of the...
- 54:01you know, quotes that we bring up often is,
- 54:05I think it was Josh Bridges
- 54:06basically said, you know,
- 54:08things are going to get difficult,
- 54:09things are going to get hot,
- 54:11things are going to get hard.
- 54:12It's basically like when
- 54:13things catch on fire,
- 54:15you have to be willing to
- 54:16run into that fire, not avoid it.
- 54:20So that's kind of what I
- 54:21think internally when
- 54:22things get really hard.
- 54:23It's like, all right,
- 54:24I either lean in or this
- 54:26isn't going to pan out.
- 54:28And that's... Well,
- 54:29I've witnessed your career
- 54:30over the last two years.
- 54:31You lean in, and it is fun to watch.
- 54:34Thank you.
- 54:35I love when you finish a workout,
- 54:36and you look, and you're like,
- 54:37I don't even remember the
- 54:40last 30 seconds.
- 54:41That's true.
- 54:43I wish I would have gotten
- 54:45to watch him wrestle.
- 54:46That was way before my time.
- 54:48So I have seen pictures,
- 54:50but no live wrestling videos or anything.
- 54:54Maybe we can get Spieler out of retirement,
- 54:55and him and Spieler can go out.
- 54:57You know, it's funny.
- 54:59At Southland, Brandon would, like,
- 55:01kind of wrestle Rudy, and I'm like,
- 55:02please don't hurt him.
- 55:03Like, he needs to warm up first.
- 55:06And then you came up and
- 55:09kind of tried to grab him.
- 55:10Yeah.
- 55:10And he, like, it was a little scary.
- 55:13Yeah.
- 55:14So the last thing on wrestling,
- 55:15I don't know if you saw it.
- 55:16They did that live
- 55:18quarterfinals with Colton, Jason.
- 55:22And all those guys.
- 55:23And Colton,
- 55:24and Jason tried to wrestle Colton.
- 55:26Yes.
- 55:27Yes.
- 55:28And Colton dropped him quick.
- 55:31And seeing that little guy
- 55:32take down that big,
- 55:33tall football player was
- 55:35really impressive.
- 55:36That's awesome.
- 55:37Those wrestlers are gritty.
- 55:39We don't mess around.
- 55:40Yeah.
- 55:41That dude shows as much grit
- 55:42as anybody out there.
- 55:44It's all about that wrestling background.
- 55:45Yeah.
- 55:47Well, guys, as always,
- 55:48it's always a treat hanging out with you.
- 55:51I'm so glad you live so
- 55:52close and that we can do
- 55:53this all the time.
- 55:54But I can't wait to see you at the games.
- 55:56Yeah.
- 55:58And hopefully we'll have
- 55:58some backstage access to
- 56:00get some of your thoughts
- 56:02post-workout and in the
- 56:03warm-up area and stuff.
- 56:04That would be great.
- 56:05Awesome.
- 56:07Well, thanks, guys.
